Dear Friends of Newark Academy, During the 2011-2012 academic year, Newark Academy charted new territory. Among our endeavors: we sought feedback from the NA community regarding our new strategic plan via the NA Jam; launched our inaugural June Term, the two-week period at the end of the spring semester devoted to extensive, experiential learning; and embarked on making the most significant physical changes to our campus since moving Newark Academy to Livingston half a century ago.

The commitment of our donor community has been unwavering as we explore new initiatives that will continue to distinguish the NA experience and instill in our students the three tenets of our mission: a passion for learning, a standard of excellence and a generosity of spirit.

The ongoing generosity of our school community demonstrates to current and prospective students and families that the benefits of a Newark Academy education extend well beyond the years spent on campus. The NA community is an ever-growing family, dedicated to sustaining an environment that nourishes intellectual development and academic excellence.

We are profoundly grateful for your continued support.

A Standard of Excellence

NA’s jazz program took to the national stage for the first time as finalists in the Mingus Competition and the Essentially Ellington Competition run by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jazz Director Julius Tolentino said, “As Wynton Marsalis congratulated me at Avery Fischer Hall, he commented on how impressed he was with our group and how young they were. He also said he expects great things from us in the future.”

Troy Sutton ’13 constructed a working wind turbine on the roof of Newark Academy. Troy worked with robotics and engineering club advisor Robert Bitler on the research and design of the project, then constructed the entire piece by hand. The goal is to convert kinetic energy from the wind into mechanical energy that can produce electricity for the school.

A Generosity of Spirit

Sixteen juniors and seniors stayed up all night for the bi-annual round-the-clock playwriting event, part of the two-year IB Theatre/Advanced Acting curriculum. The students performed their three new short plays at the end of the marathon playwriting event. The plays ranged from gently serious to outlandishly humorous and all were acted impressively and directed carefully.

Three hundred students, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees and parents joined in the conversation or observed from the virtual wings at NA’s first online Jam. The community conversation about the school’s future yielded hundreds of thoughtful comments and ideas. The information garnered from this event helped inform Newark Academy’s strategic planning process, which will guide and serve the school for the next five years.

The annual “Pond Study” teaches students how to work together toward a common goal that is realistic and relevant to them and their surroundings. Sixth grade student teams surveyed the abiotic and biotic features of NA’s retention pond. Scientific research included soil core sampling, perimeter pond mapping, and investigating microorganisms grown on artificial substrata for isolation and identification using digital microscopy. 2011-2012 Report on Giving

The 1903 Cup

Congratulations to the Class of 1962! Newark Academy first appealed to its alumni base for financial support in 1903. Alumni gifts made in that year enabled the school to purchase property on First Street, where Newark Academy would reside for nearly 35 years. The 1903 Cup is awarded to the NA class from the last 50 years whose giving embodies alumni generosity as measured by the percentage of the class that contributes to the Annual Fund. This year, the Cup is awarded to the Class of 1962 with 49% of the class making a gift to the Annual Fund. Thanks to Class Rep Bud D’Avella ’62 for his support and leadership.

The Ad Lumen Award

Congratulations to the Class of 2007! Newark Academy’s motto, “ad lumen,” expresses the mission of the school: toward enlightenment. Because strong participation in the Annual Fund is essential to furthering NA ’s mission, the Ad Lumen Award is presented in recognition of the NA class that posts the largest percentage increase in contributions to the Annual Fund in a given year. The Class of 2007 posted an impressive increase of 150%, going from 6% participation to 15% in a single year. Thanks to the Class of 2007 – we hope the momentum gathered in their 5th reunion year will continue.

A Generosity of Spirit

Newark Academy’s School Council conducted its 8th Annual 5K Run for FOP. This benefit has a special place in the hearts of members of the NA community and the continued support for this event from students, parents, alumni and friends has demonstrated a strong commitment to find a cure for Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), a rare disease that affects a beloved member of our community, Ian Cali ’08. A collective total of more than $100,000 has been raised to support the Ian L. Cali Fund for research at the University of Pennsylvania.
