MEET THE UXBRIDGE & AREA NETWORKING GROUP What is the Uxbridge & Area Networking Group? We’re small and home-based business owners who meet monthly, building our network of business connections. There are no passwords, no secret handshakes, no quota for referrals or “homework” to be done. We’re a friendly, welcoming business group getting together to help each other to be successful. We exist to: • Share ideas, expertise and experiences • Make introductions to others in the community • Provide cost-effective ways to promote members’ businesses Who are our members? We are Entrepreneurs, business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations. Our members include individual sales professionals, business service providers, network marketing organizations and companies who provide consumer services. Most members are from the north Durham area, however we support a larger ‘ecosystem’ with members travelling regularly to our meetings from other communities. When are the meetings? AN AFFIRMATION OF LIFE:
THE BANH BOYS PAY IT FORWARD
Drowning is still one of the leading causes of death in young children but that didn’t make the news of the three-year-old Syrian boy washed up on shore any less heartbreaking - and it hit home for some people more than others. The Banh name - if not their story - is familiar to many people in Uxbridge. Dr. Vi Tu Banh, an optometrist and Dr. Michael Banh, a dentist, are the bookends of the family of eight who fled Vietnam during the “boat people” exodus in the late 1970’s. Oldest child Vi Tu was nine years old when he arrived in Uxbridge, and his brother Michael, the youngest child was born just a few months after the family settled. Though perhaps the word “settled” is inaccurate; as inaccurate as thinking that despite the problems of today’s world, we’ve come a long way. It’s easy to see how this thought could comfort some into complacency, but those who are reassured by this notion probably aren’t any one of the 200 people who shared a boat with the Banh family on their journey to a new life. Like the drowning of Syrian refugees, the Vietnam boat refugees experienced their own share of drowning related tragedy. In fact, drowning was the main reason Vietnamese refugees died en-route to their new lives. Many were also picked up by pirates, sold into slavery or into prostitution. Not all were as lucky as the Banh clan, and though ‘lucky’ seems to be a crude way to describe their fate – especially from the vantage of truly lucky people who have never had to literally run (or swim) for their lives - when Vi Tu and his family arrived at Pearson International Airport with nothing except the clothes they were wearing (clothes that had been donated to them by Canadians), they considered themselves lucky. Shocked, tired and confused, sure, but also resoundingly grateful. It’s this gratitude that spurred the Banh brother’s to join an initiative to sponsor a Syrian refugee family. Paying it forward, while partly accurate, doesn’t do true justice to the impetus behind their motivation. After speaking to Barb Murphy – one of the family’s original sponsors and close family friend – and reading the articles written about the Banh family - it’s clear their desire to help is founded in more than compassion; it’s also founded in hard-won empathy and palpable enthusiasm. “Most people don’t remember their first time in a car,” Barb tells me, “but the Banh children do. They were thrilled. They opened their arms to their new home and embraced everything.” From Christmas to car washes to being a part of Spring Water Days Baby Show, this family was experiencing so many things we take for granted for the first-time - and this is something it is so easy to lose track of: all the things we take for granted. It didn’t take long for the Banh’s sponsors to realize by welcoming this resilient family, they’d almost instantly strengthened and enriched the community. The efforts of more than 30 years ago are easily apparent today in the lives of two of Uxbridge’s most resilient residents. Not only are Vi Tu and Michael ready to provide free optometry and dentistry for the refugee families for an entire year, but they’re going to match community donations to sponsor Syrian families for up to $10,000. It’s more than a challenge; it’s an affirmation of life.
