NEWENT BODY REPAIR CENTRE

“Remember, it’s not how fast you go in a Formula 1 car that injures or kills you – it is how quickly you stop. ” – Nigel Mansell

That rule applies in all cars, not just in Mansell ’s famous Williams Red 5. And it is not only the injuries, there’s the damage to the car. Bear in mind you don’t have the budget of an F1 racing team. If you’re involved in a fender-bender, if your bonnet gets crumpled, if it puts a dent into a door . . . . 01531 820093 and we ’ll x it. Pain ng numbers on the bonnet will be extra, in red or any colour.

A PUBLIC APPEAL

THE REFURBISHMENT OF NEWENT’S WAR MEMORIAL

“Sponsor a Name” for one of The Fallen of The Parish.

At the end of the 1st World War there was an upsurge of feeling that something should be done to honour those people who had given their lives in conflict.

A thanksgiving service was held, and the Church Bells rung throughout the day when the war ended. A remembrance service was subsequently held on 29th December 1918 where the names of the fallen, recorded as being 35, were read out.

In January 1919, the Rector instigated a series of discussions resulting in a special meeting of an advisory committee being held on 12th February to consider the proposal of a memorial not just to cover the ecclesiastical Parish of Newent but the surrounding areas.

A few months later The Committee met again and following considerable discussion it recommended a stone cross in St Mary’s Churchyard with the names of the fallen engraved around its base. The funding for The Cross being raised by Public Subscription.

The unveiling and dedication of The Cross took place on 3rd November 1920 before a large congregation.

During periods of conflict there is much confusion and mistakes and omissions are easily made. This has clearly happened with the names of those fallen carved on The War Memorial as the names and numbers of those listed do not correspond with other data held in the Church and Parish Records.

In summary, The Parish is missing some 21 names from both World War I and 2, resulting in the total number of names that should be engraved on the Newent War Memorial being 110.

With the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and other local Newent memorial events this year, you can help fund the refurbishment and addition of those forgotten parishioners that gave their lives in order that they may be immortalised on our War Memorial.

The total cost of The Project is estimated to be £10,000 and it is planned to be completed during October of this year in advance of our Remembrance Services.

You can help fund this project by donating the sum of £10 per letter to be inscribed or £100 per name to the Newent War Memorial Project c/o Newent Initiative Trust
