Sun Pole In response to the design brief, a field of rotatable poles are proposed for the Gateway project. The structure features a twisted form allowing two or more surfaces to be seen from one direction together with a hovering part. Inspired by the natural behaviour of sunflower towards sun, the design is generated based on the angle of the sun over the course of the day. Dynamism and changes are created where every pole will rotate in relation to the position of sun during the day by incorporating solar panel into one side of the structure. The series of distinctively rotated structures will thus engender an interesting visual perception and subsequently overcome the existing mundane landscape. In fact, rotation changes the position of the hovering part of the structure, contributing different driving experience as one passes through the site at different time on a day. Also, solar energy Furthermore, weathering effect is incorporated with the use of copper cladding for two faces of the structure where the bright copper colour will gradually changes into verdigris patina. This gives sense of ageing and thus associating the design with the growth of the municipality over the years. In short, simply by exploiting the solar panel technology, an innovative design is developed and is definitely capable of serving as an iconic Gateway with its repetition and scale.
