LED Drivers by Mean Well
In response to the demands of intelligent LED lighting control and to provide a flexible power solution for project style lighting design, Mean Well developed a multiple-stage output current LED power supply LCM-40 with “constant current output” design. The output current level can be flexibly selected by the built-in DIP switch. The models are designed with “2-in-1” dimming function (0~10V DC and PWM signal), while the digital control model, LCM-40 DA, has a built-in DALI interface and push dimming function.

Mean Well was established in 1982 specialising in the design and manufacture of switched power supplies distributed throughout the world via authorised distributors.
All products comply with certificates UL8750, ENEC EN61347-2-13, and EN62384 of lighting regulations. The LCM-40 also complies with IEC62386-101, 102, and 207 norms per DALI lighting control systems.

The Project Big Yellow Self Storage Company Ltd. is a UK-based self-storage company providing solutions for homes and businesses. Operating out of 77 purposebuilt storage facilities across the country, it offers spaces ranging from three feet to several thousand square feet.
Case Study
Big Yellow works hard to create an environmentally friendly business and has achieved recognition as one of the best green companies in a 2011 Sunday Times list. It was also given a Queen’s Award for sustainable development in 2012. As part of its continuous drive to reduce its carbon footprint, in 2011 Big Yellow started a programme to replace existing fluorescent light fittings with LED equivalents. An operation of this size called for a reliable company with a quality product that delivered excellent light output, significant electricity savings and a long maintenance-free life expectancy.
The Solution Before committing to a large-scale rollout, Big Yellow conducted monitored trials with several LED lighting manufacturers to find a good quality retrofit LED tube to replace its existing T8 fluorescent tubes. During this trial period, Big Yellow tested light output, energy consumption and appearance of several LED tubes within its storage facilities. After coming out top in these criteria, NET LED’s products were selected for installation across 8 Big Yellow stores in 2012. Following the successful installations, and with significant enery savings already achieved, Big Yellow accelerated its installation programme and installed in excess of 20,000 LED tubes in a further 34 stores in 2013.
The Result Since making the switch to LED, the company is now operating under high quality LED lighting while making substantial savings on its overheads. By incorporating the LED tubes provided by NET LED, Big Yellow reduced energy costs incurred by lighting by 65%. In addition, the company has seen a significant saving on maintenance costs, as the LED lighting has a life expectancy of more than 50,000 working hours. The Project
Quality
At the heart of The British Library in London, a tall glass tower - the King’s Library Tower - houses books collected by King George III (reigned 1760-1820). It is considered one of the most significant collections of the Enlightenment, containing books printed mainly in Britain, Europe and North America from the mid 15th to the early 19th centuries, with 65,000 volumes of printed books, and 19,000 pamphlets. The collection’s home is the six-storey King’s Library Tower, designed specifically for the purpose. The books are on view to visitors behind UV-filter glass which, together with the environmental control system, helps maintain appropriate light, temperature and humidity levels.
The Solution After a technical evaluation, NET LED’s Tubes were chosen for lighting this precious collection. Using the latest solid-state, surface-mount LED technology, 1800mm (6ft) LED Tubes, could achieve the precise colour temperature and lighting levels whilst reducing the power consumption by over 60%. Additional savings are also achieved in running the environmental control system as the heat output of an LED Tube is significantly less than that of a fluorescent.
The Result Commenting on the installation of the LED Tubes, Patrick Dixon, Head of Building Services at The British Library said: “Unlike fluorescent tubes, the LED Tubes produce no UV light which would be damaging to the books. They also use only a third of the electricity of fluorescents and last over three times longer, providing significant environmental and financial benefits for the Library.” As well as being widely used for lighting in offices, factories, hospitals and retail outlets, LED Tubes provide an ideal lighting solution for museums and galleries as they do not emit any UV light, and they are available in a range of colour temperatures with reliable colour rendering. They only use a third of the electricity of equivalent fluorescents which also has the benefit of reduced heat output when lighting valuable collections.

The Project
Case Study
One of the UK’s largest independent McDonald’s franchise groups is owned by Mr Eddie Leligdowicz and includes ten restaurants spanning the three counties of Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire. The restaurants turn over around £24 million per annum, serving tens of thousands of customers per day. Mr Leligdowicz is committed to energy saving technologies to improve efficiency in his restaurants; these include the installation of NET LED Lighting in the kitchens at McDonald’s Markeaton Park in Derbyshire.
The Solution The kitchen has 19 light fittings. Before LED Lighting was installed, each fitting had two 5ft 58W fluorescent tubes and ballasts, so the total wattage was approximately 125W per fitting. The fluorescent tubes were replaced with 5ft LED Tubes running at 22W each with no ballast required, so each fitting now runs at only 44W, a saving of 65% in electricity consumption. Furthermore, the life expectancy of the LED Tube is over 3 times that of the fluorescents, making further savings in maintenance costs and waste disposal. These savings are expected to give a payback in under two years.
The Result In addition to the 38 LED Tubes in the main kitchen, an additional 32 LED Tubes are being used in other parts of the restaurant, including the store room, cold room, corridors and office. Mr Eddie Leligdowicz, McDonald’s Franchisee, is delighted with the electricity savings and the reduced maintenance provided by the LED Tubes meaning he won’t need to replace them for around 6 years. This is consistent with other social responsibility initiatives the restaurant group is undertaking to reduce waste and lower its carbon footprint. As well as the significant cost savings, LED Tubes provide ideal lighting for kitchens and food processing environments as they contain no glass, thereby reducing a potential health and safety hazard from broken lamps. LED Tubes are very robust, being made from aluminium with a strong polycarbonate cover, and they do not contain any of the toxic chemicals such as phosphor, mercury or lead which are found in fluorescent lamps.

The Project
Case Study
Hertfordshire Constabulary’s policing style and organisation is designed to provide a modern, flexible force and an effective policing service for Hertfordshire. Consistent with these objectives is the desire to be environmentally responsible, so during 2010 and 2011 Herts Constabulary installed hundreds of 2ft LED Tubes in place of the old fluorescents.
The Solution During 2010, 802 2ft LED Tubes running at 8W were installed in police premises. These replaced 18W fluorescents strip lights. The LED Tubes do not require starters or ballasts (which also consume power) thereby making additional energy savings and removing components which would otherwise require ongoing maintenance.
The Result The savings in electricity consumption achieved are over 60%, giving a corresponding carbon dioxide reduction. Furthermore, the LED Tubes last over three times longer than the fluorescents, saving Herts Constabulary lamp replacement maintenance costs. The longer life of the LED Tubes also means less actual waste disposal of failed tubes, starters and ballasts, which has significant environmental benefits as fluorescents contain the toxic chemicals phosphor, mercury and lead, as well as being made of glass.
The Company NET LED Lighting specialises exclusively in the supply of LED lighting. Case xxxx Study
The Project Red Funnel is an integrated transport, travel and leisure company employing some 400 people in Southampton and on the Isle of Wight. Operating the largest ferry service to and from the island, Red Funnel carries over 3 million passengers each year. The company historically incorporated fluorescent tubes in the passenger loading bays of its ferries and metal halide floodlights on deck and on their jetties. As part of their commitment to reducing energy and maintenance costs, Red Funnel chose NET LED Lighting for its solution.
The Solution Because of the nature of Red Funnel’s operations certain areas are in constant use and therefore require quality, reliable lighting at all times. The internal drivers and long life expectancy (50,000 working hours) of the LED lighting provide this reliability, as well as massively reduced maintenance costs normally associated with large-scale lighting operations. The LED Floodlights have weather-proof IP65 housing that are perfect for use on the waves. Opting for 5ft LED Tubes in the gangways on ferries, 2ft LED Tubes in the car decks, and high power LED Floodlights on its jetties, Red Funnel is seeing 65% savings on their energy and maintenance costs. LED Tubes are designed with rotatable end caps allowing for quick and easy installation.

The Solution Following a successful trial of NET LED’s Tubes a complete refit of the car park lighting was undertaken replacing all 350 tubes. The 6ft 72W fluorescents were replaced with LED Tubes consuming only 22W and the 5ft 59W fluorescents with 18W LED Tubes. The work was undertaken by DH Croft Ltd.
The Result The end result not only provided a far better level of lighting, as can be clearly seen in the 2 photos, but more importantly, following detailed power consumption monitoring before and after the installation, the annual savings are calculated at £13,390. This equates to a carbon footprint reduction of 67 tonnes CO2. In addition to these savings, the ongoing maintenance costs will also be greatly reduced as the expected life of the new LED Tubes is in excess of 50,000 hours (11 years assuming 12 hours usage per day).

A light-emitting diode (LED) is an electronic light source. The LED was introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962. All early devices emitted lowintensity red light, but modern LEDs are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infra red wavelengths, with very high brightness. LEDs are based on the semiconductor diode. When the diode is forward biased (switched on), electrons are able to recombine with holes and energy is released in the form of light. This effect is called electroluminescence and the colour of the light is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. The LED is small in area (less than 1mm²) with integrated optical components to shape its radiation pattern and assist in reflection.
Operating Life LEDs are solid-state devices so are not subject to catastrophic failure when operated within design parameters. LEDs are designed to operate upwards of 50,000 hours at 25°C ambient temperatures. Operating life is characterised by the degradation of LED intensity over time. Quality LEDs should provide a useful light output > 50,000 hours. After which ongoing degradation will result in the end of its useful life, although the LED will continue to operate as output diminishes for up to 100,000 hours.

Fluorescent Versus LED
When comparing the costs of fluorescent strip lights with LED tubes, it is important to take into account the total cost of ownership - not just the prices of the respective tubes, as you are not comparing like-for-like.
The benefits of upgrading your existing lighting to LED lighting are numerous, and include reduced running costs, longer product life and improved eco friendliness. The main benefits of switching to LED lighting are:
An LED product typically reduces your electricity
This can be done by considering the total costs of installation and maintenance, and the total running costs which when combined give the total cost of ownership and hence the true savings which can be achieved by installing LED tubes.

An LED product lasts over three times longer so additional savings are achieved in capital, labour and administration costs normally associated with regularly having to replace lamps, starters and ballasts;
LED tubes will typically last three times longer than the equivalent fluorescents and do not require control gear (ballasts and starters) which are needed to light fluorescents. During the life of one LED tube, it is likely that you would have to use three fluorescents, three starters, and replace the ballast once. These hardware costs, plus the labour costs to replace them, will normally far exceed the cost of installing an LED tube, even before any running costs are considered.
No ultra violet (UV) light is produced. UV light is not only potentially hazardous to people, but it damages materials, fading colours in fabrics and artwork;
LED tubes contain no glass, no phosphor, no mercury, and no lead, all typically found in fluorescents, so they can be more easily and safely recycled with all the associated costs and environmental savings achieved.

LED Technical Glossary Ampere (Amp) – The unit for measuring rate of flow of electrical current: Current (Amps) = Power (Watts) / Voltage (Volts) Brightness – Often used incorrectly with respect to illumination as a synonym for luminous flux. An objective measurement of the visible power of a light source. The term is correctly used when describing screen brightness in a display or television.
LED Technical Glossary
Colour Rendering Index (CRI) – A measure of the degree of colour shift objects undergo when illuminated by the light source as compared with those same objects when illuminated by a reference source of comparable colour temperature. The reference source has a CRI of 100. Colour temperature – The description used to describe the effect of heating an object until it glows incandescently. The emitted radiation, and apparent colour, changes proportional to the temperature; easily envisioned when considering hot metal in a forge that glows red, then orange, and then white as the temperature increases. Delivered Light – The amount of light a lighting fixture or lighting installation delivers to a target area or task surface, measured in footcandles (fc) or lux (lx). Diffuser – An object with irregularities on a surface causing scattered light diffusions. Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) – A digital communications protocol for controlling and dimming lighting fixtures, originally developed in Europe. Efficacy – The light output of a light source divided by the total electrical power input to that source, expressed in lumens per watt (lm/W). Flux / Luminous Flux – Luminous flux is the measure of the perceived power of light produced by the LED, adjusted to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light. Forward voltage – LEDs are current driven devices. If an external current is passed through the device, a forward voltage will be developed across the diode. Heat Sink – A part of the thermal system that conducts or convects heat away from sensitive components, such as LEDs and electronics. High Power LED – A high power LED, sometimes referred to as a power LED, is one that is driven at a current of 350 mA or higher. Illuminance – The intensity of light falling on a surface area. If the area is measured in square feet, the unit of illuminance is footcandles (fc). If measured in square metres, the unit of illuminance is lux (lx).

Kelvin Temperature – Term and symbol (K) used to indicate the comparative colour appearance of a light source when compared to a theoretical blackbody. Yellowish incandescent lamps are 3000K. LED Chip (Chip) – The light producing semiconductor device that may or may not be incorporated into an LED. LED Driver – An electronic circuit that converts input power into a current source — a source in which current remains constant despite fluctuations in voltage. An LED driver protects LEDs from normal voltage fluctuations, overvoltages, and voltage spikes. Light Emitting Diode (LED) – A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a solid-state semiconductor device that converts electrical energy directly into light. At its most basic level, the semiconductor is comprised of two regions. The p-region contains positive electrical charges while the n-region contains negative electrical charges. When voltage is applied and current begins to flow, the electrons move across the n region into the p region. The process of an electron moving through the p-n junction releases energy. The dispersion of this energy produces photons with visible wavelengths. Lumen (lm) – The international (SI) unit of luminous flux or quantity of light and equals the amount of light that is spread over a square foot of surface by one candle power when all parts of the surface are exactly one foot from the light source. Lumen Output – The total lumens emitted of a light source, system, or solution. Luminaire – A lighting fixture complete with installed lamps and other accessories. Lux (lx) – The international (SI) unit of illuminance, or luminous flux incident on a unit area, frequently defined as one lumen per square meter (lm/m²). Power Factor – The active power divided by the apparent power (i.e., product of the rms input voltage and rms input current of a driver). SMDs – Surface-mount LEDs. Ultraviolet (UV) – Electromagnetic radiation with wavelength shorter than that of visible light Volt – The term used to describe the electrical potential difference between oppositely charged conductors. Watt – The unit of electrical power as used by an electrical device during its operation. Many lamps come with rating in watts to indicate their power consumption.
