PROJECT 2 - LEARNING SPACE Carpenter Center
The object of this intervention was to create an outdoor learning space for individual, small group and large group study. Spaces for these different ‘modes’ of study were to be defined by implied volumes. The learning space was intended to be built inside of a pit, I took my intervention above the pit to amplify the feeling of being outdoors. The ground within my intervention will be grass, to define the boundary of my intervention and to provoke people to sit. The wall forms I created are inspire by Tadao Ando’s gallery at the Art Institute of Chicago, and are meant to create a feeling of stillness within the space. The wall forms are divided into two categories: the two large shapes are static and the smaller shapes are dynamic. These wall forms move along the grid Le Corbusier laid out. At a certain positron, they line up to create a solid wall, providing a surface for viewing films. With my intervention I intend to create a space for lounging, a space which promotes solitude and collaboration.

PROJECT 3 - PAVILLION Cristian Science Center
A pavilion created to redesign the spatial experience of the Christian Science Center. Frames and fragments view towards the Prudential Center. By removing all perspective lines from view and continuing the geometric cuts up on to the ceiling, views are collapsed and unique moments are created. The supporting walls of the project are placed to highlight the paths frequented by pedestrians, they are also used to frame views out of the pavilion. The combination of the slanted supporting walls and the paly of shadows from the perforated ceiling is intended to foster the impression of being in a rainforest.

PROJECT 4 - MUSEUM STAIR The main stair is a sculpture within the room. Galleries are created around it to promote viewing of the stair from many different points of view. These galleries move in and out of closed space. The high railing allows the visitor to feel as if he is moving through a volume within the room. The form of the stair and the galleries promotes conscious movement of the body. The main stair is a system that engages the ceiling and inhabits space within the ‘carved out volumes’; but does not engage the floor. For this purpose, the stair does not actually touch the floor; the visitor makes a conscious decision to step on to the stair and become a part of the system. The visitor has the choice of taking a slow route through the museum space, by taking the main stair, or a quick route by taking the second stair. By creating these two sets of stairs, the visitor never has to retrace his path to return to the starting point.
