Looking back The Newspaper business never ends; as one edition is on its way to the printer another one has already started. The NBT team has brought back an old tradition, this issue contains 2015 in review. It not only reflects on the past year but gives everyone a bit of a break to enjoy the holidays. This week also marks the anniversary of when Mary Beth Moriarty ended her journalism career and I began mine. It has been four years of craziness. One thing I knew for sure was that I did not know how to run or produce a newspaper, only that New Buffalo Times was a significant publication and one with a colorful history, so it was important to keep the presses rolling. I had no idea how I was going to do that until a few days later my long time friend Joe Durk stopped by the office. It was a miracle—Joe was one of the best creative directors in the area. He was creative director for Shore Magazine and prior to that Lake Magazine, little did I know that he had also worked for a newspaper in the earliest years of his career. Thanks to Joe, New Buffalo Times was on its way to a new face

about us The ©New Buffalo Times is an independently owned weekly newspaper that has been in circulation since 1942 and is published every Thursday.

and a new beginning. You know, see, and hear of the rest of the Team often, but behind the scenes is the genius who operates and creates the complex infrastructure of a newspaper, along with creating many of the ads. This publisher’s letter is to say thank you to Joe Durk. There is a whole team in the spotlight getting the information to him, always past deadline. There is just one of him making it look beautiful and intelligent on the newsprint. Happy New Year to the New Buffalo Times Family, you have all contributed so much to a publication we can be proud of. The work is endless and intense but together we do it. I look forward to continued success and growth. Happy New Year to all of you, our faithful readers and supporters. I am always pleased with constructive criticism helping us to improve our efforts and each time I see someone pick up the New Buffalo Times it amazes me that we did it, we really did it. Miracles really do happen. dee dee duhn

irefighters were called out to the home of single father Steve Ruszkowski and his three children on Taylor Street early Christmas Eve. Sirens sounded around 10 a.m. and City of New Buffalo firefighters quickly responded. The fire engulfed a house on South Taylor Street, just off US-12. While the fire was kept from spreading, the home was severely damaged, and everything in the home was destroyed. A report on ABC News 57 showed the family to be in good spirits, grateful to have made it out safely, and appreciative of their extended family of “3,000 people,” the caring and generous residents of New Buffalo. To help the family, a “go fund me” account was created; persons wishing to contribute can do so on the gofundme.com website. No cause of the fire has been announced. — Therese Donnelly

ven when the ground is bare, there is plenty of snow on Michigan’s ski slopes, thanks to advanced snowmaking equipment. Steve Kershner, chairman of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, and director of snow sports for Shanty Creek Resorts says that even if Mother Nature doesn’t provide the perfect base of snow, Michigan’s ski areas are prepared to make it. “Each year our ski areas add more and better snowmaking equipment, to insure that when temperatures are 28º or lower, there will be snow on the slopes,” he adds. Snowmaking facts With just a little cold weather, Michigan’s ski slopes can be blanketed in white. Somewhere around 28˚ F. is the “magic number” for snowmaking, depending on humidity and wind. It can be a little higher if it is dry out and lower if it is very humid. When the magic number is reached, you can be sure Michigan ski areas are making snow. Ten inches of natural snow, when packed, usually adds only one inch of snow to the ski slope’s base while 10 inches of man-made snow adds seven inches of base. Man-made snow is more dense and durable. For every 10-degree temperature drop, snowmakers can double the output of machine-made snow. The lower the humidity, the better for making snow. If you add the temperature plus the humidity, that sum should equal less than 100 for favorable snowmaking weather. Michigan ski areas are pioneers in snowmaking. James Dilworth built and patented the first fan snowmaking gun in the world while at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs. He refined and improved on his first gun while at Nub’s Nob, resulting in another patent. Today, one of the leading manufacturers of snowmaking equipment – and the one chosen to make snow for the most recent Winter Olympics – is a company called SMI Snow Makers, headquartered in Midland, Michigan. For Michigan ski information and links to Michigan snow conditions, visit www. goskimichigan.com. — staff reports

another lawsuit... ew Buffalo’s City Manager Rob Anderson and Council Member’s Weber, O’Donnell, Spirito and Peterson are suing the Planning Commission. This will cost the tax payers thousands of dollars in legal fees and amounts to a bluff by Anderson to get the Planning Commissioners to rescind a decision to issue a special use land permit for a window drive through at the pharmacy. On December 1, at a Planning Commission meeting that Anderson staffed, he did not raise any warnings that he thought the Commissioners might violate State law if they issued the permit but a week later he told the City Council members that the Commissioners had acted ““contrary to State law.” Anderson is supposed to represent the best interest of the city yet, according to him, he allowed the Commission to vote when he thought it might be contrary to State law and then turned around and sued them. Anderson might have believed that this was a way to discredit the Commissioners but it backfired, he is the one who ends up discredited through this type of deceptive practice. Anderson knows very well that the Commission had every legal right to issue the permit to the pharmacy and his use of strong legal language is a tool of intimidation that worked on the four city

council members who reacted out of fear. For some reason Anderson does not want a drive through window at the drug store and he appears to be on a quest to control the special land use permits for the city. As he fast tracks his plans for the central business district, special land uses might be in the works and it would behoove him to have control of them. The volunteer Planning Commissioners are vested by law to make land use decisions not Anderson. Legally challenging them will not change their authority but might diminish their credibility. Tax dollars will go to legal fees for an attorney to defend the City Council’s interest and one to defend the interests of the Planning Commission. Add to that is a likely lawsuit by the pharmacy against the city and possibility the Planning Commissioners if they rescind their vote. In a city the size of New Buffalo, we are fortunate to have both a grocery store and pharmacy. If the pharmacy needs a drive through window to stay competitive and it meets the conditions of the zoning code that included a review and evaluation of public safety issues, the city manager should be doing everything in his power to make this happen. Instead he and the four city council members are using our tax dollars to divide the city that could have negative ramifications for years to come. — Susan Gotfried, New Buffalo, MI

From the Bleachers Column by Kurt Marggraf in chicago

A

nother year draws to a close and once again, I find it unbelievable. Time is such a precious commodity. As I age, it goes so much faster than it did when I was young. I know this is a sports column, not an advice column, but I urge you be aware of how quickly time does fly. Try not to spend too much of it doing just one thing (unless you truly love that thing). Work hard, play with passion, rest when you get the chance, and don’t forget to show and tell the people who are important to you that you love them. The old saying goes, “When one door closes, another one opens.” Well, the same can be said for years. So as 2015 comes to a close, 2016 awaits us with open arms. Many of us make resolutions, telling ourselves and anyone else who might listen, how we will improve over previous years. These resolutions have probably been happening since the beginning of time. New years bring new beginings which offer us the opportunity to improve. I know this much; on the first day of the baseball season, our favorite baseball team, no matter which one that is, is undefeated. Hope springs eternal. My hope is that all of your dreams come true in the New Year. So let’s hope that 2016 brings our favorite teams great success on and off the field. Better than that, let’s hope the fans are treated to excellent play and many more victories than defeats. Maybe in 2016 our guys and gals can get most of the lucky breaks to go their way, and we can crown a few local champions. I’m going to use a quote from Tom Waits, a somewhat eccentric singer songwriter. In this song, he’s talking about the past, but while writing this column, the words kept popping up in my head, and my thoughts went like this..... maybe our local teams and players will be so successful that someone who is now a youngster will write a song featuring them someday. Anyway, some of the lyrics to the song are: “So let’s drink to the old days And DiMaggio too Drysdale and Koufax Whitey Ford And to YOU.” Have a safe and happy New Year’s Eve. Talk to you next year. Peace, love, and happiness!

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. — Benjamin Franklin

“P

lease bear with us as we remodel. The pharmacy itself has been sold to a group of pharmacists known as Hometown Pharmacy based in Newaygo, Michigan. Eventually, the pharmacy department will be re-located to the area now occupied by the hardware department. This enables them to have a drive-up window and a separate department within the building. They will keep the same pharmacists and technicians and the same hours until further notice. The hardware department will be incorporated within the main part of the building along with our variety, beer, wine and liquor. Hardware will have much more space to stock many more items. After nearly 45 years of pharmacy service to our communities, thank you for your loyalty and past business. — Ray and Janie

horoscope

december 31, 2015-january 6, 2016 as interpreted by Sandy “star” Bendt

Aries March 21—April 19 An old friendship will be rekindled, or a feeling of being reconnected will transpire this week. Take time to resolve any issues that may have been keeping you apart or disconnected. It is worth talking about, so you understand the real issues and don’t fall into the same behavior again.

Libra September 23—October 22 You will be drawn to the strange and attract the unusual this week. Which will be good because a part of you is feeling very unconventional and quirky. Your ability to instinctively determine fair market price and emotional value of items, make this a good week to shop antique and resale shops.

Taurus April 20—May 20 Conservative attitudes and doctrines will not sit well with you, at this time. You will feel a growing impatience with long drawn out details. You are ready to move forward and embrace change, and it will seem like there is a lot of unnecessary details to attend to first. Take your time, don’t rush.

Scorpio October 23—November 21 People may think that a lot of what you are doing is to attract attention and seek approval. You could come off as having a one track mind, or not caring about what other people need. Don’t get discouraged by people’s misconceptions, you march to your own beat and don’t need their approval.

Gemini May 21—June 21 There will be some technological upgrades or changes made this week. These changes will cause radical advancements in your career and health sectors, for the better. Take time to really understand and learn these new techniques. Your mind is very capable and ready for new ways.

Sagittarius November 22—December 21 It is important you find a productive outlet for your feelings and creative ideas. Your nature is somewhat fiery and when you hold things back you tend to explode. Let go of intense feelings by dancing, painting, or singing loudly. Seek ways that are spontaneous and create laughter.

Cancer June 22—July 22 Your ability to see through facades can make you either a formidable opponent, or a trusted councilor. Your nature is to reflect back to people what they show you about themselves. Stay true to yourself and be clear with people rather than letting them think what they want. Speak up.

Capricorn December 22—January 19 Be sure to look your best when going out in public because you will be arousing interest and attracting attention where ever you go. Your company will be sought after and your presence will help other people feel connected. Your personal magnetism is at an all time high. Flaunt it, baby.

Leo July 23—August 22 You are going to have to take the lead with partners and family members, if you want accomplish any household changes or renovations. Be sure to write things down, or draw diagrams because the people around you will not seem very imaginative or understanding without seeing it on paper first.

Aquarius January 20—February 18 It may feel like friends are being oppressive or authoritative, this week. When dealing with the complexity of certain personalities, your best bet is to break away from traditional peacemaking tactics to more unusual compromises. Have fun with friends and let love conquer differences.

Virgo August 23—September 22 It will be easier now to control your mannerisms and reactions, when confronted with work place changes. By delaying your reactions, your point of view will be better understood, and more accepted. It is through controlled, well thought out responses, that will advance your position.

Pisces February 19—March 20 You are feeling like you need to make some radicle changes to achieve what you want, and this could feel overwhelming, now. Try not to focus on everything at once. Start by clearing out the old things or ideas, and then bring in new modalities as the need for them arises. Don’t over think or plan.
