BY PADDY BAKER A joint venture between the Amsterdam Light Festival, RAI Amsterdam and ISE, the new Masters of Projection Mapping (WMPM) competition will see specially created content from five international video artists projected onto the EYE Filmmuseum, alongside the river IJ. This is a modern building whose façade is a complicated arrangement of irregular geometric shapes, onto which the video content will be mapped. Each artwork, which runs for six minutes, will begin with projection onto two 40m x 15m water screens in front of the museum. These screens will then be lowered to allow the projection to take place on the museum façade. Competition technical partners include Panasonic, disguise (formerly D3 Technologies) Lightware and Alcons Audio, which have all supplied eqiupment; and local integrator BeamSystems, which is responsible for the AV installation. Cultural event organiser Artifex is also a partner. The projections from the five shortlisted artists will be shown from 14 January, with the featured artist changing daily. The judging panel, led by Amsterdam Light Festival creative director Lennart Booij, will convene on the evening of Thursday 8 February, when all five videos will be shown, with accompanying audio. A choice

Use free invitation code 401799 of hospitality cruise packages for the evening, sailing from the RAI, is available from Artifex – these can be perused via the ISE website. Rembrandt Boswijk, technical project manager for WMPM, said: “After a helicopter, the best place to see the projections is from a boat, because you can move around and look from different angles.” Other key vantage points for seeing the projections include the quay near Central station and the Amsterdam Tower, which is very close to the Filmmuseum. Boswijk added: “What I think is going to be a challenge for the artists is there’s no point that gives you an overview of the whole building – you can only see part of it. So that could be an interesting thing creatively… They have to keep in mind that people will be viewing it from different places – and the view is different from every position.” The competition comes to a climax on Friday at ISE 2018, when the World Masters of Projection Mapping Presentation and Showcase will be held during the show. This will include presentations from all five finalists, and the announcement of the winning entry. Turn to page 16 to read more about the technical set-up of the competition, and to page 18 for more about the winner’s presentation. www.iseurope.org/world-mastersprojection-mapping

WELCOME FROM ISE

A busy week in Amsterdam I

Integrated Systems Events’ managing director Mike Blackman selects some highlights from this year’s ISE ’m delighted to welcome you to this Preview Edition of the ISE Daily, ahead of the 15th edition of Integrated Systems Europe. The show has grown steadily since its inception in 2004, and this year sees the addition of Hall 15 to our floor plan to accommodate the increased demand for exhibitor space. As the exhibition has grown, so has the programme of events that runs alongside it. This year we have a bigger-than-ever offering of conferences, seminars, professional development sessions and technology showcases during the whole of the week of ISE, beginning ahead of the exhibition on the Monday and running through to the Friday. Many of these are brand new for ISE 2018, while others are popular favourites that are returning once more.

Key themes One of the key themes of ISE 2018 is XR – an umbrella term covering virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. These exciting new technologies will be examined in the XR Summit, a new conference taking place on the Tuesday, that will discuss how XR can be deployed across a wide variety of business sectors. It is complemented by the XR Technology Zone on the show floor, featuring live demonstrations – many of which you can take an active part in. ISE is spreading its wings in Amsterdam beyond the perimeter of the RAI with the new Masters of Projection Mapping Festival. This is an exciting international competition for video artists that we are pleased to present as a joint venture with Amsterdam RAI and the Amsterdam Light Festival. It promises to bring some spectacular video mapping to the exterior of the EYE Filmmuseum – and the final day of ISE will see the competition winner presented with their prize during a special awards ceremony, where all the finalists’ work will be shown and discussed. Projection mapping will also be one of the technologies under discussion at another new ISE event, blooloopLIVE, which takes place on the Friday morning. Many visitor attractions are extending their hours of operation, and increasing their footfall, by holding night-time events. This half-day conference will examine the innovations that can help to bring the wow factor to this nascent market.

Increasing influence Since this time last year, one of the owners of Integrated Systems Europe has changed its name. InfoComm International has rebranded to AVIXA, as part of the association’s drive to widen its remit and influence beyond its traditional membership. Part and parcel of this is the TIDE Conference, which addresses the creative side of AV – taking user experience as the starting point, rather than technical specs. This had its first outing at the InfoComm show in Orlando last June, and comes to Amsterdam on the Monday before the show floor opens. These are also exciting times for CEDIA, our other owner, which opened its new global headquarters – which contains a world-class training facility and experience centre – last November. Following its

4

I

restructuring to a single global entity, the association is busy formulating a new strategy – and consulting its membership as part of this. Both CEDIA and AVIXA are offering a wide range of professional development sessions – from free short sessions (AVIXA FlashTracks and CEDIA Talks) to hands-on workshops. This year, both associations are offering All Access Passes that cover entry to almost their entire education programmes. And if you’re interested in commercial and residential technology, you’ll probably want to invest in a SuperPass, which is equivalent to an All Access Pass from both associations. You can buy these, and sign up for any AVIXA or CEDIA education session, at the online shop on ISE’s website. Our Show Floor Theatres are a convenient way of updating yourself on key industry topics without having to make your way to a seminar room. We have three at ISE 2018: the AVIXA Commercial Solutions Theatre (sponsored by Crestron) in Hall 8, the CEDIA Smart Building Solutions Theatre (sponsored by KNX) in Hall 9 and the AVIXA Unified Communications Theatre (sponsored by Crestron) in Hall 11. Digital Signage Summit ISE, a joint venture with invidis consulting, returns to Amsterdam on Wednesday 7 February after its inaugural outing last year – although its parent event, which takes place during the summer, has been an industry favourite for many years. Our event this year will focus on the shift in the value chain in digital signage, and how different stakeholders need to re-evaluate their roles in the light of this. A long-running ISE favourite is the Smart Building Conference, which this year takes as its theme ‘From Smart Building to Smart City’. This one-day, dualtrack conference, held on the Monday, always offers a wide range of thought-provoking speakers – and as its theme changes every year, there’s always something new to learn there.

Eye-catching ISE has always had some really eye-catching stands, and our exhibitors expend a huge amount of effort in creating and building them. So last year I was delighted to be able to recognise and celebrate that work in our first Stand Design Awards. This will take place again during ISE 2018, organised once more by EXHIBITOR magazine; a panel of expert judges with no connection to our industry will cover the entire show floor and rate the stands against various criteria. The winning stands will be announced in a special ceremony on the Thursday afternoon. There’s the AudioForum on the Monday, the Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit on the Thursday, and more besides. You can read about all of these, plus other ISE 2018 attractions, in this publication. In fact, there’s plenty to keep you engaged at ISE 2018, both on and off the show floor, whichever days you attend. It adds up to a compelling argument for extending your time at the show this year. If you haven’t already registered for ISE 2018, remember that you can do that free of charge by using the invitation code on the front of this publication. I look forward to seeing you in Amsterdam in February. www.iseurope.org

WELCOME FROM AVIXA

WELCOME FROM

AVIXA makes its ISE debut InfoComm International is now AVIXA, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association – co-owner, with CEDIA, of Integrated Systems Europe. CEO David Labuskes, CTS, CAE, RCDD, sets the stage for a transformational year in commercial AV

from their relationship with the AV industry is different than what CTS-certified AV installers need. This year, we’re bringing our new TIDE conference to Amsterdam, the Monday before ISE begins. TIDE – Technology, Innovation, Design, Experience – was created to engage creative professionals and AV customers in thought leadership about design thinking, storytelling, and using AV experiences to achieve their goals. We’re fortunate that Daan Roosegaarde, an incredible designer and innovator, will join us for TIDE to explore the intersection of technology and human experience. It’s the type of insight that’s not only valuable to traditional AV professionals, but also to those creative professionals we’ll be collaborating with to deliver on the promise of audiovisual solutions.

How healthy is the AV industry these days? Are we in a position to deliver on all this promise?

‘It takes expertise and know-how to turn technology into experience’ It has been an exciting year for commercial AV and its leading trade association. How has becoming AVIXA reflected this excitement? InfoComm became AVIXA precisely because the industry has undergone rapid, positive change. When we were in Amsterdam a year ago, we heard from many participants about this change. We were well on our way to becoming a new association, but the message – that the industry needed to pivot from being so heavily focused on technology to focusing on solutions and experiences – was clear, and it affirmed our plans. Don’t get me wrong: Technology and innovation are crucial to our success, and they’re a main reason the halls of the RAI Amsterdam will be full this ISE. But customers today don’t simply buy technology; they buy an experience and an outcome. This is terrific news, and it’s what should make all of us so optimistic about the future of this industry. It takes expertise and know-how to turn technology into experience. That’s where the commercial AV industry creates the greatest value. It’s why companies will continue to invest more in AV solutions. It’s why we believe more creative professionals will have a role in building AV experiences. It’s why so many more of those customers are attending ISE and InfoComm tradeshows – you need to experience AV to fully appreciate its possibilities. Not long ago, some worried that commoditisation would overrun AV. But it’s hard to

6

I

commoditise an AV experience. AVIXA reflects all that is unique, enriching, innovative and, ultimately, valuable about AV’s role in people’s lives and businesses.

You mention customers and creative professionals – how will they find a place in this industry? Several ways. With respect to customers – end-users or enterprise decision-makers – we need to raise awareness of what I just described. We’re in the middle of a concerted effort to reach customers where they gather and explain how audiovisual experiences can deliver value to their organisations. We’ve been taking part in conferences in the retail, hospitality, financial services and higher education markets. In 2018, we will be engaging the sports and entertainment and transportation industries. Most recently, we took part in OEB 2017 in Berlin, a conference on technology-supported learning. As we engage these customer audiences, we build relationships and ultimately grow the market for AV solutions and services. And decision-makers understand better how AV can be a strategic asset. Creative professionals – designers, content producers and developers – are already important to the delivery of AV experiences. You can’t have an exceptional experience without the right combination of content, space, and technology. But clearly, what creative professionals need

The industry is already delivering, and it’s very healthy. There is a reason we hear so much news about mergers and acquisitions in the commercial AV market: when it’s your job to grow a business, or to evaluate investment opportunities and turn money into more money, you look for industries that show signs of sustained growth. Around this time last year, AVIXA was preparing its AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA), in conjunction with IHS Markit, and previewed it for the first time at ISE 2017. It’s a comprehensive look at the global market for pro-AV products and services, with analysis of key solution segments, like digital signage, conferencing and collaboration, and live events. There is also a component in our global summary evaluating the market in key verticals, such as healthcare, media and entertainment, and hospitality. On average, pro AV is growing faster than the overall economy worldwide: and that’s saying something, because for the first time in a while, economies around the world are growing at the same time. Here in Europe, we’re forecasting better than 4% annual growth through 2022, which is remarkable considering the challenging economic times Europe endured just a few years ago. We see a strong market for audio solutions, for example, and a very strong market for control solutions, particularly as Europe shows itself to be a leader in smart buildings development. The state of the industry is strong, but that’s no reason to be complacent. What you’ll see at ISE is the exact opposite of complacency: there are so many companies taking the technology underpinnings of AV experiences and using them in new, innovative ways to deliver the outcomes their customers need.

What are you looking forward to at ISE? For starters, I’m looking forward to the AVIXA stand. Not to give too much away, but we’re embracing our role as promoters of experience. Expect to see it reflected in our presence at ISE when friends and visitors come by the stand to learn more about our programmes and how we all can move this industry forward. I’m looking forward to our first TIDE conference at ISE and to the rich, rewarding professional development programme we’ve put together. We’ve got great partners in AV User Group, SCHOMS and EUNIS that will be collaborating with AVIXA on conferences for end-users and higher education delegates, plus a selection of session tracks organised around user experience, design, AV/IT, and emerging trends. Mostly, I’m looking forward to the excitement. Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like the jolt of energy from an AV industry tradeshow. Never take it for granted. Bring a new customer to ISE – someone who’s never witnessed it – and watch as it dawns on them how awesome audiovisual experiences can be. www.avixa.org

WELCOME FROM CEDIA

WELCOME FROM

A truly global organisation Tabatha O’Connor, acting president and CEO of CEDIA, provides an update on the worldwide state of the association

‘In total, 789 new members joined CEDIA in 2017 — which means CEDIA represents over 3,700 member companies in 78 countries’

E

vents such as ISE always have a wonderful flavour to them. When CEDIA professionals gather, it feels like more of a “family reunion” than a trade show. Old friends reconnect, and new friends are made, often by the dozen. It’s always a busy, enjoyable, and productive few days. 2017 has been equally busy, enjoyable, and productive for CEDIA. One of our proudest achievements – one that goes handin-hand with becoming a truly global association – was breaking ground on our new worldwide headquarters. In November 2017, we began work on a structure totalling 40,000sqft, located in the town of Fishers, Indiana – just outside of Indianapolis. CEDIA plans to occupy 30,000sqft, which will include staff office space, as well as a world-class training facility and an experience centre. We plan to occupy this space in November 2018. After CEDIA became globally aligned, the leadership at both the board and staff level decided that it was important to set a unified strategy for the entire organisation by working with Dr Rebecca Homkes, an executive advisor and consultant based at the London Business School, who works with top global companies on growth strategy and execution.

8

I

CEDIA is an organisation highly focused on its members and is doing a lot of things to support the membership. However, it’s important to make clear decisions about how to prioritise the work. What is exciting about the process is that the staff and board are working in parallel, which means the final strategy product will be one that everyone will have touched. One of the biggest parts of that strategy? Education. It became clear to us that CEDIA’s in-person and online industry training, standards, and certification offerings were benefits that needed expansion. We also plan to make it easier to engage with CEDIA through increased accessibility of our training tools. We are increasing regional training opportunities and improving the online experience as well as including state-of-the-art training, conference, and ‘userexperience’ facilities within our new HQ in Indiana. In EMEA, the CEDIA office doubled in size in 2017. The expansion included a classroom, workshop, and breakout area – all of which saw the space host close to 100 days of educational events in the year. This great new facility enables CEDIA to provide technology integrators with the latest education in an environment that is set to inspire and engage.

In all, 6,300 individuals were trained in-person in 2017. Online training saw similar growth, and 4,000 classes were taken last year. Those classes – which saw participation that represented 47 countries – covered both business and technical topics, including such offerings as the incredibly popular ‘New Hire Training Track’. Registration rose 15% from 2016 to 2017. New coursework, curricula and white papers are being developed constantly, and older materials are being refreshed. 2018 is set to see even more international training take place, beginning right here at ISE in February. Additionally, CEDIA Certification grew by 10% in 2017. Beyond the in-person training CEDIA has offered (both at its home bases and ‘on the road’) and the online courses, CEDIA professionals again proved their commitment to industry standards. Additionally, CEDIA introduced a new interactive badge programme that allows new digital marketing opportunities for those who are certified. A recertification initiative is currently underway to ensure that CEDIA professionals stay up to date with their status. Meanwhile, CEDIA continues to focus on improving existing benefits as well as developing attractive, additional assets for members. These include: • The Online CEDIA Community; a members-only site to share business and technical knowledge, documents, and network contacts. Members use the site constantly to ask and answer questions. The forum gives members a platform to freely discuss industry news, share ideas, and give expert advice to their peers, as well as access to a variety of downloadable resources. Since its launch, thousands of users worldwide have joined in a number of engaging conversations online. If you’re not involved, then I invite you to take advantage and take part in the discussion at www.cedia.net/community. • CEDIA Groups; small, non-competitive gatherings of integrators who meet monthly. Like-minded professionals from different markets gather regularly, online or on the phone, to share tips and advice and find common ground. • Awards programmes on three continents. CEDIA trophies were handed out in London, Australia, and San Diego in 2017 – and CEDIA’s new worldwide footprint was on display with 299 entries from no less than 19 countries. In the EMEA region, 430 industry professionals were part of the magic in 2017, enjoying an evening of networking, fine dining, and unforgettable celebration. To find out more about the 2018 awards programme, and what is needed to compete for the industry’s top awards, visit the CEDIA booth at ISE 2018. • Industry outreach that touched more than 2,000 new partners. The CEDIA Outreach Instructor programme now has 126 new Certified Outreach Instructors (COIs), and 320 partner classes were scheduled in 2017. Through CEDIA’s Designing Integrated Future-Ready Homes Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training course, more and more EMEA members are now equipped to communicate the benefits of professionally installed home technologies to the design and build audience. Available in English, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Spanish, this CPD welcomes more than 700 design professionals onto the course every year. • And, last but certainly not least, the credibility and influence of a global footprint. Seven hundred and eightynine new members joined CEDIA in 2017 — which means CEDIA represents over 3,700 member companies in 78 countries. In the EMEA region, over 200 new CEDIA members have joined in 2017, representing a 6% increase overall. Obviously, we’re thrilled about the direction CEDIA’s headed in, and we’re always happy to share more details or answer any questions you might have. So, please stop by the CEDIA booth at ISE – we’re looking forward to seeing you at the show! www.cedia.co.uk

SHOWEVENTS MONDAY 5 FEBRUARY

‘A day of unexpected perspectives’ Paddy Baker talks to AVIXA’s senior VP marcoms about the TIDE Conference, which looks to explore the creative side of AV AVIXA is bringing TIDE – which stands for Technology. Innovation. Design. Experience – to ISE 2018 following its highly successful debut at InfoComm 2017 in Orlando. The conference’s overall mission, according to Dan Goldstein, AVIXA senior VP marketing and communications, is to set the wide range of technology on display at the show in a user context. “The starting point at TIDE is the end-user outcome,” he explains. “We work back from that and weave the technology into the story.” In fact, storytelling was the subject of TIDE in Orlando; but for its second outing, the theme will be ‘Design thinking for business’. Goldstein explains that, from an academic perspective, design thinking is a process in product R&D; it will be covered at TIDE by Jan-Erik Baars from the University of Lucerne. However, the term will be given a wider meaning at TIDE: “It’s about how we take all of this technology – video content, projection mapping, immersive audio, augmented reality and more – and use it to create spaces and experiences that people will enjoy. So in addition to being at the technological leading edge, we’re thinking about design from an audience’s point of view – taking a people-centric approach.” This aspect of TIDE is one of the things that makes Kevin Jackson, marketer and editor-and-chief of Live Communication magazine, a highly appropriate choice as conference chairman, says Goldstein. “He brings a sales and marketing sensibility to the event. He absolutely falls into the category of people who don’t measure the success of an event by the sophistication of the technology deployed, but by whether it meets the objectives of the customer. We’re very happy to have him – he’s very influential in his community. He won’t just introduce the speakers, he’ll steer the conversation – and maybe challenge them a little.” Goldstein is also looking forward to the opening keynote presentation by Daan Roosegaarde, founder of Amsterdam-based Studio Roosegaarde, which develops projects that explore the relationship between people, technology and space. “He works across such a broad spectrum of disciplines,” says Goldstein. “He’s clearly influential in areas like green building, environment, design, technology and communications. He’s at the connection of environmental responsibility, corporate responsibility, design thinking and creativity; his keynote presentation is going to get us thinking in a different way. In fact, our hope is that it will be the start of a day of unexpected perspectives.” Goldstein is also keenly awaiting the presentation by lighting designer Sabine De Schutter: “I really like where she is as a creative thinker. She mainly works on the interior design and architecture side, but a lot of other things influence her work – such as art and culture. She’s also interested in technology, and adding value to a space through lighting design. At ISE, lighting is more commonly discussed in terms of how it can be controlled. Sabine will be bringing lighting into the value discussion, not just the technical discussion.” Looking at the speakers – who also include closing keynote speaker Monika Bielskyte, a creator of future-world prototypes for the entertainment industry, technology companies and cities – it’s clear that AVIXA has fulfilled its wish to bring a European flavour to this TIDE Conference. This flavour is cultural as well as geographical, Goldstein believes. “A design-led approach [to projects] is a little more common in Europe than in North America,” he points out. “And this is reflected in the audiences of the two shows. Compared with ISE, InfoComm has a higher proportion of attendees with an engineering background. A lot of the ISE base has a background in design, experiential marketing, architecture and interior design.” All of which suggests that TIDE should garner an even better reception at ISE than it did at InfoComm. The TIDE Conference takes place on Monday 5 February from 11:00 to 17:30 in the Hotel Okura, Amsterdam. Standard admission is €900 in advance; €750 for AVIXA members (Premium or Elite). www.tideconference.com

SHOWEVENTS MONDAY 5 FEBRUARY

Rob Lane reports on the Smart Building Conference 2018, and unpicks the subjects, speakers and themes that are set to get attendees excited Organised by Integrated Systems Events for ISE 2018, the Smart Building Conference (SBC) is aimed at professionals working in smart homes, smart offices, smart buildings and smart cities, and explores the latest technologies, business strategies, market research and workflow case studies – with presentations from the world’s leading smart building experts and

editor-in-chief, explains: “Audio networking is both an old and a new topic so we will discuss the history and development of technologies and techniques and how that has led to the present situation, as well as looking more closely at AVB, AES67 and AES70, and Dante. We are very happy to have a number of distinguished speakers, including representatives from Avnu Alliance and AES.” The 2018 conference will focus on three main themes: Digital Audio Transport; Audio Design with Audio over IP; and Digital Audio Protocols. The day will begin with Umberto Zanghieri, founder of ZP Engineering, discussing ‘Audio networking and digital transport - from the first steps to today’s protocols and techniques’. In this 30-minute session, Zanghieri will explain how and why the audio industry started to use digital networking, how the first protocols worked, and the benefits of modern protocols and audio over IP solutions. This will be followed by Ruud Kaltofen, DSP systems designer and president AES – Dutch Section, considering the reasons for using audio digital transport in live events. Kaltofen will use his decade of experience in the field to advise on choosing the right technologies and solutions. The final session of the morning will see Donato Masci, acoustic designer, Studio

thought leaders. Taking place on 5 February in the Forum and E102 at the Amsterdam RAI – the day before ISE opens its doors – this year’s one day event is themed ‘From Smart Building to Smart City’ and is expected to pull in more than 400 professionals. “Every year we tackle new subjects and feature different speakers because Smart Building

Sound Service, looking at the issue of ‘Audio design with audio over IP systems’. He will present a number of case studies highlighting different configurations of audio over IP systems, where the benefits are equally divided between users and customers, along with examples where it’s not yet possible to adopt this technology. The afternoon sessions will begin with Avnu Alliance Pro AV segment member Henning Kaltheuner looking at actual network solutions and their suitability for different AV market contexts, in ‘AV networking – one size fits all prospects?’, before Bosch Communications System USA’s Jeff Barryman delves into the AES67 and AES70 standards. The sessions end with a series of open table discussions with the speakers. As Benedettini explains, these 20-minute smaller group discussions are designed to encourage people to take part, ask questions and start discussions: “Each table will be dedicated to a topic or protocol, so people can have more in-depth discussions about the specific topic they are interested in. There will be a specialist moderator/speaker at each table who will get the discussions started by posing questions, after that it’ll be the turn of the audience!” The AudioForum starts at 10:00 on Monday 5 February in Rooms L103 and L104. Tickets cost €89. audioforum.connessioni.biz

is such a wide subject,” explains conference chairman Bob Snyder. “This year’s theme looks at how as more layers of digital networks are blanketing urban space, new approaches to commercial and residential built environment are emerging.” Topics up for discussion at SBC 2018 include: smart workplace technology; the transformation of the

architectural space into interfaces with the digital world; all about building automation systems; the battle for retrofit; the new smarter campus; and how hackers connect with smart buildings. As ever, SBC boasts a number of crowd-pulling speakers to deliver these topics – some of the world’s leading authorities across smart building’s broadchurch, omnidisciplinary fields of expertise. These include IT, AV, building, architecture and facilities management, among others. Guest speakers include Ger Baron, CTO of the City of Amsterdam; Phil Zito, known as ‘Mr Building Automation Systems’; Ron Bakker, founding partner of PLP Architecture; Coen van Oostrom, CEO of OVG Real Estate; and Daniel Schröder, responsible for Siemens Building Technology Division’s Smart Space Building Innovations. Formerly with Johnson Controls, Phil Zito is now America’s number one trainer for building automation systems. Author of Building Automation Systems A to Z, he has trained more than 1,300 building automation professionals and is the editor of Building Automation Systems. Zito will address ‘Demystifying IT in Smart Buildings’ for his presentation. Siemens’ Smart Space Building

Innovations aim to drive a new level of building productivity, and Daniel Schröder will discuss the impact of Alexa for business, the trend to outsourcing building management, and how to triple the value of buildings. As founding partner of PLP Architecture, Ron Bakker has led major architectural projects including The Edge for Deloitte in Amsterdam. Ron is likely to discuss his pet interest at SBC 2018: new technologies and their impact on productivity and well-being. OVG Real Estate founder and CEO Coen van Oostrom led the team of experts who innovated to deliver The Edge for Deloitte, working closely with the client to deliver what is the world’s most sustainable office building. He will be joined, among others, by the renowned Professor Carlo Ratti, Director of the Senseable City Lab at MIT for SBC’s closing panel: ‘From Smart Buildings to Even Smarter Buildings’. Professor Ratti will also deliver the show’s Opening Address – see below for more details. Smart Building Conference 2018 runs from 9:00 until 18:00 in the Forum and E102 at the Amsterdam RAI. Admission is €350 (€227.50 for AVIXA and CEDIA members) www.smartbuildingconference.com

The changing city The ISE 2018 Opening Address promises to be a thought-provoking discussion of how technology is changing the way that cities are planned, designed and managed

Carlo Ratti (Picture: Daniele Ratti

The Opening Address is a longstanding attraction at Integrated Systems Europe. This year it will be presented by Carlo Ratti, an architect, engineer, inventor and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At MIT, Prof Ratti directs the Senseable City Lab. With the slogan ‘Urban imagination and social innovation through design and science’, the lab researches how new technologies are changing the way we describe and understand cities. It uses an omnidisciplinary approach that speaks to designers,

planners, engineers, physicists, biologists and social scientists. By drawing on examples of projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, Prof Ratti’s Opening Address will discuss how the way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed by the increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics. This is driving a new approach to the study of the built environment, as well as the tools used to design them and mould their physical structure. The professor is also a founding partner of the international design and innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA), which is headquartered in Turin with branches in New York and London. Drawing on Ratti’s MIT work, CRA merges design and urban planning with cutting-edge digital technologies, so as to contribute to the creation of “an architecture that senses and responds”. CRA created the masterplan for a creative hub in the City of Guadalajara, the Future Food District at Expo Milano 2015, the renovation of the Agnelli Foundation HQ in Turin and the Digital Water

Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008; the last of these was named among the ‘Best Inventions of the Year’ by TIME magazine. Product design projects range from experimental furniture for Cassina to light installations for Artemide and responsive seating systems with Vitra. In each instance, the studio investigated the ways in which new technologies, including digital sensors and portable devices, are changing both the built environment and everyday life. Prof Ratti was also named one of the ‘50 most influential designers in America’ by Fast Company and highlighted in WIRED Magazine’s ‘Smart List: 50 people who will change the world.’ His speech will follow shortly after the conclusion of the Smart Building Conference, in which he will also take part – participating in the conference’s closing roundtable discussion. The Opening Address takes place on Monday 5 February at 18:00 in the Forum. It will be followed by the ISE Opening Reception in the Forum Lounge at 19:00. All attendees and exhibitors are invited to enjoy complimentary food and drinks.

SHOWEVENTS TUESDAY 6 FEBRUARY

New realities for 2018 New technologies could be about to transform the AV industry – and ISE 2018 provides an excellent opportunity to find out what and how. Ian McMurray finds out from Benjamin de Wit what visitors can expect to see and learn ISE 2018 sees the first ever XR Summit, which takes place on Tuesday 6 February. Chaired by Benjamin de Wit, founder and festival director of VR Days Europe, it’s an opportunity to hear from world experts on what’s going on in the XR market, illustrated by case studies from those who have successfully deployed it. And there’s more. The XR Technology exhibition area will run throughout the show to allow visitors to go into the subject in even more depth. For anyone who believes that XR is a vital technology for the future of audiovisual solutions – and increasing numbers of manufacturers, distributors, integrators and end users do – these, together with the XR Summit, promise to be unmissable. But what, exactly, is ‘XR’? There is a certain amount of confusion in the marketplace about what the ‘X’ in XR technology stands

for. Is XR Extended Reality – or is it Cross Reality? No matter. There is 100% agreement that XR technology includes VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality). The new terminology makes a lot of sense, because the lines between VR, AR and MR are, increasingly, blurring. Growing interest According to De Wit, the XR Summit and the XR Technology Zone are ISE’s response to the growing interest in XR from visitors and exhibitors. “For exhibitors, there’s a growing need to be able to showcase their products and services that utilise the latest XR solutions,” says De Wit. “For the increasing numbers of end-users who now attend ISE, they’re looking to XR to provide innovative solutions in, for example, areas as diverse as retail display and healthcare.” Location-based XR is on the rise, with museums, arcades

and cinemas integrating the technology, observes De Wit. This, he believes, requires a whole pro ecosystem – from hardware to software to maintenance, as well as content. “Furthermore,” De Wit continues, “as XR penetrates enterprises and becomes a vital element in production processes, management tools and coworking solutions, it will require the pro AV industry to step in. The big companies are leading the way, and we’re also seeing many start-ups taking leading roles.” Lucky “It’s crucial for all today’s players in the AV sector to stay on point and keep innovating,” he adds. “The market hasn’t yet grown as fast as some people predicted, so it could still be said to be young. That means that late comers are lucky: they can still get in – but they need to move now.” De Wit notes that ISE has traditionally been a significant

Benjamin de Wit: “As XR penetrates enterprises… it will require the pro AV industry to step in”

show for those in the digital signage industry – over 400 solution providers were at ISE 2017 – and, in many cases, he believes those manufacturers are looking to embrace XR technology and to feature VR, AR and MR within their commercial offerings as part of their value propositions. XR is far from only about digital signage, however. “The hot markets for XR are definitely training/education, healthcare and enterprise solutions,” De Wit continues. “That’s because, simply, XR has been demonstrated to offer real ROI in the enterprise and training markets. Companies like Audi, Deutsche Bahn and Walmart have

proven that investing in XR is very profitable. They’re not only investing in projects developed by third parties, but also in their own developers because they can clearly see that XR is here to stay.” Disagreement about what the X in XR stands for may persist. It seems likely, however, that after ISE 2018, there will be widespread consensus that XR looks set to become a key technology for the audiovisual industry. XR Summit takes place on 6 February from 10:00 to 17:30. Tickets cost €250 (€162.50 for AVIXA and CEDIA members). www.xr-summit.org

InAVation Awards returns for 12th year This long-established ISE event returns to the iconic Gashouder building The InAVation Awards is the culmination of a programme that sees a wide cross-section of the pro-AV industry compete in a number of hotly contested categories. The best project work, most innovative technology design and effective use of AV standards are celebrated, alongside outstanding distributors, project managers and consultants. Project awards highlight the most accomplished AV installations around the world across a range of sectors. Last year’s winners included the United Nations’ La Salle des Emirates, the Maersk Building at Copenhagen University and – the first winner of a new award for using AVIXA standards – Integrated Audio Visual (India).

12 I

In drawing up the shortlist for the 2018 Technology awards, the judging panel have considered the benefits that various technologies brings to designers, integrators, managers and users of AV systems, rather than dwelling on specification details. Categories include Collaboration and Conferencing, Digital Signage, as well as Small and Large Group Presentation. Each Technology category is voted for online, and promoted by the readers of various national and international media partners. Once again, the InAVation Awards will be held at Amsterdam’s Gashouder, an iconic converted industrial building, during ISE 2018. All costs for the evening are included in the ticket price. The event

begins with an informal drinks reception. Guests then take their seats under the Gashouder’s iron dome; the winners across all Technology and Project categories are announced during a fourcourse gala dinner. The party then continues after the meal with an open bar and the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy time with colleagues and industry peers. For further awards information or to book online visit www.inavationawards.com. By email: inavationawards@ imlgroup.co.uk or call Dan Jago on +44 1732 359990. The InAVation Awards powered by ISE takes place on the evening of Tuesday 6 February at the Gashouder Westergasfabriek BV, Haarlemmerweg 8E1014 BE, Amsterdam.

SHOWEVENTS WEDNESDAY 7 FEBRUARY

Unique signage insights

ISE 2018 sees the Digital Signage Summit convened again. Ian McMurray talks to Summit chairman Florian Rotberg about the value the conference will bring to delegates, and what’s going on in a rapidly expanding market The Digital Signage Summit has now been taking place for over a decade, with attendance growing year-on-year in line with the growth in the market. It’s no surprise, then, that 2017 saw the first Digital Signage Summit at ISE. The event was a success – which is why it returns at ISE 2018. Targeting senior executives throughout the entire digital signage value chain – including integrators, hardware suppliers, end-customers, network operators, software suppliers, agencies, content providers and media – the Summit is expected to attract an audience of over 150 people. “DSS will deliver exclusive market intelligence and insight to delegates, as well as providing unparalleled networking opportunities,” says Florian Rotberg, managing director of digital signage research company invidis consulting and a co-organiser of the event, along with ISE. “The half-day conference will largely focus on the evolutionary shift in the digital signage value chain. A key question that will be debated is: what are the future roles of systems integrators, software suppliers, display vendors and other ecosystem partners?”

IMPORTANT TRENDS This year’s event will feature the Digital Signage Awards for the first time. Also not to be missed will be tours of the show floor on Thursday and Friday, guided by Rotberg, which will visit selected digital signage exhibitors with a view to gaining a good overview of the digital signage market and the most important trends at ISE. According to Rotberg, 2018’s most significant developments are likely to include retailers increasingly expecting digital signage to be designed as part of an omnichannel ‘experience marketing’ strategy. “The customer journey is in focus,” he believes, “and digital touchpoints need to be seamlessly integrated with mobile, online and other digital media.” In terms of technology, Rotberg expects to see at ISE growing evidence of the rise in fine pitch LED screens,

14

I

which he thinks will increasingly replace LCD-based videowalls. OLED/QLED will, he says, also start to have an impact on professional display sales. “Not only have LED solutions advanced to even finer pitches, and front access for easier maintenance is becoming standard for premium LED,” he explains, “but more relevant is that LED is becoming a solution, not just a technology. Suppliers have built a growing partner network and, in contrast to the past, LED solutions are now increasingly available ex-European warehouses and not just ex-factory in China.”

MOST DYNAMIC For Rotberg, the guided tours are likely to make it clear that retail continues to be digital signage’s biggest and most dynamic market, with pressure from online retailing increasingly being felt by bricks and mortar outlets. “Stationary retail needs to offer experiences to distinguish itself from online,” he says, “and digital touch points play a key role in enabling stores to be more experiential and unique.” The corporate market is also becoming more important, according to Rotberg, as video conferencing moves from a few dedicated conference rooms to hundreds and thousands of so-called huddle spaces that reflect new, more informal, more collaborative ways of working. “All in one solutions like the Microsoft Surface Hub and similar solutions are opening up the market,” Rotberg notes. “Beyond this, digital signage – both display-based and LED – is becoming standard in corporate lobbies and public spaces.” The third digital signage market that Rotberg sees as being particularly vibrant is ESL – electronic shelf labels. With the growing implementation of dynamic pricing online – enabling web-based retailers to instantly change their prices in response to changes in the sales environment – bricks and mortar retailers are looking to be able to do the same.

COMPETING WITH ONLINE “We’re seeing real growth in ESL, particularly in consumer electronics and food,” Rotberg observes. “Amazon changes the prices of certain products up to 100 times a week, and consumer electronics retailers especially have already looked, or will begin to look, at electronic shelf labels to enable them to compete with online.” Something else that Rotberg believes may start to become visible on the show floor at ISE 2018 is evidence of the consolidation – which he describes as “long awaited” – phenomenon he has seen over the past year or two. He cites Stratacache’s acquisition of industry heavyweight Scala in 2016 as having begun an “avalanche” of M&A activity. Since then, Scandinavian industry players MultiQ and Zeta Display have acquired various players in the Nordics and beyond, while in Germany, family-owned Gundlach is driving consolidation. Acer – historically considered more of an IT company – is gaining market access by acquiring digital signage integrators and DOOH network operators. The company further strengthened its position in November by becoming the largest corporate shareholder in AOPEN, whose products include a range of digital signage players. “Consolidation has been long overdue,” says Rotberg, “as most players are just too small to manage the global digital signage projects that increasing numbers of organisations are looking to deploy.” For anyone who is involved in any aspect of digital signage, ISE 2018, and especially the Digital Signage Summit, with its roster of panellists drawn from leading digital signage and DOOH experts, promises to be unmissable. The Digital Signage Summit ISE takes place on Wednesday 7 February from 09:30 to 14:00 in room E102. Tickets are €200, or €130 for AVIXA and CEDIA members. www.digitalsignagesummit.org

SHOWEVENTS THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY

The competing artworks will all be projected onto the irregular façade of the EYE Filmmuseum

Projecting a good impression The World Masters of Projection Mapping competition looks to be a spectacular part of ISE 2018. Paddy Baker finds out about the technology and the integration work involved in bringing it to life Integrated Systems Europe’s relationship with the city of Amsterdam goes back to 2005, but for most of that time its activities have been focused on the RAI. This year sees ISE involved in a highprofile event in the centre of the city: the World Masters of Projection Mapping competition – organised jointly by ISE, Amsterdam Light Festival and RAI Amsterdam. (See our front cover story for more information about the competition.) A number of technical partners have provided equipment or expertise to the competition. Panasonic has supplied 12 projectors: PT-RZ31 and PT-RZ21 models – WUXGA 3-chip DLP laser projectors with 30,000 and 20,000 lumens brightness respectively. These will beam content from a disguise (formerly d3 Technologies) 4x4 Pro media server, with the signals sent over Lightware HDBaseT equipment. There will also be a large infrastructure of power supplies and cabling supplied by local integrator Beam Systems, which is responsible for the competition’s AV installation. Audio, which will accompany the competition entries on 8 and 9 February, will play out over Alcons Audio speakers. “We have to consider that there are a lot of people living in the local environment, so there won’t be any 105dB techno,” smiles Beam Systems’ sales manager, Jason Malone. Beam Systems has been involved in projection mapping projects for a dozen years, according to Malone. There are two aspects that make this project different from most, he says: “Usually when you project on a building, it’s a relatively flat surface, although it might have

16

I

some shapes and angles. But the shape of the EYE Filmmuseum is kind of faceted – there are no straight surfaces on it, everything is tilted or tipped, and triangular. And it’s next to the water – the water’s edge is only about 30m away, which makes it really challenging. Usually you have plenty of distance from a building, but in this case the projectors need to be extremely close, which has made the system design more challenging. Instead of having an array of beamers from one central point, here we’re having to position them all around the building.” Not having the projectors grouped together also has implications for protecting them from the weather. Not only is the event taking place during the winter, but the location has some particular challenges of its own. “I think it’s probably the windiest part of the city,” says Malone. “Also, I always joke about the horizontal rain in Amsterdam – that can be an issue when you’re installing, but once everything’s installed, you’re fine. “We have rebuilt some sea freight containers to include airconditioning, a desk, space for the media server and a desk. You can move around in them, and they have windows that you can close to protect against theft or damage. It’s a little office.” The projectors are also housed within converted shipping containers, and were placed inside them before the containers were craned into position. Initial physical preparation – bringing containers and generators to the site – took place between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. A ten-day installation of the projectors and other infrastructure began on

2 January, to be ready for the first show on 14 January. “The first five days were for placing projectors and rough alignment; the second five days were for fine alignment and mapping,” says Rembrandt Boswijk of Indyvideo, technical project manager for WMPM. (Indyvideo provides AV consultancy and project management services to Amsterdam Light Festival.) As well as projection onto the museum façade, part of each artwork will be projected onto a water screen – and this will be the final part of the installation. The pontoons used for the screen will be put in place on 2 February using a 100-tonne crane, with screen installation and testing taking place over the following two days. Beam Systems has installed cameras so that the whole mapping surface can be seen from the frontof-house position. However, this is only good for a general overview – it doesn’t give sufficiently accurate colour information for calibration purposes. So – even though the projectors can be calibrated

wirelessly – calibration and image alignment were performed by walking around the building and observing the projector outputs directly. Beam Labs, the creative division of Beam Systems, has worked with the artists on the technical implementation of their content into the 3D mapping system. “We are helping them with our knowledge and our artistic ideas to get as close to their ideas as we can, because the shape of the building is so complicated,” says Malone. Boswijk adds: “An artist needs input from the building before they can create their content, so we looked for 3D drawings of the building – but the existing drawings were not accurate enough. So we’ve scanned the whole building in 3D – which was a pretty interesting process. It generates a point cloud of all the scanning points which is translated into a 3D drawing; this is used for the UV map, which is a type of 3D drawing used specially for video mapping.” Malone explains: “Because of

the timeline, we need to have the artists provide content that can be immediately imported into the media server. This will avoid us having to re-map everything when there is a new artist involved; the mapping will all have been done before the artists enter their content.” Beam Systems will run the show from its office on a fully automated basis, so the need for human interaction will be minimal: “The show will be automated and scheduled; we will take care of booting up the projectors, shutting them down at night, booting the media server up and down – and we’ll have remote control from the office if we need to log in. We are available 24/7, and our office is only five minutes away.” All shortlisted entries will be shown on the evening of Thursday 8 February. A choice of hospitality cruise packages for the evening, sailing from the RAI, is available from event partner Artifex – these can be booked via the ISE website. www.iseurope.org

Future AV Professionals The future of any industry lies largely in its ability to recruit the best people – and ISE is doing its bit. As in previous years, ISE will be running its well-established Future AV Professionals Programme, sponsored by manufacturer and distributor Adam Hall. ISE’s aim is to connect the industry’s future professionals with the industry and to use its unique position to help create a foundation for their careers. The Future AV Professionals

Programme is an initiative designed to introduce students studying audiovisual technology and related subjects to the industry at large, providing them with a deeper understanding of what it is and how it works. It also introduces those students to exhibitors – and vice versa – via a careers fair. To create a fun element, the students – who have been invited to attend by their educational institutions – will also be given a list of things to see and

do to maximise the benefit they will gain from being on the show floor, checking off each item as it is completed. The programme is being held on Thursday 8 February, allowing participants the following day to browse the show at leisure. The more formal part of the day will see leading industry associations AVIXA and CEDIA sharing their perspectives. A presentation by Adam Hall will then provide an overview of the industry.

SHOWEVENTS THURSDAY 8 FEBRUARY

Summit sports a new format SVG Europe has partnered with PanStadia & Arena Management for new-look venue summit at ISE 2018

For the past four years sports broadcast association SVG Europe has staged the Sports Venue Technology Summit at ISE in order to provide delegates with an opportunity to find out more about the rapidly evolving design and applications of the modern sports stadium. But for 2018 the association is ringing the changes and partnering with leading venue publication PanStadia & Arena Management magazine to create a brand new event, Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit. This new-look event expands the focus to consider other areas related to the overall experience of the modern stadium – in particular those technologies geared towards enhancing fan engagement, including mobile and OTT services. Incorporating multiple networking opportunities, Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit will feature panels and presentations involving leading broadcasters, service providers, vendors, architects, designers and consultants. Confirmed speakers span the full spectrum of pro-AV, broadcast and venue operations, and include: Peter Ayres, director Buildings + Places, AECOM; Mike Bondhiek,

managing director, PTI Consulting; Paul Brislin, director and architect, Arup; Roland Hemming, RH Consulting, founder/consultant; Andreas Hildebrand, senior product manager and evangelist, ALC NetworX; Ryan Jespersen, regional manager, EMEA, Wowza Media Systems; James Middling, global head of sports and events, Mott MacDonald; Hassan Peymani, director/co-founder, Volcano City; John Smith, managing director, Media Links EMEA; and Will Waters, senior director IP workflow strategy, NewTek. With a number of new landmark stadiums and arenas due to open over the next few years, the event promises to capture an important moment in time as the needs and expectations of the modern sports venue continue to evolve – particularly with regard to network infrastructures and display technologies. John Sheehan, editor of PanStadia & Arena Management, comments: “Sports stadia are going to be revolutionised over the next 20 years as fans continue to demand an improved experience and venue owners and operators look to maximise revenues. Venues need to continue to engage more diverse user groups and to do this they will

increasingly rely on technology. A closer relationship is also evolving between the fans in the stadium and what is happening on the pitch, with more content likely to come from players. To help with this, stadium architects are not just working with structural engineers anymore but now rely increasingly on data modelling experts for ideas and support in stadium design.” David Davies, editor of SVG Europe, comments: “From the deployment of display technology and high-end audio, to hugely increased quantities of content accessible on mobile devices, the visitor experience of the modern sports stadium is in the midst of a paradigm shift. We are delighted to be partnering with the team at PanStadia & Arena Management magazine to explore some of the key technologies underpinning these changes, and to consider how venues, broadcasters, clubs and federations can all make the most of the emerging opportunities.” The Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit will take place in Room E102 from 9.30 to 16.00 on 8 February. It is free to attend. www.svgeurope.org/sports-venuefan-engagement-2018/programme

Rewarding ISE’s best stand designs Following a very successful inaugural event last year, the Stand Design Awards are returning to ISE 2018 in an expanded format. The Stand Design Awards were created to recognise and reward the very high level to which exhibitor stands at ISE are designed and built. All stands are automatically entered into the competition, and the entire show floor is visited by stand design experts who have no specific connection to this industry. As last year, the awards are being managed by EXHIBITOR magazine, an award-winning print and online media brand that covers best practices for trade show marketing. Travis Stanton, editor of EXHIBITOR, along with senior writer and awards programme manager Linda Armstrong, will be on site for the duration of the show and will complete the initial round of judging to select the finalists.

An expert panel will then choose the winners, based on eight different assessment criteria points, which include strength of communications, integration of technology, impact, and effective use of space. The judges are: • Alp Gumus, managing partner, Burkhardt Leitner Modular Spaces GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany • Andrew Sexton, creative director and agency partner, 2LK Design Ltd, Farnham, United Kingdom • Arhan Kayar, co-founder, chief creative and design director, Dream Design Factory, Istanbul • Dick de Jong, manager of presentations and collections, NEMO Science Museum, Amsterdam • Simon Phillipson, art director/ designer, Conspiracysinc, Amsterdam Entries will once again be split into size brackets, the number of which has been increased this year.

The four categories for ISE 2018 are Small (49sqm and less), Medium (50199sqm), Large (200-399sqm), and XL (400sqm and more). The winning stands will be announced in a special awards ceremony taking place at 16:00 on Thursday 8 February in the AVIXA Commercial Solutions Theatre (sponsored by Crestron) in Hall 8.

The finalists will be on stage at the ceremony, and will present their entries to the audience. They will talk about the inspiration behind their artworks and the production techniques they have used. The overall winner will be announced at the awards event. The judging, led by Amsterdam

Light Festival creative director Lennart Booij, will have taken place the previous evening, when all entries will have been on display. WMPM presents a unique challenge – creating video art that is not only mapped onto the futuristic exterior of the EYE Filmmuseum, but can also be seen from multiple viewpoints.

In addition to the boat trips on the IJ organised on the judging evening, the projections can also be seen from the quay at Central Station and the nearby Amsterdam Tower. The World Masters of Projection Mapping awards ceremony will take place in the Forum at 12:30 on Friday 9 February.

Mixed Reality: solving real problems in the XR Technology Zone In the XR Technology Zone at ISE 2018, Holovis will be showcasing an array of emerging technology solutions and demonstrating how they can be implemented to solve challenges in a range of organisational environments

Key themes presented by Holovis in the XR Technology Zone will be applications for entertainment and enterprise including training and simulation, architectural design, collaboration, retail and brand engagement and virtual manufacturing as the world moves towards Industry 4.0. The zone will showcase three interconnected Virtual Reality (VR) experiences to demonstrate how concepts and complex data sets can be visualised as immersive and interactive models, incorporating real world, realtime data and simultaneous multi-person engagement. A VR architectural design experience will let visitors swipe through a timeline and see the building constructed around them. The demonstration is designed to show a completely new way to engage with construction designs, how the process for master contractors can be speeded up and how the way the industry currently views project plans can be advanced. Visitors can then walk inside the building that they’ve just seen being built and discover it is a factory with a robot production line. This will showcase a live digital twin recreating the exact movements from a real robot at Holovis HQ in the UK, seen externally to the headset by a live feed. By modelling real-time data in the virtual space, operators can be instantly alerted to alignment issues, preventing inaccuracies being discovered later down the line. In this new scalable world, data relating to processes that might not be next to each other in reality can be incorporated to show them working side by side. It can also be a collaborative working environment with multiple people in different geographical locations all meeting in the same virtual space to review the data, interact with it and make instant changes or updates.

20

The third station will be a collaborative VR activity, where people in two different views will be able to build a model Lego car together. Dave Elliott, enterprise business development manager at Holovis, said: “We are looking forward to showcasing some of our latest developments, which will also include another Near Miss Simulator, and multiple uses for Augmented Reality outside of just entertainment and gamification. These emerging technologies are now creating solutions for industry: the applications really do solve business challenges in a way that makes the technology invisible.” www.iseurope.org/technology-zones

Distributors are, in many ways, the unsung heroes of the audiovisual business. Everyone sees the manufacturers’ products, and everyone benefits from the integrators’ solutions – but who gives a passing thought to what, in many cases, comes between the two? Without distributors, manufacturers would struggle to get their products to market – and integrators and installers would struggle to get the service and support they need. Recognising the invaluable role played by distributors led to ISE launching M2D (Manufacturer to Distributor), which is a free service for both. It makes its fifth appearance at ISE 2018, having proved increasingly popular over the years of its existence. Think of it as a dating app for the AV world, in which distributors can

Drone Arena returns to ISE The pro AV industry’s largest drone exhibition is set to return to ISE, with Stampede bringing a larger and even more wide ranging Drone Arena

Distributor Stampede has long been a proponent of the potential that drones bring to AV integrators – and the Drone Arena, on stand 14A100, features at ISE for the third time this year. According to Stampede president and COO Kevin Kelly, the 2018 Drone Arena will feature more models from more manufacturers and demonstrate applications across a broader range of vertical markets. His company will again team up with the Unmanned Vehicle University to provide a full schedule of application-specific presentations and training sessions, as well as small group and one-on-one information sessions. The separate Unmanned Vehicle University classes will cover in-depth discussions of various commercial applications and how drones are being used currently – such as public safety, infrastructure inspection, surveying/mapping and aerial cinematography. Also returning is the Stampede Fly Cage, which has previously drawn large crowds. Throughout each day, the Stampede Fly Cage will host short presentations by specific drone-related manufacturers who will discuss in more detail how their specific models can be used to support commercial applications. “The Stampede Drone Arena is an event unto itself under the umbrella of ISE,” says Kelly. “It offers a complete programme of product and information that is useful for both integrators and end user customers. Our goal is to empower integrators to leave the 2018 Drone Arena ready to add drones to their 2018 business strategy.” Visitors to the Stampede Drone Arena will also have a chance to win a drone, with one drone being given away each day of the show. Show attendees can put their business card into the raffle drum, and need not be present to win.

M2D at ISE: creating business growth Once again, ISE’S M2D programme will be helping manufacturers to find new business by expanding their distribution base

swipe right on potential manufacturer partners – who can connect with a view to forging long-term business relationships. How does it work? Throughout the ISE halls, kiosks are located in which special screens are installed. These screens show all the territories for which manufacturers are looking for distribution. For distributors, it’s as simple as scrolling through the list to find companies they may be able to represent. To make it even easier, the list can be downloaded to a mobile device for subsequent review. After that, it’s as straightforward as the distributor making contact with the manufacturer. It’s a classic win-win. Not only do distributors have the opportunity to enhance their business, but manufacturers get to expand the

availability of their product range. All that manufacturers have to do to participate is head for the ISE Exhibitor Back Office, and click on the ‘Interact with visitors’ button. Distributors? They just need to be at the show.

Tech Tours provide insight into unique AV projects Tech Tours have for several years been popular with ISE attendees, typically ‘selling out’ (they are free to attend) well before the show opens. They provide an opportunity to see AV technology in action in some unique projects, and to understand why and how the technology was chosen and deployed in order to meet client objectives. The first tour this year, which takes place from 13:00-18:00 on Monday 5 February, will explore The Canon of the Netherlands at the Open Air Museum in Arnhem. The partially underground exhibition, which opened in September 2017, examines the highs and lows of Dutch history since the Stone Age, combining historical objects on loan from over 12 museum collections. The installation features the imaginative implementation of a broad range of the latest audiovisual, IT network and display technologies. The client and technical systems designer Rapenburg Plaza will join forces with ISE to lead the tour. On Tuesday 6 February, from 18:00-20:00, the Tech Tour visits This Is Holland. Participants will ‘fly’ over the Netherlands’ must-see locations, getting a spectacular perspective of the country from the air, courtesy of the latest motion and projection technologies. The experience features an interactive and educational pre-show area. The designer – Leisure Expert Group – will team up with the client to present the tour. Joost van Berkel, commercial director at This Is Holland, says: “During the Tech Tour to This Is Holland, VIPs will feel, see, learn and experience the Netherlands in a unique way – and in just one hour.”

Special Interest Groups tailor ISE experiences

Show Floor Tours offer market insights ISE visitors with a specific interest in digital signage or smart buildings will likely want to take advantage of this year’s Show Floor Tours. Both last two hours. The digital signage tour will be led by Florian Rotberg, who is managing director of invidis consulting and chairman of the Digital Signage Summit. The tour will take in the latest professional display products, and provide insights into developments in LED technology. It will also explore the most recent innovations in digital signage. “The digital signage tour is the perfect way of exploring the digital signage highlights at ISE 2018,” says Rotberg. Digital signage tours start from the invidis lounge near Entrance F on Thursday 8 February at 14:00

and Friday 9 February at 14:00. Bob Snyder is editor-in-chief at Channel Media Europe and chairman of the Smart Building Conference. He’ll be leading a tour designed to encompass the latest technology for smart buildings and smart homes, as well as giving participants insights into the smart workplace. Smart building innovations such as IoT will also be included. “Our tour of innovations and trends in smart building, homes and offices will suit both experts and newcomers,” says Snyder. Smart building tours start from the Smart Building Solutions Theatre (Hall 9-F100) on Tuesday 6 February at 16:00 and Friday 9 February at 10:00.

As ISE has grown over the years, the number of technologies, products and solutions represented has, inevitably, multiplied. That can make it more challenging to see and hear from the exhibitors most relevant to a visitor’s specific interests. ISE has addressed this with the creation of Special Interest Groups that make it easier for visiting executives to have a show experience precisely tailored to their needs. For ISE partners, these unique programmes enable them to enhance their status as organisations able to link senior executives with appropriate vendors. Exhibitors benefit too, as these programmes enable them to meet key prospective customers. ISE this year features seven Special Interest Groups. • The AV User Group is a worldwide community of 650 AV end user professionals. • IML Group’s PFM (Premises and Facilities Management) magazine has been reporting on the sector for over 20 years. • Italy’s SIEC (Systems Integration Experience Community) encourages dialogue among industry members. • SCHOMS members are senior managers working within UK higher education who give strategic direction on technology. • C3 is the flagship forum from media company People and Computers and the only official forum for the ICT sector. • AV-Solution Partner is a 14-member AV media technology network with companies located throughout the DACH region. • Event Partner is owned by German media company Musik Media Verlag, which specialises in B2B technology.

DISPLAYS AND SIGNAGE Even the casual observer at ISE can’t fail to notice the plethora of display technology on show – whether it’s videowalls, projectors, digital signage displays, touchtables or kiosks. With applications in just about every vertical you can think of, it’s no surprise that display technology is such a mainstay of the show. And each year seems to bring bigger, brighter, thinner, more responsive displays. Here are some of the display innovations that will be on the ISE 2018 show floor

Videowall visions for the future LANG

Stand: 1-H50 A new high-resolution LED product with a pixel pitch of less than 2mm will be used to create a 100sqm videowall on the Lang stand during this year’s ISE, the company has revealed. Full details of the new high resolution LED system remain under wraps until the show itself, but according to Lang, the new product is the result of research into current market trends, as well as the testing of new technology from leading manufacturers. First discovered during a collaborative technology shootout with customers, Lang specialists have since modified the LED

cabinets in close cooperation with the manufacturer and adapted them to meet the company’s own standards and requirements. Having completed a series of largely mechanical improvements, the new product will be launched bearing the Lang Edition seal, denoting its status as a Lang-optimised LED product. Lang has invested in 600sqm of the product, with the 100sqm wall at ISE 2018 marking its international debut. Further highlights on the LANG stand will include: new projector innovations, an example application of an immersive room, an area focusing on AV over IP (aimed at more technically minded visitors), plus celebrations to mark the company’s 40th anniversary.

ALLSEE TECHNOLOGIES Stand: 8-G120

Looking to expand its network of global partners for a second year at ISE is Queen’s Award for Enterprise [Innovation] winner, Allsee Technologies. Allsee says that unlike other manufacturers that offer digital signage products, it is an OEM/ ODM, exclusively focused on this market with understanding of the requirements of its customer base.

Allsee is exhibiting core ranges including USB plug and play displays, all-in-one network displays, freestanding digital posters, digital menu boards, and ultra-high brightness monitors. Also on show are PCAP and IR touchscreens, 10in POS touchscreens, videowall displays and interactive touch displays. Allsee is also showcasing some unlaunched and bespoke products, such as ultra-wide stretched displays, hanging rod screens and advertising touchscreens.

Allsee says it has been working closely with its partners for over 10 years, providing turnkey solutions for customers and offering bespoke products and solutions. The company designs its own software in conjunction with the hardware that it manufactures, providing complete all-in-one solutions for promotion, integration, maintenance and use. It also provides unbranded marketing materials, as well as a three-year warranty and UK based lifetime technical support.

Mountainous table provides a heavyweight message TOTEM OF DESIGN Stand: 15-H265 In the world of interactive kiosks and tables, standing out is key. So Totem of Design has set itself the goal of offering something completely different. The Italian company uses unconventional materials to create interactive tables that can offer both a tactile and a visual experience. ISE attendees are thus being presented with a smart media table called Mont Blanc – ‘a mountain’ merged with a digital screen. According to the company, “streaks of the millenary rock come to life thanks to the power of technology, combining past and future into a weave of forms and emotions”.

26

I

Mont Blanc is ‘easily demountable’ to facilitate transport and shipping, is scalable in various formats, and can be integrated with Totem of Design’s main brands. Further finishes are available in terms of colours or material effects such as ‘luminescence’ or cement. In a market such as digital signage, where screens keep on spreading, it says it is important to make the digital message unique and unequivocal in order to stand out from competitors and capture customers’ attention. A Totem of Design spokesperson said: “We firmly

believe that design is a form of immediate communication which is easily recognisable, because we are surrounded by a world that has taught us to unconsciously intercept these types of signals.”

The Mont Blanc interactive system combines a ‘mountain’ with a digital screen

NPP control room display goes large The NPP direct view LED display, designed specifically for command and control applications, takes centre stage

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC Stand: 2-A20, 2-B20 A fleet of new and updated control room display products is being showcased at ISE 2018 by Mitsubishi Electric. The centrepiece of the company’s presence is a full-size control room simulation featuring the newly released NPP direct view LED screen. At over 11m in width, the NPP control room display at ISE 2018 is the largest yet shown in public, claims the company, providing an ‘impressive’ demonstration of the capabilities of the newest technologies to be

added to Mitsubishi’s portfolio of professional control room displays. The company claims its VS15NP160 (15-NP) is the first direct view LED display to be designed specifically for the command and control market. Over three years in development, the 15-NP incorporates many of the proprietary technologies found in Mitsubishi Electric’s DLP videowall range, plus several new patented features intended to optimise performance and longevity in control room applications. Complementing the NPP display are several examples of Mitsubishi’s core DLP control room videowalls, including its 60HS12 Slimcube, and the latest version of

the 72in 72WE120 DLP cube. Another major launch for ISE 2018 is a new suite of visualisation and management software. Designed for native IP networkbased command and control display architectures, the S-SF software suite enables networkbased display systems to operate more efficiently and with greater scalability, claims Mitsubishi. The LCD product range has been extended with the addition of new high-brightness versions of the 55in LCD control room display, the LM55P2. On show at ISE, the company claims the LM55P2 is ideal for compact control room applications such as CCTV monitoring or crisis suites.

DOOH campaign shoots for global goals QUIVIDI Stand: 8-C319 In 2015 the United Nations launched The Global Goals for Sustainable Development, a series of ambitious targets to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and fix climate change by 2030. Through Project Everyone, a coalition of charities and businesses came together to drive awareness for the goals in digital out-of-home (DOOH), using an innovation from Quividi called Campaign Genius, which for the first time allowed for real-time evolutionary campaigns in DOOH on a large scale. Shopping centre owner and manager Westfield donated screen time to the campaign and ran the spots last September in three of its malls. The ad was a ten-second

video composed of four clips of twoand-a-half seconds each. The first three clips featured ‘Goalkeepers’ selected and sequenced by Campaign Genius; the last was a branded call-to-action outro. To the audience, this looked like a regular DOOH campaign. However, the local attention dynamics as measured by Quividi were being fed to the genetic algorithm. This recombined the sequences that fetched the most attention, allowing for the most optimised sequences of Goalkeepers messaging for each individual screen, its environment and its audience.

Holographic showstopper PANASONIC Stand: 1-H20 From live fashion catwalks to projection mapped sports cars, 4K robotic screens and magic shows featuring moving projection, Panasonic’s ‘showstopper’ performances have become a ‘must-see’ part of ISE over recent years. ISE 2018 will once again see Panasonic return with a new show that will combine visual arts performers, laser projection technology, 3D mapping and

tracking. In combination, the show-stoppers will leave the audience wondering where the live performers start and the projections finish, the company says. With a show design by the Painting with Light team, Panasonic has joined forces with NovaLine, which will be providing ‘invisible’ projection screen fabrics. When combined with laser light from Panasonic’s 3-chip DLP laser projectors, the result is said to create a very bright and realistic looking image.

Thomas Vertommen, European product marketing manager at Panasonic, said: “There is a magic surrounding projection mapping, which is hard to achieve with other visual techniques. Laser projection technology has the ability to engage people and bring objects to life with compelling, storytelling experiences.” Panasonic will once again partner with Blacktrax and disguise (formerly d3 Technologies), which will provide the tracking solution and server technology behind the live show.

Panasonic’s 3-chip DLP laser projectors - the 30,000lm PT-RZ31K (pictured) and 20,000lm PT-RZ21K – will be used to create realistic holographic images during the showstopper performances

AUDIO AND LIVE EVENTS One of the largest halls at ISE 2018 is Hall 7. Previously devoted to audio, its scope has been expanded this year to include technology for live events as well. In fact, audio is such a big part of ISE that you’ll find it in a number of the other halls. Here’s a selection of exhibitors from the audio and live events world

Modular 2-way column loudspeaker debuts ALCONS AUDIO Stand: 6-H150 Making its ISE debut is the QR24/110 modular 2-way column loudspeaker from Alcons Audio. It is designed to be used as a scalable vertical array system, for both permanent and (limited) portable applications. The speaker combines a 1:1 linear and dynamic sound reproduction with what the company says is superb intelligibility and throw, in even the acoustically most challenging environments. The symmetrical acoustic design, in combination with the wide, patented 110° horizontal dispersion of the RBN high frequency drivers (up to 20kHz), is claimed to offer a coherent horizontal pattern control with seamless coverage. This widens the stereo sweet spot significantly, according to Alcons, for an off-axis positioned audience. By using only two 12in RBN pro-ribbon transducers for the mid-high frequencies, the system’s 90% active frontal radiation results in what is claimed to be a sharply controlled vertical dispersion. This, says Alcons, offers a unique, SPL-independent intelligibilityover-distance, without the necessity of DSP-based beamshaping. Alcons also highlights the flat frequency response and the fast transient response of the RBN mid-high frequency transducers.

30

I

The company says this, in combination with the sharply controlled dispersion, allows maximum gain before feedback (GBF) up to directly in front of or under the system.

Limelight for a digital age CHAUVET PROFESSIONAL Stand: 7-R250 One of the latest additions to the Chauvet Professional Ovation lighting range is the Ovation F-915VW. This is a high power, variable white, Fresnel-style fixture that uses a six-colour mixing system to render an array of colours. Chauvet says the fixture projects a consistently smooth output with a high television lighting consistency index (TLCI), colour rendering index (CRI) and colour quality scale (CQS) values at all colour temperatures. This holds true across a wide range of correlated colour temperatures (CCT), namely 2,800° to 8,000°K, with markers at every 100°K.

Each colour temperature can be further adjusted for +/- green and a motorised zoom, while a 30°-85° field angle allows light to be added where it is needed. The combination of its bright, soft field of light in nearly any temperature of white with high CRI and CQS and its virtually silent operation makes the product ideal for studio, film and theatre applications, claims Chauvet. In addition, the fixture includes remote device management, adjustable pulse width modulation and 16-bit dimming. The colour temperature and hue, along with zoom and output, can be controlled via DMX or on-board dials.

Noisy environments can be a nightmare for people with hearing impairments. Those with healthy hearing can overcome difficult acoustic situations without the need for supportive technology. However, users of hearing aids or people with cochlear implants often have trouble understanding the spoken word when there’s even a small amount of acoustic interference. As a result, operators and suppliers of public address systems for events, transport applications and cultural

centres know that they reach only about 90% of their audience. According to hearing technology specialist Humantechnik, integrating induction loop technology into audio systems will enable them to reach the remaining 10%: people with impaired hearing. The special amplifiers, which provide inductive audio signals through a wire loop laid out in the room, are compatible with all types of PA system. Users of hearing aids and cochlear implants can switch their devices to direct inductive reception and thus completely avoid acoustic interference. Humantechnik is presenting its Audioropa portfolio of

solutions for high quality inductive transmission of audio in Hall 7 at ISE 2018, promising a highly compact digital loop amplifier that provides audio power in a small format. Humantechnik Audioropa’s highly compact digital loop amplifier promises powerful audio in a small format

No subwoofer required NEETS Stand: 1-F130 Featuring a built-in amplifier and two sets of 4in woofers and 1in tweeters, the recently announced Neets Sound Bar – SB1 does not require an external subwoofer. Designed to enhance the meeting and conference room audio experience, the SB1 can be connected directly to a display or sound source. It works out-of-thebox via the wake-on-signal, or it can be seamlessly connected to a control system through the RS-232 port. The tiny speakers typically built-in to a display usually cannot provide the clear audio required for productive meetings, Neets believes. Michael Rumph, product manager at Neets, said: “We wanted

to address that problem and make it easy for users to upgrade the sound experience. That’s why we developed the Neets Sound Bar. However, sound alone doesn’t cut it. At Neets, we recognise that AV equipment must also complement the design of contemporary meeting and conference spaces. [We do this ] by developing a sound bar that combines an aesthetically pleasing design with high-quality audio and that works out of the box. “Additionally, when combined with a control system, presenters can experience an even better sound performance by choosing between ‘Presentation’, ‘Unified Communication’ and ‘Music’ modes.” The all-black Neets Sound Bar comes with a vinyl-covered cabinet and a fabric-covered grille.

Bridging the sound barrier D&B AUDIOTECHNIK Stand: 7-C195 Soundscape technology from d&b audiotechnik aims to bridge the gap between the physics of loudspeaker system design and the creation of artistic material. On show at ISE 2018, Soundscape operates on d&b’s DS100 signal processing platform and empowers sound designers and engineers with multidimensional source placement, acoustic room simulation and signal matrix processor capability. The first product release of Soundscape comprises three component parts: a signal processing engine and two optional

d&b audiotechnik’s DS100 signal processing platform

software modules. The processing engine hardware takes the form of a signal processor and matrix, with which sound designers will be very familiar, says the company. The software components include the En-Scene object positioning tool, which allows individual placement and movement of up to 64 sound objects. In addition, the En-Space room emulation software enables designers and engineers to add

room emulation of reverberation signatures to any given space. Soundscape is a two-layered technology. The basic layer comprises setup and configuration via the d&b ArrayCalc software modelling tool. On top of this is the creative layer, where the sources and the sound objects (performers and instruments) are placed, and where pan and room acoustics are set.

First showcased at ISE 2017, the audioCube Bluetooth portable speaker offered a surround sound experience. This year, Allocacoc has returned with what it describes as ‘the audioCube reinvented’, the audioCube |Modular|. With the new system, users can create a personalised audio experience by pairing the speaker with other Allocacoc audio modules such as bass, tweeter, or loudspeaker, to create a more multi-layered sound. An ‘infinite number’ of the audioCube |Modular| speakers can be paired, says the company.

With an internal battery that lasts for at least 12 hours, the 11cm speakers can be used both indoor and outdoor without an external adapter. Yixia Jian, co-founder, of Allocacoc, said: “Allocacoc is an international industrial design company with a vision

to set a different standard. We are constantly anticipating and translating modern consumers’ demands into our products.”

NEW EXHIBITORS One of the attractions of ISE for attendees is the way that it manages to draw new exhibitors to the show floor every year. Here’s a selection of products from companies that are new to ISE this year, or returning after an absence

Faster data going further Reflecting positively INNEOS Stand: 15-G226 Real4K optical adapter and cables from Inneos are able to convert electrical HDMI signals to optical signals to deliver 18Gbps over 1,000m, using standard multimode fibre. Brian Peters, CEO at Inneos, said: “Some interconnect solutions attempt to deliver 4K video with 10Gbps of bandwidth, but this lower bandwidth requires visible compromises in video quality. Signals are compressed and the frame rate, colour depth or features like HDR are reduced or disabled to fit 18Gbps of signal through a 10Gbps pipe.

“Our Real4K optical adapters provide the full bandwidth needed for 4K60, 4:4:4 and HDR. We strongly believe that cables should never force users to sacrifice video quality.” Real4K optical adapters use course wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology to combine the output of multiple lasers onto a single fibre. This same technology is used to deliver maximum bandwidth in telecom and data centres. Inneos claims its architecture,

consisting of separate adapters using standard fibre, offers an easy upgrade path to 8K video when the time comes. Future Real8K optical adapters can be plugged into the existing fibre in place of the Real4K adapters and will transmit 48G of bandwidth up to 500m. Inneos does not sell directly to end customers or dealers, but is establishing a new distribution channel to offer Real4K optical adapters to resellers, dealers and installers.

a company that fits your needs. This, says Ukrainian company Flylights, is why it built its own factory – and has built up its own expertise. With the Flylights Factory opened in 2017, the company offers a wide range of services from receiving and developing technical documentation to shipment or turnkey installation of the finished product. Flylights has implemented over 7,000 projects developing technical documentation, design, content and installing objects, in a factory which can produce SMD (surface mount display) modules for LED displays, as well as provide contract services for for Ukrainian enterprises.

A wide range of waterproof mirror televisions, with screen sizes from 15.6in to 84in, is being launched. All Wemoove mirror televisions feature waterproof capability (IP65 standard), full HD or UHD resolutions, three digital tuners (DVB-T&T2/C/S2), and integrated ‘invisible speakers’, says the company. The unit turns into a mirror when switched off, and the 5mm tempered glass panel with antifingerprint surface keeps a high transparency level for high image quality. The Wemoove range can enable

viewing of TV programmes from any room in the home, from the living room to the bathroom, says the company. It is also claimed to be a suitable choice for premium public spaces like hotels, restaurants, yachts and spas, when owners don’t want clients seeing a ‘big black box’ if the screen is off. Wemoove offers a custommade frame service to its mirror televisions in a variety of distinctive styles. Any frame style and shape normally available from a framing shop can be adapted to the TV, and the mirror size can be adjusted for a perfect fit. The company also offers a built-in kitchen TV range, a waterproof white frame TV, and a built-in kitchen Android touchscreen.

4K video over IP simplified The 4K EzIP Matrix aims to make it easy to configure and manage up to 4K60 4:4:4 video

OPTICONN Stand: 15-G236 The 4K EzIP Matrix - on display from new exhibitor Opticonn during ISE 2018 - offers easily configurable 4K HDMI over IP encoder and decoding, the company says. The HDMI 2.0 over IP matrix carries up to 4K60 4:4:4 video resolution, as well as USB (keyboard/mouse) over IP, bidirectional audio, IR and RS-232 serial data. The company says the 4K EzIP Matrix has low latency of less than 30ms end to end, with each encoder and decoder able to be

powered via a POE enabled Gigabit Ethernet Switch, or with the provided power supplies. Opticonn says the matrix is easily managed using a centralised controller with a ‘user-friendly and intuitive’ web UI. It adds that the 4K EzIP Matrix software provides the ability to switch any input to any output in a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint configuration, as well as making it easy to configure and manage 4K videowalls. Opticonn also says it is straightforward to manage and control each end point, provide system monitoring with event logging, assign user access privileges, and schedule video I/Os on and off.

Space saving mixer in European preview SCHERTLER Stand: 15-T250 New exhibitor Schertler has chosen ISE for the European launch of its Arthur Prime compact mixer series. Designed for a range of audio applications, Prime mixers will initially be available in fixed 5-, 9- and 13-channel configurations. They feature the same high-quality components used in Schertler’s flagship Arthur (Format 48) modular mixer, but benefit from more competitive pricing due to their non-expandability, reduced features and compact size. Each model has a high voltage (48V) power supply for ‘superior headroom’, says the Swiss

company, and comes equipped with high-quality preamps on the input channels, as well as two aux sends, and a built-in digital reverb. Stereo inputs are actually ¼in balanced inputs with PAN, and can therefore be used as either 2x mono inputs or a single Stereo In. Designed with ease of use and a quick setup in mind, Schertler claims its Arthur Prime mixers are perfect for smaller-scale live performances, home studios, conference facilities and installations where space is at a premium, or where fewer input channels and aux sends are needed.

Schertler claims the Arthur Prime compact mixer is ideal when space is at a premium

Cleaning up after the AV industry REBEAM Stand: 2-A70 Showcasing its refurbishment methodology at ISE is rebeam. The Berlin-based company says it takes care of the products and processes that normally no one wants to deal with, focusing only on refurbished

and used products. The competitive advantages of refurbished and used video gear include access to the latest technology at a fraction of normal costs, claims the company, stating that a refurbished product is no less reliable than a new one. Jonas Huber, founder of rebeam, said: “Our first visit to ISE in 2009

laid the foundations of our success story and changed our perspective on the industry forever. Today ISE 2018 is by far the biggest and most important show for AV technology in the world. After exhibiting at four different AVIXA/InfoComm shows around the globe in 2017, we’re looking forward to be part of ISE 2018 in Amsterdam.”

SHOW FLOOR THEATRES

Great content in striking settings There are 160 sessions to choose from across three Show Floor Theatres at ISE 2018. Here’s a taster of what you can see

T

he Show Floor Theatres are a great way of keeping yourself up to date with the latest technologies and trends without even leaving the exhibition. For ISE 2018, there are three theatres, all located a short walk from each other: • The AVIXA Commercial Solutions Theatre, sponsored by Crestron, in Hall 8 (stand 8-A470). This covers the widest range of subject matter • The CEDIA Smart Building Solutions Theatre, sponsored by KNX, in Hall 9 (Stand 9-F100). As well as presentations on smart buildings, this theatre will also host sessions relating to residential technologies • The AVIXA Unified Communications Solutions Theatre, sponsored by Crestron, in Hall 11 (stand 11-A170), dedicated to technologies for improving communication and knowledge sharing in business, education and elsewhere. Over 160 unique sessions will be held during ISE 2018. No pre-booking is necessary. Here’s our selection of presentations from the Show Floor Theatres, chosen to give a flavour of what will be on offer during the show.

and Polycom will talk about the strategic importance of unified communications and collaboration technology, and how to implement key tools. Nowadays, enterprise AV is the responsibility of the CIO. In ‘Managing AV installation in a Unified Communications World’, John Tracey of StarLeaf will discuss how IT departments can create a seamless comms environment that embraces legacy systems and allows for future development. Using the cloud as an infrastructure replacement can form part of this approach. However, it’s not all about offices by any means. For instance, in ‘Factory of the Future’, Mary Ann de Lares Norris of Oblong Industries will discuss how digital transformation is being pursued by the manufacturing sector as it embraces ‘Industry 4.0’. Additionally, two presentations will discuss how digital signage networks can be used to leverage unified communications technology. Christopher Jaynes of Mersive Technologies will be talking about ‘Enabling the Display Collaboration Network: transforming independent displays into a shared communications infrastructure’; and as part of ‘The Connected Experience’, Martyn Barnett of RMG Networks will present a specific crisis emergency case study that shows how visual communication technology can provide relevant information to internal and external stakeholders.

Commercial Solutions Theatre

There will be various presentations with an AV-IT theme, particularly in the Commercial Solutions Theatre. In a session entitled ‘The Convergence of AV and IT’, Kieran Walsh, director of application engineering at Audinate, will explore how newcomers to AV can use robust models from the IT world to provide a suitable roadmap. Those looking to keep up to date with networking protocols and AV over IP have a good choice of sessions to choose from. Ethan Wetzell of Bosch will talk about ‘Protocols, Standards and Solutions’, and explaining the differences between them, and describing how they come together into actual products. Justin Kennington, president of the SDVoE Alliance, will talk about the rapid deployment of 10G Ethernet in ‘Video Over 1G Ethernet: The Ugly Truth’. Claudio Becker-Foss of DirectOut will lead a panel discussion about using AES67 and ST2110-30 in the field, in ‘AES67 in Real-World Applications’; and Richard Northwood of RH Consulting and Andreas Hildebrand of ALC Networx will talk about ‘Why AV and IT guys need to know about AES67’. On the last afternoon of ISE 2018, Yuri Kostenko, CEO of front Pictures, will give a presentation about ‘Building Space 360’ – a

NEWS AND TRAVEL

Amsterdam hotel accommodation guaranteed RAI Hotel Services is the official hotel partner for ISE 2018. It has access to over 350 hotels across the city and guarantees accommodation for all ISE attendees. The company has access to a range of hotels to suit all budgets from 1 star to 5 stars, and can also assist in the organisation of receptions and dinner parties for individuals and companies. ISE has also partnered with Air France and KLM Global Meetings to offer exclusive discounts on air travel to the exhibition. Attendees simply need to enter an Event ID Code to secure discount on return flights through the Air France/KLM Global Meetings web portal. This is an exclusive discount, unavailable through any other booking engine. The Event ID Code is 30821AF. ISE would like to inform all show attendees that there are numerous websites which, although they purport to offer hotel rooms on behalf of ISE, actually have no connection with the exhibition. rai.onpeak.com/e/ISE18/1

Shopping for education sessions just got easier A new ticket shop has been created on the ISE website that greatly simplifies choosing and registering for professional development offerings from AVIXA, CEDIA and exhibiting manufacturers. For the first time this year, all the relevant information can be accessed from a single location – www.iseurope.org/ shop. Additionally, easy-to-use filters enable you to search for the sessions most of interest to you. You can choose to see items on a particular day or days, with a particular subject category, or presented by AVIXA, CEDIA or by manufacturers. What’s particularly powerful is that these filters can all be applied at the same time. So, for instance, if you’re interested in emerging trends presentations on Tuesday

6 February, a few clicks will show you that there are four on offer from AVIXA and three from CEDIA. You can then click on each of the filtered results to find out more about each session. To further simplify your planning, if there are alternative dates and times for any sessions, these can be accessed from a pulldown menu just below the pricing information. If a session takes your fancy, you can book attendance for it there and then by adding it to your shopping cart, then proceeding to the payment page once your selections are completed. If you are interested in multiple sessions, you will probably find it worth your while to purchase an ALL ACCESS pass or a SUPERPASS – see the article below. www.iseurope.org/shop

Association passes offer all-you-can-eat approach AVIXA and CEDIA are offering quick and simple admission to their comprehensive professional development programmes thanks to their ALL ACCESS passes. These passes provide access to each Association’s education offering at fantastic value for money – just €325 (+VAT) each, or €400 for nonmembers. In addition, the Associations have teamed up to offer one all-encompassing SUPERPASS, giving delegates a

chance to attend both AVIXA and CEDIA education sessions at a price of €425 (€500 for non-members). The pass-holder will be able to choose as many sessions that fit into their timetable. (The only exceptions are CEDIA all-day sessions on the Monday and Certification Examinations on the Friday.) For those who wish to pay by the session, AVIXA seminars cost €100 for AVIXA members, €140 for non-members, and
