INTRODUCTION
CRESTRON 2016 INTEGRATION AWARDS WINNERS I’m continually impressed by the high level of service, innovation and dedication from integrators within this industry, so it’s always a pleasure to be invited to judge the Crestron Integration Awards. This was my third stint on the judging panel and probably the toughest so far. Since their launch in 2012, the awards have persistently gained momentum to be widely regarded as one of the most credible manufacturer-led installation schemes, recognising industry excellence and showcasing the finest projects. The high standard and increasing number of entries that flock in continues to impress me, and this was
another record-breaking year, with 112 entries submitted. The calibre was astounding, and seeing the work and dedication that goes into each one only makes my job, and that of my fellow judges (pictured below), even harder. With competition this tough, it speaks volumes for the exceptional quality of integrators in this industry. So, congratulations to all of the Crestron Integration Award Winners 2016 – which this year also includes a double winner! Please read on for full details in this special Installation supplement. ELYTRONIC – MONSTER
CYPRUS In 2011 Elytronic were commissioned to deliver an elaborate automation project for a family home in Cyprus. The planning stage alone took almost two years, with multiple revisions until the end of 2013; such was the scope of the project. The size of the house is generous, over 2,000sqm, and was to include over 25 unconnected systems, that needed integrating to make this family home work seamlessly. With the design finalised, the project was delivered in 2015. The brief was simple: to make the systems easier for the family to control without compromising the beauty of the house. Elytronic worked with Crestron to specify an automation system that would give the family total control of their AV, security and building control system using discreet
fittings and devices. The lighting part of the project alone required the control of over 300 circuits plus 80 blinds and curtains, which would otherwise require 400 switches. Using the Crestron lighting system, Elytronic created a fully integrated lighting control system with just 60 keypads and 20 touchscreens. This project also included: distributed audio, distributed video with 4K support, landscape audio system with subwoofer, home cinema room, media room, security alarm system, CCTV system, fire alarm system, SIP intercom system, air conditioning, central heating, generator control and feedback, petrol and water tanks accurate (ultrasonic) readings, multiple door and gate control, hot water boiler control and scheduling, mechanical water systems integration, irrigation system integration, indoor and outdoor
pool integration. An impressive aspect is that Elytronic created a control system using just 12km of cabling, 20 touchscreens and 16 remote controls, which for a project on this scale is remarkable! With the original brief in mind, Elytronic created a user-friendly system with minimal disruption to the aesthetic of the home. Two kinds of devices control the home – touchscreen and keypads – both by Crestron, meaning the homeowner only needs to interact with one interface for all systems. The walls in the residence only have two controls in each room, the touchscreen and keypad, with no visible thermostats, switches, intercoms and so on, leaving them untainted. This winning project ticked all the home owners’ objectives, who commented: “I did not know this required so much work and so much labour. I am impressed.”

WINNER HARRIS GRANT MARINE – M.Y. MADAME KATE
NETHERLANDS Power, flexibility and elegance are just three of the words that Harris Grant were given in the integration brief for the magnificent 60m super yacht MY Madame Kate. To minimise visual impact of the installation on board, the system was discreetly fitted across the vessel’s three levels during the build, with the full project delivered in April 2015 just ahead of its first season at sea. This ambitious installation is a fine example of how a Crestron integration system can both elevate and enhance interior luxury. Built in the Netherlands for a South American client, Madame Kate boasts all the high-end aesthetics that you’d expect from a super yacht – superb interior design, uncompromised style and flawless attention to detail. To make this integration work, Harris Grant needed to consider
every element of the project, including lack of space and access during the build, to ensure interior features wouldn’t be compromised. At the heart of the vessel’s sophisticated AV, communication and environmental systems is a significant and complex Crestron-controlled DM/AV installation which stretches from bow to stern. In addition, there is a vertical vessel-wide KNX installation, as well as Crestron integration with Bridge, VSAT and TVRO systems. Harris Grant worked with awardwinning graphic designer Crab to deliver a bespoke interface to further enhance the user experience. This custom interface gives the owner, guests and crew fingertip control over audio-visual entertainment and environmental systems from their personal iPad minis – an innovative use of a ‘flat’ interface which minimises visual impact to the interior design. Another intuitive touch interface controls the TV,
audio and video servers, lighting dimmers and scenes, blinds/drapes, aircon and fan speed. Harris Grant also designed all IT systems on board, including servers, networking and wired and wireless LAN access. For flexibility, the Crestronbased system is highly configurable, and can be instantly re-written to suit the clients’ requirements. Overall, this outstanding project not only delivered on the brief, but also demonstrated quality workmanship from Harris Grant to deliver a bespoke and considered solution making it a clear winner. Second Engineer Sébastien Filippi, one of the system’s key users, says of the finished install: “It’s incredible – AV, IT and control systems have all been in use 24/7, ever since the owner and his family boarded the vessel on the day of delivery. We’ve just completed our first season at sea with no issues or interruptions. It’s been a total success.”

ULTAMATION & INTUITIVE HOMES THE ULTIMATE MAN-CAVE
UNITED KINGDOM It’s not often that an installation project really captures the imagination, but this chest-beating, exciting project did, both for having the wow factor but also for its technical prowess. In a complex feat of innovative installation, Ultamation & Intuitive Homes successfully married the clean design of Crestron’s touch panels with industrial motor controls to create the Ultimate Man-Cave. The client wanted a unique retreat within his existing basement car park to entertain friends and display one of his supercars. Ultamation & Intuitive Homes worked with an industrial controls company to create an automated rotating turntable as a centrepiece, encasing the car within curved glass and leather, while ensuring it had all the health and safety features required. The turntable is controlled by a Crestron 3-series processor, which can rotate the car to pre-set positions or simply spin 360° for “look at me” appeal.
The client wanted this to be the ultimate man-cave, so aside from the interior grandeur, the tech needed to roar with power too. Turning up the entertainment factor to the max, a unified entertainment system provides instant access to TV, movies, music or automation of the car turntable. An HD distribution system was installed in the games room, with HiFi audio distribution throughout the space and over 15 sensors to allow some very clever features – including gate and garage door automation, so when the homeowner drives into the driveway, the home’s lighting, heating and AV systems kicks in. Magnetic flux vehicle detection sensors are fitted into the driveway and underneath the cars which detect when a vehicle has entered the garage and when it is parked. This in turn starts up a pre-defined playlist of background music, depending on which car has arrived home. There are sensors on every door within the man-cave, which not only enhance safety (the turntable won’t operate if the door is open), but
also notify the owner if the wine cellar door is left open or, if the bathroom is in use, audio from the games room will automatically filter through. Ultamation & Intuitive Homes designed a custom user interface for the Crestron TSW touch panels using Smart Graphics control to create a bespoke “man-cave” feel. The system is connected to the industrial controls of the turntable, to show the exact rotational position of the car. With a simple swipe, the car can be rotated to specific angles to show off its best side, and when the system is not in use the vehicle will always come to rest pointing outwards, towards the garage entrance. This worthy winner is the ultimate bespoke man-cave. It’s no wonder the owner says of the project: “From initial concepts…through to completion, the space has transformed into more than I could have ever hoped for and the level of automation and intelligent control we have in there adds genuine convenience, on top of the obvious wow factor.”

BEST LIGHTING APPLICATION XXX XXX
WINNER 4 KINGS SECURITY– MAYFAIR HOME
UNITED KINGDOM The lighting category covered projects from both the commercial and residential world, meaning there was more competition than ever for this already popular category. When we saw this entry, we immediately noticed that this was the most beautiful Lighting scheme of all the entries. Petra van Meeuwen, Customer Media Relations Director, Crestron International, also commented that “this project went beyond just lighting; it enhanced the experience for the owner in their home”. A complete lighting solutions was installed by 4 Kings Security, from circuitry to integration and control into this luxurious seven storey residence. The project includes full lighting and blind control with CLX controls. This was conceived and delivered to control all of the new LED lighting circuitry, bespoke chandeliers, strip, task and feature lighting. Each space was
programmed to client specific scenes, with the inbuilt ability for the client to amend each circuit individually, as well as the option to save each scene. Specified circuits use Crestron’s inbuilt astronomical clock for sunrise and sundown basic logic. Cameo keypads, touch panels and the Crestron app are used throughout the home, which allows the simple intuitive interfaces to display every option available within two or three presses. With simple to use backlight laser engraved buttons, each keypad is designed for instant operability for any user, including guests. Over 240 different circuits were designed and installed, and over 50 blind motors were also integrated into the property. Most importantly, 4 Kings Security was able to configure and programme each single LED circuit to prevent low power blinking and strobing. The pool area proved a particular challenge for the integrator as it featured 72 individual DMX colour LED fittings, DMX barrisol, LED mains dimming fittings
and LED strip lighting all working in the same area. However, 4 Kings Security successfully integrated them all into one seamless control for the client, who commented: “The lighting system is a wonder, allowing me to control complex spaces with a press of a button. Reassigning keys on the touch panel and setting my own scenes is so easy.” The advantage of using Crestron in this project is that it allowed 4 Kings Security to integrate a range of disparate lighting controls. The team were able to consider using different technologies and suppliers, confident in the knowledge that they would always be able to find a way to integrate it successfully. Given the scale and grandeur of the project, the only choice was Crestron. No matter how many lighting circuits had to be controlled, it would be simple to accomplish with Crestron. On top of this, Crestron Smart Graphics on the touch panels and iPads allowed simplicity of control that is intuitive and inviting yet remains all encompassing.

XXX XXX BEST EDUCATION PROJECT...
DOUBLE WINNER!
CAVERION NORGE AS – NTNU HEALTH CARE SIMLAB
NORWAY This outstanding project was worthy of two prizes at this year’s awards: Best Education Project and Unique Application. It demonstrates how Crestron can be used within healthcare to improve teaching through simulation. Simulation in the medical industry is vital to allow medical personnel to try and fail without the risk of losing lives, so when Caverion Norge AS was challenged to create a new Medical Simulation centre for Norwegian University of Science and Technology’s
Faculty of Health and Social Science, NTNU, there was no room for error. The main challenge was the lack of IP Medical Simulation systems that could easily be integrated with an AV solution, for example no existing simulation suppliers provide a 4K platform. Despite these roadblocks, Caverion Norge AS managed to merge Laerdal simulation technology with Crestron systems seamlessly, using a DM-MD-128x128 matrix as a platform. Instead of the traditional solution of having the Operator Stations and Training Simulators next to each other with a one-way mirror in-between,
NTNU wanted a flexible solution where a 50in 4K display replaced the oneway mirror to allow the customer to centralise much of the simulator hardware. Instead of several standalone specialised simulators there is one operator room complete with four Operator Stations that can each control the six remote Training Simulators. Thanks to the Crestron TWS 1050 user interface, the operator can choose whether to speak to the students, the facilitators or to be the voice of the manikin. The core of the simulation centre is the Crestron DM-MD-128x128

matrix, currently running to just 50% capacity, with all cable and DM hardware platforms being 4K. Six classrooms, which were also part of the design, are equipped with smaller DM matrixes, each connected to the DM-MD-128x128 matrix with two inputs and two outputs. The centralised videoconference codecs may be routed to any classroom or any Training Simulator, which means that demonstrations can be shown to many students instantaneously, instead of just groups of 10-20 students in the Training Simulator. Crestron USBEXT-DM takes care of the KVM for the
Laerdal Medical SimView Servers that are all connected. Each Training Simulator has two 1080p IP cameras set up with dual stream unicast, one 720p stream for the Laerdal Medical SimView Server and one 1080p stream that, through the Crestron DMC-STR, connects to the DM-MD-128x128 matrix. A third 4K camera connected to a DM-TX1-4K-C1G is the Operator Station’s ‘window’ and is routed to a 4K 50in display. Patient monitors at each Training Simulator are connected to a DM-TX14K-C-1G. By having the Laerdal Medical solution connected to the DM-MD-
128x128 matrix, the client is able to route any signal to any connected classroom or via any of the four codecs to any external part. It’s also possible to route audio/video from any classroom to one or more classrooms. What Caverion Norge AS achieved with this project is not only excellence in unique application and integration, but they also created a potential blueprint for the future of medical simulation solutions. It’s an astonishing project that goes beyond the boundaries of commercial or residential integration, to achieve something far more important for humankind.

ELECTRIC STRING – MULLEN LOWE, C-SPACE
UNITED KINGDOM When exclusive brand agency Mullen Lowe Group was looking for an integrator to install an AV solution into its worldwide headquarters at C-Space, London, Electric String was the installer of choice. The requirement was for the highest quality signal distribution to 18 zones, coupled with simplicity and adaptability, so that intuitive pushing of content from various edit suites to meeting rooms and executive offices is possible. Care was required to ensure that the clients need for an ultra-minimalist design with modern industrial overtones were met, and one of the biggest challenges was that the whole project had to be completed in just six weeks. To deliver the project on time Electric String combined their efficient working practices with Crestron’s best in class technology. The system design was based around a fully 4K compliant 32x32 DM matrix for video distribution and two SWAMPI24X8 for audio. DM-RMC4K-SCALER-C room receivers were deployed throughout to negate any possible issues with video resolutions and with the extremely restrictive ceiling depth available, the speakers of
choice were SAROS pendants for the majority of areas. The central control was achieved with a PRO3 processor. Inputs are from DM-TX-401-C units in each meeting space and film edit suites. These are then fed back into the central DM matrix on 8G input card with audio from local Apple TV units distributed to the SAROS speakers by the SWAMPI processors. In the meeting spaces, TT-111-B plug points ensure a sleek aesthetic, coupled with certified Crestron cables. Standard user controls were kept to a minimum. Cameo keypads feature in the meeting spaces giving basic on/off and volume access and all other signal routing and automation is undertaken autonomously, taking advantage of the advanced signal processing available via the DM system. Content from the film edit suite mixing stations is fed into the central DM/SWAMPI matrix over 8G and can be accessed anywhere via two administration iPad routing controllers using the Crestron app. Previously, film edit suit content was only accessible by transferring saved copies of edits to individual laptops which made the process cumbersome. The client now has the ability to directly access content from the film edit suites and see content “live”, which enables true
collaborative working to be achieved. This has seen a large increase in the technology being used compared to their previous system, which was not user friendly. This improves the offering from the agency which is increasingly involved in digital content branding. The administration iPads enable complete flexibility for facilities management to control the system, making working practices more efficient and allowing content management to be dynamically distributed. The quality of both the audio and video is a vast improvement on previous systems which enhances the reputation of the client in an increasingly competitive digital world. They are now looking to roll the project out globally. “Electric String somehow managed to achieve the unachievable by giving us a simple, elegant, top spec system in a ridiculously tight time frame. We have already seen the benefits in productivity and effectiveness; it has been such a success due to both the professionalism of the Electric String team and the awesome Crestron technology which is unbelievably good and a brand which Mullen Lowe Group is proud to be associated with at our global headquarters,” commented Rob Bose, Head of Facilities, Mullen Lowe Group.

ULTIMATE CRESTRON XX AWARD X XXX
WINNER JNV – NEW LOGIC II – DOKVAST TESLA MOTORS
NETHERLANDS Crestron decided that this project deserved a special prize due to JNV’s consistently high level projects, always completed to a high standard. This particular project stood out as JNV precisely matched the client’s needs for the AV to match its ethos of environmental efficiency and energy saving by using Crestron technology. Project Developer Dok Vast offers high-class and high-tech housing and distribution centres to national and international companies. In this case its client, TESLA MOTORS, was in need of an office and building environment that matched their own company structure and strategy. As a company, TESLA stands for energy and environmental efficient solutions. This part of its company DNA was required to be integrated in the work environment. In order to realise that environment, JNV created a system independent building app to control and
manage the entire building environment. Presented on touch panels and mobile devices, the app provides insight into all building related installations. Consumption of electricity, gas, water and energy provided by durable systems such as PV panels and grey water systems are integrated into the app. In addition, it enables the user to automatically ticket, manage and follow up certain outages and system failures. Finally the app includes direct access to all building related contracts, service level agreements, revision drawings and licenses. With this solution JNV has provided the ultimate facility to enable project developer Dokvast to offer future proof solutions to its tenants. The building ‘New Logic II’, rented by tenant TESLA MOTORS was the first in line to have the app solution integrated. Dok Vast specialised in creating sustainable and functional distribution environments. It believes that sustainable buildings are the future and because of that, functionality, feasibility, comfort and
technology are key considerations. The project received a BREEAM score of 5 stars, which is equivalent to “Outstanding”. The roof is prepared for 40,000sqm solar panels, to be fitted in the near future. The entire building is equipped with 100% automatic dimming LED lighting, a gas heat pump for the offices, motion sensors and daylight control. This all is managed by the JNV app, which controls all independent systems in one central interface, presented on touch panels and mobile devices. All independent systems are connected to each other using the Fusion interface created by JNV. All together the use of sustainable materials and the app control system by JNV resulted in an energy neutral building with a total BREEAM score of 91.22% and reduces the energy consumption by approximately 60%. Therefore, car producer TESLA MOTORS will seamlessly fit in this environment. For more information on Crestron, visit www.crestron.eu
