president’s message

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since a handful of determined women — and a few brave men — gathered in a New York City conference room and held the first official meeting of the Network of Executive Women. Those pioneers committed their time, their passion and their reputations to a mission that was not always understood back then — advancing women in the consumer products and retail industry. The issue was hardly new. Women had been underrepresented in the industry’s leadership for as long as there had been an industry. What was new was the appreciation that gender diversity was not just good for women but good for business — and the determination to do something about it. That determination created the Network of Executive Women, an organization that has gone further, faster than even our most optimistic founders could have hoped. In the five years since the Network celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2006, our membership has grown from 1,900 to 3,300; our sponsors have increased from 35 to 72; and revenue has grown 150 percent to more than $3 million. In 2006 we had nine regional groups. Today we have 16 regional groups, including NEW Canada, that touch the lives of thousands of Network members and supporters coast to coast. Attendance at the NEW Leadership Summit has soared from 350 in 2006 to 820 in 2010. And we have expanded our national networking and education with the NEW Executive Leaders Forum (added in 2007), the NEW Multicultural Workforce Conference (2008) and the online NEW Leadership Academy (2010). But metrics are meaningless if they don’t drive change. And under the Network’s leadership, the industry has changed. Ten years ago, gender diversity was generally considered a compliance issue. Today, gender diversity is at the top of our industry’s agenda, almost universally recognized for the business benefits it provides. We didn’t do it alone, but the Network’s Champions, Ambassadors, leaders and volunteers have helped transform the consumer products and retail business one executive and one company at a time. Much remains to be done. While women make up almost half of the retail industry’s labor force, they comprise just 18.3 percent of its corporate officers and 5 percent of its CEOs.* This imbalance is a missed opportunity — and the unfinished business of our Network. We salute the women and men who were with us from the beginning — too many to include here. Without these visionaries, the Network would not be what it is today, and thousands of executives — myself included — would have missed the leadership and learning opportunities that only the Network provides. In honor of our founding members and sponsors, I send a challenge to the people and organizations who comprise the Network of Executive Women today: Let’s join together to create a new legacy worthy of the one that has been passed to us. Sincerely,

President, Network of Executive Women Senior Vice President, Merchandise Execution Walmart Stores

Leaders in business, leaders in NEW It’s no coincidence the Network’s sponsoring companies are leaders in the industry and leaders in the drive for diversity. Network sponsorship is just good business. We act as a force multiplier for our partners’ business building, leadership development and diversity and inclusion efforts. We provide benchmarking, best practices sharing and networking with customers and colleagues. And we offer our sponsors real return on investment, including membership privileges for their employees, admission to national conferences, speaking opportunities and sponsorship recognition at events, online and in print. No wonder that 95 percent of our sponsors renew their commitment each year. Or that executives and emerging leaders from our partner companies comprise nearly 80 percent of our membership, serving as officers, board members, committee members and volunteers. Network sponsorship sends a powerful message to women inside and outside your company: You are valued here.

Changing the industry, one leader at a time The Network directly impacts the lives and careers of thousands of industry executives each year — and these executives impact the lives and careers of thousands more. This circle of change impacts the entire consumer products and retail business, from the industry-bound students who receive our scholarships to the emerging leaders who attend our national and regional events; from the members who attend our NEW Leadership Academy webinars to the senior executives who attend our NEW Executive Leaders Forum. Inside the circle are opportunities for leadership, career development and education. Online tools that expand professional connections and knowledge. Industry-specific research and reports on diversity best practices. And, most significantly, connections to other people and other organizations in the consumer products and retail community. More than three in four Network leaders say NEW has helped them raise their industry profile, build professional skills and generate important business contacts for their companies.

NEW Executive Leaders Forum July 13-15, 2010 | Dallas The fourth annual NEW Executive Leaders Forum drew nearly 200 senior cpg/retail executives to the Westin Stonebriar Resort. The event was a rare opportunity for senior consumer products and retail industry executives to focus on collaborative innovation — ways that companies and teams can work together to create profitable new products and processes. Keynotes included Dave Dillon, chairman and CEO of The Kroger Co.; Joe DePinto, president and CEO of 7-Eleven Inc.; and Lyn Heward, director of creation for Cirque du Soleil. The Forum also included three breakout sessions and two panels, including a Leadership Roundtable with Bill Simon, CEO of Walmart US; Joan Chow, EVP and chief marketing officer of ConAgra Foods; Kim Nelson, senior vice president, snacks, of General Mills; Judy Schmeling, executive vice president and CFO of HSN Inc.; and David Williams, CEO of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services. NEW Leadership Summit September 27-29, 2010 | Charlotte The NEW Leadership Summit is an important date on the industry’s calendar and the Network’s signature event, attended by one in four NEW members each year. Our 2010 Summit at the Westin Charlotte was attended by more than 820 members, a 9.3 percent increase from our previous Summit and 134 percent more than our fifth anniversary convention in 2006. Each year the Summit focuses on leadership development, business issues and team building. In 2010 our theme — The NEW Normal — was explored in three SuperSessions and a roundtable discussion on the multigenerational workforce. Larry Merlo, CEO of CVS Caremark, opened the event; futurist Edie Weiner and Lt. Col. Consuelo Kickbusch, U.S. Army, retired, gave the opening and closing keynotes. The NEW Leadership Summit is recommended for cpg/retail executives, emerging leaders, representatives allied with the industry and all Network members. Learning from the experts (and each other) The Network’s three national conferences bring extraordinary learning opportunities to our members every year. Our conferences provide insights from industry leaders like Bob McDonald of Procter & Gamble and Cathy Green Burns of Food Lion. Eye-opening stories from differencemakers like Worldcom whistleblower Cynthia Cooper and Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post. Workshops that build leadership skills. And panel discussions that drill down on critical industry issues. That’s not counting the lessons exchanged over lunch, during breaks and in the cab heading to the airport. Peer-to-peer and person-to-person, attendance at our three national conferences is an education in itself.

A Network of networks It was something the Network’s founders never anticipated. But after NEW launched its first regional group in New England in 2003, the idea took off like a rocket. The Network has added regional groups almost every year since. In September 2010 the NEW Portland State University group merged with a contingent of Network supporters in Seattle to form the Network’s Pacific Northwest regional group. In November 2010, a group of industry women and men working in Toronto had their own “a-ha” moment and organized NEW Canada, the Network’s first group outside the United States. More than 7,100 Network members and guests attended 25 regional events in 2010 — informal mixers attracted still more. Regional groups bring the Network’s mission home to the communities where our members work and live. They provide cost- and timeefficient training opportunities and the chance to network with colleagues and clients. They grow the Network from the grassroots up, ensuring that the Network stays vital and connected.

Heroes and champions Every year hundreds of industry executives donate thousands of hours to the Network and its mission. As officers and board members, they make key decisions about the Network’s strategy and operations. As Ambassadors, they serve as a vital link between their companies and the Network. As Champions, they carry the Network’s message into their boardrooms and c-suites and foster Network engagement among their employees. These industry members don’t just talk the talk. They help design our conferences and plan our events. They attend conference calls, upload photos, write letters, reserve meeting spaces and print signs and fliers. They reach out to others, expanding the Network and advancing our mission of change. These leaders and volunteers aren’t just critical to the Network, they are the Network.

A record year, a record decade As a not-for-profit educational association, the Network grows to meet the needs of our mission. And the rapid, organic growth in our membership, sponsorship and event attendance during our first decade proves that the need for the Network of Executive Women is real. Ten years ago few could have foreseen the twists and turns of the decade ahead — years of conflict and rollercoaster growth followed by a stunning recession. Through it all, the Network has stood steady, sure in our mission, supported by our friends and confident that when we invest in people, our industry will always come out on top.
