Gorsley Post Office and Shop Reopens
Andrew said "The Baptist Church were very supportive in offering the space at the church in the first instance which meant we could go ahead and find a way to reopen the shop.
It is very nice to see that, thanks to the local community, Gorsley now has its Post Office and shop back again after the retirement of the previous owners.
Funding came from individual donations and personal pledges from community members and without all the hard work from the community (which still continues) this would not have been possible.
After a year of very hard work by the community it was opened on 1st September 2018 by local MP Jesse Norman and it now boasts a well stocked shop with full Post Office facilities. The closing of the previous shop after 100 years at the same location had left a huge gap in the village however the community in Gorsley was determined it should not to become another ghost village.
This is a community shop and we hope the community and beyond will support and use this service so that it can remain viable. We are also hoping to open a coffee shop to compliment it in the near future”.
The community rallied around and local resident Andrew Gardner put together a group to look at the problem and to see what they could do to re open the shop. This resulted in the formation of a steering group which then set about organising the funding and where it should be sited, etc.
The shop and Post Office can be found in Gorsley by turning left just after The Roadmaker Inn. It is open Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5.30pm and Sat 9am to 12.30pm.
A possible location cropped up in Gorsley Baptist Church fairly early on and as the Pastor, David Taylor-Black has subsequently said “We saw this a significant and profound moment in our community. Having a shop and Post Office in the church premises is not and everyday occurrence however it seemed to compliment plans that we had to develop the church. We believe it will become a hub for friendship and help to forge a real sense of community.”.
This event has echoes of the community in Dymock coming together to buy up and run their local The Beauchamp Arms. This proved to be a very successful venture to the extent that Dymock community now own it. We all wish that this venture in Gorsley will have the same success. Both these ventures show the power of local communities and what they can achieve when everyone is working together. Perhaps Newent could learn by these local examples.
