Chikaming Township Supervisor David Bunte asked if the township could avoid creating a full burn ordinance but rather adapt the township’s current nuisance ordinance “on the specifics of encroachment of smoke on somebody after a certain hour of the day.”

Board members approved the police department applying for a traffic safety grant.Taylor said the grant, which is through the state through the Office of Highway Safety Planning, focuses on enforcement areas such as pedestrian safety, bicycle safety and drunk driving and allows officers to “specifically focus for 10 hours on that type of enforcement period.”

County drain commissioner Chris Quattrin said that, in the petition, they’re hoping to connect the two drains from Wolcott on the east and west side of Red Arrow Highway, to collect up all the orphan drain structures around and to repair an outlet that was broken out by people who own the property.

According to State law, eliminating the requirement for an elected park board has to be done with a public vote. Almost all of the 1,240 townships in the State of Michigan (and 100% in Berrien County) have some other structure. I encourage you to vote “Yes” on November 8 and provide the Trustees of Chikaming Township the opportunity to design a more responsive, efficient, accountable structure for the Park Board.

We need a more responsive structure. In early 2021, I made a financial contribution to implement a 3-year plan for renovating Harbert Community Park that included removing the baseball field and building ADA pathways to connect to recreational/entertainment features for people of all ages. The terms of the gift were that it be matched by Township funds – which was done. After the project began, the Township was asked to commit token funds to leverage State and Federal grants in 2023 and 2024 so that the Year 2 and Year 3 goals could be achieved. The Township turned down the request with a public comment “we should be

The disconnect between Park Board goals and Township involvement results in missed opportunities, and undermines interest in long range planningWeneed a more efficient structure. Plans to renovate a park need to meet requirements and timetables of the Zoning and Planning commissions. Detailed knowledge of which resides with the Township, the Commissions, and the Trustees. The Township, however, views the Park Board as a separate body, “not to be “interfered with.” This means there is no efficient means for partnering with, and coaching the Park Board on Township requirements.  As a consequence, the implementation of improvements for Harbert Community Park is now a year behind schedule.

Many fans wager on football and many play fantasy football, making each game, each play, exciting. I still don’t bet on games, but I’ve played fantasy football for years, and I find it keeps me interested in every game, not just Bears games. But since I was a little kid, I’ve loved the Bears.

We had a ping pong table in our basement when I was growing up, and when nobody wanted to play, I would go downstairs, push the table against the wall, and play a game I made up featuring the Bears...wish I could remember how it went.Knowing how much I loved baseball, my dad offered to take me to a baseball game or a Bears exhibition game for my birthday when I was about 10 years old. I chose the Bears game ( the baseball game was the White Sox versus the Yankees. If the Cub game had been on the table, I’m not sure what I would have done.”

As of Sept. 8, 100 residents and visitors had filled out a survey to help create the authority’s five-year plan.

One recent project that’s in the works is a potential 10-foot asphalt right of way trail that would be located on a vacant road west of the middle/ high school’s track/football field on Clay Street and connect to Oselka Park and the STEAM facility being worked on across the street. It would include also benches and a drinking fountain.

One of these recreational resources that is shared by the entities is Oselka Park, which is owned by the city but used frequently by the school district.

At their Thursday, Sept. 8, meeting, board members approved a design concept (done by Abonmarche), with the crosswalk moved to the pickleball courts. This summer, Berrien Community Foundation announced the authority as the 2022 winner of the William J. Deputy Grant, which will help pay for water stations that will feature drinking fountains, a bottle-filling spout and, on some, a lower dish for dogs. A press release stated that the first three will be installed this fall.

Hannon, who sits on six area boards, said she looks forward to working together on other projects that may be up the pipeline.

“It kind of gives you an idea of where everybody thinks they’re at and then you can take a step back and go from there – it gives you a general idea of where your needs are and then with those need you start to form plans as far as where you think could help fill those gaps,” Donnelly added.

“I think I’m lucky to live in such a beautiful place - and I want to do what I can to improve it,” she said.

New Buffalo Area Recreational Authority moving ahead on future improvements projects

embers of the New Buffalo Area Recreational Authority (NBARA) Board have been on the move in terms of planning projects and applying for grants that could potentially transform the area since first meeting in January.

“It’s trying to work collaboratively and more or less trying to figure out what works for the whole areainstead of one person looking at one thing and another person looking at another we’re trying to look at the big picture,” Patrick Donnelly, chair of the NBARA Board as well as parks director for New Buffalo Township, said. The authority is comprised of three entities: the City of New Buffalo, New Buffalo Township and New Buffalo Area Schools. Meetings are held at 10 am. the second Thursday of the month at New Buffalo Township Hall.

NBARA Board Secretary Michelle Hannon said Donnelly did a “great job” inventorying the 15 existing water stations, such as which ones are working, which ones need an upgrade and possibly adding bottle fillers to some.“Just having that information and working with some of stations that needed to be updated can save us

outside and enjoy all we have to offer here,” she said.

Donnelly said the five-year plan would be a joint one, with individual sections for the city, the township and theTheauthority.surveywill hopefully give board members an idea of issues such as if there’s enough trails in the area, if there should be more events and activities for the youth and the elderly.

“It allows us to apply for funding through the state for grant opportunities to allow us to tackle bigger projects,” Hannon said.

At the Sept. 8 meeting, Tony McGhee, vice president of development services of Abonmarche, said that they’ll will be meeting with the township and the city with regards to prioritizing projects for the plan next month. In November, the final draft plan will be available for public comment by the end of November and the beginning of December. By January, final reviews and approvals should take place.

he station would also serve as a good resource for mothers going to the beach and would prevent them from having to carry “jugs and jugs” of water on their way to the beach, Hannon said, as well as getting more people in the area for long distance events.

Hannon added that each jurisdiction will get to choose where they want their water stations. Possible locations could be at the baseball fields at the high school by Bronson Street (one already exists by the pavilion).

Another location could be at the planned trailhead at Smith Street for the proposed Marquette Greenway, a 60-mile nonmotorized trail from Chicago to New Buffalo.

“It’s nice to get everyone at the same table and then you can work towards what you’re doing - this way, everyone’s sitting down together and working toward the same goal,” Donnelly said.

Donnelly added that they “want to benefit this community because we share all our recreational resources.”

The other part of the story is that it is the best pizza you’ll ever eat, and all those folks that got their pizzas from Steve during the pandemic have come back over and over.

I was taken to Emma’s Hearth and Market in Bridgman at the corner location of Lake Street and Red Arrow Highway. It’s where I had the best pizza that I have ever had the pleasure to eat. Having opened in the beginning of the pandemic, I thought that they certainly must have had a quiet opening. But owner Steve Zieverink said just the opposite was true: “People couldn’t eat inside back then but could dine on the patio or take their pizzas home and it was, in fact, a bonanza for us in spite of the pandemic.”

The only caution I could possibly make about the place would be that the prices are a little stiff. Our two large pizzas that we ordered with the works were over $60 for the two; however, they were loaded with everything! I mean everything! One could order fewer exotic ingredients and make that $20 - and it’d be worth every penny!
