Still others are manifested by a dedicated faculty that inspires students within the classroom and beyond, caring

for them long after they have graduated.

The characteristics that distinguish a Newark Academy education intertwine each and every day, culminating in a rare learning experience from which our students benefit and grow. Throughout the following pages you will discover how your generous contributions sustain Newark Academy’s entire community and contribute to the distinguishing characteristics that empower Newark Academy students for a lifetime.

From the Head of School

N

ewark Academy is alive with intellectual passion, diverse talent and intense exploration. Our capacity to provide an exceptional educational experience, both inside the classroom and beyond, is due in large part to the outstanding support of our parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and friends. For the second year in a row, annual fund contributions exceeded $1-million, demonstrating our community’s remarkable commitment to our students and faculty. That enthusiastic support enhances the distinctive, intellectually rigorous and vibrant culture that has characterized Newark Academy since its inception. I extend my profound gratitude to all who have helped to create this extraordinary environment of academic excellence.

Donald M. Austin

From the Chairman of the Board of Trustees

O

n behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce that Newark Academy is in a position of unique financial strength. It is both reassuring and rewarding to conclude the year marked with the highest number of applicants, the highest enrollment and the highest endowment in Newark Academy’s history. We continue to enjoy financial stability even as many educational institutions, public and private, struggle to keep pace with the ongoing economic challenges that face our nation. To me, this speaks volumes about the immense generosity of our Newark Academy community. Thank you for sharing our belief that the core of greatness in American society lies within great schools and the ability to develop great “thought leaders” to guide the next generation. (signature to come) Jonathan D. Olesky ’74 3

Newark Academy Parents Association Every parent is a valued member of the Newark Academy Parents Association (NAPA), which provides numerous opportunities to contribute to activities that benefit and enrich the Newark Academy experience. NAPA sponsors guest speakers, book clubs, newsletters and fundraising events. Dedicated volunteers generously donate their time to assist the school during the busy admission season and to help in the NA bookstore. In addition, NAPA hosts fundraising events such as the annual Red & Black, a gala event that provides support for various academic and athletic programs, grants faculty wishes, and funds initiatives to promote faculty professional development. In the 2010-11 academic year NAPA and its members contributed more than $100,000 to help support a diverse range of projects and opportunities for NA students and teachers.

Newark Academy first appealed to its alumni base for financial support in 1903. Alumni gifts made in that year enabled the school to purchase property on First Street, where Newark Academy would reside for nearly 35 years. The 1903 Cup is awarded to the NA Class from the last 50 years that most embodies alumni generosity as measured by the percentage of the class that contributes to the Annual Fund. This year the honor goes to the Class of 1969 with 43 percent participation.

Congratulations to the Class of 1993!

Newark Academy’s motto, “ad lumen,” expresses the mission of the school: toward enlightenment. Because strong participation in the Annual Fund is essential to furthering NA’s mission, the Ad Lumen Award is presented in recognition of the NA class that posts the largest percentage increase in contributions to the Annual Fund in a given year. The Class of 1993 posted a nine percent increase in participation this past year.

Many donors have generously made the decision to include Newark Academy in their wills and estate planning and have become members of our 1774 Society. If you are interested in learning more about this, please contact Lisa Grider, Director of Institutional Advancement, at (973) 992-7000, ext. 320.
