A word of introduction
L
ooking back at 2012, we get the impression of a year full of changes and celebrations.
Likvidace lepry (Eradication of Leprosy) celebrated its 20th anniversary,
our bulletin Misionář malomocných (Lepers’ Missionary) its 18th anniversary and it is six years since St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bhilai Pahari was inaugurated. Thus it may come as little surprise that a new home for the little ones from the hospital’s vicinity – an orphanage, if you like – was opened in December. As for changes, there have been

PROFILE
LL-TB
Likvidace lepry – TB is a church legal entity established by the Archbishopric of Prague. It is a follow-up to the civic association LL – Likvidace lepry o. s. set up by Jiří Holý.
The prime aim of Likvidace lepry – TB is to help cure leprosy and tuberculosis in third-world countries and to alleviate the negative consequences of these diseases. This is done through direct support for two hospitals in India (in the states of West Bengal and Jharkand) or by providing drugs in co-operation with a similar association Action Medeor and supporting individual leprosaria and out-patient clinics in co-operation with the association DAHW, which has been helping lepers for over fifty years. Likvidace lepry – TB has left its footprints in approximately sixty missionary centres, leprosaria and mobile clinics in Africa, Asia and South America. During the 20 years of its existence Likvidace lepry – TB has provided them with 120,000,000 CZK worth of pharmaceuticals and sanitary goods. Our bulletin Misionář malomocných was first published in 1994 in 10,000 copies, now its circulation surpasses 50,000 copies. It brings information to our donors about the activities of Likvidace lepry – TB as well as further education and advice about what can be done by anyone to help cure leprosy and TB. With the same purpose radio programmes have been prepared and broadcast by the radio station Proglas. Starting 2011 we have organized yearly pilgrimages of friends and benefactors of Likvidace lepry – TB: following the tradition of the last Sunday in January being devoted to prayers for people suffering from leprosy, Likvidace lepry – TB organizes a pilgrimage to a cathedral in one of the Czech or Moravian dioceses. This offers opportunities not only for common prayers but also personal encounters of those united in this work of love. 2

Our part n er s
Likvidace lepry – TB helps in many places around the world. This help is effective especially thanks to our strong and experienced partners who have been working in this field for a very long time.
DAHW was founded in 1957 as a religiously and politically independent organization called Deutsches Aussätzigen-Hilfswerk. This name was changed in 2003 to Deutsche Lepra und Tuberkulosehilfe because the scope of its activities was broadened to involve treating patients suffering from TB. This organization, resident in Würzburg, Germany, operates in 300 places around the world. DAHW is a member of the international organization for the treatment of leprosy ILEP, which means that all projects are coordinated on a worldwide scale and thus double-financing of the same project is impossible. In 2010 DAHW was honoured by Price Waterhouse Coopers for transparent operation as well as independent high-quality reports. Individual projects depend on particular local needs and have a wide scope of action from providing individual hospitals 4
with sanitary goods and drugs to staff education and social support for both patients and people who have been cured but are still looking for their place in society. DAHW co-operates with local state and/or church authorities. For the sake of sustainability, due attention is paid to employing local staff and effective use of the provided means. Out of the total amount that Likvidace lepry – TB spends on projects, usually 40 per cent, i.e. most often over 4 million CZK, is placed through DAHW.
Action Medeor, founded in 1964 and resident in TĂśnisvorst, Germany, is a non-governmental charitable organization specializing in pharmaceuticals distribution in third-world countries. A great advantage of Action Medeor is that it operates even in places where other organizations do not (since it is impossible or too costly for them), which is enabled by its long tradition and thorough knowledge of the local situation and at the same time by building large-capacity storage
sites in the relevant countries, e.g. in Tanzania, the country with the largest incidence of leprosy in Africa. Currently, it supplies drugs and sanitary goods to 9,000 hospitals and clinics in more than 140 countries. Local distribution is then organized through local carriers. Action Medeor also supports the development of local pharmaceutical production and offers consultant services e.g. for vaccine quality etc. Out of the total amount that Likvidace lepry – TB spends on projects, usually 20 per cent, i.e. over 2 million CZK, is spent on drugs through Action Medeor.

Our pr o j ect s
B
esides co-operation with the German organizations DAHW and Action Medeor Likvidace lepry – TB co-finances the operation of two hospitals in India which were built largely from Czech aid.
1 st C z e c h - I n d i a n H o s p i t a l i n B h i l a i P a h a r i The construction of the 1st Czech-Indian Hospital did not have an easy start. After several years of negotiations with the Indian government the situation was solved with the help of the Bishopric in Jamshedpur. The construction itself started in 2003 on a site in Bhilai Pahari belonging to the Jamshedpur Bishopric and full operation of the hospital began on December 12th 2006. Jamshedpur Bishopric remains the strategic partner of the whole project; it now owns the hospital and thus carries full legal responsibility. In coordination with Likvidace lepry – TB it appoints and suspends the director of the hospital as well as the treasurer and other key workers. The nurses are nuns, who are not paid; the employees, i.e. doctors and other personnel are Indians. At the end of 2012 an orphanage was opened – Infant Jesus House - for children from the local area, where employees strive to give the little ones the love and understanding of a home. Besides the hospital there is a farm in Patamda, the produce of which helps supply the whole establishment (hospital, Sisters’ home, orphanage, employees) with staple food. The project also involves a mobile clinic, which caters to patients in the area, the above-mentioned Infant Jesus House and St. Joseph’s School, which offers basic education to children – often orphans whose parents died of leprosy. With 1.5 million CZK, i.e. 15 per cent out of the sum spent on projects, Likvidace lepry – TB provides funding for the basic operation of the hospital.

2 nd C z e c h - I n d i a n H o s p i t a l i n P h u l p a h a r i The 2nd Czech-Indian Hospital in Phulpahari is located approximately 100 km from Calcutta in the inland region of Midnapore called Phulpahari. The site has an area of approximately 45,000 sq. metres. Our partner in this project is the Archbishopric of Calcutta represented by Archbishop Msgr. Lucas Sirkar, SDB, who consecrated the corner stone on May 10th 2008 in the presence of the then Czech ambassador to India Dr. Hynek Kmoníček. To build the hospital, the original project from Bhilai Pahari was adapted to local conditions and enlarged to double the size. The actual construction was started in January 2008, partial operation began in 2010 and the full capacity of 80 beds in January 2012. So far it has been difficult to find doctors for full-time employment, so the eight vacancies are currently filled by several doctors who come to work several days a week. There are twelve nurses, four technical workers and eight part-time workers. The hospital should cater not only to in-patients but also to the poorest in the area through a mobile clinic. Likvidace lepry – TB’s support varies according to needs: First, funds were needed for the construction of the hospital, then the equipment and operation. In 2012 more than 3 million CZK were spent.

Projects in co-operation with DAHW and Action Medeor
O
ur strategic partners DAHW and Action Medeor are extremely important for transportation of pharmaceuticals and sanitary goods. Both these organizations are registered in Germany and have a very long tradition, which enables them to achieve something otherwise nearly impossible, namely to import pharmaceuticals free of duty to countries that normally charge very high duties, to buy drugs and sanitary goods at considerably discounted prices, and to transport goods to regions difficult to access. Co-operating with these strategic partners does not mean that Likvidace lepry – TB does not have direct contact with the missionary hospitals and clinics. On the contrary, our task remains to communicate with individual people (often religious) there and then to order precisely what they need. And only when the goods are delivered and the delivery is confirmed as appropriate, do we pay the invoice issued in our name.

Our activitie s
Misionář malomocných Misionář malomocných is Likvidace lepry – TB’s bulletin, issued three times a year (at Easter, in summer and at Christmas), which informs about the organization’s activities. The highlight of the Easter 2012 issue was an interview with the new director of the Czech-Indian Hospital in Phulpahari Fr. Reginald Fernandes. For many years he has served as head of the Seva Kendra Organization in Calcutta and has been involved in the project of the hospital since the very beginning. The summer issue dealt with the projects that we support through Action Medeor and DAHW while the Christmas issue introduced the newly opened orphanage Infant Jesus House in the hospital complex in Bhilai Pahari. In total, 127,000 copies of the bulletin were distributed in 2012. Misionář malomocných is published as a periodical registered by the Ministry of Culture with the number MK ČR 6706.
Inauguration of the Infant Jesus House The Czech-Indian complex in Bhilai Pahari, headed by Fr. George Mannarakam and lying approximately 300 km from Calcutta, obtained a new addition: on December 16th a new orphanage for children from the area was opened with a special ceremony.

Council of Likvidace lepry – TB Likvidace lepry – TB presents its results and reports to the Archbishop of Prague for approval but only after they are debated in the Council of Likvidace lepry – TB. The Council’s task is also to offer advice and inspiration to the president of Likvidace lepry – TB. The members of the Council are Mr. Jiří Holý (former president of Likvidace lepry), Mr. Bedřich Novák (former auditing committee member) and Ing. Jiří Smolka (former committee member).
National pilgrimage of the friends of Likvidace lepry – TB The year 2012 saw the first national pilgrimage of the friends of Likvidace lepry – TB, namely on January 28th in the St. Wenceslas Cathedral in Olomouc. Holy mass was celebrated and then donors met in a nearby café.
Meetings with DAHW Occasional meetings with our DAHW partners strengthen our co-operation and enable sharing experience and ideas in our common task. In September another one of these was held in Würzburg, Germany. Thanks to these contacts we were able to host three lectures by Manfred Göbel, a lay missionary, who has spent all his life among lepers in Brazil. These lectures were held after mass in churches in Prague and in Brno and also in a Christian secondary school in Třebíč in late spring.

T
oday we often hear that aid must be constructive and speedy, effective and self-sustainable. Leprosy requires slow and
demanding work, we can even say never-ending work, because the bacteria of leprosy can survive for decades and the incubation period can also last decades. That is why leprosy probably cannot be eradicated within our lifetime. It is our great joy that thanks to you, our friends and supporters, Likvidace lepry has been here for 20 years to work on this difficult task. If there are any changes for the better, it is only due to consistent long-term effort. We can harvest the fruit of this effort and your philanthropy every year: a smile on the face of a child cured of a malign disease, the gratitude in the eyes of an old person that there is someone who is not indifferent to his or her fate. Our common interest – to provide aid to leprosy or TB stricken people – is really special. As Mother Theresa of Calcutta once said: her work – as well as ours – is only a drop in a vast ocean, however, if that work were not done, the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. We would like to thank all of you that supported us in 2012 and helped us (through financial donations, prayers or however else) to perhaps turn this “drop” into a little trickle of love.
