“We at Design Build Team are thrilled with NCI’s Sherpa program! Sherpa has assigned us our own personal assistant who posts several things every week and has written pieces using photos and other articles we have sent her. Also, being able to post to the blog ourselves has been amazing as we, on our own, can write pieces and add photos. Sherpa rocks!”

rom outside, the façade of Debbie Glassberg and Todd Nelson’s Kansas City home speaks a different language than other houses on the block. While its pedigree is
clearly industrial and modern, the house retains a mood of neighborly cooperation, set back from the street and properly proportioned for the city lot-and-a-half. The exterior’s light blue color almost recedes into the sky. But what immediately sets it apart is that the home is constructed of five corrugated-steel shipping containers — the exact type used to transport goods from China to U.S. ports — stacked two stories high. And the yard doesn’t require mowing, just harvesting of prolific herbs, lettuces and other edible vegetation. Inside, the mood belies the home’s rigid exterior. The expansive interior is playful, set in motion by a color palette
of airy coats of Tiffany Blue offset by white. “My car is this seafoam hue,” Glassberg says. “It’s a serene color that’s followed me throughout every house I’ve lived in.”

and photography, and objets d’art from around the world decorate the house and give it depth and a compelling sense of place. The dining and living rooms blend into one large space, and the European-style galley kitchen, which is Glassberg’s raw food laboratory, is efficiently designed with stacked cabinets and counter space to accommodate any task. Well-executed storage space is a trademark of the home. The pantry/cleaning closet, with floor-to-ceiling shelves concealed by a sliding door, reveals pullout drawers of neat culinary tools-of-the-trade. Bookshelves display entertaining vessels, porcelain sculptures and pieces collected from galleries and art fairs, and stacks of cookbooks. Another door opens to reveal a closet stocked with an arsenal of cleaning products. “Visible storage is imperative. It helps discourage overbuying,” she remarks. An intimate guest bedroom off the living room is more than inviting — it exudes the boutique vibe Glassberg has used as a figurative ribbon that ties the house together. A chandelier — one of many throughout the home from China — and an antique Asian daybed that has followed Glassberg around, punctuate the room’s decor. A full bathroom with subtle Swedish-Asian nuances is off the main living area. 34 • KCHANDG.COM
Glassberg and Nelson’s high-energy office is a long, narrow room at the back of the house that features two desks and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with prototypes of her toy, jewelry and gift design pieces. Doors open onto a deck that squirrels, birds and other urban creatures regularly visit. The proliferation of glazed windows throughout the home alludes to the dynamic environment outside. There is a wraparound deck on the home’s first level, two off the master bedroom and one off the main hallway on the second level. “It’s like a tree house,” she says. “You can sit anywhere in the house and see what’s going on in every direction. I’m an outdoor person, and the reality is you can’t be outside year-round with Kansas City’s weather. The glass walls and minimal window coverings are my

Bryce Gahagan, partner in GahaganEddy Building Company, says starting over is relatively inexpensive. “We can start fresh and build a better home than what was there previously,” he says, adding that he has seen a trend toward smaller homes that function for the client’s lifestyle, one that is focused more on quality than sheer size. “Even in the lower price ranges, we are seeing a trend toward higher-quality materials. When the scope becomes a major addition or a whole-house remodel, it may make more sense to raze the house and start over than to renovate. “For example, one client’s home had a shallow, unfinished basement plus a crawl space that took on some water, so there was always a slight musty smell. Even though the living areas would have been enlarged and modernized, there still would have been problems,” Wendlandt says. “At the end of the day, we have to look to see if the ends are justifying the means and if the client is getting what they want.” Robbie Smart with Prudential Kansas City Realty says that brand new homes have more appeal to some buyers because all they have to do is move in. “But sometimes a buyer can be hesitant to PLEASE TURN THE PAGE

Kathy Euston, Euston Kitchen Co. THE GOAL: To update an aging kitchen under budget and make everyone happy (and be done before the grandbaby arrived, which they did!). THE CHALLENGE: Keeping the project under budget even after adding a powder room and butler’s pantry to the plan as well as a fresh paint job. THE RESULT: One of the main updates to this 17year-old kitchen in Leawood was eliminating a twotiered island that separated the space. The butter yellow walls had to go as well as the white cabinets, trim and laminate countertops, all typical of a classic kitchen of the early ’90s. Changing to a warm, neutral palette, the walls are painted in a soft SherwinWilliams green called High Tea. “I love the palette,” the homeowner says. “For the first time in years, this is me.” The existing wall cabinets were replaced with custom cabinetry — complementing the antique hutch in the adjoining room — and painted the same color as the walls but with a black glaze.
The new custom-made maple island with a mocha glaze features a Venetian-treated granite countertop in the color Lido, soft-close drawers and seats four. Three bronze lantern pendants gingerly reflect off the countertop as additional can lights were added in the tinted ceiling, along with lighting above and below the cabinetry. The countertops around the perimeter shine in New Venetian Gold with a tumbled marble backsplash, decorative hood and gas cooktop. P h o t o s

Kira Satarova, Portfolio Kitchen & Home THE GOAL: To give the homeowner a sophisticated, fully equipped kitchen that’s multifunctional and open for socializing. THE CHALLENGE: Optimizing the small, odd-shaped existing staff kitchen and giving the illusion of a much larger kitchen by focusing on space plan design. THE RESULT: Although most people who knew what the kitchen looked like before the remodel are sure an addition was made, Satarova simply made the space feel larger by deleting a few walls and employing big features like wide cabinetry and 6- x 12-inch backsplash tiles. She also raised the cabinetry to the ceiling for visual height and paneled the dishwasher and fridge for a seamless appearance.
The Bertazzoni 36-inch range functions like a pro-range but has a more diminutive scale, and the ventilation is built into the cabinetry above to minimize distractions. The Jenn-Air French door refrigerator was set on a diagonal in the center of the new L-shaped space for interest and central accessibility. Satarova created other distinct zones like the bumped-out sink, butler’s pantry and bar. While each is a powerhouse in itself, they work together to make the space flow evenly. The outside wall is highlighted by a linear run of continuous counter prep space, transitioning gently at the end into the butler’s pantry with lighted glass-front cabinets. Opposite it, the bar features an ice maker and microwave. These two functions were purposefully located near the dining area so that conversations could be kept going while drinks get refilled. The classic-looking Hamptons design suits the Tudor-style architecture of the home. Satarova selected maple cabinets finished in white, anchored by shiny black CaesarStone countertops and Carrara marble backsplash. “It makes a clean statement but nods to the older look of the house,” she says.

| Sherwin-Williams’ Gentle Medley palette. |
“Antiques have changed a lot. They look different and they’re being used differently,” she says. Images of grandma’s house may appear in some people’s minds, but that’s far from how designers are using them. Moreover, new, young dealers in Europe are approaching the industry from a different viewpoint and aren’t afraid to experiment with changing finishes and fabrics. An antique is defined as at least 100 years old or more and has “patination,” a term that describes a finish that can only come from true age. Usually, the pieces are made by hand using hand-constructed nails. You can tell if it’s authentic by turning it over and looking at the straps and mechanisms as well as locating marks from tools. If the lines are too clean, be wary — it’s probably made by machine. For those still unsure how or where to incorporate antiques into their home, Kaminski poses an interesting question: Are you playing it safe? Don’t be afraid to mix contemporary art with antique pieces or antique art with contemporary pieces, she says. Doing what’s unexpected adds interest. The same goes for color. While neutrals remain a Midwestern favorite, influences from around the globe and previous eras are influencing the palette, according to Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams and another speaker 54 • KCHANDG.COM

The company’s color specialists reached out in many directions, digging into cultures near and far, old and new to create five distinctive palettes. First, they used

Think handmade, natural linens and organic dyes, big textures and tantric drawings. “Bold Invention” is the last of the latest and shows off its avant-garde personality with vibrating color. Think Brazil’s Carnival, cinema, “Avatar” and graffiti. The plethora of gorgeous colors available as well as a cache of quality heirloom pieces is enough to enliven our spaces while not overlapping our friends’ and neighbors’ styles. Set in Stone The outdoor living trend has permanently made its mark in our lives, with the outdoor kitchen quickly becoming the new heart of the home. The Kincaid family of Mission Hills knows this after completing their covered lanai last fall, not only sharing it with their friends and charity organizations but also with us on the following pages.

An extensive outdoor kitchen was the last piece needed to complete a Mission Hills couples’ privately enclosed — but often shared — entertaining space. DON AND PATTY KINCAID DECIDED
it was time to upgrade their outdoor living area, which already featured a pool, pool house and brick patio, just in time for one of their biggest events of the year — Catholic Charities’ Benefactors Party for the 2011 Snow Ball (see sidebar on next page). With numerous guests due to arrive for the party last November, the couple invested in a season-extending covered lanai with outdoor kitchen and wood-burning fireplace. Designer Chris Castrop weaved the new design in with the existing structures, orienting the lanai 90 degrees from the pool house. “We wanted it to be very open and not feel encumbering or overpower the site,” he says. “We also wanted to tie in the existing columns and keep the proportion down to human scale.” He even incorporated an arched transom window — matching that of the pool house — bringing in natural light to the new hangout for the Kincaids, their six children, grandchildren and grand dogs. When shopping for materials, Patty chose Jerusalem Stone, which Castrop says complements and lightens the original red brick. “Patty was her own interior designer,” he says. “She was instrumental in choosing the colors and materials for the space.” The actual kitchen is outfitted with Fire Magic appliances, including a refrigerator, sink, ice maker, cooktop, warming drawer and, Don’s favorite, the grill, with built-in lights and an automatic turn-off feature. “He is the grill master,” Patty admits. But those aren’t the only high-tech gadgets in this area: they can dim the lights, turn on the stereo and control surround sound at the touch of a button. Infrared heaters installed by builder Tim Churchman extends the time they can spend outside. The space was completed in September, and the Kincaid family has used it almost every weekend since (give or take a few snow days), whether it’s for breakfast and coffee in the morning or dinner and a glass of wine at night. “We just love it,” Patty says. “It adds a whole new dimension to being outside. We can all sit together with the luxury of being covered — it turned out better than I ever imagined.”

Austin, co-owner of Austin Iron Works, an ornamental iron and metalwork company in Kansas City, Mo. A custom metal fence is pricier than a pre-manufactured option, but the work is unique to each location. While a premanufactured fence typically comes in set panel sizes, a custom fence can be built to

accommodate a sloped terrain. “If it’s just privacy you want, you can go with wood, but if you want curb appeal, resale value and security, then an iron fence is the way to go. And the best iron fence is going to be site-specific,” Austin says. The one downside to a steel or wrought iron fence is its ability to rust if the paint

scratches. This makes the quality of the paint job very important. When it comes to style, fences can have pickets or rails spaced closer or farther apart. The post size also can vary depending on the height of the fence. Steel or wrought iron fences can incorporate elaborate visual qualities typical of French, Spanish or German ironwork, such as lyrical scrolls or repetitive patterns. Different spear point designs can be used to achieve different aesthetics. “The trend has been more contemporary for the last eight to 10 years, but we

are starting to see more old traditional scroll work and ornate rails come back,” says Terry Price, president and owner of Quality Ornamental Iron in Kansas City, Kan. It’s also important to think about fence color, Price adds. “A light color will show the dirt. You’re better off with black or a dark bronze paint

and a semi- or high-gloss finish, which will weather better,” he says. Some homeowners also choose to include a gate. In high-profile residences, an ornate gate can be a form of selfexpression. “With custom work, the gates are both functional and ornamental,” Austin says. There are many additional amenities available for motorized gates: cameras, video monitors, wireless opening devices, intercom systems, motion sensors and more. “One of the biggest trends is solarpowered gates and gate operators. They are generally of high quality and pretty reliable,” Bailes says. There are a few important things to consider when it comes to fence installation. First, check with your homeowners association for any specific requirements. “Certain neighborhoods require certain types of fencing, so get a list of those codes if they exist,” Price advises. It is also necessary to know the exact property line and the location of utility lines. “Sometimes the utility lines are exactly where the homeowner wants the fence,” Bailes says. Also determine whether the fence will go around any utility boxes to keep them in or out of the enclosed area. “If you have small children, you may want the boxes outside the fence,” Price suggests. And, if you have the option, Bailes advises having both sprinkler systems and landscaping done after the fence is installed. Last but not least, do some research on the types of products you are considering and get to know the manufacturers and their quality levels. “Make sure you know what your warranty covers,” Bailes says. “Anyone can say ‘lifetime’ warranty, but it’s what that warranty actually covers that really matters.” JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 • 63

aniya Nayak, star of HGTV’s Bang for Your Buck, Designed to Sell and the hot new series Destination Design, is an interior designer with universal appeal. She creates
affordable and inspired spaces that capture her clients’ individual personalities and imaginations while maintaining comfort and function. Nayak’s Boston upbringing was shaped by her fun-loving and creative family from India, and influenced by her father, a talented architect. Shortly after attending Boston Architectural College, Nayak started her design firm, Taniya Nayak Design, to fill a void that she saw in the design world. A large part of her company centers around helping people get “uninspired” homes ready for top-dollar sales through staging and minor renovations. When making improvements, she believes in distinguishing a home so that it stands out from the competition. Within the past year, Nayak was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The Rachel Ray Show and The CBS Morning Show. In addition, she has been profiled in People magazine, Everyday with Rachel Ray, Cosmopolitan and Family Circle magazines. Nayak will give presentations at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show at the Overland Park Convention Center February 25-27 at the following times:

This includes gas-burning inserts, firewalls and gas-burning containers. They offer the warmth of a fire, are easy to use and do not emit smoke. Fire features can significantly extend the amount of time spent outdoors. Hardscaping is one area with potential

to be entirely sustainable in the landscape. Unfortunately, it also has the potential to be harmful to the environment. Hardscaping refers to hard elements in a landscape, such as those composed of concrete, brick, stone or wood. A patio or deck is a hardscaped project as is a brick walkway, stone wall or wooden fence. It is important when selecting materials to check into their origin. It makes no sense to get hardscaping materials from China or Brazil if you want to attain a sustainable landscape. Permeable pavers, porous surfaces, reclaimed wood and repurposed items are readily available. Sustainable landscaping and gardening is a win-win situation. It reduces pollution and conserves natural resources. It also involves less maintenance, water and labor. Ultimately, it allows the natural beauty of a landscape to be the focus. The Greensman is just one of the landscape design companies that will be exhibiting at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show February 25-27 at the Overland Park Convention Center.

have a relaxing and enjoyable break from work, without the stress of packing, long automobile drives and airport layovers. The key element is to have or create a space that promotes and encourages family togetherness, interaction and relaxation. Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a great vacation. It might involve a spa atmosphere, camping and barbecues, or plenty of downtime and good books. Regardless, the word “retreat” is a good description. Creating a retreat area within the home might take some soul-searching and work, but the result will be a permanent retreat area for you.

Discovering Personal Design Style M
any things inspire a home’s interior style; more often than not, it’s not planned but just evolves. This can result in a
hodgepodge of styles that look chaotic and non-cohesive. The goal should not be to come up with a specific style, such as country, traditional or contemporary, but to find a style that is unique to the homeowners. A home can include many diverse elements that exude individual stylish design. Finding a design style can seem like a daunting task, but discovering it, according to Taniya Nayak, can be fun, and results can be phenomenal. Nayak is a star on HGTV’s Bang for Your Buck, Designed to Sell and Destination Design. She is an interior designer with universal appeal who creates affordable and inspired spaces that capture her clients’ individual personalities and imaginations while maintaining comfort and function. A good first step for discovering personal style, according to Nayak, is to take a look inside your closet. A closet that contains jeans and casual clothes most likely reflects inhabitants who are comfortable in a casual setting. Likewise, a closet with button-down shirts and tailored pants likely reflect an owner who favors a more polished interior style. The same can be said for bohemian clothes and colors, which might reflect a more eclectic design style. In addition to clothes style as a barometer to design style, textures and colors and preferred accessories are equally revealing. Decks Continue to Hold the Spotlight I
f you think decks are old news or that their popularity has waned, think again. A 2010 survey conducted by the American Society of
Landscape Architects (ASLA) found that decks are more popular than ever. A whopping 94.4 respondents said that their decks or patios were important to them. Even in a less-than-robust economy, homeowners want to create a sense of place for family and friends. Rather than taking expensive vacations, many homeowners are opting for improving their outdoor living space. And more than ever before, according to the survey, they inquire about design elements that reduce time and money. There was a time when the homeowner had a much simpler choice regarding materials used for a deck __ treated wood, cedar or redwood. Today, the choices are endless. In addition to woods and composites, aluminum, fiberglass, concrete and those made entirely from recycled materials have emerged. Maintenance of a completed deck can be timeintensive, depending on the chosen material, so choose a deck material wisely. Steve Folsom with Archadeck, a purveyor of decks, sunrooms and pergolas, says that for the last two to three years, PVC decking has emerged as a rival to wood composite decking. It is stain-resistant, easy to clean, and is available in a variety of colors and textures. CONTINUED ON FOLLOWING PAGE

f you’ve made the decision to update your home, before you hire a remodeler, ask if he or she is a member of NARI. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is a not-for-profit trade association
committed exclusively to the professional remodeling industry and homeowners. Kansas City NARI is the voice of the remodeling industry and is an ally to area homeowners, and members are experienced, ethical and professional. NARI suggests you ask some critical questions before you hire a remodeler, such as: How long have you been in business? Does your company carry workers’ compensation and liability insurance? Is your company EPA leadcertified? How many projects like mine have you completed in the past two years? May I have a list of references? Kansas City NARI represents remodeling contractors, subcontractors, product manufacturers, lenders and other allied businesses. Homeowners can check out the Kansas City NARI list of qualified members at www.remodelingkc.com. NARI members will be exhibiting at the Johnson County Home & Garden Show February 25-27 at the Overland Park Convention Center. When you stop and see them at the Show, pick up a 2011 Remodeling Guide.

There are no rules in regard to the shape of a deck, but before deciding, determine how you wish to use a deck, taking into consideration the shape and terrain of the outdoor space. Multilevel decks are great, if a budget permits, as they can establish separate areas for different uses. They also add visual interest to the overall structure. Construction is more complex with a multilevel deck; a professional deck builder can best determine how the deck can be supported adequately. No longer just a functional element, deck railings can be as unique as the homeowner. Aluminum, iron, wood or cable railings act as the crowning glory. Balusters are the supporting posts of a handrail and they no longer have to match the deck. Balusters can incorporate different woods or be metal, composite or glass. Since homeowners are using decks much like indoor spaces, they appreciate touches that give the deck a more “finished” look. Hidden fastening systems are one of the elements that can help the homeowner accomplish this. By hiding the screws used to secure flooring, the deck feels and looks much more like an interior floor as opposed to the rustic appearance that is often associated with a deck. The ASLA survey found that seating is important to 95.6 percent of homeowners, with grills, fire pits/fireplaces and ambient lighting being frequently requested also. One way to expand seating options on a deck to is incorporate permanent seating when the deck is being constructed. Although built-in furniture is less versatile, bench seats come in handy and add interest to the outdoor living space. “Regardless of the economy,” Folsom

& Fabulous! Filling
Honey-Roasted Pears with Bacon and Boursin Cheese Paired with 2009 Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc, Calif. 6 pears, quartered and cored 1 package Boursin 1 package cream cheese 1 cup honey bacon for pears
There’s definitely something to say about Danish cuisine…yum! Graduating from the Hotel and Restaurant School of Copenhagen, Chef Laurie Haney of Rumors Steakhouse has reached back to her roots, preparing a four-course meal that includes old and new favorite ingredients — bacon and beets, respectively. Story by Brooke Pearl
Photos by James Maidhof
THE MENU
Pickled Beets Cook beets in boiling water until soft and peel skin. (Use plastic gloves unless you like having purple fingers.) Make a pickling marinade for the beets: 1 cup sugar 1cup water 1 cup white wine vinegar ½ cup pickling spice salt and pepper to taste Bring all of the above to a boil. Strain over peeled beets. Cut beets into matchsticks and drain marinade. In a sauce pan, add beets, heavy cream, salt and pepper. Reduce by half. Serve the beets on top of the salmon portions with arugula and cream.
Mix cream cheese and Boursin together and set aside. Brush each pear with honey, lightly salt and pepper pears. Stuff each pear piece with the cheese mixture. Wrap with a half piece of bacon and use a toothpick to secure. Bake on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet at 350° for 10-15 minutes or until bacon is crisp.
Hot Smoked Salmon Paired with 2007 Dusted Valley Vintners Boomtown Pinot Gris, Wash. Clean scales and remove pin bones. Using a smoker on low heat, smoke the salmon for 10-15 minutes until done. (Chef Haney prefers applewood but use what you prefer.) Season the salmon with olive oil, salt and white pepper. Chill salmon and cut into 4-ounce portions.
|
Pork Loin Paired with 2009 Sean Minor Four Bears Pinot Noir, Carneros, Calif. (Leave the skin on the loin.) Score the fat 1/4-inch part from end to end. Put on a grate and place in roasting pan. Salt the roast heavily, making sure to rub salt in between the fat and meat. Put the roast in a cold oven, adding a ½ inch of water. Roast for 30 minutes at 325°. If the roast is uneven — and it will be — add peeled potatoes. After 30 minutes, crank the heat up to 350° for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on the crispy skin; if it gets too dark, put foil on top. Crank the oven up to 425° for 5 minutes to finish. Take the roast out and let rest, covered with foil for at least 15 minutes. Slice at the scoring marks and enjoy. NOTE: Times are approximate and may vary. Use a meat thermometer.
Red Cabbage Shred 2 whole red cabbages 2 cups red wine vinegar 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup water 4-5 cloves salt and pepper to taste Cook all ingredients in a large pot until cabbage is tender, 30-45 minutes. Browned Sugar Potatoes 1 pound small potatoes 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons butter Boil and peel potatoes. In a large skillet, melt butter and sugar, slowly forming caramel. Toss potatoes in and coat evenly. Season with salt and white pepper.
Crepes Paired with NV Domaine Ste. Michelle Extra Dry, Columbia Valley, Wash. 2 eggs ¾ cup whole milk ½ cup water 1 cup flour 2 ½ tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons liqueur (your choice and optional) 3 tablespoons melted butter for the pan Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend thoroughly. Let the batter rest for 30 minutes to let out air bubbles. (This helps the crepes not stick to the pan.) Lightly coat crepe pan with melted butter, add 2 tablespoons batter and swirl pan until it is evenly coated. Cook approximately 1 minute, flip and cook for 30 seconds. Serve. 60 Years and Going Strong Armstrong Kitchens is a family-owned business now celebrating 60 years in operation, and planning for many more.
he story of Armstrong Kitchens is about continuity, stability and family. Sixty years ago, Mark and Betty Armstrong started their business in Merriam when the local kitchen industry was just beginning. Over the years, so many kitchens have been placed into area homes that its not unusual for today's Armstrong Kitchens to be called in to remodel an original Armstrong Kitchen from the '60's or '70's. The oldest known kitchen still with its original owner-that they are aware of- dates from 1965. That homeowner recently called simply to have some drawer adjustment done. Cleansing D Your Body
Do you know that the air inside our homes can be as much as five times as polluted as outside? Could you guess at how polluted your body is with the number of chemicals incorporated into your makeup, and skincare and cleaning products? That answer is less clear, researchers are finding, but certain ingredients are now drawing heat for their potential adverse effects on health.
Look at not only what the bottle says it can do for you, look at what the ingredients on the back could do to your health.
“We have to be careful not only with what we put in and on our bodies, but also with what we use to clean, and what we put on our clothes and breathe in,” says Paula Proud, a marketing specialist at Whole Foods Market in Overland Park. Turn the bottle on any product you are considering buying and read the ingredients. One can hardly be expected to be able to pronounce the words, much less understand what they mean, especially when the chemicals and compounds often run under multiple variations of similar names. Canada’s David Suzuki Foundation has taken on the challenge of deciphering the answers. Its 2010 spring study discovered alarming results when more than 6,000 individuals were asked to survey the ingredients in their personal-care products. While looking for 12 components the foundation named the “Dirty Dozen” because of their reported risk to humans, participants found that nearly 80 percent of about 12,500 products examined contained at least one ingredient from the watch list, and about half contained multiple ingredients from the list. More than 1,000 products had no ingredient lists to analyze.

GOING MORE NATURAL With all the ingredients left on the health and wellness warning list, it’s not so simple to avoid products that could cause heath issues. But Proud says being alert is the first step to reducing risk. “A good way to start is just to be aware of what we’re using,” she explains. “Natural products are safer for you because they contain fewer toxins, but they’re also less harmful to the environment and soil.” For home cleaners and soaps, Proud likes the local, natural brand Zum Clean, stocked at Whole Foods and Indigo Wild. She recommends the brand’s sea salt soap, and its frankincense and myrrh laundry soap. “It makes your house smell lovely,” she adds. Franklin suggests looking for products that contain a few natural alternatives to common, potentially harmful ingredients. For laundry, she recommends purchasing “laundry soaps” rather than “laundry detergents” because “there’s no such thing as a natural detergent.” For face and body products, she suggests choosing items scented with pure essential oils, which are always plant extracts, rather than fragrance oils, and buying soaps with super-moisturizing (and very natural) vegetable glycerin. Last, she likes sugar-based facial scrubs for excellent exfoliation without harsh additives. “It scrubs and cleanses your skin without the nasty chemicals in many facial scrubs that strip your skin of the natural oils you need, leaving your skin looking like a peeled hard-boiled egg,” she says. The best part about using natural alternatives? It doesn’t have to pack a financial punch. “We offer all different price points,” Proud says. “When people become aware, they might be willing to pay a little more. But there are also things as simple as baking soda mixed with salt for cleaning your home. We can get really simple on natural cleaning.” 118 • KCHANDG.COM

Radon In Kansas City, radon is the most common deadly gas in the home. Radon is produced by the breakdown of uranium in rocks and solids. The gas naturally occurs in the soil, and pressure from the home’s foundation pushes it into the home through cracks and holes. “Kansas City is a rocky area,” says Travis Siegfried, owner of Certified Radon. “One in three homes will test high for radon.” Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and is responsible for approximately 23,000 deaths a year. But reducing radon in the home is doable. The first step is detection. The EPA
“Kansas City is a rocky area. One in three homes will test high for radon.” recommends taking action if the level in a home is four picoCuries or higher. (A picoCurie is one-trillionth of a Curie, “No job is complete until you and I are 100% satisfied.” Brad Buss

“If there are high levels of radon in the home, the most beneficial action is to install a radon-reduction system,” Siegfried says. “The ventilation system is fit to the home and depressurizes it by drawing out air and moisture. It works as a dehumidifier also.” A system costs $750 to $1,200 and takes only three to four hours to install. For new-home construction, Crable recommends paying the extra $200 to $300 to install pipes that will make the home radon-resistant. The certified installer will drill through the lowest slab in the foundation, route pipes to the designated areas in the house, and install a fan to draw out radon and moisture.

respiratory problems are all warning signs of mold. “Stachybotrys, or black mold, has gotten a lot of awareness in recent years,” Crable says, “but all molds have the ability to put off toxins. All they need is a nutrient source, favorable temperatures

and water.” Controlling moisture is the best way to prevent any type of mold from growing in the home. Check for pipe leaks and install a dehumidifier in a basement or home that’s prone to flooding or high humidity. Carbon monoxide, radon and mold may be the most recognized poisonous toxins found in homes, but high levels of any chemicals can be deadly. To prevent buildups of deadly gases, make sure appliances are properly installed, ventilate your home, reduce excess moisture and don’t ignore the warning signs. “Everyone is different in their sensitivities,” Crable says. “If you feel ill in your home but better when you leave, figure out what could cause this.
