Our first staff meeting to plan an issue of Weddings in Arkansas is much like the day after a couple becomes engaged. The question of where to begin looms before us, and we search for inspiration. What have we seen recently that’s captured our attention, what feels current without being too trendy and what’s timely for a bride-to-be to know? In planning this issue, the fresh colors showing up in fashion and design were top of mind for our team—the petal pinks, brilliant blues, invigorating oranges, luscious lavenders and garden greens appearing on the runaway, in elegant rooms and in chic shops across the country. These oh-so-spring and summery colors became our launching pad, and art director Mandy Keener and special projects coordinator Lauren trother took the color wheel and ran with it, devising features showing how to incorporate these shades into all your wedding day details. One thing we learned along the way? hese shades are sheer fun. Bring them into your big day and guests are bound to be smiling as broadly as the bride and groom. njoy!

nterview by Julie Wax

What’s the story behind the two of you—how did you meet? We met in September of 2007, at an art show in Fayetteville where Austin was showcasing his work. I had already accepted a position with Neiman Marcus in Dallas, so our first year of dating was spent five hours apart, and then I moved back to Northwest Arkansas. Austin proposed on September 24, 2009, in Central Park during a trip to New York. He claimed he wanted to take my photograph with the skyline, but instead pulled out an engagement ring. Your parents’ home was the setting for your wedding. Did this make you feel more relaxed on the big day, and did it make for easier planning? It definitely made us feel more comfortable, and it was nice that we weren’t creatively restricted with rules and regulations, since Austin, who studied architecture and is currently an architectural intern, ended up constructing the ceremony space. We held the ceremony on 20 acres of family land, tucked away in Springdale, which serves as my step-dad’s flower farm, Woodbine Mead. We must talk fashion because your Oscar de la Renta gown was so incredibly chic. Describe it in detail and your quest to find it. I wore a couture Oscar de la Renta white strapless guipure lace gown. We found it at Neiman Marcus, and it was the first gown I tried on that day. I fell in love with the lace texture, the detachable tulle train and the amazing silhouette. Peach and chartreuse were your colors, and it seems you carried the palette over to the bridesmaid dresses? (P.S. Did you all wear heels in the grass?) The bridesmaids wore above-the-knee chartreuse strapless dresses from J. Crew with gold heels and vintage earrings from Mae’s Emporium. Yes, we all wore heels in the grass, and I’m sure my maids were thrilled with me! All of the signs with both of your initials were cute as a button. Thanks! This concept was drawn from stylemepretty.com. We used our logo, designed by Amy Hannon of Sincerely Yours Paper, on our save-the-date valentines and wanted to continue it throughout the big day. A vendor I found on Etsy created the signs. What were the red drinks with striped straws—they were so pretty! Champagne slushies, which were topped with festive striped straws and served upon exiting the ceremony. After the big day ended, where did you find yourself the following day—the beach, the mountains? We’re preparing to daydream now. We honeymooned throughout Italy for two breathtaking weeks! The Italian Riviera, Tuscany and Florence. 26 spring/summer weddings 2011

Was your dress love at first sight, or did it take you several tries to find the one you had in mind? It was the last dress I tried on. I had already dressed when my mother brought me one more. I knew as soon as I put it on that it was “the one.” There was something about the way it fit that felt right. he flo ers—so many hydrangeas— ere a solutely eautiful. s there a reason you chose them? I’ve always loved peonies and hydrangeas. My mother and my grandmothers grow them, and they’ve always represented a Southern elegance that we wanted to bring to the wedding. he cake and monogrammed “ ” cookies look so yummy. id you have a chance to en oy, or ere you too usy at the reception? Between cutting the cake and dancing with my new hubby, it did get busy. I didn’t eat a single cookie at the wedding. However, some friends snuck a few into our picnic basket for later, along with champagne, fried catfish, crawfish and grits, and shrimp remoulade. fter it as all said and done, did you kick off your shoes and et set a ay? Yes, we did. We flew to Cozumel and had a fabulous week of sun and fun!

etting engaged is one of the most memora le moments in a girl’s life. We ant the details! I had planned to spend the weekend with my sister and couldn’t figure out why Bryan was so upset. I had no idea he was planning to propose. When I came home, he was waiting and later announced he needed to make a phone call. Not knowing this was a ploy to get to his pocket, I nagged him about talking to someone besides me when we’d just been apart for days. When I turned my head, he was down on one knee. Needless to say, my complaining stopped. he setting for your edding, your parents’ home, as gorgeous. Was this ho you had envisioned it since you ere a little girl? I would be fibbing if I said I dreamed this when I was a little girl, but my home has always been one of my favorite places. My mother does a beautiful job with her home and gardens, so it was easy to transform it into a wedding venue. our names have such a ring to them—Brady and Bryan! ny cute stories or ays you incorporated them into the edding? We thought it would be fun to incorporate them into our favors, using our names on drink holders and matchboxes. et’s talk fashion—all of the soft, spring hues are so very pretty. What made you choose this color palette? I wanted everything to blend with the natural beauty of the existing backdrop. My favorite flowers have always been in shades of white, ivory and green, and using that palette complemented the woodland theme.

ell us the details about your romance— as it love at first sight? We were friends for three years before dating, and met in Russellville during college. Afterwards, I moved to Fort Smith and he moved to Little Rock. We ran into each other one night, kept in touch and the rest is history. ometimes our beaus can really go all out hen proposing. id atrick do something special for you? He took me snow skiing in Colorado. We walked around the resort, huddled up next to one of the fire pits, and it started snowing. From the moment I walked inside, I knew it was where I wanted the reception. The atmosphere is amazing and unique, and I thought it would be a great experience for out-of-town guests. We served pork tenderloin with dips, cheeses and veggies as well as sliders with blueberry barbecue sauce and potato strings. We’re obsessed ith the red heels in your bridal portrait. id you ear them during the ceremony? I wore them the entire time. Everyone thought I was crazy for choosing red, but if you ask anyone in my family, they’ll tell you I’ve been stomping around in red high heels since I was a little girl. ll of the chic details have us s ooning. o did you come up ith the hair accessories? I wanted to incorporate fun, modern pieces. I wore a veil for the ceremony, and a flower for the reception. Our hair accessories were designed to complement the sash I wore around my waist. It was a subtle way to tie together the girls’ looks. he bridesmaids’ outfits seem as though they could ork for everyday. Yes. When I saw the dress, I wanted to buy one for myself. The design is flattering, sweet and simple. The girls loved that they were comfortable and had hidden pockets for lip gloss and tissues. uch lovely s eets ith the monogrammed “ ”. We must kno all of the details on the flavors. Patrick loves chocolate cupcakes so we thought that would be a fun alternative to a groom’s cake. o long have you kno n each other and here did you meet? We en oy a good love story! In 2005, while waiting in line for a concert, I overheard Dan say he received his acceptance to Villanova Law School. I said that I attended Villanova, and he asked for my number. He started there the next fall, and called me for a date, but I declined. Having similar musical tastes, we kept meeting at concerts, which turned into pseudo-dates, and eventually we dated exclusively. He proposed in 2008 in Philadelphia, his hometown, at the Water Works restaurant overlooking Boathouse Row. any girls dream up their eddings long before they’re ever engaged. our edding took place at your parents’ home—is this something you’ve al ays anted? We started planning a wedding in New Orleans and booked the location, caterer and florist. But when planning became complicated, we switched to my family’s backyard in Lake Village, which was the best decision. It felt more like an impromptu wedding at a party than an unfamiliar performance. We had our dream wedding, which wasn’t about the flowers, food and flair. our parents’ store, aul ichael ompany in ake illage, is kno n for its onderful home decor. Were you able to incorporate some of the items into your edding? The flower containers came from there, and we used solid wood, hand-carved decorative crowns for the crowning ceremony. For the cake cutting, we used a cathedral mirror to frame the cakes. We heard the cakes have a family connection as well. My Aunt Leah, who lives in New Orleans, is a baker and my Aunt Ann, who lives next door to her, is an artist. Aunt Leah made my cake, complete with sugar flowers. She also made Dan’s cake, and Aunt Ann topped it with a sugar sculpture of Dan and me atop a mini-cake on the scales of justice. We’re crushing over the color palette of soft blues, pinks and yellows. Was it difficult to devise a theme? Having florists and interior designers at the Paul Michael Company, I relied on their expertise. I loved the idea of a mixed antique china place setting. My mother and I bought and collected antique china for two years. From the plate collection came the color palette and vintage garden theme. The waterfront setting was beautiful. Did you have a back-up plan, in case the weather didn’t cooperate? We never had a back-up plan! The moment we stepped outside, we were hit with gusts of wind. Sans a few broken wine glasses, blown fabric and flowers, the wind didn’t cause many distractions. When I stepped out to walk down the aisle, the wind subsided and we had a beautiful day.

ell us ho it all egan. We met through mutual friends and dated for over a year. We started dating in June of 2008, and I fell in love with Jake and his daughter, Addison. I knew that I couldn’t wait for us to be a family. He proposed in August of 2009 at the same place where we had our first date, while taking a walk on a pathway covered by trees. It was perfect and romantic. He dropped on one knee and said, “Will you marry me?” All I could say was “yes,” and then I started crying because I was so happy and nervous. he event took place at he istoric ogers ouse— hat a great venue. o did you find out a out it, and hy did you choose it? My best friend held her reception there, and it was beautiful. I wanted our wedding to have a very romantic feeling, so there were lanterns on the tables, mixed with unique arrangements of pale yellow and white flowers. I wanted it to be a bit eclectic, and didn’t want big, tall flower arrangements or the same arrangement on every table. I also wanted chandeliers and birdcages since lovebirds were part of the theme. The wedding was at twilight so that the candles and the lanterns would show. our dress as too pretty—strapless is definitely edding chic. id you have this style in mind hen you egan looking at dresses? At first, I didn’t want strapless, but wanted a capped sleeve dress with a vintage feel. Then I fell in love with the first dress I tried, and it happened to be strapless. I thought I wanted a fun-colored shoe, but decided to stay with the same color as my dress to keep it classic. he yello and gray color palette is one of our favorites for spring. The bridesmaids wore gray, and the flower girls wore yellow. I liked these colors because they were soft, and it was somewhat easy to find everything in this palette. The flower girls were my two nieces and my stepdaughter, Addison. ven the cakes are classic chic ith simple icing and gorgeous flo ers. What ere the flavors, and did you save any for your first edding anniversary? My cake was classic vanilla with buttercream icing. The groom’s cake was buttercream with cream cheese icing. And, yes, we did save some for our first anniversary! o you have any special memories to share from the day —there are al ays so many... Everything was outdoors, but thankfully, there was sunshine and no rain. The day was full of happy memories with friends and family. I was just so happy to marry Jake that day!

If you’re willing to share, we would love to know all about the proposal. It was a casual Friday night dinner at Vino’s in Little Rock. When we headed back to the car, he turned toward me with a ring and proposed. It was November 13—Friday the 13th! Don’t believe in superstition, though, because our wedding was perfect. The setting of your wedding, a fruit orchard, is SO UNIQUE. I grew up in the country and always wanted to get married in a pasture. We looked at several outdoor venues, but I couldn’t find anything similar to what I had envisioned. A friend had attended a wedding in this orchard, so he suggested it and it was just the kind of place I had in mind. The peaches looked delicious enough to eat! Did you use them in your menu, or were they merely for decorating? The peaches were a big hit. We incorporated burlap, baskets and peaches throughout the decor. We didn’t use any peaches in our menu, but they were great favors. Most brides send out the standard invitation, but you sent postcards. What a great idea! We wanted to make our wedding casual, and standard invitations can be formal and expensive. We included two postcards with our engagement photos on both the invitation and RSVP card. Casual and homemade seem to be a common theme, as well as a vintage look. Tell us more about your inspiration for that style. To me, items are so much more special when they’re handmade. Jamey and his father made an arbor for the ceremony, using scrap wood from the orchard. Most of my ideas came from greenweddingshoes.com, and I did a lot of antique shopping for vintage finds, including the windows and shutters we worked into the decor. My mother-in-law made the burlap table runners. Several items came from Etsy, the online craft site. I purchased my decorated hair comb from the site. And I saw a guestbook tree, a framed piece of art with guests’ thumbprints on it, on a wedding blog, and knew I had to incorporate that idea into our reception. The tree is on our wall at home and reminds us of the people involved in our special day. Did you work other items with sentimental meaning into the wedding? Our wedding bands. My grandmother willed her anniversary ring to me. There were three layers of diamonds, so Stanley Jewelers took apart the sides and I used the middle row. Jamey’s ring was melded from both his father and grandfather’s rings. Of course we love fashion, so you must spill on the wedding dress details. It was a Watters & Watters ivory strapless dress with silk taffeta and front pleats at the neckline, trumpet skirt with cutout flowers and chapel train. It was very lightweight without extra layers. I was so glad, because the day was much hotter than I had thought it would be.
