Sweet Home Colorado IN THE 1987 FILM Broadcast News, William Hurt’s character asks his fellow news anchor (played by Albert Brooks), “What do you do when your life exceeds your dreams? Aaron snidely advises, “Keep it to yourself. Normally I would heed this advice, and maybe I will tomorrow, but not today. I am thrilled to be the new editor in chief of Colorado Homes & Lifestyles magazine. I’ve been an avid reader of this wonderful publication for many years; to be taking the helm is an honest-to-goodness dream come true. I love Colorado. I first visited this beautiful state in 1984. During that trip I met a charming young native named Chris. I’ve been in love with the boy and the state ever since. And I love home design magazines. Maybe you recognize my name; several years ago I was the managing editor of Mountain Living magazine, CH&L’s sister publication. If you don’t, then I look forward to meeting you, chatting with you and hearing about what you’d like to see in upcoming issues of CH&L. But let’s get to the issue! It’s our Bed & Bath Issue, filled with dreamy ideas for transforming those quiet spaces to which we escape after long, busy days. We’ve scouted some great furnishings and linens to get you started in creating a beautiful bedroom (page 17) as well as cool new gadgets designed to help you get a good night’s sleep (page 31). And, of course, we’re bringing you our Bath of the Year winner, a stunning, luxurious sanctuary that’s sure to inspire. Finally, who doesn’t feel better when they’ve got a well-designed, organized closet? Turn to our back page for expert tips on how to get your own in order. And if you feel like your closet is beyond help, do not despair. We’re teaming up with Closet Factory Colorado to bring you our “From Messy to Marvelous Closet Makeover contest. One lucky winner will get a complete closet do-over. Go to coloradohomesmag.com/ClosetMakeover for the details. Happy Spring!

SPRING BRINGS THE URGE TO get organized, and we know just the person to help: Durango resident Jenny Newcomer, the visionary behind LobotoME, a line of paper products made entirely from Colorado materials. Newcomer created her first batch of weekly planners as a new mom with a serious need to stay organized. She gave the extras away as gifts, and friends wanted more. A business was born. Now you can find her cheery products— notepads and planners, all printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks—at The Container Store, as well as at smaller local boutiques. lobotome.com.

DESIGN WITH A CONSCIENCE.

The days of pretty for pretty’s sake are over. Now, more than ever, bathrooms need style with substance. TOTO bath fixtures save money and water with every use without losing an ounce of performance. Or sacrificing their good looks to do it. That’s world-class design with something more – real human value.

We find the rooms that feel just right— and tell you how to get the look

BY CAROLINE EBERLY PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MINTON REDFIELD BEFORE

WHERE IT BEGAN As the room that no one wanted to claim at the 2010 Designer Show House to benefit The Children’s Hospital. When designer Tonya Frank showed up on the scene of the house-inprogress, a 1929 gem designed by late architect Temple Buell, she was left with this dark, cramped space and just three weeks to work a transformation. But Frank, the owner and principal of Denver/Vailbased Dromma Designs, was energized by the tight turnaround: “They always say the last-minute things tend to be the most successful,” she says. A first glance told her the room needed to be bright-

ened and expanded, made to look bigger than it actually is. And she wasn’t afraid to do a little maneuvering to get there. Frank had the heavy-looking cabinetry and bar removed, the skylight sealed and ceiling lights installed. Then everything was slathered in a coat of fresh white paint—and kept open and airy. “I didn’t want to bring in drapery to cover any of the windows,” Frank says. “I was trying to bring the outside in.”

and crisp pillows and benches), but she ended up tempering the look with comfortable, natural materials that feel at home in Colorado: a textural jute rug, a twiggy side table and floor lamps, and organic-themed artwork by Denver artists Heidi Jung and Jeffrey Keith.

STYLE TIPS

How do you master a bold mix like this one? Fearlessly, the designer says. “Don’t be afraid to use color and mix a lot of patterns together.” Find that audacity here in the pairing of sleek orange lamps and a rustic table, or the python-skin-covered side table pulled up alongside a lounge chair upholstered in a floral print. From the result, you’d never know the designer pulled it all together so swiftly. “Most people came and relaxed here during the show home,” she says, which proves the design’s success: though it makes a statement, it’s livable and inviting.

Our noisy lives can make it difficult to just...rest. A crop of new high-tech gadgets help you get those eight hours— and rise feeling fresh

IT’S NO SECRET that Americans have a little trouble sleeping. In a 2010 poll by the National Sleep Foundation, only 42 percent of us said we get a good night’s sleep every night (or almost every night), and nearly a quarter of us fessed up to using some type of sleep medication in the course of a year. What gives? We could, perhaps, partly blame the technology that keeps us plugged in and connected around the clock. But here, we bring you technology that might help you do just the opposite: unplug and unwind.

How do you “turn off” your day when you barely made a dent in the to-do list? Instead of popping a pill, opt for a device that can help you relax naturally. Veteran gadget retailer Brookstone offers the Tranquil Moments Sleep Sound Therapy System. Available in both home and travel sizes, this clean-lined machine will lull you to sleep with one of 12 digitally recorded nature sounds (crickets or rain, anyone?). Or coax all of your senses into relaxation with Gaiam’s Aroma Diffuser Elite. The fragrance of natural essential oils (released by an aromatherapy diffuser), calming light and nature sounds all help you tune out pressing thoughts.

sweet dreams Maybe your struggle isn’t going to sleep—it’s staying asleep. Factors such as noise, light or room temperature can disrupt sleep patterns, as can lifestyle choices like diet and exercise. If you require a pitch-black room for dreamy sleep, invest in roomdarkening shades or curtains, perfect for those who must sleep during the day (Motorized Shades Denver has extensive options). Or go simple and stylish with a sleep mask from Lafayette-based Bona Notti, made of washable silk and hypoallergenic cotton and available in more than 45 designs. To really uncover how you’re sleeping, try this slick little gadget: the Sleeptracker by Gaiam. It looks like a wristwatch, but uses biofeedback

Trade in your loud, jolting alarm clock for one that uses softer, less jarring sounds to rouse you (and looks a lot better, too). Leave it to Danish retailer Bang & Olufsen to develop one of the sleekest, least intrusive alarm clocks on the market. The BeoTime Alarm Clock, designed by Steffen Schmelling, not only looks chic and delivers what you’d expect from an alarm clock, but it syncs with other Bang & Olufsen products in your home, turning off the television or stereo after you’ve fallen asleep. Don’t want to get tripped up by something too high-tech? Boulderbased Now & Zen offers a line of Asian-inspired clocks that use gentle acoustics. The Zen Alarm Clock features a subtle Tibetan bell-like chime that strikes with increasing frequency over a 10-minute period, while the Zen Timepiece sounds off using a brass bowl gong. Apple junkies will love the TimeCommand Alarm Dock from Stem Innovation. Just download a free app on your iPod, iPhone or iPad, load your device into the dock, and watch its screen display a customizable alarm clock that can even dim your bedside lamp in the evening and turn it back up in the morning. Find it at any Apple store or at apple.com.

he first thing guests see upon arrival at David Jacobs and Jean Conway Jacobs’ north Boulder home is an iron gate with an imposing black widow spider embedded in it. The symbolism is not lost on those who know Jacobs, founder and former owner of Spyder Active Sports, an upscale line of racing and recreational ski apparel. The black widow is the company’s logo, inspired by the contours of the padding on its original 1970s racing pants, which resembled a spider. “I’m a brand junkie,” Jacobs says, “and I realized that the edgy elegance of a black widow was unforgettable.” Of course people who know Jacobs well also know he’s afraid of spiders. But a logo’s a logo. And where better to put it than on the gates to his five-acre spread where he and his wife, a communications consultant and psychotherapist, built a new custom home. “We bought the land in 2005,” says Jacobs—the year after he sold the successful business he’d started in 1978. At the time, they lived across the street from what had been ranch land. When the owners of the ranch decided to subdivide the property, the couple jumped at the chance to buy a five-acre parcel.

(above, right) A racecar driver and aficionado, Jacobs displays his collection of vintage cars in a garage framed by the largest plate-glass window ever made in Colorado. The cabinets are appropriately painted Ferrari red. (opposite) Few hosts offer a setting as dramatic as this dining room, where guests look across the courtyard to Jacobs’ prized possessions.

Though they’d never built a house before, they knew what they wanted: a home that maximized the views, a dining room that accommodated large family gatherings, and a show garage for the six vintage race cars Jacobs takes to competitions all over the world. He wanted the garage to be visible from the dining room so that during dinner parties the spotlighted cars would create drama for guests. Working with architect John Mink and designer Meg Jonsen, the couple was open to suggestions. Mink, a proponent of Prairie-School architecture, immediately envisioned a low-slung house with a roofline that mirrored the hills behind it and a presence on the site that seemed organic. The (opposite, top) Built in the Prairie School style, the home’s baked enamel roof mimics the hills behind it. Four stone chimneys appear to anchor the house to the land. (opposite, bottom) In the transition from pool to house, symmetry is key. The outdoor kitchen (to the left) sits under a 16-foot overhang, allowing for nearly year-round use. (left) Even though Jacobs is an arachnophobe, he loves his company’s logo, which graces the entryway. (below) The great room is framed by alder columns that also frame the view of the Flatirons beyond. Conway Jacobs’ one concession to her husband: a TV above the fireplace. (His concession to her: the 75-foot lap pool.)

(opposite) The couple entertains often and the kitchen is a cook’s dream. Conway Jacobs wanted two smaller islands rather than one long one so she wouldn’t have to “run laps around it.” The sink is situated in the corner where two windows meet, looking out onto a spectacular view. (above) Thanks to stainless-steel legs, the kitchen islands appear to float. White eucalyptus wood under the granite tops contrasts with the walnut floors.

couple agreed with his exterior vision, but they didn’t want a true Frank Lloyd Wright interior, which they felt would be too dark and woody. Mink sited the house in the northwest corner of the lot—not only to maximize the couple’s own views of the Flatirons, but also to preserve the neighbors’ vistas. The site was also lowered five feet so that from the busy road nearby, only the home’s roof shows. “We didn’t want to offend the foothills,” Jacobs says. The horizontal exterior gives way to a soft contemporary interior, which, in spite of its 8,400square-foot blueprint, feels warm and intimate. “We wanted rooms that felt comfortable for two people or 20,” Conway Jacobs says. True to their wishes, Meg Jonsen made sure each room stands as a unique space, defined by custom rugs and intimate arrangements of bespoke furniture. Curved alder soffits soften the horizontal lines that frame each exterior view. Coved ceilings offer indirect lighting, and at night the rooms take on a warm glow against the dark skies. Much of the home’s greatness is subtle rather than over-the-top. The walls are a creamy Venetian plaster, which was applied by hand with a trowel, a process that took nearly four months. The walnut floors are warmed by radiant heat; the glass-to-glass corner windows (a la Frank Lloyd Wright) frame beautiful scenes; granite and onyx surfaces add elegance. “My father taught me to buy the best I could afford,” Jacobs says. This house is a testament to that advice.

The couple lives in about 5,000 of the 8,400 square feet. (The seven-car show garage and the studio and two guest suites that sit above it take up a considerable amount of the remaining space.) “Each room we use is so beautifully arranged, so warmly lighted, so comfortable,” says Conway Jacobs, “that one friend said our home was like being at the St. Julien Hotel [in Boulder], only cozier.” For Jacobs especially, the home allows him to enjoy his “toys”—the cars he stations there when he’s not traveling to races. (His vintage 1966 Lola T 70 was once owned by Parnelli Jones; his 1968 Alfa Romeo T 33 was driven by Mario Andretti at Daytona.) No longer are they tucked away in a storage garage; they’re part of the decor, close enough to enjoy daily. As it should be for a man who worked hard, plays hard and has a wife who appreciates his passion.

Sea Meets Sky A classic home with a modern twist melds coastal Maine influences and Colorado style

BY NANCY RICHMAN MILLIGAN

EMILY MINTON REDFIELD

After living in Massachusetts for many years, Nan and Chuck Procknow adjusted to Denver with a little help from their New England heritage. They brought with them family antiques and memories, and built a fresh new house inspired by summers spent on the coast of Maine. To execute their vision, the Procknows hired architect Don Ruggles of DHR Architecture to design a two-story house in Greenwood Village that would have “lots of New England touches,” but would be “a bit more modern and clean-lined than a typical New England house,” says Nan Procknow, an interior designer, who collaborated with the architect. “We wanted to bring a little of the East coast with us, yet fit the Colorado landscape.” A hand-painted mural by local artists Laura Chappell and Barbara Fisher is based on photographed scenes of a Maine island where homeowner Nan Procknow’s parents once owned a home. An interior designer, Procknow was drawn to the lines of the draped-glass-bead chandelier. “It’s a perfect combination of old and new,” she says. The dining room buffet is a treasured family antique.

47

The 5,500-square-foot house is rooted in 17th-century shingle-style architecture, which is defined by a sense of intimacy, comfort and protectiveness. Ruggles took the bones of the style—which is somewhat relaxed, not totally symmetrical, but with well-proportioned rectangles and simple curves—and gave the look a modern expression. “We responded to the Colorado environment by opening up interior vistas and connecting to the outdoors. There was a conscious effort to relax the floor plan and let it flow and breathe,” he says. “More freedom is what the West is all about.” The rooms are spacious and open with high ceilings and large windows; the color scheme is light and fresh with hues that blend and flow from room to room. “I used a lot of pastels to bring in the light. Coming from the East coast, we always try to maximize light,” Procknow says. “We weren’t used to the bright light of Colorado. Even on rare gray days here, the house is light and cheery.”

48

(opposite, top) The formal pillars and arches of the home’s exterior speak to the shinglestyle architecture of coastal Maine, with large overhangs to protect the house from Colorado’s strong sunlight. (opposite, bottom) The homeowners enjoy fabulous sunsets and mountain views from the wide back porch. (above) Procknow designed the living room fireplace with traditional pillars and gray Pietra Cardosa marble. She bought the painting above the fireplace (by Frank Strazzulla) in Boston. The elegant Duncan Phyfe sofa, a family piece, and patterned rug from Azari Rug Gallery are antiques. (left) The 17.5-foot-high ceiling and exposed truss in the family room are a nod to Colorado architectural style. “We’ve taken the idea of a trussed room, like a church or barn, and scaled it to fit the house,” says architect Don Ruggles. Twelve-foot-tall bookshelves further dramatize the height of the room, and cherry-wood pocket doors separate the family room from the kitchen.

49

50

The blues and greens that once reminded her of the ocean now hint at the Colorado sky and evergreens. Soft green glass tiles comprise the kitchen backsplash and distinct accents of blue and green color the bathrooms. A hand-painted mural in the dining room is articulated in watery blues and greens. The color revs up in the couple’s daughter’s blue bedroom, which is a perfect reflection of old and new, Eastern Seaboard and Mountain West. A lighthearted toile wallpaper pairs with a bold, modern plaid for the bedspread and upholstery. The bed is a New England antique, but the views from the built-in window seat are of the Rockies. “The house fits our East coast sensibilities and our new location,” Procknow says.

The kitchen features beadboard ceilings and ten-inch cove moldings. Wide-planked natural cherry flooring is a warm counterpart to the painted, furniture-like cabinetry that Procknow custom designed. The 5-by-13-foot kitchen island countertop, built from mahogany with holly insets, is reminiscent of a ship’s deck. “It is incredibly durable and catches the eye,” she says. The Waterworks sanded glass backsplash tile looks like beach glass. “It has a subtle New England flavor and fits the backdrop of the mountains beautifully.”

51

(above) The master bathroom has a subtle softness that beckons you in. The walls are painted in a watery strié pattern and the cabinets are a pale Swedish blue. Glass knobs reflect light and Carrera marble countertops add a sense of luxury. The basketweave marble tile floors add texture. The tub and shower are separate, per the homeowner’s preference. “It’s inconvenient to step over the tub, so I don’t mix a tub and shower,” Procknow says. “I like a separate, freestanding shower with lots of glass.” (left) This second floor bathroom has classic New England style, with beadboard wainscoting and tub surround, crisp polished-chrome faucets, and a clean-lined, marble-topped vanity. Even the paint color, Benjamin Moore’s Kennebunkport Green, is a coincidental nod to Maine. The basketweave marble tile floor has a green inlay to match. (opposite) The couple’s daughter’s bedroom is as fresh as a summer day in Colorado. Designed around a crisp blue-and-white palette, the room features a mix of old and new with traditional toile wallpaper and a modern, oversized plaid fabric. The built-in window seat provides the perfect spot for reading.

Time to Retreat These distinctly different spaces prove your style can—and should—extend to your master bathroom. Let them inspire your own at-home sanctuary

Design Goals Designer Lane Oliver’s husband-and-wife clients had two

very different ideas for their master bathrooms: She wanted a bath and closet reminiscent of a French boudoir, while he wanted a masculine space with strong lines and rich colors. “I needed to create a flow between the two bathrooms,” Oliver says. “These spaces were very different in design, but needed to be equally opulent in style.” Perfect Touches In the wife’s French boudoir, Oliver dove into the details. She ordered moldings from a custom millwork shop and had them fauxfinished “to give depth and texture and make them look old.” Crystal beads trim the drapery; jewel-like knobs adorn the cabinets; a Nancy Corzine custom-upholstered chair shows off pearl buttons down its back, reminiscent of a beautifully tailored dress. And then there’s the sparkle, courtesy of smartly placed lights and mirrors. A birdcage chandelier by Laura Lee hangs above the tub, and sconces in the

55

vanity mirror reflect soft light throughout the room (thanks in part to mirrors inset in the cabinetry). In the dressing room, a Schonbek chandelier gives a regal glow with help from matching sconces. In his bathroom, Oliver achieved a library-like feel with dark wood tones and deep gray and blue hues. The tile pattern on the floor adds a strong geometric element—“good for a man’s space”—while the Statesville chair is reminiscent of a 19th-century English men’s club. In case anyone doubts wallpaper can be manly, these walls look perfectly masculine in a print from SJW Studios. 56

Tricks of the Trade “There are so many hard materials

and edges in a bath, it’s nice to soften the space by adding upholstery pieces,” Oliver suggests. “An ottoman or little chair would be lovely, but if those won’t fit, even a sumptuous rug will help.” Design Details

Design Goals With a site on Boulder’s western edge, the owners

wanted a home that would help them turn their backs on the city and connect to the outdoors. And the master bath would be no exception. Perfect Touches The house itself is half glass—but creating a bathroom with so much transparent material was a unique challenge. Enter architects E.J. Meade, Claire Jordan and Ken Andrews of Arch 11, who found clever ways to maximize the feel of the outdoors while maintaining the owners’ privacy. A wall of windows to the east stands opposite the recessed mirrors that hang above a floating vanity—“so you always have a view outdoors, even if you’re not looking out the windows,” Meade says. To protect the owners’ privacy, the team applied a thin band of translucent film on the windows at just the right height. Around the tub, large lift-and-slide windows open, giving the feel of bathing outside. There’s even an “unbelievable view from the loo,” Meade laughs. The palette of materials plays up the room’s connection to nature.

The bathing area is set apart by a jarrah wood platform—which allows a kind of celebration of the bathing ritual, Jordan says. The 6-by-12-inch Walker Zanger tiles surround the pièce de résistance, an Agape tub, and continue into the shower. A soapstone vanity tops custom-built jarrah wood cabinetry and is paired with Carrera marble wall tiles from Alfredo Salvatori’s Bamboo Collection. “We made the vanity as quiet and monolithic as possible,” Meade says. Tricks of the Trade To maximize your space and create a clean-lined look, consider how elements can serve double duty. For example, the bench outside the shower acts as a shaving stand within the shower. “As with any minimalist project, you can’t imagine how much detailing there is to make it look simple,” Meade says. Design Goal This Federal-style home in Denver’s Cheesman Park

neighborhood has some serious historic charm, which the homeowner wanted to preserve during the whole-house remodel, right down to the master bath. That didn’t mean she had to live with the room’s footprint, though, which was a bit too small to accomplish her design goals. So architect Steve Barsch expanded the space to accommodate a large steam shower, and interior designer Beth Armijo set to work choosing classic materials that feel sophisticated and appropriate for the home’s historic roots. Armijo opted for classic Calcutta marble for the shower and floors—“because it’s timeless”—and kept the cast-iron tub that was original to the home. Simple Kohler pedestal vanities flank the custom-built storage, and pretty glass knobs add sparkle. Perfect Touches Bathroom lighting is important. Here, Armijo paired overhead can lighting with wall sconces above the mirrors. “You want light from above as well as closer to your face,” she recom-

mends. Armijo opted for a soft blue for the walls. “We wanted the white to stand out,” she says, “but you can have contrast without a big, bold color.” Plus, using blues in a bathroom can change the look of your skin tone, Armijo points out, so selecting a subtle hue is best. Tricks of the Trade For an elegant way to make your bathroom more interesting, use the same material in different areas but change the size, shape or layout—the way Armijo used varying sizes of Calcutta marble on the floors and in the shower. That kind of restraint gives this bath its serene vibe. “I love the overall mood of this room,” Armijo says. “The elements come together to create a cohesive whole. It’s definitely a sanctuary.” Design Details

For prospective buyers, these tours are more than a window into individual homes for sale—they’re a way to take the pulse of a neighborhood. Home tours “give a feel for different communities,” says Vicki Pelletier, vice president of operations at the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver. “You can see how that community lives,

CLOSET FACTORY

you should know about

creating a high-style closet First, put fashion forward. “What I see in a lot of closets is a mishmash of clothes,” says Polly Lestikow, closet designer and president of Closet Factory Colorado, “because people don’t know what image they’re trying to portray.” Ask yourself what kind of image you want to create at work and in your casual life, then eliminate what doesn’t fit with that image. A professional organizer can help you wade through the oftentimes paralyzing decisions about what can stay and what should go, says Laura Leist, president of the National Association of Professional Organizers and author of Eliminate Chaos: The 10-Step Process to Organize Your Home & Life. “Resist the urge to say, ‘I might wear that some day,’ or ‘that will fit after I lose this 20 pounds.’”

If you’re building or renovating a home, involve a professional closet designer from the get-go. He or she will be able to look at your blueprints and tell you if your architect has carved out enough closet space and if it flows well within your bedroom suite. Most professionally designed closets are custom-fabricated off-site. That means you won’t have a carpenter tracking dust through your halls, and you’ll have access to a whole portfolio of options beyond your standard builder-grade shelf and rod. Decide if you’re going strictly utilitarian, lavishly ornate, or somewhere in between— and pinpoint your budget accordingly. (Lestikow has designed closets ranging from $800 to $50,000.) Think about how you like your clothes presented: Pants hanging straight or folded over? Sweaters in drawers or on padded hangers? Shoes tucked away or on display? These preferences will help your closet designer create a smart, efficient space that’s perfectly tailored to you and your wardrobe. Follow the latest trend in closet design and opt for a space that acts like a full-fledged dressing room—with storage for everything you need to get ready for the day—and looks as beautiful as the rest of your home.

Have fun with the “frosting.” Crown molding, jewelry drawers, furniture-like built-ins, belt and tie racks, ironing boards and mirrorencased cabinets are just a few of the extra touches that can take your closet from practical storage unit to luxurious haven. Understand the payoff. “Being organized saves time. It provides peace of mind. It allows us to wear all the hats we have to wear,” Lestikow says. You won’t lose time trying to unearth your favorite sweater or spend money on duplicates of items you already own. Once you get organized, stay organized. “Everyone’s definition of being organized is different,” Leist says. “Whatever ideal you chose to create for yourself, you need to maintain what that is. It’s not good enough to go organize your closet; you have to do the maintenance, the follow-up work.” —Caroline Eberly
