CEDIA research delivers value It’s been put together at a total worldwide cost of around $500,000 – but, according to Wendy Griffiths, executive director of CEDIA Region 1, research expenditure is money very well spent because of the significant value it provides to CEDIA members. CEDIA’s findings about the state of the residential systems market are being presented at two ISE sessions, the second of which takes place at the Residential Solutions Theatre (Stand: 7-W180) this afternoon at 2:00pm.

“This is the second year we’ve undertaken this research, and its value is – and increasingly will be – the trends it helps to identify,” said Griffiths. “Those can be of enormous benefit to our members both in benchmarking their business today, and in planning their business for the future. Until a couple of years ago, this data about the residential systems market just didn’t exist.” It’s not just about installers, either, a point made clearly by

Griffiths. “CEDIA members also include manufacturers and distributors, and this kind of information is incredibly valuable to them too,” she said. “It’s all about providing all our members with the tools that will help them plan their businesses.” According to both Griffiths and colleague Don Gilpin, who is executive director and chief operating officer of CEDIA, the world economy is showing positive signs – and these signs are evident in the market

research, with, for example, an increase in hiring activity. Specifically, the UK research revealed a market estimated to be worth between £840 million and £875 million in 2012; that around 1,250 companies are active in the UK residential CI sector; and that 60% of business comes from retrofit projects — with new home installations accounting for 40%. Griffiths estimates that around a quarter of the UK’s custom installers contributed to the research.

InfoComm expands reach

Cutting across the industry: Yesterday’s official opening of Integrated Systems Europe 2014 concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Participating industry heads included (left to right): Hans Bakker, CEO of Amsterdam RAI; Wendy Griffiths, executive director of CEDIA Region 1; Dave Labuskes, CEO of InfoComm International; Don Gilpin, COO of CEDIA; Kris Hogg, chairman of CEDIA Region 1; and Craig Janssen, secretary-treasurer of InfoComm International.

One of the key messages from InfoComm’s press conference yesterday was that AV is a sustainability enabler and that technologies like telepresence, UC and digital signage offer the ability to efficiently and sustainably communicate. “We need to do better sustainably. Sustainability is good for business, but only if business is part of the process so we need to engage our exhibitors,” said Allen Weidman, InfoComm sustainability officer. “Sustainability is a journey, not a destination,” he continued, referring to the association’s ambition to make its events more sustainable in partnership with its event hosts. The InfoComm-RAI partnership between was highlighted as an example of how two organisations could further each other’s sustainability goals by working closely together.

InfoComm: “We need to do better sustainably. Sustainability is good for business”

The RAI recently became the first exhibition and congress centre in Europe, and the second in the world, to receive EarthCheck Gold sustainable business tourism benchmark status. To mark its 75th year representing the commercial AV industry, InfoComm also announced plans to expand its global offerings, create new workforce development initiatives, foster relationships with allied industry groups and develop programmes to encourage industry quality.

The organisation is also expanding its team dedicated to Europe, India, Australia and Latin America. This year will also see the delivery of more programmes and websites in local languages and the expansion of the current roster of regional advisory groups to include Italy, Brazil and Colombia. InfoComm is also working with AMX to provide expanded training on networked AV systems in the UK and select cities in continental Europe and is broadening its market research offerings this year.

ISE 2014 features more than 36,000 net square metres of space for the first time

Smart market ‘there for the taking’ Smart Buildings are a market waiting to happen, and will be a great opportunity for integrators “to add value and claim the space. It’s there for the taking” as no one else has made it their own, according to InfoComm sustainability officer Allen Weidman, speaking at the ISE Commercial Solutions Theatre (8-H310). The biggest problem is the lack of standards or best practice

for smart buildings technology (SBT). “We don’t even have an accepted definition for SBT,” he said. “We really need open source in this area,” pointing to the Raspberry Pi-based Ninja Blocks project for home automation. The market could be huge. China has just started replacing 76 million analogue electricity meters with smart meters, while the US already has 46 million

smart meters (40% of households) installed, and it is calculated that SBT could save $20-25 billion in the US alone each year. Google just spent $3.2 billion on acquiring Nest, which makes smart thermostats, smoke detectors and door openers, showing that “data will be the business driver,” he said. “Sensors are the key to the future for everything, to which smartphones will be connected.”

Digital signage laid bare

Florian Rotberg: “Many projects fail if they are solely IT driven”

Integration and forward planning are the key ingredients to success for any integrator looking to enter the digital signage market, according to Invidis Consulting’s Florian Rotberg. In an introductory session for new market entrants, Rotberg

reminded the audience that digital signage is a combination of two very different worlds: IT and communications. This uneasy marriage is one that needs attention, according to Rotberg. “The smallest chunk of a digital signage project, perhaps 30%, is the technology. The largest chunk of work comes from the operational expenditure and ongoing investment that happen over the next four or five years. It’s important to get the communications department involved quickly, as many projects fail if they are solely IT driven. The ongoing management of the project is key to success.” Being familiar with all the components of the digital signage ecosystem and their availability in a particular region is crucial, according to Rotberg. Omnivision’s interactive Wayfinding will return at ISE 2015

Helping ISE visitors find their way OMNIVISION Visitors may not know it, but Omnivision Studios is one of the most high-profile vendors at this year’s ISE – not only on its own stand but on the stands of many exhibitors. Its Omnitapps multi-touch Wayfinding software also drives the touchscreen ISE information kiosks all around the showfloor, which have returned this year after a successful debut in 2013 and will also appear at ISE 2015.

The simple user interface hides a complex data set, which includes the dimensions and positions of each booth in the show, a directory of every vendor, and simple navigation instructions to help visitors navigate the challenging routes through the RAI. “Our offline Wayfinding is installed in 22 locations here at ISE,” said Omnivision CEO Alexander Aelberts. Skills needed to make lighting design shine RESIDENTIAL THEATRE “There is a lighting design-shaped hole in current AV systems training,” according to independent lighting designer Tad Trylski. “There is a lot of expertise in controlling the light, but the gap exists in the lighting design skills themselves and/or how to work with lighting designers.” Trylski is currently working with CEDIA on potential courses, and advises that to best use light, and make huge efficiency gains, “The qualitative design must come first. Where and when do you want the light, and what do you want to use it for?” The biggest mistake engineers make is to work to the plan (rather than a section), and simply place lots of downlighters lighting the floor. Instead, they should light the

floor-mounted wall washers, and by putting lighting close to the task, cut the total energy use to just 632W. “It’s slightly more difficult to install, but the savings are phenomenal and it looks a lot better,” he told visitors to the ISE Residential Theatre. Stand: 7-W180

Second Generation Smart Signage Platform. “It’s more powerful, more capable and more integrated than the First Generation,” said Long. “It’s powerful enough to support touch overlay on its own, without the need for a set-back box or PC.” Long also announced an ISE debut – a 110in ultra-high definition screen and a curved high-definition large format display, both available to view at the Samsung booth. Sunny Lee, Samsung president and CEO Europe, concluded by expressing Samsung’s desire “to drive innovation in the display business and, with the support of many great partners, keep European businesses leading the digital world.” Stand: 1-H20

Lang is listening LANG One of the more impressive sights that ISE has to offer is the videowall featured on the Lang stand. Comprising 216 modules of 1.9mm LED displays from Leyard, it is 26 square metres in area. It is, according to the company’s marketing manager Sonja Schnepper, highly representative of the way the company does business. “We took these new 1.9mm modules on board from Leyard, and initially saw them as only for fixed install applications,” she explained. “However, it became apparent from our customers that there was a real opportunity for them in the rental/staging market. Our engineering team set about developing rental frames for them – and now, it’s proving to be very popular as a ready-to-rent solution.”

Lang prides itself on listening to its customers, and coming up with responses. “We’re always searching the market for the latest and best technologies,” she continued, “and very often, our customers are first to market with exciting new products. “But,” she added, “the important thing is that we don’t just buy products. We have the expertise and the resources to be able to evaluate new products for quality and reliability – and our customers benefit from that.” Something else that benefits clients, Schnepper notes, is Lang’s absolute focus on the channel. “We don’t touch our customers’ customers,” she said. “Our reseller channel trusts us, and we never disappoint them. We believe that’s an important reason for our success.” Stand: 1-H80

4K certification programme CRESTRON A new 4K certification programme, described as an industry first, has been announced by Crestron at ISE 2014. Designed to bring 4K confidence to integrators and end users, the programme aims to ensure sources and displays meet the demands of a 4K distributed system. Crestron says it has noticed that as 4K Ultra HD source devices and displays come to market, people who specify, purchase, design and install custom AV systems are wondering which products will

work with their distributed 4K system. Under this new programme, manufacturers can submit their 4K sources and displays to Crestron to ensure that they deliver true 10 Gbit/s data rates to get the signal to its destination, interface with Crestron DigitalMedia to handle the cable lengths found in integrated AV systems and work with other 4K products in a DigitalMedia system. “Compatibility issues between different brands, new cable length limitations and mismatched resolutions all have

the potential to compromise a 4K distribution system,” said Justin Kennington, technology manager for Crestron DigitalMedia. “Crestron 4K Certification is our guarantee that sources and displays meet the demands of a 4K distributed system.” Crestron engineers in the DigitalMedia Lab test 4K products to ensure they work in a matrixswitched environment. Only those that do are awarded the Crestron 4K Certified logo. For integrators and end users, a database of 4K products will soon available at www.crestron.com/4K. Stand: 2-C24, 2-E24, 2-E36

USB ports connect to third-party control systems and devices. The hidden power behind the scenes is the Real-Time Configuration tool. An HTML5-

powered platform-independent UI allows installers to simply choose which devices they want to integrate – without worrying about all of the coding. For example, a Flick-and-Capture feature lets installers turn on the lamp (or curtains, coffee machine) that they want to integrate in a macro or scene, and program it into the automation sequence live, with no waiting or coding, while a colleague is working on programming another room or zone. “Custom installers are building and retrofitting increasingly complex systems,” said B&O category manager Brian Bjørn Hansen. “Our new BeoLink Gateway is perfectly positioned to tame the complexity and make home automation simple.” Stand 7-T190

The Discovery Zone (between Halls 8 and 9) is a hotbed of innovation. New companies are making their show debut with such products as Bluetooth audio streaming, simple digital signage solutions, and musical mirrors. UK start-up Eystones’ first product is the Sync-Box, “which provides recessed power and A/V ports to make it easy to mount a flat panel against a wall,” said director Duncan Summers. The neat, modular design, can be fitted with various connections (such as coax or Cat5/6), and only sticks out 10mm from the wall. ISE boosts AV atmosphere For this visitor from the US, the ISE show has a particularly European sensibility There are few things more intangible than ‘atmosphere’ or ‘ambiance’, and yet the sensory factors which set a tone and create an aesthetic response are actually quite concrete. The audio, visual and tactile attributes of a museum, concert venue, sporting arena, restaurant, club, boardroom or living room are the factors that make or break an experience. The AV industry is all about the creation of atmosphere, and subsequently each of its trade events provides a distinct sense of market nuance. US shows are decidedly different than the scene set by ISE at the RAI Amsterdam each year, and that contrast reflects the AV business’s task at hand – design a sensory spectacle that matches the culture, locale, lighting, climate and of course technical needs of the client. From the first moment an ISE visitor arrives at the RAI, the scene is set for Europe’s chic use of video and lighting and the

continent’s pedestrian-centric employment of digital signage. Step into the main entrance areas and dimmed lighting enhances the visual impact of edge-blended multi-platform video and lighting scenarios developed and implemented with care into the spaces. The atmosphere is sleek and glamorises an industry that usually works behind the curtain.

centre’s pleasantly refined dining options. Ultimately, the first impression one gets is that ISE is more than a trade gathering for the industry that builds ambiance, it’s an exhibition of its collective talents. Short of a smoke machine, one might feel as though one is walking onto an elaborately curated stage when searching for the location of a meeting. This makes sense

‘ISE is more than a trade gathering for the industry that builds ambiance, it’s an exhibition of its collective talents’ On the showfloor, the sound of music emanating from various audio manufacturers’ stands reflects the continental tastes of the show’s attendees. Meeting spaces have the atmosphere of European cafes and encourage conversation. Even the gustatory senses are appeased with culinary options at the

because ideally a trade show not only educates and informs attendees, it also elevates their appreciation of their role within an industry. If during the rest of the year we propagate the importance of audiovisual technology in creating an impression and imposing a lasting impact, then the times

we gather together should be a major blowout of AV glamour. Atmosphere creation and cultivation is where AV got its start – and it will gain its future foothold in that notion as well. The content creation, cloud and collaboration trends that dominated headlines in the US market at the end of 2013 will continue to push the global AV business away from hardware-centric sales towards a service provider model. Worldwide, the objective is now to create an experience rather than a collection of boxes in a closet. We are becoming a business of the ephemeral. Less hardware, more savoir faire. Those of us attending the show from the United States will no doubt find confirmation of this evolution in ISE’s bolstered emphasis on professional development at the 2014 show. New training opportunities and an increased emphasis on nonchannel attendees such as end customers, architects and

Looking behind digital signage

>>> NewsAnalysis

Despite strong presence at ISE, it can be difficult to get a top-level view of this market “Digital signage networks comprise digital displays (screens, videowalls, kiosks, and so on), digital signage software (content management systems, network management systems), as well as digital signage media players, connectivity and mounting hardware,” comments digital signage industry expert and consultant Nurlan Urazbaev. He sees those companies working alongside integrators/ installers who can supply connectivity devices and mounting hardware, content producers, audience measurement and ROI metrics tools suppliers and strategy consultants. “Suppliers that appear to be leaders in their segments include LG, NEC, Samsung, Philips for digital signage displays, Barco and Daktronics for digital billboards, and BroadSign, Four Winds Interactive or Scala for software.” Duffy Wilbert, senior vice president, member services at InfoComm International, says digital signage is a networked AV application like many

others. “Many of the companies supporting digital signage systems are the same display, audio, and switching and cabling companies the AV industry knows well. There are, however, some specialised manufacturers that support digital signage applications specifically.” Digital signage consultant Maurice Doran notes that many digital signage software

solutions, Wilbert highlights the companies that are devoted to creating compelling content and those that manage vast networks of digital signs. “And there are the AV firms that bring all these pieces together and, if they’re forward-thinking enough, marry the content with the digital signage design and integration.” Doran has also noticed an increase in the amount of

‘I expect to see more content offerings because a lot of screens have now been deployed in a variety of spaces’ companies have joined the hardware game and are using Android to address hardware limitations and costs, which in turn lowers the barriers of entry into the market for customers. “Major players here would be BroadSign, Navori’s self-hosted SaaS (software as a service) and Android solutions and Signagelive, who integrated their Android device inside the Samsung smart TV screen.” Looking beyond the components of digital signage

companies creating professionally designed content for third parties. “I expect to see more content offerings because a lot of screens have now been deployed in a variety of spaces. It’s no longer a pure advertising and marketing product, it’s becoming an information distribution system.” Wilbert says companies that differentiate themselves in the digital signage space are the ones that understand the technical similarities between

digital signage and other networked AV systems, but also recognise the client-byclient requirements of individual signage applications. “For example, the screen with built-in support for industry-standard playback devices, versus just a good, sturdy flatpanel display. Or the speaker that focuses audio on the spot from which a client wants people to experience its sign, versus a soundbar.” For Doran, the industry is broadly split between onpremise self-hosted solutions and the growing world of SaaS. It’s a fragmented market where each digital signage company has its own niche in various regions, too. “Four Winds in the US, for example, has carved a niche for itself in hospitality, rollouts in cruise ships or casinos. Others will target generic public space, retail, videowalls and so on. Very few products are seen across the board.” Urazbaev notes two industry segments: non-ad-based networks running in education, corporate communications and hospitals, and ad-based promotional content-running

Monica Heck, ISE Daily team networks in retail environments. He feels digital signage still lacks proper ROI metrics and efficient media buying tools, and cautions that the digital signage display and software markets are saturated with supply. “The abundance of technology makes it increasingly difficult for new networks to determine which product would be best for them.” Wilbert feels the most critical part of designing and deploying a new digital signage solution is the needs analysis. “The analysis should reveal if the answer is a simple, networkaddressable player attached to a consumer TV or a network of 100 commercial-grade screens across many geographical locations, physically secured and updated via a virtual LAN from a central location at corporate HQ.”

What are the hottest trends in digital signage at the moment? ‘Smart videowalls, touch applications, interactive advertising hot spots and window signage increasingly gain interest and attention. Android devices and apps have made audience familiar to touch applications and interactive advertising seems to be the dominate future trend. The continuing advancements in digital technology boost digital signage’s prospects.’ Sakis Karatolios, CEO and head of design, Unitech Systems ‘Interactivity through recognition software and campaigns that are personalised to each user are key for driving engagement to brand specific messages. These are most effective when produced on a large scale so everyone can see the visuals and have their turn being the focus through the personalised media. This could be through a photo that has been integrated into content, social media displays or taking control through a mobile device. Brands need to become more adept at delivering something of value to the consumer otherwise the engagement is pointless.’ Dana Corey, VP sales and technical operations, Prysm ‘The LED display technology has developed greatly so far, and the changes on normal displays, as well as cabinet design are becoming fewer and fewer. We need to find new applications. [Also] as an LED display business with an environmental focus, we think the government should encourage the development of LED display recycling.’ Patrick Halliwell, MD, Daktronics UK

New speaker has ‘unusually’ high dynamic range ALCONS AUDIO The CRS8 surround high-fidelity full-range loudspeaker from Alcons Audio is said to combine “an exceptional clarity and intelligibility with low distortion and an unusually high dynamic range”. Designed for the digital cinema market, the CRS8 is a two-way passive-filtered loudspeaker and features one RBN401 pro-ribbon driver for MHF and a vented reference-quality 8in mid-bass

for LF reproduction. The RBN401 driver is a proprietary-designed and multiple-patented pro-ribbon mid/high frequency transducer. Due to the low weight moving mass, Alcons Audio claims that this transducer reproduces sound with up to 90% less distortion than compression driver designs, and in addition the system has a linear response with the same tonal balance at the lowest as well as the highest SPL levels.

Furthermore, the very high 800W peak power handling of the driver offers a 1:16 RMS-to-peak power ratio, enabling true digital cinema dynamics from 1kHz to beyond 20kHz. By utilising the exact same RBN401 transducer as featured in Alcons’ pro-ribbon screen systems, a voicing matching between screen and surround system is realised, resulting in “an exceptionally wide and deep sound stage throughout the entire listening area”, according

to the company. In order to optimise the amplifier loading in immersive surround systems, the CRS8 is also available in 4 ohms impedance. Typical applications for the CRS8 include surround sound systems for premium digital cinemas, performing arts theatres, high-end home theatres, demanding screening rooms and postproduction studios, among other facilities. Technology for collaborative environments AMX ISE visitors can explore the real-world applications of AMX products in a collaborative environment. Focusing on four key room scenarios found within most commercial environments, the company’s stand gives delegates the opportunity to explore the technological solutions available to them. Commencing in the reception and working their way through a huddle room, a boardroom and a learning space, visitors can experience how AMX systems control, automate, monitor and manage resources. Among the technologies on display is Enzo, a meeting room solution that is said to make presenting and sharing information easy, quick and completely painless. Designed specifically for the collaboration space, AMX claims that Enzo is the simplest, fastest way to present and share information during a meeting or lecture, allowing users to easily access content and documents stored on USB, on the web or in the cloud. AMX is also demonstrating its Modero X Series touchpanels. With built-in web browsing and document viewing capabilities, the panels are designed to simplify meeting room technology by eliminating the need for, and cost of, a standalone meeting room PC. In addition, application support allows integrators to extend the functionality of the touch panel beyond simply a control surface. On show is the latest addition to the Modero touchpanel family, the new Modero S Series, which is said to be ideally suited for more cost-sensitive installations and room scheduling applications. Battle of the screens DNP DENMARK AS The differences between conventional white projection screens and optical projection screens are being highlighted on the dnp denmark stand throughout ISE 2014. Two versions of the dnp Supernova Blade Screen, equipped with different screen materials, are going up against a generic white projection screen in high ambient light conditions showing presentations with sharp images and detailed data. In a bid to level the playing field, dnp will set up a realistic

conference room environment with controllable light levels. The company says all comparisons will be made using the same projector and the same image sources. The 20-minute shootouts will take place twice per day throughout the show, at 10:00 and 15:00. Other highlights of the dnp stand are new and improved versions of the Supernova STS Screen and the dnp InviziBezel LCD-cover. Supernova STS is aimed at Ultra Short Throw projectors and provides an alternative to flat panels in the 80-100in range. The latest

model features improved viewing angles. Visitors can also experience a redesigned version of the dnp InviziBezel, a front cover for LCD panels that optically conceals the bezel ‘gap’ between neighbouring LCD panels. Version 2.0 is still in prototype form and is said to provide viewers with a near-seamless experience even from wider viewing angles. A3 Pro easier to maintain SHENZHEN ABSEN The A3 Pro is a 3.9mm pixel pitch LED display from Absen, which last year was at the heart of a 63.75sqm videowall installed at the Atlantis Hotel in Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. In addition, the screen – which

20 thedaily 2014

is designed for indoor stage, TV station, concert, theme park and exhibition use – formed the backdrop at the Moscow World Trade Centre when Russian president Vladimir Putin held his first major press conference since returning to office. Brightness of the panels is

rated at equal to or greater than 1,200 nits, and viewing angle at 140º on either axis. The A3 Pro is IP40/IP21-rated and has an average power consumption of 180W/sqm. A magnetic system and modular power supply are said to enable easier maintenance, while weight of

just 9.2kg is claimed to facilitate simpler installation. Absen says that a special connector design enables inter-screen gaps to be minimised, helping to create a single, seamless image. The displays have an intelligent control system for adaptive brightness and colour

temperature control based on the ambient lighting. Absen says that the screen is particularly effective in low brightness where its high refresh rate means that greyscale performance is not compromised. Stand: 11-M50

Transparently clear: CDS displays are ideal for adding high-end graphics to real objects

World’s largest transparent display launched CRYSTAL DISPLAY SYSTEMS At 84in, the brand new 4K Transparent Display panel produced by Crystal Display Systems is claimed to be the world’s largest. The screen should “open up many more applications for retail, etc, where certain products, such as full mannequins for designer

clothes, could not be used before,” said CDS MD, Chris Bartram. Its 3840 x 2160 resolution “means high-end graphics can be shown which were previously not available in transparent displays” – the largest was its 70in/1920 x 1080 screen. It is based on a Sharp 4K panel and has USB, VGA and two HDMI inputs. A standard

multi-touch IR touchscreen is available with no development or tooling charge. Transparent displays are being used for retail, exhibition and fashion, and Bartram believes the new 4K panel will “offer an excellent alternative to 3D and Holographic displays with greater flexibility in design and be more cost-effective”. In which areas can the professional AV/electronic systems world benefit most from developments in consumer electronics?

‘Convergence is happening. It is a fact. The line between consumer and professional has become blurred. This is advantageous for Sony as we sit on both sides of the divide. ‘The volumes that exist on the consumer side of our business create economies of scale that can be applied to the professional side. For example, the consumer television side of our business significantly supports the professional market as components, in this case panels, can be shared. ‘The quality we can give to consumers is now very close to what we provide to businesses. The two worlds are becoming more and more integrated.’ Damien Weissenburger, head of display solutions, Sony Europe

‘Over the next 12 months, consumer awareness of Ultra-HD will increase, resulting in expectations and demands for the installation and integration of these devices into AV projects. Also, a greater number of more sophisticated DIY devices are coming onto the market (intelligent thermostats, etc), providing consumers with opportunities to experience the lifestyle benefits of integrated technology and the aspiration to have more integrated systems. With the adoption of tablet-style devices and the consumer’s ability to pursue interoperability through these, they are gaining a better insight into how it can enhance their lifestyle.’ Wendy Griffiths, executive director, CEDIA

Line Source speakers for home cinemas WISDOM AUDIO Targeting behind-screen installations in mid to large high-end private theatres are Wisdom Audio’s new stackable Line Source speakers, the LS4i and LS3i, which benefit from newly developed high-efficiency, ultra-high output, large-scale planar modules. Cone and dome audiophile speakers can’t deliver the necessary sound pressure level for larger theatres, while compression horns sacrifice both resolution and intelligibility, but Wisdom claims that planar magnetics can deliver the best of both worlds – without compromise. Three stated advantages of Line Source speakers are better clarity, more power over distance and higher sensory envelopment, which together create a significantly larger sweet spot within the seating area. “Custom installers, designers and acousticians need to hear how compelling a multichannel system with planar magnetic line sources really is for medium- to largescale private cinemas,” said Wisdom’s chief business development officer, Luc Guillaume. POLYMEDIA First-time ISE show exhibitor Polymedia has developed Polywall, software for data visualisation management in control rooms and command centres. It allows users to control several displays and videowalls from a single cross-platform user interface, working with pre-loaded or online-created scenarios for complex events. Polywall creates an additional abstraction layer between user and complex AV and IT technologies, allowing the user to focus on any problems and not on the technology. Besides simplifying data visualisation process management, it is also claimed to make more effective use of control room resources and to offer lower deployment costs than a fully hardware-based system would allow. “Polywall is made so as to allow users and operators of control centres not to waste their resources on working with

In today’s fast-paced and visually-based world, switching through black just doesn’t cut it

during a switch. A transition through black looks sub-standard and is not a professional approach. It certainly doesn’t impress the audience. Today there are more choices than ever for ‘presentation switching’ devices, but we mustn’t forget the primary goal of the device: to achieve flawless, visually stunning presentations without distraction. Analog Way leads the field with undeniably

amazing image quality, low latency and true seamless transitions. As the first pioneer of seamless switching, Analog Way has been on the cutting edge of the technology since 1997. It is clear that superior engineering is required to provide the desired seamless operation coupled with user-friendly interfaces. Audiences demand nothing less. This is true in

both the rental and staging market as well as integration. Therefore Analog Way continues to provide true seamless switching on all its models in order to deliver what your presentations require. The LiveCore and Midra series of mixers and seamless switchers are the latest in our proud lineage of benchmark-setting seamless switchers. Stand: 11-F58

Casio has introduced a new Dual Projection System that is bright enough to be used in well-lit spaces. The XJ-SK600 combines two projectors (projecting the same image) with a Geometric Correction Box and a sturdy, black stacking box, which acts as a casing. The result, says Casio, is a strong light output of up to 6,000 ANSI lumens from a laser and LED hybrid light source. The correction software synchronises the two overlapping images to produce a distortion-free image. The image is claimed to remain bright and clear, even on projection surfaces with a screen size of up to 7.5m (300in). The light source promises a long service life as the mercuryfree laser and LED hybrid can be used for up to 20,000 hours, making the DLP 1,280 x 800 (WXGA) projectors “eminently suitable for 24-hour use”. Where

power is turned off overnight, the projector does not need to be shut down separately as it does not require a cooldown phase. When it is switched back on it is ready to use in just five seconds. The Geometric Correction Box (YA-S10) smooths out uneven surfaces with ease. Even the slightest distortions can be levelled out by pressing a button on the remote control. Projections on otherwise tricky canvases, such as warped screens or roundedcolumns, are no problem. Stand: 4-R56

Knowing what you know now about today’s technology, what would you do differently if you could go back in time to 2004, when ISE started? ‘Technology has advanced so rapidly since 2004, I think that it has taken many by surprise. Integration and convergence were buzzwords for many years, but I think much of the industry was caught offguard when it suddenly became real. Were I to go back in time, I think the industry would have been well-served to begin to develop new skill sets, such as IT skills, earlier and begin to prepare itself more actively for the newly connected world that we are in today.’ Ethan Wetzell, platform strategist, Bosch Communications Systems

‘I would certainly be less in thrall to the PC. Back in 2004 the PC was the standard platform for signage. Our founder and current chairman, Anthony Wood, saw the potential of a dedicated solid state platform, and created that within Roku in the first instance. He showed me what he was doing in 2009 and offered me the chance to set up BrightSign as an independent business. We now offer a solid state player that matches the PC in nearly every respect and has captured 43% of the world player market.’ Jeff Hastings, CEO, BrightSign

‘I would have strongly supported making our product portfolio more modular slightly earlier than we did, although on the whole we can be very satisfied with what was achieved within the last 10 years. We were very passionate about the possibilities of working with media content in real-time then, and we still have the same passion plus valuable experience today!’ Hans Christian Stucken, marketing & communications director, coolux

‘Back in 2004 we did not see the financial crisis coming yet, but if we had known about it we would not have changed anything. Our corporate philosophy is to carefully treat our company’s assets, which are more than just money. Of course we had some drawbacks in turnover during the crisis but this helped us to focus on things we needed to do anyway and first of all invest in the development of new products.’ Tobias Stumpfl, commercial director, AV Stumpfl

‘We would have supported the show even more by renting a larger stand from the start. The first show of anything is always quite a gamble for a manufacturer. But even from the very start you could see the great potential that the show had to offer.’ Tom Van de Sande, marketing manager, Audac ‘I’d invent and patent the iPad.’ Tim Burnham, president, Tempest

distributor, just like the video multiplexer, video amplifier and video distributor. The product is for range extension and increasing the number of devices. In addition, the DCS repeater amplifies the

audio and data signals of the door communication system in both directions, as well as the outgoing video signal, which allows both the cable length and the number of devices in a door intercom to be doubled.

According to Gira, this feature-set makes the DCS repeater the ideal solution for large buildings with an abundance of residential units. It expands the range of the audio signal to 1.2km (for a total cable

length of 4.8km for the door communication system) and the video signal to 600m (for a total cable length of 1.2km). The Gira DCS repeater is available now. Stand: 7-P180

4K: on its way Inevitably, any discussion about 4K or Ultra HD resolution tends to focus on the remarkable detail and realism that 4K screens bring to images. But are users – commercial or consumer – now clamouring for that level of detail? And if they are, how deliverable is it?

>>NewsAnalysis

“It seems to me that there are only two justifications for 4K,” opines Robert Simpson, founder director of Electrosonic and returning to ISE again for his highly respected overview of the displays industry. “The first is when more pixels are needed simply to avoid a situation where pixels become visible. The second is when the display is required to display images which themselves have 4K content. This can mean either that the content is genuinely 4K or that the display is being called on to display multiple ‘2K’ images.” “As much as 4K has been the subject of much interest and excitement in our industry lately, we would be happier to see more projects actually implementing 4K in practice,” says Neta Lempert, vice president, digital business development at Kramer Electronics, who is presenting an InfoComm session at ISE 2014. “However, we’re already shipping 4K products, and we have no doubt that it's just a matter of time until 4K becomes an essential, mandatory demand in many installations.” “Deployment of 4K as a system from content through to display will take some time,” adds David Meyer, managing director of Kordz, whose ISE CEDIA session looks at 4K compatibility and design. “Think back to the first few years of 1080p, when the only source was upscaled DVDs. 4K is currently in that equivalent phase of infancy. Display and

Look out for the first signal management products supporting 4K at ISE 2014

processing technologies have evolved to the point that 4K can already deliver greater relative benefit than did 1080p prior to native source content being available.” But while it’s 4K screens that are grabbing the attention, it’s easy to overlook the fact that for those screens to succeed, they need appropriate content – and a realistic way of delivering that content. It’s all about the infrastructure. “There's a lot to be done,” believes Bob Raikes, managing director of display market researcher Meko and

editor of Display Monitor. “One of the critical elements is the type of codec needed to compress 4K content to a level that is compatible with the limits of current systems. And then the decompressing chips at the playout end need to be implemented and available at reasonable prices.” “It seems that we are still short on content when it comes to 4K,” says Meyer. “When this content becomes more common, users will really be able to enjoy the benefits of high resolution, and then spending money on 4K devices will be justified.”

A mount for all seasons EDBAK Mounting solutions for LCD/LED screens and projectors are the speciality of exhibitor EDBAK. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Piotrowice near Lublin, Poland, EDBAK produces ceiling and wall brackets, desk monitor mounts, projector and iPad mounts, stands, trolleys and videowall mounting systems. EDBAK also offers products for digital signage applications, such as outdoor and indoor Infokiosks and enclosures, that are designed and customised according to customers’ requirements. They are typically deployed in industrial and professional environments such as shopping malls, hotels,

airports, railway stations, subways, schools and other public places. Typical of EDBAK’s range are its external enclosures for LED/LCD screens capable of handling seven sizes of screen from 32in to 70in. They feature a robust metal housing with antiglare, vandal-proof glass, an

internal ventilation system and simple maintenance. Standard colours are either black or silver. EDBAK also offers a variety of videowall mounting solutions. As well as traditional wall mounts, the company can offer mobile, freestanding, columnar, ceilingmount and modular options. Stand: 1-N70

Ian McMurray, ISE Daily team The majority of commentators agree with Neta Lempert that the success of 4K is a foregone conclusion. The question is only: how fast will it move? What can ISE 2014 tell us in terms of the extent to which that infrastructure will begin to fall into place – given that Bob Raikes, for example, expects to see more 4K displays at the show than last year, not least because they are potentially significantly more profitable for display manufacturers? David Meyer is looking for what he describes as “systemic advancement” – the ancillary devices to make 4K systems possible such as cables, extenders, switches, splitters and AVRs. He won’t be disappointed, it seems. Kramer is launching its new line of HDBaseT and fibre range extenders, as well as HDMI distribution amplifiers and boardroom solutions, all of which support 4K, and Neta Lempert expects other vendors to announce developments in this area too. “Without a doubt, we will witness the first signal management products, such as video routers and splitters supporting 4K, on the showfloor this year,” says Lempert, who is hoping to see the first 4K media players. 4K is unquestionably coming. ISE 2014, it is clear, will provide visitors with a unique insight into when it is likely to arrive as a truly deployable technology.

Amplifier range, app upgraded ARTSOUND The range of mixing amplifiers produced by Artsound has been expanded with a larger version, the Artsound MX-500S, which is an integrated 100V mixing amplifier with a 500W capacity. At the touch of a button, five volume zones can be created, as well as individual tone control for each zone. In addition, this amplifier has a selective call-up capability. The PM-2S01 is now a 10channel preamplifier whose signals can be transmitted to two zones. It has individual volume control (per channel) and is said to be ideal for connecting several microphones or sources. Also being showcased is the PR-1240, a 240W power amplifier which, says Artsound, is suitable for users wishing to expand

four-channel amplifiers to five or six zones for example. Artsound is also highlighting its updated app, which is available free for iOS or Android, and which the company says makes the hand-held transmitter completely surplus to requirements – to the point where the company no longer ships one. The new app enables the user to operate up to eight zones, the built-in tuners and up to three MP3 streams. It can also control external sources, such as a Bluetooth or Airplay module, and enables the selection of tracks, albums or artists – even from a network hard-disk. The app can be combined with Spotify/internet radio and is now available in Dutch, French and English. Stand: 1-P110

Third generation of Confidea TELEVIC CONFERENCE

AVEX’s Quarta integrates AV functionality into a table

Boost meeting room efficiency AVEX More effective meetings with the help of modern technology – that’s the idea behind Quarta, which exhibitor AVEX is showcasing on its ISE 2014 stand. The Quarta meeting table is said to offer a combination of fully integrated audiovisual facilities, maximum comfort and optimum ease of use, among other features.

At the heart of the table are flat screens recessed under clear-vision toughened glass, which makes sharing presentations and documents easy. This arrangement, notes the company, also allows participants in the meeting to maintain eye contact with each other because they no longer have to turn to face a single central screen on a wall – ensuring increased interaction, improved meeting dynamics and

enhanced efficiency. The Quarta table can be equipped with a videoconferencing system, and also includes an audio system, laptop connectivity and a touchpanel that allows control of screens, sound level, lighting, climate and other functions. AVEX says that it is well aware that organisations have specific requirements when it comes to business accommodation, which means that not all meeting

environments are the same. The Quarta range provides different versions in terms of size, finish and audiovisual components, and allows companies to choose the Quarta table which best suits their specific operational requirements. Quarta tables are co-produced by two Dutch companies – AVEX and Exclusive Products – and are manufactured in the Netherlands. Stand: 1-F69

Brady O Bruce, vice president marketing & strategic alliances, Jupiter Systems

Real work, real time Seeing the big picture today and tomorrow is going to require an acute focus on distribution and collaboration, says Jupiter Systems’ Brady O Bruce This year heralds a change for InfoComm members that is tectonic in its reach and implications. The display wall industry has evolved because customer requirements have evolved. Distribution and collaboration are in; isolation and disconnected islands of information are out. It has been said that “seeing the big picture” often requires “seeing a big picture”. Our industry has a long and impressive history of providing control rooms that allow business and public sector managers to gather in front of a

display wall, see the same thing at the same time, develop a common operating picture, manage operations, and respond quickly to emerging situations. But what about managers, consultants and experts who need to see the same things, but are not in the control room? What about working with the managers who are in the facilities depicted on the control room screens? Information yields value when it is shared. Shared information is most valuable when the right people can work together with it. All of the video and other visual

‘Information yields value when it is shared. Shared information is most valuable when the right people can work together with it’

information that is made available to the managers in the control room should also be made available to managers who find themselves between flights at the airport, in their homes, in a hotel room 6,000 miles from HQ, on the street, in a branch office – wherever they happen to be and on whatever device they have in front of them. Laptops, smartphones, tablets, and even other display walls... Better still, these far-flung colleagues need to collaborate. By which I mean really collaborate, not just co-view. They need to be able to draw

directly on the screen, on top of live video, with a finger or a mouse, and draw the attention of distant experts to the area of interest. A whiteboard and a chat window should be available. Real work in real time is the goal – anywhere and at any time. Jupiter Systems has delivered that with Canvas, our collaborative visualisation product. We think that’s where the world is headed and where this industry will go. The future looks pretty good from here. Stand: 2-A45

The technology world is becoming increasingly IP- and network-based. What are the main challenges here for your market sector? ‘The biggest challenge is that there continues to be a strong divide between IT and AV. Some people in our industry get it; others are hugely dependent on external contractors to fill the knowledge void. The entire industry has to start facing the fact that they are in the networking business and we should be moving more towards IT/AV convergence.’ Robin van Meeuwen, VP, Crestron International

‘The rapid change in networked visualisation technology requires new skills from everyone in the industry chain: manufacturers, resellers, integrators, consultants but also end-users. We started delivering network-based solutions that are easy to use, install and manage several years ago, and one of the challenges of this evolution is that it requires the right training and up-to-date know-how.’ Fredrik Sjostedt, VP corporate marketing, Barco

‘Obviously the greatest challenge (or threat) is safety and security. With the ease of installation and use of such systems we do all forget about security and reliability. The main challenge in the (digital) AV world still is compatibility of different devices, which is what we are addressing with a dedicated AV network protocol that unifies the communication within AV devices – focusing on reliability.’ Tobias Stumpfl, commercial director, AV Stumpfl

A new screen material is being introduced at ISE 2014, embedded with nano mirrors and light absorbing particles to allow a greater than 4K image to shine in less than perfect lighting conditions. The Ambient Visionaire screen material additionally features a light absorption layer and is intended for areas with more light, according to developer Screen Excellence. The new material is being demonstrated alongside Enlightor 4K, the acoustically transparent (AT) projection surface used in the company's True Aspect Masking (TAM) product line. Screen Excellence claims that the acoustic response of Enlightor 4K provides a nearly constant attenuation of less than 2dB across the entire audio spectrum, without altering the tonal balance. According to the company, sound absorption in the woven material occurs without

scattering, so the time domain response and the directivity of the loudspeaker behind it remain the same. This allows the sound to travel directly through the screen with very little attenuation. To demonstrate their highresolution capabilities the fabrics are on show on the Screen Excellence stand displaying images from a Sony 4K Home Cinema projector. Both Ambient Visionaire and Enlightor 4K fabrics will handle images beyond 4K, so providing the user with a future-proof screen, according to the company. Raising awareness of KVM GUNTERMANN & DRUNCK According to the German manufacturer Guntermann & Drunck, KVM equipment makes it easy to separate humans and technology. KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) devices can be easily installed via plug-and-play, and in addition, KVM products use the existing cable infrastructure. KVM transmission, says the company, leads to crystal clear images, and even though computers are removed from workstations, they work without any network or any loss of quality or keyboard/mouse latencies, thereby benefiting the user’s hand-eye coordination. Furthermore, this means service teams are able to maintain any devices stored in equipment rooms without disturbing employees working in the control room. Since its inception, Guntermann & Drunck has been focused on distributing, extending and switching these signals. Customers can now select and combine KVM equipment fitting their requirements and use it with their existing cable infrastructure, without the need for a customised solution to transmit and/or extend signals. >>Today’s InfoComm

10:00 - 11:00 Are We REALLY OK with 4K? Room D203 Speaker: Neta Lempert, VP digital business development, Kramer Electronics

As 4K is becoming less of a buzzword and more a familiar term, not only to AV professionals but also to the general population, it is becoming clear that we need to start preparing for the day when 4K installations are actually happening. What is meant by the term 4K and what does it take to have a fully functional, properly installed 4K system? This presentation will review the 4K x 2K video signal which was fully defined by the HDMI1.4 standard. We will discuss who is already using 4K systems and how these systems are installed, who will start using such systems in the near future and what are the challenges lying ahead.

10:00 - 11:00 BYOT – Practical Approaches to Systems Operability in Collaborative Active Learning Environments Room D301 Speaker: Peter Dugas, senior design engineer & principal, TSAV Operability challenges related to students using their own devices in learning environments and ways to overcome them. An examination and discussion of BYOT in classrooms and specific challenges with BYOT in active learning spaces. Active learning spaces include TEAL and Scale-Up classrooms which facilitate problem based and project based learning and allow for collaboration and content sharing between students and instructors. An objective analysis of the current hardware and software solutions on the market to meet the challenges associated with BYOT in collaborative learning environments.

10:00 - 11:00 Networking Technology Essentials for AV Professionals Room D204 Speaker: Bill Thomas, staff instructor, InfoComm International Pick up some knowledge which is needed by every AV professional working across the increasingly blurred boundaries of IT networking and AV, with content taken from InfoComm’s Networking Technology course. Topics covered will include how data is encoded and transported, common hardware types and their applications, hardware and network addressing, network security, and some common troubleshooting tools and tips. This is real world knowledge for those just starting off with networking, and consolidation for those who are working with it but need some revision or reinforcement of the fundamentals.

11:30 - 12:30 BIM is on Your Doorstep Now! What You Need to Do to Stay in the Game Room D204 Speaker: Jon Melchin, director, Architectural Business Development, FSR, Inc This presentation will feature a look into Building Information Modeling - a 3D design, modeling and simulation technology that has changed the way that architecture is practiced. Building Information Modeling, or BIM, is more than just a 3D representation of the physical (products) and functional characteristics of a structure; it is a shared knowledge resource. The “I” in BIM, involves

66 thedaily 2014

everybody in the design process, including architects, interiors people, engineers, EC’s, GC’s, the facility owner, and vendors, such as audiovisual consultants and AV systems integrators. BIM invites tight design discussions and for AV professionals, this presents a tremendous opportunity to get involved on the ground level of a project. This will be discussed, as well as other benefits of BIM to AV integration. BIM facilitates clash detection, including space and system-routing conflicts, clear cable pathways, and camera and projector sightlines that are visible within the 3D model. These factors, along with opportunities for AV manufacturers to get involved with BIM object creation will be covered in the presentation. In the final portion of the presentation, a brief case study will be discussed pertaining to the construction of a BIMdesigned project.

and implementation of AV systems, such as integrating old analogue sources and displays; integrating new technology such as 3D video and 4K resolutions; varying infrastructure and connectivity such as HDBaseT, multimode and single mode fibre, Thunderbolt and streaming media; managing data such as CEC, EDID and HDCP; understanding how scalers affect switching speed and image quality; and addressing the often overlooked digital audio. Keep up with the rapidly changing digital landscape so you can provide the most reliable and consistent system performance, and the best support.

13:00 - 14:00 Audio Networking and Control – What Do We Really Need? Room D204 Speaker: Roland Hemming, consultant, RH Consulting

Without effective AV technology, active learning environments will struggle to provide students with the engaging and challenging academic experience that these recent pedagogical developments have been developed to facilitate. AV technologists, Learning Spaces Managers and University Pro Vice-Chancellors responsible for Learning and Teaching Strategies need to have more awareness of what can be achieved from new learning spaces, and how distributed AV solutions are an integral part of the requirement.

The audio industry has had a plethora of networking and control standards and despite some great initiatives, still has no industry-wide means of getting all our equipment to work together. Perhaps the real problem is not one of agreeing standards, but the fact that we haven't properly worked out what we really need to do. Digital Audio has come a long way. We have the possibility of networking digital audio and video using AVB and the ability to have different audio networks together using AES67. Meanwhile, the OCA is hard at work establishing a means of audio equipment to talk to each other. But does any of this actually help us? Will these technologies really make things easier for us to manage audio projects and events? What's missing? Discover the real concerns and needs of audio professionals and what is required to make audio work better with video and other technologies.

The SONORA system – a PA/VA solution which is said to be ideal for venues with big amplification zones such as airports, shopping malls, metro networks and sport centres – is being demonstrated by LDA Audio Tech at ISE 2014. SONORA is a networked system that uses standard Ethernet networks which save installation efforts, time and cost, and is based on CobraNet technology. Both the multichannel audio matrix system ZES and the STV amplifiers from the SONORA product family have integrated DSP and balanced inputs/ outputs which offer high audio quality.

According to LDA, SONORA delivers crystal clear audio that surpasses what is normally achieved in most concert halls. It also provides a secure and controlled voice evacuation in emergency situations; the system integrates a Line Supervisor and an Emergency Control Unit which, the company claims, “guarantees the system’s redundancy and the continuous functioning of the voice alarm evacuation system”. Furthermore, SONORA can be monitored and controlled in the Cloud through the software SIME that is also available for demos on the LDA stand. Stand: 7-N180

SOUNDTUBE Unique custom finish options have been added to SoundTube’s three-way columnar line array featuring the LA880i and LA808i LFDE products. The LA880i is said to provide a very short near-field extent and robust far-field performance. Utilising an advanced LAPS (Line Array – Point Source) design, nearfield to far-field transition occurs at only three metres from the speaker. Beyond this distance, the speaker’s directivity is a constant 40º x 120º and the frequency response remains consistent throughout the coverage area. Featuring eight 4.5in woofers, eight 2in midrange drivers and one 2.5in planar magnetics (ribbon) high-frequency driver for extremely smooth high-frequency response, SoundTube says that the LA880i achieves superb coverage in a compact enclosure. Numerous mounting options allow the use of the LA880i on walls, near ceilings, on poles, or suspended via cables (flown). For spaces with high RT, extra low frequency directivity can be achieved by adding the LA808i

LFDE (Low Frequency Directivity Element). This unit is installed either above or below the LA880i to enhance the directivity of low frequencies by up to an octave lower than with the LA880i alone. Standard finishes for the LA Series are black and white (paintable). Partnering with sister company Induction Dynamics, SoundTube now offers the line array products with custom paint finishes or wood grain veneers. “Not only does our line array provide superior directivity and audio quality performance, we are the only commercial manufacturer that can supply a product of this type with custom finishes,” said Duke Ducoff, VP of sales for MSE Audio, parent of SoundTube. “Large open areas such as indoor attractions, houses of worship, transportation platforms and shopping centres can now have the advantages of a line array with an appearance that blends in with virtually any décor.” Stand: 11-C84

One speaker replaces two JBL (HARMAN)

JBL’s CWT128 with Crossfired Waveguide Technology

Incorporating an all-new design that is said to deliver extremely wide-angle coverage, the CWT128 loudspeaker from Harman’s JBL Professional features JBL’s CWT Crossfired Waveguide Technology, designed to provide seamless horizontal coverage across a full 160°. The CWT128’s relatively compact size and small footprint (31.94in H x 10.22in W x 11.84in D) take up about a third of the footprint of two speakers arranged side by side. The CWT128 is said to be ideal for performance spaces, houses of

worship, auditoriums, transportation facilities, theme parks, and other indoor and outdoor applications. Because one speaker can be used instead of two, installation costs can be lowered by reducing the number of cabinets, cabling, labour and other costs. JBL’s Crossfired Waveguide Technology essentially splits the waveguide in half and utilises two compression drivers loaded in different directions. The waveguide is claimed to provide exceptional off-axis response and, by eliminating multiple sets of speakers that interfere with each other, overall fidelity is said

to be greatly improved and intelligibility increased. The CWT128 employs two of JBL’s 2408H-1 1in neodymiummagnet compression drivers. A pair of 8in JBL SFG (Symmetrical Field Geometry) low-frequency drivers each features a copper-clad aluminium edge-wound 2.5in voice coil and copper-clad pole piece that, says Harman, improves performance by reducing voice coil inductance and distortion for smoother response, extended bass and extremely low distortion. The multi-ply enclosures offer multiple mounting options and

feature JBL’s textured DuraFlex finish and a powder-coated steel grille backed by acoustically transparent foam. Four M10 attachment points are built in across the top and sides, while four M8 points on the rear panel accept OmniMount wall-mount brackets. The CWT128 includes covered barrier strip speaker terminals and an internal passive network and 110W 70/100V transformer. Various optional finishes are available, including white. Users can also select JBL’s WRC and WRX weather-resistant versions. Stand: 1-N34

In your opinion, what is the best thing about the ISE show? It gives us insight and feedback from our EU regional distributors, system integrators and designers, who all have rich experiences in real application sites. It leads us to figure out the market potential and customer needs of new products and the effectiveness of their features. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? We need to design fibre optic AV extenders in types of cables or small modules to keep the highest signal integrity in data transmission for leadingedge displays or video sources, especially 4K resolutions. We must strive to integrate all digital data into [fewer] data streams, as well as to invent a compact fibre optic module. We’ve kept our eyes on the quality of data compression for IP-based transmission too.

‘ISE leads us to figure out the market potential and customer needs of new products’ Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE 2014? We exhibit and demonstrate many new leading-edge fibre optic AV extenders for HDMI, DisplayPort and Dual Link DVI to accommodate the highest data bandwidth for video, even covering 4K resolution. Such products are designed to be all fibredetachable with industrial standard connectors for ease of installation as well as to be the smallest module in the industry. Stand: 4-U20

It’s very interesting to see these giant companies working together to create new platforms, to integrate the ‘internet of things’ with new technology, even in the homes of people. And it has immediate interest for us as well.” Jan Prius, CEO, Sightcorp

“This is my first time at ISE. The smart building approach has become very popular in my region right now. And we do have a few projects ongoing, so we will be able to have showcases for smart buildings. It’s a good opportunity to meet new people and find partners and do some collaboration.” Kamilla Shakbazov, regional business development manager, CDC Turkey

Interactive projector aims for growth SMART TECHNOLOGIES Smart Technologies’, new LightRaise 60wi2 interactive projector aimed at enterprise users can handle four touches at once, allowing two users to gesture on the display simultaneously. “It is enabling inspired collaboration and it’s extending our product range of interactive whiteboards and flat panels,” said Tobias Windbrake, business development manager.
