FAMILY DUDLEY HEALTH & SQUARE EDUCATION CENTER

This project proposes to create a model for complete family health by programmatically and spatially integrating a community health center, a family center and a charter school. It will provide multidisciplinary, multigenerational health care and education that will lead to a healthier community.

It is clear that a health center and charter school both provide a beneficial tool for the community and have the potential for shared programming. However, it is unclear how they should interact spatially. The family center presents an ideal intermediary program to integrate the users of the health center and school, while allowing for both to have their own designated, private spaces.

USER TYPES

There are three main user types: A, B, and C. User A visits the building mainly for health center services, but

also takes advantage of the mental health and wellness programming in the family center. User B attends the charter school, but also utilizes the afterschool program and gym space. User C is the critical case: this user is brought into the facility through family center services, but then begins to take advantage of health center and school programming. User C has the capacity to bring new users such as their children or other familiy members.

The site is centrally located in Dudley Square, directly across from Dudley Square Station and the future Department of Education. The project fronts Warren Street, a busy commercial street and Harrison Street, a quieter, residential area. The site is surrounded by various community facilities such as schools, libraries and businesses.

URBAN DIAGRAM The building is shaped by two forces: moves based on an exportable model and moves informed by the site’s context.

STEP 1: COURTYARD BUILDING A courtyard in the center of the block allows light and air to reach more of the building and creates a semi-private exterior space to be utilized by both the users of the health center and charter school.

EXPORTABLE FEATURE: Building should be located close to public transit, in order to be accessible by foot to all community members.

STEP 3: OCCUPIABLE ROOF-SCAPE The eastern portion of the building is lowered to allow for an occupiable roof and to be a more appropriate scale for the residential development across the street. This also allows family center programs to take advantage of eastern light.
