International TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS FOR THE PRO-AUDIO PROFESSIONAL

MERGING TECHNOLOGIES ANEMAN

ANEMAN is a groundbreaking new technology for audio and broadcast allowing users to patch audio, remotely V ÌÀ `iÛ Vià > ` iÛi V w }ÕÀi iÌÜ À switches more easily than ever. ANEMAN isn’t limited to RAVENNA, Dante or AES67. If you write a plugin, then prodducts can be controlled and routed using ANEMAN. The basic costs for use and implementation are completely free. Most engineers patche network audio but it’s a tiresome task, fraught with incompatibilities. Setting up streams with RAVENNA is time-consuming. Dante ties you to a single programme with only one function, you still

need other software for device and switch V w }ÕÀ>Ì > ` i } iiÀà V ÃÌ> Ì Þ switch between apps and web pages. ANEMAN removes this complexity and offers a platform for further features. No other technology combines patching of >Õ` ] `iÛ Vià V ÌÀ > ` V w }ÕÀ>Ì v the network. ANEMAN is shipping now and was adopted by eight manufacturers in as many weeks after launch. More features are coming soon including pre-amp gain control, AES70 (OCA) support, infrastructure monitoring and improved security. ANEMAN software is free. Manufacturers

02

can also incorporate it into their own software, to save programme switching. An ANEMAN plugin makes your product visible and controllable, becoming part of the ecosystem. Archwave wrote theirs in only 15 days. ANEMAN has an enlightened development model. It will always be free for manufacturers and end-users. A paid enterprise version offers additional features and support to sustain the project. An increasing number of plugins expand ANEMAN’s scope. Development is ‘partially open’, ensuring that it is open but also agile to adapt to changing industry needs. www.merging.com

A convenient status LED indicates when the microphone is streaming audio. Via Apogee’s MetaRecorder app,

03

for example, the user can conveniently control the microphone gain and activate functions such as a rumble reducer, overload eliminator or hiss reducer. The HANDMIC Digital microphone is supplied complete with two connection cables (2m, Micro USB to Lightning, and Micro USB to USB), a microphone clamp, solid table stand, pouch and quick guide –ready for field use, podcasts and voice-over. www.sennheiser.com

SONIFEX LTD

SONIFEX AVN-PXH12 2 X 12 CHANNEL MIXER MONITOR

Over the last year, Sonifex has been working with a major UK TV broadcaster to solve a problem that they and many other broadcasters are facing. With audio moving to the network infrastructure allowing hundreds of audio sources to be available, how do you easily monitor them in a product which is simple to use? With a thousand audio sources on their network, distributed through a large router/mixer, they wanted a device at each position in their main Production Gallery/Control Room to monitor multiple audio sources either individually or as a mix. Sonifex created the AVN-PXH12 at just 1U in size, which can monitor up to 24 audio feeds from the network.

Sources are mainly AES67 networked audio but there is also provision for a few local analogue inputs. The AVN-PXH12 solves the problem of how to check and monitor so many AoIP audio sources easily. It is a world first – it can simply and effectively simultaneously monitor and mix up to 24 AES67 AoIP sources in a compact 1U rack to a speaker/headphone combination quickly and intuitively. Features Full RAVENNA and AES67 compatibility and can be used in SMPTE ST2110 compatible projects. It can receive AES67 compliant Dante audio streams, when set up with SAP.Mute and solo button to

04

audition single or multiple channels. Instantaneous ‘Normal’ and ‘Alternate’ input switching (<1msec accuracy) for direct comparison. User benefits Extremely easy to use. Confidence display on each channel for ‘at-aglance’ monitoring. Headphone outputs, physical outputs and built in speaker with separate volume control. Summary Whilst the end-product is simple to use, it hides enormous complexity, giving users the ability to easily monitor networked audio signals. www.sonifex.co.uk

PROJECTS DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT LED

Working alongside the overall broadcast consultant, Wave Science Technology, Projects Deparment did the consultancy and design for three studios at the new YouTube spaces in London. Among many bespoke solutions was the need for high quality LED soft lighting. YouTube wanted a replacement for Ì i ÃÌÕ` yÕ ÀiÃVi ÌÃ > ` Ü>Ã >««Þ to give up the negatives, primarily tube aging requiring relamping at regular intervals, but not if it meant taking on a new set of drawbacks. A small number of other companies also offer remote phosphor lights with very good colour performance. These offerings produce nice soft light, but have little or no beam pattern. AMINO COMMUNICATIONS AMINO ENABLE

Amino ENABLE is a virtual set-top box (STB) software platform for new and legacy hardware, allowing operators to provide a consistent user experience across their customer base regardless of device. It does this by transforming their legacy STBs so that they can run the same advanced user interface on both existing and new customer premise equipment. By ‘upcycling’ existing STBs through virtualisation, thus eliminating installation and new device costs, ENABLE saves operators millions of dollars in capital expenditure and helps them keep pace with consumer demands. ENABLE is deployed as an interoperable à vÌÜ>Ài `iw i` >LÃÌÀ>VÌ >ÞiÀ] } devices into the middleware and backend systems of a service delivery platform. With an open API and modular design, ENABLE allows seamless integration with CAS, DRM, STM management and HTML5 browsers. Tried and tested as the software core for Amino VIEW, the world’s most deployed IP STB, ENABLE is now available to be deployed on third-party STB hardware platforms, so that all operators can futureproof their offerings and deliver innovative, higher value services across all devices. These include OTT TV, SVoD, multiscreen user experience, and UHD video – along Ü Ì > Õ«`>Ìi` > ` Õ w i` ÕÃiÀ ÌiÀv>Vi across each customer base. iÞ Ƃ Li iw Ìà `i ÃÌÀ>Ìi` through initial deployments with Cincinnati Bell and PCCW Media include: • Combat churn and grow subscribers

– boosting both retention and acquisition, with operators showing more than 200 per cent subscriber growth • Increase return on capital – eliminating need to replace legacy STBs and saving millions of dollars on device and installation costs, cutting as much as 80 per cent off upgrading expense

21

• Rapid time to market – upgrading STBs with software, rather than simply replacing them, means deployment of new services and capabilities takes a quarter of the time, so a hardware swap-out that would normally take a year is cut to just three months www.aminocom.com

IMAGINE COMMUNICATIONS

SELENIO NETWORK PROCESSOR

Selenio Network Processor (SNP) is the industry’s first pure-IP processing solution. A next-generation, FPGAbased signal processing platform, SNP handles uncompressed UHD signals based on the SMPTE ST 2110 specification for transporting media over IP networks. The high-density 1RU solution enables media companies to seamlessly bridge SDI and IP networks, while easily meeting UHD requirements in live production. By processing uncompressed UHD signals over IP in conformance with SMPTE ST 2110 (the industry-consensus standard for the transmission of video, audio and meta data over IP networks), SNP enables media companies to process high-quality video signals to meet all customer preferences – without requiring a mezzanine compression

scheme or relying on nonstandard, proprietary hardware. The SNP is optimised for UHD production via redundant 100Gb Ethernet network connections, each capable of delivering eight uncompressed UHD signals in each direction. Support for these highcapacity network connections eliminates the requirement to compress UHD signals, improving overall efficiency, and contributing to space and powerconsumption savings, while preserving picture quality and system latency. The SNP offers all the capabilities required in today’s complex production environments, including advanced audio processing and HD-UHD and HD-3G up/ down-conversion, as well as the HDR adaptations and conversions required for integrating UHD and HD signals.

28

It also provides critical synchronisation and timing functions, overseeing the integration of new signals into the production environment and assuring the optimal timing of SMPTE 2110 signals for interoperability with all other compliant equipment. Ideal for fast-paced mobile production industry, the SNP features four integral processing blocks, each of which can be assigned a separate application and reprogrammed on the fly. The multipurpose nature and quick-configuration capabilities of the SNP significantly reduces equipment requirements and enables production companies to respond to the requirements of the current job, and then quickly reconfigure to tackle future assignments. www.imaginecommunications.com

PAYWIZARD

PAYWIZARD AGILE AND MASSIVE AXIS

Visitors to IBC2017 were introduced to the brand-new strategic partnership between Paywizard and Massive Interactive; showcasing a data-driven solution that helps OTT operators to create personalised user experiences to maximise acquisition, grow ARPU and reduce churn. The customer centric solution uses rich data insight and predictive analytics to deliver a more targeted user experience and optimise engagement with an OTT service at each of the eight key ‘Decision Moments’ in the customer journey: Find, Join, Consume, Upgrade, Downgrade, Bill, Leave and Win Back. The customer experience element of a provider-subscriber relationship has become the most critical consideration for OTT services today. Global research published by Paywizard reveals that failure to understand a customer – and to provide a consistently positive customer experience as a result – can have a fatal impact on a subscriber relationship. Together, the two companies have combined the power of both the Paywizard Agile and Massive AXIS platforms to enable providers to deliver the right content, offers and assistance at the perfect time – engaging their subscribers with a service that is most relevant to them. Through the Decision Moments dashboard within Paywizard Agile, an OTT operator can leverage data analytics to track each subscriber interactions and segment their subscriber base, then trigger a change in the front-end UI via Massive AXIS depending on a customer’s stage in their journey. Under ‘Leave’ for example,

*>ÞÜ â>À`½Ã «Ài` VÌ Ûi > > Þà à `i Ì w ià customers indicating a high propensity to churn and recommends package options relevant to that individual. Massive then takes that insight and tailors the front end to display personalised package options, which reduces the likelihood that the subscriber will churn.

This detailed, data-driven personalisation from Paywizard’s combined solution strengthens the subscriber’s engagement with the service – and therefore delivers an exceptional customer experience – allowing any operator to achieve optimum commercialisation. www.paywizard.com

DOPCHOICE SNAPBOX

Flexible LED panels, light tiles and tube-shaped fixtures have become economical LED lighting sources. While these fixtures supply plenty of light output, they lack the softer quality of a professional modelling light. Ultimate upgrade: To solve this, DoPchoice, makers of light shaping tools, intro’s the first no hassle softbox just for these fixtures. Utilising DoPchoice’s patented self-tightening Snap Technology, Snapbox quickly unfolds and instantly deploys into a rectangular shape creating a smooth diffusion box that mounts over standard frames to soften and control light emitted from raw LEDs. No hassle: Front and sides feature quick hook’n loop attachment of diffusion fabrics. The front diffusion panel is made of popular Magic Cloth stretched across the rectangular front for even, optimum diffusion. No spill: The sides control spill via self-attaching fabric panels. Each comes with two sets of interchangeable side panels. One, made of Magic Cloth, controls ambient light and the second is an opaque black/metallic fabric with a reflective layer on the inside, to amplify light, and a black layer that cuts spill.

Easy mounting: Snapbox simply attaches to any given light. Its corner eyelets are handy for flying it overhead on safety cables. Alternatively, the corner elastic straps can be stretched over a standard Frost Frame/ flag, and mount with standard grip equipment. Instant diffusion trio: The Snapbox is available to fit a variety of brands including: LiteGear, Alladdin, BB&S, Cineroid, Fomex, etc. Available in three sizes, the Snapbox 4x2 measures 123cm long, 62cm wide and 32cm high, and weighs just 2.75kg/6lbs. The 4x4 is 123cm long by 122cm wide by 32cm high and weighs 3.7kg/8.1lbs. The ample 8x4 reaches 209cm long, 122cm wide, and 31cm high, yet weighs barely 8kg/17.6lbs. All are a very slim 30cm/11.8in deep. Snap on grids: DoPchoice Snapgrids snap up and hook‘n loop on to direct light and control spill. www.dopchoice.com

NET INSIGHT

STCC LIVE APP WITH SYE

Prior to the STCC (Scandinavian Touring Car Championship) race on 17th June, Net Insight announced that STCC would use its live OTT Sye technology for live content, a new STCC Live App, planned to optimise the fan experience during the race. The STCC Live App offered viewers on iOS devices a complimentary and unique, immersive experience, getting access to driver cams, driver information, the produced feed, and guest speakers, all in one application. Sye’s ability to deliver synchronised video feeds over OTT, with ultralow fixed delay and low bandwidth requirement, was key in creating the STCC Live App. With Net Insight’s Sye solving sync and delay, the first and second screens can become integrated, enabling second screens to serve as extensions of the viewing experience on the first screen. This further enables new monetisation for STCC as content owner. The STCC enhanced second screen app uses product placement for all driver cams and branded sponsor channels in the STCC app to further monetise its content in addition to normal broadcast revenue. Sye also opens up significant business potential via enhanced viewer engagement and new advertisement models, adding value-added

applications on top: such as real-time social media commentary, interactive gaming, in-game betting, voting and polling – all within a real-time TV viewing experience. As a result of using the Sye technology, the STCC Live app enhanced viewer engagement. It was the first time

51

where the audience was able to follow a race in real-time over OTT. Viewers had access to exclusive, value-added extras which allowed them to follow their favourite driver, join the crew in the pit-stop and listen to exciting guest speakers and influencers. netinsight.net

PAYWIZARD & OSTMODERN VENUE

Paywizard and Ostmodern have come together to create Venue, an end-to-end solution that provides a revolutionary approach to PPV services by treating viewers as long-term customers. Launched at IBC2017, the software and services solution, built on nearly 20 years combined experience of delivering and supporting PPV events, is driven by the relationship between the operator and customer – optimising the individual content journey each viewer takes throughout the PPV customer journey. Venue focuses on building lasting relationships with customers long-term, so that operators don’t just monetise a single event, but create predictable and growing revenue streams.

Traditionally, PPV events have been dealt Ü Ì Ã >Ì Æ Ü iÌ iÀ «iÀ>Ì ÀÃ >Ài w ÀÃÌ venturing into PPV or are well–established in the market, most tend to focus on the delivery of the event and short-term monetisation opportunities. Operators can now offer personalised engagement at each key stage by proactively using customer data insight and predictive analytics to leverage a dynamic content management system that feeds captivating content to consumer devices.

With 80 per cent of PPV registrations happening in the hour before an event, operators must have a scalable solution, but keeping customers engaged before and after an event is the major PPV challenge. Venue helps drive loyalty and growth during all stages; including the ability to create targeted marketing campaigns, offer further premium extras such as VR content and merchandise or even introduce SVoD subscriptions for regular customers. Venue is designed to change the way PPV events are managed today and in the future – the result being a long-standing, loyal customer base. www.paywizard.com www.ostmodern.co.uk

Lift speed has doubled to 15cm per second. An internal magnetic strip encoder replaces the lift wiredraw, eliminating potential for interference between the wiredraw and cables. A rocker switch on the dolly permits the lift to be raised and lowered locally without a control system or joystick panel. The position of the lift can be read off a scale on the second stage. Lift and dolly electronic connections use a sliding blind mate mechanism that allows for fast assembly and protection against cable and connector damage.
