Newent Newsletter Local news and events from around the town Newent Cancer Support Group Great Oaks Hospice runs the Newent Cancer Support Group in Newent with a view providing support and benefit to Cancer Patients or Carers in order to allow them time to meet with others and discuss issues, symptoms or even just an opportunity to leave the house. It enables members to to give each other mutual support from shared experience and allows for peer support and support from Health Care Professionals. The Group is open to all those whose lives are or have been affected by cancer, be they patients or carers and their families and new members are always very welcome. It meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 10am to 12 noon at Newent Community Centre. It is also a fun group as well and recent sessions have included fun with Argentinian tango dancing, craft activities and talks. The Group is now run by Ann Hurcomb, an Oncologist, who has worked in Lilleybrook Ward in Cheltenham and The Dilke and has spent 5 years working as part of Great Oaks Hospice's Home and Day Care Team. Ann is very keen to see the Group grow and would like to hear from anyone interested in joining the Group. She can be contacted on 01594 811910 or via email on Ann.Hurcomb@great-oaks.org.uk

Music Section A new group with strong local connections is about to burst onto the music scene. They are called ‘Spiral Planet’ and have already cut their first CD. The group members are mainly local musicians, lead by Newent’s Mark Millar (Keyboards), and include Stephen Butler (Keyboards), Geoff Murrell (Vocalist), Joe Simpson (Vocalist), Ali Park (Vocalist), Pete Farnell (Bass), Ade Miller (Lead Guitar), and Ian “Lofty” Gardner (Drums). Their first album CD, called Earthrise, started with sessions in Soundspace Studios in Cinderford however they quickly outgrew this and moved to the studios at Two Rivers Studios in Cheltenham where their first album was finalised. Termed a concept album and largely written by Mark and inspired by NASA photographs, Earthrise takes you on a journey that explores the trials, tribulations and dark days of a 30 year old man. Events in his life have made him stop and think and as a result he goes back to where it all started finally realising what he did not see first time around. At their debut performance in Two Rivers Studios recently and listening to the music from the album it clearly shows this is a group that have a great time producing great music. With clearly voiced vocals, melodious music and calm instrumental flows the music reveals a connection to different genres throughout the musical story and you can see the influence from Yes and Pink Floyd through to the Beatles, Dire Straits and many others. You can sample their music on Youtube by searching for ‘Spiral Planet’ and it is well worth the visit. They have revealed that they will be donating some sales from their Earthrise album to the PTSD Resolution Charity (Forces Veterans Mental Health). The group are now preparing their second album which is due out later this year. For 2019 the band will be performing with a five person line up and are looking for places to perform their original, creative and progressive rock music.

Sports Results & Reports Newent Hockey Club News and results from the Club. Newent Ladies 1st’s, who are in the top half of the West Premier League division 2A, won a hard fought game against Firebrands 2's. Some excellent hockey was played by both sides, especially the keepers, who kept the score to 0-0 right up until the last 90 seconds, when Newent converted a cross from the right to end the game the winners 1 - 0. Newent Ladies 2's lost 1 - 0 to Bristol University 2s and the Ladies 3's beat Cirencester 4 side to widen their position at the top of Severn Division 3. The Men's 1 had a convincing 3-1 win against Cardiff & Med C, but unfortunately the Men's 2 and 3's lost to Abergavenny and Cirencester C respectively. Further news, Karen Bubb the L1 Captain has been selected to play for Wales O40's this year which will mean international games in London and Rotterdam over the summer. This is a great honour for the club and probably a first as it appears the club has not had a player in the Club gain international honours at this level before.
