T

he curtain has now officially lifted on what is certainly the most expansive conference programme to date, and arguably the most impressive roster of keynotes and expert speakers ever to be assembled at a BVE event. The BVE conference programme is renowned for its engaging ‘audience with…’ keynote sessions and insightful producer workshops, and this year’s agenda signals another step up in gravitas. Tuesday’s keynote sessions in The Screen @ BVE sees film critic and presenter Mark Kermode putting the questions to Bafta awardwinning writer/director Amma Asante (13:15pm) before turning the microphone on the actor and director Jason Flemyng (15:50). Asante’s directorial debut, A Way of Life, won her a host of awards, including the coveted

BAFTA Carl Foreman Award for the ‘Most Promising Newcomer’. Her other credits include, Belle and A United Kingdom. As an actor, Flemyng has appeared in numerous films including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and is making his directorial debut with Eat Local, which is due for release this year. Day two of the Screen @ BVE, chaired by TVTech Global editor Neal Romanek, brings keynote appearances from the LAD Bible’s content director Ian Moore (12:50), The Night Manager executive producer Simon Cornwell (12:00), and the DPP’s MD, Mark Harrison (11:10). The final day sees the much anticipated appearance of Louis Theroux who for once will be on the receiving end of journalistic probing in his keynote session with

Louis Theroux

broadcaster and film critic, Anna Smith. The session (11.20) sees Theroux share his experimental filmmaking highs and lows throughout a career that has spanned over two decades and specialises in getting under the skin of those at the heart of some of the world’s most controversial lifestyles and associations. Daniel Sacchelli, event manager, BVE, said, “We are truly excited to have Louis join us at this year’s event. He has created an incredibly successful career through bringing his own unique brand to his documentaries, all the while battling controversial and sometimes dangerous topics.” Other luminaries gracing this year’s packed agenda include Daniel Battsek, director, Film4; DoP Tristan Oliver; Rebecca O’Brien, producer, Sixteen Films; and producer Mark Herbert.

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS BVE 2017 is set to be the most engaging and on-trend show to date, acting as a platform for leaders in the broadcast, AV and live entertainment, connected media and the creative industries to come together to share their wisdom, and explore the ramifications of industry convergence. The show has partnered with key industry players to highlight this convergence and acknowledge how broadcast is fast expanding in to other sectors such as the creative and advertising industries and the AV market. One of the highlights of this year’s conference programme comes through BVE’s strategic partnership with the Branded Content Marketing Association (BCMA), which will see the BCMA hold an exclusive event on Thursday 2 March with top executives and content creators in the branded content industry. The impressive speaker list includes Sir Peter Bazalgette, chairman, ITV; Sir John Hegarty, creative founder BBH and chairman of Electric Glue; Karen Stacey, CEO, Digital Cinema Media; and BCMA’s global CEO, Andrew Canter. Also new for 2017 is Connected Media Europe’s dedicated theatre which will tackle the topic on everybody’s lips: IP focused technology, including IPTV, OTT, mobile, social and cloud. BVE 2017 will see the return of The Streaming Forum and the AV User Group AGM. The Streaming Forum, which last

Shannon Rutherford, NFL, who keynoted the 2016 Streaming Forum

year included a keynote from Shannon Rutherford, director of digital media video operations, NFL (pictured), will go in to detail and discuss with delegates how the OTT revolution is blurring the lines between streaming and broadcast. Confirmed keynote speakers at the forum will be Mike Rizzo, head of IPTV Solutions, BT TV and BT Sport UK, and Dan Finch, commercial

director, TV Player and Simplestream UK. Following on from last year’s success, the AV User Group is yet again using BVE as the location for its annual general meeting (AGM). Attracting over 300 AV executives, the attendees of the meeting will benefit from the ever-growing AV and live entertainment sector being represented on the show floor.

A CHANGE FROM THE NORM OPINION: Ross Video Stand: M14 By Oscar Juste, director of sales EMEA, Ross Video The first quarter of the new calendar year is always very busy for the broadcast community; the turkey and Christmas pudding are now far distant memories as most of us are now knee-deep in trade shows, exhibitions and awards ceremonies. BVE continues to be an enjoyable and important event for Ross Video, and we’ve steadily enhanced our presence at the exhibition in line with our success in the UK and wider European markets. This year, we’ll be participating in panel discussions about virtual reality, Esports and the future of content delivery so I’m sure the conference side of the event will be as informative and engaging as ever. Predictably, much of the hype around IP has now calmed as customers have realised that the technology is still developing and not yet mature. Customers can spend a great deal of money on an IP-based solution and the terrain remains littered with landmines but it’s good to see that standards committees and manufacturers are focusing on interoperability and the need to put customers first. Last year, Ross Video acquired an IP technology company called Coveloz and

the fruits of that acquisition will appear later this year, making our position on IP extremely compelling. Most manufacturers in this industry claim to be customercentric and suggest that their technologies help customers produce better television. Ironically, when customers visit trade shows and exhibitions there is rarely any live TV content to be seen; plenty of product-centric information and lots of promotional showreel, but very little actual live TV. At this year’s BVE Ross Video will be demonstrating a live news production workflow and we will be creating and broadcasting

live content from a small physical news set on our booth. It’s an interesting approach and a change from the norm, but we believe this is more in line with what customers want to see from a creative, business and technology perspective. We often talk about the importance of the Ross ecosystem and how our products knit together to form a powerful toolset for content creators. BVE will give visitors a great opportunity to see this toolset in action, demonstrating how professionals in live production can work more quickly, efficiently and cost effectively.

BVE PROVIDES 4K FOCUS FOR IKEGAMI Ikegami Stand: J26 Ikegami is here this week to give a UK debut to its 4K-native UHK430 portable broadcast camera. The newest addition to Ikegami’s range incorporates three 4K-native, 2/3-inch, eight

megapixel CMOS sensors, delivering four times more image detail than high definition, boasting a colour depth of ten bits per pixel. The UHK-430 also includes a B4 bayonet mount compatible with 2/3 inch HD and 4K lenses. Also making its UK debut is the UHK-430’s unique twopiece construction.

The UHK-430 has an optical block supporting options such as 35mm 4K sensors or high frame rate sensors. The head can be detached and operated up to 50 metres from the camera body, designed for easy deployment on support devices such as longreach camera poles. At the heart of the UHK-430 is Ikegami’s fifth generation high-speed video processing engine, the AXII, reducing power consumption and delivering a wide range of features. The AXII also provides the processing for Ikegami’s newly developed transfer characteristic, which delivers high contrast for a wider dynamic range.

GROUP LAUNCHES ONLINE SUBTITLE CREATION TOOL Screen Systems/ Cavena Image Products Stand: N25/J14

BVE Show News understands that the online subtitling tool resulting from the tri-party partnership revealed at NAB 2016 between OOONA, Screen and Cavena has formally been launched at BVE. The three stakeholders, who have already contributed to the broader OOONA online toolkit, agreed to collaborate in April of last year to develop a browser-based, advanced

subtitle creation and preparation tool. Online Toolkit’s concept was the brainchild of Wayne Garb, Managing Director of OOONA whose vision was to create an online portal where subtitlers and translators have easy access to a suite of tools with a suitably high level of functionality. The core objective was to create a toolkit to enable professionals to quickly create and prepare subtitle files via internet access and without the need to

download software. The new online subtitling tool along with the entire subtitling toolkit is being demonstrated this week on the stands of Screen and Cavena, which can be located at N25 and J14 respectively, where interested attendees can experience the new tool in its entirety.

ROSS GIVES LIVE NEWS THE ACID TEST Ross Video Stand: M14 Ross Video is giving its live news production workflow the ‘ACID test’ at BVE 2017 this week. The company is demonstrating key products required to run a live production: Ross ACID cameras and robotics, along with the XPression graphics platform, the Carbonite Black video switcher, its OverDrive Automated Production Control system, and Inception social media management software. Visitors will be able to see a resident journalist on the Ross stand creating news content throughout the week which

is being broadcast live from a small physical set on the other side of the stand. EMEA director of sales Oscar Juste said: “Manufacturers in this industry claim their mission is to help customers produce more creative and compelling content, more efficiently and more cost effectively. “The irony is that when customers walk around the

various tradeshow booths, nobody is actually making television content and hence offering up practical examples of how this can be done. We think this is a notable oversight and so we are going to use BVE 2017 to demonstrate how the various different elements of the Ross product range can be combined to create a simple and powerful workflow.”

IMAGEN 5 LAUNCHES AT BVE Imagen Stand: G18 Imagen has launched the latest version of its Enterprise Video Platform at the ExCeL. Imagen 5, according to the company, has been built with both content owners and their customers in mind, providing the most efficient platform for managing and monetising video content. Used by a number of key customers such as Premier League, Channel 4, Endemol

and IMG to manage, distribute and commercialise legacy and near live content, Imagen’s latest version of its Enterprise Video Platform creates “even more opportunities to generate revenue for content owners as well as preserving large libraries of media with best in class workflow and archiving tools.” Tom Blake, CEO, Imagen, said,

“It has always been our mission at Imagen to help content owners efficiently manage the vast amount of media they need to handle on a daily basis, and extract the maximum value from that content.”

satellite-based backhaul, transport and distribution.

Stand: K30 Francois Quereuil, senior director of worldwide marketing Has BVE come at a good time for the electronic media industry? If so, why? BVE has come at a great time for companies that are looking to exploit the increasing availability of internet broadband at production venues. They’re looking for open video transport solutions that enable live streaming of broadcast-quality video globally over commodity internet with glitch-free playout and negligible start-up time, reducing the need for expensive and limited

What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? With the arrival of 4K, 8K and VR, and the need to deliver content in numerous formats for multiplatform distribution, file sizes and the volume of content that media companies need to exchange are soaring. They also face shorter turnaround times and must collaborate both internally and externally to survive in this highly competitive market. Why should delegates visit your stand at BVE? Aspera is showcasing new technology solutions: our new Aspera Transfer Service,

Files Express and updates for Aspera FASPStream, a transport technology for live and near-live streaming. Aspera co-founder and CEO, Michelle Munson, will present two exciting customer use cases with Sky and TVT at the Post & Workflow Theatre. Munson will also present Solutions for Live Streaming at the Streaming Forum on Wednesday 1st March.

ARGOSY UNVEILS ‘INDUSTRY FIRSTS’ Argosy Stand: G43

BVE Show News has learned that Argosy has become the broadcast industry’s exclusive distributor for two new ATEN products, both making their debut here at BVE 2017. The ATEN DVI KVM-over-IP KE Extender Slim, a more compact, entry-level price-point version of the original KE KVM-over-IP Extender that was unveiled at IBC, is aimed at broadcasters who require multiple points of access to its programmes and systems from remote USB consoles (USB keyboard, USB mouse, DVI monitor) from anywhere over a network; from master control

rooms to rackrooms and editing suites. As an IP-based matrix Extender, it has various connection options to fulfil different working environments, such as oneto-one (extender mode), one-to-many (splitter mode), many-to-one (switch mode), or many-to-many (matrix mode). Also making its broadcast debut is the ATEN CE624 USB DVI Dual View HDBaseT 2.0 KVM Extender, capable of sending two signals over a single CAT6 cable. The Extender integrates the latest HDBaseT 2.0 technologies to provide “the most reliable transmission” of video, audio, USB and RS-232 signals available on the market. “We are delighted to be back at BVE to support broadcasters, not only

presenting our traditional portfolio of infrastructure products, but with a broader offering that provides smarter technologies and cost savings for the wider production environment,” said Daniel Hinton, B&C regional manager, Argosy. Argosy is also unveiling its new UHD/4K cable solution at the show. The Mudigsa connectors and Mudigsa video patch solution are designed to help users take advantage of 4K technology and future-proof their fixed or outside broadcast facilities.

EXPANDING AUDIO OVER IP OPINION: Clear-Com Stand: Q16 By Simon Browne director of product management The broadcast industry’s move to IP-based workflows marches on, with some early adopters embracing the technology wholesale while others take a more cautious approach. There is much to consider, with every piece of the workflow puzzle needing a specific solution that will create a cohesive whole. Interoperability is key to ensuring all elements can talk to each other. At Clear-Com we have been working hard on expanding our existing audio over IP-based intercom and connectivity solutions, listening carefully to our customers’ needs and the direction of the market, and ensuring our products are compatible with other popular tools. In all cases we have been careful to allow connectivity over a wide variety of networks where intercom may be needed. These include Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks connecting two or more LANs together (WAN), and of course over the public internet. There is no off-the-shelf audio over IP standard that provides for all this as a global intercom requirement. As a confirmation of Clear-Com’s technical leadership within the industry, we have

designed a layer 3 IP technology – Instant Voice Core or I.V.Core® – that gives us the global and local flexibility optimised for intercom, and designed to operate alongside established networked audio standards such as AVB, Dante, AES67 and Ravenna. For instance, we recently launched the E-Dante64-HX Interface Card for Eclipse HXOmega, Median, and Delta matrix systems. It is enabled to work with Dante network protocols and software, allowing users to transport up to 64 channels of high quality audio via a ClearCom matrix to multiple Danteenabled devices using standard Ethernet network structure. The card offers high audio quality interfacing for Eclipse-HX, and may be used in the broadcast chain; for example, when IFB feeds are transported to/from a mixing console via the Eclipse Matrix System over Dante channels, allowing the talent to hear instructions via an ear monitor. It also brings clear benefits to live performances and Houses of Worship where Dante devices are widely used in equipment including mixing consoles, microphones, audio players, intercoms and speakers. In addition, our Agent-IC mobile app for Android and Apple platforms enables remote users of Eclipse-HX (EHX) Matrix intercom systems to connect into their systems over webconnected smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Effectively it is a virtual intercom panel that fits in

the pocket and connects users from virtually anywhere in the world, using popular consumer technology that is already widely available and globally connected. The Agent-IC app provides pointto-point calling, point-to-multipoint group calling, partyline, PTT, local cross-point audio level control, and notification functions. It is accessible via multiple IP networks, and is enhanced by user-selectable optimisation to compensate for varying network conditions. Since their initial launch in early 2015, our LQ Series IP interface devices have also been well received by professional audio experts. The LQ Series cost-effectively extends an existing intercom system, and/ or connects with third-party intercom and 4-wire audio devices at a single location or multiple remote locations over an IT infrastructure, eliminating lengthy audio cable runs. As broadcasters make the complex transition to IP, we are committed to making the audio communications leg of the journey as easy and as smooth as possible.

CLOUD-BASED BROADCAST PLAYOUT OPINION: PlayBox Stand: L14 By Don Ash, president, PlayBox Technology Limited The introduction of analogue cable and satellite distribution services, followed later by digital terrestrial and digital satellite, increased customer choice from low single figures to literally thousands of channels. A further phase of transformation is now in progress: so-called ‘cloud playout’. This frees broadcasters from the need to operate and maintain their own hardware. The savings in space and staff overheads can be substantial. Virtual playout is technically very elegant. It follows a model we established many years ago, which allowed remote management of programme schedules, ad sales, media management and monitoring. With the almost global rollout of optical-fibre networking, an increasing amount of content now travels as data files via an IP link from producer to broadcaster. Virtual delivery has thus become a core element of the cloud playout model. A key advantage of virtual playout is setup speed, allowing a 24/7 channel live in far less time than is needed for traditional server-plus-software or dedicated hardware systems. The actual time to put a new channel on air is potentially

reduced from months or weeks to a matter of hours. Once a broadcaster is settled into this mode of operation, a new channel can be activated within minutes. This level of flexibility also makes virtual playout an ideal basis for transient content streams such as ‘red button’ channels created to provide supplementary information during a specific programme series or outside broadcast event.

When funded by the client as an operational-expense service, virtual playout frees a channel owner’s investment capital to meet the overheads of originating, acquiring or refining content. It additionally offers broadcasters a basis for very cost-effective, space-efficient and reliable disaster-recovery. When specified correctly, this approach allows cloud-based playout, backup and disaster recovery to be achieved all-inone via the cloud.

AXON BRINGS STUDIO.ONE TO BVE Axon Digital Design Stand: G44 Axon Digital Design has arrived at BVE 2017 with the AZilPix Studio. One; a new virtual camera system for live video capture and streaming. Employing cost-effective, ultra-high resolution cameras with wide angle and/or fish eye lenses to capture every aspect of a live event from multiple angles, the Studio. One system is designed to integrate into a traditional or IP broadcast environment and blend with VR video production, to be used at remote internet or broadcast live productions such as music concerts, sports events,

church services and conferences. Studio. One consists of three integrated components: camera, capture server, and processing software. The server ingests the raw, wide-angle video data from the cameras and allows recording and live processing of this data into one or more rectilinear views and a view mosaic. According to the company, a key advantage of this system is that framing can be carried out offline at the viewing or post production stage. “Studio. One gives programme makers endless creative possibilities when it comes to deciding how they want their programme to look,” said Dr

Philippe Bekaert, a founder and CTO for AZilPix. “The cameras are very small and unobtrusive, which means they can be used in places where you wouldn’t normally put a camera. It’s also possible to automate the system using pre-programmed camera motions or motion tracking, while our server allows cameras to be shuttered precisely and simultaneously and frames to be time stamped with an SMPTE LTC or other timecode.”

SMART AUDIO, SMART ETHERNET Aspen Media Stand: F30 There’s plenty to investigate over at stand F30 this week, as BVE regular Aspen Media showcases products from its international suppliers, including Smart Audio from Junger Audio. Smart Audio, according to Aspen, offers “adaptive guarantee audio processing for the control and management of the audio in live, fast-moving news, sport and magazine

television and radio production while assuring consistent volume, intelligibility and overall quality of content before it goes to air”. DirectOut Technologies is demonstrating its new routing control for the M.1k2 MADI router, while also on display is the ARG Quarra 10100 PTP Smart Ethernet switch (pictured), designed for use in audio-over-IP and video-over-IP networks. JLCooper is showing Proton for the first time in the UK – a low-cost video switcher control

surface for Blackmagic ATEM. Finally, and also making its UK debut will be the Stage Tec Crescendo Platinum, a mixing desk offering a minimum of eight to a maximum of 56 channel strips. It utilises the Stage Tec NEXUS control system and delivers extended Mosart control with support for different cross-fade times.

IMAGEN INTRODUCES CONTENT ON-BOARDING SERVICES PRODUCT FOCUS: Imagen Stand: G18 Imagen Ltd (developer of awardwinning Imagen Enterprise Video Platform) now offers a suite of professional tape digitisation and content on-boarding services designed to reduce the complexity of digitisation projects. Imagen’s content onboarding programme includes tape encoding, bulk file ingest and cataloguing of small and large collections of media. The new initiative will ensure that valuable media libraries are organised, easily accessible and ready for a digital future with a long-term preservation strategy in place.

While so many companies would like to exploit the commercial potential of their content, improve operational efficiency and offer online high resolution delivery through cloud services – the barriers to adopting new SaaS technologies like Imagen’s Enterprise Video Platform often lie in time and costs associated with digitising tapes and cataloguing unstructured media data. Recognising this problem, Imagen are offering new Imagen customers a subsidised rate to offset content on-boarding costs – plus fully funded digitisation programmes for smaller collections. The new service focuses on the

precarious state of content stored on tape. As all video tapes continue to degrade, and with players and tape heads in shorter supply, Imagen has been campaigning to ensure valuable content is digitised and given a digital future. Once on board, Imagen’s Enterprise Video Platform enables content owners to exercise full control over how staff and customers access media through a secure, highly customisable website. It also features powerful media management tools to help organise and maintain the digital library. Content can also be monetised through B2B and B2C packages – via subscription VoD or broadcast licensing platforms.

SUITCASE TV JETS INTO BVE WITH FLYAWAY Suitcase TV Stand: E34 Suitcase TV is showcasing its Iphrame Flyaway at the ExCeL this week. The production system, which Suitcase is calling “a major advance in the capabilities of compact, powerful IP-based systems”, combines IP, ASI, and SDI signals in a portable system to provide real-time, ultra-low latency production on the run. Iphrame handles video, audio, and graphics on standard IT hardware or VMs, which

eliminates the need to acquire and transport the majority of traditional hardware. Vice president of products Ed Calverley said, “Operators can set up Iphrame very quickly and switch proxy versions of sources via the cloud in real time. This means that on-site staff numbers and associated costs are substantially reduced for each event.” The Iphrame Flyaway system incorporates Suitcase’s TimeLock functionality, which uses PTP

reference clocks to ensure that all sources and processes are accurately time-stamped on site. According to the company, it can be transported and online in minutes due to set up requiring nothing more than connecting Iphrame Flyaway to a broadcast centre over any standard IP link and plugging in SDI cameras/ feeds and audio sources.

THE SOCIAL DILEMMA FOR BROADCASTERS OPINION: Snell Advanced Media

Stand: L16 By Neil Maycock, EVP and general manager, media software solutions News broadcasters are struggling to meet the quick production demands social media requires that also provide the ability to access and edit content from anywhere. Newsrooms that have been creating content for television for the last 50 years and for a website for the last 15 years, now, much more quickly than before, need to create content for social media. Right now, broadcasters are struggling to try and combine all these operations and avoid the almost inevitable creation of separate silos of process, creating inefficiency. And in today’s fast paced world, there’s no time for inefficiency. Especially as traditional newsrooms are competing for viewership with social companies like Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter where news can be crowdsourced quickly and in real time. It’s not just the broadcasters either; the even longerestablished newspaper industry is re-inventing itself on the 21st century social platforms. They too are competing hard to regain their readers who have left the printed paper behind. To remain competitive, nimble broadcasters need to bring all

operations together. They need to have the ability to create high-quality content, imbued with their depth and credibility, from wherever the latest stories emerge and publish to all audiences, instantly. Accordingly, newsrooms have to release the stronghold television has over their technical specs, like picture shape, in order to compete on social-sized screens. Traditional news broadcasts are currently designed to fit a television, but

with mobile phones that can be held horizontally or vertically, it is necessary to have more flexible formatting. Many current production systems insist video be squeezed into the television picture frame, even when viewers are watching on alternate formats. While it can still be a challenge to maintain high picture quality across viewing platforms, newsrooms that adapt will find greater success on both traditional and social screens.

LIVE PRODUCTION FROM THE GARAGE Digital Garage Stand: K52 Broadcast Pix is demonstrating its live production systems with Digital Garage here at Excel London. In addition to its integrated production switchers, Broadcast Pix is also demonstrating the new Broadcast Pix Commander series of live production systems with a streamlined touchscreen interface and BPNet cloud-based video workflow service. Digital Garage recently installed Broadcast Pix integrated production switchers in four universities. “We love the versatility that Broadcast Pix brings to live production, whether

for traditional baseband video or live streaming,” said Michael Whelan, managing director, Digital Garage. “Many of our customers’ studios are fed media from post production. Broadcast Pix’s ability to support DNx and ProRes codecs means we deliver media natively to the switcher directly from our Avid, Adobe, or Final Cut environments whilst we are live on the air. Plus, BPNet provides the ability to contribute to the live production from anywhere on the web, which takes away that whole feeling of remote broadcast.” The BPNet production ecosystem works as an independent system or with Broadcast Pix integrated production switchers. It is designed to enable users to

securely share and collaborate from anywhere – using any browser – convert video files without any technical knowledge, and distribute content to any social media or broadcast platform with a single click. BPNet Upload, a free app for iOS and Android mobile devices, works in conjunction with BPNet to allow reporters to transfer media files from the field directly to a Broadcast Pix system. “We’re proud to be part of BVE with our partner, Digital Garage,” added Lee Griffin, EMEA sales manager, Broadcast Pix.

CONNECT2 YOUR STATS Lorensbergs Stand: Q15 Booking and scheduling software specialist Lorensbergs is revealing new developments in connect2, its online inventory management system that will reportedly make understanding resource usage patterns and demand seem like “child’s play”. The system, used by academic institutions to loan and track valuable collections of media equipment to

students and staff, is launching a suite of ‘quick stats’. The data displays provide instant insight into years of usage for each item or collection of equipment. Users are being shown how often items are being used at full capacity, designed to lend confidence to decisionmaking and funding requests for increasing stock. Similarly, the software displays future booking data, highlighting if demand for resources is likely to outstrip supply, and whether there’s a need to purchase

additional resources. Lorensbergs managing director Anna Crilly said, “Each year our academic customers make tough decisions on where to spend their equipment funds to get best value for their departments. “These new quick stat displays provide deep understanding on what’s needed most without the need for lengthy data crunching. Now purchases of the latest kit can be made with sharpened deliberation and greater confidence.”
