green shoots. We’re kicking off this spring in pursuit of optimism, creativity and new inspirations. Fortunately, we’ve come across much of it this year, starting in January at Maison & Objet in Paris, where green hues seemed to dominate furniture and accessories, and continuing with an upbeat mood at design markets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The evening before I wrote this letter, we hosted dinner with a group of designer friends at San Francisco’s stylish Twenty Five Lusk. During dessert, Ted Boerner posed a thought-provoking question: “Do you know your life’s purpose?” Consider that for a moment while I share my response: “I’m not exactly sure and don’t mind being ambiguous about it.” Perhaps that’s because I consider uncertainty and curiosity to be welcome mats at the door of creativity and reinvention, an environment where ideas take shape and green shoots sprout up. All of us here, however, are quite assured when it comes to our passion for this magazine, and to serving our readers and the design community. Let me share an exciting project that will be in full bloom this November⎯ Maison de Luxe, our first national designer show house at Historic Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, taking place in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Greystone. DESIGN Just months after the one-year anniversary of his death, the fashion world—and, indeed, the world at large—is still reeling from the sudden loss of designer Alexander McQueen. His penchant for complex storytelling and over-the-top presentations challenged fashion conventions, and his absence reverberates strongly in the industry today. This spring, The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will honor his legacy as artist and auteur in Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. PRODUCT IN PIECES We’ve long been fans of the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into the mosaics by Sicis the Art Mosaic Factory. Now, the Italian brand has teamed up with fashion icon Christian Lacroix for a line of home furnishings. The designer (who partnered with Sicis independently of his own company) drew inspiration from his hometown of Arles, France, known as a treasure trove of Roman tiles and antiques, while focusing on maintaining clean lines and comfort. ART MIX MASTER Reconsider your concept of color: That’s both the request and goal of Carlos Cruz-Diez. This FrancoVenezuelan artist views color not as a static property but as an active process of the eye, and his exploration of color has been the driving force of his five-decade career. The first large-scale retrospective of his work, Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time, will be on view at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through July 4. There’s a tremendous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and quality of the product line. You can sense it throughout the entire facility. The average tenure of our labor force in

Reading is probably 30 years, where sons and fathers work side by side. When we are the ones bringing a concept from cradle to grave—in the fact that we have the designers here and the engineers in the factory— it brings the whole story together. It’s important that we control from concept all the way through to when the consumer gets it on their door. The amount of man-hours that go into the Archetypes line, for example, is astronomical as opposed to a fully automated factory. It’s anywhere from 15 to 20 artisans physically working on the product after concept, so every order has 15 to 20 people touching it along the way. Baldwin is an investment. We’re not the cheapest hardware brand, nor will we ever be. We want to make sure that people’s expectations are exceeded when they choose to invest in us.

We can make changes at the drop of a dime if we deem them necessary. What most interior designers are interested in are things that they don’t find everywhere else. So that’s the true key to the craftsmanship: where the mills are constantly coming up with new things that we have not seen before.

From styling all of the shoots around the world, working on page layouts, selecting images, etc.—I have been thoroughly immersed in every part of the process. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR WORKING WITHIN A NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE. WHAT’S THE KEY TO CREATING A ROOM WITH IMPACT WHILE USING NEUTRALS? You highlight and emphasize using texture. I am not against the use of color and use color frequently; it’s just that color is used to accent rather than as the palette. YOU WROTE ABOUT CREATING DISPLAYS OF OBJECTS. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OFFBEAT PLACES TO SHOP FOR THEM? I love finding items whilst I travel, coming across a small shop that may not look like much from the outside but, upon entering, is a treasure trove. Never judge a shop by its exterior.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COLLECTIONS? Oh my god, I have too many. My most significant collections are my paintings of interiors, my 18th- and 19th-century garden plans and my bronze perfume burners. And I think I have now reached the age where I have to stop. WHERE ARE SOME UNLIKELY PLACES WHERE YOU DISCOVER GREAT FINDS? If you’re a hunter, there’s no place that’s unlikely because you shop everywhere. I don’t care if it’s all those shows out in the Hamptons or whether I’m in a little stall in the Paris Flea Market—you just find things.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR SOUTHERN HERITAGE SURFACE IN YOUR DESIGN? It’s not so much in the physical; it’s in the ease and hospitality that rooms express. If a room just feels rich, who gives a damn? What are you going to do to make it inviting? And that is the ability—which is a sixth sense, in my belief—to really make a room welcoming. And I think you can do that if you live like that. And I think Southerners live like that.

French designer Philippe Delzers created this elegant cabinet as part of The Appartements Privés for Élitis. Delzers envisioned a modern collection with an ethnic twist, referencing long voyages and African legends. The cabinet’s bronze-sculpted handles with glass cabochons appear like jeweled bracelets against a scratched-wood exterior powdered with gold.

“This cabinet reminds me of the great pieces by Eugene Printz from the 1920s and ’30s. I love the leg and handle detail as well as the overall finish. It looks like a very rich piece. A pair of these in a big entry with beautiful ceramics or sculptures on top would look great. Similarly, a pair in a living room flanking the fireplace would be dramatic and wonderful.”

have an unmistakable look: chunky, tufted pieces punctuated by round, multicolored buttons. “The mismatched-button stuff is what sells, which makes me happy because that’s my favorite,” she says. Bingham works in eco-friendly materials when possible and culls the corresponding buttons from her huge vintage collection or from her clients themselves, who sometimes send in buttons from nostalgic clothing items they wish to see incorporated into the custom pieces. After working in reupholstering, Bingham finally decided that “it’s easier to start from scratch,” enlisting the help of her husband, a home builder, to construct each of her made-to-order offerings. Now, Bingham works out of a large room in her own home, where her children—ages 9, 12 and 16—pitch in, and she couldn’t feel luckier: “I wouldn’t change this for anything.” ironthreaddesign.com; 512.577.7520

Self-Indulgence: I take a nap every single day, and I love to read. I’m a ﬁrm believer in ﬁnding time for yourself whenever you can.

Fantasy Career: This is it. I love what I do! It’s hard work physically, but I love the colors, the textures and the ﬂexibility. It’s perfect.

Design Icon: I ﬁnd myself looking up to Charles Eames. The simplicity and vibrancy of his work is delicious.

Current Project: We’re remodeling our house, and I’m in charge of the decorating, painting and all of the ﬁnal touches. I’m constantly pushing myself to create.

Design Icons: Heron of Alexandria. His amazing vision and creative genius made him probably the greatest inventor and designer of the ancient world. Also, Mariano Fortuny, the founder of Fortuny Fabrics. He preserved the classic motifs from history in such a beautiful way.

exact aesthetic required a year’s worth of redesigning and retroﬁtting. Fortunately, Austin-based architect Edward B. Frierson’s first thought was that the structure had potential but lacked refinement in the details. “We needed to find a scale and style for the house that was going to be relaxed yet formal at the same time. It came down to knowing what we had to peel off to make it work,” the architect says. And the homeowner agrees: “We grappled with it a bit, because we were working with something that already existed. We didn’t want it to be a formal house, so that played into a lot of our finish choices. Ed totally understood the project and where I wanted the house to go.” He adds, “If I had to put my finger on what made the process of the renovation such an enjoyable and positive experience, it would be the great collaboration and the mutual respect between builder and architect.” For his part, Fuentes relied on his meticulous nature when blending the old construction with the new. “We had a lot of windows and doors to put in, and we needed to make sure the masonry matched,” he says. “Another challenge was

POOLSIDE COOL The architect chose a slightly rougher palette to bring an edge to the formality suggested by the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s size. The terrace boasts a large fieldstone pattern with steps and pool coping of lueders limestone. Wall lanterns are from The Copper House in Epsem, New Hampshire, while the hanging copper pendants are from Two Hills Studio in Austin. The homeowners purchased most of the outdoor furnishings from Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fireplace & Patio in Austin.

It was such a drastic change from the original.” Every inch of the outdoor living area had to be maximized, since the space between the house and the fence that marks the bordering golf course is limited. Frierson covered the porch and extended the area to accommodate a cabana and outdoor fireplace, and ensured privacy for the pool. As for the wife, her biggest surprise has been the amount of time she now spends outside. “It’s fabulous for casual entertaining. Plus, we have three young kids, so we probably spend 98 percent of our time in the kitchen and family room or in the outdoor living spaces.” She’s also partial to the formal living room —even if it’s more for show. “It’s very much a part of the flow of the home. It’s what you first see when you walk in, so it had to be presentable by nature. It was very cavernous when we began, and not at all inviting; the changes we made allowed it to become much more intimate.”

To keep the mood light, Fuentes incorporated kid-friendly features, including an in-ground trampoline and an upstairs media and game room with soundproof doors. The kids’ bedrooms and guest rooms are upstairs, with the master suite, an office and a piano room on the main floor. The homeowners brought heirlooms and other favorites from their previous home, but the extra square footage they acquired made additional purchases necessary. Working with Katherine Jones, a designer in Austin, freed up the wife to pursue her passion: the hunt. Jones assisted with resources, from lighting to rugs, and helped with fabric choices, furniture and art placement. All team members were thinking long-term—no cosmetic quick fixes—and appropriate elements were modified to meet modern green standards, from updated mechanical systems to energy-efficient windows and doors. “When you’re going to be in a residence for a long time, you should try to satisfy different moods and different seasons,” says Frierson. “Having that flexibility really makes a house feel like a home. It’s not just a beautiful presentation; that’s easy. What I want, at the end, is to give my clients a place where they’ll feel comfortable.” L

CURB APPEAL The upper and lower porches contain tongue-ingroove cedar coffers, mirroring features found in the interior, while the lower porch is lined with limestone flooring that matches surfaces around the cabana and pool. But those looking to rub elbows with the contemporary master responsible for this glass jewel box in Preston Hollow would do better to knock on the door of Dallas architect Michael Malone. While the home’s structural steel frame and massive glass expanses are certainly reminiscent of one of architecture’s favorite sons, it was Malone who balanced all of the residence’s modern elements with its uniquely shaped site and the homeowners’ serenity-seeking, private personas. “It’s everything we wanted in a house,” the couple gushes. “We didn’t have a clear picture going into this, but thanks to Michael’s insight and his taking our input into consideration, it turned into something far beyond our expectations.”

That’s no small commendation coming from homeowners who originally had no intention of building a new home. At first, they were simply looking to add an extension to their existing 1970s contemporary on the other side of town—a move their real estate broker advised against and that would eventually lead them to an unusual acre-and-a-half lot. “The site had never been built on before,” says Malone. “It sat for probably close to 18 years as a blank field with nothing but weeds growing on it.” The house that would eventually rise like a phoenix out of the long, narrow plot that drops down to a creek, takes full advantage of its positioning, with window walls that face north to avoid the heat of direct sunlight and a 2,400-square-foot, infinity-edge pool that acts as a focal point, grounding the entire design.

SINK OR SWIM The pool was a feat of engineering, one that required Malone get an assist from MESA Design Group and White Rock Pools in Dallas. The dining room peninsula holds a custom table the homeowners commissioned in Chicago, which Malone expertly built the dimensions of the space around.

GREEN SCENE From the curb, the home is purposely unassuming, with clerestory windows that let in light without giving too much away, and a white stucco façade. “The most theatrical part of the house is the pool,” says Malone. “A lot of negative-edge pools drop oﬀ on one side, but in this one, all three do; it took some very delicate engineering.” To capitalize on the pool’s dramatic impact, Malone also ﬂoated the dining area out over the water, creating a room-aspeninsula, with 180-degree views of the surroundings. And while the exacting nature of the architecture provided some challenges along the way, they were challenges home builder Bill Manning, of Dallas’ Manning Snelling & McIlyer General Contractors, was happy to take on. “Steel framing is always a little hard to work with; there’s no tolerance with reveals. Everything has to line up and be super straight,” Manning says. “But I’m glad I got to be a part of it. The project really stands out as one of the best-designed contemporaries in the city.”

SIMPLE TASTES Malone wanted to remain minimalistic with the finishes, so the blonde maple used in the kitchen is the recurring wood choice for the rest of the house. The black-speckled granite on the countertops also reappears in the bathrooms. The barstools are custom from Nelson Line.

HEATING UP The couple wanted to keep the furniture from their previous residenceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a request architect Michael Malone kept in mind when considering the scale and shape of each of the new rooms. Art also played a huge role in the interiors: In the living room, a large Otis Jones graces the wall on the left, while three Agnes Martins preside over the fireplace. The side table at the forefront is from the Kerry Joyce Collection.

Though the pool and its jutting, glass-encased peninsula make quite a formidable statement at the rear of the house, Malone deferred to the homeowners’ shared love of privacy by ensuring the structure remain relatively unassuming from the street. “I wanted it to be reﬂective of their lifestyle,” the architect explains. “I didn’t want a big, sweeping front or a giant, two-story stair. It’s modest and unpretentious and that worked well, because now, when you walk in, you don’t know what to expect and it takes your breath away.” That element of the unexpected is what continues to endear the couple to their

modern gem. “When you walk in, you’re in an anteroom with a relatively low ceiling, but then you open a sliding door and the ceiling expands to 20 feet, and you’re hit with a wall of glass from the right; all of a sudden, you’re in the middle of this stunning, almost shockingly extravagant scene,” the homeowners smile. “We love it. It’s like a surprise every time we come home.” L

stucco walls and tile roof have lived here for generations. And that’s just the way builder Allan Edwards, of Houston-based Allan Edwards Builder, and architect Troy Campa, of Newberry Campa Architects in Houston, planned it. “We wanted something with details that stood out,” says Campa. “And we wanted it to have the feel of an Old World house, yet function well for modern-day living.” The architectural details—copper gutters, wooden beams and brackets on the exterior, and thickened walls, stone fireplace mantels and reclaimed hardwood flooring inside—give the house style and a sense of history. “The tiles on the roof were imported from Spain,” says Edwards. “They are at least a century old. They came from churches, homes and other buildings, and their color varies from tan to red depending on the color of the clay in the village they came from.” The home’s free-flowing layout, however—the living room, kitchen and breakfast rooms form one first-floor great room—place it in a contemporary context. And the décor, which interior designers Michael J. Siller and Christopher Alexander, of Houston’s Michael J. Siller Interiors, describe as a mix of contemporary and traditional accented by a Texas twang, creates the high-end, comfortable feel the homeowner requested.

“Our intention was to have the house embrace the yard,” Campa says, noting that the bedrooms have balconies. “We wanted it to take in the view of the pool, covered patio and summer kitchen.” These desires had a direct influence

on the most distinct areas of the home—the dining room and the breakfast room. The 27-by-16-foot dining room, which opens to the front courtyard, is as big as a ballroom. “It gives a lot of flexibility because it’s really two rooms— a dining room and a sitting room or library,” says Campa. “If there’s a large party, you can seat 20. For everyday use, the sitting area can be used for pre-dinner cocktails or after-dinner coffee.” Siller tied the two spaces together with a single custom carpet. On the sitting room side, he placed custom chairs upholstered in distressed leather, as well as Texas memorabilia—including a bronze horse statue on the mantel—to create

what the homeowner, a newly single man, likes to call his “cigar bar.” In the dining area, a circular table paired with English-style chairs adds a touch of elegance. “It’s a very unusual combination of rooms,” he says. “Everyone who walks in says, ‘Wow!’” The breakfast room, which Siller furnished rather formally to complement the adjoining living room, is a glassed-in conservatory that blurs the lines between indoors and out. “It’s like sitting on the patio,” says Campa. “The stone columns are encased in glass and mimic the ones outside.” The homeowner, who also owns a condo and a ranch in Texas, wanted the house to do double duty: It had to be a fabulous site for business events and a comfortable space for his casual daily lifestyle. “He was looking to start over,” Siller says. “So we bought everything new.” To create that new age-old look, the designer used traditional pieces upholstered in distressed leather with contemporary Asian-inspired furnishings and introduced a mix of textures— like chenille fabric and silk and velvet pillows—to add warmth to the neutral color palette that makes the owner feel at home every time he walks through the arched door. “We even made the door look Old World authentic!” Edwards offers. “We weathered the wood to make it more welcoming.” L

Austin, “This is the first time I’ve renovated a house that I had originally designed,” he says of the “Texas meets Tuscany meets Frank Lloyd Wright” dwelling that he placed on its premier lot over 10 years ago. “You can’t help but notice it,” he insists, which is precisely how his clients felt. After asking Clark to design a new house from the ground up, the couple did an unexpected aboutface when the architect ferried them on the customary tour of his past projects. When they walked into the limestone, stucco and glass stunner, “they fell in love,” recalls Clark. It’s obvious why: A window-lined front gallery stretches across the width of the living room, channeling guests to the vast cathedralceilinged room or to the double-height dining room to the right. A screened-in porch and deck just beyond provide a place for pleasant conversation in cool seclusion; at the back of the house, a tree-shaded pool and dining pavilion promise opportunities for total relaxation. The house was exactly what the busy couple was looking for. And though it wasn’t for sale at the time, it soon—and conveniently for Clark’s clients—hit the market, and they quickly nabbed it. Discussions ensued about renovating the “old” house, with the couple vetoing any big changes. “The house was finished out fairly traditionally,” says Clark, who quickly went to work on the redesign with project architect Scott Ginder. “The rooms were painted green and brown, and handcrafted hardware and light fixtures gave the rooms a lodge-like feel.” The new homeowners’ sensibilities were more modern, but the fix Clark suggested was an easy one: “We changed all the surfaces—such as countertops and paint colors,” he says, “but the bones of the house remained intact.”

GREEN WITH ENVY Architect Dick Clark left the limestone and stucco exterior of the house intact but topped it with a new roof. Bigger changes were evoked with the landscaping by Rick Scheen, of LandWest Design Group in Austin, who replaced the existing plantings with a sward of plush Palisades Zoysia.

SPECIAL ORDER In the kitchen, the sculptural lines of the Gaggenau hood look dramatic against the absolute black of the granite countertops and backsplash from Austin’s Architectural Tile and Stone. It was at this point that the couple turned to Suzi Dunn, a designer who works in Clark’s firm, to bring the home’s palatial scale down to a more human level. “I was already familiar with the house, having worked on it before,” says Dunn, “and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it again.” Since the homeowners had already tossed out most of their own furniture—with the exception of their collections of fine art and glass—everyone was looking forward to starting over. “Our clients are very sure of their tastes,” notes Dunn. “They understood immediately that the house has good bones. They also felt—as I did—that there was so much texture everywhere; they didn’t want the furniture to compete.” In the living room, Dunn opted for sleek sofas and low-slung ottomans so as not to distract from the statement-making limestone block fireplace. But while Dunn favored furniture that was subtle and unfussy, she splurged in an unobtrusive way. “The upholstery—suede in an ethereal champagne hue— is pure luxe,” she says. Plus, color makes a striking appearance in the form of a vivid red Tufenkian rug that anchors the space.

In the master suite, glamorous materials—such as the cream leather-upholstered headboard, camel leather bench at the foot of the bed, quilted silk bed cover, and white-and-beige patchwork silk curtains—don’t overwhelm in a room that is otherwise understated in volume, size and color. “Even though the homeowners’ tastes lean toward the understated,” notes Dunn, “I felt that we could get a lot of mileage from wonderful fabrics and colors without seeming too excessive.” If there is a place where outright luxury has a legitimate foothold, it’s in the backyard, where agave and sago palms flourish next to well-groomed live oaks. The homeowners asked Rick Scheen, of LandWest Design Group in Austin, to “clean up” the backyard, knowing from previous experience working with Scheen that he is committed to creating landscapes that complement their architectural settings. “They wanted a backyard oasis,” he notes, so Scheen added lushness

in the form of agapanthus, lilies and spider lilies, and corrected grade and drainage problems by building up lawn and beds with healthy soil. “Before,” says Scheen, “this yard looked like no one ever went out there.” Now, the landscape is an ever-present part of the homeowners’ daily lives— either as the main view from the living room and kitchen, or as a cool retreat from the Texas heat. And, it makes Clark feel good, too. “I’ve always liked this house,” he says. “I'm glad the new owners are there and having so much fun. I like to see a house I designed being enjoyed.” L
