ack in the days when the UK’s newspaper industry was still based in Fleet Street, certain journalists had tried and tested ways of bunking off for a while. They would leave their jackets on their chairs and slope off to the nearest pub – but not before giving a junior staff member a packet of cigarettes, with instructions to keep a fag burning in the ashtray on their desk during their absence. That way, the pretence that they were just away from their typewriter for a moment could be maintained for... well, for as long as they wanted, I guess. Those days are long gone – in so many ways – but I was reminded of them last month when I read of an unsuccessful attempt by The Daily Telegraph to install presence monitoring equipment at workstations. Staff turned up for work one day to find a box of electronics mounted under each desk. These, it turned out, were OccupEye devices that use motion and heat sensors to register

‘People are likely to fear the worst when they have new technology imposed on them without explanation’ when a desk is being used. Staff were unhappy with the idea that they were being monitored, the issue was escalated via the union and the devices were soon removed. Management insisted that the purpose of the boxes had been to gather information about desk usage over a four-week period with a view to optimising energy consumption throughout the building, rather than tracking individual productivity. A look at the manufacturer’s website suggested that the main purpose of the devices is to track patterns of usage so that building managers can make the best use of expensive working space. Interestingly, though, the company added a statement a few days later in response to what happened at the Telegraph, pointing out other potential uses for its product, including providing intelligence on the most frequented areas in a building, directing people to vacant meeting spaces and, yes, helping to save energy. It’s interesting that both the Telegraph and the manufacturer found themselves explaining the purpose of the technology after the fact. It serves as a salutary reminder that people are likely to fear the worst when they have new technology imposed on them without explanation. Also, people generally won’t accept what they perceive as unilateral interference in, or observation of, their daily routines. However, Facebook and other social media have demonstrated that many people are happy to give up elements of privacy if they feel they are getting something in return, and – crucially – they are able to control how far and how fast they go down this road. As smart building technology becomes more established, we should remember the importance of getting buy-in and co-operation from the people that these buildings are supposed to be serving.

The future of digital signage

By Steve Montgomery

I

n retail, the Three Ps – product, price and promotion – are no longer the fundamentals of success. Priorities are changing as the enabling power of digital place-based media provides better merchandising, branding and ambience. Across the most public-interaction sectors, digital signage is delivering higher revenue per person within available space than ever before. Banking, hospitality, healthcare and entertainment venues are finding that digital signage improves revenues and profits. In the future, integration of digital signage into the retail environment will show a dramatic level of change, supported by improved priceperformance of technologies and the application of customer behaviour insights. “Visual is the new retail language; millenials, digital natives and progressive adults expect modern, innovative communication approaches,” said Lyle Bunn, analyst, adviser and educator. “Organisations not using digital signage are perceived as old and dated. The opportunity cost of not using digital signage now exceeds the cost of using it to improve productivity of place.”

Consumer drone shipments to reach $4.6 billion by 2025

By Duncan Proctor

A

ccording to research findings conducted for ABI Research’s Consumer Robotics Service, an estimated 90 million consumer UAVs will ship during 2025, up from 4.9 million in 2014 with a CAGR of 30.4% over the same period. The predicted revenues from consumer drones in 2025 are forecast to reach $4.6 billion, with both the toy/ hobbyist and prosumer UAV sectors exhibiting strong growth. Findings reveal toy/hobbyist drone shipments accounted for 30% of consumer UAV revenue in 2014, while the prosumer sector was behind 69% of revenue. However, ABI Research predicts toy/hobbyist UAV revenue will surpass prosumer UAV revenue by 2017, and will account for more than two-thirds of the $4.6 billion consumer drone market in 2025. “For the study period, the overwhelming majority of consumer UAVs shipped will be toy/ hobbyist UAVs, followed by prosumer UAVs, while kits and custom UAVs will remain a small market,” said Phil Solis, research director at ABI

06 Install188 Analysis_Final.indd 1

Research. “Overall, growth in the consumer drone sector will remain strong, spurred by the creation of new use cases and the adoption of the technological advancements generated by wellfunded market leaders such as DJI, 3DR, Parrot and Yuneec, among others.” Additionally, the report found that consumer UAVs with at least one camera can expect higher shipments than those without cameras from 2019 onwards as the complexity of technology in the toy/hobbyist sector continues to increase. “It will be interesting to watch what happens as consumer UAV technology continues to evolve,” concluded Solis. “The future challenge will lie in finding ways to keep the products interesting. By transforming consumer UAVs into flying smartphone-like platforms, product vendors will be able to add innovative technological functionality into the devices with an eye on more open application development to enable innovative use cases. This will enable products to hold consumers’ interest longer, increase product value, and expand product lifespan.”

Demand for larger sets boosting flatpanel market By Steve Montgomery

T

he good news for the flatpanel industry is that for all the discussion about the end of TV, there is still a relatively high number of consumers planning to buy a new TV in the next 12 months. The two biggest factors contributing to this desire are screen size and picture quality. “People are finding space in their home for 70in TV sets, and the super-jumbo size category is growing aggressively,” said Steve Koenig, Consumer Technology Association, senior director, market research. “By the end of the decade, 10% of TV sets will be 65in or larger. That desire for larger sets will be a global trend. “The industry will pivot and point to OLED as the upgrade path,” he explained. “However that will be more of a next-decade story as the yields on OLED are still not effective at larger screen sizes and very few manufacturers have been willing to invest too much.” In the meantime, LCD technology will continue to dominate, and it will probably not be until 2030 that OLED could possibly push LCD out of the market the way LCD pushed plasma out.”

Windows and Chrome compete for global education market share By Duncan Proctor

A

recent report from Futuresource Consulting has found that Microsoft and its Windows Operating System (OS) is poised to fight back against the growing adoption of Google Chrome in the worldwide primary and secondary school PC/tablet market in 2016. The past few years has seen Google make rapid gains in the US market with its Chrome OS (via Chromebooks) coming at the expense of both Microsoft and Apple. In Q3 of 2015 Chromebooks passed 50% of primary and secondary school sales for the first time (51% of US Q3 2015 K-12 sales) with 1.63 million units sold of the total market. Outside of the US market however, Chrome is growing at a much slower rate (3% share of Rest of World in Q3 2015). Many countries globally and especially the major emerging markets such as Brazil, Mexico and India, do not have the connectivity required to run a cloud-based infrastructure and although Chrome adoption is developing steadily in Western European markets, it is not at the same rate of growth as in the US. In addition, Microsoft has won projects in

08 Install188 Analysis_Final.indd 1

emerging school markets, such as a 960,000 unit national deal in Mexico and an 11,000unit deal with the Microsoft Surface in the UAE as part of the Bin Rashid Smart Learning Program. One of the main reasons for Chromebooks success in the school market in the US has

been the price point ($200-230). However, Microsoft and its OEM partners are looking to target the sub $300 price point with a wide range of Windows notebook devices.

SPAIN

We get opinions from across the country’s installation market to find out levels of confidence and the sectors of growth to look out for in the next 12 months

S

ince the global financial crisis, the Spanish economy has been slow to recover, resulting in over a quarter of Spain’s workforce unemployed by 2012. However, Spain reduced imports and increased exports while maintaining strong tourist numbers, which led to the country achieving a trade surplus in 2013 for the first time in three decades. Across the country’s installation market, confidence is growing, with the majority of

3.4%

respondents claiming higher confidence now than six months ago, and the vast majority believing their company’s revenue will grow by more than 5%. Corporate, retail and digital signage are the vertical markets showing the clearest signs of growth, whereas sports venues and worship are either showing no change or may even be set to shrink. When providing answers on what causes the most concern with regard to their own businesses, most of the manufacturers and distributors were concerned with clients going for lowest price rather than best value, whereas integrators were more focused on cashflow issues. Advice given to manufacturers looking to enter the Spanish market came from another

10 Install188 Regional Voices_Final.indd 1

manufacturer, Juan Antonio Casado, CEO of PosterDigital, who said: “Search for partners that give you value.” AV/IT came up in a number of responses offering advice to integrators looking to enter the market. However, there was a word of warning from Oscar Valero of distributors GAPLASA. He stated: “At this moment, there are a lot of integrators working in Spain, so I think this is not a good moment to enter, unless they are specialised in something very unique.” Lastly, respondents commented on what they would change about the way the installation market works in Spain. One distributor lamented the lack of AV consultants in Spain. “We miss the role of the AV consultant, as this it is usually done

by the distributors and manufacturers.” Casado of PosterDigital added: “The installation market in Spain comes from before the internet and IoT explosion, and not many of the companies can manage mixed projects.” Overall, confidence is returning to the market as a whole, and there also seems an appetite for the country to embrace innovations such as AV/IT convergence and the IoT.

14 OPINION: ON THE AGENDA

February 2016

Rob Lane

The Integration of Everything ISE is the ultimate unifying playing field

W

ith ISE almost upon us, it’s a good opportunity to speculate on what pro-AV technology and solutions we’re likely to see at the now fourday event, and to reflect upon how much of what’s exhibited is informed by industry demand and expectation. Installation publisher NewBay Media runs its Best of Show Awards programme at every ISE, recognising new and outstanding products exhibited, but while I’m at the show I’ll be looking at the bigger picture too: how exhibition stands are representative of what’s going on in the industry for the other 360 or so days of the year. Last month I discussed how evolutions in retail are influencing digital signage, with LED growing in popularity (including curved displays), 4K becoming ubiquitous, more sophisticated kiosks, larger media walls, touch technology, zero-bezel weather, vandal-protected touch monitors and SoC making more of an impact. And with visual technology tending to dominate at ISE, I expect a raft of display-heavy exhibits to excite retail integrators – along with mounting solutions intended to solve many of the issues surrounding the retail revolution (larger, heavier screens; transparent displays, etc), from the likes of Unicol and Peerless. Projection will also feature heavily in Amsterdam. New 20,000-hour laser projection lifespans and excellent colour reproduction are allowing retailers and others to benefit anew from projection’s advantages, including larger images sizes and access to in-store areas, which may not be appropriate to displays. Experiential opportunities including pixel mapping, edge blending, geometric projection techniques and

14 Install188 Opinion 1_Final.indd 1

floor advertising are set to tempt end users and installers – and not just in the retail space. VR and its close sibling AR are sure to have a bigger part to play in the coming months and years, especially as Oculus Rift developers come up with new uses, and perhaps more so when Microsoft’s HoloLens finally drops – particularly as it brings VR and AR together in such an exciting way. Don’t be surprised to see VR goggles everywhere at the RAI this year – event and retail integrators in particular should take note.

Virtual clothing We might also expect to see one or two ‘virtual changing room’ solutions, employing VR to virtually clothe shoppers, perhaps with gesture interaction to aid decision-making. In 2014, the Fashion3D solution featured at the RAI, allowing attendees to stand in front of a display that mimics a full-length mirror, while AR software overlaid their image with realistic 3D renders of clothing and other items. There’s sure to be the usual Pepper’s Ghost display boxes, from the likes of Realfiction, but the larger holographic-style, stage event solutions – such as that offered by Holo-Gauze – are much more difficult to showcase in exhibition conditions (although the company is considering exhibiting in 2017). We’re all used to seeing floor projection, and it would be a surprise if there weren’t one or two at ISE 2016, however we’re unlikely to see solutions like FogScreen Projection or indeed much in the way of projection mapping – although UK-based Projection Artworks’ retail-focused DisplayMapper is one of a few mapping technologies that would demonstrate well at show, were they exhibiting. Perhaps the main challenge for ISE exhibitors –

at least to those for whom it matters – is how to exhibit corporate AV solutions (outside of merely demonstrating the display tech; we all know how important big screens and interactive walls, for instance, have become for corporate installations). Will VC feature at the event? Well, certainly Oblong is exhibiting, so we can expect to see some sort of demonstration of the company’s Mezzanine solution. VC experts Polycom and AVI-SPL are also in attendance, so VC will feature on their stands too. Microsoft’s Surface Hub will be showcased by a distribution partner, as Microsoft hasn’t taken a stand. Some partners are exhibiting – Crestron and AVI-SPL, for example – and TD Maverick is hosting regular Surface Hub demos. Somebody who could probably predict all of the above better than me, as well as what’s set to feature at the next five ISE events, is Dr Michio Kaku – tasked with giving Friday’s keynote speech. One of the world’s leading scientific figures, with unparalleled skills in predicting trends affecting business, commerce and finance, Kaku is also a recognised expert in Einstein’s unified field theory. Sometimes called the Theory of Everything, proponents hope to bring all physics theories together in order to explain the nature and behaviour of all matter and energy. I’m sure many AV integrators would wish for something similar: a means of combining all of today’s leading technologies into one huge, compatible and interchangeable shopping basket of systems and solutions. Essentially what ISE looks to achieve every year. Rob Lane is founder/director of comms agency Bigger Boat PR Ltd and a long-time business/tech journo. He’s attended ISE since its inception.

KVM for mission-critical applications KVM matrix switches offer resilience, flexibility and interactive response

A

udiovisual installations are becoming more sophisticated and complex, needing to cope with ever-increasing video resolutions, greater data throughput and wider access requirements. At the same time, the value of content is rising; it may be commercially sensitive and need to remain within an organisation or may need to be displayed under strict branding guidelines and in a highly controlled manner. The consequent cost of losing valuable data can be enormous. However, the proliferation of networks and easier remote access to computers runs counter to security. Transmitting and copying data is now one of the simplest tasks any computer user can undertake. Video switches enable unrestricted connection between source devices and distant displays and have radically changed the structure of the AV industry. They deliver the considerable advantage of flexibility: allowing video streams to be switched to different displays. The source computers can be located in access and environmentally controlled locations, thereby maximising overall system security and easing maintenance. However, greater levels of interactivity and complex data transfer requirements mean that nowadays applications and systems must respond to user commands instantly; with no lag or inaccuracy. Or be able to send or transmit data files in either direction without fear of it failing or being accessed by unauthorised operators. Herein lies a problem: video matrix switches, based on HDBaseT (or proprietary protocols) or

16 Install188 Opinion 2_Final.indd 1

video-over-IP, adequately transmit video in the forward direction, but do not have the capacity to return large amounts of data or interactive commands that are essential in today’s highly sophisticated interactive AV systems. Enter the KVM matrix switch and extender. Not only does this class of device deliver lossless, artefact-free video with imperceptible latency, up to and including single and dual head HD and 4K resolutions, but it permits a totally reliable and instant return path with USB-HID for keyboard and mouse control and USB 2.0/3.0 for data. To the user, the computer truly appears to be alongside their workstation, even though it may actually be hundreds of metres, or even kilometres, away. For professional AV systems requiring high levels of security, robustness and flexibility, KVM switches provide an ideal solution. Signals can be controlled and user access limited. Sufficient redundancy can be built into the system design that a distribution network can deliver total and uncompromised security to any required level. All with complete bidirectional data handling and uncompromised interactive response, as well as

instant switching and pristine image clarity. KVM matrix switches include interface protocols that make them simple to connect to professional third-party control systems, such as those supplied by AMX and Crestron, allowing them to be easily and effectively integrated into larger systems. IHSE’s Draco tera KVM matrix switches and extenders feature in an extensive list of critical installations: government control centres, port management systems, ocean-going seismic research vessels, airport information systems featuring several hundred displays in videowalls, air traffic control systems, large entertainment venues – as well as broadcast centres, OB vans and editing suites. These are all applications that must continue to operate, whatever happens – and that require levels of performance and reliability that match anything in our industry. 18 INTERVIEW: CORY SCHAEFFER, QSC

February 2016

Systems control

Phil Ward talks to Cory Schaeffer, QSC’s newly appointed director of systems solutions, now that ‘Audio’ has been excised from the company name so that it can evolve beyond specified restrictions on technology On joining, what experience do you bring to bear on the priorities at QSC right now? My experience is perfectly aligned with helping QSC in its Systems division, and the company is perfectly aligned to help me grow: I know corporate AV particularly well, and that’s where QSC is heading. What are those priorities? To get the industry to overcome the perception that QSC is exclusively an audio company. We serve three business units: Live Sound, which includes touring and installed sound and especially amplifiers; Cinema; and my unit, Systems. It’s a completely new departure into

18-19 Install188 Interview_Final.indd 1

corporate AV: we’re taking the power of Q-SYS into boardrooms, meeting room audio and control. Moving from Listen Technologies, which you co-founded, there was a bridge from ‘traditional’ AV in a specialist sector to mainstream pro audio – briefly with Harman and now at QSC. Is AV ready for better audio? Sadly, audio is all too often an afterthought because users take it for granted while focusing on video and displays. Then, typically, what goes wrong at meetings is the audio – at which point there is no meeting. Too often ‘good enough’ is accepted without much thought

to how our room sounds at the far end. We’ve all been in remote meetings where we have difficulty hearing someone in the room because they’re on a ‘star phone’ and not close enough to the microphones. Time is currency, and if a meeting is worth having it’s worth having it be as productive as it can be. This will include the need to improve the audio experience: so much of meeting content is in the audio. At QSC it’s our goal to provide products so good, that exhibit so much quality all round, that the user will ‘wear it well’ – be proud of their choice and build a lasting relationship with our brand. We want them to know and experience the quality, and naturally that includes audio.

A brief biography n Cory Schaeffer co-founded Listen Technologies in 1998. In 2014 she moved from vice president of worldwide sales to vice president of business development n In 2015 she spent four months as a VP of sales in Harman’s corporate, education and government business unit before joining QSC n Schaeffer has been a board member and member of the board of directors at InfoComm and has received an InfoComm Women in AV award and an NSCA Movers and Shakers accolade What prompted the move from a business you built up from scratch to a multinational corporation, and then from Harman to QSC? As a co-founder of Listen Tech, I’m proud of what I was able to build there and Listen is carrying on successfully without me. I began to have discussions with Rashid Skaf, the former CEO and president of AMX, about joining AMX. These discussions started over a year ago – this got me thinking about ‘what’s next for me’ – and this process allowed me to begin thinking about life after Listen Tech. I then met with my partner and stated that it was time for me to leave Listen Tech as I was seeking new challenges to learn and grow. I joined AMX by Harman in early July 2015 and, by the end of July, Rashid had resigned and Harman began to go into a reorganisation – all of which I believe in and supported. I think their direction is a good one for them; I just wasn’t a good fit. No right, no wrong: just not a good fit. In realising this, I made the decision that I wanted to be in an organisation that was much larger than Listen Tech, however one where I could still be entrepreneurial and where the culture and I were better aligned. So I called Joe Pham, the CEO of QSC, in an effort to get to know him and the QSC organisation better. The more I learned, the more I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. QSC introduced some disruptive technology at the InfoComm show and is entering the corporate AV space with an amazing product roadmap, so it’s a great time to join. QSC is special – it’s unique for being as large as it is – and it still holds a small-company type of culture with a talented group of people and a structure that is unlike anything I’ve seen. I’m working with an amazing group of people. I have many new technologies and methods to learn from a group of fantastic people. It’s a great match for me, and it’s just what I was looking for. What trends are you seeing in the corporate AV sector? One of the biggest that we have to address is Bring Your Own Device [BYOD]. It’s one of the

18-19 Install188 Interview_Final.indd 2

INTERVIEW: CORY SCHAEFFER, QSC evolutions of the workplace that you’ll see reflected in our output. End users also want to manage and monitor systems globally, so beyond the LAN. How will QSC’s technology adapt to those and other developments? QSC introduced the Q-SYS Core 110f at InfoComm, which is a full line up of network products that are built on Intel-based technologies and a Linux real-time operating system. Our system delivers a seamless collaboration experience in boardrooms, conference rooms and other corporate spaces. With this system we offer the Core 110f table or wall-mounted control panels and of course QSC amplifiers and speakers. The Core 110f is designed to deliver seamless networking integration, making it easy to manage and monitor the systems.

‘QSC is special – it’s unique for being as large as it is – and it still holds a smallcompany type of culture with a talented group of people and a structure that is unlike anything I’ve seen’

It’s also AES67-ready to provide interoperability with a growing list of thirdparty network audio products and will support this standard. We’re taking a full systems approach to the market with rigorous testing and measurements, saving valuable set up time. We also have a full line up of speakers for these environments, including shallow-can ceiling speakers when ceiling space is tight. Yes, we are known for exceptional audio quality and audio is key to having productive and collaborative meetings, yet it’s often given the least amount of time and attention – until there are audio issues. QSC is leading the industry in educating this sector. The roadmap and vision at QSC is extremely exciting and progressive. In fact, we just recently changed the name legally from QSC Audio to QSC. QSC is removing the limits of specific technology segments so that we can take full advantage of the many opportunities we see before us. Are there specific support platforms, such as for Dante or the Open Control Alliance? People often ask us about Dante, and we absolutely do have an interface for that. We’re not just trying to create our own ecosystem, however wonderful an exclusive world of QSC would be! We do see that we have to be a part

19

of this world of integration, so as we roll into this new arena of corporate AV everything from QSC will play well with other solutions. We will be compatible, not least because potential customers of ours may well have begun some kind of standardisation on something else and we want to make it easy for them to do business with QSC. However, we are not a part of OCA as we are firmly behind progressive platforms that support command and control scripting engines – Python and Lua are examples of these. We’re not constrained by trying to encapsulate every OCA command structure, and we do have the ability to command and control anything including OCA and IT devices. This gives us the ability to say ‘yes’ to controlling anything. Presumably that takes you beyond corporate AV into other installation sectors too? For sure: because of other features of Q-SYS apart from those optimised for corporate meeting rooms and so on, and especially with our amplification and loudspeaker expertise, I’m looking for opportunities in hospitality, in transportation, in retail… QSC is already in many of those, but one of my responsibilities is to accelerate that diversification. Having been acknowledged as a leading businesswoman, do you have any views on how pro audio/installation needs to break the ‘glass ceiling’ in the boardroom? Our industry continues to be male dominated – however, we are making progress. I first became involved with the issue of women in our industry when I was invited to be on a panel for Women In Audio at an AES show, early in my career. It was a gift to be included and made aware of a responsibility that I had to help other women. Later I was a founding board member for Women in AV and I’m also involved with Women of InfoComm. Groups like these support, uplift and help women in their careers, offering a setting where we are comfortable seeking out support. Many men and women have helped and supported me over the years – this is what I love about our industry. So many people are willing and wanting to help, with no hidden agendas. I feel as if I’m the luckiest woman on the planet to not only be in this industry, but to have had all the opportunities and experiences I’ve had from the generosity and help of others. My path has led me to QSC and I’m looking forward to this challenge. I have the opportunity to learn and grow from like-minded, passionate people and from some of the most brilliant minds in our industry.

the new touchscreen microphone is compatible with established VIGIL2 systems, providing users with the option to swap out current microphones. Features of the unit include the facility to record and play back messages at any given time. It also has a local music input and the ability to access various logs including history and faults using the touchscreen. There is also the facility to have a hardwire bypass for use in the event of a system failure.

AUDIO The Coretis Digital Signal Processor from beyerdynamic, described as a flexible digital interface for audio signals, is making its debut at ISE 2016. Twelve analogue inputs and eight analogue outputs make Coretis appropriate for almost any application in professional installations, the company says, pointing out that eight digital input and output channels are available via an AVB network. The fixed DSP structure and the simple but very extensive user interface are said to enable fast and sophisticated configuration, while the 20 x 16 audio matrix allows versatile audio routing. Among other things, the auto mixer, leveller, ducker and equaliser can be configured and are clearly displayed with their status.

Bose’s new FreeSpace amplifier line

Bose will be showing four new dual-channel additions to its FreeSpace amplifier line, optimised for premium commercial applications such as retail, restaurants and hospitality. There are two mixer amplifiers (IZA 2120-HZ/LZ) and two expansion amplifiers (ZA 2120-HZ/LZ), each at 120W per channel. FreeSpace amplifiers boast the ability to be quickly configured without the use of a PC. The IZA models include an integrated audio DSP providing Bose loudspeaker EQ, Bose Dynamic EQ, Opti-voice paging/ducking, audio mixing/routing, bass/treble adjustments, remote control options and an auto standby feature. On show from K-array will be the KU44 line array element, a thin subwoofer designed to complement the company’s Slim Array Technology. It is a compact, array-suitable bass element, designed to combine with mid-high speakers to provide a full-range frequency response with high output in a ‘virtually invisible’ profile.

The line source sub has a frequency range of 50Hz to 150Hz and is comprised of two 4in neodymium transducers and two 4in passive radiators, which the company says are engineered for maximum linear excursion and minimum residual noise.

DIGITAL SIGNAGE, DISPLAYS AND PROJECTION Daktronics will showcase its HD LED product series. Currently available in 1.9mm and 2.7mm pitch, these new products are intended for applications that require pristine image quality from an arm’s length away. The displays feature technology designed to manage heat, which is one of the largest influencers in display performance. The result, says the company, is superior performance and long display life, as well as greater colour depth, vibrancy and uniformity during the life of the product. Making its European debut at ISE 2016 is the new E-Vision 8500 Laser projector from Digital Projection. Following on from the 3-chip DLP technology, laser-based HIGHLite Laser, the new platform uses single chip DLP technology to deliver 8,000 lumens at a resolution of 1920 x 1200. The projector benefits from a 20,000-hour solid state illumination source and what the company describes as ‘fit and forget’, meaning that it needs only minimal maintenance E-Vision will make its European debut throughout the

February 2016

‘We’ve got to kick this one’ A couple of weeks before ISE 2016, ISE managing director Mike Blackman spoke to Paddy Baker about his plans and aspirations for the show What are you most looking forward to at ISE 2016? Or is that a ‘favourite child’ question? My favourite child is the Friday – and I’m looking forward to the keynote with Michio Kaku. It’s the first time we’ve gone at this level to bring in someone so renowned to do a keynote, and we’re all quite excited about this. I had a talk with him last week and he’s got some very interesting, provocative things to say that are relevant to our industry. AV-IT convergence is a strong theme this year. Are you seeing a flurry of pre-registrations from the IT sector? It’s the first time we’ve done such a strong campaign in that sector. In the past, just below 10% of our attendance has been from the IT sector. I don’t know the final numbers yet because we’re still getting registrations flowing in, but we anticipate seeing a rise in that area – particularly because of the work we’re doing with media partners and exhibitor partners to reach them. And what do you hope AV and IT professionals will each take away from this part of the programme? We had a roundtable with the IT press before Christmas. What came out very much was that they’re both talking about the same things but from different sides of the fence. Unfortunately most of the IT people think AV is just part of what they do. We hope they’ll go away saying, we see this as a specialist area, it involves us, it’s encroaching on what we do. I think the AV people already know the relevance and significance of IT in their business, but hopefully this will bring it more to the forefront – they need to understand more about what IT professionals want, and what makes them tick. A show director (in another industry) once said to me, only half in jest: “If only we could find a way of holding a show without a final day.” Do you think that exhibitors and attendees will treat Friday like a ‘proper’ show day? I wrote a blog on the ISE website where I gave my opinion about why last days are always an issue. It’s one of these chicken-and-egg situations. If the key managers from the

exhibitors don’t come then the attendees don’t come, because they say there’s no-one important to talk to. And the exhibitor executives say, if nobody important comes to talk to me, I’m not going to stay. So we’ve got to kick this one. We’ve done a big campaign, working with most of the manufacturers – I’ve made personal calls to a lot of these guys, telling them, I need you to stay Friday, and you need to tell your customers you’re there so they know they can see you. We’ve done some spot surveys with people who have registered, and we’re getting a very good response about the Friday. We’re pretty optimistic – it’s one of those things that can work if everybody goes with the right attitude. Finally, is there anything about the ISE show that you would like to change, but can’t? There’s one particular issue where Jason McGraw [who runs the InfoComm show] and I have the same problem but the opposite way round. When he’s in Orlando or Las Vegas it’s always too hot, when we’re in Amsterdam it’s much too cold. The ideal solution would be to flip – we do June and they do February – but unfortunately the logistics of making that happen are almost impossible. You can imagine: us trying to get a slot in the RAI in June would mean moving around 20 other exhibitions to free up space for us, and Jason has exactly the same problem in Orlando and Las Vegas. We’re such big events now. So Jason will continue to give out cold water during build-up, and we’ll keep giving out tea and hot soup!

HDBaseT, DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI provide the necessary connectivity. imotion outdoor displays intended for passenger information will be on show at the Infinitus stand, intended for wall or ceiling mount installations. Stretched 38in imotionLITE screens, with 1,000nit luminance, are intended for shaded areas and underpasses, while the 2,000-nit imotionFLOW 47in landscape wall mount unit is made to handle substantial exposure to sun. LED display manufacturer SiliconCore is showcasing its smallest LED pixel pitch display yet: a 0.95mm prototype. This brings the benefits of very fine pixel pitch displays to applications requiring extremely close proximity viewing. The display is said to feature superb contrast ratio and greyscale qualities, with the ability to achieve 2000 nits in brightness. 4K resolution is achieved at 165in diagonal and optimum viewing can be experienced at less than 1m. This advancement in pixel pitch, contrast ratio and brightness has been achieved thanks to SiliconCore’s common cathode driver architecture. This reduces the heat output of displays for lower power consumption and a lifespan of over 100,000 hours.

Bleu Comm Azur, showing with KNX, will show its augmented reality realKNX app. Users simply download the app to their smartphone and by pointing their device to a lamp, for instance, can use their phone’s camera function to switch the lamp on and off. AR allows the app to recognise objects from windows and shutters to curtains, the outlet of a climate system, a speaker, or even a swimming pool. It is possible to assign these real objects to any KNX function of an installation. As soon as an object is recognised within the app, the corresponding information will be visible and the slider/button/text/value will be usable directly in the camera picture. iRidium mobile will demonstrate the wide control and monitoring capabilities of its 3.0 platform, which consists of two products: iRidium pro for professional integrators, and iRidium lite for installers. With iRidium pro, users can create customised control projects with any interface. iRidium lite automatically finds KNX, other automation hardware, and Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets and creates a control interface without programming, directly from an iOS, Android or Windows device. Both products support project update and storage via the cloud, and are compatible with the iRidium Server – a software agent that can be launched on different hardware platforms for storing data on resource

30 TECHNOLOGY FEATURE: COLLABORATION

February 2016

According to Microsoft, the Surface Hub is designed to “unlock the power of the group”

It’s good to share

Key Points n Collaboration isn’t a separate application – it’s at the heart of a unified communications strategy n The corporate weight that Microsoft has put behind its Surface Hub promises to galvanise the market

According to American humorist Dave Barry: “If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings’.” But, finds Ian McMurray, AV technology is providing the tools that might make Barry change his mind

M

eetings continue to dominate the way we work: according to a study of one company by management consultants Bain & Company, published in the Harvard Business Review, some 300,000 employee hours were consumed each year in supporting a single meeting. And: it must be hard to feel like a winner in the game of life if, as a CEO, you find you spend 50% of your time in meetings – which is, apparently, typically the case. If you haven’t seen the classic training video Meetings, Bloody Meetings created by Video Arts, starring John Cleese, it comes highly recommended. It does, however, recall what seems like something of a bygone era when all meetings were scheduled, disciplined, formal – and duly minuted (or not, as the video demonstrates). The world has moved on, and the nature of meetings has unquestionably changed. They’re now far more likely to be ad hoc, casual, informal – and probably more productive… And, such is the geographically dispersed nature of many of today’s companies, it’s highly likely that all the participants will not be at the same location. What each participant will almost certainly have, though, is information to share with colleagues.

30-34 Install188 Feature 1_Final.indd 1

Welcome to the brave new world of collaboration – part, along with videoconferencing, for example, of the same, overarching concept of unified communications (UC).

Eureka moment Ray McGroarty, global director for enterprise UC solutions at Polycom, provides some insight. “Brian Hinman, Polycom’s co-founder, said once that his ‘Eureka moment’ was when he realised that we were not in the videoconferencing business,” he smiles, “but in the collaboration industry.” McGroarty is clear that UC and collaboration are symbiotic, and that UC necessarily has collaboration at its heart – giving the lie to a widely perpetuated generalisation that, where videoconferencing was designed to enable people to talk together, collaboration tools are designed to enable them to work together. “Meetings aren’t just about seeing and hearing other people,” McGroarty continues. “It’s about working together on a project, plan or even a specific document. You meet with people to collaborate.” “Unified communications is a broad umbrella term,” believes Bryan Edwards, sales manager at UK integrator Reflex. “There’s no one product

n The focus remains on interoperability and scalability as users need to keep their options open as the market develops n The opportunity for the AV industry is in developing collaboration solutions for specific applications and use cases

that can achieve unified communications. Rather, it is a set of products and services that work together to provide a consistent, unified user experience. In my view, UC incorporates collaboration – for example, through collaborative devices such as touchscreens and interactive whiteboards or software services, as part of an overall UC strategy. In a nutshell, UC is the strategy; collaboration is one of the tactics to achieve it.”

Frustrating, painful A worthwhile question, though, is perhaps how collaboration solutions are different to the AV solutions already widely used in meetings? Mark Tildesley, general manager at TD Maverick, describes what he has experienced. “Meetings are often a frustrating, painful experience where not enough actually gets done,” he says. “Many people consider them the biggest waste of time in their work week. It takes too long to start a meeting – 12 minutes on average – and further time is wasted trying to get complex technology to work. The flow of discussion is interrupted when someone tries to share content or bring in external data and the first person to connect to the projector ‘drives the whole meeting, making it harder for others

to share content. Ideas can be lost at the end of a meeting; action items and content aren’t always shared with participants, and the remote experience can be very frustrating: meaningful collaboration often requires travel in order to be there in person.” Few would disagree with his assessment of the shortcomings of meetings that all too many have shared – and collaboration solutions are designed to address them. Microsoft’s launch of Office365 has collaboration at its heart: a guiding principle is that most documents – of whatever type – are worked on by multiple people. Here, the cloud comes into its own. Polycom signed a strategic agreement with Microsoft in 2010 and McGroarty’s colleague Charlie James, who is director, Microsoft Alliance, EMEA for Polycom, believes that Office365 – perhaps surprisingly for some – is something that AV companies need to sit up and take notice of. “Developing innovative endpoints that interoperate with Office 365 is a huge market opportunity for the AV industry,” he says, going on to describe his company’s recent launch of Polycom RealPresence Trio, which he claims is the world’s first smart hub for group collaboration. “The AV and IT industries are becoming much closer in terms of technologies used,” adds Nick Mawer, marketing manager at Kramer, “but in particular, we have found ways of directly supporting the Microsoft office solutions – reducing boundaries and improving flexibility when collaborating.” He points out that Kramer’s VIA wireless presentation solution is designed primarily for local collaboration, but that VIAs can be linked to connect remote participants. “The VIA is designed to make it easier to get actual work done during meetings,” laughs Mawer.

Great fanfare Office 365 isn’t Microsoft’s only offering for collaboration, though. Last year, to great fanfare, it announced the Surface Hub. “Microsoft created a first of its kind experience with Surface Hub,” believes Tildesley, whose company secured rights to distribute the Surface Hub throughout Europe. “The device is simple and intuitive enough for anyone to feel comfortable walking up and using it, blending Microsoft’s services together into a single package to give people an intuitive, powerful way to work together.” “The AV/UC industry is essential to the successful implementation of this new solution,” he continues. “In my opinion, the AV/UC experts ensure the functionality and, most importantly, the end-user experience is outstanding. Traditional AV/UC companies are used to bringing

Surface Pro: under the hood Available in two versions – 55in screen (HD) and 84in (4K) – the Surface Hub’s technology is almost as impressive as the marketing muscle Microsoft has put behind it. The two models are just about identical in all respects, except that the larger screen version needs the greater processing power provided by a Core i7 processor and NVIDIA graphics rather than the smaller version’s Core i5 and Intel graphics. Both come equipped with 100-point multi-touch; a 128GB SSD; Ethernet and WiFi; USB ports; a 1080p camera, microphone, speakers and audio in/out; DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA; NFC and Bluetooth; and ambient light and PIR presence sensors. The operating system is Windows 10. complex solutions to their customers and making these solutions easy to use and a positive experience; with the Microsoft Hub solution this is more important than ever and this really plays to the strengths of the these guys.” First deliveries of the Hub were delayed, so user feedback is still in short supply. “The jury on the Surface Hub is still out,” notes Romeo Baertsoen, VP strategic marketing,

‘Collaboration solutions are now easy to install, user friendly and even sleek in design’ Charlie James, Polycom

corporate at Barco. “It will be very interesting to see how people experience the product. Microsoft seems to have done a lot of homework. The product is aimed at the market segment of group productivity where the AV industry has been typically very strong. There are already a fair amount of products in that area, like the SMART boards, InFocus Mondopad and so on that have had varying success. Microsoft has, of course, a tremendous brand, an enormous commercial reach and tons of data on how people use their products. This might prove to be a successful combination for the use cases they are aiming at.”

neither are Kramer nor Polycom the only manufacturers, to see the opportunity to add value in collaboration applications. ‘Collaboration’ has become a portmanteau word for working together – yet different industries, different companies, different teams and different individuals are likely to be looking for it to achieve very specific goals to mirror unique ways of working. A recent Polycom press release quoted the company’s senior vice president Ashan Willy as saying that “collaboration technology for the workplace of the future is not a one-size-fits-all proposition”. “The term ‘collaboration’ is used to describe a number of different means of communication – anything from a simple telephone call and working through a document, to joining an HD videoconference and sharing rich media to and from boardrooms, laptops, PCs and mobile devices,” explains Richard Middleton, country manager for UK and Ireland at Lifesize. “For some organisations, a simple presence and chat service is deemed as collaboration; it’s all dependant on individual needs and requirements.” For Middleton, the fact that there is no onesize-fits-all solution in the market place today means that product interoperability with as many third-party technologies as possible is critical for providers to ensure customers have access to a ‘best of breed’ solution. “End-users are looking for specific solutions that solve their specific issues,” says Baertson. “I expect that the integrator community will still have to link together different elements in order to build that unique solution, very much like they do today.”

Fantastic potential “As yet, we have not installed one Surface Hub,” says Edwards. “However, we are seeing a huge impact for the potential of this solution with our clients. Microsoft has done a great job of getting the message out to the market. The result is that the sell is actually quite straightforward for us. It’s a product that offers fantastic potential for integrators to add value around the solution.” Reflex is not the only integrator, and

Common denominators “But,” he goes on, “there are a couple of common denominators. Solutions need to be secure so that confidential information cannot be accessed by unauthorised parties, and to be open towards different devices and operating systems as today’s workplace has become a mix of all types, enabling the BYOD trend. They need to be guest friendly, acknowledging that

22/01/2016 16:21

32 FEATURE: COLLABORATION one-third of all meetings have external parties involved. Solutions need to be user-friendly – and they need to be IT friendly. It’s said that an average IT manager runs a marathon per year to solve meeting room problems. The more technology we bring in, the more this poor IT manager needs to run, unless you bring in full remote management and maintenance options.” “There are indeed common themes,” agrees Edwards, “such as allowing dispersed workforces to work as a team, improving communications, speeding up decision-making processes, making cost savings on overheads or accessing new revenue streams. However, every customer conversation is different and, of course, priorities will change according to each requirement based around their particular need. As with any customer discussion, the key is to listen carefully. That way, what we can provide is quite simple – solutions that actually work for that customer.” As the collaboration market matures, it certainly seems likely that it will tend to fragment, taking those basic underlying principles that are common to almost all organisations, but adapting the solution for specific markets – something that McGroarty foresees.

February 2016

“There is always going to be a need for specialised endpoints, especially in particular verticals,” he believes. “For example, the healthcare environment requires medical-grade imaging quality as well as specific safety features, or the oil and gas sector looks for ‘tough’ endpoints.” He too notes the need for open standards, interoperability, scalability and flexibility in the base system, as well as the way that UCaaS – unified communications as a service – is bringing the opportunity of collaborative working to new classes of customer to whom it was previously unaffordable.

Improving business processes “Truly flexible UC solutions actually become woven into the fabric of an organisation,” he continues. “It’s all about building these technologies into workflows, so that they improve mission-critical business processes. That might be adding WebRTC-enabled ‘video chat’ to a website for the purposes of improving customer services engagements, or opening up the recruitment process by allowing anyone to interview by video from wherever they are in the world.” Edwards warms to the theme. “There’s no

real evidence of fragmentation yet, in terms of specific solutions for specific types of use,” he asserts, “and I’m not sure it will go down that route as far as hardware is concerned. A set of hardware components can be combined in many different configurations to provide a unique solution. Having said that, we have never tried to push a single UC approach to all our clients, so in that respect, I suppose we do adopt a fragmented approach to the solutions we propose.” So: where is today’s demand for collaboration solutions coming from? Baertson sees most demand coming from companies that have already invested substantially in AV – which is hardly surprising. Mawer notes universities and other educational establishments as being very receptive, which is why Kramer was at Bett last month. Hotels, serviced offices, corporate boardrooms and even entertainment venues are also among Kramer’s collaboration customers. Middleton, however, sees collaboration as addressing a much deeper need in business – and society – as a whole. In the same way that meetings are changing, so too is corporate culture – and the AV industry is supporting that shift. “Many people assume it’s the millennials

driving the demand for collaboration solutions,” he says, “but when you think about the employees that most need flexible and remote working in order to meet both their professional and personal needs, it’s actually primarily more established workers. Those with caring responsibilities, whether for children or parents, want to be able to work these around their careers – so they need to be productive from anywhere. Coupled with this is a shrinking trend for relocation among business leaders; studies indicate that two out of three of the world’s most effective leaders would be unwilling to relocate for a role. They no longer see the need to uproot their families and lives, or to endure excessive commutes – thanks to collaboration solutions. Collaboration, as part of a unified communications strategy, is making it possible for people to balance work and life in a way that makes them most effective in both areas.”

Case Study

Fire crews collaborate with InFocus Collaboration is often thought of as being about commercial organisations – but the Addison Fire Protection District (AFD) outside Chicago has deployed InFocus Mondopads to achieve similar benefits. Having crews together is essential for training on fire scene strategies and tactics – but the travel involved in getting them all to the same place was expensive in terms of both time and money. The InFocus Mondopads that AFD has installed at each of its three stations have allowed a high level of collaborative learning – and have saved time and money, as well as increasing efficiency and responsiveness.

Where next? It seems that there are many reasons why collaboration will become a significant driver for the AV industry. The question is: where does it go from here? “We believe that, while there is room for innovation and we are always looking for new

ways to make the collaboration experience better, we are at a stage where real-time sharing and collaboration is as close to a faceto-face meeting as it can be,” believes James. “Software solutions have always been ahead of the game. Cloud services, for example, have

increasingly excelled at allowing for instant sharing and communications. We see new updates continuously, such as Microsoft’s Office 365, but software tools have generally been at the forefront of collaboration. Hardware, however, has had a bit more of a reputation for

34 FEATURE: COLLABORATION difficult set-ups. It’s here that we have seen the most significant improvement in recent years. Collaboration solutions are now easy to install, user friendly and even sleek in design.” For Mawer too, the important thing is ease of use – but as the beginning of a productivity journey, rather than as an end in itself. “Users can interact with each other’s devices, have brainstorming sessions, and ensure that they walk away at the end of the meeting with all the information, having expended the least effort,” he says. “The keys to collaboration are functionality and simplicity. If you can make the basics simple, then the user is more receptive to learning the advanced functions, and they get more out of the technology.”

February 2016

Potential There’s little doubt that, for integrators and manufacturers alike, collaboration offers the potential to create differentiation by adding value – something that Edwards relishes. “I think, as AV professionals, we need to grab the opportunity these developments present with both hands,” he believes. “In the past, the software applications that our clients used had no real impact on the AV side of things. Now, we can embrace the opportunities that Office 365, MS Lync and Skype for Business and the like present. It gives us the ability to talk to clients about integrated hardware and software solutions based around the collaboration opportunity.”

Kramer’s VIA Campus is designed to offer collaboration and engagement tools for education and corporate training environments

There is a rather delicious irony that Microsoft, the company that brought us “death by PowerPoint” – the fault, it must be said, of its users rather than the tool itself – has become a key player in reimagining and reinvigorating what meetings could and should be. It’s hard, for those of us who have been around for a while, to comprehend the possibility that anyone might one day start talking about “engagement” and “productivity” in the same breath as they talk about “meetings”. But that, increasingly, is what’s happening – meetings are starting to achieve something, it seems, thanks to the AV industry. Even better, though, is the opportunity that collaboration solutions are providing to imaginative, resourceful manufacturers and integrators to develop new solutions tailored to specific industries, company profiles and use cases. Everyone’s a winner.

36 BUSINESS FEATURE: NETWORKED AUDIO

February 2016

The Ninth Juducial Circuit Court in central Florida has upgraded its Biamp system to include the Tesira platform of products enabling its audio needs to be unified and providing a single point of software control

Mapping the lay of the land

Key Points n Widespread adoption of AES67 during 2015 is widely regarded as an important factor in the introduction of networked audio n The forthcoming control standard, AES70, is set to be one of the industry stories of 2016 n Broadcast and ‘traditional’ fixed install applications – such as conference centres, corporate headquarters and colleges of higher education – are showing increased interest in networked audio

The ongoing roll out of products supporting one or more networking technologies and a flurry of activity around standards mean that 2015 was a landmark year for the adoption of networked audio. David Davies takes stock of some of the key changes – and looks ahead to one or two developments likely to hit the headlines in 2016

A

t the beginning of 2015, RH Consulting’s The Death of Analogue and the Rise of Audio Networking white paper underlined the extent to which customers are now faced with a burgeoning variety of networked audio products. As the year drew to a close, some of the leading vendors were able to highlight impressive rates of adoption – most obviously Audinate, which at time of writing could cite more than 550 products enabled with its Dante technology – while the number of landmark projects based around elaborate audio networks continued to grow. Adding to the momentum, 2015 also witnessed some significant activity around standards. The TSN (Time Sensitive Networking) extension appeared to give additional lustre to the AVB project, while the AES67 standard – which delivers interoperability between existing IP-based audio networking technologies – was frequently used in conjunction with terms like ‘gamechanger’. Now looming on the immediate horizon is AES70, which will define a scalable protocol architecture for the control and monitoring of professional media networks. As 2016 gets underway, Installation offers what is essentially a brief progress report on networked audio – in particular, examining the impact of standards initiatives current and future, and the applications where the new technologies are really making an impact.

AES67 adoption The fact that the central message around AES67 – that it can be used to ensure that products running existing IP audio networking technologies (eg, Dante, Livewire, Ravenna, Q-LAN) can successfully co-exist – is relatively straightforward has surely be an important ingredient of its success in the often confusing world of networked audio. Vendors announced their support for the standard throughout 2015,

‘We see AES67 being adopted more and more by vendors in the broadcast and install markets’ Christian Diehl, Riedel

culminating in a live demo – organised by the AES67-promoting Media Networking Alliance – at the AES Convention in New York that featured no fewer than 22 products from Genelec, Lawo, Merging, Yamaha, Solid State Logic and others. Andreas Hildebrand, senior product manager at Ravenna technology developer ALC NetworX, is in no doubt about the significance of the demo. “While we had already successfully verified the

fundamentals of AES67 during the 2014 plugfest hosted in Munich, this was the first time that people just brought their devices, pre-configured with some basic parametrisation (ie, IP addresses, multicast address assignments, etc), plugged them into a single switch, and configured stream offerings and reception dynamically on-site,” he confirms. “It was also for the first time that devices from all IP-based solutions (ie, Ravenna, Livewire, QLAN and Dante) were present on one network and participated successfully in AES67 stream exchange.” Products with AES67 support continue to mount up, but that doesn’t mean that the roadmap for the standard is entirely clear. Riedel product manager Christian Diehl points to full AES67 integration in its Tango and Smartpanel products, and notes that a relevant Artist interface card is on the way. “We see AES67 being adopted more and more by vendors in the broadcast and install markets,” he says. Nonetheless, there is a feeling that AES67 is still “a relatively young standard. The implementations of the standard still differ, especially regarding the support of different protocols (eg, SIP). We expect these, and other issues, to be ironed out over time.” For Clear-Com, director of product management Simon Browne confirms that the intercom giant is “closely watching developments with AES67 and Dante and planning for future integration”, but

22/01/2016 16:23

AVB/TSN: still advancing AES67 and other Layer 3-based IP audio developments have understandably dominated the networking debate during the past 12 months, but the AVB and TSN standards are continuing to achieve traction across different markets – as Gary Stuebing, president of AVB/TSN promoting organisation the AVnu Alliance, explains: “TSN capability in Ethernet is proving valuable across an increasing breadth of markets including pro AV, automotive, consumer and industrial. At ISE 2016, we [will be] continuing our commitment to AVB/TSN education to keep up-to-date with the accelerating industry momentum in pro AV and other TSN markets. We will be hosting a half-day training education programme the day before the show opens at the RAI and a half-dozen other AVB/TSN sessions throughout the official show programme.” Meanwhile, Stuebing is able to point to a dozen new official AVnu Alliance members, among them Calnex, L-Acoustics and Testing Tech. for now the firm remains agnostic. “It’s clear that everything is going IP, including intercom, but there is a need to be confident that everything will run over a network where intercom is going to be the third priority after video and audio,” he says, describing the continued uncertainty in the industry as “horrible. I really wish the industry would make a decision one way or the other!” Meanwhile, some leading vendors are continuing to look at AES67 in the context of their commitment to AVB. For Biamp Systems, product manager, audio systems Justin O’Connor remarks: “The Tesira line currently supports a Dante card (DAN-1) and we will include AES67 support in a firmware release once we have finished firmware from Audinate, and have fully tested and qualified its operation. As far as AES67 over AVB/TSN [is concerned], we will always operate in accordance with the interoperability specifications as set out by the AVnu Alliance; we remain steadfast partners in AVnu. Should it be determined that AES67 is to become a part of the interoperability specifications, we will implement our solution in accordance with that determination.”

AES70 on the way Although AES67 adoption is set to accelerate during 2016, the

36-40 Install188 Feature 2_Final.indd 2

focus of the standards discussion is bound to shift towards AES70 – the forthcoming control protocol architecture that went out for public comment in November and became a published standard early in the new year. The extent to which AES70 will complement AES67 has been a matter of some debate, so Hildebrand’s concise clarification here is very welcome. “While AES67 covers synchronisation, stream transport and connection management – everything which is essentially required for audio signal exchange – it does not address device control and service discovery,” he says. “AES70 is an independent yet potentially complementary standard covering device configuration and control, stream configuration and routing management, and elementary device and service discovery. The success of AES67 builds on its restriction to absolutely necessary definitions, taking away any implementation complexity, but leaving room for some potentially required administrative intervention. AES70 addresses a much more complex (yet useful) area of operation.” Taken together, the two standards possess “good potential to team up for an enhanced audioover-IP experience. However, it remains to be seen to what extent manufacturers of audio networking

38 FEATURE: NETWORKED AUDIO solutions, which usually already cover enhanced functionality, will adopt and support AES70.” With the standard now official, many of the industry’s leading developers are mulling its implications with increased interest. Audinate vice president of marketing Joshua Rush remarks: “We support the concept of open control, and feel that it will add value to the AV industry at large. The majority of the OCA members who helped to define the AES70 standard are also Dante licensees.” Browne confirms that Clear-Com is also keeping tabs on the progress of AES70. “It is something that we have been aware of [since it started as OCA], and now it is becoming more mature we do think it will be one of the things we look to participate in during 2016,” he says.

February 2016

of deployment in this area”, Hildebrand also pinpoints “a significant growth in the installed sound and production markets, where specifically Merging Technologies with its Ravenna networked audio converters, Horus and Hapi, has gained significant ground.” For Riedel, Diehl also mentions broadcast with regard to both OB vans and larger studio

applications: “More and more customers are starting to think about audio networking when making plans for these bigger installations.” However, he also suggests that “IP-based [networking] is more common in the install market than in the broadcast industry. We see big and small installations in theatres, stadiums, cruise ships and government buildings where

‘Real world’ applications While standards are making it easier for vendors to promote the benefits of networked audio as a whole, they don’t guarantee universal popularity in different market segments – or even rule out the possibility of dramatically varying adoption rates. Fortunately, it appears that significant progress is being made in most primary areas of fixed install. While the broadcast-focused Ravenna technology “naturally sees the largest field

40 FEATURE: NETWORKED AUDIO audio networks can live on top of existing IP networks without the need for additional wiring.” Biamp’s Parker also alludes to an “increase of networked audio solutions” going into a variety of applications, among them “courtroom or government locations, higher education (university level), and of course business.”

Forthcoming attractions With the aforementioned RH Consulting report highlighting the growth in particular of Dante, the Audinate media networking technology is again bound to generate its fair share of industry headlines in 2016. Set to account for a significant portion of these is Dante Via, the new software product that allows USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt devices – for example microphones, legacy mixing consoles and I/O boxes – to join any Dante audio network. The software – which is set to be showcased throughout ISE 2016 – also enables the creation of a Dante network without the need for dedicated hardware, making it easy to route audio using only computers. “We had a strong feeling that this product was going to help expand the ‘universe’ of Dante users, but it’s evident that this concept of a software-only network is a key factor in the interest that Via is currently enjoying,” says Rush.

February 2016

“I think a lot of people want to work with Dante but may not be in a position to buy dedicated enabled hardware. Via provides them with an alternative approach.” One of the other networking technologies whose growth is underlined by the RH Consulting report, Ravenna, is also able to point to some major developments as 2016 gets underway. “New partners since IBC include 2wcom, a solutions provider specialised in DVB-S/S2 Audio/ IP satellite system solutions, and Modulation Index, a US-based company that provides stateof-the-art audio-over-IP connectivity bridging between in-house programme sources and internet streaming,” says Hildebrand. Meanwhile, Ravenna-related product to be introduced in recent months includes the Neumann DMI-8 digital microphone interface, the Riedel Tango platform with the TNG-200 central unit and the RSP-2318 smartpanel, the DirectOut Montone.42 MADI-to-Ravenna converter, GatesAir’s Flexivia VMexpress audio over IP distribution unit, and Lawo’s new JADE virtual sound card.

Networked nations In a recent conversation, Rush observed the tendency for there to be three primary

stages involved in the acceptance of any new technology. As he remarked: “The first is for people to say ‘this is revolutionary technology that could change how I work’; the second is where they become comfortable enough with the technology that they start to use it in their projects; and the third is where you see mass deployment. I think in 2015 we began to move from the second to the third stage.” In 2016, it seems fairly certain that mass deployment will continue to accelerate. But what is also evident is that there continues to be substantial indecision among end-users about the long-term viability of individual networking technologies. With the number of available networked audio products rising all the time, there is surely an increasingly strong case for a unified, industry-wide educational effort to ensure that the main messages about networked audio are heard loud and clear – and without any ambiguity.

Vaddio surveillance cameras were combined with a lecture capture system at Ashland Dauche College in Ohio

Key Points n AV-IT convergence is expanding further to incorporate surveillance and security systems

An eye on the future The nature of the AV installer’s role is changing as AV services migrate from fixed cables and displays to IP networks and mobile devices. How can other services, such as surveillance video and entry control, be incorporated into the complete solution? Steve Montgomery investigates

T

raditionally, the role of the AV system integrator has been to specify, integrate and commission all the specialised hardware components needed to build sophisticated audiovisual systems. Wideranging requirements and applications have made each installation unique and integrators have had to learn, understand and master many different hardware devices and software applications that have made this a highly specialised profession. However, with the rapid coming of very high bandwidth networks in buildings and the evolution of extremely efficient video coding and decoding tools, some of the functions that were once performed by dedicated, hard-wired AV installations have migrated to IP-based methods of transmission and distribution. IPTV, videoconferencing and lately video-over-IP solutions are now commonplace within most market sectors. “We’re well into the convergence cycle,” says Mike Brandes, CTS, applications engineer, Vaddio. “Soon it will be commonplace for audiovisual technologies to be carried exclusively on IP data networks. Cameras are being ingested into video switching applications and regularly streamed over IP data networks. Entire audiovisual solutions are controlled via Ethernet instead of RS-232. As we move forward, the line between audiovisual and IT will blur even more, in terms of

42-46 Install188 Feature 3_Final.indd 1

products, services and solutions.” This offers great opportunity to AV integrators, he believes: “As a whole, AV professionals are slowly improving their knowledge of network systems. AV companies are now providing whole solutions for conference rooms that incorporate VoIP or SIP, whereas years ago there would have been an AV system and a conference phone, as the telco group wouldn’t be able to master AV, and likewise AV wasn’t always able to handle the telecom side. A natural extension of this is to integrate security and surveillance services into the global AV-IT offering.” Karl Hill, business development, Axis Communications agrees, but points to some obstacles: “All industries are moving towards communication over intelligent networks but system convergence is still in a very early phase. The convergence is limited by the fact that most players are still holding on to proprietary solutions and communication protocols. The video surveillance industry is proof that the emergence of open solutions will increase the pace of system convergence. Axis’ philosophy is that all APIs and protocols should be open and available without any additional costs to enable integration with any third-party system or devices. Our experience shows that most customers are looking for integration. There are no regulatory issues preventing this, but once again the proprietary solutions from many

n AV professionals are well-placed to create systems that combine all technologies and offer new and unique solutions to customers n Video management platforms meeting security industry standards are readily available and extendable n Further convergence and expansion is inevitable as IP-networks become the preferred mechanism for all forms of local and wide-area data transfer

vendors limit the possibility for their customers to integrate with other systems.”

Gaining attention With the constant evolution of the audiovisual industry, everything can be a beacon or a sensor for just about anything else. Individual components, such as cameras, light- and PIRmovement detectors, can be used to gather information and events that can then be used for multiple purposes; feeding data into the local building management system so that lighting, HVAC and security can be controlled and co-ordinated centrally. Devices are now emerging with dual-purpose capability, an example being Vaddio RoboSHOT cameras. In addition to the high-quality native USB 3.0 or HD-SDI conferencing and broadcast outputs, they are capable of transmitting simultaneous IP streams at different resolutions. That stream can then be used by the AV support department for remote equipment monitoring and troubleshooting, by the security team for surveillance and by facilities management for room usage and general building management. As an ever-increasing range of sensing devices are IP-enabled there is far greater opportunity and scope for control systems to be created that use their data outputs to provide better and wider service management, security and safety within buildings. The ability to interface IP-based

44 FEATURE: SURVEILLANCE security devices into a single system is helped by the ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) specification. Created by the ONVIF organisation, an open industry forum, its aims are to “ensure compatibility of individual security devices and make it possible for end users, integrators, consultants and manufacturers to take advantage of the possibilities offered by IP-based physical security solutions. An open standard for the interface of IP-based physical security products enables them to easily integrate products from different vendors into a single solution.” The ONVIF initiative makes it easier to control various types of device from a single platform; including cameras and sensors, door and access control mechanisms and recording devices. Milestone’s XProtect platform is an ONVIFcompliant management interface that is based around the core elements of video surveillance, observation and recording. It can be extended to incorporate whatever level of reporting, alarm response and security and access control is needed for all sizes of business and sites, ranging from individual offices through large organisations to complete towns and cities. As a core platform, it enables integrators and solution providers to build comprehensive

Case Study

St Andrews medical school MediVu system Eighty-four HD pan-tilt-zoom cameras form the core of a video-based learning and review system at the University of St Andrews School of Medicine – covering several clinical skills rooms, bed heads and simulation and consultation rooms. Using the Milestone XProtect Smart Client linked to two IBM servers and a dedicated web portal, students and teachers can review and assess patient interactions. Students enter their username and password and can start and stop recording via a simple touchscreen display over the bed head. The system enables them to carry out guided study tasks in their own time without a teacher or technician present. They view their videos, choose the best clips and move them into their evidence portfolio. Content can be bookmarked and referenced, noting good practice and areas for future improvement, while maintaining full ownership and access rights to the video content. Martyn King, managing director of system integrator, King Communications, explains: “We designed and developed a unique integrated solution from scratch, working closely with Milestone, that is integrated into the university’s Active Directory and Galen Curriculum Management System database. The MedVu system proves that the benefits of Milestone XProtect open platform VMS extend well beyond the traditional security applications for which it was originally designed.”

46 FEATURE: SURVEILLANCE multi-function facility management systems. “XProtect features dozens of new ways for users to control security across their site and to do so using automated procedures so it operates in the background, ensuring complete reliability and coverage,” says Henrik Pedersen, Milestone’s business development manager. “With an enhanced web user interface and connectivity to smart devices, alarms can be generated to notify managers whenever an event occurs that requires attention, allowing them to access video and data remotely from their mobile device.” The XProtect platform provides extensive programming and interface capability, so that a vast, and expanding, range of industry partners provides compatible devices and services. “The latest 4K cameras can be incorporated to deliver high-resolution images and integration of card-holder access management already allows systems to be developed that track people through a building. With the addition of face-recognition software and biometric sensors, even greater levels of security and control are possible through one interface.” The AV industry is evolving rapidly and converging with others. Five years ago just a handful of devices in any audiovisual installation, or security installation resided on the network.

February 2016

The Etihad Pavilion at Milan Expo 2015 included connectivity between CCTV, access, airconditioning, broadcast cameras and AV products with centralised control on Panasonic Toughpads

As Brandes points out: “Typically there was a separate network for security and IP data, and audiovisual equipment existed on purpose-built infrastructures; initially five-wire BNC, then CatX cabling, and latterly fibre. Then control evolved from RS-232/RS-422 to IP-based control. As the needs of the customers continue to evolve, manufacturers will rise to the occasion and deliver products to meet those needs.” AV installers are in an excellent position to consider additional uses for camera and sensor-

based security equipment and take advantage of security technologies. By anticipating future needs and possibilities they are able to offer new and lucrative value-added services to customers beyond their initial requirements.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

The recipe for success

Installed Workroom Video

Maintaining the high standards Groupe Mandar is known for was crucial when fitting out a new demonstration space, writes Joanne Ruddock

G

roupe Mandar is one of France’s biggest importers of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs, delivering produce of the highest quality to five-star hotels and restaurants, wholesalers and leading supermarkets. The company, owned by the Abramczyk family since 1973, prides itself on sharing its passion for produce with its customers, offering them not only the very best produce available, but also insight and expertise in how best to use it to create stunning and delicious dishes. Translating this vision into reality required a practical presentation space, from which Groupe Mandar could demonstrate how to get the very best from fresh produce. The result was l’Academie Mandar – a purpose-built 190sqm facility at its Parisian headquarters featuring a workroom and a high-spec production gallery. Marketing director Serge Faruch explains the set-up: “Up to 19 people can participate in practical culinary courses, watching world-class chefs in a fully equipped, open-plan kitchen environment, or we can use the same space to film recipe preparation and share those with customers who are further afield. We also decided to build an adjoining conference room, so that a larger audience can also watch what is taking place in the kitchen. This is perfect for our press and corporate events, for example

to launch a new product range, so we can also inspire our guests with freshly prepared dishes made with those products.” Visitors are welcomed to the facility by messages displayed on two LG screens. Inside, visual displays continue to be a key element of the audiovisual infrastructure, to deliver the thoroughly immersive culinary experience the Groupe was after. Faruch explains that as there would not be a dedicated technician managing the video output, the equipment chosen had to be intuitive and easy to use, but still offer outstanding quality. “The training and insight that we work to deliver in the Academie reflect the core values that the family has held since Groupe Mandar was founded, and as such, the quality of our video output must also mirror those high standards. The food on screen must look as appetising as it does in the chef’s pan, so we needed broadcast-grade equipment to form the hub of our audiovisual infrastructure, and this was planned alongside the facility build throughout 2015.”

The conference room is also fitted with a video projector to allow any large corporate groups to all get an excellent view of what’s going on in the kitchen. “We’ve positioned small action cameras in various positions on the chefs’ station, so that every step of the process is captured,” explains Faruch.

who may not have a technical background, and yet still allow us to ensure we deliver content that looks professional, ensuring the perfect showcase for our produce ranges.”

Central hub

Blackmagic equipment is an integral part of the production suite

Currently one camera offers a tight shot on the chef’s workspace and one provides a wide shot from the back of the room. This set-up will be extended in the coming months: a camera positioned to give a wide shot from the front of the room and a motorised camera for wide shots and angles are set to be installed. The live programme mix for the facility is produced on an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K, with one of the Groupe Mandar team

The facility has already hosted a range of important events for the Groupe, such as a press conference to launch a campaign to promote French-grown garlic, as well as an event to celebrate the first honey harvest in Rungis. “The workshop will form the central hub for all of our product marketing,” concludes Faruch. “From the moment customers step into the kitchen, they get a sense of our high standards, and the audiovisual infrastructure that we’ve installed ensures that this impression remains strong, long after the events are concluded.”

taking the helm in programme direction. Faruch explains that the ATEM’s production features made it the perfect choice for the workshop’s video workflow. “The built-in multiview combined with intuitive control software makes it very simple for us to keep a track of what’s happening on each of the cameras, and to produce a logical and educational programme. The Blackmagic products are extremely intuitive, even for people

onumental Parliamentary history has been brought to life using audiovisual technology in the new and highly captivating Parliamentary Education Centre, located near the Palace of Westminster in London. The facility includes themed rooms looking at Commons, Lords, Monarchy and My Parliament, and an immersive Discovery Space. Electrosonic was responsible for the AV design and systems integration for the Discovery Space. This sensory, interactive room is designed to connect young people with parliament and democracy and utilises 360º Different versions of the show cater for different age groups – the desired version can be selected via iPad

projection technology to envelop students in a fast-paced experience that blends engaging content with spectacular visuals. Four Optoma projectors are ceiling mounted to facilitate the continuous video display around the walls, giving students a real feeling of actually being part of political history. Electrosonic worked alongside Centrescreen for the visual content, which includes a visually vibrant 15-minute production where historical events connected to each Chamber of parliament are depicted. “The students are always transfixed during the Story of Parliament film and feel like they are genuinely in either the House of Commons or the House of Lords during the virtual Chamber experiences,” says Phil Johnson, centre manager, Houses of Parliament. Students see events such as when the suffragettes fiercely protested in the House of Commons in 1908, and when the Duchess of Queensbury attempted to gain access to the House of Lords Chamber in 1739. The projection is accompanied by six Tannoy Di5a powered speakers to create an immersive sound. To ensure that all audiences ranging from key stage two to five respond positively to the

As a result of the new Education Facility, the Houses of Parliament Education Service is expecting student visits to more than double in 2016 from 45,000 to 100,000. “The Discovery Space is an outstanding visual experience that is the show piece of our new Education Centre,” comments Dr EmmaJane Watchorn, head of education at the Houses of Parliament. “We’re passionate about engaging young people with democracy, and the immersive space enables us to do that in a unique and engaging way.” The Discovery Space is connected to the Electrosonic ESCAN remote monitoring service to support continuous operational reliability. In the event of a fault occurring with the AV systems, an alert will be created for the Electrosonic team to swiftly respond.

taircases that loop back on themselves while constantly ascending; interlocking geometric patterns that morph into fields and then birds; buildings and objects that couldn’t exist in three dimensions but can be beautifully represented in two. Welcome to the world of Maurits Cornelis (MC) Escher (1898-1972). As an artist, Escher continually pushed the boundaries of creativity using optical themes, infinite perspectives and impossible geometries that challenged the brain to visualise new frontiers of art. His vast portfolio of work is reflected in the Escher Museum (Escher in Het Paleis), housed in the Lange Voorhout Palace in The Hague, a former royal residence dating from the 18th century. The museum is a treasure trove of drawings, carvings and interactive experiences all focused around the often mathematically inspirational and impossible structures and scenes for which Escher is world famous. When general manager Marcel Westerdiep took charge of the Escher Museum, the ‘hands-on’ interactive element was outdated and needed to be refreshed. He knew that a showpiece platform,

n Pufferfish PufferSphere M600 spherical display

About the installer n Pufferfish specialises in spherical projection systems. Spun off from a university research project, it began trading in 2006 n It has offices in Edinburgh and Ontario n The company offers a full-service motion design and content building facility, offering bespoke 3D, 2D and post-production work n Clients include Audi, the National Museum of Scotland and Disney Epcot Center; PufferSpheres have also been used at Eurovision and on a Coldplay tour just as unusual as Escher’s challenging works, would help to increase visitor numbers. Seeing the PufferSphere spherical display from Edinburgh-based company Pufferfish at a trade show in Germany, he immediately visualised the impact this could have on bringing the Escher exhibits to life. Westerdiep explains: “To my mind, using a spherical display was a most pioneering way of presenting art. This is a very subjective thing. Many museums are heavily subsidised which, in my opinion has led to a lack of ‘cutting edge’ and invention where visitor interaction is concerned. We are the people tasked with displaying the artworks from the most creative people who have ever lived and we should be thinking as creatively as possible in delivering the artwork to as broad an audience as possible.”

22/01/2016 17:23

referencing him. “We kept Marcel fully abreast of our progress and discussed our ideas at the various developmental stages,” he adds. Finally Prochak and his team installed the PufferSphere M600 display at the Escher Museum. The challenges were using an unknown touch and co-ordinates system, trying to encompass what is ostensibly a very unwieldy camera rig into a games engine along with very complicated geometry, but one that was robust enough to withstand tens of thousands of annual visitor interactions. The PufferSphere assimilates many aspects of Escher’s work – reflections, infinite rooms, spherical objects and warping

Challenges However, Westerdiep and his team faced two challenges: how to get the story of Escher told within the Puffersphere, and, just as importantly, how to tell that story without infringing stringent copyright on the works of Escher, governed by The Escher Foundation. Tim Prochak, head of content at Pufferfish Displays, admits to being initially hesitant about how to approach the project, given these restrictions. “What we did was to tap into the ‘spirit’ of Escher,” he explains. “Of course, Escher dealt a lot with imaginary geometries and our process, after a lot of trial and error, was to house a 3D games engine within the PufferSphere for the interaction element, thereby building and creating assets for the 3D program, which then led us to the challenges of dealing with imaginary and unreal geometries that worked on a 2D level. Trying to build that in a 3D space causes problems, because so much of it is angle based.” Along with Pufferfish lead developer Jeremy Green, Prochak experimented with different camera angles to create the sensation of an off-kilter geometry that tapped into Escher’s style without truly

52-53 Install188 Solutions 4_Final.indd 2

Making sense Prochak believes that the PufferSphere is a very Eschertype display, most notably because it assimilates many aspects of his work – reflections, infinite rooms, spherical objects and warping – in a way that makes sense to the user. The data is layered onto the PufferSphere in such a way that if you rub the sphere with your hand you can rub away the first layer of video to reveal a different world underneath; when you take your hand off, the top layer slowly closes back again. The imagery and data created for the PufferSphere were largely influenced by The Infinite Library, Jorge Luis Borges’s 1941 story about a library containing every possible combination of letters – every work that could ever be written. The Escher Museum installation is one of Prochak’s favourite installations, because it is something that initially worked on a purely aesthetic level and because it is a fun, interesting exhibit that explores a lot of interesting problems of geometry and maths. He says: “When we first installed the PufferSphere, we watched to see people’s bemusement using the interactive spherical display. When you see the merest hint of a smile, then we consider that a job well done.”

NanoSlim displays improve passenger experience NanoLumens, in partnership with systems integrator Ford Audio-Video, has completed the installation of two 44.65ft x 7.28ft NanoLumens NanoSlim LED displays at Honolulu International Airport. According to Ford Audio-Video project engineer, Travis Ellis: “The goal of the project was to provide departure flight information that could be visible throughout each of the two lobbies that are approximately 120ft in depth. Additionally, the airport required that there be additional LED real estate space to show content of passenger interest, such as a destination city’s weather and a Hawaii tourism video slideshow.” To operate the NanoLumens displays, Ford Audio-Video installed SITA-manufactured software running on Dell Optiplex XE2 computers to generate the flight information in addition to a BrightSign 4K242 solid state media player to output the destination city weather and Hawaii Tourism video slideshow.

Touchscreens and touchpanels Manufacturers are producing a greater number of high-specification touch solutions, with multiple user functionality a popular feature as well as flexibility in screen configuration, writes Duncan Proctor

Multiuser functionality from eyefactive The OMEGA multitouch module system from eyefactive is designed to be integrated vertically or horizontally into existing concepts and architectures such as tables, walls or shop windows and can be operated by multiple users simultaneously. As a modular system, single 47in LCD rearprojection modules with 0.8mm pixel pitch can be pieced together in a variety of shapes and formats including round and curved configurations. OMEGA modules are equipped with a tracking PC, which supplies a master PC with user interactions. The master PC shows the installed apps on the seamless display. Single modules are integrated into larger systems using edge-blending technology and rear-projection to create one uniform display. The EVOVIS tracking engine, developed by eyefactive, means the number of touch points and object recognition, movements and markers

is effectively unlimited. EVOVIS evaluates the data using image processing algorithms that can detect an unlimited amount of touches, movements and objects. The intelligent filters allow EVOVIS to automatically adapt to different and changing lighting conditions, helping to provide optimal tracking results.

www.eyefactive.com

Barco provides multitouch capability The OverView OSV-350C is part of the OverView Seamless Videowall (OSV) series, which is a range of solid-state rear-projection displays from Barco that can present a mix of data and video in high quality without seams or bezels.

This curved display range includes optional multitouch enablement, which allows several people to be active on the OSV simultaneously. A protective coating is optimised for touch applications, which also extends lifetime and allows easy cleaning. The OSV-350C is suited to a number of applications from crisis operation and planning rooms to traditional control room applications in utilities, energy and process control. The combination of large screen size (between 120in and 240in) and high resolution makes the screen ideal for multi-data collaboration. It can be installed quickly, as the screen can be rolled up and carried through standard doors. Furthermore, the solid-state light sources reduce the cost of ownership and maintenance, with lifetimes estimated up to 60,000 hours.

polytouch brings in-glass touch options Hybrid in-wall solution from RTI RTI’s KX3 is an in-wall touchpanel keypad with a 3.5in colour LCD display and five customisable hard buttons giving it the capabilities of both a touchscreen controller and a control processor within a single costeffective unit. This allows the KX3 to be used as a standalone solution for control over electronic systems or integrated as an in-wall touchpanel within a larger RTI control system. The KX3 includes features such as an on-board control processor, which offers twoway control and feedback from electronic systems via IP and RS-232, and an astronomical clock for time-based events. The versatile KX3 also has a built-in 2.4GHz ZigBee antenna for connectivity with RTI wireless remotes.

The 55 4K from polytouch is said to be the first 55in 4K all-in-one multitouch system and includes UHD picture quality and in-glass touch technology. The all-in-one device has various mounting options including wall mount, consulting table and built-in options. The 4K solution is especially suited to retail applications such as multitouch consulting table and kiosk applications. The sharp image quality and in-glass pressure detection ensure touch accuracy for the user. polytouch’s modular architecture offers two

different system versions, which includes the all-inone multitouch system with integrated panel PC, and as a multitouch display or standalone device for external sources. In addition, the customer can select between two touch technologies depending on the requirements of the application. The available touch technologies are projected capacitive (P-CAP), which provides up to 60 touch points, and InGlass, which boasts higher image quality and pressure detection.

Legamaster includes advanced IR technology Legamaster’s e-Screen STX-5800, STX-6500 and STX-8400UHD touchscreens support up to 10 touch points and deliver Full HD or UHD resolution with slim 16mm bezels. The ultraslim design allows the STX series to blend into a number of different environments. The built-in automatic brightness sensor optimises picture quality under different light conditions and also significantly reduces energy consumption.

The glass features an anti-glare coating for improved readability and comfortable touch experience. In addition, the advanced touchscreen technology, which uses infrared sensors to detect the touch point, works with any pointing device including finger, stylus or any other pen-shaped object. Both touchscreens are equipped with Legamaster’s EasyFix Mounting Solutions for peripheral equipment such as mini-PCs, soundbar, a height-adjustable system control button, whiteboard side panels (for the two larger models) and the SP3700 Active Sound System, which can all be mounted directly to the screen. The EasyFix Cable Management system ensures the quick fastening of cables, neatly routed on the back of the screen. The STX touchscreens have two USB inputs for touch, which allows connection of two sources that can both link to the touch functionality of the screen without having to swap cables.
