Caroline, Queen of the Kitchen
Caroline Kremler was not always the bouyant baker you see before you. Time was, her flowery (and flour-y) fantasy — complete with the cherubic, chocolate-smeared smiles of her children — was merely “pie in the sky”. But then she spoke with us. And we listened (a lost art, we’re told). And together, we arrived at Caroline’s Pastry-based Paradise. You might even say getting there was… well, a piece of cake.

green shoots. We’re kicking off this spring in pursuit of optimism, creativity and new inspirations. Fortunately, we’ve come across much of it this year, starting in January at Maison & Objet in Paris, where green hues seemed to dominate furniture and accessories, and continuing with an upbeat mood at design markets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The evening before I wrote this letter, we hosted dinner with a group of designer friends at San Francisco’s stylish Twenty Five Lusk. During dessert, Ted Boerner posed a thought-provoking question: “Do you know your life’s purpose?” Consider that for a moment while I share my response: “I’m not exactly sure and don’t mind being ambiguous about it.” Perhaps that’s because I consider uncertainty and curiosity to be welcome mats at the door of creativity and reinvention, an environment where ideas take shape and green shoots sprout up. All of us here, however, are quite assured when it comes to our passion for this magazine, and to serving our readers and the design community. Let me share an exciting project that will be in full bloom this November⎯ Maison de Luxe, our first national designer show house at Historic Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, taking place in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Greystone. We are delighted to have 25 of the nation’s top interior designers reimagine this exceptional estate. It is also our privilege to have Holly Hunt serve as honorary chair. Stay tuned…
IN BLOOM With Barry Dixon, Randall Whitehead and Susan Inglis at our panel for Design San Francisco; with Roger Thomas and Donghia President Crans Baldwin at Rubelli; with Nobilis President USA Jannice Reynolds at Maison & Objet.

DESIGN Just months after the one-year anniversary of his death, the fashion world—and, indeed, the world at large—is still reeling from the sudden loss of designer Alexander McQueen. His penchant for complex storytelling and over-the-top presentations challenged fashion conventions, and his absence reverberates strongly in the industry today. This spring, The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will honor his legacy as artist and auteur in Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. On view from May 4 through July 31, the 100-piece retrospective will explore the Briton’s body of work, ranging from his 1992 postgraduate collection to his final posthumous runway show in 2010. Themed galleries such as “The Savage Mind” and “Romantic Gothic” will take viewers deeper into the mind of this dark genius. metmuseum.org; 212.535.7710

PRODUCT IN PIECES We’ve long been fans of the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into the mosaics by Sicis the Art Mosaic Factory. Now, the Italian brand has teamed up with fashion icon Christian Lacroix for a line of home furnishings. The designer (who partnered with Sicis independently of his own company) drew inspiration from his hometown of Arles, France, known as a treasure trove of Roman tiles and antiques, while focusing on maintaining clean lines and comfort. The result is a decidedly Old-World-New-World hybrid; look for it this June. sicis.com

DESIGN The allure of Miami Beach remains strong for international hotel brands, as yet another luxury project just opened on famed Collins Avenue: Dream South Beach. Vikram Chatwal Hotels, owners of upscale properties crisscrossing the globe, scooped up two Art Deco icons, the Tudor Hotel and the Palmer House, and merged them into a Moroccanmeets-1970s fantasyland. Designer Michael Czysz of Architropolis, a Portland firm known for its work with W Hotels, created a sexy, serene ambience with a cool color palette, mood lighting and sleek custom furniture. Highlights include the Chopra Center & Spa, the rooftop pool/lounge space Groovedeck and The Tudor restaurant by chefrestaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian. dreamsouthbeach.com; 888.376.7623

ART MIX MASTER Reconsider your concept of color: That’s both the request and goal of Carlos Cruz-Diez. This FrancoVenezuelan artist views color not as a static property but as an active process of the eye, and his exploration of color has been the driving force of his five-decade career. The first large-scale retrospective of his work, Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time, will be on view at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through July 4. The show’s 150 works span from the 1940s to present day and include a dizzying array of media, from paintings (such as Chromatic induction 53, right), silk-screen prints and videos to room-size environments, architectural models and even a recreation of the artist’s studio. Elements of engineering, color theory, kinetics and craft all play a role in his interactive art, which often involves impressive production as well. mfah.org; 713.639.7300

In Summers in France (Gibbs Smith, $35), readers tag along as the Santa Monica-based designer and her family enjoy a visit to their home in the French countryside. Reimagining classic forms in a modern context is the forté of designer Maloos Anvarian, of DWM|Maloos, who credits her mash-up aesthetic to a multicultural childhood, which includes stints in Azerbaijan, Iran and France. ART CRAFTING HISTORY American decorative arts and craft traditions—especially those born in wartime—are the inspiration for Allison Smith: Piece Work, on view through May 29 at the MCA Denver. The Oakland-based artist creates works that engage observers in the craft as well as the storytelling that surrounds it, such as her large-scale braided rug, which she started herself and had completed by gallery visitors. MAD FOR MOD Palm Springs recently played host to the sixth annual Modernism Week, honoring the clean lines and whimsical elegance of design, architecture and culture in the 1950s and 1960s. During the 10day event, guests were privy to architectural tours of the area’s mid-century modern sites, as well as films, lectures, an architecture symposium and Mad Men-worthy parties in private homes. The center of all the action was the Riviera Resort & Spa, a historic landmark known for its intriguing wheel-shaped design and celebrity clientele (including Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin). A recent multimillion-dollar renovation polished up this mod gem while giving it a fresh 21st-century spin. IT HAS SINCE SET THE BAR FOR STYLE, QUALITY AND DURABILITY, WITH SEVERAL OF ITS LINES STILL BEING MADE IN ITS READING, PENNSYLVANIA, FACTORY, WHERE THE PRIDE IN THE AIR IS PALPABLE, SAYS SENIOR PRODUCT MANAGER MARY NICHOLS.
There’s a tremendous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and quality of the product line. You can sense it throughout the entire facility. The average tenure of our labor force in
Reading is probably 30 years, where sons and fathers work side by side. When we are the ones bringing a concept from cradle to grave—in the fact that we have the designers here and the engineers in the factory— it brings the whole story together. It’s important that we control from concept all the way through to when the consumer gets it on their door. The amount of man-hours that go into the Archetypes line, for example, is astronomical as opposed to a fully automated factory. It’s anywhere from 15 to 20 artisans physically working on the product after concept, so every order has 15 to 20 people touching it along the way. Baldwin is an investment. We’re not the cheapest hardware brand, nor will we ever be. We want to make sure that people’s expectations are exceeded when they choose to invest in us.
Left: In Baldwin Hardware’s Reading, Pennsylvania, factory, upward of 20 artisans lay their hands on each product, from hand-polishing to hand-plating, such as in the Couture Collection (shown here). baldwinhardware.com

HEADQUARTERED IN BAY SHORE, NEW YORK, TEXTILE COMPANY DURALEE HAS GROWN LEAPS AND BOUNDS SINCE ITS START IN 1952, ADDING SEVERAL LINES AND A FURNITURE DIVISION TO ITS OFFERINGS. BUT, ACCORDING TO SENIOR STYLIST LAUREN PELUSIO OF THE DURALEE FABRICS DESIGN STUDIO, SOME THINGS HAVEN’T CHANGED, INCLUDING ITS FAMILYRUN STATUS AND ITS SUPPORT OF U.S. MILLS FOR SELECT COLLECTIONS.
As a hands-on, family-operated business, we can be nimble to trends and change directions as we see fit. We don’t have to answer to a
plan that is developed years ahead and can react when necessary. We buy a lot from domestic mills. We always go to them first. It’s a long-term partnership with the mill, and they can get us products faster than other countries. In our company, you can be a customer with a small problem or a big one, and your issue might wind up on the president’s desk. We are in touch with our consumers at the very highest level. We can make changes at the drop of a dime if we deem them necessary. What most interior designers are interested in are things that they don’t find everywhere else. So that’s the true key to the craftsmanship: where the mills are constantly coming up with new things that we have not seen before.
Right: Duralee’s Wainwright Collection (patterns from its Azalea/Cranberry color book are shown here) is fully made in the United States and partially contains post-consumer and post-industrial recycled content. duralee.com

HOW IS THIS BOOK A DEPARTURE FROM YOUR OTHER SIX? It’s the way I approached the subject: standing very much out of the box and looking in. WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE PUTTING THIS BOOK TOGETHER? The book was a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work. From styling all of the shoots around the world, working on page layouts, selecting images, etc.—I have been thoroughly immersed in every part of the process. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR WORKING WITHIN A NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE. WHAT’S THE KEY TO CREATING A ROOM WITH IMPACT WHILE USING NEUTRALS? You highlight and emphasize using texture. I am not against the use of color and use color frequently; it’s just that color is used to accent rather than as the palette. YOU WROTE ABOUT CREATING DISPLAYS OF OBJECTS. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OFFBEAT PLACES TO SHOP FOR THEM? I love finding items whilst I travel, coming across a small shop that may not look like much from the outside but, upon entering, is a treasure trove. Never judge a shop by its exterior.
This living-dining-cooking venue is emblematic of Hoppen’s skill in space planning, as the room is segmented into three functional zones while maintaining a sense of flow and cohesiveness. The monochromatic color palette is another Hoppen trademark, drawing interest from contrasting forms and textures.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THE AVERAGE PERSON MAKES IN DECORATING? Poor space planning, resulting in too much or too little in a room. Always remember to plan, plan, plan—and then plan a little more if you want everything to be perfect.

“There are no rules. And if they did exist, they should be broken or at least put to a very tough test.” —Charlotte Moss
Charlotte Moss Decorates: The Art of Creating Elegant and Inspired Rooms (Rizzoli), $50
CHARLOTTE MOSS Charlotte Moss New York
T H I S I S YO U R S E V E N T H B O O K . H O W IS IT DIFFERENT FROM THE REST? In so many ways, they’re all very similar because they all speak to a philosophy of trusting your instincts about decorating. I want it to be a kick in the pants to compel readers to go do something they’ve never done before but always wanted to.
Moss designed this bangle as part of her Wanderlust Collection for Halcyon Days. Marrakech, $700; halcyondaysonline.com
In typical Moss fashion, all of the rooms in the book—which were created for past showhouses—start with collages full of the designer’s far-flung influences.
YOU WROTE ABOUT WOMEN OF STYLE FROM THE PAST WHO INSPIRE YOU. ARE THERE WOMEN OF TODAY WHO DO THE SAME? There are a lot of people in my business who are doing exciting things. I love Alessandra Branca’s work because it’s bold and beautiful and fresh. And Mary McDonald, her work is very colorful and alive. YOU WROTE THAT YOU’RE A COLLECTOR. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COLLECTIONS? Oh my god, I have too many. My most significant collections are my paintings of interiors, my 18th- and 19th-century garden plans and my bronze perfume burners. And I think I have now reached the age where I have to stop. WHERE ARE SOME UNLIKELY PLACES WHERE YOU DISCOVER GREAT FINDS? If you’re a hunter, there’s no place that’s unlikely because you shop everywhere. I don’t care if it’s all those shows out in the Hamptons or whether I’m in a little stall in the Paris Flea Market—you just find things.
For this great hall, Moss drew inspiration from the English country house West Wycombe Park, whose golden-hued façade is echoed in the ochre walls. The focal point of this comfortable gathering place is a central table stocked with books and curiosities that encourage guests to linger.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR SOUTHERN HERITAGE SURFACE IN YOUR DESIGN? It’s not so much in the physical; it’s in the ease and hospitality that rooms express. If a room just feels rich, who gives a damn? What are you going to do to make it inviting? And that is the ability—which is a sixth sense, in my belief—to really make a room welcoming. And I think you can do that if you live like that. And I think Southerners live like that.

I would go for this fixture when in need of a light source that is not trying to vie for attention with the rest of the environment, whereby it’s a complement to the story, not the main protagonist. French designer Philippe Delzers created this elegant cabinet as part of The Appartements Privés for Élitis. Delzers envisioned a modern collection with an ethnic twist, referencing long voyages and African legends. The cabinet’s bronze-sculpted handles with glass cabochons appear like jeweled bracelets against a scratched-wood exterior powdered with gold.
“This cabinet reminds me of the great pieces by Eugene Printz from the 1920s and ’30s. I love the leg and handle detail as well as the overall finish. It looks like a very rich piece. LISA GIMMY L ANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Project: A private residence in Orange County, home to a sustainable architect. Program: Landscape architect and firm principal Lisa Gimmy, ASLA, LEED AP, worked closely with her client to create a series of outdoor living spaces that would provide both public and private areas for relaxation, designed to meet LEED specifications. “We symbolically separated the entertaining and meditation areas with a water feature and a little bridge to give the homeowner a feeling of crossing from one realm into another,” says Gimmy. Sustainability: Eco-conscious plantings, drip irrigation, permeable paving and the complete absence of a lawn all contribute to the project’s low-water-use profile. lglalandscape.com

05 JUST REWARDS RON RADZINER , FAIA MARMOL RADZINER Project: Ron Radziner’s personal residence, winner of a 2009 national Honor Award from the ASLA. Goal: A seamless integration of structure and landscape. “Because the house was to be so transparent, the plan was all about connecting the interior and exterior spaces,” says Radziner. “The interaction between the two is what drove the design.” Program: The property was divided into thirds, with two outer sections embracing a central area that encompasses a pool and the home’s kitchen. “The zones were defined in that way so that, thematically, the center portion became kind of a riparian landscape—with California natives that grow near creeks and rivers—while the outer sections are planted with things that grow in a dryer climate.”

Plantings: Selections include sycamores, California live oaks, valley oaks, gooseberry and low-growing ceanothus. White sage and Cleveland sage were incorporated to add scent and additional color; a small expanse of buffalo grass blankets a play area for Radziner’s children. “The trees were a very important part of the plan,” says Radziner. “They’re like veils across the landscape. They create a sense of separation but you can still see through and beyond them.” Surprise Bonus: Radziner used cape rush for ground cover, and, though he’s now lived in the house over three years, “I still haven’t had to trim it—even once—and it still looks great,” he says. “The lack of maintenance just blows me away.” marmol-radziner.com

10 GABRIEL A YARIV L ANDSCAPE DESIGN Project: A 1926 Wallace Neff house built in the French Eclectic style. Program: Landscape designer Gabriela Yariv rethought the grounds in their entirety—green areas, hardscape, outdoor entertaining spaces, pool, exterior fireplace, furnishings, light fixtures and accessories—and based her design around a massive California oak tree that already existed on the property. Plantings: Weeping acacias, clipped boxwood, lavender, white iceberg roses, westringia, variegated dianella and an ivy espalier. “My goal was to evoke a casual, French Provençal feeling, in keeping with the home’s history,” says Yariv. gabrielayariv.com
11 FIRM FOCUS STUDIO H Profile: The Newport Beach-based firm, led by founder and principal Warwick Hunt, has created custom landscape and exterior design plans for both large and small residential projects in Southern California, Arizona, New York and Costa Rica. Approach: Hunt meets with his clients on site, taking particular note of their home’s interior color palette and its architecture, to concept a planting program that incorporates both. The Balancing Act; limited edition
Stephanie Clair is driven by a fervent desire to capture “the positive
giclee-on-canvas
moments we take for granted in life.” The San Diego artist started painting seriously nine years ago and, after three years, was able to quit her day job to pursue brushwork full-time. She uses mostly eco-friendly, water-based oil paints and works out of her home’s two-car garage, which she’s converted to a light filled art studio and sometime gallery space. Clair started painting in college after discovering in a class that a brush in hand “just felt right.” She credits her relatively rapid success to having a signature style: Many of her works depict happy couples or individuals taking time out to enjoy a moment, rendered in soft colors and brushstrokes, often in cubist forms. Not surprisingly, Clair is happiest when her work has a positive effect on the beholder. “If I inspire people through my paintings to live life fully and to cherish these little moments in life, that’s a beautiful thing.” stephanieclair.com; 619.231.0944
POSITIVE LIGHT
STEPHANIE CLAIR Top Shops: There are a lot of incredible galleries on Ray Street; it’s known locally for and by artists in North Park. A lot of new studios have moved into the area, and it’s becoming a bona fide design district.
Collection: I’ve been cultivating orchids for about 10 years, and one of my favorites is an oncidium that smells like chocolate. It can fill your house with that rich, sweet smell for weeks.
Influences: Picasso, Kandinsky, Modigliani and Chagall.
Fantasy Career: I have three! Environmentalist, world peacekeeper and traveling food critic.
Getaway: Bali, a beautiful, spiritual oasis with amazing culture. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon; it was absolute bliss.
Self-Indulgence: Anything with chocolate. Oh, and wine! If I found a wine-flavored chocolate, I’d be in trouble.

Lantern Masters president Jackie Olesker never imagined she’d have a career in lighting. The Baltimore-born mother of two—whose wallmounted lanterns and pendant lamps are mainstays in the glamorous interiors of such places as the Sarasota Opera House in Florida and the newly revamped Glenmere Mansion in New York—initially pursued teaching but fell into lighting design when her husband, Stu, bought the Westlake Village business more than 30 years ago. Today, Olesker oversees an inventory of more than 1,000 indoor and outdoor fixtures ranging from Spanish-inspired wrought-iron chandeliers to clean-lined aluminum sconces, collaborates with architects and interior designers on custom pieces, and concepts new designs with her daughter, a partner in the company.

up on a verdant lot and embraced by wild, flourishing gardens, the house seemed out of place, both on its own feet and amidst the grand estates that share its Brentwood address. But its indomitable charm and unrealized splendor were immediately evident to Timothy Corrigan. “It was this incredible, beautiful property,” says the Los Angeles-based designer, whose namesake firm stands behind projects across the country as well as in Europe and the Middle East. “But the house was almost bungalow-like, with a single bedroom, very low ceilings and no architectural detailing to speak of.” Corrigan decided to purchase the little-house-that-could as a labor of love and was determined to bring it to its full potential. “The greatest challenge I can take on is an existing home that—for whatever reason—just doesn’t work and updating it to meet the needs of today,” Corrigan says. “I love that.” So, with the help of builder Brad Jensen, of Jensen Zigman in LA, Corrigan completely reimagined the house, significantly raising its ceilings and adding a second floor, connecting the property’s two-story guesthouse to the main structure and replacing a tennis court with a new pool and guesthouse.

“I kept the original footprint and expanded outward and upward from there,” says Corrigan, whose seamless, yearlong renovation nearly doubled the home’s square footage, taking the property from forlorn to fabulous in the process. An abundance of custom millwork, including paneling, built-ins, ceiling beams and architectural molding, now adorns every room, while a bank of French doors added along the back of the house floods those same rooms with light that bounces off the gleaming oak-plank floors. “You’d never know where the old spaces end and the new ones begin,” the designer says proudly.

The ugly duckling now a bona fide swan, Corrigan’s next task was finding permanent caretakers for his beloved pet project. He didn’t wait long. “I walked in, called my husband and said, ‘You have got to come see this,’” recalls the woman who today calls the place home. “We had been looking for a house

This was exactly what we were looking for.” Almost, chuckles Corrigan. “They loved everything I had done with the house, but there were things they wanted to add.” On the list: extra bedrooms to accommodate their brood of three, a large home office for the husband,

and an expanded laundry room and pantry. Struck by Corrigan’s obvious passion for the house, the couple retained the designer not only to make the structural changes, but also to direct the home’s interiors. “In getting to know Tim through the walkthroughs and the closing, it was clear to us that he was the only person who could do it,” says the wife. Once the requested additions had been made, Corrigan set out to imbue the home with a traditional aesthetic befitting its architectural beginnings, selecting furnishings, accessories and artwork—many of them antiques acquired through auction—with a decidedly English bent. “That was absolutely the right feel for this house,” he says. And, as a nod to his clients’ young children—and the couple’s propensity for large family gatherings and even larger at-home charity events—Corrigan deftly mixed in durable materials and finishes that would not detract from the elegant tableaux he created.

“They stressed that this was going to be a very high-traffic, kid-friendly home,” says Corrigan. “So we did a lot of slipcovers in outdoor fabrics, for example, and a marine varnish on some of the furniture so they didn’t have to worry about spilled drinks.” All told, the second phase of the project incorporated an additional 1,700 square feet and took a year to complete, a wait the wife says was well worth it. “My parents are Holocaust survivors, so we have no hand-me-downs, no mementos, no physical remembrances of our family history,” she says. “But this house, because it feels as if it’s been here forever, makes me feel very grounded.” And, filled as it is with beautiful things, “I now have keepsakes that are very special to me and have great meaning, and that I can one day pass down to my children.” L

CIRCLE BACK A circular motif reinforces the concept of creating differentsized groupings for various types of entertaining. Leather Shuttle chairs found at Alphaville Design frame a stainlesssteel-and-espresso-finished-wood coffee table, a custom piece from designer Christopher Kennedy. Its shape echoes the stainless steel bands in the sound-absorbing cloud-like accent above. The sofa—a Vladimir Kagan upholstered in a red Thomas Lavin Ultrasuede—was one of the owner’s must-haves.
SEEING RED Marble-infused EuroStone terrazzo tile and Dunn-Edwards Whisper white paint create a snowy-hued blank slate for furniture and art in the entry. Kennedy used the owner’s favorite color—red—discreetly so it becomes a focal point within a room rather than an overwhelming presence. Here the drama is provided by a Robert Ivers painting. The sofa was designed by Jean-Marie Massaud for Cassina.

The bland landscape wasn’t the only problem. The home’s original designer had buried the kitchen deep in the center of the house without a single window, the patio doors were too small and the pool looked like a Fred Flintstone flashback. Still, the house had a lot going for it. Corwin loved the location, with its broad views of the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains, and the high ceilings and mostly usable floor plan were also pluses. He realized that if he renovated he could have the home of his dreams: a sexy contemporary with the confident optimism of a mid-century modern, all glamorous furniture and sleek finishes.

The homeowner called in architect Anders Lasater, principal of Anders Lasater Architects in Laguna Beach, to help bring his dream to life, and the two tackled all the minuses during a three-day-long design and draw session. “We had to erase a lot of mistakes,” says Lasater, who ultimately moved the kitchen into a little-used room nearby; the addition of a movable window wall opened the view from out front to the relandscaped pool in the rear. Sleek, precisely fitted Italian cabinetry from Snaidero now fills the space. “Installation was exacting,” says Tom Lathrop, of Lathrop Development and Construction in Palm Desert. Lasater used a specific process to turn the fantasy into a reality. “I investigate a client’s particular desires and create a design that will work for their space and their space alone,” he says. That modernist approach—stating a problem and then solving it—here gave conceptual depth to what otherwise may have simply been a laundry list of furniture and finishes. But what a list it was. Corwin presented designer Christopher Kennedy, principal of Christopher Kennedy Design in Palm Springs, with a selection of musthaves, including a Vladimir Kagan sofa, B&B Italia chairs and Charles and Ray Eames seating. Corwin, though he loves the mid-century aesthetic, did not want to live in a museum, “so I freshened the look with contemporary pieces and more customized elements,” says Kennedy. “We didn’t want the house to look like a consignment store.” LUXE INTERIORS

For pieces from his own hand, Kennedy channeled what the great designers of the 1950s did. “Saarinen and Eames took the latest in technology and concept and brought it forward,” he says. “That’s what I like to do.” In the living room, for example, he perched an espresso-finished cylinder atop a stainless-steel base to create a coffee table; above it floats a cloud of disks sheathed in acoustic fabric and bands of steel. The grouping is one of three seating areas in the room. “Mr. Corwin either entertains 50 at a party, six for dinner and discussion, or he cuddles on the sofa with a loved one,” says Kennedy. “We designed the room for all three uses.” Circles above and circles below establish a minor motif that’s reflected in the dining room’s spherical Macassar ebony table and the curved wall that embraces it. The brown-on-brown tones of the ebony show up throughout in cabinetry, upholstery and rugs; they contrast the brightness of the finishes, particularly the high-gloss terrazzo flooring. The selected stone and tile has a neutral look

GUEST SWEETS Two guest bedrooms are located in a separate wing of the house. In one, a tufted white-leather bed and leatherwrapped nightstands from Modloft, purchased through Kennedy’s showroom, gleam brightly against a turquoise wall. Table lamps from CB2. The striped fabric on the custom bolster is Paul Smith for Maharam. Algarve armchairs by Zuo Modern encourage guests to bask in the sun.
OPEN SECRET Answering the homeowner’s wish for both privacy and openness in the master bedroom, Kennedy selected a bed with a low leather headboard and a simple draping of Sferra linen bedding found at International Down & Linen at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. A full-width bolster upholstered in a Jim Thompson striped silk from Kneedler-Fauchère brings a hit of red into the room. Custom nightstands of Macassar ebony are lit by Meridian table lamps from YLighting in Palm Springs. An Artecnica table flanks the Anjuna outdoor daybed from Zuo Modern.
VANITY FAIR A red Neo-Metro cast-resin-and-stainless-steel backlit mirror and vanity address the need for both fun and function in the powder room. In renovating the house, Kennedy and Lasater searched for products like this one that updated the central idea of modernism by using newly available materials and techniques in a fresh way. The owner simply loved the color.

overall but delivers a bit of sparkly bling when you get close. And, because Corwin is a fan of fine fashion, too, his designer chose upholstery with a subtle wink to menswear. “We were inspired by the finishes and materials of 50 years ago that set the stage for the furniture and art of the desert lifestyle,” says Kennedy. “Life in Rancho Mirage and mid-century modern design have something in common,” concludes Corwin. “Both are comfortable with their indoor and outdoor personalities. This house took that up a notch.” L

neighborhood and the space all sang, but the inside fell flat: a tedious exercise in drab. “The walls were a deep terra cotta, so nothing popped,” says the wife. “It all just blended.” After years of collecting antiques, vintage furniture and Asian sculpture—not to mention vast amounts of art from the husband’s skateboard company—the couple entreated Melissa Palazzo, of Costa Mesa-based design firm Pal + Smith, to help mesh these disparate elements into their dream home. “After four years of living there, we were ready for a new style,” says the wife. “The kids were older and could appreciate nicer furniture—and be trusted not to ruin it!” Their goal was to create something fun and family friendly that didn’t shy away from the homeowners’ favorite shades: deep oranges, purples and greens. “She was really open to doing crazy things,” says Palazzo of her client. “She has no fear of color.” The key was to place those punches of color just so, and to form a dialogue among them. So persimmon drapes from Osborne & Little pop in the living and dining rooms, and the color repeats in a blown-glass pendant lamp

from Pierre Anthony Antiques at 1stdibs in the powder room. In the family room, bright green drapes by Christopher Farr speak to the lime accents in just about every other space: throw pillows in the living room, chair cushions in the kitchen, vintage glass vases in the dining room and the electric Cole & Son wallcovering from Lee Jofa in the powder room. In the dining room, teal-and-gold wallpaper—even on the ceiling—calls out the blue in kitchen glasses. “From a palette standpoint, it sounds like a disaster, but it works,” says Palazzo, noting that painting the walls white allowed the color to do its work without overwhelming the senses. “All the colors really brought the house to life.” The designer and her clients chose surprising fabrics like vinyl—“amazing vinyls in the coolest patterns and colors,” says the wife—that work in a kid-centric household. “It was really important that we get furniture that we could live with and not just look at,” says the mom of two. “It’s not going to work unless I know that I can spill something on it.” 216 LU X E I N T E R I O R S

GROUND LEVEL The Avignon rug from Unique Carpets has a grounding effect on the family room, meshing stools, artwork and framed skateboard pieces from the clients’ private collection. The most challenging task was integrating the old and the new: pieces ranging from a childhood mirror to a 3-foot-high Buddha. Palazzo and her client engaged in a kind of scavenger hunt, sorting through the collection to find what would fit. “We really focused on the most meaningful pieces,” says the wife. “And we made a lot of friends very happy by giving away some of the things we didn’t use.” In each room, they chose one piece as a foundation on which to build. So the Pal + Smith Azore rug is the focal point in the living room, with softer, colorcoordinated pieces set around it. In the dining room, the wallpaper dominates, and the set pieces are subtler. And, in the family room, wild green curtains take the gaze, but the space is grounded with the dark shag rug and the sofa upholstered in Lulu DK’s Chant. With the help of general contractor Steve Christiano, of Newport Beach-based Christiano Homes, some structural changes were made as well: Limestone floors were placed in the kitchen, family and living rooms, and old wooden windows were replaced with Fleetwood sliders that bring in waves of light. “Those small changes made a huge difference,” says Christiano.

The resulting look, says Palazzo, is officially eclectic modern, but it’s more eclectic and less modern than anything that’s come before, with layers of Asian, contemporary, vintage and skateboard, set against all that bright color. “If the bones are contemporary and clean, then you can get away with this look without feeling cluttered,” says Palazzo. “It has a glam factor but feels earthy, too.” Her client puts it another way, using a bit of skateboarder vernacular. “Every day, we wake up and say we love it here,” she says. “It all just vibes.” L

couple—an oil executive and his wife—already had a primary residence in Houston and a weekend escape in Colorado when they happened to drive through the area to drop off a daughter at summer camp. Much to their surprise, they found a virtual paradise they hadn’t even realized they were seeking. “The temperature is perfect, the architecture is beautiful, the people are lovely— what’s not to love?” says their interior designer, Sandra Lucas, of Lucas/Eilers Design Associates in Houston. The couple chose an acre-and-a-half parcel in an idyllic, gated golf-course community and sought out an architect and builder who was an expert in the high-end Tuscan-style homes that account for three-quarters of its landscape. They found one and the same in Jim Sylvester, of JS Design Group and Sylvester Construction, both based in Rancho Santa Fe. Sylvester was an especially wise choice—he had already built 10 other custom residences in the neighborhood, including his own. “Over the last decade, Tuscan homes have been a big hit here,” Sylvester says. “People like the casual but elegant living.”

they wanted a larger, more personalized retreat with lighter wood floors and trim and an abundance of ambience. “Their one directive was, ‘We want the architecture to show—we want it to be light and airy and serene,’” says Lucas, who has worked with the couple on various homes over the past 17 years. The home’s exterior of stucco, natural stone and custom-made mahogany doors and window frames, topped by terra-cotta roof tiles, was designed to mesh well with its Tuscan neighbors. But, instead of filling the interiors with traditional dark-wood beams and stone floors, Sylvester accented eggshell walls with blond woods—stained Douglas fir beams from an Oregon lumber mill; alder paneling, baseboards and window frames; and white oak floors—as well as milky limestone fireplace surrounds and Carrara marble in the master bathroom.

Taking her color cues from the airy interior and sun-washed hills outside, Lucas selected a palette of light, neutral tones. “It’s quite a large house, but it feels like one big, cozy space because the finishes are consistent,” Lucas says. “We looked to the landscape for the green granites in the kitchen and powder bath, and the wood tones came from the color of the soil and the natural elements that are part of the setting.” Lucas continued that organic program when selecting furnishings and accessories. The custom slipper chairs in the living room, for example, have carved oak frames with a distressed finish; they flank a Mecox Gardens triangular, bronze-plated, stick bamboo side table. One new addition to the couple's art collection is an ink-and-gesso painting of a graceful woman in a full skirt that reminded Lucas of the lady of the house—a regular on Houston's best-dressed list—when she spotted it in a gallery. The piece now has pride of place in the master bedroom. Her client “loves all things beautiful,” says Lucas. “In her Houston home as well as in this new place in Rancho Santa Fe, all of the furniture has a historic reference, but it's very clean-lined and fresh, and extremely warm and livable.” L

UPWARD BOUND WHILE RESIDENTS OF CHICAGO KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT LESS-THAN-PERFECT WINTER WEATHER, AN APPRECIATION FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS IS NEVER LACKING, AS EVIDENT IN THIS HIGH-RISE TERRACE.

SUBTLE SEPARATION Just as interiors are divided into rooms, so, too, should this method be applied to the outdoors. Scott Byron, landscape architect and CEO of Lake Bluff, Illinois-based Scott Byron & Company, designated areas on this terrace for different activities. “There’s a small lounging space by the barbecue, a larger dining area and a more intimate sitting spot,” he says. “It’s a very large terrace, so we had to find a way to create a sense of intimacy through furniture placement and scale.”

to enjoy. Accordingly, Byron always bases his design concepts for high-rise projects on one thing—the scenery. “Everything you do on a terrace is about the views,” he says. “A successful landscape design is kept very simple. It’s not about adding layers of stuff so much as it is about taking the layers away.” Minimal and unfussy plantings, furniture and accessories work best, as shown in the scene at right, featuring Janus et Cie’s Amalfi II collection, surrounded by crabapple, lilac and boxwood.
WIND POWER Chicagoans know their beloved habitat isn’t dubbed the Windy City without reason. As a landscape architect, Byron must consider these weather extremes. “On higher floors, we have to design a space that would hold up if it were to be hit Thin, elongated legs provide a delicate touch to Janus et Cie’s powder-coated stainless steel sofa from the Amalfi II collection. It’s not hard to imagine a night spent outdoors when the luxuries of the interiors are present. In the pool house at right, Sheldon Harte, principal of Laguna Beach, California’s Harte Brownlee & Associates, along with Irvine, California’s EBTA Architects, incorporated such elements as radiant floor heating and retractable doors that close to the outside on command. “The structure allows people the luxury of being outside but not exposed to the elements of sun and moisture,” Harte says. “But it can also be used as auxiliary guest space.”
COMFORT ZONE Fortunately for homeowners, no longer does the “outdoor-friendly” label mean you must sacrifice comfort. “Outdoor furnishings have come so far in recent years,” Harte says. “They handle much better, Los Angeles designer Kristen Buckingham’s first line of outdoor furnishings includes this intricate piece, shown in traditional teak. and there are so many more options in material and style.” With a plethora of possibilities—from canvas and acrylic fabrics to wood, wicker and steel furnishings to outdoor paintings, sculpture and lighting—transforming the outdoors into an extension of the home is effortless.
WEATHER REPORT Combating the everyday sun and moisture of a coastal Southern California property is best achieved through covered environments with means for temperature control. But, Harte says, that’s not the only weather concern he’s dealt with. “The Santa Ana winds can wreak havoc on exposed furniture and plants, particularly on Inspired by Roman architecture, this chair from Brown Jordan comprises hand-forged aluminum. Every South Florida waterfront home begs for ample outdoor lounging space, and this Tuscan-style structure by interior designer Carola Hinojosa, principal at Miami’s Hinojosa Design Studio, and Miami architect Ramon Pacheco, of Ramon Pacheco & Associates, Architect and Planner, is no exception. “We aimed to create a very relaxed and calm atmosphere,” Hinojosa says. The spacious rear terrace features stone columns, light-walnut travertine flooring and contrasting dark wood beams on the ceiling.

MATERIAL WORLD Though it’s easy to enjoy an outdoor living room, South Floridians must take heed of the furnishings they opt to leave outside. “Choosing the correct materials is essential for the outdoors in Florida,” Hinojosa says. “Avoid any metals, unless they are powder Sutherland Furniture’s dining table features a teak top with lazy Susan attachment. NATURAL GROWTH The uneven terrain of Colorado often brings with it architectural hurdles. In this case, it was an old-growth Ponderosa pine located centrally in the site’s building envelope. “Challenges often represent opportunities for extraordinary design solutions,” says Valerie Alexander Yaw, principal at Aspen’s Bluegreen. “We chose to preserve the tree and design the home around this great specimen.” Staying true to the environment, Yaw repurposed materials from the site and sourced local stone, boulders and wood for the outdoor living spaces.
CREATIVE FORCE Working closely with nature warrants plenty of opportunities to Upholster pillows and cushions in hues evocative of nature, such as those in this turquoise striped fabric from Perennials. Jake Stripe, Agave, price available upon request; perennialsfabrics.com
be creative. While much of the home and outdoor features are clad in natural materials, Yaw incorporated a series of contrasting stainless-steel poles, some outfitted with light fixtures, to add interest and serve a functional purpose. “I was inspired by the client’s seemingly simple request for a place to hang his robe when relaxing in the spa,” she says. “They were designed to mimic the property’s natural pine forest.”
NEW HEIGHTS While Coloradans enjoy prime outdoor weather in the summer, cold winter temperatures and high altitudes can hinder many types of plant growth. “The area’s plant palette is limited by its high elevation, but Bluegreen has spent over 10 years building Part of Summit Furniture’s Smoothie Collection, this contemporary chair features elongated lines and comfortable cushions. GATHERINGS
GARDENOLOGY Gardenology, along with Luxe Interiors + Design, held a grand opening celebration for its Newport Beach location on September 16. Owner Lili McIntire was all smiles during the spectacular evening of music, Champagne and amazing food. Party guests crowded the beautiful home furnishings showroom and overflowed onto the candlelit patios. Proceeds from a gift basket raffle benefited the Juvenile Diabetes Research Center. Party guests raved about the hor d’oeuvres created by Chef C. Barclay Dodge, fiancée of Gardenology’s interior designer Vicki Jansma. Former ASID President David Rance also attended the event. Plus, Gardenology’s Encinitas location held an eighth-anniversary celebration in October. The party surrounded a 12-foot glittering Christmas tree and included Champagne, live music and delicious food from neighboring restaurant Via Italia.
