May 14, 2010 Dear Staff, I want to bring you up to date with some very exciting news about our new bell schedule. As you know, the Bell Schedule Action Team recommended to the Paly Ed Council that we move ahead with a four-day block schedule for 2010 – 2011. The Ed Council endorsed the action team’s recommendation and began working on the details of the new bell schedule several weeks ago. Our discussions focused on three areas: • • •

Students’ needs; Teachers’ needs; and Logistical needs.

During the course of two day-long retreats, the members of Ed Council analyzed and vetted a wealth of information. In its first day long retreat, the Ed Council worked on the philosophical underpinnings of the tutorial period and determined that the most compelling considerations were both the academic success and the socialemotional well-being of each and every student at Paly. Based on these considerations, Ed Council determined that the tutorial period would be mandatory for every student and that, in order to maximize the contact between adults and students, as many certificated staff members as possible, including administrators and counselors, would be involved. We recognize that the implementation of both a 4-day block schedule and a tutorial period, requires that the teachers at Paly carry the greater burden for restructuring our school day but we also believe that it is worth the necessary effort and commitment. We believe that it is truly in the best interest of our students’ academic success and social emotional health. During the Ed Council’s second retreat, the work focused on determining the actual bell schedule and the logistics of the tutorial period. Our deliberations considered the following elements: • • • •

Start and end times of the day Length of the block Transitions – number and length Length and placement of structures that support the academic identity of all students – advisory & tutorial

After careful reflection and many hours of work, we finalized the bell schedule. I have attached a copy for you to review. Information regarding the parameters and logistics of the tutorial period will follow next week. Again, I want to thank the Bell Schedule Action Team and Ed Council for their tremendous dedication to this process. As we move forward with the pilot of our new schedule for next year, we will continue to monitor its effectiveness. All the best, Jacquie
