by Nancy-TOM Youngbrandt Since the early days of the Church there have been two approaches to walking out one's salvation through Jesus Christ: one being an outward approach with God and Jesus Christ at a distance, preferring that God work through a man such as a pastor or priest, or even a prophet, once in a while. Then there are those who desire another approach, seeking intimacy in an inner relationship with Jesus Christ, abiding in His Presence and praying to be filled and led by God's Holy Spirit from the inside out. In truth, this difference goes back further than Jesus' time on Earth. It goes all the way back to at least Moses' time with Israel during the Exodus from Egypt. As you may recall, there came a time when Moses returned from one of his visits with God, so filled with God's Light that his face literally shone with the Light of God. When people saw this, Moses told them that it was God's desire that everyone should come before God and spend time with Him, receiving His Word for themselves. Their response? "No thank you!" The people ended up telling Moses, in essence, that they preferred he go before God and whatever God tells him, they will do. And they wanted Moses to put a veil over his face. I believe the reason for that was because when one is in the presence of God and His Light shines upon us, it reveals any darkness within us. It can get uncomfortable as that which is sin, flesh and carnality is revealed for what it is: unclean and, at times, against God. The same thing was said about Jesus in the New Testament. In John 15:22 Jesus tells us, "IF I HAD NOT COME AND SPOKEN UNTO THEM, THEY HAD NOT HAD SIN: BUT NOW THEY HAVE NO CLOAK FOR THEIR SIN" It can be a lot to deal with and most people don't want to go there. It is painful at times; it is humbling, even shameful to see what is at work in us, but it is necessary if we want to have more of God, more of Jesus Christ, in our lives. As Jesus tells us, we must give up our old life to gain our new life in Him. As a final note in regards to those who told Moses, "you tell us what God says and we'll
