Yes, fall is a favorite of mine. This issue is all about favorites. You’ll get a sneak peak into the homes of some of your favorite design professionals (page 47) and see what they love about the rooms they’ve created for themselves. Winners of our “Favorite Spaces” contest, these experts share tips on making a space your own and doing it beautifully. hen the time came for Julie and David Kaltenrieder to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, they envisioned an intimate, one-of-a-kind dinner party with their closest family and friends. To ensure a night to remember, the couple called on Chef Carl McConnell and his wife, Nancy, of Stone Soup Cottage to set the stage with fresh, autumn-inspired fare and an inviting ambience. And with the restaurant’s convenient “estate catering” service, which provides tasting dinners for parties of fewer than 25 guests, Julie and David were able to host a carefree gathering in their Chesterﬁeld home while enjoying the evening with loved ones. “Carl created a unique and fresh menu for our party,” says David. “He is such a talented chef. His food is always spectacular.” Situated in a historic 1850s farmhouse in the quiet community of Cottleville and modeled after the well-known fable for which it was named, Stone Soup Cottage is a culinary tour de force brimming with history and character. With just seven tables, four- and six-course tasting menus, and a single seating of 24 guests every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening (as well as a champagne brunch on Sundays), Stone Soup oﬀers an entirely unique dining experience.

Chef Carl McConnell honed his culinary talents as a chef for luxury cruise liners and the American Orient Express train. He and his wife, Nancy, who have traveled to more than 130 countries, modeled their restaurant after those found in Italy and the south of France.

Whether setting the table at Stone Soup Cottage or in someone’s home, Nancy designs a sparking, formal tablescape to set the mood for an intimate gathering. The couple toasted with creative cocktails for their anniversary celebration: a Limoncello Martini with a lemon basil garnish and a Gooseberry Chambord Bellini. “We like to create drinks using herbs from our own garden,” says Nancy.

rossing over the wooden bridge that leads to interior designer Emily Castle’s home is a journey into serenity. Evergreens and flowering shrubs enclose each side of the walkway and hint at the mood change to come. The house itself, which Emily describes as “rustic contemporary,” is filled with warm wood tones, interesting textures and Asian accents. But the home’s most important accessory is the garden that surrounds it. Visible through wide windows in every room, the garden pulls a visitor into the outdoors and blends seamlessly with the home’s woodsy, rustic interior. What seems so effortless is all by design. If her home and garden reflect serenity, Emily says, it is because both have been fashioned to be enjoyed with a minimum of maintenance. “You shouldn’t have to worry that everything is perfect and be chained to maintenance. I don’t like a lot of ‘stuff’ on the outside or the inside. A home and garden should be easy to enjoy,” she believes. “You should be able to come home and retreat.” When Emily and her husband, architect Bill Castle, bought their Ladue residence 10 years ago, it had all the makings of a retreat.

Tucked away behind several other homes and down a long driveway, access to the property was through a wrought iron gate. What’s more, it came with both outdoor and indoor swimming pools and a lovely little Chinese garden, complete with a waterfall. What it didn’t have was ease of maintenance. The Chinese garden was totally overgrown. A decaying railroad tie retaining wall adjacent to a ground-level wooden deck on the east side of the home also was an eyesore. Working with Bill Minford, a landscape designer with Sherwood’s Forest, the Castles began to search for trees and shrubs that would thrive in their landscape and bring both architectural and design interest to their garden 12 months a year.

“They were looking for things that caught their eye and were a little bit different than the plants you would normally see in a St. Louis garden,” says Minford. “They wanted the landscape laid out in a different way – one that would create a little more punch. We used plantings like a ‘Blue Atlas’ cedar, a columnar spruce and different types of Japanese maples to come up with a good variety of colors and textures.” In less than 10 years, the Castles have achieved their low-maintenance goal. In fact, to prepare the garden for the St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles photo shoot, “We got up at 6:30 a.m. and by 8:30 everything was done,” Emily testifies. Here’s how they’ve made their garden a true retreat. The Castles rely on evergreens, architectural tree and shrub shapes and interesting textures to sustain the garden year-round. Once or

twice a year, they call upon the expertise of landscapers from Cass Bonsai Gardens in Edwardsville, Illinois, to prune their trees and shrubs in a way that creates maximum architectural interest. “You need someone professional to give things a beautiful shape and encourage height,” Emily suggests. “Otherwise, shrubs like a Japanese maple can end up looking like R2-D2. “In the summer, I punch the garden up with color. I use everyday plants – nothing more exotic than impatiens and caladiums. The mix of colors is so vibrant, you don’t need anything else.” Emily plants caladium tubers (ordered from a grower in Florida) “by the hundreds in June, when the soil is warm – around 70 degrees. They’re up by July. I order a large leaf mix. I have no idea what color I’m planting, but it always works. You also can cut them, put them in a vase, and they look fantastic indoors.” Rather than letting tall grasses sprawl into mounds, Emily creates an interesting architectural accent by bunching the stems into a tall column and binding the column two-thirds of the way up with green garden tape. The result is a fountain-like shape with a ﬂuﬀy topknot. See design resources on page 70.

With red and gold leaves blanketing the landscape and sweatshirts beckoning as temperatures turn crisp, nothing says autumn has arrived more than enjoying an evening in front of the fireplace. Outdoor hearths are more popular than ever these days, as they extend the calendar just a bit for living alfresco. Scott Hepper, master floral designer for Carriage House Florals at Diane Breckenridge Interiors, gives his take on dressing your outdoor fireplace with fall finesse. “Autumn in St. Louis is the perfect time to extend your living to the great outdoors,” he says. “I love to incorporate the natural beauty and abundance of fall into my outdoor designs. A fireplace is a wonderful place to showcase the rich floral hues and organic textures of this glorious time of year.” For this particular hearth, Scott chose seasonal items ideal for the fall centerpiece, which reflect “harvest” and gathering. “I used red, yellow and green apples, large artichokes, berries, Bittersweet vine, grapes, cherry brandy roses from Amsterdam, succulents as ‘filler’ and some other local Missouri berries and natural grasses,” he adds. Of course, style options abound when choosing décor to accent your fireplace. Transitional and contemporary designs can also be as dramatic or as understated as you would like, reflecting your home and lifestyle.

Why she loves it: “I love this room because it reminds me of soft ocean breezes and sand between my toes,” says interior designer Denise Fogarty. “Its turquoise blue walls set the stage for the sea-inspired color palette that I adore.” Bold patterns on pillows add zest and personality. “Seagrass” chairs continue the coastal feel, as does the grasscloth covering the backs of the bookcases, creating a symmetrical balance within the room. “I knew I had accomplished the look I had set out to create,” Denise says with a smile, “when my son came home from school and said that the room looked too ‘beachy.’ It was perfect and truly is one of my favorite spaces.”

Why the judges love it: We love the beautiful, airy nature of this space and how it perfectly integrates the seaside theme through color, texture and art. The built-in bookshelves flanking the fireplace are substantial and complement the skillful transformation of what was probably a dated brick-surround fireplace. The designer has created a living room that is very soothing and serene!

Why she loves it: “I love the indoor/outdoor feel of our home’s dining room,” says interior designer Emily Castle. An existing circular chandelier sets the tone for new furnishings and a new rug in this sun-filled space. A classic glass-topped table, upholstered chairs, and windows softened with knotted, unlined stationary panels provide a soft respite from the rustic character of the home’s reclaimed wood, while adding an exotic ambience. “We enjoy gathering with friends and family on the deck just outside the dining room for a casual drink before dinner,” says Emily. The geometric rug that anchors the space is striking atop the Mexican tile floor. “The intricately carved bar adjacent to the dining room was here when we bought the house,” Emily notes. “It provides plenty of storage, as does an antique Japanese step Tansu chest.” Truly, Emily’s dining room is a favorite gathering spot reflective of her exquisite design skills.

Why the judges love it: We love the interesting play of “round” versus “square” in this space. The room looks inviting and upscale, and the inclusion of the chest is a wonderful addition. The space seems to transition well from the rest of the house, and the design aesthetic is unique – not one you see every day.

Why he loves it: What was once a small, dated and secluded 1970s kitchen is now kitchen and bath designer Jim Howard’s favorite space in his home. “I waited a long time to redo that original room without having to compromise my wish list,” says Jim, “and I really wanted a kitchen that was reﬂective of my abilities as a designer.” Jim hired one of Glen Alspaugh’s carpenters to do the demolition and lay the tile. “With the exception of a licensed electrician, the rest of the work was done by me,” Jim stated. “Some of my favorite details are the large sink/drainboard, two tall display cabinets, the fold-down wire racks behind the range that I salvaged from an old stainless steel backsplash, the spice drawer and spice wall cabinet to the right of the range, the microwave drawer, the lighting and the in-kitchen dining area.“ Functionally, the kitchen works perfectly, with a place for everything and easy access to it all. Plus, there is plenty of room for up to four cooks and guests, too. “Designing my own space and seeing that creation come to life has been so rewarding,” says Jim.

Why the judges love it: We love this gorgeous amber-colored kitchen! The color palette is calming, and the backsplash tile is beautiful. The room is pleasantly scaled and is an eﬃcient design in a tight space. We also love how the homeowner integrated the breakfast nook into the overall design.

Why she loves it: Pink and lime green – it’s a happy and classic combination that has made interior designer Denise Fogarty’s daughter’s room one of her favorites. “The challenges of keeping a girl’s room well-designed from toddler to teen are many,” says Denise. “Choose a classic color palette that will stand the test of time. You can’t miss with using pink for a little girl. Add lime green later on, and suddenly the room has a hip, new edge.” When choosing furniture, Denise again opted for a classic frame. “ The bronze wrought-iron bed will never look dated,” she says. “I also think it’s important to have children involved with the design of their own rooms,” Denise adds. “My daughter helped choose the canopy for her bed when she was very young, and she still loves it. And when she outgrew the more juvenile upholstery on her bench, she had a great idea for a new slipcover.” The cheerful colors help keep the space happy and casual, while the classic styling gives the room “staying power.” Nothing could be better for a young girl.

Why the judges love it: We love the fresh color palette and clean design of this very pretty room. The fabric canopy adds height and interest, and the space will easily transition from toddler to teen.

Why she loves it: For architect Lauren Strutman and her husband, architect Dick Busch, the master bath of their historic home truly marries the old with the new. “We live in the oldest house in Chesterﬁeld currently being used as an actual residence,” says Lauren. “In fact, our house used to be two separate two-story log cabins with a ‘dog trot’ in between.” It was later enclosed to create one house with a traditional center hall plan. One of their favorite spaces in their renovated circa 1836 home, the master bath was part of a 2005 addition. “We love how the plastered walls, wood ceiling and tumbled limestone ﬂoors make the space warm and cozy,” says Lauren. “We even chose to panel the adjoining closet areas in a horizontal pine ‘cabin’ style to add to the rustic ambience,” says Lauren. Tiling the shower walls, as well as using a curtain instead of a glass door, adds to the simple elegance of this timeless master bath.

Why the judges love it: Left and above: “We wanted to keep the rustic feel of our home, while adding the modern conveniences to make our master bath a comfortable and elegant oasis,” says Lauren. The cabinetry, designed by the homeowners and Ohio craftsman David T. Smith to resemble a collection of furniture pieces, adds historical character to the room.

We love the charm of mixing modern amenities with weathered textures. The homeowner was consistent with the rustic, historic theme, which gives the room a nice continuity and connects it so well to the existing bedroom. We also love the detail of the vanity backsplash, and the built-ins are wonderful. There is just the right amount of well-utilized space.

Why she loves it: “Good design doesn’t come with a formula,” says interior designer Denise Fogarty, who designed her home office to reflect a classic style punctuated with pops of black, red and grey. Neatly tucked away in a former bedroom, Denise’s business space has every office amenity within a beautiful surrounding. “I needed a serene place to meet with clients, yet one that would also be functional for the creative process,” she says, adding, “It was also very important to me to incorporate the right lighting.” Strategically placed sconces flanking the settee create a symmetrical balance, while an attractive white ceramic lamp on Denise’s desk is perfect task lighting. A simple shaded pendant light also replaced a fan in the center of the room. “It’s wonderful to work in a space you love,” says Denise.

Why the judges love it: We love the calming nature of the neutral color palette, especially the wonderful wallcovering. It is a sophisticated and serene choice for a home oﬃce. The room is functional, with great organization and storage. The eclectic and well-used mix of small-scale furniture gives the space interest, and the addition of the beautiful settee as a focal point is unique to most oﬃce spaces. It is just beautiful!

Why he loves it: “This outdoor living space is one my family’s favorites for casual dining, entertaining and just hanging out on weekend afternoons,” says design/build remodeling contractor Fred Bueler. The spacious screen porch adjoins the family room and kitchen and boasts generous access between rooms. It features a custom wood beadboard ceiling with an elevated center, set in a box diagonal design. “It’s a truly unique architectural attribute,” says Fred. “The ceiling was designed to ensure that natural light and a sky view remain visible from the family room,” he adds. Rooﬂines and overhangs were designed to complement the architectural integrity of this 1961 traditional ranch home. “Comfortable furniture was a must-have,” Fred adds, “with a television for catching Cardinals’ games throughout the summer.”

Why the judges love it: We love how this screen porch ﬂows so seamlessly from the interior of the home, and the architectural design is outstanding. This outdoor living space seems so pleasant, and the addition of the television and comfy furniture makes it a place you want to be.

Why she loves it: Originally built in 1836, the home that architect Lauren Strutman shares with her husband, architect Dick Busch, hails as the oldest house in Chesterfield, Missouri, currently being used as a residence. In fact, the home used to be two homes, both two-story log cabins, which were later combined to create one space. From a “green” perspective, nothing could be more eco-friendly than what Lauren and Dick have done by embracing the past and making it work for them today. “I designed the kitchen to complement the log cabin portion of our home immediately adjacent to it,” says Lauren. A museum-finish, water-based, low-VOC paint was also used. Appliances are hidden, except for the gorgeous AGA stove, which blends well with the historic design. “I love to cook,” says Lauren, “and this kitchen is state-of-the-art, but it looks like it’s been here forever and fits in so well with the rest of our home.”

Why the judges love it: We love how the rustic design and features, such as the ﬂag rattail cabinet hinges, complement this historic home. The black and caramel color palette with accents of olive and deep red is nicely integrated. This room skillfully blends an older look with all of the modern conveniences and oﬀers the cook a good amount of workspace.

Why she loves it: As a 20-something designer, Jilian Oxler has indeed made the most of her cozy 600-square-foot, one-bedroom space. “I was able to highlight the beautiful architectural details inherent to my 1920s home with punches of color, pattern and texture,” she says. “The biggest challenges I faced were ﬁnding small enough pieces that would trick the eye, shifting the scale of the environment and staying within my budget. By mixing expensive items with IKEA and vintage store purchases, I was able to create an economical, yet fun, chic and functional space. “Being on a budget shouldn’t be about living small,” advises Jilian. “It’s about ‘making it work.’ I have a lot of Tim Gunn moments.”

Why the judges love it: We love how much thought went into the eclectic treatment of this compact space. The mix of old and new gives this living/dining area a more expensive look. It’s original, real and pleasant – a beautiful representation of what can be done in a small space on a small budget.

She enjoys traveling and nature – especially the gardens, chickens and bees she tends on the 9-acre farm she shares with her husband – and remodeling their 90-year-old farmhouse in Kansas City, Kansas. Christine DeOrio Editor-in-Chief, Mountain Living

Prior to being named editor-in-chief of Mountain Living, Christine was executive editor of Mountain Living, managing editor of Senior Market Advisor and Beneﬁts Selling magazines, assistant editor of Delicious Living magazine, and the Denver restaurant critic for gayot.com. With SH&L since 2005, Giselle has spent more than 16 years editing magazines in the Seattle area and is a former writing and editing instructor through the University of Washington’s continuing education program. Giselle has participated as a judge for several design competitions, including the Northwest Design Awards and the Master Builders Association Remodeling Excellence Awards. During her tenure with SH&L, the magazine has presented more than 35 annual awards to local designers and architects.
