GREAT STYLE
Last summer, we started work on a charity showhouse project that culminated this past December with more than 6,000 visitors having toured it. The 2009 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House (a benefit for the Alliance Children’s Theatre) was a product of countless volunteers, generous sponsors and more than 20 talented design professionals. When you turn to the story, starting on page 81, you’ll notice that the holiday decorations are, well, absent. So that we wouldn’t have to wait until the December issue to share it with you, we photographed the house without the trees, garlands and wreaths. From the beginning, this house was about promoting the best in local design; the holiday trappings were the cherry on top. If you missed touring Christmas House in person, you’ll want to be sure to mark you calendars for two spectacular showhouses we’re sponsoring this year, both of which are well into the planning stages: The Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens (April 17-May 9) and the Cashiers Designer Show House (August 21-September 5), a benefit for the Cashiers [North Carolina] Historical Society. Both houses promise to inspire, showcasing the best of Atlanta style. Simply put, we can’t wait! P.S. EVER WONDER HOW A SHOWHOUSE ROOM COMES TOGETHER? Go to AtlantaHomesMag.com
later this month for a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process. Select designers take us along their journey, step-by-step, as they prepare for the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, which opens in April. This weekly online-exclusive series will cover everything from the inspiration for their spaces to final color, paint and furniture selections to the installation and big reveal. Please join us.

DESIGN DOSSIER
AMY MORRIS In the first installment of our new series on local tastemakers, we catch up with a designer known for creating interiors that are beautiful, comfortable and well-edited It’s not surprising, really, that Amy Morris is one of Atlanta’s rising design stars. After all, she had expert tutelage even after graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, first interning with Gandy/Peace Inc. and then working with Barbara Westbrook. Make no mistake, however: her own firm—Amy D. Morris Interiors, which she opened in 2005—has a signature style all its own. It’s perhaps best described as classic but not predictable, emphasizing a fresh, sophisticated look. Morris knew early on that design was her calling. “I grew up in Brookhaven and, on the weekends, my dad and I used to walk through houses that were under construction for fun,” she recalls. “I was only in grade school but I remember thinking ‘Why did they do that?’ I’d be thinking of ways that they could have been done better! By the time I got to high school, I was constantly looking through magazines and ‘studying’ every home I was in. I knew I wanted be a designer.” That kind of clear direction is readily apparent in Morris’ work. “I love making a statement in a room,” she says, “creating rooms that will be remembered. But they must be livable!” To that end, the designer feels it’s important to let the house “speak”—to respect the architecture while interpreting the client’s wants and needs. If Morris has one steadfast design rule it’s to “let the house breathe; don’t over-decorate!”
she says. And her decorating dictum couldn’t be bettertimed. “I think people have realized that it’s time to simplify; we don’t really need so much stuΩ. The days of decorating to simply fill a space are over.” EVERY HOME NEEDS…Good window treatments. They
add so much to a room and it’s important not to “skimp” on them. Plus, I believe every home needs a space for a large, fabulous, dramatic mirror. MY MUST-HAVE HOME ACCESSORY IS…Great barware. I love being able to oΩer someone a cocktail in a nice glass. MY FAVORITE ATLANTA SHOPPING SPOT IS…The Westside. It has something for everyone. There are great shops like Bungalow Classic and Sid Mashburn. There’s great food at Abattoir, Bacchanalia and Star Provisions. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends, do some shopping and then grab a great lunch or dinner. I GET MY BEST INSPIRATION FROM…Everything around me. Books, magazines, fashion, even my kids. I once did a nursery where the palette was influenced by a watercolor painting my 5-year-old brought home from school. MY FAVORITE MUSEUM IS…The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam. It was so incredible not only to see Rembrandt’s art but to also see how an artist lived in that era. An artist’s home says a lot to me.

STYLE (profile)
WHEN I GET AN UNEXPECTED DAY TO MYSELF, I LIKE TO…Are you
kidding? I have two kids. I am lucky to get an unexpected second to myself. WHEN I WANT TO KICK BACK AND RELAX, I…Schedule a beach vacation. I love Rosemary Beach in Florida. Not only do I love the architecture, but once you arrive and park your car you don’t have to get back in it until you leave; everything is right there at your fingertips. WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME IS…That I love tennis.
It’s such a great stress reliever for me. Where else can you get a great workout while enjoying friends and having fun? THE ONE PIECE OF DESIGN ADVICE I’D GIVE ANYONE IS…Simplify,
simplify, simplify! MY FAVORITE WAY TO ENTERTAIN IS…A 12- to 14-person casual
dinner party on our patio with great food and great wine. I love to entertain my friends. It’s really an outlet for me!

DESIGNER FAVORI∏ES FAVORITE BED LINENS: For me,
Anichini or DEA. For my kids, Sferra or Matouk. A vignette in the home of one of Morris’ clients makes you think twice about what defines art; the designer’s own kitchen proves that even utilitarian spaces can have a sense of style; an essential in Morris’ design palette is gray, her favorite being Benjamin Moore’s Cumulus Cloud; a hooded chair in Morris’ bedroom seems the perfect place to decide among Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo shoes; the Greek Klismos chair, like this one from Michael Taylor Designs (available through Jerry Pair), is “an elegant staple for any home because it works in both modern and traditional settings,” she says.
THE PLACE I LOVE TO TRAVEL TO
FAVORITE PIECE OF FURNITURE:
MOST IS…Santorini, Greece. To
Greek Klismos chair. It’s such an elegant staple for any home because it works in both modern and traditional settings. FAVORITE DINNERWARE: Formal, Hermès. Everyday, anything white, simple and substantial. FAVORITE WALL COVERING: Donald Kaufman Paint. FAVORITE PAINT COLOR: White; it’s always so fresh and provides a clean palette to work from. FAVORITE DESIGN BOOK: Elements of Style by Michael S. Smith. FAVORITE WINE: Slingshot. FAVORITE FABRIC LINE: A tie between Great Plains from Holly Hunt and Rogers and GoΩigon.
me, it’s the most peaceful place on earth. With stunning views, gorgeous sunsets, great food and friendly locals, it really is magical! THE DESIGNER I LOOK UP TO MOST IS…Victoria Hagan. Her designs
are classic, fresh and timeless. Plus, she’s a successful designer who juggles work and kids! MY PROUDEST DESIGN MOMENT
THE ONE PLACE IN ATLANTA I AL-
CAME WHEN…Kate Abney from
WAYS TAKE GUESTS IS…For sightseeing, the aquarium; it’s always a hit with out-of-town visitors of any age. For a night out, the bar at the St. Regis. Even though it is a newer spot, it’s what I imagine Atlanta’s hit spot would have been like 60 or 70 years ago. Plus, you always see people you know!
Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles called me to tell me I was one of the winners of the magazine’s 2009 bath of the year contest. I think I screamed! MY SIGNATURE COLORS ARE…Gray and white. In my opinion, they are classic, simple and timeless. Then I like to add a “punch” with pops of color!

SEASONAL DELIGH∏ Green garlic reaches its peak at the dawn of early spring in warmer climates like Atlanta’s. This young, just-budding herb is slightly milder and sweeter than its mature counterpart but more fragrant and flavorful than an onion, adding a lovely green sweetness to many of our local dishes by way of sauces, reductions, pastes, marinades and dressings. And it can be pickled for use later in the season, too. “It has the distinctive taste of spring,” says Steven Satterfield, chef at Miller Union, the new Westside hotspot. “It is wonderful in soups, guacamole, scrambled eggs, pesto—anything that might typically call for a little garlic.” >> MILLER UNION TOSSES FRESH FARM LETTUCES WITH A BACON-AND-BUTTERMILK DRESSING, GREEN GARLIC PASTE AND KOSHER SALT, ADDING DIMENSION AND SWEETNESS TO MANY OF ITS SIGNATURE SPRING SALADS. 999 BRADY AVE., ATLANTA 30318. LEGACY & LORE
Vibrant color and vigorously worked surfaces characterize the paintings of Roswell-based artist Sarah Wolfe, on view at Tew Galleries. Her figurative paintings exude the classical quality of Renaissance portraiture but invite further intrigue thanks to textures that vary from smooth to rugged. Also on exhibit are the paintings of Olena Zvyagintseva, a Ukrainian artist inspired by the city life of Kiev as well as the landscapes surrounding her family’s country cottage— the two locales where she splits her time. THE BEST OF ALABAMA Kiva Dunes It’s true in golf and in choosing the perfect golf and beach resort. There are many great golf courses and beautiful beaches throughout the world, but rarely are they found in the same vacation community. Kiva Dunes, located on the magnificent Alabama Gulf Coast, offers owners and guests one of these rare resort communities. Imagine a morning round on one of Golf Digest’s top 70 resort courses and an afternoon on a secluded beach with over a half mile of pristine, silky white Gulf Coast sand. The developers of Kiva Dunes had a vision to create a luxurious beach and golf resort that would evolve into a uniquely inviting beachside community rather than follow the conventional path of planting a “cookie cutter” resort on over 300 acres of coastal land that grows more precious every day. They have maintained this vision for 13 years and their patience has been rewarded. The architecture throughout the community varies from modern, to classic southern, to West Indies; and every home and condominium offers the amenities and atmosphere that is sure to soothe and relax. The first phase of Kiva Village, which blends perfectly into Kiva Dune’s architectural landscape is completed, and units are available for purchase – there will never been a better opportunity to buy. Whether it’s a view of the Gulf,
the pristine dunes, Mobile Bay or the golf course, Kiva Dunes offers you that perfect resort environment or “sweet spot” to reflect, unwind and entertain.

In Town and Country
Simply Serenbe
Nan Haverty retreats to Serenbe It has been an extraordinary year in real estate for Nan Haverty. She is excited to announce her move to Beacham and Company, Realtors. Nan says, “I have always admired Glennis. She demonstrates the type of leadership I can trust and depend on. Her boutique firm dominates not only the Atlanta market but luxury properties throughout Georgia. I am thrilled to bring my In Town and Country experience to her real estate team.” The hard-working mom credits her success to her supportive husband, patient children, loyal team and having wonderful clients who trust her ability to get the job done. She says she is blessed to have Sarah Pinson, also a licensed agent, as her executive assistant.
Real estate has been challenging. What do you do to relax? “I put on my jeans and head to Serenbe, a farm to table community, located just 45 minutes outside of Atlanta. Serenbe is a place where my family can find downtime together.” You’re a co-founder of Serenbe–what do you love most about the community? “I love Serenbe’s architecture and rolling landscape, I see it as a canvas to paint and build extraordinary places, nurture relationships and respect nature.” How involved are you with the real estate within Serenbe? “Because this is my place to wind down, I refer clients to my good friend and Serenbe resident Sandra Storrar who is a licensed and seasoned broker. She embraces the Serenbe life daily.” What are your children’s favorite things to do at Serenbe? “My children love the freedom and the independence that Serenbe offers. They enjoy riding their bikes, hiking, tennis and checking out the newborn animals at the inn. A real treat is enjoying a late night movie shown at the stables under the stars.” Tell me about the restaurants at Serenbe? “Yes they are all wonderful with their own different ambience. I enjoy the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop lattes in the morning and their great burgers for lunch. Naturally, my children love the sweets there. The Hil is such a great place to meet friends for cocktails and enjoy long gourmet dinners. The Farmhouse at The Inn is such a romantic place to have dinner and a night cap by the fireplace in the parlor.” And the new spa and salon? “Yes I am so thrilled the Blue Med Spa has opened here. It really is a treat for me to be able to get facials and massages just a step away from my home. Paisley Salon has such a strong following, people drive from Atlanta to get their hair done! I spoil myself there having it washed and blown out before heading to dinner.” How about shopping? “Absolutely. The well-known Bilt-house, established in Atlanta, now has a boutique here. Goodes is a one of a kind home store, carrying great linens, antiques and cool furniture. EcoMeme offers green shopping. And Harris & Clark is a southern specialty food shop.” What kinds of galleries or artists exist there? “Art is part of Serenbe. We have Newington Photography, StudioSwan and Jane Whitehurst art galleries. We always have great turnouts for special exhibits and new gallery openings. It is attracting people from all over the world.”
Written by Jessica Vaquera Photography by Ed Wolkis
Is it hard to pack up and head to the city? “Yes it is. The kids and the dogs are reluctant to pack up. I remind them quickly that Serenbe summer camp is just around the corner and next weekend will be here before they know it.” CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

EVERY HOME IS A MASTERPIECE Jim Meathe and Shaba Derazi of YM Derazi Custom Homes, new friends of Serenbe and clients of Nan Haverty are considered to be the most sought after builders of luxury homes in Atlanta and Private Eagle Island, Michigan. They now have their eye on Serenbe. One of their beautiful homes featured (left) is in the heart of Buckhead. They are known for their attention to detail, selection of materials, many of which are imported from Europe. They work closely with a hand selected group of renowned architects. Nan says, “It is exciting to see builders of their caliber taking an interest in Serenbe. I am privileged to be working with both Jim and Shaba In Town and Country.

Here we go again! It’s our 18th year, and for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles it’s 7 come 11. They’ve been one of our Premier Sponsors for eleven years, and we’ve relished every minute of it. Their review of past events and preview of the next has been wonderful press for us, and we’ve loved working with Gina Christman, as anyone would. Thanks AH&L.

For our 18th year we’ve tailored our events a bit, introducing a “night-out at selected restaurants.” We’ll call them “Dine Around Dinners” and they’ll be held Thursday night. We think and hope this will enable more folks to enjoy meeting and getting to know our visiting winemakers in a smaller group setting and allow the winemakers to show off their wines accompanied by matching fare from a special chef in the chef’s own place. We’ll still have our winemaker dinners in private homes hosted by wine and museum lovers and featuring special winemaker/chef pairings. These will occur Friday night, and they are always sold out events, so study the lineups when they are published.
Senior Development Manager Woodie Wisebram
Our feature event, as always, is the Saturday Live Auction and the increasingly attractive Silent Auction, which follow Atlanta’s greatest food and wine fest, the Vintners’ Reception featuring extraordinary culinary creations from about thirty-five of Atlanta’s finest chefs, accompanied by wines from our visiting winery friends. You’ll find no better grazing anywhere.

Happenings at the High John Portman: Art & Architecture Through April 18 Featuring architectural projects, furniture, paintings, and sculpture by Atlantabased architect and artist John Portman. The fifteen completed and current architectural projects included span five decades of national and international developments. The exhibition also features paintings and sculptures by Portman -most never before publicly exhibited. The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten Through May 30 The High premieres an exhibition of new work by California-based photographer Robert Weingarten. Consisting of twenty-one large-scale (60 x 90 in.) digitally created portraits of American icons, Weingarten’s project represents a bold departure from traditional camera portraiture. The Allure of the Automobile March 21-June 20 The exhibition presents 18 of the world’s rarest and most brilliantly conceived cars ranging from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, including masterpieces by Bugatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Ferrari. These cars combine state-of-the-art engineering, meticulous craftsmanship and groundbreaking design to create works of “rolling sculpture.”

Coming Soon European Design Since 1985: Shaping the New Century June 5-August 29 This exhibition is the first critical survey of contemporary Western European decorative arts and product design from the turn of the 21st century. The furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, and metalwork range from familiar mass-produced objects to limited-edition luxury goods by such celebrity designers as Philippe Starck and Marc Newson, and rising younger talents such as Marcel Wanders and Tord Boontje. Dalí: The Late Work August 7-January 9, 2011 The High will be the sole venue for the first exhibition to focus specifically on Salvador Dalí’s art after 1940. The exhibition will feature more than 40 paintings and a related group of drawings, prints and other Dalí ephemera. While Dalí is best known as a leading member of the surrealist movement of the 1930s, “Dalí: The Late Work” will reassess his career from 1940 to his death in 1989. Dalí’s late work-which makes up more than half of his total artistic output-drew inspiration simultaneously from the old masters and the contemporary world. Radcliffe Bailey: Art of an Ancient Soul February 5-May 8, 2011 This exhibition of more than 30 works-many large in scale and all created since 1994-looks at the influence of African art on the work of Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey. Featuring floor and wall sculptures, works-on-paper, and glass works, the exhibition highlights the artist’s experimentation with diverse forms.

Jean-Guilaume Prats Château Cos d’Estournel Jean-Guillaume Prats was born into a family where wine is religion. He is the fourth generation to be involved in the management of Château Cos d’Estournel. His father Bruno, who is now retired, was a key figure in the Bordeaux trade, managing Cos d’Estournel from 1970 to 1998. Jean-Guillaume’s grandfather, Fernand Ginestet, bought the second-growth St.-Estephe château in 1917; he also owned other Bordeaux estates, including Château Margaux, as well as a large negociant firm, Ginestet. His other grandfather, Jean Prats, was the founder and president of Saint-Raphael, a major French spirit company of his time. In 1994 Jean-Guillaume returned to Cos, after graduating from the European Business School, and worked with his father. Four years later, the young executive was in charge as president of the estate. In that same year the family sold the château; then, in 2000, it was sold again to Michel Reybier, a French businessman. Prats stayed on through all the changes, and is now CEO of Domaines Reybier, which includes Cos, Château Marbuzet (also in St.-Estephe) and a new high-end wine called Goulée. He is a member of the board of Directors of the Conseil des Crus Classés en 1855, The Académie du Vin de Bordeaux and the Commanderie du Bontemps du Médoc et des Graves, de Sauternes et Barsac. Beside his professional career, Jean-Guillaume is also a keen player of real tennis (jeu de paume) and was the youngest player ever to play for the French team in an international match. He was French amateur champion in 1994, 1995,1996 and 1998.
Amalia & Florencia Palmaz Palmaz Vineyards Julio and Amalia Palmaz established Palmaz Vineyards to accomplish a shared dream: revive an important part of Napa’s wine-making heritage. The dream began many years ago when they first moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and fell in love with the unique charm of the Napa Valley. Years passed, but the Palmaz’s dream never faltered, and the Napa Valley’s hold on the family grew stronger. Finally, the vision began to take shape when they learned of an abandoned vineyard and winery at the foot of Mount George in east Napa. It was love at first sight, and they began to restore the property in 1997. Ever interested in mechanics and engineering, Dr. Palmaz played an integral role in designing Palmaz Vineyards’ elaborate gravity flow winery. He now lives in Napa with his family and also maintains an impressive collection of vintage race cars! Julio and Amalia’s children Florencia and Christian are both involved in the family business. Florencia’s interest in food and wine led her to establish three enterprises with her mother, Haute at Home, GoodHeart Brand Specialty Foods, and GoodHeart SureChef. Christian is Director of Operations and his wife Jessica works at the winery as Director of Hospitality.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT On the behalf of the Junior League of Atlanta, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 13th annual Tour of Kitchens! Since 1916, the Junior League of Atlanta’s volunteer efforts have helped improve the lives of women and children in Atlanta. With nearly 4,000 members today, we remain committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action of trained volunteers.
This year alone, JLA members will invest over 120,000 volunteer hours with over 90 community partners to improve the lives of women and children in Atlanta. Our volunteers will provide services such as therapeutic recreation activities for children with disabilities, counseling at a bereavement camp, mentoring middle school Latina girls, and working in the Teen Center, Emergency Room and Special Care Nursery for Grady Hospital. This is an incredible feat when you consider that 90% of our active members are employed! And while the JLA Tour of Kitchens is an incredible resource for those who are looking to remodel or build a kitchen, its most important role is to provide critical dollars to fund the work that JLA volunteers do in the community, and support the training that allows our members to be community leaders today and in the years to come.
Susanna h Ba lis h
Of course the JLA Tour of Kitchens could not happen without the tremendous effort of approximately 60 League members who donate their time to produce the Tour. To our fabulous Chair Marsha Sims and her fantastic committee, I extend a well-deserved and resounding Thank You! Your enthusiasm, commitment, and leadership have made the 13th Tour of Kitchens an incredible success! I would also like to give a special thanks to our longtime partner, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, and in particular Brad Hanner for, year after year, providing his extraordinary expertise! As you enjoy this outstanding weekend of kitchens, please remember that all of the money raised directly supports our mission-based programs to improve the lives of women and children in Atlanta. Thank you for supporting the Junior League of Atlanta. Enjoy the Tour!

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E 2 0 1 0 TO U R O F K I T C H E N S C H A I R Welcome to the 13th Annual Junior League of Atlanta Tour of Kitchens! Through your support and that of our sponsors and kitchen designers, the Tour has raised more than one million dollars since its beginning to aid League sponsored community initiatives. The Tour of Kitchens allows you inside private homes to see the latest in kitchen design. Whether you are interested in remodeling or updating your kitchen or just appreciate unique design, the Tour gives you access to working designer kitchens and ideas from the latest appliances and cabinetry to counter-top and paint color choices. This event also puts you in the company of some of Atlanta’s top chefs. Many of the kitchens on the Tour feature chef demonstrations, where you get an up-close and personal recipe demonstration and tasting. While you are touring beautiful homes and tasting fabulous food, you are also helping to support the mission of The Junior League of Atlanta, which is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We appreciate every Tour of Kitchens ticket purchased because the proceeds from this wonderful event help fund our mission-based programs to improve the lives of women and children in Atlanta. So please, enjoy the Tour! We thank you for your support of The Junior League of Atlanta and for helping us make a difference in the Atlanta community!

MITCHELL ANDERSON & BRYAN “ ROCKSTAR” KRAATZ , METROFRESH Actor/Chef Mitchell Anderson and Singer/Chef Bryan “Rockstar” Kraatz make up two-thirds of the MetroFresh (www.metrofreshatl.com) tag team of chefs. Emphasizing seasonal, local ingredients, they create a daily menu of creative soups, salads, sandwiches and dinner specials that have been keeping Midtown Atlanta healthy for four years. Surprisingly, when you put two performers in the kitchen, you don’t always get a giant clash of egos, you sometimes just get a really good show!
C HE F SCOTT SERPAS, SERPAS TRUE FOOD South Louisiana native and Executive Chef Scott Serpas has a flair for carving out a style all his own, garnering attention of diners and critics alike. An expatriated Atlantan, Serpas has embarked on his first independent restaurant venture, Serpas True Food, located in the historic Old Fourth Ward. Best described as “True Food,” the innovative American dishes encompass fresh ingredients that emit comforting flavors. Serpas enjoyed cooking with his Louisiana family daily, cultivating a culinary philosophy that is centered around single ingredients and natural flavors. This ideology continues to drive his cooking style and is showcased on the menu of the restaurant.
HE A D PIZ Z AIOLO MASSIMO ANDREOZ Z I, FRIT T I A native of Naples, Italy, Massimo Andreozzi brings more than a decade of experience tossing and baking traditional Neapolitan pizza to his role as the Fritti Head Pizzaiolo. She loves to work with anything fresh, especially local vegetables, fresh seafood, and seasonal ingredients. Gould references Julia Child as a profound culinary influence, stating, “You have to respect Julia Child because of what she was and what she stood for.” Gould is proud to be one of Atlanta’s top female chefs and working for Canoe has given her the opportunity to cultivate and present her talents and ability.

Savor Gourmet was established in 2004 in Atlanta by husband and wife team, January and Robert Hodgson. The couple’s passion for fine gourmet food products, hard-to-find antiques from all over the world, and a taste for all that is epicurean led them to open Savor in hopes of bringing Atlantans a taste of what they truly love- gourmet foods and flawless home furnishings. Prior to Savor’s inception, January spent her years in the food retail business and Robert Hodgson was a professional geologist. After uniting in marriage, Robert and January decided to combine their worldly experience to create Savor.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N Along with the need in every kitchen for the perfect flow and function is the need for a wonderful focal point. It’s so important to edit the other details in order to create an amazing focal point while leaving space for the eye to rest. In the end, the space has even more continuity and presence by keeping the details to a minimum. In this particular kitchen, the cabinets and color scheme were chosen so they would be very understated and simple. This allows the brick hood, which is architectural in nature, to take center stage. The materials selected for the hood compliment the wood beams in the kitchen and the numerous brick accents throughout the home. With the massive brick hood as such a dramatic center piece, it was important to let that element shine and keep all of the other details clean, simple, and subtle. In order to provide the breadth of space needed for this massive brick structure, the windows were distanced further apart than originally planned. This eliminated much of the space previously planned for wall cabinets. As a solution to maximize dish storage while eliminating the wall cabinets, a tall deep dish pantry was substituted for wall cabinets, which more than makes up for the lost wall space

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N It just feels like home! It exudes warmth and comfort, and you just naturally gravitate to a seat at the island in front of the huge rustic fireplace under the high, painted bead board ceiling. But this kitchen can work hard with its built in refrigerator and freezer, pro cooking, double oven, warming drawer, micro drawer, and trash compactor – all wrapped up in simple, elegant cabinetry. Taken as a whole, this space is the meticulous expression of the homeowners’ sophisticated, yet wonderfully livable style. The starting point was easy, move the kitchen from a small, cramped space at the front of the house to a much larger area in the adjacent family room. Then open the space from front to back, allowing natural light to flow in at both ends, and let the new kitchen be the center of attention in this multifunctional great room. Determining the location was just the beginning. That’s when the homeowners turned to Jeff Reed, at Diversified Cabinet Distributors, to take their wish list and turn it into reality. They had very specific ideas – a long open galley kitchen with a raised bar for seating, two sinks, professional cooking with a custom decorative hood, lots of storage, glass front cabinets for display – and all to feel like classic craftsman made furniture. Jeff introduced the homeowners to Crystal Cabinet Works of Princeton, Minnesota, a supplier of custom furniture quality cabinetry. He worked with the homeowners’ hand drawn sketches to incorporate their specific wants and needs into a detailed cabinet layout, and helped them finalize their finish selections – inset cabinetry using a classic Shaker door style in quarter sawn white oak blending traditional medium and dark tone stains.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N A study in glamour is what the homeowner of this kitchen remodel in Sandy Springs requested – oh, and don’t forget the coffee/tea bar! Rose Hall Kitchen Galleria started the planning with all four members of the family having input. The wall between the original kitchen and dining room came down first – creating an open floor-plan conducive to busy family life and entertaining. The repositioning of the pantry to the back of the kitchen increased storage – in a beautiful and functional format. An interesting L-shaped island positioned the cooking area with a Viking professional range-top and double ovens conveniently along the back and also created a breakfast bar large enough to accommodate four comfortable custom designed barstools. The designers at Rose Hall made sure the coffee/ tea bar included special compartments that hide all of the equipment and supplies, beverage drawer refrigerators for cold supplies, and ample glass and cup storage. It has become the hub for morning activity and since expanded to a smoothie bar.

Where does the glamour come in? Special design elements such as a custom designed iron window to allow for ambiance and access to the wonderful backyard view, smoky antique mirror at the prep sink, hand-made glass brick backsplash and a rich dark espresso stain on cherry cabinetry. The plans and materials came together so well, it inspired the addition of a redesigned laundry room, powder room and mud area, and the addition of new dining room furniture- all equally as sophisticated for a very fashionable family!

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N This new Italianate estate home designed by Harrison Design Associates (HDA) and built by Eric Johnson of E2 Development features large open areas perfect for entertaining. Michael Bell of Inspirations Kitchen & Bath worked closely with HDA’s architectural and design team to create a large kitchen that is truly the “heart of the home,” providing professional functionality while also serving as the center for entertaining and family activities. Drawing from the architect’s vision for an Italianate style, the Tuscan-glazed hand-crafted cabinetry with traditional inset doors and extrathick drawer fronts enhances the clean lines of this home while extra-tall cabinets accentuate the 12’ ceilings of this majestic kitchen. The main sink is centered on a grand window that floods the kitchen with an abundance of natural light. In the cooking area, a chimney-style hood over a 48” professional range is flanked on both sides by integrated refrigerators and freezers, creating a strong focal point for this kitchen The Italian Renaissance style is further accentuated with a generous island constructed from Khaya Mahogany finished in a warm antique brown. The heavy doors with applied moldings along with turned posts on each corner lend a furniture-appearance to the island. This multi-functional area includes a sink for food preparation along with numerous storage solutions and a microwave drawer. The island also provides abundant seating space for informal entertaining. An accompanying dining hutch and wet bar with wine cooler and ice maker provide the final complement to this Italianate-inspired kitchen.

This entire home is designed around entertaining. From an intimate dinner for two, to a sit down formal dinner for 24 or a cocktail party for 200 people, this home has the perfect space for each. The kitchen, caterer’s kitchen/butler’s pantry and outdoor kitchen are all designed to be flexible enough to accommodate all of these functions. Two sliding panels allow the dining room to be directly connected to the caterer’s kitchen for serving or isolated for a more formal setting. The kitchen is large enough to accommodate a crowd with serving at the raised counter and table or a comfortable family dinner at the table overlooking the pool. A snack is possible sitting at the counter bathed in sunlight from the skylights overhead. Of course, a candlelit dinner for two in the intimate niche or a pool side meal served from the outdoor kitchen is a pleasant way to spend a summer evening. All of these activities happen within a space that celebrates the interplay of textures and light. Details like the back of the island, where the travertine floor wraps up the wall to meet the mosaic tile in an irregular, soft, undulating line simulating an abstract Tuscan landscape, the custom teak cabinets, and artisan lights in the summer outdoor kitchen are what make these spaces unique. Take a minute to relax, enjoy the view, textures and light that surround you.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N Located in the historic Garden Hills neighborhood, the original home was torn down and the homeowners contracted Harrison Design Associates to design a new home that would architecturally compliment the historic features of the neighborhood. Sweeney and Son Contracting began the construction phase of the home and contracted Brooks Kitchens and Baths to design cabinetry that would have a timeless style along with all the qualities of an older historic home. To bring this concept to life, Lisa Brooks of BKB incorporated unique details into the kitchen space that would give it not only timeless style but would include modern day features. The kitchen design reflects a historic persona by the use of classic antique white finished cabinetry, ample glass doors and extra large dental moldings. To bring some modernistic appeal to the kitchen, we selected a large Wolf stainless steel range, an oversized custom designed hood and hidden appliances behind custom cabinet panel doors provides this modern essence. Designed for a very busy family, another unique feature of this space is the large children’s entertaining center that houses a set of Sub-Zero fridge drawers, microwave, espresso maker and hidden sink nestled in the kitchen area. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large butler’s pass through to join the kitchen with the formal dining area and was designed to mimic the classic style of the kitchen. With great attention to detail by the architect, contractor and designer, this project brought a concept to reality which adds charm to the neighborhood and enhances the lifestyle of the homeowners.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N Here’s a cozy Kitchen that works in the real world. You won’t want to miss this Kitchen; it may provide just the right ideas for your renovation! A bungalow in the intown oasis of Loring Heights provides the perfect location for these busy professionals. This quaint home’s Kitchen did not accommodate the lifestyle of its owners. The cramped, outdated space was tiny, making cooking and entertaining difficult as well as lacking storage and modern amenities. The owners turned to Distinctive Remodeling Solutions to provide a new Kitchen that would transform the home’s main level into a multifunctional environment. Without changing the home’s original footprint, Distinctive created a new layout that now includes an open floor plan, easy access to the Dining area, and more natural light. By removing a wall between the Sunroom and Kitchen, and a wall at the Dining Room, the length of the Kitchen doubled. An additional existing kitchen window was relocated to create natural light that now bathes the space. The opened floor plan allows for easy flow with the rest of the main level. Distinctive’s transformation, a seamless blend of old to new, melds traditional and modern resulting in a classic appeal. Warm Cherry cabinetry in a Whiskey Black finish is complemented by soothing green walls. New oak flooring expertly stained to match floors in the rest of the house, and all new stainless appliances, form an inviting aesthetic. The focal point of the room, a custom multi-colored, mosaic backsplash in hand-painted tiles above the cooktop, was a design collaboration between the homeowners and Traditions in Tile. The new Kitchen matches both the vibrant lifestyle of intown living and cozy feel of this charming cottage. The homeowners now enjoy ease of cooking and casually entertaining friends in their new space, thoughtfully recreated by Distinctive Remodeling Solutions.

AO Design Studio is a leader, both locally and nationally, in kitchen and bathroom design. Matthew D. Rao, CKD created RAO Design Studio to offer the most comprehensive design process available, taking a “whole-room” approach to the kitchen and the bath. The process starts with understanding the clients and their needs. Matthew then brings his mantra of synthesizing form and function to the process, creating living environments that are at once beautiful, functional, and enduring. His approach is comprehensive: from the first notion of how to organize the space to offering choices for all finishes in the room. Mathew’s work is frequently featured in national publications. His projects have won numerous awards, including the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Kitchen of the Year (7 times, 2009 Grand Prize Winner) and the SubZero-Wolf Kitchen Design contest (4-time regional winner).

ieMatic Möbelwerke, or Furniture Works, is one of the pre-eminent kitchen brands in the world. Since the first fitted SieMatic kitchen caused a sensation in 1960, the company has been a leader in design, quality, engineering, and in the very conception of what is the modern kitchen. Founded in Germany in 1926, this third-generation family business has introduced innovations such as the first handle-free kitchen, the classic raised panel white lacquer kitchen, the re-invention of the Shaker kitchen as a modern classic, and the recent introduction of BeauxArts, a clean yet classic interpretation of the American kitchen of the early 20th century.
Environmental responsibility has always been a quiet part of the RAO Design Studio ethic, but rare are the occasions when clients demand it. Matthew Rao jumped at the chance to design this LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified kitchen and wet bar that Matt and Jennifer Liotta required. Working as a team with architect Bryan Russell, interior designer Michael Habachy, builder Alan Cablik and the Liotta’s, the group met weekly for two months to evaluate the look and function of this compact kitchen and how it related to the architecture of the home. The design is a “sculpted” mass of wood that reveals a niche for the kitchen. Wenge veneer contrasts with the warm white cabinetry. Rao proposed SieMatic for its design, engineering, and reliability, as well as its environmental aspect. The kitchen, open to the rest of the house, is framed by tall pantry cabinets. Rao, using integrated Miele appliances, created a visual “block” out of the ovens, warming drawers, and coffee machine, minimizing their visual impact while creating a culinary statement. The 3/8 thick granite slab countertop features an eating bar, sink and induction cooktop. The long wet bar, open to a large interior courtyard, meets the client’s need to support large-group entertaining. Layers of lighting, including low-wattage halogens and linear “L” shaped florescent fixtures, create different moods. The wall washing florescent is dramatic while the halogen lighting provides enough light to work and gives a brightness to the room.

A few years ago, our clients came to us to help them design and build out their attic to give them a 2nd story in their Poncey Highlands home. This past year they were ready to redo their small overworked kitchen. The couple’s expressed needs for the project were very specific- create a family friendly eat-in kitchen with a large central island or peninsula space and improved views to the rear yard. (Take a peek out the back door to see a beautiful rear yard and great view) Creating and maximizing ample storage in a relatively small kitchen was also a priority with a growing young family. The location is a small in-town lot with narrow side yards. A key requirement was to take better advantage of the unrealized downtown skyline view from the rear of the home. An additional request was to consider the possibility of a future family room addition and how the kitchen would relate to that space. The “before” kitchen which had been renovated at some point in the past- though a generous galley style layout – was not quite wide enough to accommodate an island, nor did it incorporate any casual dining areas, a problem for a family with young children. The work zones were split across the wide walkway. Because the kitchen also functions as the primary route to the rear yard from the rest of the house – as such, it was a must to provide a dedicated zone for circulation which would not conflict with the primary work space in the kitchen. A “storage spine” was created by relegating features such as the pantry and refrigerator to the remaining interior wall of the space while allowing for windows to be located on the exterior walls without sacrificing much needed storage. This establishes the circulation zone as a path through the kitchen but not in the way of the kitchen Our clients chose top of the line appliances with Subzero and Wolf, as cooking is a passion. We designed in the new refrigerator drawers to the island to make access for small children. Diamond cabinetry was chosen in two colors providing a contrast with the island in black. Some great storage accessories are not to be missed. Be sure to ask about all the special technology designed into the kitchen.

HAMMERSMITH, INC.
A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N This kitchen was part of a larger scope of work that required adding a small addition to the rear of this 1920’s historic Druid Hills home. Their dream kitchen, finally realized after kids finished college, needed to include multiple workspaces, a planning area, butler’s pantry, pantry and room to accommodate triplet sons, a daughter and their growing families. The first challenge was that the kitchen gracefully tie into an existing living space without overwhelming it. This would be no easy feat considering the amount of workspace, storage and appliances that were required. The second challenge was that our clients actually cook. They cook for themselves, for family, for friends, and for neighbors. More food is prepared in this kitchen than your average diner. This kitchen had to feel historic, cozy and connected while providing ample storage, great working areas and ultimately had to look great. Beyond the function and questions of scale we wanted to create an aesthetic that complimented the home and their style. An updated version of a 1920’s kitchen seemed like a perfect fit. Simple shaker style cabinets were chosen with an inside bead painted on the perimeter. A small mosaic brick stack tile on the backsplash and gorgeous leathered granite give the sense of age. The stained island was designed to look like furniture. It provides abundant workspace and functions as both a connecting element with the adjacent living areas and a physical block to keep guests out of the working area. In order to minimize the scale of this kitchen, the range and associated workspaces were tucked into a large dramatic niche. The kitchen is equipped with a warming drawer, a 36” built in refrigerator, and four ovens. The four ovens were achieved by combining a 48” range and double wall ovens. The full height pantry storage, and a desk area are hidden around a corner and behind the existing fireplace. This area also provided a second hidden dog entry to the backyard. A butler’s pantry was added between the formal dining room and kitchen for additional storage and to facilitate buffet or seated service. The result is the perfect balance between flow and function, age and beauty.

This truly sets us apart as your remodeler of choice. Our approach allows Home Forge to deliver total quality work on a well defined and concise schedule. We are happy to put you in touch with our past clients so you can assess for yourself these two key elements of our service. Home Forge can help you with your project, from single room renovations all the way up to large home additions.
This is the newly designed kitchen of Martha and Sean Cook. Martha and Sean approached Home Forge Remodeling to recreate their kitchen and to better incorporate it into both the adjacent living room and to the future outdoor entertainment area in their yard. Being a gourmet cook, Sean also needed to bring functionality and style together. The result is this striking contemporary kitchen, complete with new French doors leading out to the planned outdoor kitchen and pool area as well as a much improved overall functionality, beautiful finishes and dramatic lighting. The kitchen was originally divided into two distinct areas separated by a peninsula. Home Forge reconfigured the space to unite the breakfast area with the main kitchen. A seldomused butler’s pantry was eliminated to create more useable space, and a wall separating the kitchen from the living room was removed to bring in light and unite the two rooms. The new kitchen features a large island as its centerpiece and a strategically placed bar that work extraordinarily well for both cooking and entertaining. The central cooking area allows for easy accessibility to large and small appliances, while the entertaining area wraps around it and allows interaction with guests and family. Warm wood tones on the cabinetry soften the room and are enhanced by natural cork flooring. Mink-colored glass brick backsplash tiles add a dynamic element to the space, which is all set off with functional and interesting lighting. Hidden under-cabinet fixtures, recessed ceiling lighting and the highly-styled, remarkable “artichoke” pendants are also elements that make this kitchen unique, both as a design and renovation project and as a reflection of the Cook family’s lifestyle.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N When the homeowners came to CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio to remodel their kitchen, they had some definite ideas in mind. With a young child to keep an eye on and another on the way, the kitchen had to be family-friendly and efficient, but also elegant for social gatherings. One of the first priorities was to improve the layout of the kitchen for efficiency. The awkward L-shaped peninsula was replaced with a large island—designed to serve a multitude of functions. Not only does it direct traffic flow, but it divides the kitchen area into work zones. The clean up center (sink, dishwasher and trash pullout) conveniently faces the cooking zone, a desk area with file space at the rear is at a lower height for messages or homework, and a raised bar with seating accommodates snacks and visiting friends. Plenty of storage was provided for with tall cabinets, lots of drawers, pullouts for spices and bakeware and tray dividers. There is even storage space incorporated into the hood. Take note of the new corner pantry—concealed behind doors to match the cabinetry. The layout is now a cook’s dream with all appliances out of the traffic pattern and within easy each. A distinctive feature of the kitchen is the coffered ceiling. While trying to determine how best to integrate a structural beam that ran the length of the room into the design, the wife said, “Why not a coffered ceiling?” It perfectly disguises the beam and brings an interesting architectural element to the space. Custom pendant lights made of aged tin are suspended from the ceiling. The creamy painted finish on the inset cabinetry is elegant and rich and is accented with handmade glazed porcelain beveled tiles behind the cooktop. Granite countertops with a brushed finish are a pleasant tactile counterpoint to the smooth surfaces. The ceramic tile floor in varying sizes is easy to clean, and its look of stone lends a French farmhouse feel to the kitchen.

A B O U T T H E K I TC H E N The homeowners desired to remodel the 1970’s kitchen area that was limited in space for the needs of a growing family. The three floors of the house were measured and drafted in order to have a plan of the house and a place to begin our many sketches, studies, drawings and options for the owners to consider and approve. Thelen developed an extensive program that included a two story addition the allowed additional kitchen and breakfast area, screen porch and deck on the main floor. On the lower, walk-out level, an additional bedroom was built and revisions to the bath, family room/ playroom and wet bar were made. Other revisions were made to the remaining first floor laundry, dining room, living room and foyer and the bedrooms and baths on the second floor. The design of the exterior addition on the rear of the existing house was accomplished with large curved top windows and French style doors. This provided additional natural light and improved the view of the large landscaped rear yard. The new French doors on the lower level opened to a stone patio and pond with “under cover” ceiling of the deck for exterior covered patio area. Mouser Custom Cabinetry with Burnished finish established the décor for the much larger separate functioning areas for preparation, cooking and cleanup that included a morning bar with microwave. A raised level breakfast bar with stacked stone lower “knee wall” provided a study or “help prepare food” area for the younger family members. Considerable revisions were made to the plumbing, heating/air conditioning and the electrical systems to update the house to meet the needs of the family. Oak wood floors were added in many room and existing wood floors refinished. Wallpaper and stippled ceiling were removed and smooth drywall installed. New door trim, casings, base and crown were added and the majority of the house was custom painted. This sizeable job was accomplished while the family lived in the house during the remodeling process.

From founding some of the mainstays of the community – like the Atlanta Speech School and the Atlanta Children’s Shelter – to supporting already established organizations like the American Red Cross, the Junior League of Atlanta has had a monumental impact on the Atlanta community for more than 90 years. This year alone – either by raising money to support JLA efforts or working directly with community organizations – active members will collectively give more than 120,000 volunteer hours to improve the lives of women and children in metropolitan Atlanta. The commitment and compassion of each member is what makes the Junior League of Atlanta possible. Here are stories of two of the thousands of members who help keep the League strong. To learn more about how you can make a difference, visit www.jlatlanta.org. The American Red Cross has been Donna Gallaher’s placement since 1998. Through the Red Cross, Donna says she’s gained valuable experience in leadership and crisis management...and a clearer perspective on what’s really important in life. She says seeing people who have truly lost everything in a disaster makes you appreciative of what you have. Donna especially likes the “hands on” approach to the Red Cross assignments in the community. She recalls one special experience where she played a vital role in reuniting an elderly man with his family after Hurricane Katrina. Donna was working as the shelter manager at Georgia Tech when she noticed an evacuee who was depressed, despondent and alone. She gathered some basic information from him and was able to locate and eventually reunite the man with his daughter from Arkansas. Donna says this is just one of the many times she’s witnessed a joyful moment stem from a tragic experience.
Connie Land Norris started with the League in 1999 as a provisional. She currently serves as chair of the Nearly New Leadership Committee; a placement that she’s especially proud of each day. The Nearly New Shop is the League’s largest fundraiser. Connie credits her committee for making it run smoothly and efficiently. On a personal note, Connie says she’s benefitting from this placement by learning how to run a small business without the financial obligations of owning one. Connie says she initially joined the JLA for networking opportunities but soon realized that being a member provides much more. She’s made great friends and likes working with the strong and accomplished women in the JLA.

ATLANTA STYLE NOW This winter, we took an already amazing home—a gorgeous William T. Bakerdesigned estate on tony West Wesley Road in Buckhead—enlisted the help of 23 of Atlanta’s top designers, and turned it into the most stylish living space ever: Christmas House. Along with a guest house, media room and wine cellar, our show house had 11 bathrooms and an artists’ atelier. World-class art and amazing furniture filled the spaces—all of which, sadly, had to be returned after the house closed. But not before we threw parties, raised money for charity (the Alliance Children’s Theatre), hosted book signings and a lecture series, and showed it off to more than 6,000 visitors.

MASTERING THE MIX Even in a show house like this one, Susan Ferrier found that she needed to satisfy the client. “The room became my client,” she says. “It gave me the parameters when I walked into the space.” For instance, she says, the volume of space was gorgeous; thus, the designer made grand gestures with a large bed and sofa—even the lantern illuminating the room. “There’s something dramatic on every wall,” Ferrier explains. “It creates movement and carries you through the room.” At the same time, the designer wanted to balance the masculine and feminine aspects of the room. An organically shaped table on one side of the bed, for instance, is the perfect counterpart for a square, modern version on the other. That same approach to balance carried right into the master bath where, given an immaculate framework by J Gladney of Renaissance Tile & Bath, Ferrier added sheer white drapery behind the substantial tub, softly filtering the room’s natural light. “The white marble [space] had a strong edge that called to be warmed,” she says. Thus, a little romance was in order. A large-scale crystal chandelier, with contrasting black shades, ties back to the room’s black-and-white photography, creating another grand gesture in the process. The inspiration for the study actually came from the house itself. “The architecture and finishes—from the gray shingles to the beautiful stonework—felt warm and inviting, casual yet refined,” explains designer Bob Brown. The impeccably tailored room speaks to no one style or period; an antique chest and mirror, for example, are juxtaposed with mid-century pieces. Antique silver candlesticks are right at home next to the rustic rock fireplace surround. Even the fabrics are “oΩ” just enough to make it special; the raisin-colored slipper chair, turquoise lamp and almost-charcoal walls feel fresh yet timeless. And the crowning touch? As in much of Brown’s work, it’s the well-appointed art. “The wall-hung works are very white and simple in context,” he says. “In a gallery, you would most likely see them against a white backdrop but we knew they would have a very interesting eΩect hung on the dark walls. Because of the contrast, they almost glow.” BOB BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN

WARM RETREAT Designer Amy Morris wanted to create a classic retreat that warmed the senses, too. “It needed to be a room that guests would want to come back to again and again,” she says. “The goal was to not make it overly masculine or feminine—just clean, soft and sophisticated.” Painted a warm gray, the room feels even cozier thanks to curtain panels draped from the iron bed; the lengths of linen warming up the gray with rich chocolate and camel hues, echoing the nearby window treatment. The sophisticated neutral scheme is the perfect backdrop for urns, Biedermeier pieces and architectural elements, all of which ground the room securely in the classics. AMY MORRIS, AMY D. UNEXPECTED PLEASURE The bed was the obvious focal point in this guest room but, to get one with just the right scale, Jim Howard came up with a custom design. With its graceful curves and romantic cornice, the sleeping spot echoes the shape of the gabled ceiling. Meanwhile, upholstered walls feature a daring zig zag pattern where a vertical stripe would have been more expected. “The space had such a strong vertical direction with the angled gabled ceiling,” says the designer, “so the fabric choice wasn’t bold; it was obvious!” The classic blue-and-white scheme is tempered by rich woods, many of the furniture pieces being Howard originals. Together with personal touches such as framed portraits, they create an ideal place for retreat. JIM HOWARD, JAMES MICHAEL HOWARD INC.

LIVING LARGE To the credit of designer John Oetgen, the spacious living room is a relaxed, comfortable space with European sophistication. Anchored by playful Moroccan rugs, it features a baby grand piano at one end of the room, surrounded by six green leather chairs; the seating pieces can be gathered ’round for an impromptu concert or whisked elsewhere in the room as needed, while a structured settee and velvety green chairs form a main conversation group. Meanwhile, two 18th-century Aubusson tapestries add richness and softness in lieu of curtains, which were eschewed to showcase the view. “Every room in your home should make you smile,” says the designer, who—to that end— accessorized with a flock of antique Chinese parrots and even a chimpanzee bust. HORSE SENSE Imagining this house to be like a Hamptons retreat, Suzanne Kasler designed the mudroom as a casual landing place for an active family. In that scenario, outdoor activities such as horseback riding would be standards of daily life, so equestrian motifs infuse the space with the essence of this classic sport. Framed prints of equine tack, part of the designer’s new collection for Soicher Marin, provide the starting point while Hermès riding accessories, rustic iron hooks and cognac-colored reins carry the theme forward. With its silvery blue walls, the keeping room was designed to accentuate this home’s relaxed-yet-stylish way of life. The result? It’s quintessentially “chic and modern, but at the same time classically comfortable,” says designer Suzanne Kasler. A deft mix of linen-covered seating, Greek key “X” benches—covered in the same cognac leather as a pair of barrel-back chairs—and timeworn antiques simultaneously lend comfort and style. But a jaguar-print rug from Kasler’s collection for Safavieh ups the intrigue, adding visual interest to the subtle scheme. Meanwhile, an oversize console propped with favorite design books, decorative objects and prints provides a captivating place to rest the eye, as a modern mobile by artist Julie Frith provides the perfect foil for the space’s more organic textures.

TAKING A CUE Design Galleria’s Mary Kathryn Timoney opted for crisp white cabinets throughout the kitchen, using simple recessed-panel doors with applied molding within the frames. “Crisp white and gray/blue are classic colors found in this type of architecture,” she points out, noting that the gray/blue of the walls is directly related to the home’s cedar shake exterior. The only exception to the all-white cabinetry is the generous island; finished to blend seamlessly with the antique heart pine floor, it appears less imposing in the process. Function and flexibility were always top of mind; there’s an organizational tool for every conceivable purpose. Still, the designer never lost sight of her firm’s mantra that kitchens are the “children” of a home’s architecture and interior design. “While simplicity, color palette and symmetry were features of the ‘parents’ that were mimicked, a more subtle trait that the ‘child’ took on was the ‘X’ pattern found in the mullions of the glass cabinet doors,” Timoney explains. “As you approach the house, there’s a turret with mullions that create an ‘X’ pattern. By pulling that architectural detail into the cabinet design, there’s a beautiful synergy with the architecture of the home.” DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN & BATH STUDIO

PEACEFUL REPOSE

To create a truly comfortable guest room, one in which visitors would “relax and leave their troubles at the door,” Barbara Heath knew that she wanted a quiet color palette. The jumping-oΩ point was Jim Thompson’s No. 9 Collection, specifically the “Ersari” pattern used on the headboard and draperies. “The pencil sketch design on that fabric was so amazing,” she says. Plus, it played right into her plan to mix things up from a textural point of view. The fabric provides a soft counterpoint to the mirrored four-poster while, on the opposite wall, a Swedish Neoclassical armoire faces a George Smith bench upholstered in a No. 9 Collection “Topkapi”—each with its own stylistic take on the same blue hue. Likewise, on either side of the bed, contemporary Murano lamps are right at home atop antique Biedermeier dropleaf tables. “I wanted to exemplify how you can pair gorgeous antiques with fresh new items and provide new life to both,” says Heath. “Great style is easy when you have quality products. You can have a beautiful antique table. And you can position it next to something that’s much less significant. But when you put that table next to it, all of a sudden there’s a whole new presence for both pieces.” BARBARA HEATH, THE MERCANTILE

ARTISTIC APPROACH 100
This soulful studio is filled with sketches, maquettes and intriguing found objects, reflecting Beth Webb’s passion for and long history with art. Because the designer is a board member at The Florence Academy of Art, works from the Italian university’s staΩ and alumni—along with pieces from galleries in New York and Charleston—found their way into this masterful space. Because the room had “good bones” and an “incredible flow of natural light,” Webb chose to forgo painted walls and window treatments. The result is a starkly simple backdrop, a perfect foil for striking black-and-white sketches. BETH WEBB, BETH WEBB INTERIORS

PERFECT BALANCE
Shades of icy blue, silver and gleaming gold create Sara Steinfeld’s ideal mix of “hot and cold” in the dining room. The blue comes into play in the hand-glazed upper walls and ceiling, taking the space from ordinary to the realm of extraordinary. “I wanted to see how far I could push the contrast,” says the designer, who incorporated touches of gold in the unique chandelier, antique host and hostess chairs, a delicate étagère and even the Hermès “Attelage” flatware. Lest there be too much of a good thing, however, natural textiles such as mohair, sisal and silk linen—as well as a contemporary Deborah Butterfield sculpture and twig-framed bench—ground the room’s more opulent features. Finally, along the picture rail, modern photography brings the beauty of nature from the outside in. SARA STEINFELD, SARA STEINFELD LTD.

SIGNATURE STYLE
Combining three spaces into one inviting retreat, Jimmy Stanton’s upstairs lounge is the epitome of comfortable living. Soft linen fabrics in organic colors contribute to the relaxed aesthetic and give the seating a lasting quality; it can easily be updated with a quick switch of pillows. True to the designer’s signature style, the space features impactful pieces such the artful convex mirror. French doors open up to balcony seating that acts as an extension of the indoor space. Stanton also cleverly converted a small closet into an oΩice that houses a zinc-topped desk and metal bookcase. The dark gray walls give the diminutive space visual panache and a cozy, inviting ambiance. JIMMY STANTON, STANTON HOME FURNISHINGS

GREAT TASTE 106
The unique design style of Kay Douglass and Dixie Peeples was a perfect fit for this windowless space, which they turned into a stylish wine-tasting sanctuary. With six doorways to deal with, the first order of business was concealing the multiple entrances with black cotton fabric. From there, unexpected touches came together to create a hint of magic. Tying posts became stools, rural Chinese carrying packs served as light fixtures and an old drying rack was given new life as a mirror. Grounding the intimate room is a hand-painted floor that ties together the room’s distinct, yet indescribable style. “I love to push the envelope,” says Douglass. “But, ultimately, I wanted someone to walk in here and want to throw a dinner party.” KAY DOUGLASS INTERIORS/SOUTH OF MARKET

WINGED VICTORY
Clean, modern and oh-so-expressive, Mimi Williams’ upstairs gallery conveys the magic and imagery of angels—appropriate, she says, not only at Christmas but every day of the year. “The space just spoke ‘gallery,’ with a simple seating arrangement and one standout sculptural chair. I thought about a wing chair and then Christmas; I knew the chair had to be one with real wings, and the theme of angels took flight,” she explains. “I asked [artist] JeΩ Jones to do a series of angels and gave him complete artistic freedom; I let him fly with it, so to speak.” Those works, combined with other pieces by Jones, as well as some from the Bill Lowe Gallery and Williams’ personal collection, shaped the kind of distinctive space for which the designer is known. “The large piece with the blue feather made the room for me,” says Williams. “And JeΩ’s sculpture, of course.” MIMI WILLIAMS INTERIORS

RETROMODERN
Remember Rhoda Morgenstern’s apartment from the Mary Tyler Moore Show? That was the creative inspiration for the guest house bedroom, designed by talents Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos. Channeling Morgenstern’s Minneapolis aerie, the duo painted the once all-white space in Porter/Pittsburgh’s Wind Mill, then layered it with pieces from various styles and periods. A customized bed from IKEA is perfectly comfortable next to a mid-century chair—even a leather-clad bicycle from Hermès. And an assortment of personal collections puts the space even more at ease. Undoubtedly, Rhoda would feel right at home. MARK WILLIAMS AND NIKI PAPADOPOULOS, MARK WILLIAMS DESIGN ASSOCIATES

BRILLIANCE IN BLUE 110
For the home oΩice in the guest house, Courtney and Randy Tilinski eschewed the all-neutral palette for which their chic Westside shop, Bungalow Classic, is known. Instead, they opted for something bold; Benjamin Moore’s striking Newburg Green paint envelopes the room, resulting in an intimate space equally suitable for working or relaxing. A tufted sofa of the Tilinskis’ own design is perfect for afternoon naps while a wood-and-iron desk is at the ready for paying bills or checking e-mails. MOD CLASSIC In his scheme for the living room of the guest house, designer Jared Paul brought the luxe look of the Hamptons to West Wesley Road. With rough-hewn walls as a backdrop, Paul layered the space with a mix of styles and unexpected execution. A classic camelback sofa and a wingback chair are taken down a notch with the addition of linen slipcovers. Those pieces are juxtaposed with another classic, albeit a modern one: a Knoll table, centered beneath a contemporary chandelier from Artemide that shines a spectrum of changing colors. A large, colorful painting by Sarah Emerson epitomizes the room itself, which at ďŹ rst glance is whimsical but, upon closer inspection, is serious and meaningful, too. ROOM WITH A VIEW
In lieu of dark leather recliners with cup holders and vintage movie posters in the media room, Chip Cheatham, the president of PierceMartin, brought in unexpected textures in the form of wicker, rattan, bamboo and iron. Working with a chic animalprint carpet that had already been specified for the space, Cheatham chose a wicker sofa and slipper chairs—in red upholstery, no less—that added vigor and verve to the intimate space. Additional seating was on hand in the form of banana leaf floor pillows. “Birds in Peril,” a series by artist Tim Hunter, was hung in wall niches, creating the feeling of peering out windows to nature—no small feat considering the room’s windowless location on the terrace level. Tea for TWO Marcia takes a tasty trip down memory lane
With a Starbucks opening on every street corner— and a generation of kids addicted to green tea—is it possible that we have collective cultural amnesia? Of course, tea has always been a Southern staple. Who doesn’t remember their momma brewing it in a giant jar in the summer heat, with fresh sprigs of mint from the garden thrown in? But what is more indelibly etched in our (especially female) minds is the Tea Room. White-gloved ladies reposed in an oasis of velvet- or brocade-covered furniture draped with antimacassars to catch the odd gentleman’s Brylcreem (the less sophisticated settled for axle grease). Discrete café curtains blocked out the glare of the new, fast-paced world while, inside, sumptuous Southern fare was served: Sherry ChiΩon Pie, fresh deviled crab and ambrosia. Nothing says “I love you” more than a frozen whipped cream fruit casserole featuring miniature marshmallows. I want some now! We had legendary places like the old Frances Virginia Tea Room, Mary Mac’s, Woolrich’s and Rich’s (a few of which you could say were combination tea rooms and luncheonettes). I am nostalgic for those times Momma took me for tea. She was a model in those days and could navigate the tea rooms and department stores like a furclad Magellan. She would drop me oΩ at the Adrien Arpel counter for a make-up lesson before lunch as she laid waste like a modern-day Valkyrie. Her prey: the shoe department and its pre-spring sale. The boys would be whining about shopping, all the while punching each
other and shouting expletives that only adults should use. I could swear that the oldest one, at 12 years of age, once traveled downtown with a Pabst Blue Ribbon hidden in his navy blazer. One time, I was tarted up in some dreadful (to me) starched and pleated dress; I had been told that “no one of quality goes downtown in pants.” I dared to argue with Momma but thrusting a Seventeen magazine at her, holding up images of Twiggy in an Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuit, did no good. Her oversize, Jackie O-style, zebra-patterned sunglasses stopped me in my fast-talkin’ tracks. Her icy-blue Norwegian eyes brooked none of my wailing nonsense, so oΩ came the elephant bell bottoms that had been lovingly glittered by my Ronco Rhinestone and Stud Setter. I was amazed by her, dumbfounded into momentary silence as she laid out my stockings and patent leather shoes—and tossed me my own white gloves. The boys were nowhere to be seen. As she backed the Rambler out of the driveway I ran to get into the passenger seat. My own white gloves. We were going for tea! She chose me! Only me! This spring, trying to recapture some of that old Southern magic, I’m treating Momma to trips to all the tea rooms that I can find—and I’m even wearing a dress for the occasion.
