Dear All
And hello to 2018!
Yet another year has passed since I last updated you with the all the news from Travel Stop. It seems that, no matter what is going on in the outside world, we are simply getting busier and busier! Oh, please don’t think for one moment that’s a complaint — I’m thrilled of course!
A WORD FROM OUR LEADER – Bridget Keevil
As usual, last year presented us with some unexpected challenges, although perhaps nothing quite as disruptive for such a lengthy amount of time as the volcanic ash cloud of 2010. But during 2017 we saw the sad demise of Monarch Airlines and Holidays, the unprecedented cancellation of hundreds of Ryanair flights at short notice, and the absolute chaos caused during May half term with British Airways’ computer failure. However nothing compares to that of the o describe the last destruction twelve months, has undoubtedly been thethe ‘ hurricanes of Irma and Jose. catastrophic and heartbreaking caused it throughout the Caribbean during homes ŽŵĞŶƚƐ͕ ĨĂĐƚ ŶŽƚ been ŵĂŶLJdeeply Ăƚ Ăůůaffected, ;͊Ϳ ŚĂǀĞand ĂĐƚƵĂůůLJ ďĞ travel needing So many and ŝŶ lives having long planned arrangements to be cancelled Hopefully our customers who were affected by one or another of last years events, will consider that or curtailed. grown, now with a complement of four full-time My team in Hadleigh has staff and one parttime. Since it opened just four years ago, it is almost achieving the same amount of sales that my office does Claydon — and that opened in 1999! Whilst I had always felt that Hadleigh needed a reliable travel agency, I did not envisage such a rapid growth and I sincerely thank the residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding areas for making us so very welcome and for the support we have received. And in April 2017, on behalf of Travel Stop Hadleigh, I was extremely proud to receive the award for Top Travel Agency East of England! This is a prestigious award within the industry, and ranked us in the UK’s top 50 travel agents.
This year has seen our both staff undertake a wonderful amount of overseas travel, for business and pleasure. All corners of the globe seem to have been covered which I am always so pleased to see. I am a true believer that there is no better advice than that given opportunity presents itself from first-hand experience or knowledge. Therefore when a travel for a member of my team to attend, I always encourage them to go. We are very fortunate to receive some lovely invitations from the many tour operators with whom we work, and to experience the services provided by their teams both here and abroad. It is a fabulous way to be able to match and recommend a product. Ultimately, our aim is always to offer the best product to suit you, our customer. And if we do that well, you will hopefully come back to us time and time again.
During 2017, I have been to Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, the Netherlands, Egypt, Monaco, Portugal, and a 12-night private charter and Malta from Stansted’s Private Jet Terminal. This has been cruise by to Italy (including Sicily), Greece in addition to my ’mad-dash’ to five countries in three days; an event I participate in each year for charity. Since May, Cheryl has visited Spain, India, Monaco, Iceland and Abu Dhabi whilst this year, Anne has been to Barbados, New York and Moore, Boston, Italy and Monaco. One of our newest team members, Hannah who joined us in June 2016 and is based in our Claydon office, has been to Malta, Barbados, Hungary, Dubai, Mauritius, Spain and Portugal in the last 12 months! And this is to name but a few! Sometimes I wonder how they find time to come to work ...!
But most importantly, due to their passion for travel and their desire to provide an exceptional service, all of my team are always so happy to share experiences with you. Please feel free to make an appointment to come their and see me or any member of my staff at any time.
That brings me to say a big thank you once again for the continued support from all of our existing customers and we look forward to being of service to you, and all new customers, during 2018.
Oh yes, one more thing, I have just received the news that Travel Stop Claydon has been short-listed for 2018’s Top Travel Agency East of England! I wonder if we can do the double........?? Yours,
2

CAIRO & NILE CRUISE by Bridget Keevil
Have you always wanted to go to Egypt, but you really don’t think that the time is right? You imagine that the streets are full of dodgy looking people wherever you look, and it really isn’t safe to go? I have just been to Egypt (the first time in almost sixteen years) and can categorically say that it is a fabulous time to go. There aren’t the hoards of people queuing for hours in the hot sun to catch a glimpse of a relic – in actual fact it is so quiet it is an absolute pleasure being able to meander around at your own pace in relative comfort.
Our trip included both Cairo and a short Nile Cruise. We flew to Cairo, a very comfortable flight taking just under five hours and stayed at The First Residence, a Four Seasons Hotel on the Giza side of the river. There was visible security everywhere, with guns carried, but in this part of the world I fear that this is now a way of life. But in all the time we were in Egypt we did not see one incident of any kind nor feel unsafe or threatened.
With only one full day in Cairo it was to be a busy one, so we headed off to the Egyptian Museum where there was only a small queue to enter. Once inside the many rooms it houses we were free to look at any of the 120,000 objects in 107 halls for as long as we wished, the most popular being the Tutankhamun collection.
Afterwards, a short journey to the Mena House (where I stayed sixteen years ago) was our ideal setting for lunch, overlooking the Pyramids. This is the closest hotel to the Pyramids and actually walking distance. We drove to the parking area – a new addition in the last sixteen years - for our visit. The hundreds of Arabs that want to “sell” you a ride on a camel or horse are still there, along with a few hundred more who have that “exclusive” souvenir for $1 you can’t go home without, but a polite but firm “no thank you” does the trick!
The Pyramids, 4,500 years old and the only surviving Seven Wonder of the Ancient World, must be on everyone’s list for a first time visit to Cairo. They are spectacular, as is the legendary Sphinx which is purportedly the guardian to the site. It also helps
if you have the most knowledgeable and personable Egyptologist to guide you – ask me and I can request him for you!
The next day we took a short flight to Aswan to join the Sun Boat III – an Abercrombie & Kent owned boat and one of the best on the Nile. They have private docks in both Aswan and Luxor, so no clambering across several boats to get on and off. In actual fact, no clambering about at all – it is all very civilised. With just eighteen cabins and a maximum of 36 customers on board, it is a delightful way to journey from Aswan to Luxor or vice versa. We took a walk through the spice market of Aswan and partook in Egyptian Tea at a coffee house on the main square. Delightful! We felt like part of the local way of life for an hour or so.
The following morning we took a motor boat transfer to the Philae Temple on the Island of Agilika. Fabulous. How did something so old not only survive, but still look magnificent after relocating to its present home after the Nile was dammed at Aswan. We went to the temple of Kom Ombo in the afternoon – another superb site. It is hard to explain how each temple differs, but if you have a good guide the stories that make the place come to life will give each place a different personality.
Setting sail from Aswan for Luxor, a relatively short journey, saw us docking at some point near to midnight, and from here, our first stop was to the Valley of the Kings and the tomb of Tutankhamun (with said Pharaoh still in situ). No queue, but plenty of offers for ‘unmissable’ souvenirs (!) before heading on to the Temple of Hatshepsut – a splendid example of how buildings that old can still be intact. On the way back to the ship we saw so many artefacts dotted about the countryside – the place is just one big archaeological wonder. In the afternoon we saw the Karnak Temple and then, as night fell, we went to the Temple of Luxor. Being the time of calling to prayers, it made the whole place magical. All of this sightseeing was interspersed with excellent food and service, comfortable sleeping arrangements and superb staff on the boat. I cannot recommend the Sun Boat III highly enough – it is such a relaxed way to fit in so much. After only five nights we were on our way back to the airport and a direct flight back to London from Luxor – just under six hours travelling time. If I had to change anything, I would simply go back for longer!! 5

CANCUN, MEXICO by Karin Henry (Hadleigh Office)
Recently, I joined Funway Holidays on a trip to Mexico’s Riviera Maya and Cancun to visit a selection of properties in this area. Upon arrival, via Virgin Atlantic’s direct non-stop flight to Cancun, I was transferred to The Royal Playa del Carmen, an adult only property, which immediately impressed me. The choice of restaurants is excellent, all to a very high standard, especially the stylish Asiana restaurant which offers traditional and new flavour fusion options from an Asian fusion menu from Japan, China and Southeast Asia. I would recommend this property to clients wishing to be both on the beach and in the heart of the resort centre, being a short walk to 5th Avenue shopping, where there is a good choice of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and the famous Coco Bongos nightclub.
After breakfast in the Spice Restaurant, which offers a choice of international and traditional Mexican offerings, I visited The Panama Jack Gran Porto. This property is currently undergoing a full refurbishment and promises to be a great option for families and couples alike who enjoy being oceanfront but within walking distance of the resort centre. The refurbished rooms are contemporary and of a high standard and adults staying here can also use the facilities at The Royal Playa Del Carmen.
An enjoyable time was spent exploring Xcaret Park, which can be done on foot or in the water, negotiating the river swim. The walk through the park was lovely with rainforest experiences and animal and bird encounters, including flamingos and parrots. I would suggest it is well worth a visit for at least one full day.
Afterwards, I visited the Hyatt Zilara, an adult only property, and a lovely contemporary hotel close to downtown Cancun. This offers an excellent choice of restaurants and is on the widest stretch of beach in this area, recommended for those who like a livelier option. My favourite hotel however was the Hyatt Ziva; contemporary with beaches on both sides and a pool with resident dolphins. It is also within walking distance of downtown Cancun for nights out and shopping—ideal for couples, groups of friends and families, especially those with older children.
The Moon Palace Hotel is ideal for those looking for a resort holiday as it has a huge choice of excellent restaurants, bars and nightclub for evenings, as well as several pools and is beachfront. Being a very large resort it provides golf type buggies
to get around it. A meal at a Hibachi table in the Asian Momo Restaurant was wonderful, where my food was cooked in front of me by a very entertaining chef and was absolutely delicious.
My visit to the AMR Secrets The Vine Resort included a traditional ceremony where the top of a champagne bottle was removed with a sword! This beautiful contemporary boutique style hotel is a must for wine connoisseurs and/or honeymooners. It offers oceanfront suites with surround panoramic glass and ocean views on 2 sides as well as a huge wraparound balcony.
My last day in Mexico included visits to both Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort and Dreams Playa Mujeres. Both are beautiful hotels in lovely settings on a white sandy beach with an Asian feel to it and fantastic choices of facilities and restaurants which I would recommend to all, but especially families looking for luxury. This was my first visit to Cancun and Playa del Carmen and I was very impressed by the standards of the hotels, their facilities, the rooms - most had huge beds and hot tubs as standard. The service was mostly excellent and the quality of the food wherever I ate was of the highest standard; the best I have had anywhere in the world! I think it is hard to beat for value for money.
The beaches in both Playa Del Carmen and Cancun are mostly white sand and for those wanting a more scenic setting I would recommend Playa Mujeres. Although it doesn’t offer the scenery of the Caribbean islands I think it is a great alternative especially for those on a more limited budget looking for top quality. For those wishing to experience the Mayan historical sites I would recommend staying at the Riviera Maya.
Downtown Cancun is commercialised and is mainly for the late night party crowd or shopping, however this is some distance from most of the hotels but easy to get to. I feel that this area of Mexico offers something for everyone whether you are looking for complete relaxation, water sports including diving and swimming with dolphins, historical Mayan sightseeing or nightlife and shopping. I valued the opportunity to visit Mexico, had a truly memorable trip, and will be delighted to share my knowledge with anyone interested in a visit. Please do come and see me. 9

JAPAN
Open a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will see the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured an untold number of adventurers since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu - the Land of Gold”.
Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people.
This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century.
craftsmen and storekeepers who carefully maintain the old ways and keep alive the flame of Japan’s traditional culture.
As I travel further south I now find myself in Hiroshima, a city remerged from the atomic bombing. The peace flame burns in front of the memorial cenotaph, never to be extinguished until all nuclear weapons are abolished. A short distance from Hiroshima is the beautiful island of Miyajima, home to the Itsukushima shrine, a must-see for all, standing alone in the sea. The Shinto shrine is a world heritage site and is known as one of the ‘three views of Japan’.
There are some 55,000 ryokans in Japan; a room in a ryokan will usually contain an undivided room floored with tatami matting, while sleeping on a ‘futon’ bedding laid out by maids, and a traditional evening meal and breakfast.
The Journey
I start my journey in Tokyo the most exciting metropolis in Asia where traditions from centuries past exist side by side with the ever –moving elements of the latest in urban culture that radiate their own special heat and energy. Most of the clichés are true. Tokyo is neon-wrapped, a hectic playground where trains are never late, vending machines are everywhere and food doesn’t always lie still on your plate, but amid the bright signs and adverts there is also a Zen-like calm, often just a few steps away from the chaos.
My final stop is the beautiful island of Okinawa a chance to relax on a beautiful beach, sub tropical, coral reefs, emerald seas, sunny skies and tropical vegetation abound. There are more than 150 islands stretching a chain of 250 miles. There is no litter this is always taken home - therefore no need for bins either. This is an example of the remarkable social cohesion that Japan enjoys intertwined with its heart warming hospitality makes it such a pleasant place to live and to visit. Japan awaits you …..
It takes under 3 hours on the 200 mph bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto the cultural heart of Japan, an area spared from the air raids of WW2. On the journey you can visit Hakone an area of natural beauty and UNESCO site and then Mt Fuji, Japan’s spiritual home. Since the mountain is covered in snow most of the year, the official climbing season is limited to July & August. The climb is worthwhile but not easy; a saying goes there are two kinds of fools; those that never climb Fuji and those that climb it twice.
Arriving in the ancient capital for 1,200 years Kyoto has numerous shrines, temples, palaces and villas, repositories of Japan’s long history. You will still find geishas in the old Gion district, kimono weavers, sake breweries and numerous

PARIS & MONTE CARLO by Anita Crowson (Hadleigh Office)
Earlier this year, I had an amazing trip with Kirker Holidays to Paris and Monte Carlo. We travelled from St Pancras on the Eurostar in Standard Premier class. This class of travel gives you more spacious seats in a dedicated carriage where you are served a light meal and drinks. In around 2 hours and 15 minutes we reached Paris Nord. As you clear both British and French passport control in the UK you have no formalities on arrival.
We were taken on a very short walk across the street to the Brasserie du Terminus Nord for a two-course lunch. Located opposite the main station entrance, this is an atmospheric brasserie which is well frequented by locals and, with an excellent daily changing menu, this is an excellent place to eat if you are leaving Paris by train or on your way to Charles de Gaulle airport for a flight connection. After lunch, we visited the Musée d’Orsay. This museum is housed in a building that was originally a railway station along with a luxurious hotel and a grand reception room from which you can still see original features. We had a private guide for this visit which was excellent as it gave us a great insight into the many paintings, sculptures, photo’s, decorative arts and drawings that the museum presents in all its diversity. After this we checked into our hotel for the night Grand hotel du Palais Royal. This hotel is located close to the Louvre and has 68 rooms and one I would highly recommend.
rooms that have balconies with an amazing view of the hairpin bend. However these do come at a price of around 36,000 Euros for the 4 nights covering the Grand Prix!
Monaco has a different range of styles and size of hotels starting with the more traditional Columbus hotel, resort style Monte Carlo Bay, to the world-renowned Hotel de Paris. When we left Monaco we had a 7-minute helicopter transfer to Nice Airport. Again, I would highly recommend this if you are thinking of visiting Monte Carlo.
Kirker Holidays provide holidays to a wide range of destinations, including Paris, Monte Carlo or as I did, a combination of both. Within their pricing for Paris, they include transfers to and from the station or airport depending on your chosen mode of transport, a two-day museum pass which gives you access to over 60 museums and a carnet of five metro tickets.
The next day, prior to going to the airport for our onward flight to Nice, we had a whistle stop private guided sightseeing tour of a selection of the main attractions of Paris including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Moulin Rouge and the scenic view over Paris from Montmartre Sacre-Coeur.
Within their pricing for Monte Carlo, they include the ‘Passport to Monte Carlo’ which entitles the holder to complimentary entrance to a wide range of museums and attractions. If you travel between 1st November – 31st December or 2nd January – 31st March this also entitles you to complimentary return helicopter transfers. This year 3 nights in a 4* hotel including the ‘Passport to Monte Carlo’ started at a fantastic price of £437.00 per person including return flights and helicopter transfers.
An attractive city break destination, Monte Carlo rests on a prominent slope at the base of the Maritime Alps, providing a stunning landscape of mountains and sea. The region offers an engaging mix of historical and modern attractions including the pedestrianised medieval village of Monaco-Ville, the stunning Opera House and the popular Grand Casino. You will also find a selection of museums including the classic car collection of HSH The Prince of Monaco, which we were fortunate enough to visit.
The other main attraction in Monte Carlo is the annual Grand Prix. If you do decide to visit at this time, the Fairmont hotel has

PRIME TIME The lights can start to make an appearance as early as September and as late as May, but it is the winter months between October and March when they are most visible, laying claim to the night sky.

IMMERSIVE ADVENTURE
FRONT-ROW VIEWS Travelling at sea under the auroral zone means that displays can appear right above the ship. Outdoor observation decks provide a clear line of sight to the sky, and the close-up view avoids the artificial ambient light common on land.
You won’t find cinemas, shopping malls, or cabaret shows on a Hurtigruten ship. Instead, your entertainment is our wide range of seasonal shore excursions that bring you closer to the local culture and wildlife. The winter months feature over 35 optional extras such as: dog sledding © Jimmy Linus
There’s no time limit either, so you can enjoy them to your heart’s content for as often and for as long as they appear.

The Land of the Thunder Dragon calls those with a sense of adventure high into the mountains of the Himalayas. Buddhism here is not just a philosophy but a way of life: government policies are created in pursuit of Gross National Happiness, monasteries and temples dot the landscape, and monks in burgundy robes are ever-present in the community. Visitor numbers are strictly controlled so that the local way of life and the pristine environment can an be protected. Visiting environment be protected. Bhutan is an exclusive experience, and certainly one to be treasured. Trust Indus Experience to take you there.
The Jewel in the Crown seems like an entire continent within a single country. Everything you have heard, everything you have dreamed of, can be found here somewhere. You might want to take an architectural tour amongst the royal palaces, historic temples, and desert fortresses of Rajasthan. Perhaps what appeals is the Buddhist culture of Ladakh, visiting the UNESCO archaeological sites of Karnataka, or a laid-back expedition by houseboat along the waterways of Kerala. India has it all, and Indus Experiences’ destination specialists will create a unique programme for you to make the most of your time and budget.
Prepare to be awed by the beauty and the variety of destinations destinationsininSoutheast Southeast Asia. Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam have their distinct identities, but in each place you’ll find ancient cultures, dramatic landscapes, and a warm welcome from local people. The temples of Cambodian Angkor Wat are incomparable, but we’re sure you’ll be equally enthralled by Laos’ Pak Ou Caves with their thousand Buddha carvings, and the magnificent temple of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Indus Experiences creates both detailed single country tours and programmes for you to explore the entire region, comparing and contrasting destinations across Indochina.

VIETNAM
by Christine Vaughan (Hadleigh Office)
As a group of six travel agents, none of whom had ever visited Vietnam before, we boarded the Vietnam Airlines Dreamliner for our 10.5 hour flight to Hanoi. And it didn’t seem long before we were all checked into The Ann hotel! We were soon ready to enjoy our first real taste of Vietnam, and at this point I would like to say that the food is quite amazing, including for those who don’t eat meat, as they are extremely well catered for with delicious dishes.
A city tour of Hanoi followed, to see the modern day capital of Vietnam. A city that is centuries old but, although it does have a lot of new buildings and is very busy with bikes everywhere, still keeps so much charm. The museum of Ethnology was very interesting showing arts and ways of life from the 54 different ethnic groups that inhabit the country. We also visited the Hoan Kiev lake and Ngoc Son Temple, finishing the day at a very amusing water puppet show, a must for every visitor as a clever and a fantastic art form. Next day we continued our city tour of Hanoi with a trip to the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and a fine example of Vietnamese architecture. We then visited the iconic Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where we walked in silence past the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh, leader of the anti French resistance, Viet Minh.
flight to Danang, to visit central Vietnam. Vietnam is a large country, from north to south about 1400 miles, so air travel between the main areas saves a considerable amount of time and works extremely well. Travel by train is an alternative but can be very slow.
Now in Hoi An, where the weather here was slightly hotter, we travelled to My Son with our new local guide. This is an important religious site for the Cham civilisation who ruled central Vietnam from the 2nd to the 13th century and there are still temples there today in beautiful surroundings. Hoi An is a great place for a walking tour, with loads of good shopping opportunities and so reasonable. Once a prosperous trading port, this town now boasts well preserved streets and buildings with lovely beaches close by.
Then on to the Hoi An countryside, where we visited a coffee grower, mat weaver, boat builder and rice paper maker and when I asked to buy some coffee they acted as if this had never happened before!
From here, we transferred to the airport to fly to our last city Ho Chi Minh (the locals still call it Saigon). This city is massive and very busy, bikes everywhere and again smiley faces and happy folk. I found the war museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels very upsetting but a must-see to understand a little of the horror that the war had caused this country. To end this amazing trip, we had a day on the Mekong River with a brief sampan journey through the waterways visiting a bee farm and, even better, a coconut sweet-making home.
Another good flight home brought us all back to reality and lesser temperatures than those we’d left behind. The entire country has so much to offer and the people so happy for you to see their way of life and culture. I cannot recall a country which I have visited previously where I could not understand one road sign or where the currency is so hard to convert! But I will return, as there is still so much more to see! Following a delicious French-influenced lunch, we walked the train tracks, an interesting walk past houses so closely built beside the tracks that you can almost touch from side to side. Continuing our walk, we crossed dragon bridge with bikes zooming past us carrying families and lots of other items packed on as well! We returned by local train.
The following day, we joined an overnight cruise through the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay, from where we visited the Cua Van fishing village in bamboo rowing boats before having a cookery demonstration back on board by our chef and a talk on the area.
The next day, we made a visit on boats to a beach for swimming and the chance to climb 400 steep steps to see the view over the bay. After this we made our way back to Hanoi airport for our

SPOTLIGHT ON... LISBON
A fascinating city in a beautiful location, Lisbon is built on seven hills overlooking the River Tagus close to where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Lisbon is a city of contrasts, a rich mix of fascinating Portuguese history and contemporary culture, yet also a busy port and thriving economic centre. The subtropical Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and very warm summers, makes Lisbon an ideal destination at any time of year.
Lisbon has a fairly compact centre that contains many of the important sights, including Sao Jorge castle and the Royal Palace. A little further out is the suburb of Belém, with its famous Tower overlooking the River Tagus and the wonderful Jeronimos Monastery. Above all, it’s worth taking time to explore the different districts that make up the city centre, including Baixa with its elegant squares, broad avenues and rectangular layout. Baixa contrasts greatly with the narrow, winding streets and intimate corners of the Alfama district, with its Moorish remains, and the hilly Bairro Alto area. Fado is the traditional Portuguese folk music that originated in Lisbon and it’s worth heading to the Alfama or Bairro Alto districts to find the most authentic Fado bars and clubs in the city. Just 19 miles west of Lisbon, on the Atlantic coast, lies the former sleepy fishing village of Cascais, now a popular resort with elegant pedestrian streets, fashionable shops, restaurants and bars. Cascais is just a short train ride away from Lisbon, as is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra. Its slightly cooler climate attracted the nobility of Portugal who built the exquisite palaces, extravagant residences and decorative gardens visitors can enjoy today.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS, GERMANY by Helen Pardy-Taylor (Hadleigh Office)
December before last, I had the chance to head over to Germany’s Rhineland region and experience the sights and sounds of German Christmas markets, hosted by Fred. Holidays and the German National Tourist office.
I set off from London St Pancras on Eurostar (a fantastic alternative for those who want to avoid the hassle of flying) and, with a quick change at Brussels and Koln, I arrived within 5 hours. After a 10-minute taxi transfer, I arrived at the Hotel Maritim Bonn, just outside the city centre. A walk to the metro across the road, I was to arrive into Bonn city within 10 minutes. Bonn Christmas market is open 11:00am to 10:00pm and is located mainly on Munsterplatz and the surrounding streets. The bright, colourful stalls contrast beautifully with the historic buildings and city walls that they stand amongst. It’s quaint, traditional and, I thought, very compact. There are various gluhwein stalls, as well as those selling local handicrafts, charming decorations and food.
The following morning I enjoyed a walking tour of Bonn which gave me a great insight into certain events in this important city’s history. I was shown the house where Ludwig van Beethoven spent the first five years of his life, Poppelsdorf Palace, which the Prussian King Frederick-Wilhelm III turned into the main university building, and the gilded Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), where the Nazis once held one of their book burnings and more.
After leaving Bonn, I arrived at the towering skyline of Frankfurt, or Mainhattan as the locals like to refer to it. This nickname is apt due to the fact that the city is dissected by the Main River and that its 14 skyscrapers give it a similar look and feel to New York’s borough of Manhattan. I enjoyed a guided tour by coach and a visit to one of Germany’s largest and oldest Christmas markets. It spreads right across the Romerberg Square and this particular year boasted the tallest Christmas tree in Germany. The final day I was transferred to Koln. In Koln, famous for its breathtaking Gothic cathedral, the people of the city are proud
to be represented by three ‘K’s. Firstly there’s Karneval, the season of partying leading up to Lent; secondly there’s Kolsch, a word that refers to both the dialect spoken here and the type of beer the locals enjoy; and finally Kolnisch Wasser (literally water of Cologne), the fragrance which has led to the city’s name being used to describe perfume and aftershave worldwide.
There is a total of seven Koln Christmas markets throughout the city centre and I spent most time at one of the largest — the ‘Home of the Heinzel‘, situated in the Old Town. The stalls here seemed to be set out in a more orderly fashion, with even a map to help visitors find what they were looking for.
Germany is filled with some fantastic Christmas markets, and the three I saw were all excellent. It just leaves me wanting to return and spend longer in order to take in the lovely atmosphere.
Christmas markets are available throughout Europe, including Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium and many more. For further information on 2018 markets, please come and see me or one of our team.

INDIA’S GOLDEN TRIANGLE by Cheryl Locke (Claydon Office)
In April, I had the opportunity to visit India for the first time, to the wonderful cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The Taj Palace, a property in Delhi’s diplomatic district, was to be our first stop and, from here we took a tour of New Delhi. This included a visit to the parliament buildings, India Gate, and the area around and including Qutb Minar. Dinner was at the beautiful Imperial Hotel, a stunning colonial style hotel with impressive public areas and rooms and a real Oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city centre. We were very aware of the heightened security at all hotels and sightseeing attractions - we were scanned each time we entered (although not particularly meticulously!).
streets are a mix of colours, noises, smells – and plenty of bad driving! Here, whilst exploring the city, we even saw snake charmers on the pavements, encouraging their cobras from their baskets!
We were taken to the beautiful Amber Fort on the backs of elephants. There is an alternative option of a jeep transfer and once at the top of the hill, the views are stunning and the fort itself absolutely breath-taking. This was the only place we were absolutely inundated with street sellers, trying to offload anything they possibly could!
After an early start, we headed to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station for our journey to Agra, which was aboard the Gatimaan Express, India’s first semi high speed train that runs between Delhi and Agra. The service was really very good, and the journey provided a wonderful opportunity to see more of the real India.
Upon arrival into Agra rail station we saw our first glimpses of the poverty that exists. Given that it is a tourist town, there is a high proportion of beggars and unfortunate locals in poor health. However, whilst I had expected to witness this and it was, of course, somewhat distressing to see, it was not in the volumes that I had expected to see.
Straight then to the Agra Fort for a guided tour. The Agra Fort was the main residence of the Mughal dynasty until the 17th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In the evening we enjoyed a lovely meal at the stunning Oberoi Amarvilas property where even the lead in rooms have amazing views of the Taj Mahal!
A 5:30am start this morning for our visit to the Taj Mahal – for me, the highlight of the trip and undoubtedly the best time of day to visit. Again security was tight and all bags and bodies were scanned. Here only the bare minimum of water, phones and purses can be taken in. As expected, it was totally stunning.
Afterwards, we departed by bus for the long 5-hour drive to Jaipur, allowing us to see the sights en-route. Upon arrival we encountered typical Indian traffic. Even the journeys around the city are something to behold with Tuk Tuks and motorbikes whizzing in and out of the other cars. Families of 4 or 5 on the back of mopeds and the obligatory cattle wandering through the streets! With over 3 million people, it is large and busy and the
Afterwards, we enjoyed an interesting tour of the City Palace, inside the Pink City and home to some beautiful courtyards and gardens, where the current Maharaja lives. He’s just 18 years of age and we were shown the timeline of the Maharaja’s through the ages to the current day.
In the evening we were entertained at the exquisite Jai Mahal Palace Hotel— a low rise former palace with a colonial feel, set in acres of grounds and where all rooms are exquisitely furnished.
Following an internal flight back to Delhi we took the very impressive metro to Old Delhi – something I had been very apprehensive of doing. But it was clean, modern and incredibly cheap! Once in the centre of Old Delhi, we were met by our guide who walked us through the narrow backstreets to a traditional Delhi home where we enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal. We continued our walking tour giving us a taste of the real Delhi, travelling by both pedal rickshaw and Tuk Tuk, experiencing one or two crashes and a fair amount of shouting and beeping! Check in at Delhi airport was somewhat challenging and Fastrack immigration was far from “fast”. But all too soon, the trip was over. It was a truly fantastic visit to a country that is certainly unique. It is a total assault on all senses but, as part of an expertly guided tour, it really should be on one’s ‘bucket list’. And my one tip for anyone visiting India is HAND SANITISER! Well used throughout and the dreaded Delhi-Belly was totally avoided! 31

TRAVEL STOP’S TOP TIPS! Do you look forward to zooming off on your booked holidays? Or are you one of life’s worriers? After all, there are enough things that give us good cause — missing the plane, flights being delayed or cancelled, big queues etc.etc. That’s why we feel that if we can give you any advice to reduce the stress and hassle, or recommendations which will enhance your holiday, we will do so.
EXCESS BAGGAGE AND CHECK-IN CHARGES
This is an absolute minefield. These days you have to be on your guard from the moment you book your flights. You could face a host of extra charges and with all airlines tightening their rules on baggage weights, investing in a low cost set of travel scales could save you money and alleviate the worry on being over weight at check-in, especially on your return journey, as these can be easily packed in your hand luggage and taken with you.
WHAT AND WHERE ON A CRUISE SHIP?
All of our travel consultants have cruised but Madeleine, one of Travel Stop’s cruise experts, has herself cruised over a staggering 50 times! So who better to consult than Madeleine for advice and recommendations? She suggests:● ●

Whenever possible choose a cabin with a balcony. There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and stepping out onto your own balcony for a view of the sea or the latest port of call.
If Venice is a port of call on a Mediterranean cruise with an early morning arrival, make sure your cabin is on the starboard side—the approach to Venice and the leisurely sail along the Canale Della Giudecca is spectacular! Even better, have breakfast delivered to your cabin and enjoy it on your balcony! On a fly-cruise add on a pre-cruise stay as many ships sail out of wonderful cities such as Barcelona, Lisbon, New York and Copenhagen. It is a shame not to have a day or two to enjoy these cities. Check out your ports of call prior to sailing. Many, particularly in the Mediterranean, offer ‘Hop-on/Hop-off’ sightseeing tours with tickets which are valid all day. These pick up close to where the ship will dock. These are an ideal way of seeing local sights at very reasonable prices.
For information on both ocean cruising and river cruising, our consultants from all shops have first-hand experience of both. Please do call and they will be happy to share their knowledge and expertise with you.
COPING WITH JET LAG
Our bodies adjust to a natural rhythm that promotes sleeping at night and being active and alert during daylight hours. When we travel across differing ‘time zones’ our normal rhythm is altered. The sleep disturbance and loss of ability to concentrate, as well as the irritability felt during that time is called jet lag. If you are able to plan your itinerary, allow time on arrival for adjustment. Here are a few tips that can work to alleviate many of the symptoms of jet lag: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Try and book a flight that arrives in the evening so you won’t spend your first day trying to stay awake Do stretching exercises in your seat to avoid cramped muscles and walk around during your flight. Yawn or chew gum to avoid pressure build-up in the ears.
Drink plenty of water before and during your flight, keeping well-hydrated, and avoid alcohol and coffee. Wear comfortable travel clothes, especially shoes. Be well rested before you leave.
Make sure your pre-flight diet contains plenty of starch, carbohydrates and greens. Set your watch to the time of your destination before you board.
Arrange in-flight meals to reflect the time-of-day at your destination.

PRE-BOOK AIRPORT CAR PARKING
This is an absolute must! Many UK airports inflate their charges during school holidays, especially Christmas and Easter. For example, earlier this year Heathrow were reported* to have been charging up to £4 more per day between July 21st to August 21st, whilst Stansted’s fees were £2 higher per day from May to September. This means that travellers can pay more to park than to fly! Therefore those failing to book in advance can face premiums of up to 400 per cent! And London City Airport imposes huge penalties for failing to book ahead. A spokesman said that booking was significantly cheaper if booked in advance because it helps manage demand and keep traffic moving. Remember that prices are also often driven by demand - therefore the earlier you book, often the cheaper it is. * Daily Mail Saturday 8th July 2017
TAKING LIQUIDS THROUGH SECURITY
There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check in). If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:
● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Containers must hold no more than 100ml
Containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm Contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed The bag must not be knotted or tied at the top You are limited to 1 plastic bag per person
You must show the bag at the airport security point
Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally can’t go through security even if the container is only part full.
TOP TIP: A third of our airports now charge passengers for clear plastic bags to take liquids through security! Some are charging £1 per bag whilst several others are charging £1 for two bags. Therefore ensure you take with you the bag that Travel Stop includes with your tickets!
OTHER USEFUL THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU TRAVEL ● ● ● ● ●
● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
Wear easy to remove belts and footwear in case you are asked to remove them at airport security Learn as much as you can about the culture and etiquette of the country you are visiting
Check out what’s on whilst you’re there - if it’s busy, or a ticketed event that interests you, you may miss out if you don’t plan and book in advance Try to get hold of some coin or small note denominations for immediately upon arrival for things like luggage trolleys or tipping
Pick up a business card of your hotel upon arrival or enter the address and room number into your phone. Should you be out and about and have difficulty in communicating, it’s easier to show this to a taxi driver than struggle with a potential language barrier Put the emergency telephone number for your insurance company in your phone Don’t forget to take the correct adapter for your destination and chargers for your electronic devices Always pack your medication in your hand luggage
Alert your bank and credit cards of your travel plans
Ask the locals to point out the best restaurants, awesome spots to watch the sunset, the best coffee shops, etc.
Visit popular tourist attractions as early as possible to avoid the crowds Hire a local guide
Pre-book your airline seats to ensure you are sitting together and extra legroom seats where possible 33
