In the last decade one has seen a paradigm shift in the beauty services sector. From being a housewife turned beautician run parlors to large scale professionally run and organized salons, spas and multi chains. Our largely unorganized industry continues to be unorganized but a huge effort is underway by the stakeholders in the sector to give it a semblance of organizedness. The recent years has also seen an interest by the government to take notice of this sector for the sheer size and potential it offers in terms of generating small scale entrepreneurs and employment for young, especially women. The NSDC is also engaged in trying to include the professional hair and beauty sector into its sector skills council, all in a bid to set the ball rolling to make the sector organized and professional. We at New Age Salon and Spa welcome all such efforts and lend our support to them. Professionals from this industry need to play their part in this effort by being more in tune with collective happenings, networking at social platforms and creating solid associations and organizations to deliberate on the changes. Because change is inevitable, sooner or later standards will be set and educational criteria will be determined and those who do not meet them will be left behind. Reaching for the Stars World skills Competition 2013 is underway . The platform is huge as it is international. The competition is fierce as young 20 year olds give their best in their respective fields. The good news is that India is participating in the hair and beauty category. This is just the second year of our country participation in this category. And who would not want to win! The World skills competition is taking place in July 2013 at Leipzig-Germany. National selection round for the same was conducted in September 2012 in Mumbai and participants from various institutes and hair and beauty centers participants. Cut off age for participants being set below 22 years and it looked like India’s under-19 competition. The entire effort was being orchestrated by Biju Nair of LTA along with able support of Asha Hariharan of Beyond the Fringe. In June 2012 when NSDC partnered with LTA School of beauty to identify and prepare best under 21 talent in beauty skills for Worldskills competition, LTA went into fast action mode and started contacting several beauty training schools, salon/ parlours and associations to shortlist candidate for regional selection round to be held in September 2012. After much scouting 12 candidates were shortlisted and competition held between them. 3 candidates who got shortlisted for the

final selection round were Neha Chande, Raveena Bhatti and Chetna Rajput. In March this year the process was underway to select one from these 3 finalists. All three candidates had to demonstrate their skills live in front of hundreds of people who had come into see the spectacle .Huge 900 sqft of demonstration area was created complete with beauty equipments, water facility, changing area and jury discussion area. Skill management team from LTA were there 3 days ahead of the event to set up the entire infrastructure required to host one of the most spectacular skills on display. Nearly 16 hours of competition in various aspects of beauty therapy such as facial treatment, body therapy, make up, nail art, manicure and pedicure skills was true test of endurance as well. Reputed Jury members drawn from industry had tough task to evaluate candidates on nearly 96 parameters and what finally separated winner from the other two is merely 0.5 marks. Such was the intensity of competition and such was the passion to succeed among these candidates that all there were in tears one of joy and others of disappointment. Ultimately all agreed that only one could have been selected otherwise all three were winners. 2200 hours 132,000 minutes of practise, three rounds of elimination and extreme pressure all that is what 21 year old Raveena Bhatti had to go through before she could be declared as India’s best candidate to represent the nation at World skills competition to be held in Germany July 2013. Raveena, now the official Indian candidate for beauty skills would undergo several rounds of training on technical, physical, mental and presentation aspect of the competition within India and overseas for the final showdown. National Skills Development Corporation(NSDC) would fully sponsor India’s candidate trip to Germany and their lodging and boarding. They would also be involved in training to the extent providing mental conditioning camps and international etiquettes etc. It is indeed a proud moment for beauty industry in India to send out candidates who could not only meet eye to eye with the best in the world but also aspire to bring glory to India with a podium finish. Mr. Manoj Mehta, CMD Utility Print Pack is very excited about the upcoming International Beauty Mart exhibition which will cover Printing,Packaging labeling and Professional Beauty under its ambit. He talks freely about his participation in this 360 degree event and his expectations from the show to be held on 14-17 November at Greater Noida Expo Mart. Tell us something about yourself and your involvement in the packaging industry Utility PrintPack was established in 1991 with a single minded objective to provide packaging that attracts its customers and lets the product speak for itself on the shelf… and that is a BIG challenge. Today, the Utility PrintPack team has created a niche for itself in the luxury segment arena i.e. perfumes, cosmetics, personal care products, chocolates, fine liqueur, etc. You may say that we know what works in packaging!

What do you think is the idea behind having a combined exhibition of beauty and print pack ? Well, they both do complement one another. PAMEX is the only international exhibition for printing and allied machinery industry in India. So printers get a good picture of the latest technologies. While Beauty Mart exposes them to the newest, trendiest packaging materials, styles, shapes, sizes, etc. Therefore one can seamlessly integrate the two to his advantage.

Why does a professional beauty expo go well, hand in hand with a print pack and labeling exhibition? As I have mentioned earlier, nothing works in isolation. Say for instance, to create an international quality mascara packaging, one may need to use a

unique technology or material which may be available only with a select supplier. PAMEX 2013 is poised to give printers a fair lowdown on innovative machineries and more, that will provide a wider canvas for beauty packaging professionals

How important is packaging to the beauty sector manufacturing? What brand of shampoo or nail paint did you pick-up in the recent past and why? Chances are that it attracted your fancy among thousands of products on the shelf. That’s the magic of packaging. Often, it sells the brand even before one actually experiences the product.

What is the role played by packaging in successful marketing of a product? “Infinite”, I would say. Packaging indeed plays a significant role as a medium in the marketing mix, in advertising campaigns, as a pricing criterion, in defining the character of new products, as a setter of trends and as an instrument to create brand identity and shelf impact in all product groups. Largely, buying decisions are determined on basis on the factors such as: designs, shape and colour, eye catching appearance, functionality,

innovativeness, material used , communication ,multi-sensory appeal , value-addition for increased customer satisfaction. These may be effectively used to up the sales graph.

What about issues of environment and conservation, how do you address these? I agree that it is a major concern area. Presently, more and more industries, printers included, are looking at alternatives to conserve the ecosystem. As far as packaging goes, ‘sustainable packaging’ is fast gaining importance as it employs increased use of life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle assessment (LCA) to reduce environmental impact and ecological footprint. Also, alternative packaging materials are being considered. For example, researchers at the Agricultural Research Service are looking at using dairy-based films viz-a-viz. conventional petroleumbased packaging as instead of being made of synthetic polymers, these are composed of proteins like casein and whey, found in milk. Further, these films are biodegradable. Packaging using recycled materials and natural materials are being considered in a big way

What are the latest trends in packaging of cosmetics and beauty products? Costs, currencies, colors, shapes, technologies, materials and styling, are influencing packaging in the cosmetics, fragrance and personal care industry. A lot of beauty packaging is also concept driven. An exotic natural, herbal cream, for instance,may use an old, world glass container wrapped-up with jute. Alternative it may be encased in a handmade paper box that exudes a raw, earthen feel. It would all depend on the brand positioning, idea, design, price bracket, shelf space and target group habits/preferences.

The exhibition has already created a big buzz. May I add, the last one (PAMEX) was a huge success. This 360 degree event will cover all segments of the beauty industry under one roof. Hence it will be a magnet for everybody and anybody concerned with beauty. Its visitor profile will comprise of professionals, manufacturers, trainers, service providers, traders, students as well as the consumers of the industry. And not just beauty products, the Mart will also showcase Beauty and Wellness trends, services, packaging and labeling solutions for its products, and more. The Mart is also poised to feature special events such as product demos, orientations, usage and applications, etc. So, this edition is something everybody is positively looking forward to.

What are your major clients from the beauty industry, what is the kind of work you have done with them? We have vast national and international customer base, we cater mainly perfumes ,cosmetics, Chocolates n FMCG business. Beyond the Fringe is Asha Hariharan’s flagship salon, adjudged as one of Asia’s best salon in many competitions. She has won several prestigious hair awards for her exemplary work in the field of hair color. With over two decades of work and experience in the ever growing hair and beauty industry Asha introduces herself to New Age Salon and Spa as an artist exemplar and a passionate educator.

Below are the excerpts of the interview Where did you grow up?

I grew up in HongKong. My parents took me there when I was a year old. I studied and I graduated over there. I guess being a hair dresser you are always a little, weird right from the time you are little so my Dad obviously thought I was going to get married to some punk, and he wanted me to go back to India. I came to India and spent about 2 years before going back. I even started work, during my stay in India – that’s where I found my husband. We became really good friends and we kept in touch . But after marriage I went back to study in Paris and London for a few years and we actually officially came back to India in 2000 when I opened my salon.

Your education?

I graduated in Economics, but apart from that all my studies have been related to beauty including formulation,

make-up and colour . Colour is something that I have been associated with always. Colour was something that had interested me even when I was a little girl. Later when I grew up I did very specialized courses just in colour and colour molecules and things like that and I of course appreciated the art side of it. Because of this background, I understood colour much better not in terms of just the artistic expression but in terms of its mechanical workings. I completely work with colour whether it is in terms of make-up or hair.

When did you decide that the professional beauty industry is where you want to be?

My inspiration was my mom. She was the deciding factor for me. A lot of people think that if you are someone who flunks or someone who doesn’t do well in school then you become a

hair dresser. This is not just the case in India but it is also the case in a lot of countries abroad. My Dad who is a marine engineer wanted me to be one. I was a good student, and I did well academically. But when I used to look at my mom and I used to think she was so perfect. She was always well turned out, I always found Yardley on her table and she had the most exotic cosmetics even 30 years ago. She inspired me to be what I am today.

You have been fairly successful in India. Your name is recognized all over the country. What do you attribute your growth and your success to?

I think using the word passion is an understatement. Truly I am quiet obsessed. I can’t go to sleep without having gone through a few hair magazines. Something happens, even if I look at a picture 20 times over, I suddenly realize that I am studying it. Loads of hard work, because this is such a fantastic industry where if you’ve learn’t something 5 years ago, it is outdated today. The concept remains the same, you’re talking about hair, you’re talking about skin. But the way we approach things changes be it in terms of products, in terms of treatment it renews itself all the time, I think a structured way of studying, an artistic way of learning, tremendous amount of humility, never taking anything for granted and ensuring that you will never really know everything is the way to go in the beauty world. You just have to reinvent yourself and your approach to beauty all the time.

Having travelled all over the country, what are your observations about India specific to this industry, the good and the bad picture?

First the good things. I think India is such a splurge of colours. We Indians take it for granted and are a little arrogant because we don’t realize the kind of heritage we have. Nobody needs to come and teach an Indian about the culture of colours, the culture of splendor. We have it all. Even a person who is not associated to cosmetic beauty, will still have the most fascinating colours in their wardrobe, because that is a gift to us. powder, the lipstick. These are 2 things that India has been using since I don’t know when. The beauty industry needs to grow a little faster than its consumer. The consumer has grown so much because he has so much exposure. We are not just hair dressers, but we are actually protagonists of our clients wellbeing. We need to have a fashion angle, we need to have an opinion of how to compare international fashion with Indian fashion. We need to take a place of pride. We have too many princesses in the industry

and sometimes that is self limiting. You need to continue growing and you need to really study and keep pace with the speed at which the Indian consumer is growing.

Who are the people you admire?

I am an emotional person and I admire a lot of people like Karl Lagerfeld, my teachers Frederick Taliarge, Christian Chavo who work, breathe, eat beauty.

How do you spend your leisure time?

I love being at home, it is my ultimate resort. In my leisure time, I do a lot of reading and I like to cook because my husband and I are foodies.

What do you want others to know about you?

India. This brilliant examination allows you to sit either for a silver, gold or platinum level of examination so you can continuously upgrade yourself for the next few years.

The ITech Certification is UK qualification for make-up. These certifications allow you to get to that level where you can also become a consultant.

There are 2 kinds of people. For those who don’t know me, it doesn’t really matter to me. And for those who know me, I think I am quiet transparent and I would like them to know that I do not have any hidden agendas. What you see is what you get.

Tell us something about your new academy. I am very excited about the academy and we are looking forward to doing fantastic things. We have managed to get the ITech Certification and the IHB Certification and have launched the Teachers Training Course. This will be the next level in education for us. We are already doing a lot of colour work and make-up because we teach only hair and make-up.

The IHB, which is an International Hair Dressing and Beauty Course, is part of OMC. The big news is that students can take the exam in any language of your choice this works very well for

Refreshing s l a i c a F r e m Sum IN THE HEAT of the summer, what better way to pamper yourself than with a facial! Here are a few of my do-it-yourself recipes and some great recipes that were sent over by a helpful reader named Desiree. Start out with nice, clean skin & make sure you aren’t allergic to any of these foods before you begin. Enjoy!

Rose Petal Facial This romantically-scented recipe replenishes moisture and tones parched skin. • On a freshly-washed face, pat a cotton cosmetic pad soaked with one tablespoon of Greek yogurt and one teaspoon of honey for one minute. Rinse clean with warm water. • Then, take the petals off of two roses and grind them in a shallow bowl with a mortar or spoon. Mix in one teaspoon, each, of soy oil and flour. • When the mixture is thoroughly blended, add three teaspoons of water. • Apply the mixture to your face with a fan- or foundation brush and leave it on for 30 minutes. • Rinse off thoroughly, and finish with a light layer of your normal moisturizer.

Grapes & Honey Mask This antioxidant-rich, skin-tightening regime is ideal for sun-damaged skin with visible lines. • Wash your face with an exfoliating blend of one part natural yogurt and one part uncooked oatmeal. Rinse clean with warm water. • Use a spoon or mortar to smush five unpeeled grapes into a puree, and add one tablespoon of honey. • Apply the paste to your face with your fingers, and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. • Blot away excess water, and apply sweet almond oil to restore moisture to drier patches.

Avocado & Pepper Facial Combat sagging skin and age spots with this Vitamin A-heavy recipe. • Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice and three heaping teaspoons of powdered milk into a paste. Blend well. • Wash your face with the mixture, and rinse clean. • As if you’re preparing guacamole, mix one ripe avocado with one teaspoon of a crushed red pepper (the vegetable, not the seasoning) in a bowl. • When thoroughly mixed, apply the mask to your face, and let sit for 20 minutes. • Rinse off, and lightly massage sweet almond oil into dry spots.

Apple Mask An apple a day...keeps your skin glowing. This mix of apples, honey, and milk helps restore your skin to its natural pH balance. • Create a mixture of oatmeal and milk by combining a quarter cup of dry oatmeal with splashes of milk until it becomes mushy. • Apply the paste to a clean face, using it to wash off any extra makeup residue. Rinse clean with warm water. • Using a hand mixer or food processor, blend one whole apple (quartered, with removed) with one teaspoon of milk, one teaspoon of honey, and one egg yolk. • Apply the puree to your face, and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. • When your face is clean, rub a thin coat of honey all over your mug. Rinse it off after five minutes with warm water, and pat your face dry with a clean cloth.

The Refresher Ideal for dry or sensitive skin types, this gentle mask brightens skin without harsh ingredients. • Exfoliate your face with an equal mixture of oatmeal and yogurt. Rinse clean. • Crush one tomato and mix it with the juice of half of a lemon until you have a creamy paste. • Apply this to your face, and leave it on for 20 minutes, allowing the acidity of the tomatoes and lemon to deep-clean your skin. • Rinse your face clean. • Mix together a cream of your daily facial moisturizer with a dollop of honey. Apply to skin and let it sit for five minutes before rinsing.

Tell us something about yourself? I am a freelance hairstylist and have been in this industry since 2001. I did my formal training with NALINI & YASMIN, they sent to Malaysia for short courses in hair and color. I worked with them from 2001 till 2006 end and post marriage in 2007, I started freelancing. I offer services for both men and women. My specialty is Straightening and Kids haircuts. I do everything including Hair Cuts, Color, Highlights, Straightening / Smoothening /Relaxing, Hair treatments like Hair spa, Protein treatments. I have clients from all walks of life starting from toddlers to youngsters to senior citizens . Some of my celebrity clients include Ahmad Khan(film

How big is your team? I am a one person team. I collaborate with a local salon called Hair Disturbia in Lokandwala.

How difficult is it to visit clients premises? Carrying your tools, products etc, commuting? Frankly I don’t take on clients too far from my home. I work in Lokandwala, Versova, Juhu and Malad. I travel by my car so have no difficulty commuting or carrying my equipment .

How do you handle difficult clients? People can be difficult sometimes but in the end there is always a way to please them with good service, good hair styles and tips to avoid hair problems.


When I was working in the salon there were times when difficult clients came along , my seniors would push me to go forward and take them on because they didn’t want to handle them. For example , there was a lady who would come every week religiously . She wouldn’t wash her hair the whole week and would come to get her 5 mm hair growth re colored and then want

Why did you choose this instead of a salon practice? My husband works in the merchant navy and I often go sailing with him around the world .This is the only way I can still do what I love and be with him most months of the year. It is good to work on your own time and your own terms.

How safe is for a young girl to go to someone’s house alone? Safety is a big issue, so whenever I go to someone’s house I make sure my family knows exactly where I am and I always ask new clients “who has referred them or where did they hear of me “.

How big is this mobile segment of the profession? Everyone has hair and everyone needs a hair cut, so this business will never die .It will always be in demand.

Any experience you would like to share - good or bad:

a fabulous blow-dry after that. She was very particular about what she wanted done to her hair and was real finicky. She always wanted me to do her work as I dealt with her diplomatically. Then there was this one guy who would have beach blonde hair. He was and very rude but I could handle him. On the lighter side, I have a labrador at home, she is very cute and docile and when I have to give haircuts to kids I call them to my house .They easily get distracted with the dog and allow me to cut their hair with ease.

Any disadvantages you feel as compared to a salon professional? Beauty is one industry that is always on the go, trends keep on changing. To keep upto date one needs to keep learning. In big salons there is constant training and learning , be it new products, techniques, new equipment. They also get trainers from abroad to conduct workshops for their staff. I miss all of that.

Are you a member of any Industry Association? I am a member of HIP. They conduct one day sessions, so that helps me keep abreast.

How do you get information about new products and services and learning new techniques?

It is difficult to keep a track of all the new products, hence once in a while I go to a professional beauty shop and take a look at what is new , ask questions about products which are best selling. This gives me an idea as to what is really giving result rather than just the explanations of what it does. Once I have my list of products I do more research about them on the internet.

Any plans of settling down ? Career growth? Nope, I like the pace at which I am going. Career growth is tremendous in this industry, .... one can get into the glamour industry and start doing shoots, it is very well paying. One can make anything from 5000 a day to no limit on shoots with big movie stars.

Bridging Beauty To Business The salon industry shows potential for many fold growth but staff training is the key. Franchise India organised the 2nd edition of the Indian Salon Congress 2013 at The Claridges, Surajkund, Faridabad, on 24-25 March 2013. The Congress brought together leading names in the industry like Jawed Habib, Aashmeen Munjal and Sachidanand Kamat. According to the report launched at the show, the Indian salon industry is expected to be doubled, i.e, about $4 billion, in the next two years. Also, the report highlighted that the organised salon market is expected to grow from 25 per cent (currently) to 30 per cent by 2015. Ritu Marya, Editor-in-Chief, Franchise India Media, said, “The industry is now getting more serious from just being a cosy business. Evolution is visible in the industry, but institutional funders are still finding it difficult to buy a plan. So in order to expand the funds available, business plans should become more strategic.” Emphasizing the need for creating long lasting brands Jawed Habib said “A customer should not come to an individual but to a brand, and it is time for our industry to move in that direction. And to create a brand, you need highly qualified people,” .He also emphasised on the need for greater specialisation in the salon industry rather than offering a wide range of services under one roof. One of the key areas in focus was education and skills training for the beauty personnel. The training was imparted by Dr. Sangeeta Chauhan who is the President of AIHBA and Mr. Vijay Bhardwaj, the Treasurer AIHBA.
