2021 - 2022 Summary of Giving 1

Dear Members of the Newark Academy Community,

The 2021-2022 school year was a challenging one marked by the ongoing uncertainties of the global pandemic, but the year was also a testament to the remarkable strength and resilience of the Newark Academy community. Despite threats of continued disruption, NA students thrived inside and outside of the classroom, learning without interruption, celebrating the many joyful traditions that are a hallmark of our school, and reveling in the return of large-scale, in-person gatherings.

Our success would not have been possible without your support and the support of the entire Newark Academy community — students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, institutional donors and many others. We greatly appreciate your generosity and commitment to our school. Through this Impact Report, we chart Newark Academy’s many accomplishments during the 2021-22 school year.

Your donations helped Newark Academy to return to normalcy and uphold its standard of excellence in a multitude of ways. The newly

Sincerely,

renovated Coraci Performance Hall became home to vibrant Morning Meetings and inspiring arts performances. We welcomed our graduates and NA families back to campus, where they enjoyed Homecoming and Alumni Reunion festivities. We also celebrated outstanding milestones in the arts and athletic programs, with our jazz band, Chameleon, earning its 11th straight New Jersey Association for Jazz Education title and NA Athletics capturing eight state championship titles.

Newark Academy’s Annual Fund reached a historic milestone of $1.46 million in 2021-22, and our fundraising activity totaled $2.6 million.

As you will see in this report, your donations provide a wide variety of essential resources, including financial aid for our families. Support from your donations allows us to enroll talented students for whom a Newark Academy education might not otherwise be possible.

Once again, thank you for your many hours of volunteer leadership, for your financial support, and for all of the countless ways that you have sustained and strengthened our school community.

After taking first place at the District Tournament, the boys’ fencing team went on to become state champions with an exciting 16 to 11 win over Ridge High School. “No matter if this team gets down early, they’re willing to keep digging until they get that win,” Head Coach Dan Bailey-Yavonditte told NJ.com.

3D Printing Takes Off

In Debra Tavares’s Interactive Investigations in Science course, Middle School students use 3D printing to tackle real-world problems by creating and printing a sustainable city that meets human needs while avoiding all waste. “With computer-aided design software and 3D printing … if you can think it, you can design it and you can 3D model it. Essentially, you can make a new reality,” Deb said.

Community in Coraci

The newly rebuilt, state-of-the-art, 700-seat Coraci Performance Hall played a central role in bringing the NA community back together during the 2021-2022 school year. After a hiatus of large-scale school gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coraci Performance Hall helped promote a sense of community and joyfulness through Morning Meeting laughs, incredible arts performances and inspiring speakers.

At Newark Academy, students have the time to develop core skills around the Six C’s: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, character and cultural competency throughout the school year. These skills will serve them well in the classroom, within the community, and in their careers.

Planned Giving: The Ultimate Win-Win

Would you like to make a gift to Newark Academy while simultaneously protecting your family?

Sounds too good to be true, but alumnus William “Will” Green ’69 showed us a creative, win-win strategy.

By choosing to make Newark Academy the owner and beneficiary of his whole life insurance policy, Will was able to take an immediate tax deduction and in the future, Newark Academy will receive a gift of Will’s life insurance proceeds. “My family has always supported Newark Academy and believes in its mission. This is a final way, for my generation, to complete its support of Newark Academy so that the next generation can continue.”

If you are interested in exploring this planned giving tool or other related structured giving possibilities which might benefit both Newark Academy and you, please call or email Newark Academy’s Director of Advancement Services Barbara Sine at 973-992-7000 x362 or bsine@newarka.edu. newarka.giftplans.org

Ways of Giving

There are many ways you can provide financial support for the Newark Academy experience. Staff in the Office of Institutional Advancement can assist in creating a giving plan to meet your philanthropic objectives. For information, please call (973) 992-7000, ext. 362.

CHECKS

Gifts made by check are the most common form of support. Checks should be made payable to Newark Academy and sent directly to the Office of Institutional Advancement.

PLEDGES

Donors making a major gift to Newark Academy have the option of paying their total gift commitment over a three to five-year period. When choosing this option, donors are required to sign a written gift commitment agreement and will then receive annual pledge reminders for payment.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many corporations match their employees’ philanthropic contributions. Matching gifts allow you to double or even triple your gift to the Academy. Donors wishing to take advantage of their company’s matching gift program should visit Newark Academy’s website to confirm eligibility and link directly to your company’s matching gift website.

DIGITAL GIFTS

NA accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Cards, as well as other forms of digital currency (Venmo, Paypal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Bitcoin). Donors can make their gift directly through the Newark Academy website (www.newarka.edu) or by contacting Barbara Sine (bsine@newarka.edu) in the Office of Institutional Advancement for more information.

STOCK

Gifts of appreciated securities provide an opportunity to benefit Newark Academy with advantageous tax benefits for the donor. Donors considering a gift of stock should contact Barbara Sine (bsine@newarka.edu) in the Office of Institutional Advancement for more information.

PLANNED OR DEFERRED GIFTS

Donors interested in supporting Newark Academy may choose to do so through a deferred gift. Such gifts require written documentation of the donor’s intention to include Newark Academy in the donor’s will or to make Newark Academy a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. Other options for deferred gifts include charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Donors should speak to a financial advisor for guidance as to which form of deferred gift is most beneficial. All donors who provide written documentation of their intention to make a deferred gift are given membership in Newark Academy’s 1774 Society. Please contact Barbara Sine (bsine@newarka.edu) in the office of Institutional Advancement for more
