“i had just come back
to work after maternity leave
when i joined new. I was working in my current role with my eyes on ’What’s next?’ I saw my peers continuing to move up, but, with young kids at home, I felt the need to slow my career progression a bit. I wondered if it was okay to be a black belt at something you love to do, rather than pursue a higher position at that point. I came to realize I could take my foot off the gas, but have options in the future. I learned there is no magic pill to make it all fall in line, but I wasn’t by myself. NEW relationships helped me discover my own work/life fit.”

“TO HAVE AN EXTERNAL LENS
AND HEAR
OTHER points
OF VIEW
has helped me think about what kind of leader I want to be. Through the Network I have built relationships with women I’d normally never meet. We share our journeys and struggles. I’ve learned I don’t have to balance work and life — I can integrate them. I don’t need to feel guilty when I step out to take a call from the school nurse and my house doesn’t have to look like Martha Stewart’s. Hearing the experiences of very successful women has helped me let some of my perfectionism go. I can embody a more realistic standard to help me lead a high performing, motivated and diverse team.”

“BEFORE
i accepted
my position, I CONNECTED WITH NEW PAST CHAIR
Alison Kenney Paul to seek out advice on the direction of my career. She said working within the mergers and acquisition group would be a fantastic place to gain more exposure to the consumer goods and retail industry since it experiences a high volume of mergers and acquisitions. The M&A space is highly male dominated, so with two of my female colleagues I’ve started “Deals with Women” — an internal group that supports women in this fast-paced work environment. NEW is critical not only in my professional development, but also in paying it forward to other women.”

“in my role
at pepsico i’m concerned
about developing young
women who are just emerging in our company. Our women see other leaders at NEW events, are inspired and they bring what they learn back. They are contributing and they feel like they are contributing — and that helps PepsiCo retain great talent. As they grow as leaders, our young women are passing on the leadership skills to others they work with, men and women, and that can only make the company stronger.”

“after my first experience
at a new
northern california event
I quickly became an advocate of the Network’s mission and helped grow Clorox’s engagement from one member to more than 200 across the United States and Canada. Now we are leveraging NEW as a ‘field employee resource group’ to connect women leaders to retail partners and industry peers. Today’s global marketplace requires new approaches and a diverse leadership team in terms of worldviews, experiences and thought processes. NEW is a key strategic partner in creating a culture of inclusion, where differences are valued and encouraged.”

“Working from home
THERE IS A RISK OF BECOMING ISOLATED. The experiences I’ve had as NEW Mid-Atlantic secretary and treasurer have helped me connect to people outside of Kraft and have changed the way I approach my job. I’m more willing to step up to new tasks and take chances. Being a member of NEW has helped me realize I am responsible for my own career. I need to know where I want to go, what steps I need to take to get there and what opportunities look like. Hearing other women’s stories, I’ve learned life can throw you a curve ball; a door might close, but another will open.”

Yes, I’m selling product, but NEW makes me think about leaving a legacy, making a difference for females in our organization. It’s about mentoring and sponsoring women. “the first
new event i attended _ featured Mondelez International CEO Irene
Rosenfeld, who was CEO of Frito-Lay at the time. The first-ever NEW Philadelphia event featured Denise Morrison, now CEO of Campbell Soup Co. To hear their stories up close and personal was so inspiring. That is what I love about the Network — it gives women access to other women’s success stories. My story is simply hard work and determination. Any glass ceiling — any ceiling — can be broken and people need to see that and hear that. NEW gives a platform to share our voices, our tricks of the trade, and ways we, as women, can balance our lives, seize opportunities and maneuver through our careers.”

“when i joined the
network, my career goals were the same as they are now: deliver distinguishable business results to enable me to be top rated in my company and in the industry. I had great roles and experiences, but NEW gave me the opportunity to collaborate with my peers — women and men — on something we thought was critical: recruiting, retaining and advancing women industry wide. NEW helped me network, coach and be coached across companies. This was important for me because one can become insular if all of your networking is within one company. Through NEW, I have built an expansive network of great friends, mentors, coaches and sponsors, and my involvement has increased my industry profile. As a senior leader, NEW continues to support me and others who have reached the industry’s top levels. It is my belief that your work is never done. There is always an opportunity to contribute, learn, grow and develop.”

New beginnings The year 2012 will be remembered as the point where we took a deep breath and asked, “What’s next?”
With 7,000 members, 700 companies, 84 national sponsors and 19 regions
in the United States and Canada, the Network of Executive Women comprises the largest mission-driven organization serving the consumer products and retail industry.
How we leverage this influence is the question posed by the Network’s
continuing NEW 2020 initiative, which began in 2012.
We interviewed 68 thought leaders, held six nationwide focus groups
and surveyed more than 200 industry executives of every age, job level and background.
We learned employees want to advance on their own terms, reconcile their
lives and careers, and effect real change in their organizations. We learned companies need to keep top talent while doing more with less. And we learned that women bring special qualities to management and can be a powerful catalyst for change.
The insights we’ve gained point the way to profitable new strategies for your
business — and a reimagined Network to help you achieve them.
We believe it’s time women take the lead in creating a better business
environment for everyone in our industry — and we are hard at work creating a learning and leadership community that will help our members and partners drive this change.
NEW 2020 means new learning and career development opportunities for
your employees, best practices for your organization and enhanced advisory services that will help you build your business. We hope you will be with us on the exciting journey ahead.
