A National Day of Prayer Thursday, May 7, 2015
WHEREAS, civic prayers and national days of prayer have a long history in our constitutional republic, dating back to the First Continental Congress in 1775; and WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence, our first statement as Americans of national purpose and identity, asserted that people have God-given inalienable rights; and WHEREAS, President George Washington proclaimed a day of public thanksgiving and prayer in 1795; and WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln signed a Congressional resolution calling for a day of fasting and prayer in 1863 during the United States Civil War; and WHEREAS, Congress passed unanimously a bill proclaiming an annual National Day of Prayer in 1952. President Truman signed it into law, and each year the President of the United States was required to designate a day for national prayer. WHEREAS, the Supreme Court has affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer and the Supreme Court and the U.S. Congress begin each day with prayer; and WHEREAS, in 1988, legislation setting aside the first Thursday in May of each year as a National Day of Prayer was passed unanimously by both Houses of Congress and signed by President Ronald Reagan; and WHEREAS, the National Day of Prayer is an opportunity for Americans of all faiths to join in united prayer to acknowledge our Creator, to give thanks for our blessings and to seek Divine guidance throughout our days: NOW, THEREFORE, We, the Vernon County Commissioners of the County of Vernon, in the State of Missouri, do hereby proclaim, May 7, 2015, as National Day of Prayer throughout this county, and we encourage all residents to observe the day in ways appropriate to its significance.
