And they shall call me:

Caroline, Queen of the Kitchen

Caroline Kremler was not always the bouyant baker you see before you. Time was, her flowery (and flour-y) fantasy — complete with the cherubic, chocolate-smeared smiles of her children — was merely “pie in the sky”. But then she spoke with us. And we listened (a lost art, we’re told). And together, we arrived at Caroline’s Pastry-based Paradise. You might even say getting there was… well, a piece of cake.

Kitchen. Bath. Outdoor. Joy.

community relations. As we assembled this issue, viewing hundreds of images and selecting which furnishings, textiles and accessories to cover, I considered our remarkable design community, which we are fortunate to report on in the pages of this magazine. The scope of talent, craftsmanship, ideas and influence—from architects and builders, to decorators, manufacturers and showrooms—is pretty astonishing and exceedingly inspiring. We shine a spotlight on these creative forces in the community, and discover what turns them on when it comes to design and lifestyle in our new Insider department. Check it out, and then expand beyond our pages by heading to luxedaily.com where we cover the design community at large.

Clockwise from top left: P.E. Guerin: I toured this foundry and was blown away by the handcrafted workmanship and attention to detail. Schumacher: When I previewed Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s new collection for Schumacher…well, let’s just say my head is still swimming with notions of how I’d decorate with this cut velvet gem. Neil Denari: Architect Neil Denari’s influence reaches sky high, particularly in West Chelsea where his firm’s HL23 condo is firmly planted. Hutton Wilkinson: What’s more impressive: The stellar art direction of Hutton Wilkinson’s latest tome, or the jewelry itself? You decide, because I still can’t!

SHOW TIME I am very excited to attend the Maison de Luxe Show House at the Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills this December. There will be a ton of talent from across the country designing rooms in the iconic estate. Amazing design and it’s for a good cause: raising funds for The Friends of Greystone. maisondeluxeatgreystone.com

STYLE FILE Similar to my design style, my fashion taste runs wide. I like to mix it up and stay current. Some days I’m modern with a bohemian twist, other days I can go classic city or even beach chic. No matter the look, my wardrobe is always completed with unique jewelry and topped off with a great pair of heels! Currently, I’m loving OC local Gina Van Ocker’s jewelry. 949.244.8831

PARK IT Although a recent trip to Manhattan has me enamored of historical architecture, embellished stone and glass skyscrapers, Southern California’s skyline is better known for its expansive earth-hugging design and landscape. My all-time favorite place is Heisler Park; it’s a real hidden gem. Just blocks from my home, I start my days there with early morning workouts at Rock Pile Beach. It’s as if I’ve been transported to a Hawaiian oasis. The meandering paths, park areas and crashing surf are fabulous. Go to watch the sunset. lagunabeachinfo.com 4

ODDS AND ENDS Areo Home on Ocean Avenue in Laguna Beach is one of my favorite local shops. For years, it has been my go-to for gifts, books, frames, candles and objets d’art for clients. They carry items from HomArt, imports from Asia and tons of unusual pieces that have an ethnic flair. Ask for the manager, Ashley Washburn, who is terrific. And, if you do pick up a gift, have it wrapped with their signature brown paper and wax seal. areohome.com

RUSSELLSHUBIN INDUSTRIAL CHIC I love stopping at Cleveland Art, which is located in a great and gritty warehouse downtown. The shop specializes in repurposing industrial objects and surplus as functional furniture and design pieces. There’s nothing quite like Jason Wein’s custom handblown glass lighting. I’ve ordered several anamorphic glass shapes for custom lights and trays. Ask for Ace Misiunas. She is very knowledgeable about every object in their warehouse. clevelandart.com 2

master plan. ARCHITECT RUSSELL SHUBIN SHARES HIS TAKE ON AMAZING HANDBLOWN GLASS LIGHTING, CONTEMPLATIVE ART EXHIBITS AND GETAWAYS WHERE YOU CAN REALLY CHILL OUT.

ART SCENE I’ve been frequenting the Geffen Contemporary Museum in Little Tokyo since the 1980s. The permanent collection is amazing, but I go for the temporary exhibits, which always leave me in a contemplative state. The building is an old warehouse renovated by Frank Gehry in the ’80s; he left much of the original structure and integrity of the warehouse intact. The large scale of the interior is the perfect backdrop for the eclectic range of installations. Make a day of it and cap it off with a bit of sake and sushi in Little Tokyo. moca.org 3

THE GREAT ESCAPE The Montage in Laguna Beach is one of my favorite escapes. It’s akin to going to a spa where the focus is to refuel and accomplish nothing. My wife and I also like the fact that downtown Laguna is filled with restaurants and shops that we can just slide in and out of with no agenda. One of our favorite stores is Kerry Cassill; I personally like the beach vibe fabric designs for bedding. montagelagunabeach.com 4

NATURAL SURROUNDINGS The Getty Villa is one of the best destinations to experience the outdoors and connect with nature. It’s walking distance from my home in Sunset Mesa, but feels like somewhere on the Amalfi Coast. The exterior grounds have a number of well-manicured courtyards and gardens offering stunning vistas of the ocean. Head there mid-morning and enjoy breakfast on the deck. getty.edu

ASIAN INFLUENCE I love mixing antiques—especially Oriental items—in with my current design projects to pay homage to the wonderful designers and artists from the past. In San Diego, Genghis Khan is a treasure trove of Asian antique furnishings, including altar tables, chests and cabinets. Their abundant array of accessories, such as stone and woodcarvings, garden elements, vintage fabrics and architectural ornaments, are hard to resist! gkfurniture.com 2

FRENCH LESSONS Since discovering Bleu Bohème in Kensington, I find myself thinking of it time and again. Chef Ken Irvine’s creation is a nod to France’s past generations mixing the free-spirited Left Bank of Paris with the tradition of rural areas. It is laid-back and has the perfect menu with a charcuterie platter that's hard to beat. Pair it with a great Sauvignon Blanc and good company, and you're all set. bleuboheme.com

DOING THE DEL I live in Coronado, which is a destination itself, and when I am home I love escaping to the Hotel del Coronado. The minute my feet hit the sand, my heart slows down a few beats and I know I am at the “Del.” Most mornings when the tide is low, I run on the beach that fronts the hotel. Often, dolphins can be seen just off the shore. Then, it’s coffee or breakfast at the Duchess Cottage. It’s easy to escape when you have paradise in your own backyard! hoteldel.com 4

HISTORICAL REFERENCE For such a young city, San Diego has some wonderful architectural history. I have been a fan of architect Irving Gill—a local icon—for many years, and there are still some good examples of his work in existence, including The Bishop’s School in La Jolla. I always appreciate seeing the attention to detail the pre-WWII designers and architects took in building the old San Diego neighborhoods. sandiegohistory.org

One thing in particular has remained since Hutton Wilkinson took over the late Tony Duquette's legacy: the jewelry is still fearless, as evidenced in Wilkinson’s new book Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry, due out this November. The lavish, unapologetic designs can be seen in all their extravagant glory in the gorgeous pages of Wilkinson’s third book. “Tony always said that the difference between animals and humans is adornment,” says the charismatic designer. “We each have to eat and procreate to survive, but how we choose to clothe ourselves is the true difference. That’s magic.” Magic, indeed. Organized by color and material, Wilkinson’s latest oeuvre showcases the captivating explosion of gems—all one-of-a-kind pieces—that is synonymous with the Tony Duquette brand. “This book was written to inspire individuality and creativity in others,” says Wilkinson. “It’s for anyone who aspires to pretty things.” abramsbooks.com

MUSEUM QUALITY When an artist is revered as one of the most significant painters of his time, there’s only one natural course of action: build a comprehensive museum dedicated to preserving his legacy. On November 18, the Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver within a cantilevered structure designed by Allied Works Architecture, shedding natural and metaphorical light on an oeuvre that has largely never before been on public display. clyffordstillmuseum.org

The 14-story structure houses 11 full-floor residences—including two duplexes—with sweeping views of the High Line park, thanks to floor-to-ceiling, low-iron windows. The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Mustique is most definitely a destination where dreams are built (both metaphorically and architecturally). DECORATIVE HARDWARE

Martin Grubman, P.E. Guerin

Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

From historical reproductions to whimsical Flights oF Fancy, Fine decorative hardware Firm p.e. guerin FaithFully creates its handcraFted masterpieces just as its Founder did beFore the turn oF the last century.

bespoke

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.

WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.

HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.

DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto blended sleek, contemporary lines with tongue-in-cheek ingenuity when concepting his classic Paimio chair. Deftly pushing the limits of tightly bent birch plywood, Aalto formed a sinuous frame and seat with an appealingly structural personality. Inspired by Marcel Breuer’s iconic Wassily Chair, the Paimio is deliberately crafted using native birch, which underscores its organic form.

Designers Michael Partenio and Stacy Kunstel were inspired by an antique candelabra that sent them on a quest to inject old-fashioned romance back into today’s interiors. By modernizing the shape, adjusting the height and adding a lacquer-like finish, their fresh-feeling take allows for a luminous glow to settle over its onlookers. Handmade exclusively in the United States and composed of North American maplewood, the candelabra is available in a variety of hues.

For designer Eduardo Garza, there’s more to art than simply fashioning together creative ideas: Only after ethically sourcing and personally selecting all the materials that encompass each one of his pieces does the design process begin. Precious metals, stones and other natural elements of the highest quality are then manipulated into striking objet d’arts, such as this vibrant amethyst accented in white gold leaf and cradled by a gilt base.

“Simply put, our work is classic with a twist,” says Michael Ostrow, right, who, along with partner Roger Stoker, left, helms Grace Home Furnishings. Opposite: Philip Johnson’s iconic Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. Stoker wouldn’t mind taking up residence.

It’s fitting that Michael Ostrow and Roger Stoker of Grace Home Furnishings met over the sale of a table, some 16 years ago. Michael was manning the shop; Roger was buying. MICHAEL OSTROW & ROGER STOKER How did you become interested in design? RS: Like Lady Gaga says, I was “born this way.” I believe I’ve always had an innate sense of design.

What’s inspiring you now? MO: Some of the pieces that I’ve designed for the Grace Home Collection are inspired by our vacations away; others by vintage pieces from our own home. At the moment I have a thing for grass-cloth wallpapers.

Greatest influences: RS: Frank Lloyd Wright was a great influence from my childhood. I also think that the works of David Adler and Frances Elkins, brother and sister, were fantastic collaborations of architecture and interior design.

“There weren’t many jobs for young female artists after I graduated from college,” recalls artist Pamela Grau. “It took years of personal digging to find my authentic voice.” Opposite: Trove in Laguna Beach. Grau, who is also a published cookbook author, goes for the great home goods.

“My work has an element of surprise, and I sometimes make mistakes that take me in other directions,” says Newport Beach artist Pamela Grau. “I often go about things all wrong, but they turn out right just as often.” Like the

time she spent five months making 40 handcast porcelain doll-like figures for an installation. When she pit fired them overnight on the beach, some crumbled and broke. Most people would have seen the ruin, but Grau found the ruined beautiful. “I reassembled some and left others in their broken form,” she cheerfully recalls. Grau, a child of the 1950s, decided at age 7 that she would be Picasso. “I wanted to be the artist—not one of his wives or girlfriends,” she says. A traditionally trained painter, she now uses the medium unconventionally, coating her textural pieces—made of plaster, cast resin, insulation foam and even socks, plastic dolls and tennis nets—with layers of paint so they suggest metal. “My life is reflected loudly in my work,” says Grau. “I paint billboards about what I feel.” pamelagrau.com

Pamela Grau Design icon: After seeing the Alexander McQueen retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, I am inspired by and in awe of his use of color and texture, and his manipulation of materials.

What do you collect? Contemporary art, some of it my colleagues’ and friends’ work. I have pieces by Sueo Serisawa, Danica Ristow, Jeff Koegel, YaYa Chou, Guy White, Connie Sasso, Winifred Johnson Brewer and Bob Crewe.

Favorite decorating sources: Trove in Laguna Beach for its incredible curation of home goods and ABC Carpet & Home in New York for its colorful handwoven carpets.

Recent project: I just finished Tangled, a piece at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art. It’s organically textural and quirky.

Dream collaboration: An architectural project that allows me to utilize my work in a large public space. I’d want an open budget, the use of a foundry and a structural engineer on call. luxe interiors

“My creative outlet is also my career,” says landscape designer Ryan Prange. “I love that I can get up each day and do something different.” Opposite: A Koi pond and custombuilt bench surround a stucco-covered fire pit in this Encinitas backyard, designed and installed by Prange.

Named for Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Fallingwater home, Falling Waters Landscape—the award-winning brainchild of founding principal and lead designer Ryan Prange—unites space, form and function with simple landscapes rich in alluring angles, textures and architectural movement. Using conventional materials like variegated foliage, boulders, wispy grasses and vertical plants, which Prange famously repeats and echoes throughout each

project, the designer creates a harmony that’s unconventional yet approachable. “I’m bent toward a modern and efficient aesthetic,” he admits. “If possible, I’d like everything to serve multiple purposes.” And while respecting the originality of each landscape is paramount, it’s the union of natural resources within a space’s existing architecture that sets the tone of his work. Focusing on continuity and the interplay between masculine and feminine, Prange aims to achieve a cohesiveness that’s both purposeful and unique. “The goal,” he says, “is to draw the eye away from the structure and create a destination all its own.” fallingwaterslandscape.com; 619.955.5595

Ryan PRange Greatest influences: Landscape architects Michael Schneider, Andrea Cochran and Pamela Burton, landscape designer Flora Grubb and architect Ron Radziner.

Exciting trend: Gabion walls. They’ve been used for centuries to mitigate runoffs on slopes, fortify walls and protect military bases. They’re fantastic looking and I’m anxious to find a use for them in one of our projects.

Architecture period you find most engaging: 1920s and 1930s Craftsman. The homes in the South Park neighborhood in San Diego are my favorite because I love how they’re the antithesis of Victorian.

Dream dinner party guests: Adam Carolla, Anthony Bourdain, filmmaker Ken Burns, Julius Shulman, Rafael Nadal and radio host Ira Glass.

My work is… Simple, regional, calming and appropriate. I’ve called it “San Diego Simple” before.

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

“It’s important that every kitchen be highly personalized, from the layout and the location of the appliances to the accessories that line each drawer.” Claudio Faria, Ornare Miami Miami, FL

Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

“I try to include a small piece of nature in all of my designs. It’s crucial to create some kind of refuge, especially in the midst of the din of city living.” Dion McCarthy, DesignARC, Inc. Los Angeles, CA

builder Nicholas Builders, iNc. With a family background of artisans, and a childhood passion for illustration and carpentry, Nicholas Reich began working at age 15. In just two years, he became the art director of the architectural glass firm for which he worked, but was sidetracked by the heavier construction portions of the projects. “Making large projects appear simple has always appealed to me,” Reich says. His skills on massive framing projects became well known, allowing him to build high-profile projects, from the Department of Motor Vehicles’ building in Alexandria, Virginia, to historical restoration projects in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1996, Reich returned to his home state of California. “After working abroad and soaking in multiple regional and technical building styles, I decided to bring the knowledge home to where I could stand the year-round weather.” He established his first woodworking studio in Modjeska Canyon. A year and a half later, Nicholas & Co. Woodworking and Design opened its doors. In response to a high demand for construction and full-scale interior projects, Nicholas Builders, Inc. was formed, allowing the two companies to work side-by-side and make strong connections with a vast network of related trades. Reich still produces traditional pencil sketches for various parts of his designs. “With Autocad and other technologies, you just can’t get the same feel for certain architectural features as you can with illustrated renderings done by the hand of a true artist.”

“in love, as in gluttony,” said the writer italo calvino wryly,

“pleasure is a matter of precision.”

Had he been alive to witness the erecting of this Los Angeles-area estate, he might have added architecture and design to the list. “At a glance it looks like a simple design,” observes Marc Welch, project architect for the Landry Design Group, which designed the buildings. “But the attention to detail that went into it to make everything line up perfectly is of the highest quality.”

The home alternates stucco-clad block forms with pitched roof-topped glass spaces—basically “a rhythm of solid and void relationships,” Welch explains. Another major conceptual element punctuating the structures is “a modern interpretation of remnants of old stone walls,” much like those one passes through in ancient cities, where fragments of ramparts are poignant reminders of the structures that once encircled them. These impart a mysterious, timeless quality to the setting. The clients, says the firm’s principal Richard Landry, are a couple with homes all over the world. “Here, they wanted a very transparent, open floor plan that took advantage of the California weather,” he adds. That’s one reason the home is long and not terribly deep from front to back; rear-facing rooms open completely to the outdoors, providing

natural ventilation. The other? To take advantage of spectacular Santa Monica Mountains and LA Basin views. The exactitude of detail is breathtaking. The home is so pristine that floor levels could not vary more than one-quarter inch throughout. Interior designer James Magni even prevailed upon CaesarStone— manufacturer of the monumental slabs of quartz surfacing that run underfoot—to minimize grout lines, an entirely new installation technique for that company. vertical interior and exterior accents was hand-chiseled by more than 100 workmen in China to appear “raked,” says builder John Finton. “It was incredibly complicated and would have been economically impossible in Europe,” he concedes. Ditto with miles of tempered glass banisters, the compound radii of which were so hard to achieve that they kept breaking during the firing process. “The freestanding main staircase, which is clad in CaesarStone with a steel substructure,” adds Finton, “was one of the more difficult staircases we’ve ever built.”

Magni and his senior designer, Christina Craemer, also forged an exacting precision of their own to conjure interior spaces meticulously tailored to their clients’ needs and desires. Part of this involved helping these avid collectors connect with local artists to assemble specially commissioned works for the home. “She went to all their studios and met with them for hours,” says Magni of the wife. This resulted in a highly personal collection. To wit: The 15-foot-long painting in the dining room, observes Craemer, is inspired by drifting dunes because the homeowners were raised in a desert climate. Though they love the casual California lifestyle, explains Craemer, the clients are very fashionable and “used to more formally designed spaces. So the interior is more high-style than what people think of as California design.” In contrast to the 1950s case study aesthetic of many LA-area residences, the living room here is a richly textured space,

filled with plush leathers, hides and high-polish woods. “You can’t get any more custom,” says Craemer. “Nothing here is off the shelf.” The all-white dining room has to host intimate lunches as well as large receptions. So the designers adapted Magni’s Jewel table dining surface that pulls apart or together as needed. It’s that kind of immaculate, impeccable precision that defines the house. No gluttony here, though there certainly is love (specifically for rigorous design). And of course, there are plenty of pleasures, too. L

The former CEO of an apparel company, he’d only lived in more traditional homes but was a fan of contemporary—on his terms: “No chrome, no glass, no white.” Calling upon Sheldon Harte, a designer the homeowner had known for a number of years, the two devised a plan based on a palette of gray and taupe. It would not only complement the panoramic views of the water beyond the sliding glass doors that stretch across the ocean-facing side of the house, but it would also provide a muted backdrop to the client’s elegant furniture and colorful collection of contemporary art.

But first, the two had to address some of the cut corners still lingering from when the single-level hilltop house was built 15 years ago. While the bones were great and the layout was fine—with a master suite on one end, two guest rooms on the other and open living and dining areas in between—the finishes needed upgrading. “We redid all the door hardware; we reconfigured the kitchen cabinets and the lighting and the backsplash; we reskimmed the walls; and we drew up new fire surrounds,” says Harte, who covered the concrete

The furniture, what Harte describes as “a harmonious, interesting array of pieces that work on their own as well as together,” avoids the matchymatchy set and instead features pairings like a burl-veneer oval low table supporting antique rock-crystal candlesticks; silk-velvet throw pillows on the sofa near a bronze floor lamp; and, between two walnut-base chairs, a square selenite side table that glows with interior lighting. Opposite the living room, on the inland side of the house, the family room reflects the palette in a more casual continuation: a cozy leather chair, an overstuffed sofa and high-backed armchairs. Sliding glass doors, like those in the living room, open up to a deck with outdoor furnishings; the wraparound area can accommodate about 20 people for drinks and dinner. Throughout the house, and especially in the living areas where rooms flow unto the next, Harte relied on color blocking to delineate space. The homeowner admits he has a difficult time picking a favorite spot, but says he spends a lot of time in the family room, which boasts a great piece of art and looks through to the kitchen and the front of the house. “Wherever I am,” he says, “those views are my favorite.” And though it was a turnkey project, “literally down to the towels,” he notes, “this house, without exception, for what it conveys—taste, sophistication, art, lighting—it’s more me than anything I’ve ever had. It feels very much like my home.” L

it took a good two years for her to find the early 1920s-era home on three-quarters of an acre in the city’s historic Hancock Park, much better suited to raising a family than the Savagians’ former Brentwood house with its tiny, child-unfriendly yard. Jennifer Davis, the designer who worked with Savagian on much of the new home’s interior, credits Amy’s mother, also a client, with influencing her embrace of classic style and “desire for the traditional, formal, elegant bones and structure of the house,” says Davis. “At the same

entertainment center Designer Jennifer Davis tailored the formal living room for family life and entertaining with comfortable seating, including matching loveseats custom-upholstered in DÊcor de Paris’ linen velvet. time, it needed to be relaxed enough for a young and growing family, one that people can live in and walk in and sit on sofas in. We really wanted a mix of antiques as well as reproductions, because they’re built for today’s lifestyle.” In the living room, for example, Davis selected an Italian settee from Dennis & Leen that incorporates the classic lines of a turn-of-thecentury piece with the comfort of a larger-scale reproduction, designed to accommodate modern-day bodies. traditional wing chair with cleaner but still understated lines. Davis also freshened the light-filled living room with pale, neutral hues and a sisal rug from Decorative Carpets. “I wanted to be authentic to the house, and to the client’s directive of having a traditional feel, but I also wanted it to feel young and fresh,” she says. Of course, what exactly is authentic to the house is something of a mystery, since it has undergone several remodels over the years. When the Savagians discovered the home, “it looked like a pseudo-Mediterranean tract house,” says builder-designer Brian Little, who helped the family gut the house, replace antiquated electrical and plumbing systems, and rebuild with a new façade, molding, pool and guesthouse, and a tweaked floor plan. One such tweak involved carving a spacious master bedroom luxe interiors

closet out of the attic. Savagian, an internal medicine resident married to an investment banker, says the addition was occasioned by a visit to a friend’s remodel. “I had three times as many clothes and she had a larger closet,” she says. “Really, the only place to go was up.” The home’s transformation from a California casa to a villa easily suited to the south of France was inspired by the pitch of the roof. “It seemed French in nature, so a simple French manor was born of that,” Little says. The façade was cloaked in understated gray with a roof crafted from three coordinating shades of slate. The formal front garden is planted with the quintessentially European silhouettes of topiary and cypress and olive trees.

ranging in age from 2 to 9, the outdoors are as important as the indoors. So Little designed a backyard with rolling lawns and a pool large enough for the kids to swim laps. Inspired by the Beverly Hills Hotel, he also designed a sophisticated poolside cabana/outdoor living room, where one can watch TV shielded from the rays of the sun. All of the elegant spaces are part of the Savagians’ long-term plan; they have no intention of leaving the home anytime soon. “We wanted to create a big central lawn where, eventually, their kids can get married,” says Little. a simple garden, a plain white stucco wall, a wooden door.

At first glance, the house at the end of a quiet

cul de sac in La Jolla doesn’t command much attention; its street view presents a kind of architectural poker face. And while architect Tony Crisafi hails this subtlety as one of the home’s most distinguishing features (“The owners are from Mexico City and prefer the anonymity that comes with living ‘behind the garden wall,’” he explains), he also revels in the way the design unveils every inch of itself, one surprise at a time. “It’s not like a bottle of cheap Champagne that fizzles out as soon as you pop it open,” muses Crisafi. Pivoting open the tzalam wood entry door—a gorgeous custom-designed sculpture in its own right, featuring a lattice of hand-carved inlaid squares—doesn’t reveal a traditional foyer, but rather a courtyard accentuated by a reflecting pool. This serene space, enclosed on two sides by glass and topped with a ceiling of sky, is the architecture’s first indooroutdoor gesture. Throughout the sprawling footprint, disappearing walls—of both the glass and pocket-door variety—aren’t simply generous portals through which Southern California’s warm sunlight and fresh ocean air infuse the home. They’re also the apertures that capture views of the pool, garden, distant beach or even other rooms in the house, well-appointed with the homeowners’ vast collection of modern art.

animal kingdom The living room’s location at the back of the house puts it front row center for pool and ocean views. With neutral upholstery on the generous Bolier & Company sofas and a zebra-hide print on the chrome Kravet chairs, this room feels like an après-safari retreat.

firewater When lit at night, the massive gold travertine slab that acts as a backdrop for the entry fountain provides the water with a fiery reflection. The open-air courtyard hints at what’s to come, from the home’s indooroutdoor mission to an actual sneak peek inside via glass walls and doors.

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 233

Crisafi incorporated “shifting planes” into the design that provide thrilling elements of surprise—just when the edge of the home is in sight, there’s another level below with more to offer. “In this way, the home unfolds like a good story,” he says. While the living room, for instance, extends its footprint to include an outdoor reflecting pool on the rear terrace, a few steps toward the edge discloses another chapter, another surprise, another tier: a swimming pool. On yet another tier below that lies a garden. And underneath the massive, all-concrete

podium deck that holds it all, an additional unforeseen wonder reveals itself: a cavernous nine-car garage, with nary a supporting vertical post or I-beam in sight. “The entire house sits on it. It spans from front to back,” explains builder Dan Arenas. “It was easily one of my greatest challenges.” Working with Diarq Diseño y Arquitectura owner Gina Diez Barroso, lead designer Hilda Espino worked her own surprises into the mix. Rather than countering the boxy, minimalist architecture with, say, overtly curvaceous furniture and lots of soft textures, Espino embraced the right angles and sleek surfaces. Linear layouts appear in the living room, where the furniture is centered for coziness rather than banished to the outskirts, and in the dining room, where a generous custom square table can host dinner for a dozen.

square dance Looming above the parchment-topped dining table is a masterpiece rendered in white onyx: a light fixture that’s rectilinear in shape and texture, much like the architecture of the house. Both pieces are custom. The brick red leather chairs are from Antonello Italia; the carpet underneath is from Aja Rugs.

picture in picture Given the home’s boxy shapes, many of the pass-throughs inadvertently frame pictureperfect design vignettes that include the homeowners’ collection of modern art by Mexican artists. This particular view of the family room is seen from the glass entry doors.

black tie affair An L-shaped sofa by Italian Homes and classic Barcelona chairs anchor the family room. The stools and end table are from Hold It Contemporary Home; the Natuzzi coffee table was found at Designet in Mexico City. Snaidero cabinetry and hardware elevate the kitchen’s contemporary aesthetic.

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 236

Black leather seating in the family room is decidedly modern, and an abstract painting in primary colors by Loli, a popular, mono-monikered Mexican artist, heightens the vibe, as do the stainless-steel appliances and barstools in the adjacent kitchen. Yet, somehow, in the presence of all these contemporary attributes, warmth prevails. “The family room is large in scale, but cozy,” says Espino. “It’s open to the pool terrace and the kitchen, which helps a lot,” because, after all, nothing enlivens a space more than a flurry of activity. The woodand-leather custom drop ceiling, also designed to echo the home’s orthogonal expression, creates even more intimacy.

touch therapy The gray color palette in the master suite is enlivened by a variety of materials (custom wood dresser and lacquer platform bed, leather chaise by Zuo, and silky quilted bedding and Mongolian lambskin pillows from West Elm) and the surrounding outdoor environment, framed by large pocket-door openings.

winding road The helical staircase is virtually the only piece of architecture in the house that curves. The glass railings seem to aid the hefty sculpture in its effortless spiral, which spans all three floors. The tall glass enclosure looks onto a planted bamboo screen, connecting outdoor and indoor environments.

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 239

At the center of it all stands one significant sculptural piece that Espino and Crisafi describe, respectively, as “the heart of the home” and “the binding of the book”: an elegant staircase that seems to float between all three floors. At once understated and grand, it’s the only geometry in the house that swerves. When placed in the context of architecture that exhibits all the trademarks of cool minimalism, it’s the biggest surprise of all. L

PRINCESS DIARIES

Gifted to Princess Margaret by English aristocrat Colin Tennant, Les Jolies Eaux is a neo-Georgian five-bedroom estate overlooking the southern tip of the island. The style is British Colonial, with casually chic furnishings and antiques. With French doors throughout, it’s best to keep them flung open to capture royal views.

These oversize sunglasses feature a multi-tone design reminiscent of the 1970s. Anemone, $640; louisvuitton.com

JUNGLE FEVER

Yemanjá is seven sprawling acres of tropical splendor with two boulderfringed pools surrounded by lush foliage. The warm, inviting interiors are inspired by Brazil and Africa. At the heart of the expansive estate is an opulent thatch-roofed palapa, with sweeping views and snug spots for reading or an apt afternoon nap.

Traditional materials meet fresh design with Custom Cool’s ikat rug. Ikat (Blue), price available upon request; customcoolrugs.com

ASIAN FLAIR

Perched 300 feet above the sea is the Japanese-style Shogun villa. Five pavilion-like guest suites are assembled around a central koi pond and lush tropical gardens abound. Interiors are Asian-hip with dark woods and Balinese styling. A nine-hole golf course on site isn’t bad either.

7: The natural beauty of Sheherezade; 8: Stairway to heaven at Toucan Hill; 9: The slip-covered chic life at Mimosa.

FANTASY ISLAND

The theatrical Toucan Hill is an opulent island fantasy. Moorish architecture with colonnades rendered in indigo blue and white, jewel-toned lanterns, and Saharan gold-colored interior walls add to the glamour. Virtually 360-degree ocean views can be seen from the property's many hilltop perches.

ROYAL TREATMENT Malaysian-born fashion designer Zang Toi is a household naMe aMong red-carpeT favoriTes,

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. lent textures. Much like his runway creations, it’s the well-articulated details—silver leaf, crystal accents, a two-tone palette that was implemented to mimic the appearance of a black and white photograph—that define Toi’s work. When asked what the fashion equivalent is to his home, Toi says, “I see it as a glamorous black and white gown with silver beading, worn by a modern-day Marie Antoinette.” houseoftoi.com

Trend Spotted: Fur-trimmed pillows and any type of furnishing with mink trim are so chic right now.

parisian persuasion Enamored with French styles, fashion designer Zang Toi transformed an early-20th-century New York City apartment into his personal Parisian-inspired retreat. Posh accents in the sitting room, such as a custom silver-fox rug, antique Baccarat chandelier and portraits of Marie Antoinette by artist Natasha Zupan, pop against high-gloss white walls. COLOR THEORY THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND REBEL-CHIC FASHION HOUSE LIBERTINE HAS A HIDDEN AFFINITY FOR INTERIORS, MADE EVIDENT IN THE MODERN TRANSFORMATION OF HIS RUSTIC LOS ANGELES BUNGALOW.

REFASHIONED APPROACH Fans of Johnson Hartig’s lauded eco-friendly fashion label Libertine revel in his ability to turn tired vintage clothing into couture ensembles. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says. Such was his method when he set out to design A solid piece of wood forms the band for this unique cuff, complete with a 14-karat gold accent with spinel and white coral charms. 14K YG Spinel & Coral Cuff, $6,950; devillefinejewelry.com

his Los Angeles home, incorporating a mix of vintage and modern pieces, vibrant Damien Hirst paintings and graphic black and white fabrics. Rules rarely apply to the self-taught designer, who often finds inspiration in the unexpected and pays little attention to trends, which explains, Hartig says, why the evolution of his interiors is as constant as his couture collections. “My home, like Libertine, is always a work in progress.” ilovelibertine.com

Design Tip: Go wild, edit and try as many combinations as you need until something jumps out.

Available in a number of coverings from Elite Leather, this soft angular swivel chair features a brushed aluminum base and unique upholstered body. Palos Verdes, price available upon request; eliteleather.com

Sneak Peek: I’m in a ’70s mood for spring 2012. It’s an era that made a big impression on me, even as a kid decorating my bedroom.

Interior Insight: I like to make sure every room has one great antique piece as an anchor, and then I work from there.

Part of ABC Carpet’s Color Reform collection, this antique, hand-woven rug was over-dyed in Turkey to give it a deep, saturated color. Purple Color Reform Vintage Rug, $2,999; abccarpet.com

Up Next: I was approached before to design a line for the home and wasn’t ready. Now, I think I am.

Johnson Hartig’s fall collection for Libertine is reminiscent of works of art, specifically, he says, “post-World War German expressionistic prints. We took a small area and blew it up to get the look we were going for.” 258 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

STAYING POWER FROM THE EARLY CREATION OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG’S ICONIC WRAP DRESS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF HER ANTICIPATED LINE OF HOME DÉCOR, IT SEEMS THERE’S NOTHING THE RESPECTED STYLE ARBITER CAN’T TACKLE.

BRANCHING OUT It’s little known that Diane von Furstenberg’s passion for interior design stretches as far back as the 1980s, when, while lovers of the DVF brand were admiring her revival of figure-flattering dresses, she released a series of books on home décor. “I love the balance between color, texture, pattern and proportion that can exist in both fashion and the home,” she says. Often acclaimed Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi crafted this ornate ring with 24-karat gold, white, yellow and cognac diamonds and pink tourmaline cabochons. R3028, $9,887; barneys.com

for her liberal use of pattern and color, it seemed a natural transition for von Furstenberg to later debut lines of homeware and textiles. Most recently, von Furstenberg channeled her expert sense of interior design in a series of suites for the venerable Claridge’s hotel in London. “My aim was to respect the legendary glamour of the hotel, while incorporating pieces that beautifully illustrate my passion for pattern, texture and travel.” dvf.com

Muse: I am always inspired by women, nature and the 20th century. For me, these sources are timeless.

Design Tip: Have fun with textures, large prints, florals and stripes in ways that make you feel beautiful, but comfortable.

Philosophy: I design clothes that I love and that I think women will feel beautiful wearing. The same applies to my home products.

GATHERINGS

d e s i g n e r r u n w a y 2011 presented by asid orange county chapter and laguna design center On June 15, Luxe Interiors + Design was a proud sponsor of the 4 th annual Designer Runway event for the Orange County chapter of ASID in the Laguna Design Center at Center Court. VIP guests were hosted by Sid Goldberg and Elliott Halem at the Kravet showroom, where they enjoyed cocktails and lively conversation with the judges. In Center Court, guests were treated to tequila shots, wine from Youngberg Hill Vineyards in Oregon, and specialty drinks by Breakaway Spirits. CafĂŠ Neff catered dinner and dessert. While the guests enjoyed a lively happy hour, the 17 design teams were working hard behind closed doors where they were given 90 minutes to take a bag of fabric and create their very own runway pieces. Master of ceremonies Lynn Chichi added her own comedic spin throughout the evening while introducing each of the models and narrating the design creations. With hip hop music pumping through the speakers, each model strutted down the runway for the judges and crowd, showing off the finished frock.

Photography by Tony Flores Photography and Diane Pendergast Photography

Oday Shakar, Alexis Bellino, Michael Berman, Kelly Persellin and Joe Ruggiero made up the panel of judges. Congratulations to all the winning teams! First place went to Carrie Bachmayer, Kristina Theodorou, Susan Theodorou and Austin Boyd, whose winning piece—created from Thibaut fabric and Fabricut trim—was inspired by the movie Black Swan; second place was awarded to the team that included Judy Ziccardi, Melissa Kuzmanoff, Danielle Beniam and Krystin Richter, who created a look from Vervain fabric and Stroheim trim; third place went to Julia Caro, Olya Volkova, Kelly Ferm and Michele Prata, who fashioned a piece from Harlequin fabric and Fabricut trim. Special accolades go out to the co-chairs, Beverly Stadler and Jennifer Anderson. Overall, it was an incredible night of fashion and design and a great success for the event charity Working Wardrobes.
