Home to spectacular views of the area and is a non-alcoholic family campground on South Holston Lake in historic Sullivan County. Historic Blountville’s Deery Inn

Shortly after the American Revolution was won, along the dusty path that was one of the young nation’s first highways, the doors of the Deery Inn first opened to weary travelers on the western frontier. Though now weathered by time, those doors – actually signed by many of those travelers, including a president of the modern United States – is open as a museum to welcome visitors to the inn, which serves as the centerpiece of one of the country’s prototype walking tours, the Great Stage Road walking tour. Archives & Regional History Center

A hidden gem for historians and genealogists, the Archives and Regional Center houses a wealth of historical research. Located within the Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism, adjacent to the Sullivan County Courthouse, the center is home to hundreds of historic manuscripts, photographs, family histories, and state/county histories. Birthplace of Country Music Alliance

Recognized by the U.S. Congress as the official “Birthplace of Country Music,” Bristol plays tribute to the heritage of traditional bluegrass and country music. Daily concerts, events, and jam-sessions are available yearround at a variety of venues. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area

The first permanent settlement outside the thirteen colonies, Sycamore Shoals served as the muster point for the Overmountain Men on their way to the Battle of King’s Mountain. Visit the reconstruction of Fort Watauga, explore the museum and enjoy the year-round interpretive program. An outdoor drama, “Liberty-The Saga of Sycamore Shoals” is offered in mid-July. Roan Mountain Rhododendron Gardens

A naturalist’s paradise, rich in plant and animal life, the 6,285-foot peak offers breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountain range. In mid-June the Catawba rhododendron burst into a spectacular display of blossoms covering more than 600 acres—the largest natural rhododendron garden in the world. Doe River Covered Bridge

Heavy oak planks, hand-forged nails and threaded spikes have helped the Covered Bridge remain beautiful and functional. Built in 1882, it is one of the few remaining covered bridges in Tennessee. The Doe River Covered Bridge is recognized by the Tennessee Historical Commission, National Register of Historic Places and the Historic Engineering Record. Unicoi County Heritage Museum

Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park

The celebrated frontiersman, warrior, and backwoods statesman was born on the banks of the Nolichucky River in 1786. The cabin has been restored and furnished in the period style. The site includes a large picnic and camping area. Crockett was massacred at the Alamo along with other Tennessee Volunteers. Andrew Johnson National Historic Site

Trace the life of Andrew Johnson, an industrious tailor who became the 17th President of the United States. The site includes the tailor shop, 1830’s Johnson House, museum, The Homestead in which Johnson lived from 1851 until his death in 1875, and the National Cemetery where he and other family members are buried. Dickson-Williams Mansion

Few homes have any more rich history than the DicksonWilliams Mansion. Built in 1815 as the “Showplace of East Tennessee” the home entertained guests like Davy Crockett, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and the Marquis de LaFayette. During the Civil War it served as headquarters for both Union and Confederate officers. Confederate General John Hunt Morgan was killed in the garden in 1864. Rogersville Historic District

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Rogersville’s unique original red brick Main Street is known as the largest collection of Federal style architecture in the state. The district includes the State’s oldest Court House, Hale Springs Inn, the Crockett family’s first Tennessee home, and the site where Tennessee’s first newspaper was printed in 1791, along with five Tennessee state historical markers. Tennessee Newspaper and Printing Museum

A quaint 1890 Southern Railway Depot contains the state’s only newspaper and printing museum. The award winning museum contains exhibits depicting the printing industry from its beginning in Tennessee until printing became off-set. Melungeon Heritage

The name Melungeon refers to a people of mixed descent who, according to one theory, are descendants of early Spanish and Portuguese explorers who made settlements in Georgia and the Carolinas prior to the historic Jamestown establishments of 1567 or 1607. Genetic studies give rise to the belief that the Melungeons were originally from northwest Africa who, known as Moors, moved into Spain and Portugal around 710 A.D. Exiled during the Spanish Inquisition, these people may have come to the New World in the 16th Century. Subsequent generations, apparently unaccepted legally or socially by their new country, retreated to the mountains where today some 500 Melungeon descendants still live where their ancestors settled in Northeast Tennessee and extreme Southwest Virginia. Newman’s Ridge is one of the most famous of Melungeon territories. Visit the Vardy Community to learn more about the mystery of the Melungeons. 423-733-2080
