Dear Horizons at NCCS Supporter
As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, I am humbled and excited to reach out to you as the Horizons Board Chair. What began in 1964 as a bold idea by former NCCS Head of School George Stevens evolved into a mission to close opportunity gaps in Fairfield County. Since our inception, Horizons has embraced a project-based academic and enrichment model with a focus on swim instruction. By 1970, summer enrollment jumped from 20 to 100 students; in 1995 Horizons National was formed; and this year, we proudly provided 396 students with a robust array of year-round academic and enrichment programming and support!
As we reflect on these achievements, we also look forward with excitement. We are thrilled to welcome our 7th Executive Director, Dr. Leanne Tormey, to Horizons at NCCS on December 2. Leanne’s extensive experience as a lifelong educator and her leadership in the nonprofit sector equip her with the unique insights and skills to build upon the strong foundation laid by her predecessors.
This year has been filled with milestones worth celebrating. At the annual conference in February, Horizons National presented Horizons and NCCS with the Andrew Clarkson Award in recognition of our enduring commitment to the Horizons mission, and our impact across the network. In April, we gathered 400 supporters for our 60th anniversary “Horizons Greatest Hits” Benefit. And once again this summer, our students thrived
during their six weeks on campus, guided by the theme of “I Am Enough.” Thank you to Nehemie Moïse, who served as our Interim Executive Director over the summer and throughout the fall — we are immensely grateful for your leadership. I want to also thank our dedicated faculty and staff, families, board members, and volunteers for sustaining our program and allowing our students to experience the joy of Horizons.
While we celebrate our successes, we also pause to remember three steadfast supporters we lost this year: Claire Friedlander, Warren Serenbetz, and Kiki Sweigart. We are immensely grateful for their support and contributions to our organization and know that their legacies will live on through Horizons.
As we close out this milestone year and look ahead to the next 60, I am filled with optimism and anticipation. With Leanne at the helm, our strong partnership with NCCS, and you at our side, I am excited for the future of our program.
Thank you for your generosity,
Leigh

“I am deeply honored to begin my service as the Executive Director of Horizons at NCCS. I stand gratefully on the shoulders of the visionary leaders who came before me — whose wisdom and dedication have paved the way for our continued and shared success.”

& WONDER
Our Student Community
of admitted students demonstrate remarkable resilience, coming from households facing financial challenges at or below 200% of FPL (federal poverty level) guidelines. Their diverse backgrounds enrich our community and foster a vibrant learning environment.
At least 67% of our admitted students exhibit incredible perseverance as they navigate academic and social-emotional challenges. Their determination and diverse experiences are vital to building a strong, supportive community.
At this year’s Multicultural Fair, we discovered that Horizons students and their families represent at least 26 countries!
Community Characteristics
“I’m always happy to help out. I enjoy being around people from a variety of cultures, learning from one another.”
Lashwanda, Horizons caregiver
COMMUNITY
A core strength of Horizons at NCCS is the long-term commitment we make to our students and their families, which builds an incredible sense of community. Tamara, a Horizons caregiver, expressed: “I feel included. I feel like I’m in a place with faces of parents just like myself looking to support our children in the best way possible. I feel heard and listened to.” This spirit of inclusion is reflected in our encouragement for caregivers to get involved — whether they are volunteering at our holiday party, serving as a Family Council Rep, or attending a community Super Saturday event. This active family involvement trickles down to our student success and overall engagement.

EXCELLENCE
The Tim Rivlin Excellence in Teaching Award was established in 2023 to honor the late Tim Rivlin, who was our beloved summer Senior Program Director for 45 years. This annual award recognizes the next generation of outstanding educators. Ashley Harrington (above left) and Monae Cherry (above right) received this award for demonstrating a passion for educational equity, dedication to their students, creative curriculum development, and mentorship among colleagues.
Ashley has been a treasured enrichment Lead Teacher in the Senior Program for the last four years through her Cooking and Life Skills Class, which makes the connection between food and culture. Monae, an alumna of the program, has been a part of Horizons for 16 years, rising from a Teaching Assistant to a Lead Teacher.
“When I was a Horizons student, I had the opportunity to learn from many amazing, dedicated teachers, who continue to inspire me now as a faculty member. Now, I get to pay it forward by creating an environment in which our students can thrive, take risks, and enjoy endless opportunities to be successful.”

BUILDING BRIGHT FUTURES
Horizons at NCCS offers tuition-free programming that empowers our students with opportunities for personal growth, equipping them to graduate from high school ready for college or career paths. This transformative experience significantly alters their life trajectories. Many of our students are the first in their families to pursue higher education, opening doors to new possibilities and bright futures.
of Horizons 12th-grade students graduated from high school 100% 95% of Horizons 12th-grade students were enrolled in college or other post-secondary programs in the fall
With your support, Horizons at NCCS empowers our students to overcome challenges, build resilience, and realize their dreams. Together, we are fostering a community where every student can thrive and succeed.
“When a child learns to swim, it builds selfconfidence that spills over to everything Horizons does.”
Lyn McNaught, Executive Director, 1977–2003
“My child’s favorite memory is her first summer learning how to swim at Horizons. She was so proud of herself and came home bragging to everyone in our family. I was so impressed, I decided to enroll in the evening adult swimming lessons Horizons offers.”
Tamara, Horizons caregiver
The McNaught Pool, dedicated to Horizons’ first Executive Director Lyn and her husband Michael McNaught, is enjoyed by students in kindergarten through 5th grade for instructional and recreational swim. Our students thrive as they embrace the challenge and joy of mastering new swimming skills. Many students of color lack access to this vital life-saving skill due to generational barriers and limited pool availability. Horizons at NCCS empowers students by providing them with essential swimming lessons, ensuring they gain both confidence and safety in the water.
