THE ART OF COMBINING MAN AND MACHINE Throughout these pages, the ISE Daily Preview will bring you exclusive interviews with the key speakers and industry authorities that are helping to deliver the education, insight, and thought leadership across ISE’s 2019 programme of conferences and events. We start with the show’s Closing Keynote, Tupac Martir By Paul Bray Acclaimed multimedia artist and visual designer Tupac Martir will be giving the Closing Keynote at ISE 2019. He originally trained as a painter, and the stellar client list of his London-based studio, Satore, ranges from brands such as Adidas, BMW, Dior and Ralph Lauren; venues including the Saatchi Gallery, the Barbican and the British Museum; and performers such as Elton John, Sting, Beyoncé and Imogen Heap. “We do visual design for live entertainment using different techniques in arts, media and technology,” he explains. “Whether that’s video, lights, sets, or costumes, the important thing is that it’s creative.” Martir sees no inherent tension between technology and creativity. “I started coding when I was six years old, so the whole tech side of things is very natural to me. Artistic endeavour and technical management go hand in hand here.” Asked whether the creative process begins with an artistic concept or a technology, he replies that it’s a bit of both. “I don’t always know whether seeing a certain technology has opened something in my subconscious to develop one of the stories I had in my head, or whether I had an idea and eventually found the technology I needed to make it a reality.” “But I tend to believe – or I want to believe – that it’s more about drawing things up first and then finding how we can get technology to make them work. I always draw everything before it goes into a machine, and I carry a sketchbook to note down ideas. Ideas brew in my subconscious until I need them, then I select the best technology that will allow me to enhance them. “I’m a big believer in that type of workflow. If you make things on a machine you’re limited by the machine, not by your intelligence or creativity.” Choosing technology that complements the job, enhancing rather than limiting the creative process, is critical for Martir. So in his Closing Keynote at ISE 2019, as well as showing some of his recent

work, he plans to demonstrate the kind of tools that he and his studio would use to create just such a keynote presentation – the equivalent of a painter’s portrait of himself at the easel. He clearly relishes the sleight-of-hand, and hints that his delivery may be as theatrical as his work. “Anyone who’s seen me talk knows I can’t stand still. When I gave the keynote at USITT in 2016 I did 9,000 steps!”

‘What interests me is how I can create a bridge between old and new technologies and, by combining them and finding a place in between them, generate something brand new’ Asked about some of the technologies that excite him, Martir says, “I love motion capture and I’m very interested in AI and seeing where it will go.” He’s fascinated by the idea of sensors that can tell what your fingers and hands do, so you could create commands and control objects without ever touching them. Need to bring in a strobe? Just wave your hands in a certain way. “I’m amazed by the amount of things that are starting to come to market for tracking,” he adds. “I think tracking is really the future of this industry, just like automation once was the future. The integration of lighting, cameras, real-time rendering – all those elements combined are creating worlds that three years ago would have been impossible. “What interests me is how I can create a bridge between old and new technologies and, by combining them and finding a place in between them, generate something brand new that inhabits both worlds.” Conference: Closing Keynote Time: 12:00 Room: RAI Forum

Aryanour Djalali Founder and chief executive DNA Barcelona

SMART NATURE By Ann-Marie Corvin Taking inspiration from his twin passions of nature and global travel, Aryanour Djalali, founder and chief executive of DNA Barcelona, has built a portfolio of work that fuses organic design with futuristic innovation, with each build possessing its own unique cultural stamp. Hotel Boumerdes, in Algeria, is a case in point. When the architect first arrived on site, he noted the country’s conservatism and how many of the local buildings seemed “frozen in time”. Yet when he looked towards the coast, he became transfixed with the form of a wave moving towards the beach, and he used this as part of the building’s design. The structure took on a wave-like form, which also managed to incorporate elements of Algeria’s Martyrs’ Monument (a commemorative sculpture celebrating the country’s independence) as a nod to its national identity. The hotel comprises two, steel wave-like structures (the sea-facing side houses all the rooms, each with its own sea view) with an open courtyard in the middle and sustainability woven into the fabric of the design. According to Djalali, taking inspiration from nature and the shapes, colours and structures that it produces o!en evokes an emotional response in its inhabitants. “These designs allow visitors to make a connection with nature and to find a kind of balance and peace,” he says. Other notable DNA Barcelona projects include the Boutique Hotel Argel, based on the structure of a leaf as well as using the geometric, fluid and organic motifs of Algerian art, and the Cocoon hotel and resort in Mexico – a holiday getaway in the middle of a forest – which is inspired by ‘the primordial sensation of the nest and the need for protection’. Djalali is set to talk through some of these projects and more during his keynote at this year’s Smart Building Conference at ISE 2019. Advances in technology have led to design solutions such as CAD, BIM, 3D and video all helping to fully realise buildings to the client at the pre-build stage. Simultaneously, client expectations have changed too. Djalali observes: “They want involvement at a much earlier stage. Before, we were offering projects that the client either accepted or rejected. Now, it’s important to give the client entry to the project, make them feel part of it.” Finding out what the client feels, what inspires them, understanding their culture as well as the site’s history is crucial in providing that emotional buy-in, Djalali adds.

Djalali names German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, an early 20th century modernist, as an important influence. A more recent inspiration is the late Zaha Hadid, famous for her elevating and liberating architectural geometry, and rendering three-dimensional new spaces with fluid forms, which also take their beginnings from natural elements. Both of these architects sought to establish new styles that represented modern times, creating iconic structures that changed the landscape of our cities. So what will Djalali seek to establish in the new era of the smart city? “In the digital age, the client wants the easiest and fastest solutions, therefore smart buildings should be designed to facilitate the life of this user,” he says. “This can be achieved by implementing automated processes to monitor the edifice’s maintenance and operations, such as illumination, safety, communications, heating, and so on, using sensor devices or microchips and cameras.”

‘Our goal is to create a balance between humanity, the city, and the environment’ But ultimately, while the IoT and machine learning may radically influence buildings of the future, Djalali thinks that designers should not forget to factor in sustainability, energy efficiency and our own primeval connection to nature, and the way that this makes us feel. “For DNA the city of the future is based in the spiritual and emotional needs of residents. Our goal is to create a balance between humanity, the city, and the environment,” he concludes.

TUESDAY 5 FEBRUARY

Dr Gill Ferrell

Lead consultant ASPIRE Relationship manager EUNIS

RAISING THE BAR IN HIGHER EDUCATION AV By Paul Bray If Gill Ferrell were writing an end-of-term report on AV in higher education it might read, “Tries hard, some excellent achievements, but could do even better”. “I feel as if technology-enhanced learning is really starting to come of age,” says the lead consultant at educational consultancy Aspire. “But AV in further and higher education remains a very mixed picture, and what’s taken for granted in one institution might be cutting-edge or even blue-sky thinking in another.” As relationship manager for EUNIS (European University Information Systems), Ferrell works closely with AVIXA to stimulate dialogue about how universities are using AV. “For three years we’ve run a higher education conference as part of ISE [AVIXA’s What’s Next... Higher Education AV Integrated Experiences is taking place on 5 February at ISE 2019]. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase some worldwide good practice and enable people to question and discuss what they do and develop realistic action plans for their own institutions.” By better engaging learners and supporting collaboration and co-creation, AV can have a truly transformative effect on the learning experience, Ferrell believes. “Immersive learning environments using virtual and augmented reality are a good example. On vocational courses virtual reality headsets allow learners to explore simulated real-world scenarios that are simply too expensive and/or dangerous to recreate on-campus. Active learning can also appeal to students who don’t readily engage with traditional academic approaches but may be used to gaming environments in their social lives. Collaboration is an essential part of active learning. Going beyond one-device-per-student to multi-user AV devices, such as interactive multi-touch tables, is still cutting-edge, but there are some good examples, not least in medical education where virtual dissection tables have obvious advantages over the use of cadavers.” In 2019, Ferrell believes the trend towards active learning will increasingly drive the use of educational technologies and the design of learning spaces.“People are starting to think about their ‘nextgeneration digital learning environments’, and while we’re a long way from seeing the end of virtual learning environments or platforms as we know them, they’re increasingly becoming part of a wider ecosystem that also includes more immersive and collaborative environments. The trend towards creating more active learning classrooms and interactive lecture theatres is likely to continue.” For the future, Ferrell is excited about AV’s potential to enable social and connected learning across physical boundaries. “I can envisage telepresence having a big impact. It could allow many more

‘It’s not too far-fetched to envisage artificial intelligence being linked to robotics or telepresence to give students personalised learning support’ students and researchers to have direct interactions with the world leaders in their specialist fields, and be very valuable in supporting inter-institutional and interdisciplinary research. “On a related note, a significant number of colleges and universities are already experimenting with chatbots and digital assistants (mainly to assist with administrative and logistical queries), and it’s not too far-fetched to envisage artificial intelligence being linked to robotics or telepresence to give students personalised learning support,” she adds. Originally an archaeologist and self-confessed technophobe, Ferrell eventually embraced new technology when its benefits became clear. But she remains a champion of the needs of end users rather than technology for its own sake. “The most successful new developments are those which involve students as active members of the project team. And the more that teachers and support staff experience the use of AV that’s robust and intuitive and delivers real benefits, the easier it is to persuade them to try something new.”

On Tuesday 5 February, from 13:00-17:00, in partnership with EUNIS and SCHOMS, AVIXA will be hosting What’s Next… Higher Education AV Integrated Experiences in Room E102. The conference will cover expectations, advances, and solutions for enhancing engagement and experience within higher education environments and will be moderated by Dr Gill Ferrell.

Sarah Cox EMEA sales director disguise

PUTTING THE PIZZAZZ INTO LIVE EVENTS By Paul Bray For Sarah Cox, EMEA sales director at disguise, the 3D real-time media platform, the modern trend to turn everything into a performance has opened up a whole new career. “My background is in theatre scenic and lighting design,” she explains. “But now the ‘live experience’ that was previously reserved for theatre and music has become the means of engaging audiences in everything from brand events to live sport, so my skills became very transferable to the world of AV.” Having a hybrid background it’s perhaps not surprising that Cox is getting excited about mixed reality. “We’ve been discussing mixed reality more and more. Virtual reality hasn’t been adopted much in live entertainment because it’s essentially an individual, isolating experience and we want to create an audience experience that’s shared. But mixed reality – combining augmented, virtual and real worlds to create truly new experiences – is a pathway many will explore in 2019 and beyond, with mixed reality workflows creating new formats to view, share and stream the experience of live events.”

SMART VISION

Another cutting-edge technology catching Cox’s eye is interactive content, or ‘smart content’. “This can be engaged with to create truly unique and different experiences. Real-time content generation tools are being used to create full, interactive 3D worlds that can be played back and interacted with in real time. This links nicely with demands for lower latency inputs. The role of a media server in mapping content from a variety of sources keeps growing as smart content engines emerge or transition into our industry. Smart content engines can be run inside media servers, or run externally and piped in via inputs to the media server, so latency is critical to maintain the illusion.” As well as pixel counts scaling up thanks to high-resolution LED, the live events industry is also talking about increasing image quality. “High dynamic range and 10-bit pipelines offer more clarity, more image detail and more flexibility on what can be brought out of the image a"er shooting. Media servers are now part of the conversation about colour space and can perform an essential role in HDR workflows. At the top end of the spectrum this involves being able to support 10-bit, uncompressed image sequences, live HDR cameras and performing colour space conversion on the fly.” In the field of projection, larger, brighter laser projectors will make mapping shows more accessible, as fewer projectors will be needed to cover large buildings and objects, Cox believes. “Video projection is still largely a specialist’s workflow to get high-quality results.

16

‘Mixed reality, combining augmented, virtual and real worlds to create truly new experiences, is a pathway many will explore in 2019’ “However, I think 2019 will also focus on tools that allow projection mapping experiences to be installed in a more permanent environment and with less complexity, allowing the end client to maintain them over longer periods of time.” On the disguise stand at ISE, Cox expects to have a lot of conversations about the adoption of IP video. “Through deep discussion with attendees we can understand how they need the technology to progress. ISE is a great way to learn about what’s hot, what’s fading and what your company needs to have or do right now. “ISE is a show for focusing on integration and solutions, and what I enjoy most is the type of conversations you have on the floor. Attendees are not looking for a product but for solutions that solve real-world challenges, and I always look forward to this kind of discussion throughout the week.”

Trey Courtney

Global senior vice president and chief product officer Mood Media

NEW TECHNOLOGIES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND EXPERIENCES By Ian McMurray The Digital Signage Summit has quickly established itself as a must-attend event at ISE. This year, one of the highlights promises to be the ‘Fireside Talk’ delivered by Trey Courtney, who is global SVP and chief product officer of Mood Media, a worldwide in-store media solutions company. “I’ll be making three key points,” he says. “First: retailers should focus on the customer experience when planning and deploying new services into their physical locations. Second: data and content are key and should be planned ahead of time. This allows retailers to make adjustments quickly once new technology is deployed and allows them to gain insight into their customers’ motivations and preferences. Third: retailers should leverage technology partners that can provide more than one service. Picking separate vendors for each component – so"ware, content, service and so on – can lead to long-term challenges that are hard to fix once the technology is deployed.” It’s clear to Courtney that digital signage is – inevitably – changing. He sees it as morphing into more interactive experiences that integrate with many other services such as queuing, POS and data platforms.

ENTHUSED

“I see opportunities for retailers to invest in touchscreens and tablets that allow rapid deployment of new experiences like wayfinding and product configurators,” he notes. “This gives customers tools to tailor their experience while in the retail environment.” Courtney is enthused by some of the recent projects on which his company has worked, citing fashion retailer Primark as an excellent example of how boundaries are being pushed, enabled by new technology. Primark stores now feature LED screens in their windows rather than merchandise; in some stores, the company has taken the o"en-overlooked escalator and used LED walls to transform it into a feature. It has also created large LED walls on which content is sensortriggered to attract the attention of passers-by. “Additionally,” he continues, “we’ve deployed interactive product experiences for large telecom brands in the US and are deploying interactive digital signage for large automotive brands across Europe and Asia.” Courtney is also excited by the opportunities he sees for retailers as they fight back against online merchants. “There’s much more they can do in terms of leveraging digital signage and interactive applications that allow the buyer to really get comfortable with, and excited by, the product,” he believes. “Technology like this can help to upsell without a hard sell. Retailers can also do much more with social media.”

“In-store technology is now allowing them to leverage frequent content updates and online techniques like A/B testing, just as web marketers do,” he adds.

ENVIOUS GLANCES

Inevitably, the growth in the digital signage market is attracting envious glances from companies not yet addressing it. What would Courtney’s advice to them be? “If you’re not familiar with so"ware, then you should start understanding that world and becoming conversant in how so"ware and customisation of services can be done for businesses,” he responds. “The old world of AV being just hardware is waning rapidly, and clients want suppliers who can provide both hardware and so"ware solutions.” Like many others in the digital signage industry, Courtney is intrigued by the opportunities delivered by Big Data, and is hoping that at ISE 2019, he’ll uncover new services to help clients collect that data and then turn these into meaningful insights for retailers. “I’d also love to see what new mobile technologies are coming into the marketplace,” he adds. With almost 450 ISE exhibitors – around one-third of the total – claiming to have something to offer in terms of digital signage, it seems likely that Courtney will find what he’s looking for. DSS: Reading the signs The Digital Signage Summit is back again – literally, by popular demand – at ISE. Ian McMurray talks to the event’s chairman Florian Rotberg about what delegates can expect For the third year in a row, ISE will host the Digital Signage Summit (DSS), with over 150 senior executives from throughout the digital signage value chain expected to take advantage of the unique perspectives it has become known for delivering. With another year of growth behind it, and exciting developments on the digital signage horizon, it promises to be no less of a must-attend event – especially for enterprises either using or planning to use digital signage, and new entrants into the market, Florian Rotberg as professional services providers seize the opportunity it presents while M&A continues to accelerate even faster than expected. “The past 12 months has seen digital signage become a $7 billion industry in EMEA alone,” noted Florian Rotberg, managing director of digital signage research company invidis consulting and a co-organiser of the event, along with ISE. “We’ve seen 55in screens becoming the new norm; LED is starting to encroach on what was once LCD territory, especially in videowalls; and, increasingly, digital signage is now part of a wider, omnichannel marketing strategy.” Once again, DSS will kick off with the invidis keynote which will deliver insights into trends and drivers, strategies and an overview of relevant M&A activities. The focus will be on new market entries and strategies for existing digital signage market participants. An Intel keynote will cover trends and drivers in IoT and how IoT solutions complement digital signage. Also on the agenda is Trey Courtney, who is global SVP and chief product officer of leading in-store media solutions company Mood Media. “As always,” said Rotberg, “ISE will be a great show for the digital signage industry. I’m looking forward to seeing more affordable fine pitch LED; more solutions featuring AI; new special purpose displays; even brighter laser projectors; new business models; and more experience marketing features. “I’m sure I won’t be disappointed,” he smiled. The half-day conference takes place on 6 February from 09:00-13:00 at the Okura Hotel, just a few minutes from the RAI. Tickets are €250, or €175 for AVIXA and CEDIA members. Owen Ellis Chairman AV User Group

GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH By Ian McMurray The concept of user groups began way back in the early days of computing in order to share knowledge and experience. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the oldest user group still active is an IBM user group founded in 1955. User groups progressively morphed from manufacturer-specific to industry-specific, giving rise to organisations like AVUG. The AV User Group, to give it its full name, isn’t quite as old. It was originally formed on an ad hoc basis in the late 1990s, with a more formal structure put in place in 2009. AVUG now has a remarkable 1,400+ members worldwide – a size of organisation that demands professional management. Enter Owen Ellis. A 35-year veteran of the AV industry, he joined AVUG in 2004; became its chairman in 2009; and, in late 2017, was asked to take a full-time role running the organisation and, since then, membership has grown by 40 per cent. How has that happened?

GREAT REPUTATION

“We’ve worked very hard when opening new locations – we’ve recently opened a new group in Silicon Valley – and we have a lot of support from both our members and sponsors introducing members in those locations,” explains Ellis. “We’ve also deepened our relationship with AVIXA. Beyond that, with this great reputation we appear to have gained, we get a lot of traffic to our website signing up for membership that doesn’t come from recommendation but through media articles, trade shows and so on.” AVUG is once again at ISE, with Ellis one of two moderators at AVIXA’s What’s Next... Enterprise AV Integrated Experiences conference on the Wednesday a"ernoon. “An integrated AV experience isn’t just about the technology,” Ellis says. “It’s possible to deploy a great technology solution in a poorly designed space and then discover that no one uses it. We’re focusing this seminar on the integrated environment.” Ellis’s session will include design, acoustics, colour finishes, lighting, reflections – both light and sound – furniture, temperature and ventilation and so on. “It’s important,” he continues, “that AV managers and designers understand the impact that these environmental elements have, and how they contribute to the success – or failure – of the outcome.

‘An integrated AV experience isn’t just about the technology’ They need to take some responsibility for ensuring they are considered by their larger design teams.”

OPEN MIND

Like the other 80,000+ expected attendees, Ellis is looking forward to the show. “It’s generally the things you discover that you weren’t aware of in advance that are the most rewarding. However, I go because it’s a must-attend industry networking opportunity and obviously to see new technologies, as so much is launched or previewed at ISE these days. I believe these are the same reasons it’s such an important trade show for our members.” Ellis has, however, observed the increasing interest his members are taking in the potential of big data and the opportunity it presents, pointing out the increasing numbers of both hardware and so"ware products that now make endless data available to end users. “What many of our members are researching is how best to capture and mine this data to help them determine their AV and unified communications strategies,” he notes. “What is it that their internal clients really do with their systems? How do they use them? Which technologies are used most? Why are they used – or not used?” That kind of data mining looks set to give the AV industry a whole new momentum – a momentum that Ellis is planning to reflect in AVUG’s continuing growth and success.

On Wednesday 6 February, from 13:00-17:00, in partnership with the AV User Group, AVIXA will be hosting What’s Next… Enterprise AV Integrated Experiences in Room E102. The conference will focus on how to create value in an organisation by concentrating on the customer experience and will be moderated by Owen Ellis and Greg Jeffreys, director and consultant at Visual Displays.

Roger McArdell Director and chief technology officer Ashton Bentley

MAKING ROOM FOR SIMPLICITY By Ann-Marie Corvin In his former role as global head of media services for a large multinational bank, Roger McArdell witnessed an investment banker smash up a meeting room system with a cricket bat a!er it failed to connect him to a video conference. For McArdell, this action crystalised the need for “utter simplicity” in meeting room design. “Ninety per cent of meeting rooms are the same or similar,” he claims. “There’s no reason why the technology needs to be built from scratch every single time.” All customers want, he argues, is a VC that requires no technicians, bells or whistles, just one that is easily able to share presentations and data. This is the philosophy behind his firm Ashton Bentley, which McArdell set up eight years ago with business partner Roger Vinton. The firm manufactures off-the-shelf meeting room systems that are scalable and replicable and can be managed and monitored in the same way that other network devices are controlled. McArdell, who started his 30-year AV career at BT, says that many AV suppliers pushed back on the firm’s initial proposition. “The whole industry services its clients with lots of different boxes via systems integrators which try and tell you they add value, but that’s the PC market of 25 years ago,” says McArdell. Ashton Bentley, he claims, is the Dell or the Compaq of the AV industry, both disrupters which came along and put everything on a motherboard. Most of the firm’s clients are now large corporates, which see the benefit of standardising their systems, while ISE itself is also a customer; using Ashton Bentley systems in all its meeting rooms.

COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Simplifying meeting room kit and putting a service wrap around it to make it more user friendly can be challenging, however, an irony that’s not lost on McArdell. “To achieve simplicity can be very complex in terms of system designs,” he admits, adding that it can still take months, rather than weeks to get a meeting room system up and running and bug free. The company also designs all its own circuit boards, which McArdell adds has posed its own challenges since all the main chip manufacturers have gravitated towards China. Component sourcing is also currently an issue, with electronics manufacturing experiencing a capacitor shortage due to their high demand in electric cars. “Keeping it simple” also involves delivering completed rooms, which means supplying the furniture as well as the technical infrastructure.

24

McArdell admits that getting IT and facilities teams to talk with each other can sometimes prove challenging. “It’s always a problem to get AV integrated into tables, it’s easier to provide the table, but it can be a struggle to get both parties in the same room on the same page.” Even Brexit poses a challenge for a British manufacturer like Ashton Bentley, which exports almost 90 per cent of everything it produces. While Europe isn’t a key territory in terms of customer base, because proposals for infrastructure in place around customs control are at this stage vague, McArdell worries that the movement of goods “may grind to a halt”.

‘There’s no reason why the technology needs to be built from scratch every single time’ On the plus side, there are new technologies on the horizon that are set to make office-based video conferencing even easier for end users. Ashton Bentley is now experimenting with some patent-pending machine learning and AI technology to see how systems are able to understand an individual’s movements and needs in a meeting room. The firm will be showcasing some of its findings at ISE. All the time, McArdell adds that the focus is on the needs of the end user. “Many AV manufacturers don’t even consider it, and a lot of them don’t understand what it means. But I’ve been on the receiving end of a cricket bat, and I know!”

THURSDAY 6 FEBRUARY

Scott Willsallen Director Auditoria

SOUND APPROACH TO STADIUM ENTERTAINMENT By David Davies On Thursday 6 February Scott Willsallen will present the keynote at the AGORA stadium and sports venue technology conference, presented by MONDO | STADIA. One of the world’s most acclaimed sound and AV consultancies, Auditoria has designed and delivered audio and other performance technologies for four Olympic Games, two Commonwealth Games, two Rugby World Cup tournaments, and countless other major international events.

What will be the main focus of your keynote?

The emphasis will be on audio/visual technologies and their role in pre-game and half-time entertainment. [A few years ago] many stadiums were less about fan engagement and more about displaying the scores and providing somewhere to sit and watch the game. But more recently there have been great technological changes regarding sports presentation at the top-end, and the kind of developments that we first saw in 2012 [at the Olympic Games in London] are now trickling down and being seen in sports presentations all over the world. So I will be looking at these changes and drawing on some of the projects with which I have been involved, including London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Baku 2015. I will also discuss some venue projects, including Sydney’s ANZ Stadium and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is undergoing refurbishment at the moment.

To what extent to do you think that immersive audio, including the incorporation of on-site PA and ambience into sports broadcast coverage, is now informing the development of entertainment venues? It is definitely coming onto the radar more and more. The video side has managed to move along quite a bit quicker than audio in terms of delivering what we would describe as an immersive experience, but lately immersive audio has started to show incredible progress thanks in part to specific manufacturers. I think one thing that has led to the change is the recognition that creating the kind of audience experiences in stadiums that you would previously have had at motor shows, for example, can be pretty powerful. We just worked on a project in Abu Dhabi where enormous projection screens combined with a live orchestra and multiple loudspeaker arrays wrapping around the audience. That kind of immersive experience is something that event producers are wanting more of, while stadiums know that [the ability to offer] it can be seen as a differentiator.

Day-to-day what would you say is the cause of the most headaches for you as an AV professional?

Probably spectrum. So many countries have different ways of dealing with spectrum licensing, both on a long-term basis and temporarily for events. If you are working on a large-scale event such as the Olympics you are going to get whatever you need, and you will be looked a"er by the regulator. But at the next tier down you can find that wireless users are thrown into one bucket of ‘it will probably be alright’. It does feel a bit haphazard when you consider what some of those links are being used for!

‘Immersive audio has started to show incredible progress’ What are the technology areas that you are most excited about exploring further at ISE 2019?

Immersive audio control platforms and projection mapping, in particular the whole replay side. We are doing a lot of work with various companies to develop a more sophisticated way of linking audio, video and lighting tracking in three dimensions, making it possible for the three elements to work in unison [more effectively].

New for 2019: Hospitality Tech Summit by HTNG Explore opportunities in this thriving sector for the AV industry The professional AV industry worldwide generated $178 billion in 2016. Through 2022, it is expected that global AV revenues will increase 4.7% annually, creating an additional $52 billion in value. Hospitality is forecast to make up a sizeable chunk of that growth, as companies look to leverage technology (and IT) to deliver new and innovative experiences for hotel and resort guests. To investigate the opportunity, ISE is launching the Hospitality Tech Summit: a day-long event that forms part of the ‘ISE at the Okura’ programme. Through a series of education sessions and discussions, the event will help to educate those in attendance on the latest trends – including AV installations and arrival experiences, among others – plus networking opportunities to connect with others in Europe to share and discuss their own deployments. The Summit is hosted by the global trade association Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG), which dedicates its services to advancing business through the collaborative development of open standards and technology solutions in the hospitality industry. The Hospitality Tech Summit by HTNG will take place at 09:0017:00 at the Hotel Okura. For details and tickets, visit www.iseurope.org/conferences

Giles Sutton Senior vice president of industry engagement CEDIA

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF HOME TECH By Paul Bray ISE’s co-owner CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) celebrates its 30th birthday in 2019, so the show is the perfect venue to kick off its anniversary celebrations with all the members who have made this milestone possible. But it will also be working hard on building the future. “The cornerstone of our ISE activities will be an extensive, four-day education programme to help technology integrators and industry professionals grow their skills, discover emerging technologies and be inspired for growth and success,” says Giles Sutton, CEDIA’s senior vice president of industry engagement. “We’re especially excited to headline the training at ISE with a Home Cinema Design Masterclass on Monday 4 February, led by the world’s foremost home cinema experts, Joel Silver, Theo Kalamorakis, Anthony Grimani, and Guy Singleton. “Elsewhere we’ll be hosting free, 20-minute CEDIA talks on our stand, covering a wide range of topics, introducing attendees to disruptive new technologies and challenging traditional ways of thinking. “New for ISE 2019, the Main Stage will host free-to-attend educational and thought leadership presentations produced by CEDIA, ISE, AVIXA and AV Magazine. CEDIA will host some of our members who won top honours in the CEDIA Awards programme, providing an inside look into some of the best projects in the industry.” CEDIA has grown exponentially since 1989. Now representing more than 40,000 home technology professionals from more than 3,700 companies worldwide, it’s a strong voice in the home tech industry, with a particular focus on education, standards and best practice. “In January we’re launching 13 new online courses, with 70 available by the end of 2019,” says Sutton. “They’ll prepare individuals for CEDIA certification, and they’ll be delivered through a brand-new education portal that will make the process easy and intuitive. We’ll also be hosting inperson training at more than 100 events in 2019, making CEDIA training more accessible than ever before.” The biggest challenge for CEDIA members continues to be finding and retaining quality employees, so part of the organisation’s strategic plan is to raise awareness of the home tech industry as a potential career opportunity and develop suitable training qualifications for the new entrants who will guarantee the industry’s future.

32

“We’re dedicated to developing the Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship standard to encourage young professionals into the industry,” says Sutton. “It was approved by the Institute of Apprenticeships in 2018 and we’re hard at work identifying appropriate training partners with a view to launching the scheme in 2019.” So what should attendees look out for at ISE? “LED display technology can now satisfy the most demanding consumers and create large, seamless on-wall images,” says Sutton. “However, where projection uses the acoustic transparency of screens to accurately deliver sound it remains a challenge for LED. At ISE, look for manufacturers addressing that challenge, and see fewer speakers being asked to do more, and audio that delivers more channels at higher resolutions.

‘We’re excited to headline the training at ISE with a Home Cinema Design Masterclass led by the world’s foremost home cinema experts’ “Few doubt that 8K screen resolution is coming, and 8K projectors are starting to appear for high-end home theatre, so expect to see examples at this year’s ISE.” Attendees can also expect AI for voice control to become increasingly significant, with advanced capabilities enabling more natural speech. “ISE 2019 may be too early for evidence of AI-enabled voice interfaces,” says Sutton. “But you never know…” Although he’s a new boy on the CEDIA staff, having joined in 2018, Sutton is a long-time fan of ISE. “I’ve been attending for years,” he says, “and I’m always blown away by the technology on display, the training that’s offered, and the endless opportunities to network with industry peers.”

Terry Friesenborg

Chief global officer AVIXA Director Integrated Systems Events

A LIFETIME OF CHANGE By Adrian Pennington Every ISE show is special for AVIXA chief global officer Terry Friesenborg, but this year’s holds extra meaning because it will be his last. A"er 20 years of service to the trade body, Friesenborg will retire at the end of the year. Friesenborg’s leadership in the AV industry goes back four decades, beginning as a volunteer member of the organisation’s board while general manager of Audiovisual Systems. Indeed, there is no-one better than Friesenborg to set ISE 2019 in the context of tremendous and ongoing industry change. “It’s been a long and fascinating journey since the time I first got involved in the industry at the National Audio-Visual Association,” he says. “Then it was very domestic and US-focused. It was renamed in 1983 to the International Communication Industries Association to reflect a more global agenda. Of course, it became InfoComm International in 2005 and then AVIXA in 2017.” It is technological change over that time that has been most profound. Friesenborg charts the evolution in the 1970s and ’80s from film, slide and 16mm to video systems that were bulky and expensive.

‘We are at the forefront of a cultural and technological transformation’ “Any system that was remotely complicated was regularly prone to failure, so presentation was inherently locally oriented,” he explains. “Gradually, AV became networked, and now we have this world of collaborative communication where AV is a part of everything we do.” Although the AV industry has been driven by technology and change, Friesenborg emphasises its underlying purpose has remained simple: supporting the need for people to come together and communicate. “That was really the motivation behind transforming what was a domestic, US-focused organisation into a movement with a global outlook,” he says.

PROPOSAL FOR THE FUTURE

Friesenborg helped launch InfoComm in Singapore in 1995, before beginning to engage the European market in association with Photokina and finally launching ISE as a fledging trade show platform in 2004 with CEDIA. “I recently re-read our business proposals from the time and I’m amused by what we thought it might be and what ISE has turned into. It’s beyond any dreams we had when discussing the launch,” he says. “Attracting 80,000-plus attendees from more than 180 countries speaks not only to the success of the show and the wonderful work of Mike Blackman and his team, but also to how strong we are as an industry. “AV touches everything we do, from our time in an airport, to our experience in a retail store, to videoconferencing as a daily part of work, and to any live event we experience,” Friesenborg says.

“AV today is as much, if not more, about experience as it is about communication. So, while I believe ISE has competently managed the success of the show, it’s the strength of the industry that is responsible for its dramatic growth. We are at the forefront of a cultural and technological transformation.” That shi" continues at ISE 2019 and beyond, where attendees will experience macro trends such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), which stand poised to impact businesses and consumers for decades to come. Friesenborg sees more change on the horizon. “The ubiquity of displays is a foundational element,” he says. “Technology like OLED is starting to come into its own because the maturity of the substrate is allowing exciting new form factors. “AI will have a huge impact when we start to process deep data,” he predicts. “Right now, we spend a lot of time with thin data and don’t understand the data sets we need. And VR has been around for a long while, but it’s isolating when you put on a headset. Augmented or mixed reality is likely to be an avenue of greater impact in the short term.” Even though Friesenborg will be stepping away from his role in the AV industry, he’ll be watching.

AV OVER IP... THE NOW AND THE FUTURE Striking a balance between bandwidth and compression technology is the key to success, believes Paul Harris of Aurora Multimedia

IPX-TC3 series

Paul Harris CEO/CTO Aurora Multimedia The AV industry has evolved over the past few years to make AV over IP a primary method of distribution. The high-quality, low-latency solutions that exist today can be grouped into two distinct categories – those based on 1G networks, the other based on 10G. Each have their unique application based on cost, image quality, latency and a variety of other features. However, there is no argument that increasing image quality and other bandwidthhungry features added to AV over IP systems will make higher bandwidth systems necessary for moving forward. Even in today’s market, a 10G network may seem overkill to many. But a 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 signal already exceeds 10G, requiring a 1.3:1 compression ratio. As you can imagine, the bandwidth needed for 8K resolutions or signals with higher refresh rates will either require more bandwidth, higher compression, or both. With more compression comes lower quality, meaning 1G networks will eventually become obsolete for this purpose. As seen over the past few years, 10G switches have greatly reduced in cost and increased in port count and capability, PoE+ for example. As the demand for bandwidth increases, the cost associated with bandwidth should continue to drop, making 40G and 100G switches attainable for AV over IP solutions. So who will be the winners moving forward and where is the AV over IP market going? The SDVoE Alliance has been the undisputed leader in the 10G space, and its bet on a higher bandwidth solution will pay off. But as video bandwidth requirements increase, organisations such as SDVoE, HDBaseT and other market players will need to continually innovate and balance bandwidth and compression technologies, while manufacturers will need to build on top of these technologies to provide unique solutions for their customers.

The next-generation IPX-TC3 series 10Gbps transceiver is capable of 4K60 4:4:4 with a frame latency of only 100us (.1ms). It is the world’s first 10G SDVoE product to have redundant fibre version and selectable copper fibre in a single unit. Aurora is also the first company to utilise PoE with 10G and has worked with Ethernet switch companies to develop and ship 10G PoE switches, paving the way for cleaner installations. Aurora’s latest offering combines a variety of IP technologies and features under one unified protocol using a simplified topology. Seamless switching, USB 2.0 (480Mbps), Dante/AES67 8-channel (another Aurora first), 1Gbps Ethernet and control are some of the core capabilities of the IPX series. The IPX-TC3 is available in both a box and wall plate version, giving users the options they need for a clean install. A new pro version adds even more features for the most advanced applications.

ReAX The name ReAX represents action/reaction which is the essence of control automation. ReAX is an award-winning control platform that is unique since it is not limited to a single manufacturer but to all who qualify. This is the first example of interoperability of not just protocols and structure, but of the actual code itself. It is not limited to this, however, as IR libraries, macros and more can all be shared and organised through a single portal. The ReAX hardware includes the IPE-REAX-1, a small control processor that can be docked to Aurora’s IPX and VLX series AV over IP products, and well as the HT series HDBaseT products to provide fully-fledged control processing. This hardware is also available to other qualified manufacturers to utilise for fast deployment in their products. IT/AV CONVERGENCE OPENS THE DOOR TO OPPORTUNITY Increasing convergence between AV and IT hardware solution providers/brands gives the market better choices and more/ bigger benefits

iiyama’s new LH5510HSHB high-brightness signage display The LH5510HSHB is a professional high-brightness digital signage display featuring 2500cd/m2 brightness and a brightness sensor for a crystal-clear image any time of the day. It is equipped with a non-blackening IPS M+ LED panel for exceptional and long-lasting colour and image performance. The LH5510HSHB comes with a landscape and portrait orientation, a 24/7 operating time and an ultra-low power consumption; offering businesses an effective and energy-efficient solution to help capture their audience’s attention in even the brightest of places.

Lewis Clifford Sales manager professional displays iiyama A decade ago, retail and QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) businesses had to work with multiple brands and resellers for their IT and AV hardware needs. Today, the lines between IT and AV are disappearing and customers have the luxury of selecting a full range of commercial solutions not only from one reseller, but also from one brand; giving businesses increasingly better choices and bigger benefits. This one-stop-shopping is a direct result of the ever-growing digitalisation within companies. In the past, big retail brands mostly used print advertising in their shop sometimes combined with a POS touchscreen for product information. Nowadays, more and more shops aspire to have digital displays that enhance the shopping experience. Not only does this digitalisation make it desirable for IT departments to work with a single point of contact for all their IT and AV support, but also the customers’ expectations are a big driving force for digitalising the shopping experience. With technology brands and hardware solution providers converging, it’s the end client who experiences the benefits. More convergence means that retail businesses can have a closer relationship with technology brands and suppliers for a tailored development with plenty of room for evaluation and a personal approach. It also gives technology brands better insights into customer needs and can result in a shorter development cycle where new products and product innovations can be more easily brought to market. This results in a more diversified product line-up, and a great improvement on total cost of ownership. Convergence is a key focus for iiyama. We believe in offering our end customers a diversified, feature-rich product line-up with affordable, quality products that can cover almost all display application needs. But what sets iiyama apart from our competitors is our personal service, speed of response and direct support pre and postinstall. That is what makes iiyama a true hybrid brand; giving better choices and bigger benefits.

New display technologies can enable users to reach their audience more successfully, improve meeting outcomes, jumpstart collaboration and make a lasting impression in large venues, says NEC’s Thomas Walter

Thomas Walter Section manager, strategic product marketing NEC Display Solutions Europe The advance of digital signage across all industries, especially retail, and the increase in corporate meeting facilities and remote collaboration and creation, is leading to an ever-rising demand for visual display solutions. Customer and user expectations are changing so rapidly that it can be difficult to know how to begin to transform the visual experience. Visual solutions will continue to gain importance in light of key global trends. Ongoing digitalisation, VR/AR, AI, IoT – they’re all influencing our business positively and visual solutions gain traction in every area. We can see our industry meeting with new convergences in many applications and industries. dvLED moves rapidly into ‘classic’ largeformat display applications and larger displays move into meeting room areas which were traditionally the preserve of projector technology. dvLED opens new opportunities for large canvas presentations and stunning opportunities for mediatecture, integrating technology perfectly into the architecture. We are already seeing great developments here, especially in the airport and retail sector. dvLED will complement the huge range of large-format display solutions and enable the best solution of choice for the specific customer situation. Retailers need to tackle their audiences more effectively and create engagement and sales upli# with targeted digital signage solutions, including digital posters, large-scale messaging, infotainment and personalised digital communication. The large venue and installation projection market is very positive, largely driven by laser technology. We clearly see projection technology entering new applications in signage solutions based on the benefits laser technology can offer. For the corporate office environment, there is a new demand for innovative display solutions for huddle spaces, content co-creation, meeting and presenting, and boardroom uses, including NEC’s next-generation InfinityBoard, stand-alone dvLED screens and new 4K UHD displays. The journey towards better signage, including digital and retail signage, collaboration, communication and a richer visual experience starts with understanding how modern display technology enables organisations to make lasting impressions.

BRINGING END-USER VISIONS TO LIFE End-user needs and desires are driving development across the AV industry, according to Vivitek EMEA’s Holger Graeff

Holger Graeff General manager Vivitek We are well and truly in the age of BYOD, and so the driving force behind a lot of the innovations and progressions in AV tech now come down to connectivity and wireless collaboration. The ability to connect multiple devices and seamlessly share content for efficient collaboration is paramount to the developments at Vivitek, with our offerings such as the NovoConnect range, collaborative panels and solutions with built-in NovoDS capabilities. Another disruptor in the AV space is solid state lighting, with laser and LED options offering lower maintenance, better performance and being easier to use. I can see this overtaking standard bulb technology in the future. But with technology constantly evolving alongside the requirements of modern organisations, more strain is being put on devices like the projector or the touchscreen to perform at a more advanced standard when it comes to optimum sharing and connectivity. This means that end users will, more o#en than not, find that they are buying in to more than just one product when they look for an AV solution – with projectors, touchscreens and digital signage solutions now accompanied by so#ware, controllers and o#en training on how to better utilise the solution. In fact, one of the challenges facing resellers and distributors in the AV sector is ensuring that, where new and innovative capabilities can mean more complex and sophisticated solutions, end users are being properly informed about how to get the most out of the features that their solution offers. Ultimately, when it comes to AV solutions, innovation lies in the needs and desires of the end users, and providing solutions like LED video walls, perfect for large venues, means that Vivitek can bring concepts to life and make possible the end users’ vision for their organisation, no matter how big that vision may be.

COMING ON STREAM Streaming and interactive video is becoming ever more popular in a number of environments, and AVoIP is paving the way for this to continue in the future, says ZeeVee’s Art Weeks

Art Weeks IP product manager ZeeVee Several industry research studies have documented the steadily growing use of streaming and interactive video within all types of organisations as an essential, multi-dimensional element of business operations. The ability to enable virtual collaboration, meetings and group presentations, corporate communications, instruction, training and other interactive activities, in real time or on-demand, and with high cost-effectiveness, is only becoming more essential in keeping pace with the working world. In fact, the global market for video conferencing alone, estimated at $5 billion in 2016, is forecast to exceed $10 billion (in 2016 dollars) by 2026. The rapidly emerging Audio Video over Internet Protocol (AVoIP) technology is providing the capacity for real-time and interactive applications that enhance the end-user experience, as well as significant engineering and cost benefits stemming from simplified system infrastructure, configuration, deployment, control and expansion. As such, it is destined to become the must-have foundation for commercial AV solutions – in business, education, government, industry, hospitality, healthcare, entertainment, retail, public safety and every other market where pro-AV integrators make their living today. AVoIP is also paving the way to support the end-users’ future needs. It is essential to consider that innovative, interactive business and workplace applications, potentially involving artificial intelligence or virtual or augmented reality, are already on the horizon. It’s sensible to assume that future AV systems should be designed to operate on an AVoIP platform that is likely to be compatible with these technologies. Some integrators have been slow to move to the future in recommending AVoIP solutions to their customers. Some have not been properly trained in the technology, while others may figure that if something works and meets customers’ expectations then why make changes? This view is short-sighted and will prove costly to those who are slow to adapt.

ZyPer4K Silent AVoIP decoder The fanless ZyPer4K Silent AVoIP decoder reduces mechanical noise for sound sensitive locations, while bypassing electrical noise that affects the performance of connected video displays. A 10Gb Ethernet connection and 1Gb network port enables its use with a wide range of IP network devices and WiFi network equipment without extra cabling.

ZyPerMX2 two-channel IP encoder The ZyPerMX2 two-channel IP encoder is a cost-effective solution for corporate and commercial applications requiring the distribution of HD video content up to 1080p@60Hz with multicast and unicast UDP and RTP encoding support. It follows the well-received ZyPerMX4 fourchannel encoder and is also based on the company’s award-winning HDbridge 3000 technology. MEETING THE NEEDS OF ENTERPRISE IT Software is changing the game when it comes to flexibility, futureproofing and innovation, according to Shure’s Chad Wiggins

Chad Wiggins Senior director networked audio systems Shure Audio/visual and IT domains are converging like never before, and that’s increasingly enabled by technology. Take, for instance, conferencing systems and how they’re being integrated into businesses. The hardware is either being displaced by so!ware, or it’s becoming smarter by virtue of so!ware and other technologies from IT and consumer. And, as such, companies are working to develop supporting so!ware solutions that are just as smart to ensure customers’ needs are met now – and six months into the future. In fact, there is this new wave of demand for products that offer an end-to-end, comprehensive solution; one that enables full-system design, deployment, management and control across IT systems. Acknowledging this transition, Shure has committed itself to supporting networked audio by creating advanced audio solutions that meet enterprise IT needs. Previously, hardware was the name of the game when it came to product development, but we all know physical products have a shelflife. Now, it’s all about so!ware, and Shure currently has more so!ware engineers than any other discipline in product development. This added component allows for complete control across systems; ultimately making products more flexible while increasing their life-span. For example, so!ware and firmware can be regularly updated over time based on user feedback. The solution can improve and evolve as needed to ensure end-user satisfaction while allowing us to develop new tools tailored to your needs quickly and more effectively. Releasing such so!ware updates in a way that ensures all products, systems and so!ware solutions are interoperable and compatible across the entire product ecosystem can be a challenge. While the industry has come a long way, there’s more to be discovered – especially when it comes to array microphones, audio processing and true enterprise audio solutions. No matter the area, Shure continues to strive to be the best in the industry while aiming to create forward-thinking products that meet and exceed customer expectations.

AVIXA CTS programme extends global reach AVIXA’s Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) programme, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has extended its global reach. Through ANSI’s acceptance as a signatory of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA), the CTS programme has gained a higher level of international recognition. “AVIXA is a global association, and we champion initiatives that support a global workforce,” said Adrienne Knick, director of certification at AVIXA. “The work our members do requires them to cross international borders and recognition of their professional certification does now, too.” For more than 30 years, AVIXA has administered the CTS programme, which is recognised as the leading AV professional credential. There are three CTS credentials: general (CTS), design (CTS-D), and installation (CTS-I). There are currently more than 12,000 CTS holders and over 2,000 of those are CTS-D or CTS-I holders. Being admitted to the IAF MLA further demonstrates that ANSI accreditation follows global requirements for accreditation bodies (ISO/IEC 17011) and has successfully shown its competence through a rigorous peer evaluation process. Many government bodies only accept certifications that are accredited by an in-country accreditation body or an IAF MLA signatory. With ANSI’s acceptance to the IAF MLA, AVIXA’s

certifications are now equivalent to those accredited by local accreditation bodies in over 34 countries. This number will continue to grow as more accreditation bodies become signatories. “ANSI accreditation provides assurance that the three certifications offered by AVIXA meet the stringent requirements of ISO/IEC 17024 and acceptance of these certifications among signatories to the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) for Persons,” said Dr Vijay Krishna, senior director, credentialing accreditation programmes, ANSI.

Sports venues a ‘market to watch’, finds AVIXA Research Sean Wargo

To compete with other sports venues and fans’ ever-advancing home entertainment systems, sports venue executives are investing in audiovisual solutions. This is the finding of the 2018 Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) focused on sports venues, produced by AVIXA, which investigates the opportunities and

challenges for providers of pro-AV solutions and technologies in this space. “This is a market to watch. Venues and events are expected to produce $27.7 billion in pro-AV revenue in 2018 worldwide and grow at a healthy rate in the next five years, according to our Industry Outlook and Trends Report (IOTA),” said Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence, AVIXA. “It’s an exciting space for AV providers to work in. Stadium executives are determined to bring the wow factor to outdo other stadiums, so they are motivated to embrace advanced technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality and interactive displays. However, their investments in standard AV technologies, such as lighting, audio, and security and surveillance, take priority.” Competition from the at-home viewing experience drives AV innovation in venues. A seat with a view of the playing field is insufficient to put fans in seats when 85 per cent of households worldwide have flat-panel TVs. Fans want an electrifying atmosphere, with the entertainment beginning even before they’ve passed through the gates. They don’t want to miss any action when they leave their seats for refreshments. These expectations are met with innovative AV, and venue executives are exploring the cutting edge of technology to further enhance their space. Nearly 100 per cent of venue executives surveyed plan to upgrade their audio equipment in the next 12 months. Video displays and video projection are the next most popular AV purchases. Survey results indicate investments in digital signage will increase the most significantly over the next year. The sports venues report is available for purchase at avixa.org/MOARsports. AVIXA members are eligible for discounts.

Structural changes during anniversary year LANG AG Stand: 1-H50 2018 was an exciting year for Lang, as not only did the company celebrate its 40th anniversary, it also made key structural changes at management level. On 1 July Peter Mathia was appointed by the supervisory committee to the management board of the company. He shares this responsibility with chair Tobias Lang, thus doubling its member count. Mathia joined the company in 2006 a!er successfully completing his master’s degree. Following his first experiences in the LED specialist field he quickly became Lang’s lead expert in projectors. During his time as product manager projectors and head of service he decided, on behalf of the company, on the most successful 20,000 ANSI-Lumen projector in the history of the AV trade. Mathia is a pioneer in laser phosphor technology and predicted its success many years ago. Since 2009 he has been actively involved in shaping the corporate strategy as part of the management team and has held a large number of personnel responsibilities in the company. “Peter Mathia embodies the qualities of team spirit, family and competency. With his broad market knowledge and professional experience Peter has the tools to set the right course for our

Amplifier manufacturer seeks distributors B&K AV Stand: 5.S45 Amplifiers are the focus for American electronics manufacturer B&K AV, which is at ISE to find global distribution partners for all territories. Two amplifiers are currently available: the HTA 7.150 and the MRA 16.75+. Both models are designed by Morris Kessler. The HTA 7.150 is described by B&K as a flagship Class AB design featuring 7x150 watts per channel (wpc). The sonic performance of the product is, according to the company, the culmination of 45 years’ experience and is claimed to be on a par with any amplifier near its price. For the MRA 16.75+, B&K says it reimagined multiroom audio. Shunning conventional digital amplifiers, the company instead chose to design a Class AB unit delivering 1,500W total output at 8 ohms. It is, B&K claims, the world’s first residential power amplifier to offer different outputs. The MRA 16.75+ features 12 channels (six zones) at 75wpc and four channels (two zones) at 150wpc native with no bridging. Future models will include a phone-sized integrated amp and a one-of-a-kind modular soundbar, the company notes. “Integrators looking for unique, reliable electronics and speaker solutions should look no further,” said Barry Wosk, president, B&K AV. “Our products have been developed specifically for the demands of today’s integrated systems.”

New detachable screens provide a more flexible set-up option for Avatus

Berlin-based professional audio technology manufacturer Stage Tec is presenting its IP-based mixing console Avatus as a theatre console with detachable screens for the first time. The company said many theatre control rooms are built so sound engineers are unable to see the stage from their mixing console. The theatre version of Avatus is designed so that the upper screen row can be removed and placed elsewhere. The Avatus IP console connects via standardised TCP/IP interfaces, and each module has its own IP address. Modules can be removed, configured and installed anywhere within the network. The audio console comes without a centre section and consists of only three different modules. It is available in sizes of between 12 and 96 faders. René Harder, a member of the Stage Tec management board, said Avatus was developed “to create an optimal symbiosis of flexible touch technology and proven haptic control elements. The concept, based entirely on IP technology, is suitable for a wide variety of situations. Avatus can be tailored to various applications in theatre, broadcast and live.”

Largest LED display on show SONY Stand: 1-N20

The Crystal LED display has a resolution of 8K x 4K

ISE 2019 will see a demonstration of the largest Sony Crystal LED display system to have been shown in Europe. The display sports bezel-less technology delivering an 8K x 4K resolution, and better than 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio display that is viewable from a 180-degree viewing angle. With 10-bit colour depth, wide colour gamut and a maximum rate of 120 frames per second, Sony’s Crystal LED display features brightness of up to 1,000 cd/m2. The display also supports HDR, offering what the company says is an even more immersive viewing experience. Crystal LED displays are created from 320 x 360 ZRD1 modules that measure 403mm x 453m x 100mm and weigh 10kg each. Each ZRD-1 features a matrix of surface-mounted red/green/ blue Ultrafine LED elements, each measuring less than 0.003 mm2. This allows 99% of the display’s area to be completely black which, according to Sony, enhances contrast ratio when compared with conventional surface-mount displays. Designed for automotive, retail, corporate lobbies, showrooms and entertainment environments like theme parks, gaming/ eSports and cinemas, Sony says it has already seen uptake for the system across Europe.

Changing the face of tour guides AXITOUR Stand: 14-M120

Nubart tour guides allow museum visitors to get a guided tour direct on their smartphone

Until now, audio guide services were something that only big museums could afford. That may be why only 15% of European museums offer them. Nubart is hoping to change that, by offering credit card-sized audio guides that the visitors can buy, use with their own smartphone and then take home. The codes printed on the card make the card non-transferable, keeping its commercial value for the museum and making each one unique and collectible. Visitors stream digital content (including audio, images and videos) to their smartphone, without having to download an app or queue to collect or return any device, and for museums with bad data coverage or limited WiFi, Nubart also offers an offline mode. But if a conventional audio guide service has been out of reach for most small museums, the same applies when it comes to obtaining data or doing surveys among visitors. The audio guide cards are a data collection tool by themselves: Nubart can collect a lot of anonymous information from the visitor’s smartphone, like the country of origin. According to the company, both anonymous data reports and the integrated survey help museums to better understand their audience.

Powered with an integrated lithium-polymer battery Digital Android Battery A-Board in action

Unveiled at ISE 2019 will be the Digital Android Battery A-Board for which a mains plug is no longer needed to deliver digital messaging for installations in any public spaces. With a lightweight design and integrated castors this screen is easily portable. In a first for Allsee, the display is powered with an integrated lithium-polymer battery which offers more than 12 hours running time. The 49in display features a 700cd/m² high brightness IPS panel with an ultra-wide viewing angle, a prototype of which was shown at ISE 2018. Thomas Fraser-Bacon, marketing director, Allsee Technologies, said: “Following [last year’s] show the design was altered based on the great feedback we received from visitors. The display can be updated in two ways thanks to our Queen’s Award-winning digital signage solution. The first is by a simple USB plug and play method for applications where there are budget constraints. “The second is by upgrading the screen to use our online CMS portal, unlocking a host of features including the ability to remotely update and manage content, use multiple media zones and schedule content to play at different times. This solution features an integrated Android board, so if required third-party so$ware can also be used to control and update the content.”

According to the company, these features are part of Microso"’s vision to bring the ‘power of the intelligent cloud’ into the workplace, aiming to use a mix of AI, IoT and productivity tools to create a more productive and collaborative environment. Businesses could use this data to improve the management of heating, cooling and room booking systems based on how the space is really used. As well as the IoT solutions, the Sharp WCD has been designed to work with Microso" tools such as Office 365 and the Microso" Teams platform for group collaboration.

4K poised to overtake HD in the conference room LIFESIZE Stand: 11-D150

4K offers quality, value and ease of use

Lifesize, pioneer of the first HD video conferencing system back in 2005, has added another innovation with the introduction of the first and only global 4K video calling solution, the 4K Lifesize Icon 700. “The company that introduced the first HDcapable video conferencing system is now taking things to the next level,” said Ira M Weinstein, managing partner at analyst firm Recon Research. “At a time when many solutions are sacrificing quality of experience in favour of cost, Lifesize is taking the opposite tact by providing full-motion 4K video and content sharing. The combination of these latest offerings and the company’s fieldproven cloud service will pave the way for new use cases where the combination of ease of use and high resolution are a must.” For many, video conferencing is more than just a meetings tool – it’s a vital element of an end-to-end communication strategy. According

to Lifesize, a business isn’t just about products, services or brand. It’s about people, conversations and relationships; the ability to communicate effectively is what drives a company forward. With the 4K Lifesize Icon 700, 4K quality is priced alongside competing 720p solutions. The company uses the example of television sets – people no longer buy 720p TVs, they buy 4K because it represents the best quality, it is future proof, and the technology is priced lower than ever before. The same is true for video conferencing equipment – the combination of quality, value and ease of use makes 4K the clear solution for the future of the conference room.

The company is retiring the previous flagship model name, imotionG6, for this new technology. Improvements include reduced HVAC weight for easier handling and a simplified opening system with only two screws and pneumatic side covers. Cosmetic masks are also now part of the system and don’t have to be removed when opening. In terms of thermal management and performance the appliance offers improved reliability and redundancy with four internal fans instead of one. The company also claims improved dust ingress protection for the system.

Thomas Darling Senior vice president of development and education CEDIA

EXTENDING THE SCOPE OF EDUCATION By David Davies “With plenty of CEDIA education on offer, there really is something for everyone at ISE 2019,” says Thomas Darling, CEDIA’s senior vice president of development and education. It’s an assertion that is backed up by a comprehensive four-day educational programme, encompassing everything from a specially curated Home Cinema Design Masterclass to a series of Fireside Chats on the new Main Stage – all of which (and much more) are covered in our interview. Can you offer some comments on your association with ISE over the years, and the current impact that the show has on your annual planning and activities at CEDIA? We are proud co-owners of ISE, and the success and growth of the show over the years has had a great impact on CEDIA training. The show in many ways now represents the jumping off point for our yearly training programme as it hosts one of our largest training offerings at the start of the year. It’s an incredibly important venue for us to connect with our members and provide them with the resources and training they need to be successful. What is CEDIA planning for ISE 2019? ISE 2019 is the perfect destination for learning. We’re bringing an extensive four-day education programme to the show, designed to help technology integrators and industry professionals grow their skills, discover emerging technologies and be inspired for business growth and success. We’re very excited to begin our education programme with a brand new, specially curated Home Cinema Design Masterclass on Monday 4 February, led by four of the industry’s most prominent experts: Joel Silver, Theo Kalamorakis, Anthony Grimani and Guy Singleton. This will be a major highlight of ISE 2019. It’s a fantastic chance for attendees to learn from the best in the business about the video, audio and environmental factors to consider when designing a professional home theatre. They’ll also see how they can capitalise on this knowledge in the lucrative home cinema sector. Other highlights include a great range of technical courses, such as not-to-be-missed, hands-on workshops; deep dives into subjects such as acoustic calibration and design; and a host of other courses to inform and improve integration expertise. Alongside these, we’re presenting emerging trends courses, covering topics from advanced display technology to augmented and virtual reality. Finally, our series of business-focused courses will explore how companies can put the right processes in place and apply best practice to prosper in the years ahead.

‘We’re aiming to make CEDIA Training more accessible than ever before’ CEDIA Talks will also make a return to the CEDIA booth on each day of the show, exploring a variety of hot topics in quickfire, 20-minute sessions. Available for anyone to attend with no need to book in advance, the sessions will explore new technologies and ways of thinking – join us on 1-E20. Over on the Main Stage, we’re hosting a number of fireside chat conversations where winners from the prestigious CEDIA Awards programme will be in the hot seat to share the secrets of their successful projects. With plenty of CEDIA education on offer, there really is something for everyone at ISE 2019. More generally, what is new for CEDIA’s education programmes, and what steps are being undertaken to increase the scope and quality of CEDIA’s curricula? In January, we’re launching 13 new online courses, and we’ll have 70 available by the end of 2019, all delivered through a brand-new education portal to make the process even easier and more intuitive for the learner to find the right education to fit their needs. These courses are designed to give individuals a clear route to CEDIA Certification and the education pathways best suited to them. As well as online advancements, we’re aiming to make CEDIA Training more accessible than ever before, with over 100 in-person events planned for 2019. CEDIA has also been actively engaged in the revisions of several standards and recommended best practices to elevate professionalism and drive success in the industry. We’ve recently released several white papers, with a goal of publishing six new white papers in 2019. What do you expect to be the key areas of debate and concern for the wider industry at ISE 2019? As technology continues to evolve and change at a rapid rate, so the home technology professional must be able to adapt quickly and bring innovations into their business for the benefit of their customers. ISE 2019 is always a great place to see what’s new and understand where technology trends are heading. For example, the number of IoTenabled devices and powerful, higher bandwidth networks are set to be a big talking point at ISE 2019. So too will be the growing role of AI and voice control technology in the home. We also expect higher resolution audio and video innovations to make an impact on the show floor.

INNOVATING FOR A SMART NEW ERA

Joost Demarest

As Presenting Show Partner for ISE 2019, KNX has big plans. We hear from CFO and CTO Joost Demarest, and marketing manager Casto Canavate, about the innovations we can expect to see in Amsterdam and the trends shaping the association’s outlook

Casto Canavate

By Jo Ruddock How do you describe KNX to someone who hasn’t heard of it? KNX was one of the first home and building automation systems, and has been on the market for almost 30 years. KNX has evolved and adapted to new market demands, such as wireless communication, and an increased awareness for secure technology in smart homes and buildings. KNX has worked, is working and will continue to work on solutions that are the most suitable, most updated and the most secure available. What plans does the KNX Association have for ISE 2019? KNX Association will show how KNX has adapted the technology – used by more than 465 Members – to market needs by presenting: KNX and IoT. The KNX Standard has formed part of the global IoT world for some time and by introducing KNX IoT, KNX underlines its leading position and opens new opportunities in the integration of KNX with the IT world. KNX IoT aims to reduce the required KNX knowledge and open the current ecosystem to non-KNX IT specialists through ‘outof-the-box’ operation, while still allowing advanced configuration and adaption by specialists. ETS Inside. A single tool to plan, design and configure a smart home. Now we can offer all the benefits of the KNX standard in a mobile application that is easy to understand and allows KNX newcomers to design and commission a smart home. Why is a KNX solution relevant to end-users in the residential and commercial building space? For its entire existence, KNX has been confronted with a multitude of systems that are proprietary. While this can seem the right choice for a manufacturer as it protects their investment, it hampers the further proliferation of automation to become the technology used in all homes and buildings. The reason for this is that the building owner inevitably wants all equipment in a building to seamlessly work together. That is why KNX has been hitting the same nail since it was founded: there is no way around ensuring proven interoperability between products from different manufacturers to replace traditional installation techniques with modern home and building automation. And, as far as we can see, this message is finally sinking in with people in the home and commercial markets. What innovations and trends are you expecting to see from KNX Members on the KNX stand at ISE that will appeal to these audiences? A new era has begun as the smart home becomes suitable for the masses. Systems that were complex and not intended for the mass

54

‘There is no way around ensuring proven interoperability between products from different manufacturers to replace traditional installation techniques with modern home and building automation’ market when they were developed are accepted by end-users as soon as they are available in a simple, plug-and-play version. Two different approaches are likely to establish themselves: on the one hand, professional installation with comprehensive networking under a long-term strategy and, on the other, ad-hoc networking in which smaller, independent systems are interlinked through a network connection. KNX members are fully aware of the coming scenarios and therefore will be presenting new products and solutions that will cope with the future. Also on the KNX booth at ISE 2019, KNX system integrators will be able to get onsite aid through consultation. A KNX expert will be stationed at the booth on Wednesday and Thursday mornings to answer any specific questions regarding KNX projects, and work with visitors to find the best solutions to their puzzles. Appointments for this can be made via the KNX website. Why is ISE important for KNX? ISE is one of the most important trade fairs on the KNX calendar; this year no fewer than 30 KNX members will be exhibiting at the show with their own booths. We think that not only integrators and installers but also end users will find the new developments very attractive because KNX is now capable of fully integrating the entire living environment including home and building automation, multimedia and IT. As such, our hope for ISE is that it will help us increase the demand for KNX technology. Visit KNX at ISE: Stand 9-F120 www.knxatise.knx.org
