IBC Conference 2016: Transformation in the digital era Michael Lumley chairs the IBC2016 Conference Committee. He reveals the changes in this year’s conference structure, as well as looking at some of the highlights. When the committees behind the conference, together with the IBC team, start work on each year’s programme, our top objective is to serve our ever-changing, ever-expanding audience. It means continual development in what we do, while remaining relevant and reflecting all the changes in the electronic media and entertainment industry. This approach is reflected in our overall theme for this year’s conference – ‘Transformation in the Digital Era: Leadership, strategy and creativity in media and entertainment’. That statement underlines the fact that IBC is the place where the executives, leaders and strategic thinkers come to exchange ideas. It is easy to talk of ‘disruption’, but successful businesses do not allow themselves to be disrupted. They devote time and energy to forward-looking strategic thinking. The IBC2016 Conference has been carefully designed to be a central part of that industry foresight. For IBC2016 the conference committee have enjoyed the support of Susan Elkington, who is consultant director of content for IBC. “Our industry is going through dramatic changes – challenging and exciting at the same time,” said Elkington. “The conference will focus on how the entertainment and media sector is using the accelerating power of technology to transform its businesses. That makes it particularly relevant for the industry, which has a greater level of complexity than ever before.” The IBC Technical Papers have always been at the heart of the conference and remain absolutely critical.

Executives grilled at the IBC Conference
As I write, the peer reviewers are hard at work making their final selections, a task which is even tougher because this was a record year for submissions: 40 per cent more papers were proposed than last year. Nothing could be a clearer indication that IBC is the place where all researchers and developers want to present their latest work. The technical papers are woven into the whole of the conference, and we have dedicated even more time to the Advances in Technology stream than in recent years, but it is just one of the streams. We have taken a fresh look at the programme to help delegates navigate through the issues affecting them, in sessions that appeal to their particular needs. Alongside Advances in Technology we have four more
core themes which cover the whole value chain: Content and Production, Business Transformation, Platform Futures and Audiences and Advertising. Within each stream, and across the whole conference, there is an editorial plan which guides delegates through the issues and the latest thinking on the solutions. Within and around the streams are some crosscultural events. For example, on Friday morning there is a forum discussion featuring the CTOs of four top businesses: Sony Global Entertainment, Cisco, Discovery and Ericsson; while Saturday is ‘IP Day’. We have six keynote speakers in plenary sessions, of great value to all delegates. They are Dominique Delport of Havas Group and Vivendi Content, Manuel Cubero of KDG-Vodafone, advertising
guru Sir Martin Sorrel of WPP, Erik Huggers of Vevo, and Shahrzad Rafati of Broadband TV. Alongside these keynote presentations and the five key streams in our conference, there are three more strands. The IBC Big Screen Experience uses a stateof-the-art projection and sound installation to create the perfect environment to examine the future of cinema and large-scale out of home content. As well as conference sessions, the amazing installation by the IBC technical team and its supporters also allows us to screen the ever popular movies – this year for the first time in Dolby Vision HDR – to which all visitors are invited. IBC Rising Stars is our platform for young media
professionals and industry starters, designed to inform, nurture and inspire nextgeneration talent. Their dedicated sessions include insights about latest industry developments, cutting-edge technology trends and career progression in the course of an intensive one-day programme. And on Thursday we will once more be hosting our invitationonly, behind-closed-doors C-Level Conference, the IBC Leaders’ Summit. The conference programme is available at IBC.org/programme and we have innovative online tools to help you plan your way through the conference. Registration is already open, so do not delay in seeing everything that is on offer and booking the right pass for you. I look forward to meeting you all in Amsterdam in September.

The IBC Exhibition is expanding IBC is pleased to introduce Roger Thornton as the new chair of the Exhibition Committee Roger has developed a vast understanding of IBC during his long career at Quantel, where he spent a lot of time planning for and attending IBC Exhibitions, and is now ready for his first IBC in his new role as chairman. Here is his review on the expanding exhibition. Before talking about IBC2016, I must pay tribute to my predecessor John Holton who has shaped the exhibition for what seems like forever, writes Roger Thornton. IBC continually moves on and so does our home, the RAI Amsterdam. If you attended IBC2015 you may have noticed some construction and development around the venue. This is now a new exhibition hall, which has been eagerly incorporated into our plans to expand IBC’s footprint. To allow the new hall to be introduced into the exhibition, hall numbering has had to be adjusted. Located next to Hall 8, it is only sensible that the new hall should be Hall 9. That means old Hall 9 becomes Hall 11, and old Hall 11 becomes Hall 12. Hall 10 keeps its number. The ballroom of the Elicium, which houses Sony and IBC TV, is now Hall 13. Last year’s new building, the Amtrium, is now Hall 4, and is again home to Imagine Communications. Among the exhibitors taking advantage of the new Hall 9 is my former company, now known as SAM (Snell Advanced Media).
The vast temporary structure at the front of the RAI hosting our IBC Content Everywhere Hub and many of our new media exhibits is still Hall 14, and the temporary building housing bespoke meeting rooms is now Hall 15. That totals fifteen halls plus the outdoor exhibits, making 2016 by far the biggest IBC in terms of floor space. What is filling all these halls? Most obviously, more exhibitors than ever before. We have seen a real rush for exhibition space, not least from businesses in the multi-platform distribution and monetisation space, and from app developers and advertising innovators. One important feature is the IBC Launch Pad, located in the new Hall 9. This is a dedicated space for first-time exhibitors, helping them claim their ground in the leading international event for the industry. IBC helps them by providing a cost-effective package and they help us by bringing new ideas and new business to IBC. I have already mentioned two of our feature areas. Over in Hall 3 you will find another, the IBC Technology in Action Theatre. This features a series of industry case studies at the leading edge of technology, including the cloud and IP as well as production, post and delivery. The sessions are free to attend, and are recorded so you can watch them later on IBC TV video on demand.

This year also sees the return of the popular IBC Hackfest, doubling in size and being taken to the next level. From 09:00 on Saturday the brightest individuals in coding come together in the Diamond Lounge to apply ideas and software solutions to generate innovative concepts leveraging partner technologies. We create the environment and see what they come up with. For forward thinkers, the IBC Future Zone is another favourite. We talk to the world’s leading R&D labs and universities, and the exhibit their latest projects and prototypes. The researchers working on them come along too, so not only can you see and test what they are thinking, you can influence the direction of their work. The IBC Future Zone is also home to the IBC Technical Posters, which have been
reimagined for 2016 and promise to be more engaging and more interactive. You will have a chance to discuss the ideas with the authors, making it even more interactive. The Future Zone is just outside Hall 8. All these special features are free to visitors, as are events like movie screenings and the IBC Awards Ceremony. IBC even give you a free tram ticket to get around Amsterdam. IBC is a comprehensive exhibition featuring not only all the major players but also all emerging and innovative new companies. To help you get around we lay the exhibition out logically, with similar products grouped together and broad zones for content creation, management and delivery. All this in a venue, and in a city, that is ideal for networking. We structure the event to make

IBC Innovation Awards reflect hot topics The shortlist for the IBC2016 Innovation Awards reflects the real issues in the industry, including 4K video, IP connectivity and OTT services. Also reflected is the global nature of IBC, with finalists coming from countries as far apart as China and the USA. Michael Lumley, chair of the international judging panel, put the awards into context. “They are unique because we judge on the benefits each entry delivers to the end user,” he said. “Ultimately, the award is handed over on stage not to a company developing the newest widgets but to the broadcaster or media company which benefits from a real collaborative process to develop the best possible solution.” The awards are presented on Sunday night, in an unmissable ceremony to which all IBC visitors are welcome. So who is on the shortlist for this year’s awards? The first category is for the most innovative project in content creation, and two of the three finalists focus on making sport even more engaging on television. BT Sport has added sophisticated augmented reality to its studio coverage of European Champions League football, including a signature shot flying over a map of Europe to the stadiums hosting each game. Working in a huge and largely black studio was a challenge for camera tracking company Ncam, who collaborated with Moov, RT
Software and Timeline Television to create a solution. Pylon Camera, developed by ESPN, replaces corner posts in the high impact sport of American football. Crush impact zones had to be fitted to avoid injuring players, while still delivering multiple views from each pylon. The pictures are not only sensational, they have helped referees judge critical touchdowns in key games. Technology partners include BSI and Gilman. The third finalist is the live IP studio built by the EBU and housed at VRT Sandbox in Brussels. It tackles the difficult challenge of real interconnectivity between equipment from multiple vendors to build a practical production studio. The long list of technology partners includes Axon, D&MS, Dwesam, EVS, Genelec, Grass Valley, Lawo, Nevion, Tektronix and Trilogy. There are three finalists in the Content Management category. MoovIT Production Services was faced with the challenge of shooting the Endemol Shine Germany reality show Wild Island off the coast of Central America but posting it in Cologne, Germany. Working with EditShare, a remote workflow allowed the content to be secured in a hostile environment with an unpredictable power supply, saving 50 per cent on time and resources. Ketnet, the children’s channel from VRT in Belgium, has been transformed into an interactive,

curated online experience. The first app was aimed at two to five year olds, and concentrated on stimulating educational experiences rather than simply offering programmes and clips. The solution – developed by local company Small Town Heroes – saw young viewers spending 50 per cent of their time using the app. Returning to reality television, Tencent Video in China wanted to make all 120 HD cameras and two 360˚ cameras available at all times on its show The 15 of Us. Tencent worked with technology partner Grass Valley to manage 3,000 hours of content a day for editing, packaging and approval. For the first name on the shortlist for Content Delivery we return to BT Sport, and its Ultra HD channel which
provides 4K coverage of football, rugby, MotoGP, squash, NBA basketball and more. The company worked with its outside broadcast partner Timeline Television to build Europe’s first Ultra HD 4K truck, including cameras from Sony and a SAM switcher. Other technical partners were Ericsson, Fuji, ChyronHego and Telegenic. Swisscom is looking forward to a future where much television may be viewed on demand, and considered how it could help consumers discover the content they like. Working with ThinkAnalytics, it developed a new user experience which allows users to browse through all the content shown on more than 250 television channels with personalised
recommendations. UEFA, the European football governing body, recognised that football fans want much more than just simple coverage of the game. With technology partners deltatre, EVS and the EBU it developed its Next Generation Services Project, delivering a host of additional content from data feeds to multiple angles and linked second screen experiences. Nine great projects are in the running. Who will take home the awards? Find out at the IBC Awards Ceremony at 18:30 on Sunday evening in the RAI Auditorium. Free-to-attend for all IBC visitors, this year’s show looks set to be an outstanding evening, with some very special guests and stunning content shared on the IBC Big Screen.

OPINION
Assuring the video services of tomorrow Rapid changes in video distribution means that guaranteeing a subscriber’s service experience is paramount, says Mikael Dahlgren, CEO of Agama Technologies. The video and TV distribution landscape is changing. Not so long ago, most video distribution operators focused on a single distribution solution – be it cable, IPTV or broadcast – and the pace of change within these solutions was modest. Today, traditional operators are challenged by new entrants, mainly OTT providers, and often respond by adding OTTsolutions of their own. Further technological developments, service agility, outsourcing and virtualisation within the field of video distribution are only going
to increase competition in the industry. Guaranteeing service quality will be more important than ever. So, how can you get a consistent view of your service delivery if it is done over a combination of RF, IPTV and OTT? How do you handle the fact that parts of the delivery infrastructure are outside your control, e.g. an outsourced CDN? How do you manage the subscriber experience? At Agama, we believe in focusing on the subscriber. Instead of mainly tracking the
services from creation and out through the distribution, we concentrate on the subscriber and work our way back from there. Ultimately, it is the services as perceived by the subscriber that matter, regardless of distribution technology. Understanding how you perform at the point of consumption not only provides insights into how the service is perceived by the consumer – it also provides an excellent opportunity to understand how the diverse distribution solution is performing, without
having to be deployed within it. We are looking forward to supporting operators in this ongoing transformation in video service distribution and the possibilities created by it. With our solid experience in client device monitoring and our longstanding focus on software-

has gone one step further and outfitted the state of the art IBC Big Screen with HDR projection provided by long-term supporters, Dolby Labs. In addition, Dolby Atmos immersive audio will be featured again powered by QSC. This will enable delegates to appreciate a series
of presentations and screenings which illustrate the emerging technologies which filmmakers, studios and exhibitors have at their disposal to attract audiences to the box office. The Friday and Saturday sessions will examine how new tools such as light field imaging and advances in performance capture are merging the disciplines of production and post to form new virtual filmmaking techniques. The culmination will be a masterclass from VFX guru, Kevin Baillie, on the application of virtual sets in features such as Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk. With virtual reality being taken seriously by Hollywood, an expert panel asks what VR means for storytellers and the movie industry. the impact of experiential innovation (from HDR and wider colour ranges to immersive audio and High Frame Rates) on the future of the theatrical format. Featured speakers include Warner Bros’ VP technology, Michael Zink, and Curt Behlmer SVP of content solutions at Dolby. There’s also analysis of the impact big data is making on cinema exhibition. This ranges from how films are being programmed, to how they are optimised for in-cinema performance and how audience insights are being leveraged. Steffen Schier, head of film at CinemaxX Entertainment will be part of this panel. Don’t forget that the IBC Big Screen Experience is free to IBC attendees as part of your IBC2016 entry. Look out too for announcements of the film blockbusters which are screened for free as part of the IBC Big Screen Experience and which highlight the pinnacle of creative and technical achievement.

Director Ang Lee keynotes IBC The Hub of Content IBC Big Screen Experience
Everywhere Europe
By Adrian Pennington By Chris Forrester IBC is excited to present Life of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee who will present a Keynote address on Monday 12 September, 11:00 headlining the IBC Big Screen Experience. The Oscar-winning screenwriter, producer and director is credited with pushing the boundaries of filmmaking, and filmmaking techniques, in his work and will talk about technology-related challenges and opportunities in his IBC address. Specifically, the Taiwanese director will discuss the cinematography techniques used in the new Sony Pictures release Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which uses a filmmaking method combining 4K resolution with 3D and frame rates as high

as 120fps that has been dubbed ‘cinematic reality’. It will be the first mainstream feature ever released in the format which presents a challenge to existing projection systems. Julian Pinn, executive producer, IBC Big Screen
Experience, said: “For more than two decades, Ang Lee has shown true mastery in utilising cutting-edge science and cinematographic techniques towards his creation of some of the very finest works of cinematic story-telling art.”
IBC TV shapes the news
IBC TV airs live from a studio in Hall 13
One of the best ways to keep up to date with all the news from IBC is through IBC TV, the event’s own television channel. It is produced onsite, and packed with comment, interviews and opinions from some of the key thinkers and opinion leaders at IBC. There are a number of live broadcasts every day from the studio, based in Hall 13. The rest of the 24-hour schedule is made up of reports from
10 IBC 2016 Preview v2JRFRJMcK-FINAL.indd 1
around the show and on topics of interest to the IBC audience. If you were used to waking up to IBC TV a few years back, then you will be pleased to know that there is a special breakfast edition streamed each morning – and every official IBC hotel offers free WiFi to guests to ensure you stay in the loop. Every keynote session in the conference is streamed live, with informed comment
and debate to follow. The channel’s popular anchor Martin Stanford will analyse the sessions with industry experts. As well as the streamed service, all of the content will be packaged and added to the rapidly growing archive of content available on demand. You can access the archive at any time at IBC.org.vod making it an invaluable resource all year round.
Interest in OTT online distribution is attracting new audiences to IBC. The role of the Content Everywhere Europe Hub is to explain the ‘content everywhere’ opportunity to these first-time visitors as well as to those from IBC’s loyal core audience who are trying to understand how broadband fits alongside traditional broadcast. As this IBC Daily Preview is being put together, executive producer Ian Volans (of Volans Consulting) is busy shaping his impressive list of VIP speakers into a final schedule for his free-to-attend Content Everywhere Hub sessions, but he promises to deliver compelling content. He says that the 13:00 sessions (Friday-Sunday) take quite a broad look at the OTT space while the 15:30 slots on Friday and Saturday have a sporting emphasis (same times for Monday’s sessions). Content Everywhere panellists will debate how customisation of content, personalisation of the user experience and learning the tastes and habits of each individual user are the key skills that all content distributors now need to master. They will also explore what multiscreen delivery really means for today’s media brands, broadcasters, operators and service providers. IBC’s Content Everywhere Hub is located in the heart of Hall 14 where a host of exhibitors will be
demonstrating business models designed for longterms sustainability and technical success. Volans explains that his speakers will provide detailed advice, and case studies: “Many of the traditional boundaries between different players in the value chain have become blurred in the Content Everywhere world. I’ll be working with all panel speakers on a common vocabulary to cut through this confusion.” Included in the schedule are speakers talking about live streaming of niche sports, for example. Volans says sessions will also explore the technical challenges that live streaming presents for a genre where viewers have zero tolerance for interruptions. The session will discuss the potential impact of platforms such as Facebook Live, Periscope and Snapchat and share insights gained in football, horse racing, boxing and in territories as diverse as Germany and Thailand. Key to success in Content Everywhere is discovery, and helping audiences find, select and watch content. Panels will also explore how viewing habits are changing, the extent to which consumers are viewing OTT to supplement pay TV, the emergence of ‘dip-in-and-out’ and the implications for business models and customer service strategies. One word of advice to would-be attendees: grab a seat early as these free sessions are justifiably hugely popular.

Sir Martin Sorrell headlines IBC Conference IBC Conference: Friday Keynote 9 Sept, 14:00, Forum By Chris Forrester
Sir Martin Sorrell is IBC’s star Keynote, and is likely to make a few more headlines as he addresses ‘Advertising and Marketing in Transformation’.
Sorrell stresses that he doesn’t cultivate controversy but it certainly follows him around, not least the annual battles with his WPP shareholders (where
he is chief executive) over his current €90 million salary and compensation package. Nevertheless, he can claim with some considerable justification to be usually right, and has grown his WPP business massively over the past 30 years. He was with Saatchi & Saatchi

in 1975, and is frequently referred to as ‘the third brother’ as group finance director until 1984. He privately invested in the listed – but sleepy – Wire & Plastic Products in 1985, and used it as his aggressive acquisition vehicle for a true revolution in the advertising industry, buying 18 ad-related giants in a three-year period including J. Walter Thompson (in 1987 in a €500 million hostile take-over) and followed this up with similar prizes including Ogilvy & Mather (€761m), Young & Rubicam (€5bn) and Grey Advertising (€1.33bn). In an extremely prescient move, WPP in 1999 bought market research firm Taylor Nelson Sofres (€2bn) and in 2012 digital ad-agency AKQA (€475m). Indeed, WPP has embraced the digital world in all its guises, and in the process taking its overall revenues to a massive €15.7bn, and a market capitalisation of some €27.6bn. WPP has won numerous creative Awards from its 194,000 staff, and is the world’s largest communication group. Sir Martin noted at a recent meeting that the WPP share price had risen by 98 per cent between 2011 and 2015, compared with a 5.8 per cent rise in the FTSE 100 over the same period. He maintains a work ethic that might exhaust a man of half his age, and firmly resists attempts to force him into retirement. “I’ve said I’ll carry on until they cart me out to the glue factory,” Sorrell jokes. His IBC Keynote promises to deliver a unique insight on broadcasting, narrowcasting, and the role of advertising and marketing in today’s world.

Discover everything: IBC’s Feature Areas By Adrian Pennington The IBC Experience is all about immersing yourself in the white heat of the very latest trends and technologies impacting the industry and getting to connect with the people driving change. The Feature Areas are designed for this very purpose. Intelligently curated and programmed to enrich your understanding of developments at play across the Exhibition and Conference, these unique attractions are also great places to network with people from all corners of the industry. No-one wants to miss the IBC Future Zone, adjacent to Hall 8, where extraordinary ideas leap from the labs of academic and broadcast research institutes into potential reality. Previous years have showcased 8K and virtual reality so if those technologies look less science fiction now which inventions will impress you in 2016? The IBC Big Screen Experience is one of the six main streams of the IBC Conference and focuses on how emerging technologies like High Dynamic Range and High Frame Rates are being used to deliver a more immersive cinema experience.
The Hub is a great venue to network
Speakers from Disney, Warner Bros and Dolby will present and showcase technologies at the impressive RAI Auditorium which is upgraded for 2016 with a HDR projection system. The IBC Launch Pad, located in Hall 9, showcases exhibitors who are not only new to IBC but may well be new to you too. It’s well worthwhile seeking them out for the fresh perspectives they can provide on topics as diverse as content delivery, image processing and storage. A highlight of every IBC are the IBC Innovation Awards which recognise the inspiration, expertise and sheer endeavour that teams of vendors,
service suppliers and media organisations make to achieve breakthroughs in content creation, content management and content delivery. This year’s finalists include a remote workflow to produce a German reality show on two secluded islands; the management of 3,000 hours of content a day for a full year for a Chinese video portal; and UEFA’s multi-angle delivery to second screens. Every IBC visitor is welcome to attend the fabulous Sunday night ceremony. For a close-up on actual case studies of solutions in the field check out the IBC Technology in Action Theatre. Located in
Hall 3, this Feature Area hosts a wide-ranging programme of use-cases and demonstrations covering cloud, IP, production, post production and delivery. The programme changes daily, is free to attend, and is a prime opportunity to quiz those who have already put technology to use. Hone your knowledge of the consumer behaviours, business models and technologies driving content engagement over connected devices at IBC Content Everywhere Europe, in Hall 14. The heart of IBC Content Everywhere Europe is the Hub which hosts a daily programme of two-hour
technical sessions plus panel discussions and no-nonsense product demonstrations. It’s also a great place for informal meetings and networking. Tools and techniques for live streaming is key focus here with sessions trained on ways to leverage social networks during live events and dynamic ad insertion for live simulcast. Look out too for the return of IBC Hackfest which encourages innovation in software coding live on the IBC floor. All the Feature Areas are embedded throughout IBC, are open daily and are free to attend at any time to help you make the most of your IBC experience.

Go direct to Ultra HD IBC’s Keynote attractions Blackmagic Design By Carolyn Giardina Blackmagic Design is coming to IBC with a large product line up including its recently launched Blackmagic Duplicator 4K. The device allows delivery of Ultra HD content to consumers by recording files onto inexpensive SD cards that can be distributed to customers the moment an event is finished – potentially increasing a content distributor’s revenue. “Virtually all televisions sold are now Ultra HD models, said Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty. “The problem for consumers is that there’s very little content available. [Duplicator 4K] is an extremely affordable and convenient way to deliver Ultra HD content directly to
consumers that they can play on their Ultra HD TVs today. The technology includes 25 built-in SD card recorders, multi rate 12G-SDI connections and a realtime H.265 encoder. The company’s DaVinci Resolve version 12.5 editing and colour correction software is also set to get a lot of attention and will be at IBC. It includes 1,000 enhancements and 250 new features which includes major additions to its growing editing toolset (including new trim operations, ripple cut and paste insert commands), as well as new colour tools such as improved HDR support. The Blackmagic stand will also have the latest versions of its Fusion visual effects and motion graphics tool. 7.H20

IBC Conference By Chris Forrester IBC’s Keynote speakers are selected on the basis that they have something to say. They frequently use their session to be deliberately provocative and to kick-start or enhance a debate on which they have a special interest. This year’s Keynoters are no exception. Elsewhere in this issue we focus on Sir Martin Sorrell of WPP. But also guaranteed to draw delegates into the Forum (Thursday, 8 September, 09:00) for his unique insight is Dominique Delport, global MD/ chairman of Havas Media. Delport is also a skilled and experienced programme-maker and host, not least with the launch of Merci pour l’Info at Canal Plus in 2003, and the Emmy Award-winning CULT show on France 5. In February 2008, Vincent BollorÊ promoted
him as chairman/CEO of Havas Media France and his promotions have come rapidly, not least his September 2015 appointment as president of Vivendi Content. Delport will be joined by Dr Manuel Cubero who heads up Vodafone’s Kable Deutschland business and is VP (and former president) of the Cable Europe association of operators. The two will have an on-stage discussion that promises to be a fascinating insight into their expectations for their future businesses, Later on Thursday (17:15) Tom Toumazis MBE will deliver a ‘big picture’ discussion on business models and strategies in his Futureproofing Your Business session. Toumazis is chairman of Tagsmart/TVbeat and a nonexecutive director at the Lad Bible Group. Toumazis has an enviable employment record including spells at ITV, Eurosport, EMAP, Yahoo, Disney, and as CCO at Endemol Worldwide. Friday’s Keynoter is Erik Huggers,

president/CEO at Vevo. His topic is ‘Online & Broadcasting: How the online players are evolving and what it means to broadcasting’. Vevo is YouTube’s biggest single content provider, with major stakes held by Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music. Feast for the eyes and mind Technical Papers and Posters By Adrian Pennington

Friday night is party night One of the greatest benefits of attending IBC is the chance to network with people from the industry from around the world. They might be old friends or people you have just met, but you can be sure that they will understand and share the challenges your business is facing. IBC provides multiple networking opportunities including the famous IBC Party on Friday night. Taking place at the end of the opening day of the exhibition this is an evening of fun, entertainment, food and drink. The party starts at 18:30 in the Diamond Lounge. It’s easy to find, just follow the signs, and the crowds! All around the venue you will find
plenty of good food and freeflowing drinks. There will be plenty of music, performers and dancing, with some dedicated quieter areas for those who want to talk. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Gold and Silver Pass delegates, and Friday’s Bronze and Green Pass holders, will find a ticket in their delegate bags. Each exhibiting company also has a number of tickets, based on the size of the stand, so exhibitors can celebrate making it through at least the first day. You can register for a conference pass to gain entry to the party, at IBC.org/ register.
IABM’s ‘must attend’ breakfast IBC Conference By Chris Forrester This IBC session (9 September, 08:00, Forum) is truly unique in that it gives delegates a fasttrack appraisal as to what’s happening in the real world and how the IABM’s membership see the future. Chaired by John Ive, a well-known IBC expert, he asks the key questions for all delegates: Where is the smart money being spent, how much, who is spending it and on what technology? Is there an economic slowdown in broadcast and media, or is this new era helping to fuel more expenditure? The IABM has the answers.
16 IBC 2016 Preview vJRFRJMcK-FINAL.indd 1
Ive’s panel includes Peter White, CEO at the IABM; Steve Canepa, GM/Global Telecommunications, Media & Entertainment at IBM; Charlie Vogt, CEO at Imagine Communications, and Wenbing Yao, director of strategy and marketing at Huawei Technologies. Using the IABM’s analysis of data from its members – drawn from major industry vendors as well as smaller supplies of crucial equipment to broadcasters (and representing some 80 per cent of the market’s revenues) – this is an unmissable slice of market intelligence. And there’s usually a croissant for early birds!
This is a bumper year for submissions of Technical Papers to the IBC Conference with 40 per cent more synopses than last year under the scrutiny of IBC’s expert committee. That means the calibre of research and endeavour is higher than ever and gives added ballast to the IBC Technical Papers’ already world-class reputation. IBC delegates can be the first to hear this year’s selection of 13 Papers in the Advances in Technology stream of the Conference. This will include the introduction of six session themes, entirely new to IBC, which reflect the fast-moving pace of today’s media industry. These new topics are: case studies in global UHDTV roll-out; world firsts in studio IP trials; advances in virtual reality and 360° television; the internet of things; technologies for targeted advertising and novel applications of metadata. Highlights include a presentation on the 8K production of the Rio Olympics and the first Ultra HD production
with high dynamic range, to be distributed around the globe by satellite – from the Vatican. Questions for explorers in virtual reality, such as how are viewer’s best prompted to be looking in the right direction, does live 360° distribution work and how might we broadcast mixed reality, are addressed. The popular Cutting Edge Technologies session features Papers on ideas for crowdsourced news gathering; object-based media creativity; and technology for corneal gaze-tracking. Since metadata has now become such a powerful resource IBC devotes a Papers session inspiring novel ways to exploit it. How, for example, can smart lens metadata assist post production? And, can timestamped metadata provide the ultimate shopping experience – buy anything you see on the screen? Look out too for a special session on media accessibility for the sensory-impaired. Papers sessions operate much like an academic conference, with speakers presenting the content of their written papers. These are formally peer-reviewed with the best ones published in a special
Run 4K 4Charity Fast becoming an IBC tradition, this year’s charity fun run takes place on Saturday morning, in Amstel Park, close to the RAI. Both 4K technologies and the 4K run – you can walk if you prefer – are hot topics at IBC2016. The IBC run is part of a series held at major industry events around the world. “Registrations have doubled for each event in
the series, and total donations now top a quarter of a million dollars,” said organiser Laura Barber, better known as director of marketing at Elemental Technologies. “The rapid growth of this event has been fantastic, but the potential for its continued expansion is even more exciting,” she said. “Please sign up today and make an impact!”

edition of an IET professional journal. Competition for the Best Conference Paper Award has never been keener. This year’s Posters are presented on individual electronic screens in a dedicated area of the Future Zone. They are a bit like an art gallery, where authors stand next to their works and describe them to visitors. “We think that ‘Posters’ and Papers are each best suited to different kinds of content – ‘Posters’ allow more interactivity and the presenter can adapt to the knowledge and interest of individual visitors,” explained Nick Lodge, co-lead of the Advances in Technology stream. Since the Future Zone is open to all IBC exhibition visitors as well as delegates the Posters have a huge potential audience.
Organisations benefitting from the IBC2016 event include Heifer International, bringing sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty, and Jeugdsportfonds, an Amsterdam charity which helps children whose families cannot afford athletics club membership. Corporate sponsors include Aspera, ChyronHego, Dolby and Xstream. Media partners include NewBay and Rapid TV News. 4K 4Charity starts at 07:30. Snacks and drinks will be available once you have completed the course, giving you a chance to refuel before heading over to IBC. Registration for the run is now open at 4K4Charity.com.

Ericsson’s Martin Guillaume presents OTT insight
In July, financial ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service put out a report suggesting that the reign of pay-TV and network TV, normally the most stable, predictable and highest-margin segments of broadcasting, is rapidly eroding. The report was blunt, saying OTT services and digital ad platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Facebook, Apple, YouTube and Sling TV are breaking down the long-standing practice of contractual aggregating and bundling content for distribution through closed-system set-top boxes. This is not exactly ‘news’ to IBC delegates where the ‘death of linear TV’ has been debated for some years. But for IBC2016 Niko Waesche, global industry head/media & entertainment at GfK, has assembled a panel of experts to examine the latest state of play (10 September, E102, 13:30). Waesche says that the ingredients for Netflix and Amazon Prime’s success are exclusive content, ownership of data and delivery and control of their subscriber bases. “Is vertical integration the industry blueprint for the future?” he asks. “For decades, the industry has prospered with horizontally segmented industry models. If this indeed is the only blueprint, then this has huge implications for licence content owners,

New cinema technologies set to stun IBC Big Sceen Experience By Adrian Pennington As the USS Enterprise comes under attack in Star Trek Beyond, audiences at Barco Escape screenings will experience uniquely the alien onslaught from horizontal projections to the left and right. The most high-profile title yet issued in Barco’s panoramic exhibition format will compete with other versions of Paramount’s blockbuster mastered for Imax and Dolby Cinema. “The industry is working to create an experience so compelling that consumers will put down their iPad and leave the sofa to enjoy an experience they can’t get anywhere else,” says Todd Hoddick, CEO of Barco Escape. “Experiential cinema is the future.” While some presentation technologies are not new, combined together they are designed to retain cinema’s edge over home entertainment. These include 3D, 4K, High Dynamic Range (HDR) – which includes wider colour gamut
(WCG) – motion seating, screens with enhanced audio, laser projection and high frame rates (HFR). IHS Technology analyst David Hancock dubs it “the premiumisation” of cinema. The IBC Big Screen Experience conference sessions take stock of these developments which have implications for future business and film creation. ‘Digital Cinema Investment 2.0’ asks the most pertinant question ‘Where’s the ROI?’ (12 September 16:00). While the savings on 35mm prints were simple enough to calculate, the new revenue – if any – from digital enhancements are harder to quantify. A panel will examine whether the numbers stack up for continued digital investment. One of the key investment decisions for exhibitors is laser projection. This technology throws greater light to the screen to lift gloomy stereo 3D presentations and is essential for showing the full impact of High Dynamic Range and Wider Colour Gamut (the art and science of which is explored in detail on 12 September 13:00 with Warner Bros, VP, technology, Michael Zink).
Barco Escape: Part of the new exhibition arsenal
An update subtitled ‘Laser projection: is it ready for wide deployment?’ (11 September, 09:30) offers views from the Odeon Group’s head of cinema technology, Mike Bradbury and rival projection vendors Barco and Sony. Dolby has arguably been the most successful vendor in promoting studio content into theatres outfitted with its technology. More than 1,800 cinemas worldwide can play films mastered in Dolby Atmos

When and to what extent do you push the button on swapping out SDI for IP networks? How much confidence should you place in the Cloud? Is investment in 4K UHD good to go today or is it worth holding fire for 8K? Should 5G mobile or the Internet of Things be on your radar – and if so what does this even mean for your business? Among the speakers are Dave Ward, SVP, chief architect and CTO, engineering at Cisco; Discovey Communictions’ CTO John Honeycutt; Ulf Ewaldsson, who performs the same role for Ericsson, and Tamara Leemans, CTO for Belgium cable operator Voo. A 12-year Discovery veteran, Honeycutt most recently served as EVP and COO for Discovery
Networks International, where he led the operational structure of its growing international business operations including the 2013 acquisition of SBS Nordics – the largest transaction in Discovery’s history. In addition, he was a key member of the team that led Discovery’s acquisition of a controlling interest in Eurosport International. Also on the panel is Spencer Stephens, CTO at Sony Pictures Entertainment. He leads the studio’s technology development group working on technology innovation and application. The group’s role touches on every part of the path from the on-set technology including cameras and lens, through post-production and mastering to the standards used
sound, including The Secret Life Of Pets, Suicide Squad and Ghostbusters. But it’s not the only immersive audio format in town. Delegates should attend an update on the topic (‘Immersive Audio: Balancing key stakeholders’ needs’, 11 September 11:00) chaired by Julian Pinn. There’s a timely update on systems rollout and future projections plus analysis of market challenges from the European Digital Cinema Forum
(EDCF) on 11 September (15:45). Mark Stephen, sales director, Unique Digital; Rich Welsh, CEO, Sundog Media Toolkit, and EDCF CEO David Monk present. All of these sessions are free for all to attend and take place on the IBC Big Screen which is freshly outfitted with a projection system capable of showing HDR as well as 3D and 4K content and Dolby Atmos audio. There’s no excuse not to immerse yourself in the future of cinema.

Technology in Action By Adrian Pennington Sometimes the whirlwind of information unleashed on the Exhibition floor can be overwhelming when what you really need is a chance to learn more about a technology, a trend or a business case in context. That’s what the IBC Technology in Action Theatre is all about. This Feature Area in Hall 3 is home to a daily revolving programme of case studies and panel sessions which allow visitors to take a deeper dive into key aspects of the cloud, IP, production, post production and delivery, at their leisure. Entirely free-to-attend, these half hour long industry case studies are designed to give you the opportunity to see technology in action as it intersects all aspects of the industry. The programme begins on 9 September with a gathering of representatives from the major trade bodies who will share updates on the progress of standardisation and the challenges en route to IP. Brad Gilmer, executive director of AMWA, heads this one.
Shortly afterwards, IBM and Japan’s Kansai Telecasting Corporation discuss the implementation of a tape library for archive of 4K/8K media – a subject that will soon be taxing the minds of CTOs everywhere. ‘Interconnection First: How to navigate through disruption in the media and entertainment industry’ is the subject of Equinix’s presentation at 16:00. Equinix operates a ‘media cloud ecosystem for entertainment’ and will share the views of customers using it to develop and test new solutions. In a move to adopt distributed operations at Sky Italia the core routing infrastructure in its Sky Milan facility needed to be expanded. A few years ago this would have been done by installing a larger SDI router, but with a more futureproofed investment in mind, the broadcaster opted for a hybrid SDI-IP switching core instead. Hear how it was achived with performance results from Sky Italia CTO Massimo Bertolotti at 11.00 on 10 September. With 67 per cent of consumers now seeing breaking news stories on social media rather
than traditional broadcast TV, Cloud technology has never been more prominent in a news distribution workflow. Calkins Media explains how it is delivering breaking news content OTT at the Tech In Action Theatre, 14.00, 10 September. Ad insertion promises greater personalisation but only if ad blocking software can be thwarted. Join Brightcove and Mediaworks in the session at 11.00 to learn how server side ad insertion can do this while bringing a broadcast ad experience to online video. Shortly afterwards, at 15.00, in the Theatre visitors can get to grips with Unified Streaming software which, as Mariana Kalkanis, CEO M2A Media, explains can capture, trim, package, encrypt and deliver VOD assets from a live stream within minutes rather than hours of conventional workflows. These are just a selection of the rich pickings programmed for the Technology in Action Theatre. Don’t forget, these are all free to attend and are a great place to quiz vendors, as well as their customers, on the real value and application of solutions.

VR: from experiment to monetisation IBC Conference
Don your helmet to see what the fuss is about
By Adrian Pennington It’s still very early days for virtual reality (VR) and the breathless predictions for its disruptive impact on everything from filmed entertainment to journalism need reining in. Nonetheless, it is reasonable to expect that VR will not repeat the failure of stereo 3D. JPMorgan Securities forecasts VR to be a $13.5 billion industry by 2020 mainly comprised of hardware sales topping 89.3 million units. Sales of consumer gear will only rocket if there’s content to watch but here too production seems to be growing at an astonishing pace. IBC has made VR a conference theme reflecting its rapidly emerging impact on many points of media and entertainment. Get yourself a primer with ‘VR and AR 101: The Masterclass’ (9 September, 16:00) as Solomon Rogers, founder and CEO of Rewind, takes a practical look at VR technology and how it can be used to produce content. Broadcasters have spent the year road testing VR on everything from documentaries to talk shows with most of the development focused on live event broadcasts around music and sports. ‘From TV to VR: A journey’ (9 September, 09:30) is Alex Mahon’s personal take. The ex-CEO of Shine Group and now CEO of technical boffins The Foundry, explains how traditional TV might move into the new world of VR and special effects.
‘The Art and Technology of VR Storytelling’ (10 September, 11:45) is part of the IBC Big Screen Experience and examines the new medium from a creative standpoint asking how directors might guide a viewer through a scripted story and whether VR can be used to effectively create a cinematic experience? This will be followed by a lively discussion explaining the new cinematic vocabulary now
being experimented with. This idea of new visual and audio grammar is explored in depth in a Paper session led by Simon Gauntlett, CTO of the DTG. ‘Exploring New Ideas in VR & 360Âş Immersive Media’ (10 September, 10:45) tackles issues like how we might create an environment for live 360-video distribution and how can mixed reality AR/VR and plain vanilla 2D HD TV be broadcast?
There are those who think VR is a great way for sponsors and content owners to reach the TV-marginalised millennials. A Rising Stars session ‘Virtual Reality: The new reality’ (10 September, 15:00) features expert commentary from Alexandre Jenny, senior director of Immersive Media Solutions, GoPro and Michael Ford, a 360VR producer at Infinite Wisdom Studios. technology solution to the problem of stitching multiple images together without parrallax issues, then take a look at light field, in particular a new set of light field cameras being brought to market by Lytro. The company’s head of light field video, Jon Karafin poses the question: ‘Light Field Cameras: Technology that is indistinguishable from magic?’ (10 September, 09:30) and it’s up to you to answer.

UHD + HDR + WGC = IBC IBC Conference By Chris Forrester This year’s IBC suite of conference sessions has more than a sprinkling of panels wholly devoted to ‘next generation’ Ultra HDTV and the benefits that will flow from High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wider Colour Gamut (WCG) technologies. Hollywood’s film and TV production studios are now employing HDR in their output, and there have been plenty of test-transmissions in the past few months of HDRenabled material. Dr. Dietrich Westerkamp is an extremely well-regarded face at
IBC, and will chair this session (9 September, 10:00, Emerald Room). Emmy Award-winning Westerkamp has a lifetime’s experience in TV not least with his 30-years at Thomson/ Technicolor, and is still busy on various standards bodies. He is now MD at Hanover-based media and entertainment consultancy WeConsult. Dr. Westerkamp says HDR and WCG are both exciting developments which will have far-reaching implications for production practice, delivery chains and domestic viewing. Their imagery matches human vision more closely, producing a startlingly life-like rendition. HDR is also a powerful tool for
enhancing flexibility in news gathering and creativity in post production. In this exciting session, the world’s leading contributors to HDR technology (including experts from Dolby, Technicolor including a joint paper with Philips, and Lucien Lenzen from the German Hochschule Rhein-Main) will reveal the results of tests which have measured the subjective reality of HDR images. They will look at conversion between conventional and HDR-WCG formats, HDR for legacy displays and will propose how HDR signals can be conveyed through HEVC compression systems.
The Changing face of TV IBC Conference By Adrian Pennington Just as multichannel networks (MCNs) threatened to pull the millennial audience away from TV for good, operators have spent big to get them on board. It’s a synergy that benefits both parties and a topic covered in depth at the IBC2016 Conference. MCNs started out linking millennial content creators with video aggregation platforms, principally YouTube. Sandwiched between the content creators and the audience for YouTube channels, “uncharitably you could call them middlemen”, says Ampere Analysis research director Richard Broughton. “That model had to evolve.” ‘Is it the End of the Free Lunch or the Beginning of a New Era?’ (9 September, 15:15) reviews the journey MCNs have made in the last two years, and considers what the future looks like. Speakers include Bengu Atamer, co-founder and director, BuzzMyVideos; Brittany Bagnall, commercial director, Diagonal View; and Damon Berger, VP, business development at Fullscreen. One strategy adopted by MCNs was to

The IBC Wrap-Up IBC Conference By Chris Forrester There’s one essential shortcut to understanding what IBC2016 has discussed, and to establish what the hot topics were and how the industry is preparing for 2017, and that’s to attend the IBC Wrap-Up session (12 September, 11:30, Forum). Chairman John Ive (technologist and MD at Ive Tech Media) is perfectly able to bring out the best from his fellow expert panellists, most of whom are absolute IBC regulars. Elisabetta Romano is VP/head of TV & media at Ericsson is responsible for the TV and media solution area, covering strategy, portfolio, sales and business growth as the industry emerges into the internet era of television. Simon Fell is another hugely skilled guest. He is an ex-BBC R&D staffer, and since 2006 director of technology & innovation at the EBU. Simon Gauntlett (CTO at the Digital TV Group)
is another IBC regular and with a strong interest in VR as well as UHD. Tom Griffiths is director of broadcast & distribution technology at ITV, and leads ITV’s in-house team looking after its broadcast, transmission and content distribution services, as well as the technology developments delivered by ITV’s broadcast managed service providers. This includes air time sales, rights management, linear and non-linear content scheduling and IP streaming & VOD content delivery. Californian Tony Emerson (worldwide MD/media & cable at Microsoft) completes the line-up. A veteran of Microsoft since 2000, he was appointed industry solutions manager for media & cable in 2011 and succeeded to the MD role in 2013. He has a broad background in media/broadcasting having previously worked at KCSM-TV in California and as a founding employee of the Stanford University Television network.

work more closely with brands and ease the reliance on ads. Examples include Fullscreen’s partnership with GroupM to form Playa, which exclusively services GroupM and WPP clients. “Influencer marketing matters where the big agencies, that have historically bought lots of TV and lots of preroll ads, recognise this as a way to market and reach customers,” says Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos. In ‘Harnessing the Power of Influencers’ (10 September, 11:30) Nic Yeeles, founder and CEO at Peg, joins Ben Speas of YouTube to discuss how vloggers can benefit TV brands. A related session asks how broadcasters can best use
Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube and other social platforms to super-serve fans? ‘How to Make Friends and Engage Audiences (10 September, 17:45) features insight from Mallika Bajaj, CMO, Little Yellow Beetle & Mixilion. In a flat to declining market broadcaster operators have identified MCNs as a source of growth. MTG has control of Splay; Fullscreen is owned by AT&T; The RTL Group has invested in Divimove and BroadbandTV. In ‘Rich Creativity and Multiplatform Content’ (09 September, 12:15) Sam Barcroft, founder and CEO of MCN Barcroft and Scott Ehrlich, CEO of MCN The QYOU, share advice for producing content for multiple platforms and highlight the business models that work.
Instead of buying an MCN, some broadcasters choose to go direct to consumers. Disney is doing so with the Disney Life app. NBCU has a similar aim with Hayu. Hendrik McDermott, SVP – Branded on Demand (SVOD) – NBCU speaks about this (08 September, 10:45) in the session ‘The New Broadcasters: The rise of Internet TV networks’. So if the audience has moved,
is broadcast still the de-facto choice for a new show? Join Matt Campion, founder, Spirit Media and Charlie Palmer, managing editor of All4, at Platform Futures (09 September, 10:30) to learn more and hear from Europe’s #1 Periscoper Alex Pettitt who will show us why millions are tuning into people like him, live, every week on this blossoming new platform.

Up Periscope IBC Conference By Adrian Pennington An essential consideration for brands and content owners is ‘Where is your audience and what are they doing?’ There are serious questions to be asked about whether broadcast is still the de-facto platform of choice for a new show launch, or whether the target audience has already moved on to a new, more relevant (to them) destination? Live streaming platforms like Meercat and Periscope are two primary disruptive platforms undercutting traditional media. There’s a fantastic chance at a special conference session to hear

all about this from Europe’s number one Periscoper Alex Pettitt (9 September, 10:30, Room E102, as part of the conference stream Platform Futures). He live broadcasts at Alex.Live and will show IBC delegates why millions are tuning into people like him, live, every week on this blossoming new platform. In 10 months, on Twitter’s App he gained almost 250,000 followers and over 100 million Hearts/Likes. He’s consulted on live interactive streaming for the BBC, Sky and NBCU, on Periscope’s importance for news gathering, original programming and content creation. He also provides insight to brands and media
agencies on integrating Facebook Live and Periscope within powerful social media strategies. “Using live streaming achieves real time engagement which, for a brand, is like nothing ever achieved before,” Pettitt told the Festival of Marketing in London. The credibility of the influencers on live streaming sites is also important to provide a level of authenticity. Of the many brands that have approached Pettitt to collaborate he claimed he has said no to about 90 per cent of them because they did not fit in with his technology background.
Pettitt: Over 100 million Hearts/Likes
He said: “It should be a 50/50 split of the leg work between brands and broadcaster. The broadcaster shouldn’t work with anyone that doesn’t fit their users and equally the brand shouldn’t work with someone just because they have a high following.” Also speaking at this

Plan your trip Pucs & Sticks IBC Conference
With more than 55,000 people expected to attend IBC this year, it is wise to secure your accommodation soon if you want rooms to suit your needs. To help you get the right accommodation, IBC is working in association with the Amsterdam RAI Hotel Service. In turn, they work with the city of Amsterdam and its hoteliers on a scheme called I Amsterdam Approved which provides a guarantee of quality, reliability and affordability. The booking service has negotiated an allocation of at least 12,000 rooms in and around the city at a range of prices including hotels in the centre of Amsterdam for as little as €120 a night. Stretch your scripted budget IBC Conference
The TV industry has come a long way since a pair of ‘Rabbit Ears’ or a VHF aerial stood precariously on top of the TV set. Some consumers still buy into the separate TiVo units, while 8- and even 12-channel boxes are now commonplace. Nevertheless, the death of the set-top box has been predicted for at least a decade, but it still seems remarkably resilient even if the form factor has changed. STB premium TV platforms are evolving and are Pucs and Sticks casting a real alternative to TV apps or just another way to achieve the same thing? This IBC session ‘Pucs & Sticks: The death of the Set-Top Box?’ (8 September, 15:45, Forum) promises to find out. It will examine whether Smart TVs are the way forward with built-in Netflix or Amazon,
or whether it is set-top streaming via a Roku, Google’s Chromecast or Nexus, Vimeo, Apple, Nvidia or other gizmos that will win the day. Alice Mascia, EVP/product strategy & management at Sky Deutschland (where she looks after their TV Everywhere, on demand and online TV propositions) will take part in the discussion. She will be joined by Craig Buckland, business development lead/media & broadcast at Vodafone, and Steve Shannon, GM/SVP content & services at Roku.

By Chris Forrester There isn’t a production executive on the planet who doesn’t need to stretch a budget. From formats to production efficiencies, and from high volume soaps to mini-series, how does the rest of the world compete with US budgets to deliver high-end drama quality? This IBC Conference session presents an expert group of panellist to supply some hard-won experiences and even – perhaps – some short cuts to make those production budgets stretch and deliver extra value for money. Emma Turner chairs the session ‘Maximising the Impact of Local Scripted Content in an Expanding Global Market’ (9 September, 11:30, Room G102/3). Turner is hugely qualified having worked both in-house and as a consultant to projects such as UK productions New Tricks, Holby City, Hollyoaks and EastEnders. He is now co-responsible for the development of new drama shows for Endemol Shine Netherlands. Award-winning Markia Makaroff from Finland is another expert panellist. She has produced and created content with extensive
experience in both light entertainment and drama productions. She has been the executive producer for the most successful daily drama in Finland Secret Lives for several years and has also produced international drama. Sara Johnson completes the quartet. She is exec-producer and head of co-productions at Keshet UK, and among other responsibilities looks after its The A Word (a coproduction with Fifty Fathoms for the BBC) and the recently commissioned comedy-drama Loaded which Keshet UK is co-producing with Hill Billy Television for Channel 4.
IBC conference delegates with an interest in Ultra HD had better not miss Stephan Heimbecher’s opening day all-encompassing ‘UHDTV Launches Across the World’ session (8 September, Emerald Room, 10:45). Heimbecher is director/ innovations & standards at Sky Deutschland and represents Sky on national and international committees including technical work with Hollywood. He is co-chair of the FAME (Forum for Advanced Media in Europe) working group, and is on the DVB’s steering board. He has been instrumental in carrying out increasingly demanding UHD tests, more recently for High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology. This summer he will be leading the team trialling a beach volleyball tournament in HDR, followed by the German Supercup in August
which it is planned to broadcast live, and with HDR. He will be able to report to IBC delegates on these tests, and with his panellists bring attendees up-to-date on some major UHD launch activity around the world. Presentations are expected form BT Sport, Vatican City TV on the first worldwide live 4K pictures with HDR (and hybrid log gamma), Sony will report on ‘Real-world Live 4K UHD Broadcasting with HDR’, while Japan’s NHK will update delegates on their 8K/4K transmissions due on 1 August.

Jorge Espinel of Spotify on the personalised content experience
What have Ford, Starbucks and MTV got in common? Spotify has struck partnerships with all of them with the aim of extending the reach of the music streaming service. And driving each deal is Jorge Espinel, previously the head of 21st Century Fox and News Corp’s digital strategy, who joined Spotify in 2014 as head of global business development. Revamping storage options IP enables better storytelling Avid By Carolyn Giardina Avid recently revamped its storage line with the introduction of Nexis, a software-defined storage platform specifically designed for storing and managing media, which enables fully virtualised storage so media organisations can adjust storage capacity mid-project, without disrupting workflows. The system, which relies on the Avid MediaCentral platform, will be featured at IBC. It can be used with Avid-based and third-party workflows, both for
small and large projects. Another key demo on the Avid stand will be its Avid Spark telestrator, a fast-turnaround live sports enhancement tool that lets on-air commentators draw and add graphics to video content in real time. Its touchscreen interface allows users to draw graphics in both onscreen and in-field perspectives. Visitors can also examine the latest version of Avid PlayMaker, designed to speed up slow-motion replay and media highlights editing. The new version provides more streamlined collaboration with Nexis storage.
And when used with Media Director, exported clips and consolidated playlists can be automatically checked into Interplay Production while maintaining keyword metadata tagging. Also highlighted will be Avid’s 4Designer graphics authoring software, and a new version of its Maestro on-air graphics tool. New features of the latter include the Maestro Media Engine, which supports video ingest and playout, native user rights management, graphics templates and tools for repurposing of graphic content. 7.J20

Live tool: C-Next gives remote teams the ability to share content over IP
EVS
By Mark Hallinger The EVS stand at IBC will essentially be an IP-enabled hub, allowing live media flows that could connect live sports venues, broadcast centre control rooms and consumers. Introduced this summer at high-profile international flagship sporting events, C-Next is a new live connected tool that reflects the capabilities of the IP4Live strategic initiative from EVS. This contribution network platform gives remote teams
the ability to share files and metadata content over IP, from any OB truck, broadcast centre or production HQ. EVS is also demonstrating its new-generation IPWeb – a remote access application that lets users browse and select content no matter where they are – and the IT/ software-based, fully scalable architecture of its IP-based DYVI production switcher. DYVI is being shown in full 4K/UHD mode, which EVS claimed enables more creative and productive program assembly based on a pooled resources model. 8.B90

Streamlining broadcast workflows Thoroughly modern mixing IHSE
By Carolyn Giardina Several new products from IHSE are aimed at continuing to aid broadcast facilities and post production studios in streamlining broadcast workflow. According to the company, its KVM technology is being absorbed increasingly into the broadcast process as users take advantage of “secure remote access to source, editing and content control devices; by transmitting instant
and latency-free images and providing unrestricted access to control devices from any workstation.”
IHSE’s largest KVM switch, the 576 port Draco tera enterprise
On show this year will be a new version of the Java-based Tera tool, with new features to optimise administrator control, and overview of an installed KVM switch featuring live preview images, extended drag and drop switching and configurable layouts. IHSE will also show a range of new SDI and USB extenders. Each is designed to ease the problems associated with long distance transmission of imagery and high-speed data. It will also display a new hot-standby controller board for the Draco tera enterprise switch range. 7.B30
Partner programme launched Media Links By Ian McMurray Support for pre-sales activity, including assistance with resources, provision of demonstration equipment, marketing, technical and project management expertise, is at the heart of the partner programme being launched by Media Links at IBC. John Smith, managing director, Media Links EMEA, said, “Media Links has a proven track record supporting major global events like the Olympic Games and the World Cup; we serve high-profile media and broadcast clients like NBC and Turner, and we are also a key supplier
for global communications networks like Telstra. “Last year, as part of Media Links’ continued expansion program, we opened our first wholly owned division in the EMEA region, based in the UK. To capitalise on the growing market for moving content over IP within the live broadcast environment, we are now looking for long-term strategic partners to address the diverse range of channels, languages and territories available. “We have all seen trading agreements that favour one side or the other,” continued Smith. “However, true partnership agreements have to understand and meet the needs of everyone in the chain.
Storage set for digital creativity Toshiba By Carolyn Giardina Toshiba will show products ranging from Flash memory cards (SD cards, USB sticks, embedded and raw NAND Flash Memory based components) for capturing and distributing digital content to a wide lineup of Solid State Drives (SSDs) optimised for movie and still picture

rendering and post production. Cost-optimised datacentretype SSDs with large capacities and temporary storage and broadcast/streaming systems of all scale will also be shown together with mobile Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), SSDs for portable equipment and large capacity HDDs. “These can store any amount of digital media content in a most cost-effective way,” the
Lawo By Mark Hallinger For the first time in Europe, Lawo is showing its new 9̜3(@ Virtual Radio Mixer. 9̜3(@ is a softwaredefined radio mixer, which means a user can easily add to its capabilities. Plug-ins are available for features such as voice processing, declipping, IP remotes and more. Michael Dosch, director of virtual radio products, Lawo, said: “When we introduced the idea of virtualised radio to broadcasters, they understood the benefits immediately” Dosch claimed that broadcasters can now run the equivalent of an entire radio
studio’s worth of equipment on a laptop, including mixing, voice processing, codecs, phone systems and more. He said this software approach reduced the price of obtaining all these tools to a fraction of that of their hardware counterparts. Mixing and additional tools are all controlled within a multi-touch onscreen GUI. Thanks to technology adapted from the IT industry, Lawo says 9̜3(@ is highly portable and space-efficient and thus perfect for graband-go remote kits, field journalists, fast setup of onlocation studios, webcasting, and as a replacement for ageing studio hardware. 8.B50
Therefore, we have carefully designed a partner programme to deliver a clear range of benefits to partners and their clients.” 1.C31

company said. The range includes models aimed at uses that might involve video surveillance data, still pictures or movie archives. Toshiba’s stand will include a system with SAS SSD of 4GB/s bandwidth and 16TB+ capacity in a small desktop PC form factor – quiet, low power operation, which could accommodate 4K-raw content postproduction in an office or studio environment. 6.C23
As well as celebrating its 15th anniversary, Tedial will be at IBC to showcase its Version Factory product that won the IABM Game Changer Award in the System Automation and Control category earlier this year. Version Factory is described by the company as a true media factory workflow that can be managed from a single operator screen. Tedial further claimed it to offer a single efficient and cost-effective workflow that
supports millions of file input-tooutput configurations. It is designed to interface with content management, rights management, traffic and work order systems for automated operations, and it stacks chosen media engines (transcoders, quality control, DRM, CDN and others). It employs SMPTE standardised designs for future proofed ‘N-input to N-output’ operations and provides flexibility and scalability for OTT/VOD platforms, network operations and media companies. 8.B41

Re-imagining media production Sony By Adrian Pennington Further building on its ‘Beyond Definition’ vision and heritage at IBC, Sony will highlight how it is backing organisations across the broadcast landscape to ‘re-imagine’ their approach to media production. “While the potential for improving audience experiences is expanding rapidly, so too are the challenges faced by broadcasters and vendors alike,” said Michael Harrit, marketing director, Sony Europe. “As an overall industry, we’re shifting towards workflows that combine insight and business efficiency alongside creative technologies, which is why a solutions approach needs to be adopted. With this in mind, our customers look to us to act as their technology innovator, solutions provider and business partner.”
Taking up its regular position in the Elicium building, Sony will be introducing European audiences to the HDC-4800 system camera and sharing details of the IP Live Studio it recently opened at Pinewood. A key focus, Sony said, will be on how the company is working with partners and competitors to deliver solutions that suit the ‘real world’ practicalities of modern broadcasting. “This is why IBC is an exciting time for us: it brings customers and the industry
together to explore what could be achieved,” continued Harrit. “Take IP in live production, for example: we’ve moved from a phase of discussion and exploration into delivering interoperable IP technologies based on an open standards approach. We’re also looking forward to showcasing our Media Backbone Hive solution, and the latest enhancements and business benefits from the rest of the Media Operations Management range.” 13.A10
RF fault detection showcased Agama Technologies By Ian McMurray Agama Technologies is presenting its monitoring and analytics solution for multiplatform and multiscreen environments. Among the products on show is the new cable RF fault detection and visualisation functionality, based on the Agama SCALE architecture, which is designed to pinpoint where in the RF access network problems have occurred and what the customer impact is. Bots, vloggers & influencers: TV is changing IBC Conference By Chris Forrester
Step into the Future Zone
By Adrian Pennington IBC has a strong track record in spotlighting ideas at birth that may revolutionise media. NHK’s Super Hi-Vision 8K system is one prime example, first shown at IBC2010. Virtual reality was still an experiment when IBC first showcased VR displays and cameras but the fact that content and headsets are fixtures on the IBC2016 show floor illustrates just how rapidly technology is advancing. The only way to get ahead of the curve is to step into the IBC Future Zone, a portal to the next leaps in audio visual innovation.
Home to exhibitors with cutting edge projects and prototypes liberated by IBC from the world’s broadcaster and academic research and development labs. Exhibitors include regular Future Zone explorers BBC R&D, TIE Kinetix, Swissaudec and ETRI along with TrueDR, Sphericam, Aragon Design and the intruigingly named Minglvision. The IBC Future Zone is also home to the Posters, the highly respected, rigorously peer-reviewed ideas chosen by the IBC Technical Papers Committee for their relevance
to the subjects of IBC’s Conference Programme and their ability to startle your imagination. This year’s ‘poster’ presentations will be upgraded to large-screen interactive displays. This should greatly enhance the presentation of novel ideas and improve the communication between presenters and visitors. It’s worth noting that demand for the opportunity to present on these screens has been significantly over-subscribed. Make sure you locate the Future Zone, outside Hall 8, and see the future before it’s ready.
IPTV in view for sports and enterprise Vitec By Carolyn Giardina Vitec is demonstrating the latest updates to its IPTV Sports Venue Solution, designed to allow users at stadiums or arenas to stream high-quality live, on-demand, or recorded video over existing IP infrastructure. The company claimed this potentially creates a sponsorship inventory by turning every display into a digital asset. Based on Vitec’s EZ TV platform, the IPTV Sports Venue system offers low latency across displays, synchronised playback,

IBC’s suite of conference sessions, like TV itself, is constantly changing to reflect the dynamic transformations the industry is going through. Hence a number of new ‘streams’ for IBC2016. ‘Audiences & Advertising’ is one result, and has drawn expert speakers from Google, Sky Media, GroupM, Red Bee and others to examine crucial topics such as Video Advertising Technology, AdBlockers on the Internet, The Changing Face of TV Consumption, Harnessing the Power of Influencers, Audience Measurement in a World of Catch-up, and the fascinating Spend, Spend, Spend: Where the Ad-Money is Going. All of the Audiences & Advertising sessions take place in IBC’s Forum, starting on Friday 9 September at 15:30 with ‘Ad-blockers, Bots and Fraud’, which asks whether internet advertising can be fixed. Mark Howe (MD/EMEA Agencies at Google) joins Chris LeMay (SVP/MD Europe at DataXu) and Graham Wylie (senior director-market development at AppNexus. The following session (at 16:30) looks at ‘New Developments in TV and Video Advertising Technology’ and brings together Jamie West (deputy MD at Sky Media) and Alexander Bastin (VP/Play Scandinavia at
MTGx). They will review the exciting new developments in TV and video advertising – on and off the big screen. The stream continues on Saturday with a full day of Forum sessions, kicking off at 09:45 with the BBC’s David Bunker (head of audiences) and GfK’s Niko Waesche (global industry head, media & entertainment) and focusing on what is really happening to TV consumption. Bravely, the panel will ask the $64,000 question: ‘Is Linear TV Really Dead?’. The follow-on session (at 11:30) examines ‘The Power of Influencers, and how Vloggers can Benefit your Brands’. Later sessions include ‘Can Audience Measurement Catch Up to Catch Up’ (13:30) with Simon Thomas (global director – audience research at creative agency GroupM) and Tom Weiss (CEO at Genius Digital) discussing how the world is handling audience measurement in an increasingly complex TV environment. At 16:45 the Forum hosts GroupM’s Adam Smith (futures director) and Nikki Mendonca (president/EMEA at marketing communications giant OMD). ‘Spend, Spend, Spend: Where the Ad-Money is Going’ includes a fascinating ‘pitch session’ where five new ad products are pitched to a panel of agencies and advertisers who decide where to invest their client’s ad budgets.

Duo offers more capacity IDX Technology By David Fox Users of cameras needing longer run times or with high current needs could be catered for by the recently introduced Duo-C190 compact high-capacity, high-load battery. It weighs about 1kg, which is light for a battery with a capacity of 185Wh. It supports a continuous load of 11A/120W, which is suitable for cameras with demanding power requirements or for users of larger LED lights. It includes a new D-Tap advanced socket, which not only offers conventional

output and a USB power output with a current rating of 2.3A rather than the 1.0A of earlier Endura Duo batteries. IDX has worked with Panasonic Sanyo (which supplies the Lithium ion cells) on the design of the battery protection circuitry, and the Duo Compact meets stringent PSE safety regulations. Currently Japanese-specific but likely to be adopted worldwide, the regulations demand that individual Lithium ion cells are isolated from each other within the battery in a honeycomblike structure. 12.C25

More powerful recording monitors Sound Devices/ Video Devices By Mark Hallinger New recording capabilities for the PIX-E Series of 4K-compatible recording monitors will make their international debut at IBC. Video Devices, a brand of video products developed by Sound Devices, said that its PIX-E Series of monitors now feature an H.264 codec, with the capability for simultaneously recording an edit-ready Apple ProRes file and a more compact H.264 MP4 file. These new
features are available as a free download for PIX-E owners, said the company. With the addition of H.264, an applied LUT is baked into the H.264 .mp4 file and saved via SD card. The master ProRes 4K file is saved to the Video Devices’ SpeedDrive without an applied LUT. This would be ideal for users who want to simultaneously record a full dynamic range, log-encoded ProRes master file for the edit suite and a REC709 H.264 file suitable for client viewing, said the company. 8.B59

Technicolor
By Adrian Pennington Technicolor’s IBC presence will be all about how creative, scientific and technological talent are working together productively to build a bright future for virtual and enhanced experiences. As a creative technology company, it says it understands the power of partnerships between scientists, engineers and technicians with artists. That was the purpose when the company worked on The Wizard of Oz in 1939, and it remains the mission today with contributions to projects
such Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. Beyond theatrical releases, however, Technicolor has also amassed an impressive body of work in immersive media. The company and its subsidiaries have not only created VR experiences to accompany Hollywood productions like The Martian, but they have also harnessed artistic and technological VR talent to elevate consumer engagement with brands. “There is still a tremendous amount of work ahead,” stated the company. “This is as true for creators of virtual or augmented content, who struggle with the rudimentary tools and immature workflow conventions, as it is for the
service providers that will have to pump unprecedented volumes of multimedia data through their infrastructures. “Beyond technology we are also just now beginning to understand the creative opportunities associated with putting audiences ‘inside’ an experience, not just ‘in front’ of a show. Artists are experimenting with the new canvas offered by immersive media technologies to determine how they can engage audiences and strike the intense emotional chord that will be critical to making this emerging form of entertainment a mainstream activity that is broadly embraced by consumers.” 15.MS5

The brand-new member of the JOYmechanix product family, Manta Ray, is to be showcased for the first time ever, at this year’s show. Manta Ray is a winch-free cord-flying 3D camera system. The company has claimed it to be the first easily portable system of this type on the market. Manta Ray is aimed at all areas of filming, focusing on both user convenience and
professional quality, said the company. JOYmechanix, entering its third year exhibiting at the show, is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of innovative equipment for television. Its product line covers 3D, 2D and 1D robotic camera motion systems on cords and gyro stabilised three-axis pan-tilt heads. All its equipment is based on the plug and play ideology, which it said makes for convenience in mounting, operation and maintenance. 11.A06

Summary The IBC Daily Executive Summary is now a firmly established addition to the Preview and five live show editions of The IBC Daily. Corporate advertising in this year’s Executive Summary gives you exposure to the most senior and influential broadcast and media professionals post IBC. The Executive Summary Issue reflects and continues the thought leadership generated at IBC. We will interview some of the world’s most influential media business thinkers and publish that insightful content in both digital and print formats in 2016. This issue will provide a unique vehicle that captures the most innovative and provocative discussions from the international ‘brain trust’ gathering in Amsterdam in early September. This will be sent out to all VIPs from the IBC Leaders’ Summit in an exclusive preview mailing before being sent to 5,000 further hand-picked VIPs from the 2016 visitor database. It will also be sent as a digital magazine to all our IBC attendees post show.
