Taking up the entirety of the Amsterdam RAI, and with last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attendance ďŹ gure of nearly 60,000 expected to be exceeded, ISE 2016 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the 13th edition of Integrated Systems Europe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is poised to be the biggest to date. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to summarise the wide variety of events and attractions there in a small space, but one thing seems to keep recurring â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the number four. Four days: For the ďŹ rst time in its 13-year history, the ISE exhibition will run across four days, from Tuesday 9 February to Friday 12 February. As Mike Blackman, managing director of Integrated

Systems Events, explains on page 4, this is in response to demand from exhibitors to be able to spend more time with attendees during the show. It is hoped that the move will also lead to a more level attendance pattern, with less of the middle-day peak that occurred with the threeday model. Counting down the days to the first ever four-day ISE Mik ke Blacckma an, managing director of Integrated Systems Events, sets the scene for the biggest ever ISE and outlines some of the show’s firsts As we approach the 13th Integrated Systems Europe, we look forward to an action-packed four days at the Amsterdam RAI. Every year we arrive at the show dates with renewed excitement and anticipation. As soon as the curtain fell on last year’s ISE, we committed to planning ISE 2016 and to looking at ways of improving what we offer exhibitors and attendees. One of the standout changes this year is, of course, the addition of the fourth day, which sees ISE grow from three days to four days for the first time in its history. The conversation about this change has been ongoing for some time and now that it’s here, we’re confident it will be a very positive move. ISE started out, in its first year, with 120 exhibitors. This year we will welcome more than 1,000. Between 2008 and 2014, our net floor space grew from 18,600sqm to just over 36,000sqm. In 2016, the show’s footprint will be 44,000sqm. We now occupy almost all of the space available to us in the Amsterdam RAI. The show has grown to such a size that attendees need more time for meetings, for stand visits and for forging and refreshing important business relationships. As the attendance figure has grown and grown, reaching almost 60,000 in 2015, it was obvious that something would need to change. More space would be needed to meet exhibitor demand and a larger window of time would be necessary to accommodate the volume of attendees. Not only is ISE expanding to four days, the show floor has grown by approximately 11% in comparison to last year. These changes will help to answer an increasing number of requests from exhibitors that want more time to spend with attendees. At the same time, the overall attendance, which we expect to increase again this year, will be spread over a larger show floor and across four days instead of three. Consultation with exhibitors and attendees has formed the backbone of this move. That was very important. Of course we have our own ambitions for the show, but the one ambition that underpins everything that we do is delivering better experiences and more value for our customers. I’m sure you can

relate to that within the context of your own business. As organisers, we absolutely do not underestimate the significance of adding an extra day to the show. We understand the impact that it will have on exhibitors and we take the responsibility of making it a success very seriously. New opportunities Re-defining ISE as a four-day show instead of a three-day show has given us a chance to look at new ideas and opportunities. With that in mind, we have introduced some concepts and additions to the show that are brand new for this year. That includes our Closing Keynote, taking place on Friday morning, which will be presented by Dr Michio Kaku. Dr Kaku is a futurist, populariser of science, and theoretical physicist, as well as a bestselling author. He is the co-founder of string field theory and continues Einstein’s search to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory. His keynote promises to be a compelling insight into how technological developments will help to shape the future. Another first for ISE 2016 is the Drone Arena. Hosted by Stampede Global, the new area will welcome leading drone manufacturers, and will deliver a programme of presentations and demonstrations. Drone technology opens up a number of opportunities to the AV market; we expect this to be the start of an important growth trend for the industry. This year, we’re also shining a light on another exciting development in the AV industry – the increasing prominence of IT within it, as AV technologies continue to be much more network-centric. Two worlds that were once quite separate have joined forces to create intelligent products and intelligent solutions. Our focus, then, is on consolidating this development and making it more accessible by driving awareness that ISE is an important show for IT professionals. These are just a few of the developments that you’ll see at ISE 2016. There are many more. We have more than 1,000 exhibitors that are poised to unveil the very latest innovations, including a number international launches. Our Show Floor

Help raise the bar on quality David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD, executive director and CEO, InfoComm International, discusses how companies across Europe are helping to raise quality across the industry – and ISE 2016 provides an opportunity for you to do the same To some, it comes as news that InfoComm International, which runs the largest AV trade show in North America, also co-owns Integrated Systems Europe, held annually in Amsterdam. What also comes as news to some is the fact that InfoComm does more than hold trade shows; it also offers education, certification, standards, member events, and more – all over the world, including Europe. And seeing the effects firsthand is a fulfilling job. Late last year, I travelled around Europe on behalf of InfoComm, in the company of Terry Friesenborg, CTS, our chief global officer, and Pamela Taggart, CTS, our senior director of development for Europe. I’ve visited Europe many times in my role with InfoComm, but this trip was designed to start a fresh dialogue with key parts of the AV industry around the continent, where we’ve found pockets of passionate InfoComm supporters – for example, throughout the United Kingdom – but where overall engagement with our association is somewhat limited. Some of that has to do with the nature of the European AV market, which is the second largest in the world, according to InfoComm’s Global Market Definition and Strategy Study. In fact, it’s difficult to talk about Europe as a single marketplace because every country has its own constraints and opportunities (and, often, language). InfoComm’s effort to provide service to European companies includes connecting with them where they work and thanking them for their commitment to industry excellence. If you’ll indulge me, I’d like to describe what we found on our most recent visit.

LOCAL EXPERTISE We started in Prague with member company AV Media, which joined InfoComm in 1996. CEO David Lesch, CTS serves on InfoComm’s European Council and his integration firm has embraced education and certification as part of its strategic plan. The company employs nearly 50 Certified Technology Specialists (CTS) who attest to the fact that raising their level of expertise and professionalism benefits both their company and them personally. Sitting in a room in Prague with CTS holders who live professional AV every day is a gratifying experience. It gives me a chance to reconnect with the industry and reminds my

team what really matters – that InfoComm’s job is to advance AV as an industry worldwide. And members like AV Media project their expertise to the local market. While we were in Prague, AV Media and two other AV companies held a special event for about 100 attendees – a miniature ISE, if you will – during which they educated the AV community about technology and trends. Our next stop was the beautiful town of Lindlar, Germany, near Cologne, for a visit with Lang AG, one of Europe’s largest AV rental, distribution and service companies, and its CEO Tobias Lang. The company was dedicating a new facility, the Lang Forum, which is like an AV playground – an innovation lab for demonstrating what is possible with today’s systems. AV executives from around Europe attended, appreciating Lang’s curved 4K display and collaboration technologies. The Lang campus is a perfect example of how content, space, and technology create exceptional collaborative experiences and, frankly, serves as a reminder of how cool the AV industry is today. From Lindlar, we headed to Oslo, Norway, a country where about one-quarter of European CTS holders lives. We had a chance to meet with a few leading Nordic AV companies and InfoComm members, including Viju (22 CTS holders), Caverion (16), and Atea (11). Based on the relative size of the Nordic AV market, you might not guess there are so many CTS holders in the region. Give a lot of the credit to member company Leteng AS, based in Oslo, which has worked with InfoComm to license some of our training curricula and translate it into Norwegian. By doing so, Leteng can offer AV courses in students’ native language and set them down a path towards certiﬁcation. In Norway and elsewhere in Europe, InfoComm is starting to see a virtuous cycle of CTS adoption as a differentiator among AV integrators. Company A starts to offer the training, so Company B follows suit; Company B encourages workers to raise their game, so Company C does the same. As a result, over time, the industry elevates itself in terms of technical competence and quality designs. The value of the products and the solutions they bring to customers grows, which allows them to charge

more for superior service, invest more in technology and training, and continue the cycle as the AV industry around them grows more prominent. In those few quick stops – on one of many visits to Europe – we were able to see the impact InfoComm has on people and companies, and in turn the impact our members have on customers through the excitement their solutions create. Investments in quality lead to sustainable business models.

MORE TIME AT THE RAI ISE in Amsterdam offers an opportunity for all AV companies. Yes, companies are in the throes

of commoditisation and face challenges of competition and price pressure. But the AV industry in Europe continues to raise the bar and succeed. ISE is a global gathering of AV professionals, now spanning four days. Many people try to get everything they can out of ISE in a day or so. My hope is you’ll spend more time at the RAI and find ways to do what the companies I visited recently have done: invest your time and energy in professional development, whether it’s through InfoComm, our partners at CEDIA, or the record number of exhibitors you’ll find on the show floor. You’ll already be there. Maximise your ROI in ways you

haven’t at previous ISE shows. There will be plenty of stunning new technology to experience, as there always is at ISE. But take advantage of the extra day and delve deeper into what makes you and your company successful, whether it’s attending an InfoComm class, a half-day conference, or even a 20-minute presentation at the InfoComm stand. Spend quality time with fellow attendees, share stories, and most of all, celebrate the fact that we work in such an exciting ﬁeld. If advancing the AV industry in Europe excites you as much as it does me and everyone else at InfoComm, the extra time at ISE 2016 will be time well spent.

We’re set to build on a dynamic 2015 Vin n Bruno, CEO of CEDIA, shares the association’s plans to support the growing residential technology channel and looks forward to innovations likely to make an impact at ISE 2016 and beyond First things ﬁrst: let me say how delighted, honoured and humbled I felt to take the position of CEO of CEDIA in September 2015. As the global association that represents the home technology industry, CEDIA holds important responsibilities; to be the connector, to provide vision, leadership, and education that elevates the entire residential custom installation market. I could not be happier to have the opportunity to lead the organisation, to help build on its solid foundation and position it for the future on a platform of vision, collaboration and passion. It’s clear to me that CEDIA is an inclusive body for installers, distributors and manufacturers operating at all levels of the market. Whenever and wherever home technology is professionally installed, be it in fully integrated homes, super-yachts and premium-end luxury cinemas or multiple developments, midmarket apartments and family media rooms, CEDIA is there to offer the resources for growth for both manufacturers and home technology professionals.

CEDIA EMEA 2015 has proven to be a landmark year for the body. Right now, membership of CEDIA EMEA stands at an all-time high of 720 companies. It’s a membership that reaches far beyond the UK to embrace 40 EMEA countries. Companies from outside the UK make up more than 40% of our total EMEA membership. It’s no surprise that these non-UK members are also the fastest growing component in our global CEDIA membership, which is now approaching 4,000 companies. As such, we have a responsibility

to deliver on the beneﬁts of membership by providing valuable, localised training and creating useful resources, documentation and white papers available in multiple languages. This support is not only vital, but valued by members and new companies that are interested in breaking into the sector. CEDIA’s Smart Home Recommended Wiring Guidelines document has proved to be the most popular document in our library of resources, with over 4,000 downloads since its 2012 launch. This resource is currently available in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish. To date, a total of 14 documents have been translated into multiple languages, including Dimming LED Lamps, HDMI Installation Best Practices, Network Security Best Practices and Selecting Display Size based on Room Size and Seating. Expect more for 2016. In 2015, CEDIA has taken its training on the road to France, India, Poland, Spain and South Africa to support CI expansion in these markets. More international training will take place in 2016, beginning at ISE 2016 with a comprehensive programme of invaluable training courses available from world-class instructors – turn to page 29 for details.

BRAND STRATEGY 2015 has also seen the launch of our new brand strategy and visual identity. Both were many, many months in the making. We wanted to dig deep and understand the CEDIA membership, the ways we were meeting their needs, and the places where we could improve. Out of our research, we’ve created a strategy to address these needs, some of which will happen quickly and some that will

OPINION: CEDIA 09 emerge over time. Our areas of focus are building and developing programmes that support a sustaining, year-round community; aligning education programmes to meet the needs of integrators and provide the tools they need to achieve the next level of success; and connecting our integrators and manufacturers to identify and leverage new technology to benefit all. This new CEDIA vision and brand identity will be a major focus at ISE 2016. Research tells us that our industry is going to triple in size in just five short years and it is CEDIA’s responsibility to stay ahead of technology and facilitate success. I want to partner with our manufacturer members on a new level. Initially, those plans hone in on learning about emerging technology trends prior to them becoming public, allowing us to tailor our offerings regarding these new technologies in order to give our member integrators the education and tools they need to profit from them.

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS To that end, there are a number of emerging technologies that will have a signiﬁcant impact on our industry in the years ahead. ISE 2016 will be a great place to see how these trends are evolving into hardware and software solutions

that integrators will be able to sell. • Video: High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut are two signiﬁcant changes here, otherwise known as enhanced colour volume. The result will be a picture with increased contrast and colour that will provide a huge and noticeable improvement for the viewer. • Audio: In 2016, immersive audio (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro3D) will grow in popularity among consumers as content and hardware become more readily available. Another trend will be high-resolution audio, with new streaming services supporting 96/24 – watch out for both at ISE 2016. • Voice control: there’s plenty of research going on into deep learning at the moment. As such, voice commands will become much better over the next 12-24 months, making device voice recognition a much more ﬂuid, satisfying experience in the future. • IoE: The Internet of Things is fast becoming the Internet of Everything (IoE) and connected devices will number in the tens of billions very quickly. The IoE is not just about things, it’s about a convenient life at home and everywhere. Information is available on demand and it gives us the power to control our whole world. As such, this points to tremendous opportunities for our members to customise their offerings to homeowners to provide

more robust home networks and to perfect connectivity of all their devices. • Virtual Reality: In 2016, virtual reality, augmented reality, and/or mixed reality will begin to emerge much more strongly in our sector. Hardware will from December 2015 and adoption will pick up throughout 2016. Look out for these products to be the de facto method of demonstration for integrators in three to ﬁve years from now.

ISE 2016 As an industry we are embarking on an exciting journey, full of challenges but equally, full of opportunities. The great news is that CEDIA is in better shape now than ever before to support you. My number one priority is communication: I am forward-facing by nature and I want to hear from members and what they need. I will be out proactively working with our members across the globe, but I am also always open for any member to call me at any time. So, please visit our booth at ISE 2016 (1-F21) and talk to me about your experiences and what we can do to help you prosper in this dynamic, new era.

Also this year we will be present with a stand which will give us the opportunity to show our current products and new developments, meet existing partners and customers, and also make it possible for potential new customers to experience our solutions. We have recognised that more and more end-users who have actual projects come to the show and want to decide together with their system integrators which solution is right for their requirements. Four is the magic number We look ahead to ISE 2016’s four main conferences: the Smart Building Conference and Audio Forum on Monday 8 February, and the Capital Summit and Sports Venue Technology Summit on Thursday 11 February

SMART BUILDING CONFERENCE Conferences, the day will begin with plenary sessions before opening out in a two-track structure – commercial and residential. A ﬁxture at ISE since 2014, the Smart Building Conference returns to Amsterdam on Monday 8 February 2016 with the theme ‘The network is the building’. The conference will look at the AV and IT infrastructure of smart buildings. “A lot of people have no idea what a big topic smart buildings is,” says conference chairman Bob Snyder, editor of Channel Media Europe. “That’s why we’ve been able to tackle totally new areas each year, like energy, lighting and the Internet of Things. This year we’re concentrating on where AV meets IT in the building – and that includes the IT infrastructure and anything that attaches to that infrastructure.” So the scope of this includes “cabling, control, wireless and the supplementary networking technologies that connect to the IT backbone” – such as Bluetooth and NFC. As in previous Smart Building

See Deloitte Deloitte’s new Amsterdam headquarters, known as the Edge, is considered by many to be the world’s smartest and greenest building. It has its own app, which connects and interacts with 2,500 workers on a daily basis – not only providing connected applications for office workers, but even recognising visitors’ cars as they arrive and directing them to a parking space. In one of the Morning Keynotes Erik Ubels, director information technology and workplace services at Deloitte, will discuss the technologies at work in this groundbreaking smart building. The second Morning Keynote will be given by Tom Carroll, head of EMEA corporate research at JLL. In ‘Technology and the Future of CRE’ he will address how corporate real estate will have to adapt to ‘third platform’ technologies

entering the workplace, which will open up new ways of working and consequently affect the way workplaces are designed. Turning to the commercial track: wireless headset manufacturer (and ﬁrst time ISE exhibitor) Plantronics has done a lot of work researching how office design, and the very nature of office work, is changing. Philip Vanhoutte, the company’s EMEA MD, will present this in a session entitled ‘From Office Design to Soundscaping…’. He will also discuss a Uniﬁed Collaborative ITC infrastructure which embraces wearables and contextual intelligence. In ‘The Battle for Smart Building: An Integrator’s Perspective’, Mike Brooman, CEO of Vanti, will argue that new collaborative ways of working are required among smart building stakeholders when commissioning building-wide technology. The blistering pace of development in smart technology, he believes, makes new demands on design, construction and technology teams – and greater mutual understanding is required of what is required, and at what stage of the process.

Additionally, an expert from consulting engineering ﬁrm Arup will talk about where AV meets IT in the smart building. Residential trends The residential track will be chaired by Kris Hogg, chairman of CEDIA. This will commence with a Keynote from Dave Pedigo, senior director of learning & emerging technologies at CEDIA. ‘Technology and the Home in the Year 2020’ will look at the innovations that are shaping the home of the future, including contextual awareness and the intuitive home, and delivering the ‘life lived best at home’ experience. In ‘New Era of Data-Driven Lighting Services’, Bluetooth Smart will come under the spotlight. This connection technology – also used in smart watches and activity trackers – can also be used to synchronously control 500 lights in a hotel lobby or set up an advanced building automation system. Because it enforces all layers of the communications stack and makes the onboarding process part of the standard,

Bluetooth guarantees interoperability. This session will be presented by Szymon Slupik, president and CTO of Silvair. Later on, Philip Vanhoutte of Plantronics will switch tracks and present ‘Meet the Smart Home Client – a 15 Year Flashback’. Here he will outline his personal quest for a smart home: how he scouted the different options among technologies and installers; how design and implementation progressed; some ‘disappointments, frustrations and resurrections’ when reality set in; and he will conclude with recommendations, wishes and food for thought. Additionally, CEDIA’s Kris Hogg will talk about the ‘top of the range’ of the smart-home business – the connectivity requirements of multi-dwelling units. Organised by Italian publication Connessioni in conjunction with Integrated Systems Europe, the Audio Forum makes its third ISE appearance in February with a wide-ranging theme of ‘Theories, Technologies, Legends and (True and False) Myths about Audio’. Devised to appeal to systems integrators, installers and other audio professionals, the programme will acknowledge the complexity of acoustical science and systems speciﬁcation with a series of presentations and discussions. “In contrast to previous editions, which had more of a purely academic feel, at ISE there will be a greater opportunity for discussion between attendees and speakers in order to better understand some of the technologies that shape our industry,” says Connessioni’s Chiara Benedettini.

acoustic designer and consultant Donato Masci – who will contribute throughout the day – will examine modern loudspeaker technologies and, in particular, those scenarios where line array technology isn’t necessarily able to address all of the coverage issues in a venue. They will consider the tools and techniques available to engineers that can help provide those essential fixes. In an extension to this subject area, the second session will examine some key issues surrounding filtering technologies, particularly Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) and Finite Impulse Response (FIR). “They are now present on every datasheet and constitute a major point of discussion between industry colleagues, but there is still a lot of confusion about their usage, so we aim to clear up some of those issues,” says Benedettini.

CAPITAL SUMMIT 2015 saw the first Capital Summit to be hosted at ISE – and it’s back by popular demand on Thursday 11 February at ISE 2016. If you missed it last year, you need to know that it’s designed, among other things, to bring together companies looking for investment with financial professionals and business experts from the world of investments, mergers, and acquisitions, including equity funds and strategic investors. It’s hosted by John Stiernberg of Stiernberg Consulting and MediaBridge Capital Advisors. Stiernberg Consulting has a 20+ year track record in helping AV and IT companies succeed. “The first Capital Summit at ISE was a solid success,” smiles Stiernberg. “The panel members represented a fascinating and relevant mix of strategic, financial and hybrid investors, each with stories to tell and unique perspectives on the AV/IT industry. The audience was also diverse and asked great questions during the interactive Q&A session. The

networking session lasted long after the bar closed – another good indication that the event accomplished what we set out for it to do.” While the basic event format will remain the same at ISE 2016, the panel members will be all new compared to the 2015 line-up. This, according to Stiernberg, will assure a fresh and current perspective. Interesting developments The year since last ISE has seen some interesting developments for Stiernberg Consulting, with more IPTV and video ﬁrms joining the company’s growing client list; an increase in interest from international – i.e. non-US – organisations; and a great deal of focus on the rapidly changing dynamics of an industry which is seeing the previously disparate worlds of AV and IT learning how to work together and complement each other’s skills. Stiernberg also co-produced and moderated the Capital Summit at CEDIA Expo during 2015.

also assess how end-users should interpret the data and extract what they need from it in order to optimise their applications. The ﬁnal primary session will return to a topic that has been a signiﬁcant element of previous Audio Forum events – audio networking transportation. With the AVB/TSN standards continuing to achieve traction, and the AES67 standard enjoying dramatic adoption during 2015, networked audio is increasingly reaching across applications and user groups. “We plan to take a comprehensive look at the latest developments in transportation protocols, touching on trends, individual perspectives and more,” notes Benedettini. “After many years of progress, some of these protocols have really started to achieve mass adoption, while others have only partially achieved their goals. In this session we will look at the ‘whys’, ‘wherefores’ and ‘what nexts’ of audio transportation.” The day will conclude with a

further networking opportunity over coffee and a thorough Q&A session. In addition to Masci – who is the acoustic designer and consultant at Studio Sound Service in Florence, Italy, and has worked in ﬁelds including acoustic correction and noise emission impact – there will also be participants from the AES, who have joined a number of previous Audio Forum events. “Like ISE in February, the interaction between the panel and the audience was excellent,” notes Stiernberg. “Overall, the buzz surrounding CEDIA Expo was strong, indicating a stabilising US market for residential systems.” Stiernberg says that going into the 2015 Capital Summit at ISE, he was cautiously optimistic about the AV and IT industry’s ability to attract and retain the capital needed for both innovation and sustainable growth. Now he’s even more conﬁdent that qualiﬁed investors are not only interested, but in it for the long haul.

“Take ISE 2015,” he says. “There were a few companies in the audience that were just starting the process of developing an exit strategy and preparing for selling. They learned a lot about how to think about the process, how long things take, and how to prevent the mistakes that so many others have made. “And,” Stiernberg goes on, “for seasoned investors, quite a few personal connections were made. “The most gratifying thing for me,” he continues, “is when an audience member comes up to me the next day on the show ﬂoor or sends an email after ISE and says something like “That was a great event. I was heading down the wrong path and am glad that I learned a better to approach to getting my company ready to sell or reﬁnance. Thank you.””

Essential and sustainable What’s behind that conﬁdence? “Despite global socio-political and economic challenges, our industry provides the tools for communications, life safety and building control,” he explains. “Those are all essential and sustainable compared to adventure travel, gaming, or action sports, for example. There’s nothing wrong with those industries, of course, but in tough times, investors get even more conservative. So: while the amount of funds available is hard to quantify, general availability is good now, and for the near term.” According to Stiernberg, those who attend the Capital Summit see real beneﬁt from doing so.

International locations The ISE 2016 event will be the ninth Audio Forum in total, with the 2015 schedule having visited Milan, Mumbai and Beijing, in addition to Amsterdam. The 2016 agenda is expected to be similarly extensive, and Benedettini is looking forward to a strong ﬁrst event of the year at ISE. “Audio and sound diffusion are such complex issues,” she says. “From a technical point of view, they are intrinsically related to – and require an understanding

SPORTS VENUE TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT The ďŹ rst SVG Europe-organised conference event of 2016 will take place on Thursday 11 February during ISE 2016, and is set to examine the changing technical provision and expectations of the contemporary connected stadium. To be held in Room E102 of the RAI Exhibition Centre between 09:30 and 13:30, Sports Venue Technology Summit 2016 features a programme devised by SVG Europe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is a trade association for professionals working in television sports production â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in conjunction with leading audio consultant and project manager Roland Hemming. The founder of RH Consulting, Hemmingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 28-year career in the industry has taken him to live events, construction sites, hotels, rail facilities, cruise ships, theatres, corporate AV, broadcast, education and stadia. Pivotal to the event will be a recurring strand examining the processes and possible challenges involved in making a stadium run smoothly on the day of a major sports event that is being broadcast to national and/or international audiences. Keynote looks to future ISE is helping exhibitors and visitors make the most of the final day of ISE 2016 with a host of events, activities and initiatives From an inspiring keynote to free parking, the final day of ISE 2016 looks set to be a fitting climax to the first four-day show. On Friday 12 February the Closing Keynote will be given by Dr Michio Kaku, a recognised expert in Einstein’s unified field theory who has unparalleled skill in predicting trends affecting business, commerce and finance based on the latest scientific research. The keynote will be held in the RAI Forum, and will begin at 09:00, half an hour before the show opens. Dr Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair in Theoretical Physics at the City University of New York. He received his PhD in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972 and been a professor at CUNY for almost 30 years. He has also taught at Harvard and Princeton and his goal is to complete Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything”. He is the author of several international bestsellers, including Physics of the Future, which became the basis of a six-hour TV special on the Science Channel

called Futurescape, and Physics of the Impossible. His latest book, The Future of the Mind, details the breakthroughs being made in neuroscience, which are finally beginning to unravel the mysteries of the human brain. It is with this in mind that the 2016 show app has been developed. Available now, the app can be used before arriving in Amsterdam to create a personalised agenda for each day of the show and from the showfloor to make it easy to navigate around the halls thanks to the interactive floorplan and the ability to search for exhibitors. Built in social media functions mean the latest Facebook and Twitter updates are on hand. Users can also earn points, badges and prizes for being active in the app during ISE 2016. Check the daily leaderboard for the latest standings.

As visitors navigate the showfloor they can update their newsfeed by sharing photos, comments and notifications about which session, event or stand they’ve visited. In return, it is possible to stay on top of the latest news, see what people are saying, view photos from events and find trending sessions and topics. The app is also designed to be a useful tool for networking. This function uses shared interests, professional titles and other information to match professional connections. Four days, four Show Floor Theatres ISE’s Show Floor Theatres have once again been expanded – with audio joining commercial, residential and uniﬁed communications as an area of focus As ISE 2016 moves to a four-day show, so it will see the addition of a fourth Show Floor Theatre – the Audio Solutions Theatre, sponsored by Tannoy. Situated on stand 7-Z160, it joins the already established Residential Solutions and Commercial Solutions Theatres, both sponsored by KNX, and the Uniﬁed Communications Theatre sponsored by Crestron. All four Show Floor Theatres

will be in operation from 11:00 to 16:30 from Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February. They will feature up to 150 free-to-attend 20-minute sessions from exhibitors, endusers, trade associations, business consultancies and respected thought leaders. Attendance is on a ﬁrst-come ﬁrst-served basis, with capacity limited to a maximum of 60 individuals per theatre.

At the Residential Solutions Theatre (5-S160) attendees will experience case-study presentations looking at the real-world beneﬁts of home entertainment, building automation and energy management systems in a residential environment, while the Commercial Solutions Theatre (8-D360) will focus on the creative and practical aspects of system

design and the customer beneﬁts of new technologies. The focus at the Uniﬁed Communications Theatre (9-A140) will be the practical aspects of implementing collaboration and communication systems within enterprises, while audio technological innovation and the practical experiences and challenges of integrating and installing audio in the commercial

and residential sectors will be key to presentations at the Audio Theatre. All four Show Floor Theatres have been conceptually designed and executed by event management specialist Improve and will feature the latest in AV and live technology. So You Need to Interface With BMS? Speaker: Dave Robinson, Sensible Heat Building management systems (or BMS) is a catch-all term that covers electronic controls used to control mechanical services in buildings; very common in commercial buildings, BMS is now increasingly being found in many high-end residential properties. Traditionally supplied by specialist contractors as part of the mechanical package, custom installers are often required to interface with these systems, or sometimes asked to provide the BMS themselves. Our ability to support and maintain security, control and media delivery in the connected home through remote network-based systems, port forwarding routes and VPNs, relies on the bandwidth available from service providers. Increasingly this is insufficient for proper diagnosis and resolution. Furthermore, the slow migration to IPV6 by ISPs has led to the introduction of CGN (Carrier Grade NAT)/NAT444, which ‘breaks’ the whole concept of inbound port forwarding and VPNs. Drone Arena debuts in 2016 An exciting new addition for the 2016 edition of ISE is the Drone Arena, hosted by Stampede Global. Located at Park Foyer (outside the back of Hall 8), the arena will welcome leading manufacturers and the latest product innovations in drone technology, and will cover professional, commercial and consumer opportunities. It will feature education sessions and live demonstrations on every day of the show. With huge growth predicted in the use and application of drone technology, Kevin Kelly, Stampede president and COO (pictured), believes the AV/IT integration industry is perfectly poised to take advantage: “The great thing for our industry is, in a B2B world you need a consultative

sales process to make this thing work. Not every end user has the same needs, desires or goals, and so it’s not something that can be satisﬁed through the normal retail channel. Immersed in audio Arcam and Genelec will team up to present the Dolby Atmos Immersive Theatre at ISE 2016. The new addition to the show promises breathtaking sound experiences through playbacks of twochannel music, music videos and blockbuster movies. It is the first time that Arcam and Genelec have teamed up for such a project. Located in Rooms E105 and E106, the Dolby Atmos Immersive Theatre will host a programme

Making it easy to do business with M2D ISE’s ‘dating service’ for manufacturers and distributors will return to ISE 2016 in the form of the M2D (Manufacturer to Distributor) programme, sponsored by Green Hippo. Launched in 2014, M2D is a portal that exists to put manufacturers and distributors in touch with each other. At ISE 2015, 176 manufacturers registered with the programme, posting 614 requests for distributors. Scattered throughout the ISE halls on screens

– in the Business Lounge, for example – lists of territories for which manufacturers are looking for distributors will be displayed, making it easy for visitors to spot opportunities to enhance their business. The list can also be downloaded to a visitor’s mobile phone or tablet on site to review later at their leisure. There are over 1,000 exhibitors at ISE 2016, so the number of products on display at the show must run into ﬁve ﬁgures. Over the next few pages, we highlight some of the key technology categories at the show, and present a small selection of new products that have caught our eye so far

IP is everywhere Of all the major themes that will dominate ISE 2016, one is likely to be more widely discussed than any other. The AV industry has transitioned – is continuing to transition – to an IP-based view of the world. Where once, the AV industry was an island of technology, it is now integrating within the broader business technology landscape. Where once, it developed and promoted its own connectivity standards, it is now embracing the network standards of the data centre with audio over IP, voice over IP and video over IP – not to mention IPTV. The AV world is not just moving

away from its historical point-to-point paradigm and becoming networkcentric, but is also emphasising scalability, reliability and remote/ centralised monitoring, for example. Visitors from the IT world will find themselves very much at home. It’s also, unquestionably, a learning opportunity – the chance to find out more about how the AV world will fit with the IT world. Signal switching, for example, is becoming less proprietary and is moving towards standard managed Ethernet switches. Many vendors will be showcasing products specifically designed to transmit video

our transportation networks, our roads, our communications, essential services like water and power, and our out-ofhome security. This means that control room displays have to be completely reliable and capable of continuous, fault-free operation for very long periods of time. Secondly, control rooms are usually 24/7 environments, in constant use. The world does not stop to allow a systems integrator to service a screen, ﬁx a problem or upgrade to cope with new requirements and new challenges. As well as reliability, the ability to adapt to new challenges is vital. Thirdly, control rooms represent major capital investment, with an expected average lifespan of twenty years or more. There are few manufacturers substantial enough to be able to guarantee support of an installation over that kind of timeframe. Finally, control room installation or refurbishment projects are expensive in terms of downtime and labour costs. An integrator has to be sure that their proposed solution is going to deliver straight out of the box, because there is no room for error. The complexity of control room data infrastructure can potentially mean a great deal of uncertainty as to how a system will perform in any given

Why specialisation is critical for control room display ISE is a stunning spectacle of ultra-modern technologies - a place where visitors come to feast their eyes on the latest displays and AV systems. Mitsubishi Electric has been a supporter of ISE since the beginning, and in that time we’ve both seen and experienced big changes in technology and in how it is applied in the context of our industry. If I were asked to sum up in one word how Mitsubishi Electric’s product range has evolved since we began exhibiting at ISE, that word would be ‘specialisation’. Mitsubishi’s core business is large-scale engineering projects such as power generation, transportation infrastructure, telecoms and factory automation. Our professional video wall displays business grew out of those activities, and over time has become increasingly focused on developing solutions for the most demanding control room display applications. Control room display has become a highly specialised area, requiring particular expertise on behalf of both integrator and hardware manufacturer, and there are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, control room applications are always concerned with the safety of critical systems. Systems that we all rely on for our daily lives;

communications… There is also growing awareness of the potential impact of growing volumes of video traffic over the network – a phenomenon that will grow not only because of the increasing use of video, but also higher resolutions and deeper colour spaces (‘high dynamic range’ – HDR) meaning higher data rates (often requiring minimal latency): as such, codecs like H.265 are receiving signiﬁcant attention in order to mitigate the impact. It’s not just the networking standards, but other open standards too. ISE also provides the chance to

The ANT-36000 universal 100 channel decoder is a new full HD 1080p60 ONVIF decoder, designed to decode 1080p60 ONVIF RTSP, Mpegs TS and RTMP streams from third party products and cameras. Housed in a small 135mm x 135mm x 35mm case, the unit can be desk mounted and a 1U rack mount kit is available for three decoders per 1U rack. Up to 100 stream URLs can be pre-programmed and selected individually using a remote control app for iPhone, iPad or Android phones and tablets. The ANT36000 can be programmed to automatically decode a number of streams in sequence for use as a spot monitor. Video output is either via HDMI, HD-SDI or scaled composite.

Utilising the ONVIF CCTV standard, the ANT-36000 can decode any ONVIF compliant network camera with plain or authenticated RTSP steams, both basic and digest. It supports two-way audio AAC or G711 decode, USB recording, RS485 PTZ control, alarm and sensor interfaces as well as PoE.

With six video inputs and two video outputs – four HDMI 1.4 and two TPS (HDBaseT) inputs, plus two independent HDMI outputs which both have mirrored TPS (HDBaseT) outputs – the MMX6x2-HT can handle 4K UHD and 3D signals. TDM750 makes its debut BLUEBELL OPTICOM Making its debut at ISE is the TDM750 from Bluebell Opticom, a rack-mounted solution for the transport of HD-SDI and 100BaseT Ethernet signals. Requiring only two ﬁbres with an option for single-ﬁbre operation, the TDM750 is perfect for smaller robotic/ POV camera systems that need only a single video path and bidirectional data via Ethernet. The unit can be used in concert halls, broadcast and security applications. Also being showcased are the BC and BN Series that allow customers to choose the signals they need in convenient, robust, throw-down packaging that can be ordered in multi-

Sounds like progress ISE 2016 visitors can expect to see plenty of evidence to underline the rapid progress of audio over IP, as well as the continuing evolution of loudspeaker technology and the rise of immersive sound environments, writes David Davies Regular visitors to ISE will be well aware that IP-based networking has been a prevalent theme at recent shows. They are also likely to be unsurprised by the news that AoIP is again set to dominate the audio-related headlines at ISE 2016. Underlining many of the developments showcased at ISE will be the AES67 standard, which guarantees certain interoperability requirements between existing IP-based audio technologies. A 22-device demo at an event in New York last September

indicated the extent to which leading manufacturers are now supporting the standard, so expect to see more compliant products announced during ISE week. And although it might be a little too early for specific vendor announcements, there is likely to be plenty of conversation on the showfloor about AES70 – the forthcoming proposed standard which is based on the work of the OCA Alliance and defines a scalable control-protocol architecture for the control and monitoring of professional media

networks. But while the continuing stream of MADI-supporting products will ensure that connectivity won’t be entirely dominated by IP-based developments, networking will by no means be the only ‘trending’ audio topic at ISE 2016. The increased popularity of selfpowered loudspeakers for a wide variety of install applications has been a recurring theme of recent years, and one should expect this to continue at February’s gathering. This development has obviously represented a challenge for

The RedNet AM2 stereo audio monitoring unit combines headphone and line outputs for ﬂexible monitoring of signals sourced from the Dante network. The latest in a line of Dante AoIP products from Focusrite, RedNet AM2 features a quarter-inch frontpanel headphone socket plus a pair of balanced line outputs with male XLR connectors mounted on the rear panel, which can be used for loudspeaker monitoring and other applications. vendors and technology specialists are working on new multichannel systems for the residential market, while broadcasters are investing time and energy in new mixing techniques and interfaces that will allow viewers to optimise programme sound to suit their speciﬁc tastes. Although it might be a few years yet before this kind of functionality is available in every home, it’s likely that ISE 2016 will witness more than a few tantalising signs of this exciting new era of home audio.

Multi-room music over IP REVOX Voxnet is a new Ethernet-based system that, says developer Revox, is able to deliver synchronised, CDquality music to several rooms. Thanks to the creation of individual user proﬁles, the system knows ‘who last listened to what’. Corresponding station favourites and playlists can be called up at the touch of a smartphone or tablet app, a wall-mounted panel or infrared remote control. The central communication unit is the Voxnet server, installed on a Synology NAS. All services and licences run on the server, which can also be used as a music archive. Audio streaming services such as Spotify or Deezer, as well as products such as an Apple TV or

What’s new? What isn’t! As the digital signage market matures, it’s seeing new technologies, new products, new entrants and new alliances as, Ian McMurray ﬁnds out The buzz-phrase in digital signage you’re most likely to hear at ISE is “the customer journey”. As a concept, it’s been around for a while – but now, as digital signage increasingly enters the consciousness of brands and retailers, it’s being seen as a natural component in how customers ﬁnd, choose, buy from and remain loyal to them. In the same breath, you’re likely to hear the word “omnichannel” – in other words, the number of ways in which brands can engage and interact with consumers. In technology and product terms, that’s going to mean increased emphasis

on integrating mobile devices with screens – a phenomenon far from unique to digital signage. As the digital signage market grows, it’s inevitable that, in hardware terms, it will begin to fragment as it addresses the speciﬁc needs of niche markets. A ‘low end’ and ‘high end’ are beginning to emerge, offering different levels of price/performance. Solutions are, for example, becoming available based on the Raspberry Pi platform, and system-on-chip (SoC) solutions, integrated within screens, are becoming increasingly pervasive.

These are important developments because they’re bringing costs down, making digital signage solutions more widely available. At the other end of the spectrum, users are becoming familiar with the beneﬁts of digital signage and are starting to ask more of systems. That’s driving the high end, with large numbers – 24 or more – of HD outputs, for example. The focus on ‘green’ isn’t going away, either, and that’s seeing growing numbers of manufacturers touting the environmentally friendly nature of their players and screens,

with lower power consumption. In terms of screens, new screen sizes are starting to emerge with diagonals of, for example, 43in, 48in and 49in, creating new price/ performance points. While this will create new opportunities, it will also create headaches for existing deployments looking to grow. ISE will also see an increasing number of screens with digital signage capability built in – again, creating new opportunities. And speaking of screens… ISE 2016 will see new display devices that extend the reach of digital

signage to, for example, shelf edges, allowing integrators to propose innovative, differentiated solutions. Digital signage software is also undergoing a period of change, with new entrants surpassing the popularity of more-established players, and new alliances being formed between software vendors and hardware manufacturers. There’s also growing emphasis on integrating digital signage into an organisation’s IT system – providing access to, for example, CRM and inventory management/pricing systems.

BITVU New at ISE will be Spark, a lowpriced, full-spec 4G digital signage player. Rugged and compact, Spark enables the installation of digital signage in any location, without expensive cabling or broadband contracts, using Bitvu’s network meshing technology. With Bitvu’s cloud-based ScreenSpace server, users can create and upload content from the comfort of their desk, with updates transmitted instantly by 4G to the Spark player wherever it is located in the world. Bitvu’s network technology allows customers to create a group of screens that are served from a single Spark 4G device, relaying content via WiFi or wired Ethernet to multiple connected screens.

Mobile digital signage BROADSIGN INTERNATIONAL Digital signage software provider BroadSign has added a mobile solution to its portfolio. BroadSign Mobile is described as a technology agnostic, dynamically generated mobile experience, seamlessly integrated into the company’s existing campaign workﬂow and proof of performance metrics system. It aims to give network operators and advertisers the multichannel opportunity to extend messaging across screens and spend more time with target viewers. Fully incorporated into the BroadSign CMS, it allows network operators to schedule the mobile component to their digital signage campaign in BroadSign Administrator. The product is compatible with any mobile technology that works

with URLs such as QR codes, NFC and beacons, and generates a dynamic menu of campaigns on a smartphone as opposed to a single static redirect from the display. The advertising community is likely to appreciate the overall proof of performance report that tracks both display impressions and mobile interactions, measurements that help in obtaining ad dollars from budgets additional to out-of-home (OOH). In November 2014, BroadSign announced its partnership with Blue Bite, a leader in mobile marketing solutions. The two companies will further this relationship by integrating BroadSign

Signage in DIY superstores is a major focus for dimedis during this year’s show, as illustrated in the company’s interactive Bosch Experience Zone, which is run in conjunction with the power tools division at Robert Bosch. The Bosch Experience Zone, located on the dimedis stand, is a shop-in-shop project for DIY superstores worldwide, with the objective of creating a brand island in which customers receive information and inspiration and are able to try out products in a practiceoriented environment. The Bosch Experience Zone integrates interactive digital signage into modern shopﬁtting. The central information terminal is run using the kompas digital signage software by dimedis. The terminal aims to boost customer loyalty and encourages customers to make purchases and interact using a touchscreen.

A new era of home entertainment The concept of the smart home has dominated the residential technology debate in recent years, but the buzz around a new generation of home entertainment systems should not be overshadowed, writes David Davies As the notion of the connected residence has gradually morphed into that of the smart home, the ability to forecast the technological infrastructure of the average house ten or even ﬁve years into the future has become progressively more challenging. But what does seem fairly certain is that an increasing number of home systems will co-exist on the same network, and that the homeowner will soon have no trouble in controlling pretty much everything from one integrated user interface.

The ability to access entertainment anywhere and anyhow in the home is obviously a major driver here. In particular, ISE 2016 visitors should look out for new developments surrounding wireless audio, with residential customers now facing an increasing array of multiroom solutions that allow them to stream music from their own home network, as well as smart devices and online services. Also on the home entertainment front, expect to see plenty of new

solutions that support 4K UHD. The new format has been on its way towards the mainstream for several years now, but perhaps chastised by their experiences with 3D content producers’ willingness to commit to 4K has been variable until fairly recently. But with 4K streaming services commencing roll-out and a growing number of broadcasters looking to capture major sports events in the new format, the case for consumers to invest is now looking strong. And while prices at the lower end of

the TV set market are becoming more accessible, there will also be plenty of offers to suit the high-end as manufacturers deliver larger screen sizes with capability for 4K and HDR (High Dynamic Range). For those viewers who really want to go the extra mile, then an immersive audio infrastructure that ensures the sound is every bit as impactful as the visual is increasingly de rigueur. Immersive audio – or 3D Audio or Next Generation Audio, as you may prefer – is already a reality The KP-6 keypad is designed for use with the Mirage Audio System

Music server and amplifier launched for Asano BASALTE Claimed to be the world’s first native KNX multi-room audio system, Asano amplifies and distributes uncompressed hi-fi music in residential installations. Now Basalte says it is completing the Asano solution by introducing the S4 music server and M4 amplifier at ISE 2016. The Belgian manufacturer says Asano offers “excellent” sound quality in a “virtually unlimited” number of rooms. It allows installers and users to freely locate music sources and amplifiers anywhere in the house. The S4 hosts four digital audio streams with extensive room management tools and user

profile options. It allows users to stream local content from an iOS device to individual rooms, or to multiple rooms at once. Additionally, it can access internet radio stations, as well as access a music library from a NAS. The Asano app and KNX integration offers control of the music; the user interface enables quick access to the most important controls, while keeping all other functions easily accessible. Reinvention and acceleration The unified communications industry continues to reinvent itself, finds Ian McMurray, with the move away from dedicated conferencing spaces continuing to accelerate In a recent survey of 1,000 executives in North America, it transpired that most didn’t know what ‘unified communications’ meant. It would be easy to laugh or shake your head, but it perhaps reveals something important about an industry that still hasn’t completely established itself. Or, perhaps, one that hasn’t finished reinventing itself. Unified Communication – UC – is an industry in transition, and that’s likely to be very evident at ISE. To cloud or not to cloud? Hardware or software? In-house or managed/ SaaS? And what about mobile? For sure, bulky equipment carts

are not the ‘mobile’ that used to be at the heart of videoconferencing systems, and are unlikely to be much in evidence. This year, more than ever, you’ll see a broad range of VC/ UC solutions for a variety of use cases – from purpose-built videoconferencing rooms to the increasingly popular huddle rooms and on through desktops to tablets and phones. If anything, so-called huddle room appliances seem likely to dominate, with dedicated displays, cameras, processors and audio. Adapting UC for speciﬁc classes of user, rather than general purpose,

all-singing, all-dancing systems, is also likely to be a key theme. “Collaboration technology for the workplace of the future is not a one-size-ﬁts-all proposition,” one industry insider recently remarked. There was a time, for example, when UC was all about ‘immersion’ – but that didn’t prove hugely popular, and faded from view. Now, with speciﬁc user applications starting to be the focus of manufacturers, immersion is making something of a comeback. In a similar vein, manufacturers are starting to introduce systems that are easily customisable for individual types of user – but that

still maintain uniformity across the organisation. Expect also to hear everyone talking about Microsoft’s Skype for Business – formerly known as Lync – which came to market shortly after ISE 2015, and about WebRTC, with its promise of plug-in free real-time communications, enhanced security and lower cost. Both promise to be highly disruptive, with WebRTC forecast to serve more than six billion devices by 2019. While interoperability has long been the watchword of UC, increasing numbers of manufacturers are looking to

offer a total solution – helping users avoid potentially timeconsuming integration issues. That will see new hardware devices like intelligent cameras that automatically focus on the speaker, or multiple cameras built into screen bezels or systems that can ‘recreate’ the transmitted image to make best use of multi-screen systems. Other hardware developments are likely to include growing numbers of integrated audio/video/ content sharing devices that can turn any room – including those not natively equipped with video facilities – into a UC room.

The great unification continues There are bound to be plenty of exciting specific announcements about new smart building solutions, but expect the accelerating adoption of IP to dominate the conversation at ISE 2016, writes David Davies It was apparent at the time of last year’s ISE – and it’s even more evident as the 2016 edition appears on the horizon. The deepening recognition that IP networking provides not just the foundation but also the future of the ‘smart building’ continues to dominate the debate in this increasingly dynamic sector. For proof, just consider the theme of the Smart Building Conference (SBC), a long-running fixture of ISE ‘week’ and this year taking place on 8 February. Entitled

‘The Network is the Building’, the conference will explore “how the IP backbone changes the way we work, the way we live, and the new services now possible with today’s building”. From a new generation of ‘smart lighting’ products to more tightly integrated building-wide control systems, visitors can also expect to see this seismic transition reﬂected on the showﬂoor. One inevitable side-effect of this more closely-intermeshed future is a dramatic increase in the

amount of data that needs to be monitored and managed. ‘Big data’ arrives with big expectations – and for many potential customers, at least for now, big uncertainties. The need for solutions that are tapped for smart building applications to be flexible and scalable should be a given at this point, but an increasing abundance of high-profile cyber attacks means that security is destined to rise ever-higher up the priority list. ISE in link-up with UNESCO charity The event’s organisers are behind a drive to install and equip an E-Start-Up Academy in Moldova

UNESCO Special Ambassador Dr Ute-Henriette Ohoven with ISE managing director Mike Blackman Integrated Systems Events will be publicising its latest charitable initiative at ISE 2016. In recent years, its charitable SeeHearTouch work that has subsidised the design, installation and support of cinema theatre systems in children’s’ hospices, with equipment being donated by AV manufacturers. This programme is now being expanded to include the installation and equipping of a new

E-Start-Up Academy in Chisinau, Moldova. The move is the result of a link-up with Education for Children in Need, an international educational programme headed by UNESCO Special Ambassador Dr Ute-Henriette Ohoven. The programme provides educational and vocational training to stimulate social development through the provision of quality education and

gender equality. Since its launch 20 years ago the programme has supported more than 450 different projects in over 100 countries working alongside ‘the poorest of the poor’. Dr Ohoven has been involved with the programme since its inception. The academy will be constructed to provide a base for the running of modern educational programmes that cover web, IT, economics,

marketing and business English. Specifically, the course in Chisinau will cover the basics of economics, accounting and the creation of business plans. Plus, there will be an optional online module designed to lay the groundwork for students to take the InfoComm Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) exam as well as the opportunity to access the CEDIA track of residential networking courses leading to certified networking credentials. Ultimately, the goal of the programme will be that graduates gain the necessary skills and confidence to return to their local community and launch a sustainable micro, small or medium-sized business. The five-week course will seek to train 400 Moldovans annually, of whom 50% will be women. As well as teaching practical business skills there will be a focus on personal development for students. After course completion, local entrepreneurs and businesspeople will mentor graduates to increase their chances of success. ISE’s decision to fund local installers and integrators is to ensure that the academy receives full ongoing technical support once the initial equipment installation has been completed.
