WELCOME

Easy Living With vacation homes as the focus of this month’s issue, I’ve started thinking about my own summertime plans, which have yet to be determined. For a little inspiration, I turned to some Atlanta tastemakers to see what they’ll be up to this year. “After six weeks of very unusual snow in Cashiers last winter, which caused a multitude of plants to bid us farewell, we will be working atop Big Sheep Mountain getting things back into shape.” —Winton Noah, co-owner, Ainsworth-Noah & Associates “Summer and vacation are now year-round for me. In April, my husband and I moved into our new lakefront home, just south of Atlanta. Boating and fishing and sticking my toes in the water will take me to that place of peace, right in my own back yard. Every day will feel like a vacation day. And of course, summer also means hosting the televised fireworks program at Lenox Square on the Fourth of July.” —Monica Pearson, anchor, WSB-TV “I look forward to spending as much time as possible riding my new horse, which I hope to be getting in the next couple of months. No exotic summer trips—just time in Cherokee County riding and spending lazy summer days with my ‘horse family’ Sandy and Allen on their beautiful horse farm!” —Nancy Solomon, owner, Solomon Projects “I will be spending some quiet vacation time—and escaping the Atlanta heat—in the Hudson River Valley. A little over an hour outside New York City, I will most certainly make a stop at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to finalize plans for the High’s next big exhibition, ‘Picasso to Warhol: Twelve Modern Masters,’ opening in October.” —Michael E. Shapiro, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, High Museum of Art I’d love to know your plans, as well. Stay in touch with us this summer at facebook.com/atlantahomesmag. Vivre ONE OF ATLANTA’S LANDMARK HIGH-RISE RESIDENCES IS THE EMBODIMENT OF THE GOOD LIFE, COMPLIMENTS OF DESIGNER JOHN OETGEN

WRITTEN BY HEATHER J. PAPER PHOTOGRAPHED BY ERICA GEORGE DINES PRODUCED BY CLINTON SMITH

For this home at The Mansion on Peachtree, designer John Oetgen created an elegant atmosphere, with a touch of his trademark “whimsy” thrown in. opposite Against the otherwise neutral scheme, a single red silk pillow grabs your attention. “I think there’s nothing better than a black suit with a big, ol’ brooch on it,” Oetgen explains. “You can change that brooch every day; it can be rubies and diamonds one day, sapphires and emeralds the next! That’s all a pillow is. It’s a brooch for the room.”

“I’ve always been a fan of Atlanta designer John Oetgen. Somehow, he seems to know exactly how to strike the right balance when mixing the old and the new. It’s really a skill to be able to make it all seem so natural and so not forced, and John has obviously perfected this skill.” —Jennifer Boles, ThePeakOfChic.com From the post, “Decorating and Drinks,” March 17, 2010

Naomi von Habersham AROUND TOWN WITH

Looks like much of Atlanta is gearing up for next month’s mass exodus to vacation homes hither and yon. Of course, you have the usual suspects: Highlands, Cashiers, Sea Island and Lake Rabun. But have you heard that Thomasville is the new Aiken and Clayton is the new Tiger? Are you with me? Good, because the new hot spots are changing so fast that it’s making old Naomi’s head spin. I can’t even discern my Catoosa from Chattooga anymore. I’ve even heard a rumor that a certain well-known New York designer has bought a house in a small South Georgia town. Let’s just hope for the sake of his Yankee constitution that it’s air-conditioned. Which reminds me, did you know that Georgia has a vanity license plate for the Conditioned Air Association of Georgia? Well, they do. When I renew my tags, I’m going to get a Historic Preservation plate. After all, I’m old, and thanks to a nip here and a tuck there, I’m well preserved, too. There’s something about warm weather that makes me seek sultry destinations full of hot-blooded men. That used to mean the Club Med in Cancun, but today it’s more like my neighbor’s pool in Ansley. You should check out the biceps on some of his friends! Of course, it’s not all about fun in the sun. Some of our city’s more cultured cosmopolites will cross the pond this month as part of the Institute of Classical Architecture’s tour of the English country houses of Sir Edwin Lutyens. And speaking of England, last month’s wedding of William and Kate brought tears to my eyes. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry over those cockamamie hats worn by some of the guests. And, finally, can we just say that Tony seems to be everywhere this month? There’s A Tony Evening on May 7, a gala to benefit the Alliance Theatre. Guess who’s the chair of the Décor Committee? That’s right, A Legendary Event’s Tony Conway. And the following week is the annual Beastly Feast at Zoo Atlanta with another Tony—Tony Brewer—designing the event. With all of that Tony talent, I can’t think of two, um, tonier events!

WHAT CAN PATRONS EXPECT? LOCALLY SOURCED AND PREPARED FOOD, A COOL BUT RELAXED ENVIRONMENT, A HUMBLE YET KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF, FUN MUSIC AND A CHARMING SECONDARY ELEMENT, LIKE THE BACK YARD, WHICH IS A HIDDEN SPACE OFF THE PATH FROM THE BRICKSTORE PUB AND LEON’S FULL SERVICE. IT’LL BE BEAUTIFULLY LANDSCAPED AND HOLD PLENTY OF OUTDOOR SEATING, A SHUFFLEBOARD COURT AND A MASSIVE PECAN TREE.

Following the success of his Southern farmstead-inspired eatery, JCT Kitchen, acclaimed chef Ford Fry is partnering with chef Drew Belline to showcase the pair’s combined passion for locally sourced ingredients and wood-fired cuisine at their new neighborhood Italian restaurant, No. 246, opening later this month. Chef Fry gives us the inside dish on this joint venture.

WILL THE CUISINE HAVE A SOUTHERN SPIN? DREW’S STYLE IS VERY NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, WHICH NATURALLY LEANS ITALIAN, YET SOURCED LOCALLY. SO I WOULDN’T SAY THERE WILL BE A SOUTHERN SPIN, JUST A PASSION FOR SOURCING FROM THE SOUTH. WHY DECATUR? DECATUR IS AWESOME. IT’S TRULY THE “BERKELEY” OF THE SOUTH. THE PEOPLE ARE GREAT AND THE AREA IS DYING FOR ITALIAN-INSPIRED FOOD!

WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR ATLANTANS DECIDING WHERE TO EAT? GO LOCAL! EAT AT LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED RESTAURANTS THAT SOURCE LOCALLY. AND IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE TO GO, ASK A CHEF! WHAT UNEXPECTED INGREDIENTS DO YOU LOVE TO USE? I LOVE USING MEAT STOCKS (REDUCTIONS) AND BROWNED BUTTER IN VINAIGRETTES. THEY ADD ANOTHER LEVEL OF PUNCH TO THE FOOD. WHAT’S NEXT THIS SEASON? I’LL BE HOSTING THE THIRD ANNUAL JCT KITCHEN ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATO FESTIVAL. THIRTY OF THE BEST LOCAL CHEFS, TEN OF THE BEST LOCAL MIXOLOGISTS AND ALL OF OUR AMAZING LOCAL FARMS WILL BE PARTICIPATING THIS YEAR. BELIEVE ME, IT TAKES ALL OF OUR LOCAL FARMS TO SUPPLY THE AMOUNT OF TOMATOES NEEDED TO PULL OFF THIS FESTIVAL! NO246.COM

Seminar Series Host, Carolyn O’Neil, MS RD LD

Scott Serpas, Executive Chef/Owner, Serpas True Food

Bennett Hollberg, Executive Chef Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse

Noted nutrition expert and television personality CAROLYN O'NEIL shares her refreshing food philosophy—“The More You Know, The More You Can Eat!” She is a registered dietitian and awardwinning author and journalist who reported on food and health at CNN for nearly 20 years. Carolyn is the co-author of The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous! (Simon & Schuster, Atria Books)—Winner “Best Health and Nutrition Book” at the World Food Media awards. Carolyn is an AOL Diet & Fitness Coach with online weight control workshops, writes a weekly column for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Healthy Eating Out” and appears on the Food Network as “The Lady of the Refrigerator” on Alton Brown’s Food Network show “Good Eats.” Carolyn’s CNN TV reporting on food, nutrition and cuisine earned numerous awards, including three James Beard Foundation Awards—she was the first dietitian to be inducted into the James Beard Who’s Who in Food and Beverage. dishdivas.com

South Louisiana native and executive chef Scott Serpas has a knack for carving out a style all his own, and his culinary charisma has culled attention from adoring diners and critics alike. From the prestigious James Beard Foundation to Gourmet, GQ and Food & Wine, this chef has garnered attention for his honest approach to Southern food with Louisiana flair. At his first restaurant venture, Serpas True Food, located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, Serpas is known for its “true food” approach to cuisine with an edge. Scott caught the restaurant bug when he worked at restaurants in New Orleans. He eventually pursued a career in culinary arts by attending Delgado’s Culinary Institute in New Orleans. After graduating, he worked under executive chef Kevin Rathbun at the popular Baby Routh’s in Dallas, which introduced him to Southwestern cooking techniques and flavors. Serpas has also worked in the kitchen at Nava, Sia’s in Alpharetta and as executive chef at Atlanta’s popular TWO Urban Licks, where he created and executed a menu of wood-fired meats, fish and barbecue in a high-energy environment. serpasrestaurant.com

Atlanta native Bennett Hollberg brings over 10 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge to the kitchen of Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, located in Phipps Plaza. Hollberg began his culinary training at The Art Institute of Seattle, where he graduated with an associate’s degree in Applied Arts in 2000. Hollberg then went on to work in some of Seattle’s finest restaurants including Campagne and The Hunt Club, inside the Sorrento Hotel. In 2002, he moved home to Atlanta and took a position at The Dining Room at The Ritz-Carlton in Buckhead. A year later, Hollberg was promoted to chef de partie and soon became the restaurant’s sous chef. In 2006, he began working as the chef de cuisine for The Atlanta Grill located inside the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Atlanta. During his time there, Atlanta Grill was named “Best Restaurant Downtown” by Zagat for 2008-2009 and Hollberg’s cuisine was recognized for excellence by both local and regional publications. He was also named one of Atlanta Magazine’s “Rising Star Chefs” in 2008. www.davios.com

MARMI... NATURE’S ART

Playing off of nature’s incredible aesthetic, the technique of book matching is a growing trend among designers for both classic and contemporary residential design. The technique of book matching with natural stone is a reflection of stone veining patterns across a joint so that adjacent panels appear as mirror images. As displayed here in Calacatta Viola Marble (left) and Honey Onyx (right), this technique works well as focal points such as backsplashes, wall art, grand entrances and staircases. DESIGNER JIMMY STANTON RENDERS A WESTSIDE PIED-À-TERRE WONDROUS, WHILE MAINTAINING A HUMBLE ESCAPE IN THE GEORGIA COUNTRYSIDE

Jimmy Stanton’s country and city dwellings are more alike than one might expect for homes with such disparate purposes. Namely, both are outfitted entirely in neutrals— mostly rich, warm grays and khakis—shades that Stanton describes as comfortable colors. “I like all neutrals with pops of color,” he explains. “It’s modern, but it still has that really relaxed feel.” Still, each home has its unique grace notes. Where his Madison, Georgia, house leans soft and traditional, his condo at Westside Provisions is much more graphic and modern, with wellplaced punches of bright color. For the living room mantel in Madison, opposite, Stanton selected a circa-1880 oil portrait— coincidentally, from the same era as the home’s first addition. In Atlanta, a Helen Durant painting over the roomy leather club sofa, part of the artist’s new wolf series, adds whimsy to the living space.

63

The Madison house caught fire in the late ’60s and the back of it burned, causing the wood to petrify and, counter-intuitively, rendering it an even stronger structure than before. Stanton’s renovations to the exterior included the addition of a tin roof, as well as an old-style white picket fence surrounding the property. In true small town form, every exterior change made to a home in Madison—no matter how inconspicuous—must go through the approval of the local historical society.

In the Atlanta home, colorful pillows and art add pop, while an accessible terrace leads the way to amazing city views, especially at night. In Madison, a fully stocked bar, inspired by that of an old ship and built from reclaimed wood, is prime for entertaining—or just wiling away a lazy spring evening. Apothecary bottles line the mantels and ample references to nature, such as a vintage bird study chart, abound. opposite In Madison, a spacious hallway connects the home’s main rooms. 64

left Stanton warmed up a bare entry wall in his Westside condominium by installing a free-standing fireplace, sourced from Direct Furniture in Atlanta. The equine photography is by artist Ray Hartl, represented at Stanton’s shop. right The designer keeps hundreds of magazines stowed in an old trunk in Madison, but back in Atlanta, most of his books have found a permanent home thanks to roomy shelving in the living room. “We looked at a larger unit, considering all my books—because I have to have them—but they ended up fitting perfectly here,” he says.

In a city where commutes can stretch into hours and schedules are appointed to the minute, it’s easy to get lost in the flurry of daily life. But among the here, there and everywhere, for many, remains a constant craving: the clean, quiet, soul-replenishing respite of a small town’s charms. Jimmy Stanton is one such man constantly on the move, managing his shop, design clients and frequent showhouses with remarkable finesse. Those familiar with the designer’s enormously successful Westside boutique, Stanton Home Furnishings, recognize his knack for re-imagining cast-off objects while curating an inventory that comprises the best of the old and new. So it may come as no surprise that the country house he and Patrick Greco share in Madison, Georgia, was just as much a labor of love. They bought the home three years ago and have put in as much time fixing it up—rewiring the electrical system, overhauling the kitchen and exploring its many forgotten nooks and crannies—as they have fashioning a classic and comfortable scheme that honors the home’s splendid

66

sense of history. “We kept finding things like the window above the front door, which was completely painted over,” Stanton recalls. “We just started scraping and, once we punched through, everything instantly looked so much bigger and brighter.” Built in 1818, the home is the oldest brick structure in town, and comes with a long and checkered history of owners, additions and mishaps, including a fire in the late 1960s. But it has withstood the test of time, and its many unique architectural features—such as staggered ceiling heights and intricate mantels—are proof positive. And the living room, with its soaring 11-foot ceiling, deep khaki walls and bountiful textures, is inherently calming. “There’s just something about this room,” Stanton says. “You get here and you sit down, and you instantly relax. It’s wonderful.” Located just an hour’s drive from the big city, Madison is not too far off the beaten path, but remote enough to make it a wonderful discovery. “My parents live on Lake Oconee at Reynolds Plantation,” explains

DESIGNER JIMMY STANTON IS SMITTEN WITH THE WALKABLE WAY OF LIFE ON ATLANTA’S WESTIDE, BUT HE ALWAYS MAKES TIME TO SLIP AWAY TO THE SERENITY OF MADISON, GEORGIA

Stanton, “and on the way to visit them one weekend, we drove through Madison. We immediately thought, ‘this is incredible.’” With Athens and Reynolds Plantation—and, in turn, The National and The RitzCarlton—a convenient 30 minutes away, it was easy to fall head over heels. And because neither Stanton nor Greco work on Mondays, Madison is their favorite place to spend long weekends—their Chihuahua pup, Terry, ever in tow. In fact, Stanton describes it as a place where time stands still. “Our cell phones don’t work well, and since we’re right on the square, we can walk to all the restaurants, shop at the interiors market and pass by the old graveyard. There are so many wonderful old things to see; we sort of just get up and have our coffee and go.” The slow pace of things is a nice contrast to their life back in Atlanta, one that couldn’t be more urbane. The two live, work and play in the burgeoning Westside, walking to many of their favorite restaurants—among them Abattoir, JCT Kitchen and West Egg Café—and arriving at work in as few as five minutes. And though their Madison

home is the perfect embodiment of the Stanton aesthetic—cozy, intimate and replete with meaningful objects—the couple’s two-bedroom condominium at Westside Provisions, which they moved into just six months ago, demonstrates how the same items can skew sleek and modern. Here, Stanton’s telltale pieces and palette gain an edge thanks to cool touches like a mod freestanding fireplace in the entryway, a rich black guest bathroom, and a vibrantly colored Hudson’s Bay blanket tempering the dark gray walls of the master bedroom. A smart floor plan and sleek kitchen are just a few of the perks their city space offers, but without all the surplus of their former Atlanta home. Even the master bath, outfitted with subway tiled marble and espresso-toned cabinets, was a breath of fresh air. “We had just finished doing the bathrooms in Madison, and it can be a nightmare working on old houses,” says Stanton. “When we walked in and saw how nice it was, we said, ‘This is perfect, we’re ready to move in.’” And so it happened; in just one week, they did. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

Expertly arranged art groupings are found in both of Stanton’s homes. 70

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

While the objects Stanton selected for his Madison home reflect the weathered, untamed surroundings, those in his Atlanta condominium read as clean and crisp. Yet nearly all of them were sourced through Stanton Home Furnishings, revealing the versatility of this talented designer’s eye for style. In Atlanta, he painted everything in the kitchen—cabinets, walls, ceiling included—one soft, serene shade of gray.

left “I have so many collections, and considering our limited space in the city, it was nice to have a place to put all of them in Madison,” Stanton notes. “I have two cabinets full of black-and-white pottery, porcelain and pewter.” below In the master bathroom in the city, a repurposed scientific scale serves as a clever container for a pair of succulents. Meanwhile, the condominium’s den, above and below, earned the curious addition of a Sinclair Dino sign.

opposite The only thing left intact to the original kitchen were the already-gorgeous wood floors. For the rest of the design transformation, Stanton called upon the expertise of Atlanta designer Jamie McPherson, of Hearth & Home Interiors, who helped select elements such as a strong iron window, Viking appliances and the wood paneling spanning the walls. Stanton added rustic submarine lights as unexpected ceiling fixtures, their crackly patina playing up the room’s other rich textures. “We’ve got the superfancy kitchen, but we don't cook,” Stanton laughs. “We tell people it makes the best Digiornos!” An antique hutch, at right, stores kitchen essentials. 71

The dining room is one of the most traditional spaces in the Madison home. Its mix of rustic textures and classic lines pays tribute to the sense of history evident throughout, and preserved so avidly in this storied Southern town.

74

Although Stanton had a treasure trove of inventory available to furnish both homes, he took the opportunity to incorporate a few unique heirlooms into the scheme, as well. In Madison, some of the special pieces inherited from his grandmother include an oval mirror over the bed in the master bedroom, Sheraton-style chairs with original crewelwork fabric and a drop-leaf table in the dining room. Throughout the house, he has created stylish vignettes and groupings of collections.

opposite The colors of the blanket on the master bed in the city may look straight out of the groovy ’70s, but they harken back to a couple centuries before that. In the 1770s, Stanton explains, ďŹ shermen would trade these traditional wool blankets to Native Americans in exchange for furs and other goods. Here, its vivid stripes help temper the deep gray walls and the rustic touches found throughout the space. Rugged platform bed, Stanton Home Furnishings. 75

clockwise from top left The master bedroom in Madison is classically simple, just as you’d expect for a space that Stanton describes as a “forever home.” The old tub was original to the Madison house when the couple purchased it, but that’s all that remains intact in the master bath. Several pieces culled from Stanton Home Furnishings, from pressed botanicals to a handwoven rug, help to warm up the space, taking it from basic to brilliant. In Atlanta, the guest bathroom packs maximum impact thanks to inky black walls, submarine-light sconces and artwork by Todd Murphy, available through Astolfi Art. In the same unit, the master bathroom is at once sleek and cozy, an inviting hide bench helping to enhance this effect. The accents Stanton selected for his master bedroom in Madison give the impression that he’s lived there much longer than his three years.

77

78

left At Westside Provisions, an intimate terrace has more than enough space for soaking up the spring weather. “We formerly had such a big house in Atlanta, and it was just the two of us,” Stanton says. “Both of us work so late, and we wanted a comfortable space to come home to.”

Readers can see Stanton’s home in person this spring, when it joins the Madison in May Spring Tour of Homes May 6-7, along with that of Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts proprietors Dan Belman and Randy Korando. Advance tickets are just $25 each. Learn more at mmcc-arts.org or madisonga.org.

opposite Speakers were installed in every room of the house, including the bathrooms and outdoor spaces, where they are built onto the porch and into the trees—one of their trunks outfitted with a tiny remote. “If you’re listening to music or watching a show, the sound carries throughout the house, and it’s so nice,” says Stanton above Their eightyear-old Chihuaha, Terry, gets the run of both stomping grounds. right At the back of the Madison house, where there once stood only a window, Stanton and Greco added French doors, now leading to a welcoming deck. This helped to visually expand the living spaces and, in the process, created a fabulous spot to visit with friends. The landscaping is the handiwork of designers Brooks Garcia, past, and Tripp Pickles, present. 79

A five-foot-wide table, perfect for entertaining large groups, serves as a strong anchor in the dining area. The spacious pantry provides extra storage, allowing the all-white kitchen to remain airy and elegant. opposite The kitchen’s two islands serve multiple purposes; one is used as a food preparation and storage area while the other can accommodate six for a casual meal.

When a young couple first approached Paige Sumblin Schnell about the design of their dream lake house, they had a few requests. Their Alabama home, situated on a stunning point in The Ridge on Lake Martin, had to be versatile enough for their family of six. It also had to be comfortable and, most importantly, all white. “The client likes lots of white, and you can see that in the space,” says Sumblin Schnell, a principal designer with Tracery Interiors. “It is a marriage of more rustic wood and stone with crisp white, with a little bit of French influence, but not too much.” Juxtaposing natural materials like reclaimed wood beams and floors—harvested from barns in Vermont and Georgia—with planked

walls swathed in Benjamin Moore’s China White, Sumblin Schnell and assistant Anna Kay Porch created a soothing color palette that didn’t deter from the main attraction: the view. “When a home is on a lake like this, you want every room to face the lake. You want to make sure that you capture the views,” says Sumblin Schnell, describing how she planned the space to embrace the surrounding scenery. But the most challenging aspect of the home’s design was keeping it from becoming too formal for a family with four children. Modern touches of linen and galvanized metal soften stately French antiques, while dividing the living room into intimate seating areas makes it

From a cheerful guest bedroom overlooking the lake to a bathroom with a view, Sumblin Schnell said there is no sheetrock in the house at all. Rather, natural materials were used to draw the outside in. opposite To balance out the hard lines of the planked walls in the master bedroom, the designers added softer, feminine touches: An upholstered headboard, mirrored side table and crystal chandelier give the room an air of laidback luxury.

feel at once cozy and grand. Moored by striking architectural details like the substantial fireplace and natural stone pillars, the space also has playful touches, like graceful chandeliers in unexpected places, keeping it light and unconventional. The casual vibe continues into the kitchen, where small appliances and plenty of extra storage are tucked away in a back pantry. “It relieves the kitchen of some of the stress of being utilitarian, allowing you to do more beautiful architectural elements in the kitchen,” says the designer. “It really opens up your possibilities.” Offset by the natural wood and white color palette, these possibilities include modern details, like two marble-topped islands anchoring the room, a large farmhouse sink and open shelving

—the perfect place to display vintage stoneware. As outdoor living space is essential to any lake house, large French doors lead from the living room onto a Beaumaniere limestone porch, continuing the neutral palette. And to further encourage the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, a dock features a stone fireplace, grill and dining area, providing a place to unwind by the water. Because the space is large enough for entertaining and family gatherings, the home sees no shortage of use. And as visitors to this resplendent getaway can attest, relaxation is unavoidable. “It really resonates with people,” says Sumblin Schnell. “They instantly like it. The space just feels great.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 85

SIMPLE SOPHISTICATION WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING AWAY, ATLANTA TASTEMAKER KAY DOUGLASS AND HER FAMILY ANSWER THE BECK AND CALL OF THEIR 1920S LODGE-TURNEDVACATION HOME ON LAKE RABUN

CLINTON SMITH: YOU FORMERLY HAD A VACATION HOUSE AT ROSEMARY BEACH, WHICH YOU HAVE SINCE SOLD. HOW’D YOU END UP AT LAKE RABUN? Kay Douglass: “Funny enough, my husband, Jim, went to the lake for the first time last year while I was on a buying trip to France. He went up on an invite from a friend and came back saying that he had found the perfect lake, and it was only one-anda-half hours away from Atlanta. We didn’t discuss it again until one hot, sultry June day, when we called Lakemont real estate agent Michael McGaughey on a whim and asked if we could come up— in two hours! He laughed, said ‘yes,’ and just a few weeks later we knew that we had found the perfect house!”

than going up and walking into those light and bright rooms with striking colors. It’s kind of like when you walk into a great hotel— a happy surprise! At home, my house is much more toned down, all very white with only pops of yellow.” HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SLEEP OVER? “We can have up to 12 people sleeping comfortably, but when we went house hunting we had no intention of having as many bedrooms. Since the house was a former lodge, there are just so many little rooms. Now, each bedroom has its own bright color palette—citron, cobalt, orange and verde.” YOUR USE OF COLOR IS GENIUS. YOU FOUND THAT YOUR CITY AND COUNTRY HOUSES DIFFER? “I have colors at the lake that I probably could not live with everyday— the orange and that crazy fuschia. However, I like nothing more

WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY? “I think most environments dictate their color palette. At the lake, the color of the floors takes on a big role. In this particular house, the pine floors have an orange 89

So, I had to add a surprise to the space as well, which, in the living room, was the fuschia-colored chairs.” WHAT’S INSPIRING YOU AT THIS VERY MOMENT? “Right now, I’m about pushing the limits of design with crazy, unexpected color combinations! I’m also about using bright and happy rugs. When I was in Paris for my last buying trip for my shop, South of Market, we found these really fun rugs in bright colors to help spice up our neutral spaces.” YOU MUST BE TALKING ABOUT THOSE COWHIDE RUGS IN THE BEDROOMS—THE ONES IN CITRON AND VERDE. my store to spread the love!” YOUR INTERIORS ALWAYS MAKE POWERFUL STATEMENTS WHILE USING VERY FEW OBJECTS, YET THEY NEVER FEEL EMPTY OR COLD. HOW DO YOU DO THAT? “This is my favorite part of design and how my shop

originally began. I love finding unusual things and giving them new life. It only takes a few really special items to give a house that feeling. When it comes to clients, this part is always interesting. Convincing the client that the crazy object we’re proposing is a must-have to complete their room is sometimes a challenge, but it almost always becomes their favorite and most talked about thing in the house!” Jim and Kay Douglass’ primary residence in Atlanta was featured in our May 2009 issue and has since been published in the Italian edition of Architectural Digest, as well as the Brazilian, Russian and French versions of Elle Decor. Miles Redd Marcia Sherrill chats with the New York design superstar who’s originally from the ATL MILES, YOU ARE AN ATLANTA NATIVE. WHAT LED

I came to New York for college. I started at Parsons, but ultimately graduated from NYU with a degree in film.

YOU TO THE BIG CITY?

YOU LOOK ABOUT 16. ISN’T THERE A LAW AGAINST CHILD LABOR? HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU

Thanks for the compliment. After graduating from college, I went to work for John Rosselli and then for Bunny Williams. I was 21 at the time, so I started right out of the gate. IN THIS ISSUE, WE

HOMES—ANY ADVICE? I think a second home can be great. Since it is not a primary residence, people will often be a bit more creative. I say treat it like a hotel and enjoy yourself. YOUR PARENTS STILL LIVE IN ATLANTA. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN FOR YOUR FAMILY’S

We jokingly call it Country Deco. I was very much inspired by Henri Samuel’s Paris apartment, which is sort of hysterical for a mountain house, but I dumbed it down and I think it works. YOUR DESIGNS ARE SO YOU. VACATION HOUSE IN NORTH CAROLINA?

YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW WORKING DESIGNERS TO HAVE A “LOOK,” YET IT NEVER OVERWHELMS YOUR CLIENTS’ VISIONS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE LESSLY—TO KEEP YOUR DESIGNS IN LOCK-STEP WITH YOUR CLIENTS? I really have had the luck of having great clients with strong opinions. This gives each job a unique feeling, and that’s what you are sensing. YOU ARE SO GLAMOROUS AND YOUR STYLE IS SO POLISHED. IS THERE ANYTHING FROM YOUR SOUTHERN CHILDHOOD THAT INFLUENCES YOU?

Absolutely! I always say ‘the South has the taste.’ The thing that I take away most is that we enjoy life—and isn’t that the point of everything? YOU’VE LONG BEEN THE DARLING OF THE DESIGN PRESS. WHAT’S NEXT FOR ATLANTA’S VERY OWN WUNDERKIND? I hope just more good decoration and good times!
