Council to extend City Manager offer to Richards

T

LINDA HENDERSON IN NEW BUFFALO

he New Buffalo City Council held a special meeting on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 21, to further discuss the selection of a new City Manager. Following a discussion of the three candidates, Dennis Durham, Jeffrey Thornton and David Richards, they unanimously agreed to authorize Mayor Lou IV to finalize an employment offer to Richards as DailyO’Donnell City Manager, subject to the written terms he presented to the Council earlier in the week. The offer is subject to a background check and a finalization of a contract. At the previous Monday’s Special Council Meeting, the members learned that their management selection, Durham, wished to renegotiate some of the original terms of his employment offer, including a salary increase and a longer severance package; however, this was not acceptable to the Council. At that meeting, the members unanimously approved a motion that O’Donnell contact the top three candidates and ask each of them to provide a written response to the Council that included their desired contract length, salary requirements, the type of severance package they required and whether or not they were willing to accept a trial employment period. Richards was the only one of the three candidates to respond to the request. The other two, Durham and Thornton, withdrew their names from consideration. Richards asked for a salary of $80,000, which was within 30 N Whittaker St the advertised range; however, he did not request a severance package, health insurance and or retirement package. He asked Open Daily for a $5,000 moving allowance, which the City negotiated to $3,000. He also asked for a City vehicle for use during work hours. The Council did not agree to this request. The City does have a car available for use when traveling is required, and reimburses mileage costs for travel when using a personal vehicle. Richards agreed to accept the offer with no initial contract, which gives the Council a window of time to evaluate his fit with the City. O’Donnell stated that this was similar to hiring an interim City Manager and if everything worked out, he could stay with the City. Councilmembers will review his performance after the first 90 days and determine a long range plan. “He seems very motivated, and we’d be glad to keep him. If he works out, it would be great,” O’Donnell said. Councilmember Liz Ennis stated that she had spoken with his references and that they were “all exceptional.” She said his Premiere 24 hour fitness facility for men & women 18 years and older. references agreed he’s “low key, patient, brought stability to a Membership options available for both full-time and part-time residents, situation and was very good with conflict resolution.” She also call for details! said that he “wants to come and live here and he wants the job.” 705 W. very year, the same thing happens: Faster than a speeding bullet, another year comes to an end. It used to be my belief that the older you got, the faster that time goes by. My theory was disproved in an article I once read, but I remain convinced that as I get older, the years fly by more quickly. Anyway, I hope you all had a great year, and I hope the coming year brings everyone much joy and happiness. The past year in sports has been thrilling, giving all sports fans great stories to follow. Nationally, LeBron James’ second year back in Cleveland resulted in the Cavaliers’ first-ever championship. They came back from a three-one deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors and win the NBA title. In Chicago, the Bulls missed the playoffs, failing to achieve the chemistry needed to seriously compete. After the season ended, the team started to move in a new direction, trading Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah to the Knicks and signing Dwayne Wade to support Jimmy Butler. So far this season, both have played very well, but the team is struggling to play .500 ball. Hopefully, they can turn it around and return to the playoffs. The Blackhawks lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but discovered another star in Artemi Panarin. The Hawks have been Stanley Cup champions every other year for the last six years. Led by Toews, Kane, and the ageless Marion Hossa, the team is off to a good start, and will contend for the Cup again this year. The Hawks will battle the Blues of St. Louis in the Winter Classic Monday, Jan. 2. Since its inception, the outdoor game has been a fan favorite. The Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl, and the Bears’ attempt to dethrone them has fallen significantly. The good news for Bear fans was the play of some of their rookies, and their poor record will result in them getting a very high draft choice. They were much more competitive in the second half of the season. The big story in the NFL this year was the drop in television viewership. The ratings for pro football have done nothing but grow for many years. In baseball, the White Sox had a tough season; however, so far, they are having a great off season. The team was able to parlay Chris Sale and Adam Eaton into seven highly regarded prospects. Sox fans seem to be happy with the team’s youth movement. My intent was to pretend to forget about the Cubs in this column but a road trip to Harbor Country changed my mind. They replayed the seventh game of the World Series and hearing it again was an emotional experience. I’m really happy that I received a DVD of the Cubs season from Santa Claus. Why did the gingerbread man go to the doctor? He was feeling crummy. Happiest of New Years to everyone. Be safe. Keep smiling. Talk to you next year. Peace, love, and happiness.

Fatal crash in Weesaw Township

n December 26, 2016 at 4:12 p.m, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Personnel were dispatched to an unknown traffic accident at Cleveland Avenue and Warren Woods Road in Weesaw Township. Upon arrival at the scene, the deputies discovered a two-vehicle traffic collision had occurred and that two individuals were determined to be deceased at the scene, while four other individuals have various injuries. Preliminary Investigations reveal that a 2014 Chevrolet sedan, which was occupied by five of the individuals was traveling east-bound on Warren Woods Road and failed to stop at the traffic control device (stop sign) at the intersection of Cleveland Road and was struck by a south-bound 2001 Dodge pick-up, which was occupied by one individual. The driver of the 2014 Chevrolet was a 66 year old male from Howard Township (Niles, Michigan area) and he was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana with life threatening injuries. A 66 year old female, who was the front seat passenger in the 2014 Chevrolet was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana with internal injuries and a possible head injury. A Male subject, who was a back seat passenger in the 2014 Chevrolet was also transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana with non-life threatening injuries.

Two females, sisters Bre Anne Sutherland, age 41, and Laurel Ashley Sutherland, age 37, who were passengers in the back seat of the 2014 Chevrolet were pronounced “deceased” at the scene. They were both residents of Chicago, Illinois. A 51 year old female from the Galien, Michigan area and who was the operator and sole occupant of the 2001 Dodge pick-up truck was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana with non-life threatening injuries. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of the Michigan State Police, the Weesaw Township Fire & Rescue Department, the Berrien County Road Commission, the Berrien County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Medic 1 Ambulance Service personnel. Members of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit are currently investigating the traffic collision. It does not appear as if weather or road conditions played a factor in this traffic collision. It’s unknown if medical issues, narcotics, or alcohol were contributing factors in this traffic collision and those aspects are currently being investigated. Also assisting in the Investigations were members of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Chaplains. — STAFF REPORTS

OBITUARIES Arie Donkersloot, Sr.

A

1931-2016

rie Donkersloot, Sr., 85, of La Porte, Indiana passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016 surrounded by his family. Arie was born May 2, 1931 in Amsterdam, Netherlands to the late Johannes and Elizabeth Donkersloot. His education included apprenticeships in the city of Utrecht in the fields of mechanical engineering. Arie immigrated to America in 1954 just after marrying his longtime sweetheart, Helena. She joined him in the Chicago area six months later to start their American Dream. He was an acclaimed innovator, securing many patents throughout his life; such as the electronic eye-controlled flagpole which automatically raises and lowers the flag and the telescoping docks that form the Michigan City Washington Park Marina. Arie founded the family company, Donkersloot & Son’s Marine Development Co. in the 1970’s. His former projects have developed to what are now known as the local marinas. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of his 120’ barge, the Miss Jamie Lynn, which he designed and built. His famous claim was the Miss Jamie Lynn is unlike any other vessel in the United States, with her capabilities of displacing very little water and being extremely maneuverable in small, tight locations. In his remembrance, “Dutch Skills in America Waters” will continue through his sons, Arie Donkersloot, Jr. and Ron Donkersloot, Sr. He will be greatly missed. Trust in their abilities. You don’t need to carry all the weight of the world. There are people around you that will help you now.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 23—NOVEMBER 21 Education will prove important over the new year. It may not seem like it now, but there will be many opportunities opening up over the next year that will require some education. Hit the books now and master your chosen trade; be ready for any combination of circumstances. Golden ops and silver linings ahead.

GEMINI MAY 21—JUNE 21 Take more responsibility in relationships, now. Taking charge may include financing most of the partnership, as well. Be prepared to back your position with the money. If you have promised to deliver, it is important that you follow through on that commitment. Don’t get greedy. Contribute more, now.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 22—DECEMBER 21 The world will feel much more stable and manageable, this week. This is an excellent time to get your house cleaned and stocked for the new year. Also, this is a good time to plan on what major changes you would like to make to your living space. There is a need to make things more cozy and inviting.

CANCER JUNE 22—JULY 22 While you are still busy focusing on work and finances, love will be looking for you. Unexpected love interests will be popping up all over the place, let’s just hope you are paying enough attention, as not to miss this wonderful opportunity to reconnect with love. Open your eyes and your heart, let love in.

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22—JANUARY 19 You will be much more vocal over the next few weeks. Use this to your advantage by becoming your own advocate. Let your words and actions create the world you want to be in. If you hold back your input because you are afraid of causing conflict, it will be a source of stress. Be honest, yet kind.

LEO JULY 23—AUGUST 22 Many work-related projects or issues will keep you from the down time you were hoping to enjoy this week. Don’t let the fast-paced work schedule wear you out. Stay on top of your game by taking time to stretch and meditate in the mornings. They say those morning rituals set the vibration for the entire day.

AQUARIUS JANUARY 20—FEBRUARY 18 This is a beautiful time for Aquarius. Your ruling planet, Uranus, is turning direct, meaning your energy levels, your mood, your life, will start to flow more easily now. Many unexpected and exciting times are on the horizon. Let negativity neutralize, while you power up on the positive. Good year ahead!

VIRGO AUGUST 23—SEPTEMBER 22 You will be feeling very romantic this New Year’s Eve. So much so, that you may end up proposing. Regardless of how you handle your passions, now is the time to get closer and make plans for the future. Even if you’re not looking to get married, you are looking to solidify your connections.

PISCES FEBRUARY 19—MARCH 20 You won’t just be ringing in the new year, you’ll be ringing in the new you. More than any other sign, Pisces will be undergoing many changes this new year. If you want to land that new job, rock that new look, or just take better care of yourself, now is when these changes carry some longevity. Make it happen!
