BROADCAST & PRODUCTION: FROM CREATION TO CONSUMPTION
SAM SEES POSITIVE AIMS RESPONSE Snell Advanced Media (SAM) Stand: M16 By Neal Romanek BVE 2016 is the first major broadcast tradeshow held since the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) was formed at the end of last year, and one of its founding members, Snell Advanced Media (SAM), has found that the new trade organisation has ignited customer interest. AIMS was formed by Grass Valley, Imagine Communications, Lawo, Nevion and SAM to promote open standards and
interoperability in the transition to IP. Mark Gardner, SAM sales director for Northern Europe and Africa, said that BVE delegates have been enquiring about the AIMS agenda and expressing appreciation that their concerns about interoperability are finally being addressed. “A lot of the customers are very happy to see the industry is pulling together. With AIMS, there’s now a formal way for manufacturers to talk to each other. If we all disappear in different directions and do our own things around IP, then the customers are going to suffer.” Gardner cautioned that AIMS’ work is just beginning: “But even though customers are

You can move audio around in the same fashion, and see the waveform to help line things up.” The new version of Media Composer also supports HDR workflows and enables

PLAYING TOGETHER IN THE CLOUD Visitors to the Avid stand can see the newly released version 8.5 of Media Composer in action and a demo of the forthcoming Cloud Collaboration feature for audio suite Pro Tools 12.5. Danny Hollingsworth, solutions specialist at Avid, was demonstrating the new release of Avid’s venerable NLE. “Media Composer 8.5 has had its biggest interface change for years,” he said. “The aim was to simplify some of our menus, such as providing an input and output section, so people coming fresh to Media Composer will see right away how to get media in and

editors to work up to 64 audio tracks. Editing is boosted by the ability to group clips and sync them automatically based on the audio waveform, while effects work will be aided by the new ability to cache all played frames, and all effects applied to those clips, in RAM. With Avid Cloud Collaboration for Pro Tools, professionals
can work together on the same project anywhere in the world because revisions and files are synchronised automatically. They can then compose, record, edit, and mix tracks collaboratively with other Pro Tools users. Two Pro Tools systems were sharing and mixing tracks over the internet on the Avid stand, in the first such demo of the collaboration system in Europe. “We’re showing a pre-release version here at BVE,” said Dave Tyler, audio solutions specialist manager for Avid. “People from all areas of the industry have been interested in this at the show. It’s got a very broad appeal, as it enables remote workflows directly from within your Pro Tools session.” Visitors to the Avid stand are also able to get a closer look at PlayMaker, one of the fruits of

the Orad acquisition which Avid completed last year. Ofir Benofici, senior director, Broadcast Products, Avid, said of the sports replay server: “We’re bringing PlayMaker closer to the Avid portfolio, integrating it with Media Composer, ISIS or Interplay. Collectively we are providing a much more elaborate workflow. This is gaining a lot of interest from Avid customers and others.” “It’s an evolution, not a revolution,” continued Benofici. “You’ll see us bring more enhancements to PlayMaker, including 4K, as this is where the market is going.”

NFL: DIGITAL “SUPERIOR” TO TV By Adrian Pennington The NFL is creating a digitally delivered fan experience that will be “superior” to its own TV presentation and soon worth over $1 billion a year to the League, according to the executive in charge. “There are a wealth of opportunities to create a superior product online which will make NFL digital far more potent than TV,” said Shannon Rutherford, director of digital media video operations, NFL. “We have 360-degree immersive video and virtual reality. We can personalise it. We can create our own content and we can distribute through multiple digital channels including social media.” Keynoting BVE 2016 and the Streaming Forum, Rutherford said, “Our product will become a daily habit for our fans.” With broadcast deals locked up with Fox, CBS and NBC until 2022 the NFL has recently dabbled in live streaming. Notably, it sold exclusive rights worth around $20 million to Yahoo! to live stream an in season game from London last year. All bets are off post-2022 with Rutherford hinting that OTT will form a central part of NFL strategy. “Digital rights expansion is crucial to the NFL’s long term success,” he said. Until then the sport has to find other ways to reach fans on digital platforms. This includes NFL mobile; premium subscription product NFL Gamepass, which permits
live streaming of all games internationally; and social media reach. In 2014 the NFL kicked off a series of original programming which was ramped up from four shows to ten shows in 2015. “TV viewing has flatlined in the US since 2010 while digital consumption has gone through the roof,” he said. “The TV audience is also ageing. Younger audiences are more engaged. All of this puts a lot of pressure on ad revenue, and makes digital more attractive to reach key demographics. The question is: what does the NFL do about it?” One solution is NFL Now, a digital-only fan destination which is presented as a TV-like linear lean back experience with on-demand game highlights, studio shows and talent-led analysis. Ironically, to create this with high production values, the NFL is reliant on broadcast kit like video switchers, routers and orchestration hubs. “We are using a traditional broadcast mentality to create a linear experience using the same gear as broadcast itself but delivering it digitally and adding interactivity,” said Rutherford. The digital team takes the same live linear feed as broadcast, and clips into highlights in as near real time as they can get. “NFL is like a news organisation in that our highlights are perishable,” he said. “It’s not going to be evergreen content so the primary use case is for fans who want to see what happened that day. The faster we can get it out the more opportunities we have to maximise

revenue.” There were some essential marks that Rutherford felt the League’s digital operation had to hit when delivering live content. “You have to have 100 per cent uptime while the game is playing. The stream should be smooth with no more than a one per cent buffer and the time to enter the stream should be less than a second.” He added, “Success often means money so for us that means revenue over a billion dollars per year from digital delivery.” Attaining that means ensuring that its digital ad inventory is always (100 per cent) fufilled, he said. However, if the League is banking on taking control of creating and distributing its own content in house it has some way to go to match the staggering current TV deals worth at least $3 billion a year (2013 to 2022) cut with US broadcasters.
By Michael Burns AJA has announced RovoCam, the company’s first compact block camera for industrial, corporate, security, pro AV and broadcast applications. It’s capable of capturing Ultra HD and HD imagery with built-in 12x optical and up to 20x zoom with Sony Super Resolution Zoom. It offers an integrated HDBaseT interface, supporting uncompressed video, power, stereo audio and RS232 control over a single CAT 5e/6 cable running at lengths of up to 100m. Nick Rashby, president of AJA, said BVE 2016 marked the first time RovoCam had been seen in a broadcast environment. “We’ve branched out and come up with something that
we think is fairly unique,” he added. “HDBaseT is super common in the Pro AV market, but you can barely find it in the broadcast world. However, you can get 100m of uncompressed 4K on Cat6 cable. Our sports broadcast customers in particular have been very interested, looking at it for maybe goal-line cameras or arenas.” RovoCam is built around Sony’s 4K FCB-ER8300 Functional Camera Block, featuring back-illuminated CMOS sensor technology and Sony image processing. The small aluminium unit allows for simple mounting in a wide range of scenarios. RovoRx-HDMI, the companion receiver unit, offers simple integration for RovoCam with an HDMI output, and all video/audio signals, power, and control over HDBaseT. Shipping soon through AJA’s resellers, RovoCam is also compatible with some third party receivers.

Managing content from 80km away root6
Stand: J15 By Neal Romanek That single cable dangling down the Excel wall near the S5 entrance isn’t a mistake of the BVE maintenance crew, it’s part of a demo by root6 and Barnfind Technologies. The companies are showing off remote 4K production capabilities which, given the globalisation of the industry, and the rising rents in Soho, are becoming increasingly appealing. “Our monitor is connected with an output from the Barnfind booth by a single strand of fibre from across the hall, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be 80 kilometers away,” said root6 managing director Marcus Hume-Humphreys. The company is also showcasing version 3.5 of its Content Agent software.

By Michael Burns Canon’s bike-shop themed stand was packed out at BVE 2016 as the company showed off its EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera, the Canon XEED 4K500ST UHD multimedia projector and the latest in 4K camera systems, lenses and displays. The company was also celebrating the news that the EOS C300 Mark II had met HD and UHD classification from the EBU. This report recognises image capture of up to 15 stops of dynamic range using Canon Log2 and qualifies the EOS C300 Mark II for R.118 Tier 1 in HD and Tier 2 in UHD. James Burwood, digital video product manager, Canon, said the award was “a very good endorsement for the broadcast industry. It substantiates a lot of the key features of the product,

such as the high dynamic range measurements.” BVE 2016 has also witnessed the UK’s first presentation of the new compact and lightweight handheld video cameras, the XA35 and XA30, both featuring a newly-developed HD CMOS Pro sensor. Also on show is the ME20F-SH, a camera which boasts an extended ISO of four million. “We’ve seen a lot of interest in the ME20, our super low light camera, and our new broadcast lens, the HD DIGISUPER 90. This is the first in the series of a 4K lenses for broadcast use.”
While 3D Storm is better known as a reseller, principally of NewTek equipment, it is here at BVE 2016 to promote its own brand of live production equipment. “Our focus is to select cost effective and very easy to use tools for production of news and sports,” explains Bruno Lesté, LiveXpert product manager. “We want products with a very short learning curve so that people can use them immediately in the field.” Its LiveXpert solutions fall into three categories: turnkey solutions for sports broadcasters and stadiums, graphics tools, and automation In the latter camp falls Audio Mixer, a new product for automated radio programme production. “It is a combination of our software tools and a NewTek TriCaster mini which can automate a radio show just by monitoring microphone activity,” explains Lesté. FIRMWARE STEP UP FOR SLO MO JVC Kenwood Stand: M40 By Michael Burns The GY-LS300 4KCAM handheld Super 35 camcorder is to receive a boost in the form of a new slow motion recording feature. Available via a free firmware upgrade in April, it brings the ability to record HD footage at up to 120fps. The technology also drives the Prime Zoom feature, which enables fixed-focal (prime) lenses to zoom in and out without losing resolution or depth of field. Other features include a J-Log gamma
setting, which expands dynamic range by 800 per cent with film-like latitude. There’s also a built-in HD streaming engine with Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity for live transmission to hardware decoders or content delivery networks (CDNs). The camera records 4K, HD and SD footage in a variety of formats to dual SDHC/SDXC card slots. John Kelly, general manager, Professional Division at JVC, said, “The new upgrade is ideal for really creative slow motion type of effects. The camera has a very wide range of interest. It encompasses everything from corporates to guys doing shortform film work, music videos

and concerts − anywhere that you need that creative shallow depth of field cine-style look.” “It’s been a good show, with really strong days,” added Kelly. “What’s interesting is that
we’re having a lot of people specifically saying they have money to spend, which is not something I was expecting to hear this year to be honest. So it’s been really positive.”

VENDORS CELEBRATE HHB’S 40TH BIRTHDAY HHB
Stand: L45 By Neal Romanek Audio tech supplier HHB Technologies celebrated its 40th year in the business with a champagne press event at BVE 2016. While happy attendees
had their flutes refilled, HHB’s partner vendors presented their highlights of the show. Genelec introduced its new 8430 monitor, which had its world premiere only weeks ago at Amsterdam’s ISE show. The 8430 claims to be the world’s first commerciallyready AoIP studio monitor. A new addition to Genelec’s Smart Active Monitor (SAM) range of
products, the 8430 features several connectivity options, including an AES67 signal via the XLR-housed RJ45 connector, as well as a standard analogue signal via a balanced XLR connector. Other companies showing off at the HHB stand were Avid, Nugen, DAD, Source Distribution, NTP Technology, and String and Tins.
Visitor’s to HHB’s press event were welcomed with champagne
GOING INTERNATIONAL WITH LOCAL aQ Broadcast Stand: Q12 By Neal Romanek aQ Broadcast is yet another company using BVE 2016 to make its UK trade show debut. Despite its new footprint at BVE, the company has been
doing a thriving domestic and international business since its split from Autocue in 2013. “We’ve continued to develop our hardware and software ranges over the past two years. We’ve done IBC and NAB, but this is our first proper UK show,” said CEO Neil Hutchins. The company is showing off its latest Video Server product
at BVE. Hutchins notes the product’s capabilities have ballooned. “When it was first developed, it was a video server, but now we’re describing it as a broadcast engine, because it has such a wide range of functions. It can literally be a one-stop-shop.” aQ Broadcast has a presence in North America, particularly in Canada,
and has been a favourite of local and regional broadcasters. In the UK, the company has been heavily involved in the local TV rollout, supplying ten of the new local TV stations. “Our involvement with local broadcasters has ranged from just providing a simple newsroom system for one of the sites to providing a complete
technical solution, where we provide all their transmission playout and other functions, including uploading their content to YouTube or transcoding to different formats.” Hutchins says that aQ’s appeal to local broadcasters is that it is the only company that can offer the entire range of services in one package.

FBI INVESTIGATES INDUSTRY ASSUMPTIONS By Neal Romanek On Tuesday evening, Females in the Broadcast Industry (FBI) used BVE 2016 as the platform for its official launch. The trade organisation, which was formed to support and facilitate the networking of women in noncraft roles in the broadcast industry, is free to join and open to both men and women. The launch featured a panel discussion among six women working in diverse sectors of the media industry: Molly Connolly, WW strategist for media and entertainment at Dell; Natascha Cadle, facility director and founder of Envy Post; Rowan Bray, general manager of operations at Molinare; Pam Smith, sound engineer, NEP Visions; and Ilona Valent, EMEA systems engineer at Ross Video. Moderated by Bubble and Squeak managing director and FBI founder, Sadie Groom, the panel offered advice on battling the workplace’s proverbial “glass ceiling”, which was reframed in a more positive light as the “glass ladder”.
Dell’s Molly Connolly takes part in a panel discussion at the FBI launch event “In fact, it’s not a glass ladder, its more like a tree,” said Rowan Bray, general manager of operations at Molinaire. “You can climb it in all kinds of different ways. There are more opportunities for women now than ever before.” Molly Connolly offered a David
Letterman-style ‘Top 10 List’ of steps to take, to make the best of your career. Her running theme was enthusiasm and service, a motif picked up by other panel members. “Trust your gut instinct,” added Envy’s Natascha Cadle. “No one in the world knows you like you
know yourself. And don’t give up. It’s easy to get knocked down. Opportunities will happen for you.” NEP Visions’ Pam Smith said that enthusiasm and following her passion paid off, “All I ever wanted to do was sound. If you’re passionate about what you do and you enjoy it, it’s fun.
And you can put up with quite a lot.” Smith also believes that encouraging women to enter male-dominated industries shouldn’t be left until the time when women are embarking on a career. “I think you have to go back to school level.”
CAN YOU FIND THE EIFFEL TOWER? Ncam Stand: H10 By Adrian Pennington There’s only one place you can find the Eiffel Tower on the BVE showfloor, and it’s on the stand of a good old British company, too. Exhibiting with Vitec Videocom, camera tracking specialist Ncam is demonstrating the power of augmented reality (AR) technology by overlaying the iconic building onto a neighbouring stand. This all sounds like good fun, but broadcasters are increasingly turning to AR to jazz up their live news and sports coverage.
“A lot of broadcasters like the idea of not fixing AR in one room but having the freedom to move between different studios and even outdoors,” says Richard Hingley, Ncam account manager. “This also enables them to use AR in a more innovative fashion. There are more than 50 Ncam systems installed worldwide, among them new sales to Major League Baseball (MLB) and CNN, which is using the system on its US election coverage. “The versatility to move the system between cameras is also very attractive to broadcasters,” adds Hingley. Among users is BT Sport, which is utilising the tech to augment its UEFA Champions
League coverage. The broadcaster is using three cameras – variously on a rolling jib, a Steadicam, and a robotic dolly – to deliver informative, entertaining and immersive graphics. While the kit at BVE is the latest 2016 model, with refinements to the graphic interface among enhancements, the company is reserving major developments for later in the year. It will, for example, have another graphics partner on board and has something else up its sleeve too. “Because of Ncam’s stereoscopic approach we know the distance of points and therefore depth,” was all Hingley would be drawn on. The tease.
