letter from the editor I’m headed into this holiday season feeling a little less pressure to have the perfect family photo for the annual card, and I owe my thanks to Facebook. Yes, cards will still go out in the mail, with a short note and season’s greetings, but the photos and recap of events that I previously tried to fit in have now been shared with my friends and family all year long on my Facebook page. I’ve come to think of this social media site as a way to make my global village a little bit smaller. Though we don’t live near enough to see each other often, we can chat regularly, easily and informally. That’s the idea we had in mind when we opened a Facebook fan page for At Home and started sharing stories and asking questions. In just a few months, we’ve begun to have an ongoing dialogue with more than 3,500 readers, and it’s become one of my favorite parts of the day to read what you have to say. Recently, we asked for your favorite holiday decorating ideas, and you filled our fan page with a myriad of creative suggestions: Cathy Wise Pursell Fresh magnolia leaf garland...hand made by my husband. I love the way it looks, smells and feels like a Southern Christmas! Candace Dixon My favorite is the family room memory tree. I buy an ornament each place we vacation and as we decorate the tree it is a world tour of memories! Laurie Marshall I let my kids buy a new ornament every year. My mom did this, and when my siblings and I moved out, we had instant holiday memories to put on our OWN trees. Holly Wales Meadows I change out my everyday dishes to my Christmas pattern and use it from the Friday after Thanksgiving until January 1. It is a constant reminder of how special the season is in our home. Leslie Porter Homemade ornaments my grandmother made before she passed. My granddaddy gave them to me when we started our family, as a way to continue her love. Janice Greenfield Carter My Christmas village. It is over 25 feet long with operable cars and over 40 buildings, and still adding on! Have already started putting it together this year! Jan Shrader I do one tree every year in antique ornaments. Some from estate sales, some from my childhood in the ‘50s. Brings back memories of life in simpler times and when Christmas was not so commercialized. Faron R Smith We use the same décor but add to it or take away; nothing ever goes in the same place. It’s a new Christmas every year.

A Little Rock designer looks to the woods for a season’s-worth of decorating ideas

WREATHED IN STYLE

Floral designer Phil Cato, owner of About Vase in Little Rock, adds holiday cheer to his home with décor inspired by nature. Here, he began with a vine wreath and used floral wire to attach a variety of elements he collected from the garden: pine cones, blue spruce branches, magnolia leaves, dried blue hydrangea blooms and even the remains of a hornets’ nest. He used moss-covered Styrofoam balls (available at craft stores) and hot-glued balls from sweetgum trees onto their surfaces, and then glued the resulting spheres onto the wreath. Weaving the elements in and around the wreath’s vines helped secure the items and complete the all-natural look. www.athomearkansas.com 19

CENTERED BY NATURE Cato ďŹ lled a birch log basket with layers of blue spruce branches, antlers (often found at ea markets or antique malls) and moss. He topped the basket with dried gourds, which he dressed up with acrylic gold-leaf paint, and tucked in bunches of rose hips to complete the seasonal centerpiece.

BRANCHING OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS For a kid-friendly take on a traditional Christmas tree, Cato designed a version in a vase as a tasty project for the entire family. He used slender birch tree logs as the starting point, drilled holes in them and placed them in a glass vase, securing them with black river rocks. He next topped the rocks with artificial snow (both are available at craft stores) and inserted cuttings (they need to fit tightly or should be adhered with glue) from a blue spruce tree. With the tree form in place, the decorating options are endless—here, Cato glued on candy Dots and added brightly colored sugar cookies suspended from ribbons. Be sure to make extra cookies— snacking while decorating is a must.

A creative Eureka Springs shop owner turns flea market finds into inspired holiday décor PHOTOGRAPHY: NANCY NOLAN/STYLING: MANDY KEENER

By Diane Carroll

“I LOVE FINDING A throw-away and making it into a treasure,” says Kaylene Shepard, who has turned that philosophy into a business at her Eureka Springs store Something Simple, where she gives vintage home furnishings and accessories new life. In order to blend her mix of true antiques and newer flea-market items, Kaylene sticks with a neutral color palette and covers all her goods in shades of white. “I have always been a fan of cream and white because they’re timeless and work in any room,” she explains, “and I use the same palette when I decorate for the holidays.” Working with elements she’s found through years of flea market and antique mall visits, Kaylene creates unique, hand-made ornaments and accessories. Here, her inspired ideas with suggestions for incorporating them into your own home.

Kaylene topped a vintage saltshaker, bottle and bedspring with wire trees she spray painted silver and tied on with vintage ribbon. The end result? Clever place card or photo holders.

www.athomearkansas.com 25

style rediscoveries

Ideal for topping packages, Kaylene’s flowers are made from old zippers and tape measures. She makes several sixinch loops with the zippers and four-inch loops with the tape measures and secures them into a flower shape by sewing or hot gluing them together. She then embellishes them by gluing on whatever vintage finds she has on hand—buttons, trim or even old watch faces.

style rediscoveries

Springs from a flea-market-find daybed were the starting point for Kaylene’s corkscrew ornaments. She cut out the springs and then dressed them up with vintage ribbon and antique treasures including chandelier crystals and glitter snowflakes. Kaylene cut a well-shaped tree branch and sprayed it with several coats of white paint. She had a wooden cube cut to serve as a stand, had a large hole drilled into the top, cemented the branch inside the hole, added pea gravel to fill the remaining open area, and then spray painted the stand and rocks white. She trims the resulting tree with both handmade and vintage ornaments.

The holidays sparkle in this Chenal Valley home, where festive dĂŠcor greets family and friends Text: Sharon Mosley Photography: Nancy Nolan

Debi Davis of D & D Design outfitted Paul Guess’ Little Rock home with textural neutrals for a masculine look; Silks A Bloom complemented the rich tones with golden holiday décor. FACING PAGE: An elegant chandelier, lit only by candles, adds Old World charm to the dining room.

WHEN DECEMBER ROLLS AROUND for Little Rock resident Paul Guess, he is ready to spend time with his friends and family in a special place – his home in Chenal Valley. “Christmas is such a fun time of the year, not only because of the true meaning, but also because I enjoy celebrating with my colleagues and family,” says the Des Arc native, a senior director of sales for a major pharmaceutical company. Paul hosts a party every year for all of his colleagues from the Southern region, and in preparation for the event, his house gets a full holiday makeover. “Some might say that the Christmas decor in my home is a little over the top,” he explains, “but it’s not to me.” Paul credits his parents, Ann and Donald Guess, who live in Des Arc, for always making the holidays special for his family. “I guess I get it from my mother who has at least two Christmas trees in her home,” Paul says. “It is just tradition to me.” After having lived in cities across the U.S., Paul moved to Little Rock in 2007. He was thrilled when he found the 3,800-square-foot home in Chenal Valley. “The architecture and design of this house fit me perfectly because I regularly entertain,” Paul says. “The size of the home suits me because it’s not too big for a single professional.” Paul was also delighted when he found Little Rock interior designer Debi Davis, and he offered her a blank canvas upon which to decorate his new home. “I thought I had a style,” says Paul, who loves an eclectic mix of European antiques and furnishings with a classic French flair, “but Debi really helped me refine the look that flows throughout my home.” Davis echoes Paul’s sentiments. “He has 37

a very sophisticated Old World style,” says the designer. “And we blended in a touch of contemporary design for a classic, masculine look.” Davis says she had the concept of “dressy casual” in mind for Paul’s house, outfitting the rooms in shades of easy-care chocolate brown mixed with crisp ivory accents for a touch of formality. “It’s a comfortable combination,” adds Davis, “since it’s great for everyday living and chic enough for entertaining.” Adding unique touches helped personalize the new house as well, including a custom dining room table where Paul’s family crest is painted in the center, along with one-of-a-kind antiques and accessories. This custom approach carried over to the holiday décor as well, where the design team at Silks A Bloom dressed up the house for Paul’s annual party. “We were so excited to work with Paul on his home,” says Tammy Copeland, who along with daughters Lindsey Copeland and Brittany Vick and partner Dale Aldridge, transformed Paul’s home into an elegant showplace. “Christmas is the one time of year that you don’t have to match your holiday decorating to your interior décor,” Vick says. “Whether you choose to have it blend in, or make a big statement, you can’t go wrong.” Here, the team added sparkle and shine with golden hues to accent the rich, neutral interiors. “Paul’s home ended up with a great mix of the traditional feel of Christmas and of glitz and glamour,” says Aldridge. “Those two styles worked together beautifully here.” 38

Garlands and fresh flowers add fragrance and dress up the house for the holidays, including Paul’s piano room and the kitchen with an adjacent breakfast room, where an antique tapestry hangs over a glass and metal table. FACING PAGE: In the living room, Paul’s Oriental screen is a focal point behind a pair of club chairs covered in thick mocha brown silk. An Empire-style side table and a gilded coffee table complete the grouping.

A Fayetteville family with three young children fills their new home with memory-making holiday décor Text: Diane Carroll Photography: Brian Meredith

“WE THINK OF OUR HOUSE as traditional but youthful,” says Jamie Banks of the new residence she and her husband, Michael, built in Fayetteville’s Clear Creek neighborhood. Creating a comfortable, relaxing home for their family, which includes five-year-old Olivia, four-year-old Mary Helen and one-year-old David, was a priority for the couple, a goal that’s reflected in the design of their house and carries over to their holiday traditions. Architects Bret and Stacey Park devised an open floor plan for the family home, where informal living, dining and kitchen spaces flow together easily. “Because of that, we use every room in the house, every day,” says Jamie. “There are no off-limit formal areas or unused spaces.” Building on that concept, interior designer Lisa Claybrook, ASID, worked with the family to choose paint colors, furnishings and fabrics that would add to the home’s warm and welcoming style. “In the living spaces, we used earthy colors that blend from room to room,” says Claybrook. “And we chose durable, kid-friendly materials to ensure that the furnishings would look good but be easy to clean.” Last year, the home was included in the Junior League of Northwest Arkansas Winter Dreams Home Tour, and Jamie opted to play up the house’s earth-tone look with allnatural decorations, including magnolia leaf wreaths and garlands created by the design team at Flora. Holiday décor specialist Jennifer Apolskis collaborated with Jamie on the rest of the seasonal elements, including a festive live tree trimmed with orange, blue, gold and red ornaments to complement the color palette of the living room. In the adjacent kitchen, a room that Jamie considers the heart of the holiday season, the family creates and displays gingerbread houses each year, a tradition that Jamie says both

she and Michael enjoyed as children. For the home tour, the family’s efforts became part of a much larger gingerbread house display involving such elaborate constructions as a recreation of Old Main from the University of Arkansas campus and a building named “Two Girls and a Boy Toyshop” in honor of the children, all created by Rick’s Bakery. The memory-building decorations also extended to the children’s bedrooms, where small white Christmas trees decorated to match each child’s room were set up on their bedside tables. “They became the kids’ nightlights, because they loved the glow so much they didn’t want to turn them off when they went to bed,” says Jamie. The holiday magic continued into the children’s playroom, where Apolskis added a full-size tree outfitted with colorful, kid-friendly ornaments, the final touch in a house full of family-oriented holiday décor. “We designed this house to be a place where our family memories are made,” says Jamie, “and the holidays are a big part of that.”

A Searcy family decks the halls of their new rustic home with all-natural air Text: Sharon Mosley Photography: Nancy Nolan Styling: Mandy Keener

44

For a natural look in Mandy and Rees Lloyd’s Searcy dining room, interior designer Beth Davis surrounded a reindeer statue with greenery, poinsettias, burlap, cardinals and nests. A full smock silk lampshade on a wood candlestick lamp from The Shade Above blends with more greenery, cranberries and poinsettias. FACING PAGE: A tin pail complements a rustic lantern on the covered back deck.

DURING THE YEARS SPENT BUILDING their dream home, holiday decorating had been a challenge for Searcy residents Mandy and Rees Lloyd. With their new Craftsman-style home completed last year, they were eager to renew their holiday plans—and when they were asked to participate in the Associated Women for Harding’s Annual Holiday Tour of Homes, they decided it was an ideal time to start new traditions. Mandy turned to her long-time friend Beth Davis, a Searcy-based interior designer who helped the Lloyd family with the construction and design of their new home, for holiday décor ideas. The Lloyds had based their home’s design on their desire for a family-friendly, warm and welcoming space, and Davis carried these ideals over to their holiday plans, focusing on Mandy’s natural style of decorating in her Craftsman home. 45

“I love being outside and am drawn to woodsy or natural items,” says Mandy, who uses the terms “lodge,” “rustic” and “lived-in” to describe the Searcy home she and Rees share with their two teenage children. “We have a vaulted family room that looks out onto a vaulted deck. You can’t help but see outside when you are inside.” For the holiday tour at the Lloyds’ home, Beth wove in natural elements using an abundance of fresh greenery, berries, pinecones and branches. The entire house was incorporated into the design, including the vaulted deck. Since the Lloyds use a variety of brown and blue tones in the interior of their home, Davis suggested Mandy add more color for some extra holiday punch. Mandy was more than happy to bring in the vibrant reds that have traditionally symbolized holiday color schemes. “Beth’s look and ideas were very refreshing to some of my old looks,” Mandy admits. “She was tactful and honest when she advised me to invest in areas that would add the most color or biggest pop. Even though the house was new, many of my personal items were old and worn out. Beth was not only able to work with my look, but also to incorporate a fresh, natural, warm feel into the home.” And the Lloyds plan on using Davis’ holiday decorating ideas for a long time to come. “Because of how beautiful the fresh greenery looked and smelled, I am certain we will be headed back into the woods for accessories from Mother Earth each year,” Mandy says.

A Little Rock designer draws on nature and tradition to create a welcoming retreat on the outskirts of town Text: Paulette Pearson Photography: Nancy Nolan

Little Rock designer Chip Jones decorated the banister in his Roland home with three layers of faux garland interspersed with twigs of live pine. Other natural elements include an arrangement of nandina berries and red roses. FACING PAGE: A wreath and garland accented with bright red apples and plaid ribbon welcome family and guests. www.athomearkansas.com 49

DESIRING A TRADITIONAL HOUSE with plenty of land for gardens and landscaping, Chip Jones and Scott Lile sold their zero-lot home in Memphis, purchased a five-acre property in a quiet Roland neighborhood and built a Federal-style home filled with comfortable furnishings. Because Scott is a native of nearby Little Rock, Chip says the move was a long time coming. “The problem was that we were on the go all the time,” he remembers. “But we finally moved to the country to slow down and enjoy life.” In addition to gardening, Chip has since discovered other ways to relax and enjoy life as a landowner. A floral and interior designer by trade, he believes that the key to a beautiful holiday home is using fresh elements, so during the winter months he takes long walks in search of foliage to incorporate into his décor. To complement the traditional style of his home, he looks for classic greenery such as pine and cedar and seeks fresh berries that 50

Jones layered garlands on the living room mantle, highlighting a treasured heirloom portrait. FACING PAGE, CLOCKWISE: The Federal-style home lends itself to traditional dÊcor, such as wreaths hanging from ribbon on each of its windows. will continue his holiday colors of classic red and green. This year he also added the occasional blue accent to keep things interesting. “It’s a very popular color right now,” he says. Chip begins in the home’s vaulted great room with a live 12-foot fir tree. He incorporates pops of color with a blue ribbon tree topper and contrasts his classic ornaments with white lights. While many of his ornaments are vintage treasures, he doesn’t adhere to rules when collecting them or deciding where to place them on the tree, and he would gladly purchase an ornament at a discount store if it caught his eye. “Make it fun and choose what you like, whether it’s expensive or not,” says Chip. Natural elements extend to the entryway and more formal living room in the form of handcrafted garlands. Heavy layers of faux garland interspersed with twigs of live pine line the staircase banister in the entry. A similar technique appears on the fireplace mantle in the living room, where Chip weaves in white lights to highlight a cherished heirloom oil painting on the wall above the fireplace, adding to the traditional feel of the space. “It’s a portrait of Scott’s great-great grandmother, who lived in Hope, Arkansas, during the mid-1800s,” Chip explains. “It was the inspiration for the room when we built the house.” Not to forget the exterior, Chip creates a welcoming sight for visiting friends and family by wrapping rustic-looking garland around the white columns and hanging wreaths over each of the windows. “I enjoy decorating because it is a season of pure joy, a time to come together with friends and family, many of whom you may only see this time of the year,” he explains. For him and Scott, the holidays are also a reminder of the reason that they decided to purchase land and build their house in the first place. “At the end of the day, we love coming home,” he says. 52

LEFT TO RIGHT: In the vaulted great room, a collection of Christopher Radko ornaments outfits the 12-foot fir tree, topped with a blue ribbon. More berries, roses and pine twigs wait to be arranged. Garland on the great room mantle gets a dose of blue accents. Jones likes to entertain with Williams-Sonoma china as well as candlesticks and table trees from Tipton Hurst.

SOUTH FOR THE WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY: LAURA LARUE/NANCY NOLAN/COURTESY EL DORADO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

This holiday, bring along our itinerary for a family weekend in the historic small town of El Dorado

EL DORADO WAS ONE OF JUST FIVE TOWNS across the country to receive a coveted Great American Main Street award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation this year, prompting us to stop by and see what the buzz is all about. What we found is that friendly people and a delightfully slow pace make this southArkansas gem ideal for a family weekend getaway, especially during the hectic holidays. Visit www.GoElDorado. com for more information about holiday celebrations, including Cookies with Santa and the Toys for Tots Bike Run, both on December 5. FRIDAY EVENING Begin the weekend with a family dinner and movie date. The Laredo Grill (200 E.
