NATIONAL FFA WEEK
Area Star in Agriculture Placement
RICH HILL FFA Chapter Rich Hill FFA Year in Review The Rich Hill FFA has had a successful year at the local level and state level. The FFA started off the summer by taking seven members to the Washington Leadership Conference. The students spent a week enjoying the nation’s capitol while also developing their leadership skills. The students enjoyed several monuments and multiple museums. The students also spent time learning leadership skills and participated in team building activities. The students also got to meet and take a picture with Senator Roy Blunt. It is an awesome activity, which the students enjoyed. They moved through the summer by having 114 different entries in the local, district, and State Fair. Students had everything from sheep, cattle, swine to vegetables, horticulture, rabbits, poultry, and agri-mechanics projects. The chapter also had their annual 4th of July Dunk Tank. Students volunteered for shifts for the week of the 4th. The Rich Hill FFA hosted the Area VII summer volleyball tournament. It was held on August 2nd, 2013 at the High School. Due to rain, the tournament that is usually sand volleyball got moved to the high school gym. There were 8 different teams. At the end of the day the Rich Hill Chapter took 3rd behind Cass Career Center’s 1st Place, Sherwood and Appleton City’s 2nd place. The students had a great time and already are looking forward to next year’s competition. The chapter got started off right by having 20 plus members receive the chapter degree. The ceremony was held in Warrensburg, Mo. The chapter also got a visit from a National FFA officer. She talked with the students about leadership and how FFA had affected her life. The chapter also took 9 members to National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky. The FFA had three students receive the very prestigious award of American FFA Degree. The students are as follows; Logan Wheatley, Jara Mumma, and Morgan Kithcart. The chapter was extremely proud of this great accomplishment. After convention, the students had their annual FFA Barnwarming. This year’s theme was “Night Train” by Jason Aldean. The candidates were as follows: freshmen Brendan Ephland and Taylor Brooks, sophomores; Blaine Robb and Allison Taylor, Juniors; Riley Cameron and Hayley Klinksick and Seniors; Jackson Ogburn and Makayla Fuqua. The 2013 FFA Barnwarming King was Riley Cameron and the Queen was Allison Taylor. The FFA Chapter also completed community service by collecting 101 pairs of socks for American soldiers. Each year around Christmas the FFA collects socks for soldiers. The students collect them and package them to be sent to Oklahoma City where they will be transported overseas to active duty troops. The FFA is extremely proud of our troops and plans on keeping this activity alive for many years. All and all the FFA had an excellent year. The FFA had two state degree recipients and three American Degree Receipants. The
FFA had a state finalist in Star in Ag Placement while also having a finalist in the Proficiency area of Diversified Crop Production. The FFA was also represented by a student in FFA State Talent and FFA State Choir. The FFA also had many proficiency applications and one Area Degree Recipient. The Parliamentary Procedures team won Area and the FFA had 3 contest teams make it to state. Also the chapter had one team out of the top in 10 districts. The year has been and success and the FFA is extremely grateful for all individuals that help make it all happen.
Rich Hill FFA Week The events are set for the Rich Hill FFA’s 1st Place Parlimentary Procedure Team. week. They lead the week off by attending the Western farm Show in Kansas City on Friday and then go skiing at Weston, Mo., on Saturday night. Monday is hat day, Tuesday is Dress like a Redneck, Wednesday; Muddiest Truck/Tractor Day, Thursday; Teacher Luncheon, Friday is the Petting Zoo and Sunday is FFA Sunday. The chapter will attend Zion Lutheran Church of Prairie City and go out to eat afterwards. Some of the events set for this week are new for the chapter but nonetheless they are excited about the week to come. They really have a lot of activities scheduled and hope to have high participation. The FFA has made a few changes to the Petting Zoo with allowing the public to come in and also making homemade ice cream for all the elementary students. This will allow the chapter members to truly explain and show the elementary students where their food comes from. Once again the FFA is excited about the week and all of National Convention. the activities that the chapter has planned.

BRONAUGH FFA Chapter The Bronaugh FFA Chapter has a member total of about 50 every year. Being a small school, Bronaugh has a very good number of FFA members compared to other schools of related size. However, we do not let our size affect our participation rate. Our chapter is involved in many activities throughout the school year as well as during the summer. We also provide community service to the City of Bronaugh as our way to give back. When the school year is at a halt and summertime approaches, many of our FFA members take part in our local youth fair to show livestock as well as make projects to compete for ribbons. Some of our livestock showmen take their animals to other fairs as well, such as the Gold Buckle Gala, the Missouri State Fair, etc. Our chapter is very competitive and successful when it comes to showing livestock. We always strive to be the best while representing the Bronaugh FFA Chapter. After summer ends and the upcoming school year rolls around, our chapter always kicks it off with a chapter meeting to get things back on track. We introduce the schedule for the new year and everything proceeds smoothly from that moment on. Our chapter’s various activities throughout
the year include monthly meetings, barnwarming, our potluck dinner, the annual awards banquet, community service projects, contest teams, and much more. Currently, we are merging into contest season. We have several contest teams that we plan on competing with this year. We plan on having practices and working hard to have successful teams. Aside from our events and competitions, we have some members that have exceeded the expectations of our chapter. EL DORADO SPRINGS FFA Chapter Agricultural Mechanics
Agricultural mechanics, referred to as “Ag Mech,” is a sophomore through senior agricultural class offered by El Dorado Springs High School. This class has become a big part and key focus of our school Ag program. This class, taught by teacher and FFA advisor Brett Neil, offers basic knowledge on things such as welding, basic tool identification, electric motors, concrete, small engine, plumbing, and other basic shop knowledge. First offered at the sophomore level, agricultural mechanics class offers a basic intro into these skills. After a student has taken this class, junior and senior year the agricultural construction class allows students to use these skills to construct their own projects. Then every year around late January, the Eldo FFA and many other FFA programs around the country begin training teams for contests held in March. Agricultural Mechanics is one of the many contests trained from an Ag class. This team is always very competitive in contests and usually very successful. Another team being trained out of this class is Nursery and Landscaping. In this contest, students are trained on landscaping plans, various plant identification, and basic nursery and landscaping knowledge. This is the first time in several years this contest team has been trained.
Contest Teams
Contest teams are a very big part of the FFA year, and are participated in by FFA programs across America. Also known as Career Development Events or CDE’s, they’re a competitive format that gauge the knowledge learned by students in agricultural education courses. These contests are held from March 1st until state, held on April 17-18. March 1st: College of the Ozarks March 4th: Livestock Judging at Diamond March 6th: Farm Management at MU March 8th: Miller March 15th: MacDonald County March 21st: Crowder College
March 22nd: Skyline March 5th,7th,8th: Districts March 17th,18th: State Nine strong teams are being trained by Mr. Neil, Mrs. Poirot, and Ms. Drake this year, offering lots of variety. Livestock Judging: Students are trained to judge and grade various livestock species including: swine, cattle, sheep, and goats. Students must be able to give a memorized set of oral reasons to judges. Agricultural Mechanics Nursery and Landscaping Entomology: Basic knowledge and identification of insects. This was enjoyed by many members seeing agricultural booths or attending the amusement park. Aug. 24th was the tractor pull, members helped with parking or concessions.
