So much more than an exhibition New features and attractions added as ISE 2014 continues to set the agenda for the industry in Amsterdam
A WEALTH of new events, features and attractions, both on and off the showfloor, is promised at ISE 2014 – in many cases extending beyond the three-day span of the exhibition. On Monday 3 February, the Smart Building Conference returns to the Amsterdam RAI after its successful launch a year ago – and a second event in London last October. The conference will explore the opportunities afforded by the smart building market in both commercial and residential buildings, and foster co-operation and understanding between the AV integrator community and other stakeholders in the built environment. (Turn to page 16 for our preview.) Smart buildings also have relevance to the Opening Keynote
Address of ISE 2014, which takes place at 6:00pm on the Monday. Dr Dirk Schlesinger, global lead for manufacturing industries at Cisco Consulting Services will give an exclusive insight into a new crossindustry initiative involving Cisco,
“The initiatives we are putting in place... will do even more to make this year's show absolutely unmissable” ABB, Bosch and LG, which offers a common standard for data exchange across multiple appliances and disciplines. (Find out more on page 15.) Also on the Monday is AudioForum, a conference
organised by Italian publication Connessioni. Building on the success of a recent event in Milan, the conference will explore the world of audio transport protocols – featuring presentations by technology experts and practitioners. (We preview AudioForum on page 22.) Another new conference at ISE 2014 is the Sport Facility Integration Summit, which takes place on the afternoon of Wednesday 5 February. Organised by SVG Europe – the European arm of The Sports Video Group is a trade association devoted to the creation, production and distribution of sports content – the Summit will look at the technologies and trends related to AV integration in sports facilities. Through panel sessions and case study presentations, the event will explore what makes the difference between a good fan experience and a great one. (The SFIS is previewed on page 38.) Two new features of ISE 2014 address less technologically based issues – finance and distribution. Investor Showcase (see page 20) is an invitation-only event that gives manufacturers the opportunity to pitch their businesses to private equity companies and other potential sources of funding. M2D (Manufacturers to Distributors), meanwhile, will use digital signage in high-traffic areas of the Amsterdam RAI to highlight
exhibitors that are looking for new distribution partners in particular territories (see page 36). Professional Development has a new focus at ISE this year, with InfoComm International – one of the two industry associations behind ISE – launching a new voucher scheme for its education sessions. Everyone attending the show will receive vouchers to attend two sessions free of charge, and further vouchers may be purchased at affordable rates. CEDIA, ISE’s other industry association owner, alongside its roster of education sessions, is also running THX calibration training from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 February in Amsterdam. (Our Professional Development listings begin on page 44.) In addition,
manufacturers are presenting a range of informative seminars in two ISE Theatres, located on the showfloor. As you can read on page 41, these have been designed to stimulate the creativity of attendees by making them consider some emerging AV technologies. “Our bigger-than-ever showfloor and record number of exhibitors will themselves make ISE 2014 unique,” said Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events. “But our renewed emphasis on Professional Development, our extended pre-show programme and the initiatives we are putting in place to enhance the visitor experience will do even more to make this year's show absolutely unmissable.”
BOOK NOW TO GET THE BEST HOTEL RATES ISE’s official partner RAI Hotel & Travel Service, The RAI Hotel & Travel Service has made special rates available for rooms during ISE 2014. The organisation has negotiated the best possible prices for the duration of the exhibition, so that attendees who book via the link on the show website can expect savings of around 10% on normal room rents. A wide range of hotel types are covered, from budgetconscious 2-star to luxurious 5-star. Turn to page 43 for more details.

Slate rejects 65% of light SCREEN INNOVATIONS HISTORICALLY, home theatre using projection was a lights-off, curtains-drawn affair. So seven years ago, Screen Innovations developed Black Diamond – a projection screen material that rejects 85% of ambient light. According to the company’s president, Ryan Gustafson, Black Diamond is accepted as the best ambient light screen money can buy – although he acknowledges that it doesn’t come cheap. His company has therefore spent the last two years developing a screen that comes close to the light rejection capabilities of Black Diamond, but at a significantly lower price point. The result is the Slate, which makes its European debut at ISE 2014. According to Screen Innovations, the Slate rejects 65% of ambient light – compared with the 10-20% rejected by a typical white or grey screen. “Slate replaces the need to settle for a substandard screen in a family room setting,” says Gustafson. “We are very excited

switchers, ranging from the 8X8 model to the newest 128X128 edition, are ready for 4K support. The HD-EXT3-C and HD-EXT4C support 4K resolution content and can transmit HDMI long distance via HDBaseT using standard CAT5e/UTP cable. Both the HD-EXT3-C and HD-EXT4-C support 4K signals and extend
uncompressed, HDCP-protected HDMI content up to 100m via HDBaseT without signal degradation. Transmitters, available with black or white faceplates, can either be mounted in a single gang wall box or can be rack-mounted. “From the content side, 4K is quickly taking a foothold in the

in custom widths to match the length of any TV. The 3-channels-in-1 speaker system measures only 4cm deep by 8.25cm high and is available in custom widths. The lacklustre sound of some of today’s ultrathin TVs was the main inspiration behind the development of the soundbar, which Triad Speakers believes will maintain the sleek look of the display and offer superb performance.
“While there are other manufacturers that market thin soundbars, the sound has typically taken a back seat to size,” said director of international sales Mike Budd. “The Nano LCR 3.0 incorporates six specially designed 2in Scan-Speak drivers and three 1in soft dome SB tweeters in a fully-damped and braced aluminium enclosure. This was a major challenge for
such a compact enclosure. We are very proud of how it sounds and how it looks, and we believe it is the best performer in its class.” The system is available in custom paint finishes, has a frequency range of 190Hz-20kHz (+/-3dB), recommended amp power of 75-

Kick-starting the market for building automation AT 6:00PM ON Monday 3 February in the Forum of the Amsterdam RAI, Dr Dirk Schlesinger, global lead for manufacturing industries of Cisco Consulting Services, will present the Opening Keynote Address of ISE 2014. Titled ‘Kick-Starting the Market for Building Automation’, Schlesinger’s speech will give attendees an exclusive insight into how a new cross-industry initiative set up by Cisco, ABB, Bosch and LG could transform the world of ‘smart’ building technology by offering a common standard for data exchange across multiple appliances and disciplines. “In October 2013, Cisco, ABB, Bosch and LG signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the development of a common, open and discrimination-free platform to unite diverse services such as lighting control, energy management, security, healthcare and, not least, audiovisual entertainment and communication,” Schlesinger explains. “In my Opening Keynote Address at ISE 2014, I will explain how this platform will enable new business models, giving equipment manufacturers, software developers, service providers, systems integrators and other businesses in the ecosystem the tools they need to kick-start the market for home and building automation.” The initiative calls for existing protocols to be used by the new
tools wherever possible. Once the operating company for the platform has been incorporated, the aim is that compatible appliances will communicate with each other over radio networks such as WiFi and Zigbee, and over other wired connections such as KNX. ‘Customer premise equipment’ within a building would then manage all the individual appliances and create a secure internet link to Cloudbased services, with any unit being able to perform this function, regardless of manufacturer, provided it runs on software that satisfies the relevant standard. In his role as global lead for manufacturing industries at Cisco Consulting Services – the management and technology consulting organisation of Cisco set up in the summer of 2013 – Dr Schlesinger is perfectly placed to deliver a visionary speech on the topic of home and building automation. Prior to assuming his current position, he led the manufacturing team of Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG) and chaired the IBSG Asia Pacific Team – covering a range of industries including telecom service providers, financial services, consumer goods, the public sector and manufacturing. Before joining Cisco in 2005, Schlesinger was vice president and partner of Boston Consulting Group. An aerospace engineer by training, he holds an MBA from the University of

He currently also serves on the board of the Centre for Future Energy Business at Erasmus Universiteit, Rotterdam, Netherlands. “The initiative that Cisco and its partners ABB, Bosch and LG have started offers huge potential for the business leaders, owners and managers who attend ISE,” comments Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events. “While the emphasis is on promoting interoperability in the smart home, it’s clear that this initiative will have applications in commercial buildings as well, making it the perfect topic for a show that serves both markets such as Integrated Systems Europe. “The initiative’s timeline calls for an EU-wide launch in mid2015, with the platform being made available to developers during 2014. “ISE’s Opening Keynote Address will be the first occasion on which the business model is outlined in detail in front of an international B2B audience, and it is a measure of our event’s status that Dr Schlesinger has offered to make space in his schedule to deliver his talk on the eve of ISE 2014.” As in previous years, the Opening Keynote Address, together with the Opening Reception that follows it at 7.00pm, is free to attend for all pre-registered ISE visitors.

Smart Building Conference As the Smart Building Conference returns to ISE on Monday 3 February, we talk to conference moderator Bob Snyder about how the event’s aims and approaches are evolving over time The Amsterdam event will build on the success of the London Smart Building Conference last October
“OUR INDUSTRY should be trying to redefine the smart building for the buildings industry,” reflects Bob Snyder, moderator of the Smart Building Conference at ISE 2014. “In some circles, the smart building is finished as soon as it becomes a building. But I think it’s a very important part of increasing everybody’s businesses to make sure that people understand that it isn’t a smart building until the occupants get all the advantages of the infrastructure that’s put into it.” He concedes that this is no simple task, given the current state of affairs. “Certainly now, if you take any building systems integrator or a consultant on smart building, half the time they don’t even recognise us – we’re not part of the mix. That’s a huge challenge for the industry.”

ISE 2014 sees the third Smart Building Conference. The first took place in Amsterdam a year ago, while the second was held in London last October. “After the first SBC at ISE 2013, we moved the event to a local nation, so the format was designed more for England than for a broader international audience.” Snyder sees a clear progression in the aims and approaches of each iteration of the event. “The first SBC was more of a ‘cheerleading’ conference, saying ‘You should look at this’. Then in London, we got more practical; we tried to bring the attendees one layer closer to what is actually going on and how to you get their hands on it. “These events have to be evolutionary,” he continues. “What we try to do is increase
people’s ability to take advantage of the opportunity each time we have an event – we try to move it closer. From my point of view, I was pleased that the London conference was successful in accomplishing that.” He points to the polling of attendees that took place at the UK event, using handheld voting terminals. “At the beginning of the conference we tested their knowledge of what was happening in smart buildings, and then tested them again at the end – and the evidence of that shows that people learned a lot about what the key drivers are, what’s happening in smart building and why it’s important to them.” So how does he see the progression continuing in Amsterdam? For Snyder, it’s very much about a two-way exchange of knowledge. He explains: “Part of the problem for us as in industry in smart building is that we are trying to take other industries who don’t know us, and bring them to an awareness of our industry – and at the same time we’re trying to learn about what they do. So the strategy for SBC at ISE 2014 is to bring in more important and significant companies on a pan-
European scale, to add to the knowledge base. They get a chance to see us in our element at ISE and at the same time to share their perspective with us on what’s happening in smart building. We’ve got people coming in from companies like Johnson Controls and Honeywell – these are very big contributors to the knowledge base. I also think it’s advantageous for our industry that these other industries start to respect us.” So, he maintains, finding common ground in the topic of smart building is beneficial to everyone, whether from inside or outside our industry. “This is
“Our industry should be trying to redefine the smart building for the buildings industry” an event owned by InfoComm and CEDIA and part of the reason for it is outreach to other industries so that we can become better integrators. It’s a wonderful way to have outreach because we’re bringing these people in to take a good look at us – and that’s not an easy trick to pull off, to get other industries
Some highlights from the programme The keynote address will be given by Jim Sinopoli, managing principal of Smart Buildings LLC, which provides engineering and consulting services for the design and operation of integrated building technology systems. He is also the author of Smart Buildings Systems for Architects, Owners and Builders. Another of the plenary sessions will be given by Mark Walters, who is chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance, an open consortium of leading global companies dedicated to establishing Z-Wave as the standard in wireless controls. His presentation will be called ‘The Next Generation of ZWave’. Once again, for a large part of the day the conference will split into two parallel tracks, covering commercial and residential topics respectively. One of the highlights on the commercial track will be ‘Big Data, Analytics and the Internet of Buildings’, presented by Sudhi Sinha from Johnson Controls. Also on the commercial track is ‘Integrators Seek Differentiation in Smart Building Market’, presented by Sam Grinter, a market analyst with IHS. Grinter’s research has focused on service and solution trends in building automation and the wider intelligent building market. Meanwhile on the residential track, Jeremy Peterson, general manager of Honeywell EMEA’s Connected Homes division, will talk about ‘The Future of Connected Homes’. In his previous role at Honeywell, Peterson co-led the Connected Home programme in the company’s American offices and was responsible for launching its connected strategy. Residential energy matters will be tackled in a session given by René Balvers, CEO of Flexicontrol and serial entrepreneur in the field of smart electronics, entitled ‘Home Energy Management: Smart Users Behave Smart and Demand Smart Homes’. Also presenting at the Smart Building Conference will be Jeremy Towler, senior manager, energy & smart technologies at BSRIA formerly the Building Services Research and Information Association; and his colleague Zoltan Karpathy, a multilingual consultant who is senior manager for BSRIA WMI’s Intelligent Buildings and Homes Team.

big successes of the Smart Building Conference – to bring to the table these people that we have to know for the future of our integration business. From the UK event, the people that we brought in from the outside came away with a great deal of respect for us – some of them said this was the best smart building event that they’d seen, including all the other things going on in the other industries. That’s kind of cool,” he concludes. www.smartbuildingconference .com

Q&A
Everyone seems to have their own definition of a smart building - what's yours? A smart building is an automated, integrated, data-rich environment in which all of the energy-consuming devices and systems in the structure are connected to work together to make the building more efficient, sustainable and the user more productive. What is the Internet of Things and what is its relevance to the smart building world? If an object can be represented digitally, it can be controlled from any location. Thanks to connectivity, data can be gathered from more places, with more ways to increase efficiency and improve safety, security and building functionality. The Internet of Things (IoT) can be thought of as a network of physical objects that have embedded technology which allows these objects to be accessed through the internet. The Smart Building is a microcosm of IoT, a global network inside a structure or space. The interconnectivity of the buildings devices with IT automation, predictive analysis and automation are seamlessly
integrated to produce the smart building. Do you think that our industry is closer to the ‘heart’ of the smart building market in commercial or in residential buildings? In my opinion the AV industry is the heart of the smart building. The industry understands how to use sound, motion and light to help humans communicate to other humans. Projectors, screens, digital signs, speakers, microphones, monitors, telephones and all the other devices that transmit information are exactly the devices that form the soul of the smart building. Add heating and air-conditioning and a couple of occupancy sensors to the mix and we’ve created the smart space or smart building. The AV industry already knows how to connect and operate the majority of the “boxes” in a smart space. Add a few pieces and a smart building is created. In the former analogue world, the AV professional stood in the middle of the space and adjusted the system to suit the client needs and make the space functional. In today’s digital world, the AV professional will stand at the master display and help the client understand the smart building to make it functional.

excellent candidates for consideration for future funding. “It is, in effect, the elevator pitch, a short presentation to a willing audience of investors, all of whom are hoping to find something of interest that they can become involved in,” says Deligny. “The procedure is that we ask potential companies to log onto our website and fill out a short form explaining and detailing their current organisation and activities, financial performance and strategy. We will select a small
and validation before finally being invited to present at the showcase. “The audience will consist of a mixture of investors, industry peers, attendees who have already registered for ISE 2014 as exhibitors or participants, and visitors who have expressed an interest in attending the event. Everyone is welcome to register to attend, but given the limited number of tickets we reserve the right to select attendees in order to keep the right balance between companies presenting, investors and the general public.”

number of them and invite them to present on the day.” The selection process will depend upon the company being able to demonstrate a number of characteristics applicable to successful organisations in this industry. These include: involvement in a fast-growing market, their quality of innovation, defensibility of their product or service against strong competition, the experience and make-up of their management team, previous and successful financial performance measured by revenue, growth and/or profitability. In addition, the company will have to stand up to independent third-party scrutiny
Successful participants will be shortlisted from those who applied via the applications website and their summary details added to a public profile on the website. This will include brief financials and a short description, along with the ‘Go4Venture View’ providing a snapshot of the opportunities and challenges identified in each business. This will be made available to investors and the general public. Putting developments in context, Deligny remarks: “Go4Venture has already placed funds in excess of $500 million over a period of more than 10 years. Show me the way The company behind ISE 2014’s new interactive floorplan will be exhibiting its digital guidance systems IF YOU’VE been looking at the electronic floorplan on the ISE 2014 website, you’ll have noticed that a new version has been in place since November. This new highly interactive floorplan was developed by 3d-berlin vr solutions – a high-tech IT company that specialises in building information and wayfinding systems. The company, which is also exhibiting at the show, was
24 Preview Edition 2014
founded in 2007 by virtual reality specialists Dr Björn Clausen and Adrian Zentner as a spin-off from the Freie Universität Berlin. Today 3d-berlin is a leading provider of technology for digital guidance systems. The detailed, sophisticated map not only displays the entire exhibition area, but also carries information about surrounding transport connections. The minimap helps website visitors to
explore the area and the halls. Users can find and highlight individual exhibitors on the map, or use the menu to locate groups of exhibitors groups that offer a particular technology, such as digital signage or residential solutions. “From the very beginning, there was the technical demand that the system automatically updates itself," explains Zentner (pictured), who is CTO of 3d-berlin. “Via access to the EXPOCAD exhibitor management system, all data is updated daily. Optimised for the integration in ISE’s own website, the floor plan is the ideal tool for advance information about show offers, exhibitors and their stand locations.” Hovering the cursor over a stand brings up a pop-up balloon with the name of the exhibiting company, the stand number and the size of the stand. Clicking produces a fuller ‘info balloon’ which displays all main and coexhibitors on the stand, including logos. Clicking on a company’s
information button takes the users to a full description of the company, with a facility to schedule appointments. A ‘copylink’ function allows booth location information to be forwarded, for example in emails. “Compared to the previous version, the floorplan is now better adapted to the needs of the ISE and the users,” concludes Zentner. At ISE 2014, 3d-berlin will show its product range, from simple 2D solutions to
spectacular 3D-wayfinding systems for spaces such as shopping malls, universities and hospitals. The company’s Guide3D information and wayfinding system provides orientation in large buildings and other areas, showing visitors the way in an easy-to-understand threedimensional manner. The system is platform-independent and runs on multiple devices: on kiosk systems, in browsers, on mobile devices and even as a printout. Stand: 10-K135

M2D: MANUFACTURER TO DISTRIBUTOR
For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2014
Match making ISE’s new business service, M2D (standing for Manufacturer to Distributor) launches in 2014, connecting two key parts of the industry ecosystem with the help of digital-signage software from ISE exhibitor 2Signage. The application will be shown on a number of large LCD screens placed in areas of high traffic, including entrance halls, business lounge, corridors, and close to the popular and well-frequented bars and cafes throughout the RAI exhibition complex. It will feature scrolling lists of manufacturers seeking distribution representatives with contact details so that introductions can be made on the show floor. “As well as delivering a muchneeded state-of-the-art method of matching manufacturing principles with sales organisations as a replacement to the outmoded and inefficient notice boards, the technology demonstrates how 2Signage software modules can be quickly and easily developed to deliver real-time information,” says Holger Dahl, 2Signage’s managing director. Distributors attracted by the screens can instantly download a full list of available opportunities directly onto their tablet or smartphone by simply scanning the QR code displayed on the screen. Alternatively, they can visit the 2Signage stand in Hall 8 (stand 8-K275) to download the full list. Once downloaded, the would-be distributor can search through all the opportunities in their own time on a country-bycountry basis and make their own plans to visit potential collaborating manufacturers. The service will be available throughout the whole period of

the ISE show and will allow interested distributors to visit individual manufacturers for immediate discussions and to make arrangements for future meetings to agree terms of representation. “M2D is being provided to ISE exhibitors and visitors as a free service, as a practical demonstration of the effectiveness of pertinent information at a high-profile event,” continues Dahl. “We have already developed the application through the versatile custom modules incorporated in the 2Signage digital signage software suite which allows connection to almost any form of

structured data. It is a straightforward and very effective way to show the power of a database-driven application in a real situation. And, of course, both manufacturers and distributors attending ISE 2014 will be able to benefit greatly from this solution, so it is an all-round winning solution.” Manufacturers interested in advertising their distribution requirements can do so simply by logging onto their exhibitor area of the ISE 2014 website and filling out the appropriate section of their exhibitor data with the category of product to be supported, contact name and the territory of activity required.
Each exhibitor may enter up to six separate entries which should be sufficient to cover most, if not all, organisations attending and exhibiting at the show. “The response has already been fantastic,” proclaims Dahl. “We added the facility to the ISE website just eight weeks ago and have already received several hundred entries. There are still several weeks to go before the show and we expect many more to be added during that period. The facility will be available right up to and during the show itself, when we expect the highest level of insertions to be made. Each screen around the exhibition hall will show a scrolling list of vacancies and distribution requirements of manufacturers attending the exhibition and with that amount of data it will take quite some time to cycle completely through the full list. So we don’t expect many people to stand and watch the whole range, rather it should serve as a flavour of the types of opportunity open to them and encourage them to scan the QR code for the full, up-to-date list.” A key element of the system lies in the highly secure nature of the 2Signage system. Dahl: “2Signage is a product of 2Safer GmbH, a software company specialising in product and service management with clients among the largest organisations in the telecommunications and transportation industries. 2Signage makes use of 2Safer’s standard SaaS architecture, which has been proven for several years and has been designed on the principles of confidentiality, integrity and availability.” Stand: 8-K275

New half-day event will focus on the trends and techniques shaping the integration of sports facilities worldwide
WHAT IS SPORTS VIDEO GROUP EUROPE? TAKING place on the afternoon of 5 February, Sport Facility Integration Summit is a new conference event produced by Sports Video Group (SVG) Europe and aimed at integrators, distributors and manufacturers visiting the annual ISE exhibition. Attendees will have the opportunity to find out more about the latest trends and techniques related to sports facility systems integration, as well as the nextgeneration tools that can make the difference between a good and a great fan experience. Incorporating panel sessions and bespoke case study presentations, the summit will begin with an examination of control room technologies. As video display resolution increases, the need for effective tools to create and deliver HD and, in the near-future, 4K images intensifies. This panel session will consider the newest product offerings in control room technologies, how they are being deployed today, and how they can help make your client’s facility futureproof. Aimed primarily at new entrants to the market, the second session will find European systems integrators discussing their experiences of gaining a foothold in the sports venue

market, as well as which countries and regions are likely to afford the most opportunities over the next couple of years. The emergence of a new generation of video and audio transport technologies has been an abiding theme of recent ISE events, so it’s appropriate that these be considered with regard to installation in sports facilities.

In this panel session, experts will discuss the latest developments in this area, including the rise of standards-backed networking technologies such as AVB. By common agreement, the standard of audio in sports venues worldwide has improved dramatically over the last decade, inspired in no small part by the need to be match-ready for major sporting tournaments. As part of Sport Facility Integration Summit, consultants and integrators will discuss the tools and techniques
professionals will discuss the blend of services they are delivering – from big-screen visuals to mobile-based content – and what assistance they need from systems integrators to ensure that solutions remain fit for purpose. Xavier De Vynck, VP business development – sports division at EVS, and Charles ‘Chuck’ Meyer, CTO, core products at Miranda, will be among the industry leaders contributing to the panels. The Summit will also feature
several keynote presentations exploring specific recent sports integration projects. Ken Kerschbaumer, editorial director of SVG Europe, comments: “Sport venue and broadcast facilities are often the most technically complex and challenging for systems integrators to build. It is also a rapidly expanding market opportunity and is in need of integrators that have an understanding of new technologies and workflows. The Sport Facility Integration Summit will be the place for systems integrators and sport production professionals to fill that knowledge gap and create new revenue opportunities.” “We’re hugely excited to be launching this new event at ISE 2014,” says SVG Europe general manager Joe Hosken. “The Sport Facility Integration Summit provides an opportunity to really drill down into the issues that are affecting the design and delivery of sports venues worldwide. New media and broadcast expectations mean that this is a time of unprecedented change, and we look forward to reflecting that sense of excitement throughout the day.” For more details and to register, visit www.svgeurope.org.
The Sports Video Group is a trade association for professionals involved with the creation, production and distribution of sports content. Launched eight years ago in the USA, SVG draws its membership from groups including federations, rightsowners, national broadcasters, OB providers, production companies, sports clubs, systems integrators and venues. A dedicated European operation was introduced in 2012 to represent more comprehensively the interests of non-US-based members with a regularly updated news-based website, weekly newsletter, and varied programme of conference and summit events. 2014 promises to be SVG Europe’s biggest year yet with plans for a revamped web presence and a quintet of conference events, including Sport Facility Integration Summit (February, Amsterdam), Football Production Summit (March, Paris), SportTech Europe (May, London), Sport Production Summit (September, Amsterdam) and FutureSport 2014 (December, location TBC).
ISE SHOW-FLOOR THEATRES
For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2014
Light Adds Life Groundbreaking designs for ISE’s new show-floor theatres
THE two show-floor theatres being built by Integrated Systems Europe for the first time in 2014 will offer more than just educational, informative and entertaining presentations. The design of the theatres themselves is intended to inspire attendees by making them aware of the creative possibilities of some of the AV industry’s emerging technologies. The Residential Solutions Theatre in Hall 7 and Commercial Solutions Theatre in Hall 8 are both being designed for ISE by Improve, creators of visual experiences, based in Delft, Netherlands. Under the slogan ‘Licht Doet Leven’ (‘Light Adds Life’), Improve is a broad-
based consultancy that goes beyond the role of traditional rental and staging company by working closely with its clients to fulfil their business goals in a creative way. “We listen very carefully to our customers to see what their story is – what they’re trying to achieve,” explains Improve director Antoinette Wijffels, who is managing the ISE theatre project. “Our speciality is the integration of light and image. We see video projection as a form of light, but since you cannot see any light unless you have materials for it to shine on, we are involved in the set design, too. We do a lot of creative things with cloths, wood, furniture
and screens that are made into different shapes to project on.” While the two theatres will both feature state-of-the-art technology, Wijffels says the approaches taken for their design are quite different. The Commercial Solutions Theatre will have a distinctive circular structure designed to showcase contemporary live-event techniques, while its Residential counterpart, as one might expect, has more of a home-orientated feel. “In the Commercial Solutions Theatre, we want people to experience the combination of light and video through the use of media servers – image supporting light, or light supporting image,”
First impressions of Improve's designs for the Commercial Solutions (left) and Residential Solutions Theatres at ISE 2014
Wijffels says. “We come from a decade where an event had a lighting designer, a video designer and a decoration designer. All those disciplines are now highly integrated, and we want to demonstrate that together with the speakers”. “When designing the Residential Solutions Theatre, we tried to put ourselves in the shoes of people sitting at home and wondering if there is something more they could do with their screens and their projectors. These items of consumer electronics are so affordable now, and they can be used not just to entertain but to create your own
unique atmosphere and provide decoration for a home.” What both theatre designs will have in common, however, is the desire to empower not only their audiences but the session presenters as well. “We hope that all the speakers will feel that they are being supported by the technical materials, and not feel inhibited by them,” Wijffels adds. “We want the speakers to transcend their surroundings and rise above themselves. Only then can their audience truly experience something different – something that inspires them and makes them want to do business in new, innovative and interesting ways.”

Demonstrating a new iOSbased iPad companion app for its flagship product, SIX 2013, will be systems integration software company D-Tools. Available this quarter for partners worldwide, this new release adds mobile quoting capabilities that enable commercial and residential AV integrators to generate quotes natively on an iPad, then bring them into SIX 2013 for further project design and management. A native iOS application, the D-Tools iPad app leverages D-Tools’ extensive manufacturer product library by enabling integrators to access
and integrate product category and package data from the SIX 2013 catalogue while working with customers in the field. Integrators can enter client and contact information into the iPad app, then walk prospective customers through available installation scenarios in order to create a quote for approval. Once complete, the resulting quote can be imported into SIX 2013 for additional design work and synchronisation. The iPad app utilises many of D-Tools’ workflow concepts, including the specification of locations and systems, allowing integrators to provide packages or pre-configured systems for inclusion in the quote. ClickShare becomes more affordable BARCO ISE 2014 will see the first major public appearance of Barco’s new CSM Base Unit for its ClickShare collaboration and presentation system. ClickShare now comes in two flavours – the new CSM Base Unit and the original full-featured CSC Base Unit – so that, according to Barco, any type of meeting room can benefit from the ClickShare experience. The new CSM Base Unit offers the core ClickShare experience at a lower price. It displays images up to Full HD resolution – via its HDMI or VGA output – and is fully compatible with both the
ClickShare Button and the free apps for iOS and Android. Only one user can share on-screen at a time, but eight Buttons can be connected wirelessly to the base unit. A set consists of the CSM Base Unit and two ClickShare Buttons. For users who need higher resolution or a double screen setup, or who want multiple users on the
central screen at the same time, Barco recommends the current CSC Base Unit. Designed for high-profile meeting rooms, boardrooms and conference rooms, Barco says that this system offers a full set of features to deliver a more complete ClickShare collaboration experience. Among other features, the CSC can drive two separate screens simultaneously, as well as support special output
resolution, including panoramic composition (2560 x 1080). Up to four people can share content onscreen at the same time, while 64 Buttons can be ready to share. “For the introduction of the CSM Base Unit we’ve made extensive use of the capabilities of AWIND, the Taiwanese technology-leader that Barco acquired earlier this year,” said Guy Coen, general manager, collaboration at Barco. “This new base unit combines the many years of experience of both design teams to offer a new ClickShare experience.” Stand: 11-H75, 11-F78
Specialising in the design and manufacture of connectivity solutions that allow CCTV and AV equipment to be connected via Cat5e/6 copper twisted pair in a structured cabling environment, MuxLab is set to highlight its HDMI over IP Extender at ISE 2014. The Extender allows an HDMI source to be connected via any Ethernet LAN, thereby allowing AV broadcasts to be set up and changed without the need to install a dedicated cabling system. The kit includes two units: a HDMI over IP Encoder and HDMI over IP Decoder. The HDMI Encoder converts an HDMI bitstream into IP, allowing it to be transmitted over an Ethernet LAN. The HDMI Decoder, meanwhile, converts the IP packets back to the original HDMI bitstream for playback via HDMI display. The units support multicasting and broadcasting and up to 16 transmitters/200 receivers. PoE is also supported, and 1080p HDMI signals can be extended up to 330ft (100m). They are also said to reduce the need for dedicated AV matrix switches. Stand: 1-N125

VideoWall rises to mounting challenge SMARTMETALS The new VideoWall range from SmartMetals will allow any kind of matrix to be installed on a wall, floor or truss, and is suitable for both permanent installation or hire applications. One difficulty when mounting a row of displays or a matrix configuration (compared to a single display installation) to a wall is that the larger mounting
surface means there are more chances of the wall not being completely straight. Therefore, the VideoWall mount needs to act as a completely level mounting surface to which the screens can be attached. Thanks to its custom-developed aluminium profiles, this mounting challenge – to properly align the displays with one another not only horizontally and vertically, but also in depth – is covered.
The VideoWall also meets the maintenance and replacement challenge, providing an easy way to service the displays and save a lot of time. SmartMetals can offer the complete package, giving installers the choice of three different types of mounting arm and a wide variety of wall or floor compartments, for large or small VideoWalls. TEA organises one-day VIP Tour The Themed Entertainment Association is organising a VIP Tour of ISE 2014 on Thursday 6 February. This follows the success of similar events at the ISE and InfoComm shows last year. The aim of the tour is to provide professionals who work alongside integrators in projects – such as architects and interior designers – to gain an understanding of the basics of various kinds of audiovisual and
electronic system technology. Because the event is organised by TEA, the emphasis will be on technologies employed in theme parks, visitor attractions, museum exhibits and other themed environments. David Willrich, owner of integrator DJ Willrich and president of the TEA's European and Middle Eastern board, gave an example of the information likely to be imparted to tour participants: "It's an opportunity
to come and look at a broad range of hardware and find out why they use some of the kit that they do use. If they're advising a client on what attraction options they have for a given space, and if, say, they want to use projection, then they need to understand projector types, limitations and costs and so on before they say 'Yes, we can do this for £250,000' when it should actually be £2.5 million." The tour has been expanded
this year into a one-day event. This will begin with a series of presentations by smaller manufacturers. "Rather than get everyone doing all the walking, we'll ask the smaller companies to come to a room and make presentations about their technology and how it fits into the market – not in a company or brand-led way, but in a generic way," explained Willrich. There will then be a guided tour of some of the larger exhibitors'
84in display is world’s brightest DYNASCAN TECHNOLOGY A new 84in large-format display, claimed to be the brightest of its type in the world, has been launched by DynaScan Technology. The DS841LR4 is the largest professional LCD offering from DynaScan, and features a 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) IPS LCD with an ultra-high brightness backlight (with local dimming), producing a sunlight-viewable 2,500-nit image. The DS841LR4 is designed for large-scale display applications in high ambient light environments, and is said to be an ideal solution for storefront windows, outdoor kiosks and other locations with direct sunlight. As solar heat gain is a concern when a display is placed behind glass, the DS841LR4 includes what Dynascan describes as an ultra-quiet, high efficiency cooling system, along with a high
temperature resistant panel capable of tolerating temperatures up to 110°C (240°F) before experiencing blackening. Local dimming of the backlight means that darker areas of an image receive less backlighting than lighter areas, producing a high contrast image with deep black levels. The DS841LR4 uses IPS display technology for accurate colour from all viewing angles. Each screen is individually colour-calibrated to the D65 (6,500K) colour standard to ensure uniformity among multiple displays. The screen may also be calibrated to a user’s specification using DynaScan’s calibration solution. The new model expands DynaScan’s portfolio of high brightness displays to ten different models in various sizes, brightness levels and form factors. The DS841LR4 will begin shipping this quarter. Cardinal virtues of networked control A modular, networked media control system that includes amplifier, mixers and more has been introduced by Sommer Cable. The Cardinal DVM 194 series promises to be a “very reasonably priced and fully modular device generation which offers an unprecedented flexibility”. It can be used as a fully closed system or as an open system with free interfaces. Sommer Cable showed prototype DVM 194 units at ISE last year. “Since the interest did not fade, we were refining the prototypes last year and can now present a DVM 194 series which will hit the market with a lot of extra features,” said Peter Rieck, key account and distribution
stands on the ISE 2014 showfloor, after which the group will return to the room for a summing-up presentation. The event will be rounded off with and an end-of-day ‘mixer’ networking reception. Membership of TEA is not a requirement to take part in the VIP Tour. Spaces are limited, so those with an interest in participating should apply for further information by emailing emeevents@teaconnect.org.
Four Sommer Cable DVM 194 control, mixing, amp and routing modules
bidirectional communication with connected devices (such as a motor-driven canvas, a beamer lift or blackout equipment), plus 12 momentary switch interfaces and 12 programmable LED outputs. The compact DVM-194-AMP Mini High-Performance Amplifier delivers two 100W channels into 4
ohms (50W @ 8 ohms) and produces almost no waste heat, while the DVM-194-AMIX Automatic Mix Machine offers “an unprecedented degree of automation”, with gain and level adjustable on all channels (including keeping microphone channels at a desired level). The DVM-194-HDS Picture Source Selector can route up to four HDMI picture sources to two HDMI outputs and allows a total automation via the media controller. The 24V devices can be integrated into Sommer’s popular Sysboxx housing system. A 2RU frame will take up to four with an installation depth of 14cm. Stand: 5-S120
Demonstrated live on its ISE 2014 stand for the first time will be Sony’s new Multi-View interactive presentation solution, which is said to offer users greater flexibility and more opportunities for audience engagement during live presentations. By combining Sony HD controllable cameras, F-series edge blending projectors and DWZ wireless audio systems, it enables presenters to interact with multiple sources of content over one, large edge-blended screen and to bring corporate meetings, university lectures or big events to life. Sony will also be showing the SRX-T615’s ability to seamlessly edge blend and tile high contrast 4K content from multiple projectors to create super-sized image displays. The projector features 4K resolution, brightness of 18,000 lumens, contrast ratio of 12,000:1, and what the company says is very high colour accuracy and image uniformity. Reduced running costs are facilitated by the SRX-T615’s multi-lamp array, with six HPM sources in individual cartridges making lamp replacement easier and safer. Reduced risk of ‘dark screen’ lamp outages is complemented by fail-safe reliability, plus greater operating flexibility with the ability to select the number of lamps lit to meet the needs of different applications and venue sizes. BASALTE With its completely flat design and extremely low height (just 1mm), the Auro motion detector from Basalte is said to fit the requirements for integration into any decor. Add to that its diameter of only 52mm, and
Auro is one of the smallest motion detectors in the market. Auro was developed for use with KNX home automation systems, and contains a built-in light sensor. Depending on the situation, the motion detector can dim the light to different levels, activate different scenes, switch on the light for different periods of time, or handle different lighting thresholds. For example, Auro can be programmed to dim the lights when switched on at night.
In addition, the integrated LED light can be used for orientation in a dark environment. Independently from the lighting, the motion detector can also steer the ventilation of the room. Auro contains an integrated temperature sensor, making it possible to measure the temperature in a room without a separate thermometer. The detector can send out a heat alarm when the temperature surpasses a certain threshold. Stand: 7-Q190
Room Remote makes debut BITWISE Making its international debut at ISE 2014 and being demonstrated live in a theatre environment is the new BitWise Controls Room Remote. The remote can be used to not only control BitWise-connected devices but also the BitWise Touch app, with any command given through the remote instantly transmitted to the app and vice versa. Unlike traditional remotes, says the company, line-of-sight is not required for the Room Remote, giving it the ability to be used in any room of the home. The

combination of BitWise software, Touch app and Room Remote enables the creation of a centralised automation and control system for homes and businesses.
Backed by what the company describes as a powerful software package, the BitWise Touch app and Room Remote are claimed to provide the ultimate in handheld simplicity without compromising functionality. A computer is needed only for initial programming, and all the features are customisable for Android- and iOS-capable devices, such as phones and tablets. Adding a Room Remote and RF receiver to BitWise controllers is said to be easy and multiple remotes can communicate with a single RF receiver. Stand: 1-N53
ISE 2014 sees Aavara introduce its new HDMI/USB 2.0 KVM Over IP solution, PB7000, which features full HD HDMI video, multichannel audio, high speed USB and IR/RS-232 control signal broadcasting to multiple TVs, displays or projectors over an IP network. According to Aavara, it is the ultimate solution for HDMI USB KVM and residential/commercial over Ethernet networks. It boasts unicast, broadcast and multicast HDMI, USB, RS-232 and IR Over Gigabit Ethernet; a VGA out on the receiver for a
non-HDCP video passthrough; and video resolutions of up to 1080p full HD, 720p 3D, and 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA). There is an analogue audio in/out for an external active speaker, four high speed USB 2.0 ports on the receiver (with keyboard/mouse emulation), and a dip switch for up to 16 video channel multicasting. Furthermore, it features IR remote control video channel switching. The PB7000 is designed for digital signage, HD KVM Over IP and residential multi-room HDMI distribution applications. Stand: 10-P130
New exhibitors for attendees to discover
Located in the hallway between Halls 8 and 9, ISE’s new Discovery Zone is an opportunity for visitors to catch a glimpse of the future by viewing a range of new-product ideas from small and/or start-up companies that have never previously exhibited at Integrated Systems Europe.
Around a dozen companies have signed up for space in the Zone, which has been designed to gain exposure to the ISE buyer audience for businesses that cannot justify the cost or extent of a full stand on the show floor. With an easy-to-browse layout and a minimum of complicated stand design, the Discovery Zone is the latest new area of ISE to provide a showcase for emerging companies and technologies.
