community relations. As we assembled this issue, viewing hundreds of images and selecting which furnishings, textiles and accessories to cover, I considered our remarkable design community, which we are fortunate to report on in the pages of this magazine. The scope of talent, craftsmanship, ideas and influence—from architects and builders, to decorators, manufacturers and showrooms—is pretty astonishing and exceedingly inspiring. We shine a spotlight on these creative forces in the community, and discover what turns them on when it comes to design and lifestyle in our new Insider department. Check it out, and then expand beyond our pages by heading to luxedaily.com where we cover the design community at large.

Clockwise from top left: P.E. Guerin: I toured this foundry and was blown away by the handcrafted workmanship and attention to detail. Schumacher: When I previewed Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s new collection for Schumacher…well, let’s just say my head is still swimming with notions of how I’d decorate with this cut velvet gem. Neil Denari: Architect Neil Denari’s influence reaches sky high, particularly in West Chelsea where his firm’s HL23 condo is firmly planted. Hutton Wilkinson: What’s more impressive: The stellar art direction of Hutton Wilkinson’s latest tome, or the jewelry itself? You decide, because I still can’t!

fall. We’ve been busy here at Luxe Interiors + Design: Not only have we been working hard to ensure this issue is one of our best ones yet, but we’ve been rubbing elbows with the region’s top design professionals to find out what’s new and exciting in the local market.
From an in-depth tour of the Club House at Spanish Oaks—complete with delicious food and Grey Goose cocktails—to an artist showcase hosted by Luxe and Senter Design on the 42nd floor of the Austonian—where guests enjoyed wine from Cameron Hughes—it feels like we’ve been everywhere.
But don’t worry if you haven’t made it out to one of our events just yet, we have a full schedule planned for fall: Come out to the Decorative Center Dallas’ Celebration of Design, Cattle Baron’s Ball or the 2nd Tuesday educational series at the Houston Design Center. We look forward to seeing you there.

shop class. WE ASKED THREE CREATIVE FORCES IN TEXAS TO SHARE WHAT THEY MOST ENJOY WHEN IT COMES TO ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND REVELING IN THEIR STATE. HERE, INTERIOR DESIGNER RENEA ABBOTT, OWNER OF HOUSTON’S SHABBY SLIPS, DIVULGES HER FAVORITE SPOTS FOR MUST-ORDER BANANA TARTS, VINTAGE DESIGNER FINDS AND STUNNING LIGHT-FILLED GALLERIES.
FASHION FORWARD While visiting a friend in Aspen, I discovered The Little Bird, and much to my delight, they just opened one on Post Oak Boulevard in Houston. Owner Keele Loyd stocks the shop with an always-fresh selection of new and vintage designer clothes and accessories, like vintage Chanel pearl earrings, studded fuchsia Celine totes and gorgeous Versace frocks. thelittlebirdinc.com 2
DESIGNER DIGS The David Sutherland showroom at the Decorative Center Houston is inspiring. I especially like the boutique feeling it has; it is on the smaller side so you are not overwhelmed with choices. They do a great job of editing the fine lines they represent, like Dessin Fournir—one of my favorites—and Lorin Marsh, who has wonderful mirrors and accessories. davidsutherlandshowroom.com 3

FRENCH FLAVOR Houston is booming with new, chic restaurants. At the moment, my favorite is Brasserie 19 with its simple French fare. Order one (or all!) of their spectacular tartares or carpaccios for the table, treat yourself to the delectable caramelized banana tart and take in the style mavens and trendsetters that frequent the spot. brasserie19.com 4

WORK OF ART The Menil Collection is a Houston mainstay. It has the largest assemblage of Cy Twombly works in the country, which is housed in a small, exquisite gallery designed by architect Renzo Piano from an initial sketch by the artist himself. Direct sunlight is diffused throughout the space with a spectacular roofing system of glass and steel louvers. menil.org

MERCURY RISING Austin has some fantastic, unique shops, like Mercury Design Studio, which I especially love for its inventive selection of accessories and artifacts. It stocks cool pieces perfect for adding those final touches of personality that make a room stand out. Stop by and pick up one of the beautiful vintage glass or pottery pieces they always have on tap to add color and shape to any space. mercurydesignstudio.com

FILM BUFF The Arthouse at the Jones Center in Austin is stunning; the gravity-defying concrete and wood staircase at the entrance is jaw dropping. It is such a dynamic space, but it’s the artwork that takes center stage. Their rooftop film series—through November 30— is a relaxing end to the day, and a chance to see incredible documentaries about art and architecture. arthousetexas.org 3

FOREIGN AFFAIR I am enamored with La Condesa in Austin. It serves up killer Mexican food and great tequila cocktails in an inspiring bohemian-meets-chic setting. They have delicious specials, but I always go back for the unique ceviches: Order some with a passion fruit and spiced mango margarita and sit out on the patio—it’s great for people watching! lacondesaaustin.com 4

MIX MASTER When in south Austin, head to the Hotel Saint Cecilia. It’s an oasis of cool, free-spirited individuality. MODERN MARVEL Collage 20th Century Classics in Dallas’ Design District is a superb midcentury modern furniture store. Owners Abby and Wlodek Malowanczyk really know their stuff and stock the shop with original, refurbished and museum-quality pieces from luminaries such as Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, Knoll and a host of other prominent designers of that era. collageclassics.com 3
ESCAPE ARTIST For a quick retreat, head to the Rough Creek Lodge & Resort in Glen Rose. It’s brimming with Texan comforts: an enormous central limestone hearth, ample wood bar and a long, shaded veranda that grants gorgeous sunset views. The lodge offers hunting, fishing, horseback riding, etc., but I go for Executive Chef Gerard Thompson’s rustic American and wild game cuisine—the breakfasts alone are worth the drive! roughcreek.com 4

One thing in particular has remained since Hutton Wilkinson took over the late Tony Duquette's legacy: the jewelry is still fearless, as evidenced in Wilkinson’s new book Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry, due out this November. The lavish, unapologetic designs can be seen in all their extravagant glory in the gorgeous pages of Wilkinson’s third book. “Tony always said that the difference between animals and humans is adornment,” says the charismatic designer. “We each have to eat and procreate to survive, but how we choose to clothe ourselves is the true difference. That’s magic.” Magic, indeed. Organized by color and material, Wilkinson’s latest oeuvre showcases the captivating explosion of gems—all one-of-a-kind pieces—that is synonymous with the Tony Duquette brand. “This book was written to inspire individuality and creativity in others,” says Wilkinson. “It’s for anyone who aspires to pretty things.” abramsbooks.com

MUSEUM QUALITY When an artist is revered as one of the most significant painters of his time, there’s only one natural course of action: build a comprehensive museum dedicated to preserving his legacy. On November 18, the Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver within a cantilevered structure designed by Allied Works Architecture, shedding natural and metaphorical light on an oeuvre that has largely never before been on public display. clyffordstillmuseum.org

The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. From rich French nubuck suede and buttery aniline leather to polished German calfskin, the new collection features three distinct styles—Crave It, Need It, Want It—each with a different inspiration and finish. The new skins have roots in fashion, borrowing inspiration from iconic pieces like the Gucci moto jacket, Hermès Birkin bag and rockerchic leather pants, just like the designer herself, who was recently named to “The Vogue 100,” a group of influential leaders in the industry known for their distinctive taste. mooreandgiles.com

Tony Duquette’s sunburst fixtures cast a twinkling glow on gray hues and silver metallic walls at the recently opened 2,200-square-foot private event space adjacent to Chicago’s Michelin star-rated Sepia. Gary Lee Partners, who designed the restaurant, was tasked with creating a sophisticated complement to the eatery’s sexy-cool interiors. The design team added stylish details, like a vintage 1910 walnut and pewter bar and an oversized antiqued gilded frame mirror that spans the back wall, which add a dramatic milieu to the versatile event space. sepiachicago.com

Mustique is most definitely a destination where dreams are built (both metaphorically and architecturally). Martin Grubman, P.E. Guerin
Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.
From historical reproductions to whimsical Flights oF Fancy, Fine decorative hardware Firm p.e. guerin FaithFully creates its handcraFted masterpieces just as its Founder did beFore the turn oF the last century.
bespoke
HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.
WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.
HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.
DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto blended sleek, contemporary lines with tongue-in-cheek ingenuity when concepting his classic Paimio chair. Deftly pushing the limits of tightly bent birch plywood, Aalto formed a sinuous frame and seat with an appealingly structural personality. Inspired by Marcel Breuer’s iconic Wassily Chair, the Paimio is deliberately crafted using native birch, which underscores its organic form.

Designers Michael Partenio and Stacy Kunstel were inspired by an antique candelabra that sent them on a quest to inject old-fashioned romance back into today’s interiors. By modernizing the shape, adjusting the height and adding a lacquer-like finish, their fresh-feeling take allows for a luminous glow to settle over its onlookers. Handmade exclusively in the United States and composed of North American maplewood, the candelabra is available in a variety of hues.

For designer Eduardo Garza, there’s more to art than simply fashioning together creative ideas: Only after ethically sourcing and personally selecting all the materials that encompass each one of his pieces does the design process begin. Precious metals, stones and other natural elements of the highest quality are then manipulated into striking objet d’arts, such as this vibrant amethyst accented in white gold leaf and cradled by a gilt base.

05 CLEAN CUT
DOUGL AS GALLOWAY, OWNER , NEST MODERN
With a location in Austin and a newly opened showroom in San Antonio, Nest Modern’s dedication to the midcentury modern movement and its attention to craftsmanship is evident in nearly every piece the store offers. Douglas Galloway tells us more: The decision to open up the showroom came from a true love for modern design. My business partner and best friend, John Allison, and I really wanted to bring something to the market that represented our design aesthetic because we felt like there was a deep void. We usually look for very clean lines in the furniture we offer at Nest, because those pieces are the ones

that work the best in our clients’ homes, whether their spaces are modern or transitional. The most important thing to me is being hands-on, and that’s true for John, too. We’re always here, at one store or the other, and we always have a pulse on what’s going on at the showroom, from the big stuff to the little stuff. Our clients range across the board— from young hipster types to a more distinguished clientele. They come looking for help, and we give it to them: Our whole team makes itself available for design services. There’s not one project that has come into the store that every staff member hasn’t looked at and had a part in. nestmodern.com

conteMporary Business sleek, clean-lined, fresh—if this sounds like a description of contemporary architecture, it is. these same words can also apply, however, to today’s most forward-thinking businesses. Just as more and more buyers are seeking modern structures with airy spaces and a minimum of design detail, so are ceos seeking to create new business models in today’s marketplace. part of this new world concerns visibility. expanses of windows in modern structures bring the outdoors in, making the world more visible, just as cyberspace does today. robbie Briggs, ceo of Briggs Freeman sotheby’s international realty, well knows that a cyber world is completely opposite from the confinements of yesterday’s real estate business. “When my father began his real estate company in 1960, it was a different age,” said Briggs. “great big books were hauled around by agents containing the city’s listings. once hidden between pages, our properties now are instantly visible around the world on the sotheby’s international realty’s website, as well as the online sites of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.” the new home buyers are looking for agents that offer out-of-the-box, strategic approaches to help maximize their time and their investment. Just like all great contemporary architecture still has a strong foundation, however, so contemporary business still has the bedrock of integrity, service and good values. While the playing field has changed, those qualities don’t. cyberspace has also created a worldwide business playground, and communications can take place overseas by touching a button on a cell phone. Moving through layers quickly, easily, from ipad to cell phone to skype for global business meetings beats the hassle of hauling luggage on a transatlantic flight. an appointment with executives in darjeeling can take place in one’s minimalist, modern office in dallas, and one is home for dinner. in today’s age, where one has to grow and change to be relevant, fresh ideas in architecture, as in business, are welcomed. an extraordinary flight of fancy, the guggenheim Museum Bilbao designed by Frank gehry is clad in glass, titanium and limestone. curves that are apparently random are actually created to catch the light. an imaginative idea exquisitely executed, the museum represents the best of today’s business models, like the work of apple’s steven Jobs. designing today’s businesses is challenging, but it’s also fun. real estate offers wonderful opportunities for living and for a livelihood. people, however, are still the key ingredient, as always. “While you may have a great vision, you still have to have great people to get you there,” said Briggs. “i have been fortunate to have had the best through the years.”

And while style and color trends are much more important with textiles than in her other artistic pursuits, she’s careful to tow the line: “You do have to be aware of what’s going on so that you’re producing relevant work,” she confesses, “but I don’t always follow trends.” To Ketelhut, the response to her work is what’s most important: “What I do makes me happy, but what I love is putting it out there for people to see.” lindaketelhut.com; 917.608.2422

images that jump out at him with almost brutish force. “I look for photos that tell me something new about my humanity and my place in the world,” he says. “I’m looking for bodies of work that are new and extraordinary.” Rohrbach developed his passion for the medium at age 12 when he bought his first camera. By high school, he had his own darkroom; by college, he was studying every art photography book he could lay his eyes on. After earning a doctorate from the University of Delaware, he landed at Amon Carter, where he found himself on the other side of the viewfinder. “Photography is the medium of our time,” says Rohrbach. “Through exhibitions, I’m able to transform an empty room into a story about life.” cartermuseum.org; 817.738.1933

Luckily, Maison—the line of exquisitely crafted reproductions she started in 2008 when she became worried that the supply of European antiques was dwindling—is a big hit in both towns, despite their different needs. “Homes are larger in Houston,” she gushes, “so everything has to be done on a grander scale!” tarashaw.com; 713.533.9744

CHAS ArCHiteCtS Perhaps it’s the clarity that the firm brings to even the most complex residential projects. Maybe it’s the spirit of artistry that pervades each masterful design. Or is it the humble, old-school approach to customer relations that has elevated chas architects in markets from Texas to California to Mexico and beyond? Time and again for clients who work with company president Charles Travis and managing principal Evan Fisher, it’s all of the above— and then some. “We’re highly customized for every single project and every single site—and that sets us apart,” says Fisher, who joined the company three years ago. “We appreciate the nuance involved when it comes to getting to know the client, what interests them and how their personality meshes with ours.” Whether staging timeless European spaces inside a country estate or re-creating history through a residence inspired by a 17th-century hacienda, Travis and Fisher celebrate uncomplicated, honest architectural styles that emphasize “less is more” when it comes to materials. The same can’t be said for the attention to detail that both men bring to the creative stage of the process—including early designs for clients in watercolors, charcoal drawings or color-pencil sketches. “Many people we work with are building their last house,” says Travis, who launched the company in 1999. “They come to the project with a lot of passion, care and resolve. They deserve our best—and we give it to them.”

Fusch Architects Internationally inspired, Robbie Fusch lets his English heritage drive his approach, resulting in architecture that borrows from the past but is well suited for the present. “We design based on what our clients want, but I always try and borrow from the elements of strong historical English architecture, creating homes that feel authentic and are well defined.” Fusch has mastered his own architectural techniques and processes, creating gorgeous outcomes that function just as well as they look. “For me, the front end of the program is the most important step in the creative process. I work with clients to establish expectations and educate them on the different architectural styles and approaches in relation to their objectives.” Hence, Fusch has created some of the most elegant homes to date—all of which are extensions of his clients in one way or another. “If my client wants a cottage-style home, that’s what they’re going to get. If they want a traditional home, then that’s what we’re going to deliver. Sometimes a client just wants a small addition; other times we’re hired to work on a complete remodel or new home. What’s great about us is that we’re affordable and offer quality service at every level.” Such has been the case since 1976, when Fusch established his own business—one that today maintains a top-notch reputation for good design, architectural excellence and an honest, ethical approach. “We’re true to our clients and their needs. Our goal is to satisfy our clients’ wants and not just fulfill, but exceed, their expectations.” Mission accomplished. James D. LaRue aRchitects When James LaRue launched his boutique architectural firm in January 1989, he vowed to give his clients the one thing he knew from first-hand experience that a larger outfit could never promise: hands-on vision and guidance from the company owner. “I worked for a firm where the client met the principal, and everything was great—until the client was tossed to the underlings,” LaRue says. “I didn’t want that for my clients. From the beginning, I’ve wanted to take every project all the way through.” To that end, LaRue handles 10 to 12 projects per year, working only in two-man crews—himself and one other member of his award-winning creative team. The resulting high-end home designs in markets from Austin and Dallas to Houston and the coastal regions of Texas have earned James D. LaRue Architects countless honors from the Home Builders Association and Texas Association of Builders. It’s also endeared LaRue to clients who continue to find a slice of residential heaven in his company’s specialty of late: the soft-contemporary aesthetic that meshes so perfectly with the rolling hills of Texas. LaRue and his team of young, free-thinking architectural professionals enhance the experience through constant communication and an array of visual aids—sketches, images, photographs and computer models. “We try and get inside the clients’ heads and teach them to understand what they’re looking at,” he says. “It’s our goal to make the process interesting, enjoyable and memorable.” James LaRue Principal 500 North Capital of Texas Highway Building 8, Suite 110 Austin, TX 78746 jdl@larue-architects.com larue-architects.com 512.347.1688

Schaumburg architectS, Pc The walls of Ken Schaumburg’s office in Fort Worth are covered with hundreds of architectural renderings, evidence not only of a lifetime spent designing luxury residential properties but of his belief that the foundation of a successful project is in the details. “We do the same computer modeling that other companies do, but my drawing skills have always been an important part of conveying the ideas and excitement to clients,” says Schaumburg, who taught architectural illustration at the University of Texas. “I think it helps to create a connection between us and the client. Nine times out of 10, my first sketch excites the client, and that’s the direction we go.” For nearly four decades, Schaumburg Architects has been charting an aesthetic course for satisfied homeowners all over the world, from Europe and Dubai to Florida and Texas. The owner’s personal travels and exposures to different architectural styles continue to impact his firm’s design, bringing a versatility and vision to projects that set Schaumburg apart. “I want the client to be excited about the prospect of living in their home, so the ‘wow’ factor is an important aspect,” says Schaumburg, whose recent projects include master planning and student housing for two Southern California colleges. “We never do boring. builder EscobEdo construction As residential architecture ventures into increasingly complex design, one question becomes essential to the creative process: What company, if any, can bring the vision to life? “That’s when our name comes up,” says David Escobedo, principal of Escobedo Construction. “I have been very fortunate that architects and clients allow me to work with them through the design process. I believe that our skill set allows them to design more freely because, regardless of the project’s complexity, they know that we can build it.” Through its signature use of finessed stone, the custom homes built by Escobedo have emerged as nothing short of architectural wonders— witness the famed Mayan House in Austin that features geometric stone patterns, mortar-free load-bearing stone and granite pieces weighing as much as 40,000 pounds. “Because of our capabilities and our state-of-the-art technology and equipment, we have the luxury of providing artistic input as well as fabricating and installing the stone, wood and steel,” says Escobedo, whose company’s building ingenuity has drawn interest from the likes of MIT and ETH Zurich. What also separates the firm is that it handles virtually every step of its construction projects with in-house staff that includes more than 70 full-time specialists. “We build it and install it ourselves,” he says. “We’re not for everyone. We’ve come to realize that. But for the sophisticated client, we’re a perfect fit.”

designer Jane Page Design grouP Much like the woman for whom the company is named, Jane Page Design Group continues to distinguish itself in and around Houston by infusing its interior projects with a life-affirming spirit of possibility. Since launching the firm in 1980, Jane-Page has brought an unparalleled attention to detail and an insatiable desire to exceed client expectations—whether working on new construction or remodeling of high-end residential properties, or planning the design of commercial projects ranging from banks to restaurants. “I don’t have a certain style,” she says. “It’s the ‘style’ requested by the client that determines the design.” That said, JPDG does bring a dynamic level of quality, efficiency and timeless sophistication to its projects. The firm’s talented and experienced team consistently expands its design horizons through trade shows and field trips, which are encouraged by the owner. “A design is not good if it’s not functional or if we don’t achieve the effect desired by the client,” says Crump, who was named one of Houston’s Most Influential Women in 2010. “I am value-oriented and, as a result, I have a lot of repeat business. The relationships that clients and I form are more than about business; it’s a friendship built on mutual trust and respect.”

My mother loved beautiful things, and she taught me about quality. Her philosophy was that if you buy something of high quality, you should never need to replace it.
I owe my firm’s success to my business education; I love all aspects of my business—the people, the creativity, balancing the desires of clients with quality and affordable costs.
My clients are educated about design; they are always challenging me with new ideas. I try to expose my clients to new products and ample information regarding use and cost.

designer Jerri Kunz Design Considering that she once earned a state championship for humorous speaking, it’s no surprise that Jerri Kunz understands the value of a light-hearted moment when dealing with clients. But that doesn’t make the owner of Jerri Kunz Design any less serious about the business of creating interior dreams. For nearly 40 years, her company has done just that with a versatility that allows it to design in styles ranging from modern and eclectic to organic and new traditional. That Kunz does it all with a smile only enhances the process for her customers. “You’re going to get something different from us,” she says. “A more pleasurable experience. In the end, you’re going to feel really good about yourself.” To that end, Kunz calls on the extensive library of products and materials for which her team is known to create simple, upbeat spaces. “Our clean edit gives the designs a modern edge—but I’m not afraid of color, found objects or old pieces,” she says. “I’m very practical, so I first address the needs and challenges that must be met. Then I get clever.” The firm works on upward of three-dozen projects at a time, including commercial spaces as well as interiors in high-end residential communities in and around the Austin area.

How do you approach interior design?
What is your communication style?
How would your clients characterize you?
I am a tactile person, someone who is inspired by the new and the untried. My library of cutting-edge options is enormous; I’m not afraid to take chances.
I listen well. The top complaint from clients about our industry is typically that they are not being heard. I take what I hear and reframe it in a clear and entertaining way.
I think my clients find me clever, witty, organized, occasionally formidable and a lot of fun. I’m interested in problem-solving and the honest expression of the individual.

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.
“It’s important that every kitchen be highly personalized, from the layout and the location of the appliances to the accessories that line each drawer.” Claudio Faria, Ornare Miami Miami, FL

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”
“I try to include a small piece of nature in all of my designs. It’s crucial to create some kind of refuge, especially in the midst of the din of city living.” Dion McCarthy, DesignARC, Inc. Los Angeles, CA

preserving the past is key—especially when the p a s t i s a 1930 s n e o - g e o r g i a n e s t a t e i n h o u s t o n b y legendary texan architect john staub — but living in it is a different story , and something that calvin and jill schlenker were not quite prepared to do .
“The bones of the home were amazing, and we were in awe of all of the details that were still in place from the original architecture,” says Jill, “but we really wanted to go in and refine it. Our main goal was to modernize it and make the living spaces about family and fun. We wanted it to feel sophisticated but not pretentious.” Luckily, though, the Schlenkers didn’t

have to look very far back into their own personal history to find just the right person for the job: Houston-based interior designer Laura Umansky had just put the finishing touches on the couple’s previous abode. “We had just completed a remodel on another home,” laughs Jill, “but it was a matter of finding the right house and the right feeling. When we saw the property, we knew it was the one. It had plenty of space for the children to play, gorgeous rows of trees and a sense of outdoor living that’s hard to find.” Umansky, however, was more concerned with what awaited her inside the stately residence. While she was smitten with the stunning parquet floors throughout, which are original to the home, she knew the dark, two-room kitchen was far from a perfect fit for her party-loving clients. “I wanted to be as true to the original layout and materials of the home as possible,

holding court The serene grounds were one of the major factors for the homeowners when deciding to hunker down in the Houston estate. “We envisioned utilizing the whole lawn space, with its English rose gardens and fountains,” says Jill. “We could imagine our whole family out there, running around.”

but I also needed to create a fresh space for the young family,” says Umansky. “As I walked through the home with Calvin and Jill for the first time, I envisioned light, elegant rooms with a bit of whimsy.” So, down came the walls in the kitchen, giving way to a large, bright space with white lacquered cabinets and an adjoining breakfast room, whose fanciful rug and purple art glass chandelier bring an unexpected pop of color to morning meals. And out went the delicate antiques that had for so long kept the house rooted in the 1930s, in favor of a look that’s decidedly more Old Hollywood glamour, as opposed to just old. To accomplish this, Umansky mixed midcentury staples with pieces that were more traditional in shape and form, opting for unusual fabrics and textures to bring the latter up to date. the formal living room, while graphic checkered floors in the pool pavilion are the perfect backdrop for bold upholstery choices. The result is a home that has all of the charm of Staub’s original design, with a healthy dose of the homeowners’ personalities injected in for good measure. “They are such a fun family,” says Umansky. “And I think we were definitely able to show that in the home.” It wasn’t all fun and games, though; John Calloway, of Houston-based Calloway Custom Builders, had his work cut out for him. The residence’s plaster walls had to be fastidiously opened up, patched and replaced to make way for the miles and miles of new electrical wiring brought in to power the flat-screen televisions and new age gadgets; the kitchen had to be completely restructured; and the handsome antique-finished

mirror tiles in the master bathroom kept cracking as they were fitted to the wall. But in the end, Calloway admits it was worth it: “Laura absolutely had a direction and a vision. She did a great job blending the old with the new, and that’s exactly what the house needed.” And he isn’t the only one enamored with the completed project (and the woman behind it). “It was beyond what I expected,” Jill explains. “Laura remembered every comment we made and every little thing was just right—from the doorknobs to the light fixtures. It was amazing to see it all come together. It’s our dream house.” L

The only
problem? The house they found in their desired area was far from what they were looking for. They bought it anyway, figuring that they would make do with a few minor alterations and move on when something more suitable turned up. They called upon architect Kevin Gallaugher and interior designer Suzi Dunn to spruce up the exterior with a coat of paint and perform a quick facelift on the master suite. “But once they saw the results, things started to mushroom,” says Gallaugher, explaining how the remodeling to-do list kept growing longer. “By the time we were finished, there wasn’t one square inch that we didn’t touch.”

The spontaneous growth of the scope of the project, though, introduced some challenges. “It was literally being designed as it was being built,” says builder Royce Flournoy. “The drawings were revised every afternoon.” The conversion of the two-story, modern industrial house into a warm and inviting, family-friendly destination started up front, where a courtyard and patio, made of Lueders limestone arranged in a custom pattern, were added. age that would allow the homeowners to extend their everyday living into the outdoors. Inside, a more open layout was created, with fewer rooms meaning greater flexibility. The master suite got a marble steam shower and wallto-wall windows that overlook the pool in the backyard. The home’s newly configured floor plan also made way for a top-of-the-line wine room and an office, as well as a second-floor studio for the girls. “Lots of homes have family rooms, but this studio is a more private play-andwork space for their daughters and their friends,” Dunn says.

The neutral color scheme of rich white and gray complements the sapele millwork and paneling. “The owners wanted a comfortable, contemporary look that had clean lines and was easy to maintain,” Dunn says. “The palette is monochromatic, so we used leather, silk and mohair to provide texture for a layered look. This is a livable house. They use every room; nothing is for show.” One of the family’s favorite spots is the dining room, where a custom table is outfitted with a built-in teppanyaki grill. “They love to entertain,” Dunn says of her clients, “and they love the idea that they can cook their daily meals right at the table.” It’s those subtle details that distinguish the house. “Nearly everything in the home is custom,” Flournoy says. “For instance, the crowning jewel of the wine room is a pair of pocket doors that meet in a perfect corner.

Like the rest of the woodwork, they’re made of sapele.” Dunn says that it’s the owners’ clear and artistic vision that made the project such a success. “The wife did her legwork and her homework,” the designer admits. “She had good taste and a fine spatial sense, and she always had a definite idea of what she wanted.” Now that the work is done, the family wouldn’t think of living anywhere else. “You can’t tell it’s the same house,” Gallaugher says. “It’s not just a remodel; it’s a complete transformation.” Adds Dunn, “They wanted a more personalized house, and that’s exactly what they ended up with.” L

it’s not unusual for architects to be asked to pencil future gardens into their blueprints; it is, however, rare that they be required to build a house around an existing one.
Happily for the owners
of this impressive estate, architect Charles Travis enjoys a good puzzle. Not only did Travis have to figure out how to construct a beautiful new house amid a flourishing garden, he also had to find someone who could remove the old one without destroying even a single delphinium.

That’s where builders Shawn Solsbery and Don Harris came in. Their approach was a simple one: They proceeded as if they were on a city project in a tight space, even though they were way out in the country. “We installed an eight-foot fence around the garden and surgically extracted the existing house,” Solsbery explains. “Then we turned around and built a bigger house in the same spot.” “Everything about the house—from its scale to the size and placement of the windows—responds to the garden,” says Travis. To ensure interior finishes and furnishings would be just as obsequious to all the floral glory outside those windows, the homeowners asked design maven Fern Santini to come on board early on. “The gardens are one of the tremendous pluses of this place,” Santini says. “So, I chose materials that would stand back a bit to let the interiors integrate into the landscape.” The owners say one of the best things about their experience was the entire team’s sensitivity to the emotions the project held for them. The sweeping property in Austin’s rolling Hill Country has been in the husband’s family for generations, and, as a young married couple,

they’d built their first home there. It served them well through their child-raising years, but then the old place’s foundation began to shift on the scrabbly shale terrain. “When we realized the house couldn’t be fixed, we had to come up with another solution, and my wife was not going to leave her garden,” laughs the man of the house of his spouse’s devotion to the lush half-acre designed by local plantsman Bill Bauer. And since, according to Travis, the landscaping embodies the spirit of a lush English country estate, the architecture was constructed to do the same. The exterior offers a classic stone façade with a deeply

being the operative word. Features like the windows underwent extraordinary scrutiny, with Solsbery and one of Chas’ project architects traveling all the way to Jamestown, New York, to spend days at Hope’s Windows to oversee their production. “They’re unbelievably large—14 feet by 14 feet in the husband’s office and even larger in the living areas—but they’re also minimal and refined,” says the builder. “We wanted to get it just right.” For her part, Santini knew exactly how to handle all of that expansive glass and the glorious competition from Mother Nature. “It was fantastic,” she says. “I could be muted and nuanced because even the subtlest texture shows up in all this natural light.” She points to the breakfast room’s

I love that.” So do the homeowners. Their deep involvement with the project and the design team’s passion for the house banished any lingering remorse they may have felt about tearing down the old family homestead. As the wife explains it, “One of the coolest things is that we had so many fun conversations with the team during the process. By the time we moved in, the house already came with good memories.” L

They settled on a 40-year-old, red brick number with
white columns in the city’s lush Westover Hills area. “We loved the neighborhood, and the house had everything we wanted—a swimming pool, a big kitchen, four bedrooms and a nice-sized playroom, plus it wouldn’t take much work to get it looking the way we wanted,” says the wife. There was only one problem: The homeowners, both in their early 30s, have much more contemporary tastes than their Georgian-inspired abode suggested.

To give it a modern edge, they sought the help of designer James McInroe, whose team included Marcia Curtis-Hornsby and Katie Whitis, as well as contractor Matthew Adams. The homeowners were fans of McInroe’s edgy color schemes and sleek midcentury modern look and had previously purchased furniture from his showroom for their former residence. “I really wanted the house to feel like James’ style. Basically, we let him do a complete turnkey job,” says the wife. The challenge was to make the house’s traditional styling feel more contemporary while retaining its overall classic feel. Outside, McInroe painted the columns and brick a sophisticated shade of taupe and installed a larger, Regency-inspired front door with glass panes and steel mullions for a dash of glamour. A few other minor reconstructive changes were also made—the bathrooms were updated and a smoked

pure geometry In the study, a sunny yellow and gray print by Designers Guild and a Curtis Jere sculpture carry out a bold, geometric theme. The walnut and leather bench and custom chair, in white hair-on-hide from Edelman Leather and Phillip Jeffries raffia, are from McInroe’s stock.
For those who recognize McInroe for his use of saturated hues, his decision to use varying shades of gray on the walls, paneling, woodwork and mantels throughout the house might seem uncharacteristically reserved. “I wanted something neutral to dignify the bones of the architecture,” he explains. Instead, his signature love of color makes an appearance in the furniture and accessories in a stunning array of orange, gold, brown, black, white, and the occasional chartreuse pillow. The family spends most of its time in the great room and kitchen, which are open to one another. “The great room really sold us on the house,” says the wife. “We love to entertain, and I wanted the room to be fun. James designed the bar and game area on a cocktail napkin in one afternoon.” Because of the room’s large size, McInroe created a framework of seating areas that are formally balanced with pairs of sofas, chairs and tables. “It’s such a large space that without structure, you’d get lost in the room,” he says.

The table boasts a custom olive ash burl top on a vintage base; the rattan chairs were re-covered in Duralee fabric.

With the kitchen in full view of the main living areas, it needed to seamlessly tie in. “We wanted it to look more dignified and less kitchen-y,” says McInroe, who painted the cabinets gray and replaced the granite backsplashes with stainless steel. The whole renovation project only took four months from start to finish. “We came in on budget and under deadline,” says the wife. “I tend to be much more in control, but I was happy to get out of my box on this one.” The husband, who had not seen the house since the day they bought it, came in after everything was put together for a dramatic unveiling. The verdict? Says the wife: “He loved it!” L

PRINCESS DIARIES
Gifted to Princess Margaret by English aristocrat Colin Tennant, Les Jolies Eaux is a neo-Georgian five-bedroom estate overlooking the southern tip of the island. The style is British Colonial, with casually chic furnishings and antiques. With French doors throughout, it’s best to keep them flung open to capture royal views.

JUNGLE FEVER
Yemanjá is seven sprawling acres of tropical splendor with two boulderfringed pools surrounded by lush foliage. The warm, inviting interiors are inspired by Brazil and Africa. At the heart of the expansive estate is an opulent thatch-roofed palapa, with sweeping views and snug spots for reading or an apt afternoon nap.

ASIAN FLAIR
Perched 300 feet above the sea is the Japanese-style Shogun villa. Five pavilion-like guest suites are assembled around a central koi pond and lush tropical gardens abound. Interiors are Asian-hip with dark woods and Balinese styling. A nine-hole golf course on site isn’t bad either.

The theatrical Toucan Hill is an opulent island fantasy. Moorish architecture with colonnades rendered in indigo blue and white, jewel-toned lanterns, and Saharan gold-colored interior walls add to the glamour. Virtually 360-degree ocean views can be seen from the property's many hilltop perches.

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. lent textures. Much like his runway creations, it’s the well-articulated details—silver leaf, crystal accents, a two-tone palette that was implemented to mimic the appearance of a black and white photograph—that define Toi’s work. When asked what the fashion equivalent is to his home, Toi says, “I see it as a glamorous black and white gown with silver beading, worn by a modern-day Marie Antoinette.” houseoftoi.com

parisian persuasion Enamored with French styles, fashion designer Zang Toi transformed an early-20th-century New York City apartment into his personal Parisian-inspired retreat. Posh accents in the sitting room, such as a custom silver-fox rug, antique Baccarat chandelier and portraits of Marie Antoinette by artist Natasha Zupan, pop against high-gloss white walls. COLOR THEORY THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND REBEL-CHIC FASHION HOUSE LIBERTINE HAS A HIDDEN AFFINITY FOR INTERIORS, MADE EVIDENT IN THE MODERN TRANSFORMATION OF HIS RUSTIC LOS ANGELES BUNGALOW.
REFASHIONED APPROACH Fans of Johnson Hartig’s lauded eco-friendly fashion label Libertine revel in his ability to turn tired vintage clothing into couture ensembles. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says. Such was his method when he set out to design A solid piece of wood forms the band for this unique cuff, complete with a 14-karat gold accent with spinel and white coral charms. 14K YG Spinel & Coral Cuff, $6,950; devillefinejewelry.com
his Los Angeles home, incorporating a mix of vintage and modern pieces, vibrant Damien Hirst paintings and graphic black and white fabrics. Rules rarely apply to the self-taught designer, who often finds inspiration in the unexpected and pays little attention to trends, which explains, Hartig says, why the evolution of his interiors is as constant as his couture collections. “My home, like Libertine, is always a work in progress.” ilovelibertine.com

Sneak Peek: I’m in a ’70s mood for spring 2012. It’s an era that made a big impression on me, even as a kid decorating my bedroom.
Interior Insight: I like to make sure every room has one great antique piece as an anchor, and then I work from there.

Johnson Hartig’s fall collection for Libertine is reminiscent of works of art, specifically, he says, “post-World War German expressionistic prints. We took a small area and blew it up to get the look we were going for.” 260 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

STAYING POWER FROM THE EARLY CREATION OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG’S ICONIC WRAP DRESS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF HER ANTICIPATED LINE OF HOME DÉCOR, IT SEEMS THERE’S NOTHING THE RESPECTED STYLE ARBITER CAN’T TACKLE.
BRANCHING OUT It’s little known that Diane von Furstenberg’s passion for interior design stretches as far back as the 1980s, when, while lovers of the DVF brand were admiring her revival of figure-flattering dresses, she released a series of books on home décor. “I love the balance between color, texture, pattern and proportion that can exist in both fashion and the home,” she says. Often acclaimed Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi crafted this ornate ring with 24-karat gold, white, yellow and cognac diamonds and pink tourmaline cabochons. R3028, $9,887; barneys.com
for her liberal use of pattern and color, it seemed a natural transition for von Furstenberg to later debut lines of homeware and textiles. Most recently, von Furstenberg channeled her expert sense of interior design in a series of suites for the venerable Claridge’s hotel in London. “My aim was to respect the legendary glamour of the hotel, while incorporating pieces that beautifully illustrate my passion for pattern, texture and travel.” dvf.com

Design Tip: Have fun with textures, large prints, florals and stripes in ways that make you feel beautiful, but comfortable.
Philosophy: I design clothes that I love and that I think women will feel beautiful wearing. The same applies to my home products.

Sharif & Munir offers an empty-nester vision for today’s baby boomers.
W
We are talking with more and more couples and individuals who want a new home that reflects their current lifestyle. These people are not wanting a zero lot line or high rise condo, but are primarily seeking a single family home that sheds unused space. They don’t necessarily want smaller rooms, just fewer rooms beautifully designed for function and efficiency.

The home featured here is an excellent example of this new forward thinking. This home has very little wasted hallway space, with an open living environment, and rooms that retain the feel of a much larger home. This is one of many floor plan concepts Sharif & Munir is looking forward to visiting with you about should this be the lifestyle you are seeking. We have thirty three years of experience delivering an outstanding homebuilding experience to our homeowners, and would welcome the opportunity to see if we can help you with your new home. For those interested in exploring this in greater detail, call 972788-1234. Please ask about our full color brochure and informative corporate DVD.
