By Loretta George The Fort Scott Tribune

The 35th Annual Good Ol’Days Festival is gearing up for the annual community fun weekend, June 2-4. The theme this year is the National Park Service Centennial celebration. For 100 years, America’s national parks have been teaching the public about the history and beauty of their local environment. Fort Scott has its own national park, the Fort Scott National Historic Site, located north of Main Street, which will have special offerings this weekend. Centennial celebration activities Seven national parks from the area will help the Fort Scott National Historic Site tell the story of their own piece of American history on Saturday, June 4. The national park activities will take place on the Fort Scott National Historic Site grounds. “Stories of each site will be told through programs and stations around the FSNHS activities,” Barak Geersten, FSNHS coordinator for the Good Ol’ Days weekend, said. Other national parks participating are Tall Grass Prairie, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Brown VS Board of Education National Historic Site all in Kansas; Homestead National Monument in Nebraska; George Washington Carver National Monument and Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, both in Missouri; and Pea Ridge National Military Park in Arkansas. There will be activities for all ages from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free. Volunteer Jim Gallion from Wilson’s Creek will portray John Ray, Missouri

Unionist, at 10:30 a.m. Ray served as the area postmaster, and, being the father of 12 children, had one of the larger houses in the area. During the battle of Wilson’s Creek, the Ray House served as a temporary hospital. Gallion will be telling Ray’s story in a first-person fashion, according to Geersten. Highlights of the day also include Native American dancing, Geersten said. The dancing programs will be provided by Beyond the Circle Dancers at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. “They will offer cultural exchange through Native American song and dance,” Geersten said. “They represent the Navajo, Ottawa, Ojibwa, Apache, Lakota, and Cherokee tribes and are based out of Springfield, Mo. They have performed and powwowed all over the United States sharing their heritage and culture through traditional song and dance.” The group will also be selling fry bread and crafts. Racial segregation interpretation Brown vs. Board of Education will set up a classroom on site where children can use kindergarten blocks and materials to construct schools. “This will be accompanied by a short program interpreting segregation and how ‘separate but equal’ worked in early 20th century schools,” Geersten said.

History and tour of tallgrass prairie At the Tallgrass Prairie station, visitors can learn about prairie plants and the Native American uses of buffalo. The park staff at this station will also offer a tour of Fort Scott’s tallgrass prairie at 12:30 p.m. Civil War history At 1:30 p.m. there will be a Civil War artillary demostration. Pea Ridge National Military Park will present Union and Confederate uniforms for children to try on. Homesteader life An employee of Homestead National Monument will give a program at 2 p.m. that takes young people

through various chores such as laundry, butter churning, etc. in “A Day in the Life of a Homesteader.” Carver’s discoveries George Washington Carver National Monument staff will have a peanut milk demonstration on site as well as interpreting Carver’s other scientific discoveries at 2:30 p.m. Blacksmith Fort Larned National Historic Site will provide a blacksmith with a forge demonstrating metal work of the mid-19th century. When entering FSNHS, pick up a map of the various programs and stations.
