A WORD FROM OUR LEADER – Bridget Keevil Dear all If I had to describe the last twelve months, it has undoubtedly been the ‘Year of my Life’. Whilst not all moments, in fact not many at all (!) have actually been pleasurable, and at times most have been almost unbearable, they have also been the most fantastic I have ever experienced. When I decided to take part in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race, the decision was also to take a year out from Travel Stop – where my heart belongs. And it was most wonderful (and a relief!) to return to see that my business not only still existed, but that it was actually thriving, with things having gone from strength to strength! I am therefore thrilled to be ‘back at the helm’ to steer the business in the continuing direction of onwards and upwards.

In this brief update, I am delighted to introduce you to our newest staff members, who joined Travel Stop during my time away. Hannah Moss has joined our Claydon team and Christine Vaughan works in the Hadleigh Office. Hannah, although new to the industry, is extremely well travelled, having included Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and Far East in her travels. Christine, having been in the travel industry for almost 40 years, reveals that there are few places she has not visited! Both are great additions to our already knowledgeable teams and we are pleased to have them with us.
• Presentations throughout the day
I hope that those of you I have not yet had the pleasure to see since my return to dry land in August will drop in and see me sometime in the near future. Even if you do not have any immediate holiday plans, I would still welcome the opportunity to see you and to catch up. I have always tried to ensure that all three Travel Stop offices are welcoming and pleasant places to visit and as many of you will know, there will always be a fresh coffee pot on.
• Small versus large ships
I would personally like to thank all of you who followed my journey and for the kind messages of support and words of encouragement – they helped me no end during the times I struggled and I want you to know that they were appreciated beyond measure. Finally, thank you for your continued support of Travel Stop.
Bridget

ASIA There is Asia, and then there is an Indus Experience of Asia. Whether you are venturing east for the very first time, or think you have already explored the continent from end to end, we pride ourselves in helping you discover the unique and the unforgettable.
In B H U T A N - Land of the Thunder Dragon - let us whisk you away to this magical Himalayan Kingdom with its glacial valleys, alpine meadows, and Buddhist monasteries clinging to sheer rock faces. This is your chance to learn about Gross National appiness, its significance in Bhutanese culture, and how the concept is spreading around the world. In addition to big name sites, Indus Experiences will introduce you to the fabulous collection of Buddhist literature preserved in the National Library; the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of Gangtey market; and sit with you in the stillness of the pristine Phobjikha Valley, the winter home of black necked cranes.
After decades of sanctions,
B U R M A is finally reopening for
tourism, unveiling its cultural treasures once again. Sail with us up the Irrawaddy River, the lifeblood of the country, and watch the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins jump and play around the boat. Take to the skies in an early morning hot air balloon ride across the Bagan plain, then descend gracefully for breakfast and a closer look at the famed Bagan temples and pagodas. Your expert guide can lead you amongst the monuments on foot, but if you wish to cover larger portions of the site, there’s also the opportunity to ride in a traditional bullock cart, becoming part of the idyllic rural scene.
N E P A L is famed for its mountaineering and trekking, but our desire is to introduce visitors to the country’s rich flora and fauna, too. Amidst peaks of spellbinding beauty are secluded valleys, extensive national parks and reserves, and even jungles where Bengal tigers roam. The themes of our special interest tours in Nepal vary from earth sciences to bird watching, and photography and to ild flo ers, encouraging you to obser e the magnificence of the natural world closely, and to learn about it from authoritative guides as you travel. Our small group tours are typically capped at no more than a dozen people, making for an intimate experience, but if you do prefer to travel independently, we can create a distinct itinerary for you.
Experience Asia like never before with a tailor-made itinerary or specialist small group tour from the award-winning Indus Experiences.
S R I L A N K A is quite rightly known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, a tear drop of an island off the southern coast of India. Colonial Ceylon, Sri Lanka is famed for its tea, and we pride ourselves on our tea experience. At the Dickoya Tea Estate in hills of Nuwaraliya, we will arrange for you to take a tour with the resident planter. With his workers, he will show you how to pluck tea - nipping two leaves and a bud from each stalk - and then how to dry and process the tea into the perfect breakfast or afternoon brew. We insist you taste the tea you’ve helped to make, and it makes an ideal, lightweight keepsake from your trip.

Word of the opulence of
I N D O C H I N A reached
Europe long before travel was within the reach of ordinary people, and when you visit Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam with Indus Experience, we aim to recreate that sense of wonder and excitement. You will never forget sailing in a small boat amongst the thousands of small islands in Halong Bay, driving the coastal road from Hue to Hoi An, or shopping in Cai Be’s colourful floating market. No one should miss the spectacle which is Cambodia’s UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat from the air, especially first thing on a misty morning, or when a snake of monks in orange robes is making its way from a temple to collect alms from pious devotees.
And then, of course, there is I N D I A , the Queen of Asia, a country to vast and so diverse that it defies explanation and must be experienced firsthand. Ride the rails with us through Rajasthan to the palaces and fortresses of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer, or ascend into the Himalayas onboard the affectionately named Toy Train. Soak up the romance of the desert, ride an elephant along the banks of the holy Ganges, or track tigers on foot through the jungles of central India. It’s also possible to travel north into the Kashmir Valley - the heart of the 1960s hippy trail - and to wile away your days on the verandah of a carved cedar wood houseboat, or wandering the Persian gardens built by emperors long since departed from this world.

efforts to throw fishing nets and a ride (and dancing) in the ‘basket boats’ which required a good sense of balance!
Upon arrival in Hanoi, they were transferred to their hotel which was centrally located in the Old Quarter, ideal for the shops, markets and restaurants and just a few minutes walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. A delicious baguette was enjoyed for lunch in a street cafe sitting on tiny stools on the pavement!
Another excursion which was enjoyed whilst in Hoi An was the Red Bridge Cooking Class. This included a tour of the local food market before travelling to the restaurant, usually by boat depending on the tide, for the actual cooking experience, and a fun way to spend a morning.
The first evening meal was their first of many great dining experiences whilst in Vietnam, taken in a lovely restaurant with amazing views over Hanoi, the Lake and the Red Bridge which was beautifully lit up. The food was excellent although the menu selection was made much easier with the help of their guide.
A beautiful scenic drive over the Hoi An Pass to Hue where the views over the pass were spectacular. The stay here was in a beautiful Old Colonial building opposite the Perfume River, followed by an evening travelling by ‘Cyclos’ through Hue to a the local restaurants.
The 3.5 hour journey to Halong Bay passed quickly, watching the people, traffic, numerous mopeds and the beautiful scenery enroute – from paddy fields to mountain backdrops. Once there, they joined the ‘Indochina Sails’ which was to take them around stunning Halong Bay. A lovely boat with each deluxe cabin having floor to ceiling windows with a French Balcony. The cruise experience was enhanced with some included excursions; one to a private island with the opportunity to climb quite high up to get the best panoramic views of Halong Bay or, if not up for the climb, one could enjoy a swim or just a relax on the small beach. Other excursion options were also available, for example a trip on a Sanpan (small boat) to a floating fishing village. Even kayaking was an option! Onwards to Hoi An, where the town itself is a great place to walk round and shop. Very vibrant especially at night, with some great restaurants and all beautifully lit up with multi coloured lanterns. It is recommended to use a tailor if you want to get an outfit made – it can be done in a day/overnight but you must make time to have a second fitting. In Hoi An, a ‘Fisherman Tour’ was a highlight of the trip. It was such fun, especially with the attempted
The next day, another short flight from Hue to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) where they had an overnight stay before transferring to the Mekong Delta to join an overnight river cruise on the ‘Mekong Eyes’ Junk Boat at Can Tho. Transferring to sampan boats, they then made trips to local villages along the banks of the river, weaving in and out of the Cai Be floating market. Before the flight home from Saigon a visit was made to Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of tunnels built during the Vietnam War, stretching over 155 miles. This excursion is a ‘must-see’ for anyone travelling to Vietnam and staying in Saigon. It gives a fascinating insight to the war and the determination and ingenuity of the Vietcong.
Muelle After an early start the following morning, they San Carlos Pital made their way through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, passing through small towns and villages with banana and pineapple plantations before arriving at Cana Blanco pier. They then joined a boat for the transfer through the Tortuguero canals, spotting crocodiles, birds, Biological monkeys and a variety of wildlife en-route. An early morning waterfall hike presented another Dr. Archie Carr ‘Wow’ moment – Anita had many of these during Wildlife Refuge her time in Costa Rica – before heading to Arenal to enjoy a Hanging Bridges Canopy Tour. Being amongst the trees and wildlife, with the most Puerto Viejo Chilamate Tortuguero knowledgeable guides answering all questions de Sarapiquí National Park about theTigre fauna and flora, this tour really did not disappoint! A long transfer over to the Pacific coastal resort of Manuel Antonio followed. Here, Anita had the pleasure of a resident sloth in a tree just outside her room. After being rudely awoken by the Howler Monkeys at 4am, she sat on her balcony where she was joined by a troop of Capuchin Monkeys as their pathway to where they were heading was via the tree in front of her room! What an experience!

A short plane journey from a local ‘airport’ which, again, was reached by boat took them to their next stop – Bajos del Toro. VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS for discerning travellers
TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR by Karin Henry In June, Karin Henry from our Hadleigh office was invited by Visions of Africa to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar.
A journey on the elegant Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train should be on every discerning traveller’s wish list – there is simply no better way to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary in style. From the moment you board the train, you take a step back in time to a bygone era when discerning travellers sought to travel in elegant style. Today guests can still rely on the highest levels of personal service, with delicious cuisine served in a stylish dining car, combined with a private sleeper cabin and civilised bar carriage where you can meet other like-minded travellers. The handsome livery of the Belmond British Pullman train and the immaculate WagonsLits of the Continental train combine to provide you with a unique and unforgettable experience.
After the international flight to Dar Es Salaam, the group then made a short flight to the dusty Mtemere airstrip, for their stay in the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous Riverside Camp was to be their base for the next couple of nights. Accommodation here is in luxury tents with thatched roofs and a sundeck with plunge pool overlooking the river – very in keeping with its surrounding and giving the experience to feel very ‘at one with nature’, especially at night when the noises of the wildlife could be clearly heard. The food is excellent with a lovely ambiance, in a super setting. The first day finished with a peaceful sunset river safari, watching the sunset from a small boat surrounded by hippopotamus – what could be better!
place had the ‘Wow’ factor! In an amazing location with great views of the river, this beautiful lodge was a fabulous place to stay. Showering under the stars in the outside shower on the balcony and hippos wallowing outside your window, just enhanced the entire experience. After a further night here, it was time to head to the beaches of Zanzibar. A small aircraft from Stiegler’s Gorge Airstrip, connecting with another small aircraft in Dar Es Salaam, they finally arrived in Zanzibar. Exploring Stone Town on foot is a ‘must’, before heading to your beach hotel. A guided tour taking in the colourful market place, historic buildings, the slave market and slave chambers, is to name just a few of the many places of interest in this town. This provides an interesting insight into the island’s history and its people.
Throughout the journey you will be attended by your cabin steward, and you will enjoy outstanding food prepared by expert chefs - all meals on board are included at no extra cost.

There are many very lovely properties in Zanzibar and one of the larger ones which I liked the most was the Baraza. This hotel is of a lovely standard and one which will suit all, including families, due to the very spacious villa accommodation. The Zawadi is a beautiful small hotel, with outstanding views, a relaxed ambiance and a perfect place for couples, honeymooners and weddings also.
