With a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves our community’s health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, at the New Canaan Y, 5,000 kids in our community each year are cultivating the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement.

Y. That’s because in 10,000 neighborhoods across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, positive change.

HEALTHY LIVING

In communities across the nation, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors The New Canaan Y has been listening to and responding to our community’s needs since 1954. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, preventing chronic disease and building a healtier community, or reaching across borders through our World Service Initiative, the New Canaan Y empowers members of our community to be healthy, confident, connected, and secure.

BASKETBALL CLINICS

Former U-Conn Starter Craig Austrie will be running a spring clinic on Sundays at the Y. At this clinic, your child will get the opportunity to play games, develop their basketball skills, as well as become a disciplined basketball player. When games are played, Craig and his staff will evaluate players, strengthening their strengths and addressing their weaknessess. The lessons are focused, fun, and challenging. The instruction is all positive. The instruction is tailored to age and skill level. This is about making each kid feel great about what they can do as individuals, not comparing each to the next. If your kids like basketball, this will make them love it. If they love basketball already this is a great opportunity to realize their full potential!

LACROSSE: INTRO TO BANTAMS (Boys, Grades K-1)

This class offers students the opportunity to be introduced to the game of lacrosse with a hardball. The students work stick skills, such as shooting, passing, cradling, ground ball pick-ups and catching. Participants are required to wear gloves and a helmet, and the class is non-contact.

LACROSSE: BANTAMS (Boys, Grades 2-3) Advanced first grade boys may also apply to this class. The class is structured around teaching boys the positions on the lacrosse field. Stick skills are reinforced, and dodging and defense techniques are emphasized. This class offers game play. Boys’ lacrosse equipment is required (helmet, shoulder and arm pads, gloves, and a stick).

ANGEL FISH (YSN) 11-week session. A small group class for children with special needs and his or her parent. This class will use therapeutic techniques to strengthen muscles, normalize muscle tone, and modulate the sensory system. Using the water’s properties of buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure, we will meet each child’s individual needs. This class is run by Ailene Tisser-Physical Therapist, along with other therapists and a YMCA instructor. The focus will be on parent education regarding therapeutic activities, basic swim skills, peer interaction, motor planning, and mostly FUN! Siblings cannot swim at this time. Siblings will be invited to swim on the last class at the instructor’s discretion. TLC SALAMANDER (YSN) This is a “bridging” class especially for children with special needs who are ready to be introduced to a regular swim lesson format. All children must be evaluated by the Aquatics Department prior to registering to determine if this is the appropriate class for them. The class ratio will be 1 instructor to 3 children. Registration will not be accepted without Director’s approval. BUDDY SWIM (YSN)

The New Canaan YMCA is proud to offer a class for children with special needs aged 7-12 years old led by an instructor. Staff will work on skill development under the direction of the swim instructor, while increasing each child’s self-confidence.

“NO SECOND CHANCE” New Canaan YMCA Aquatics

SAFETY FOR ALL

• Three children die each day from drowning. • For every child that drowns, another 4 receive emergency care for non-fatal injuries. • Non-fatal drowning can cause brain damage that results in long-term disabilities. • 1 in 4 drownings occur among children 14 years old and younger. The New Canaan YMCA Aquatic Department implemented a campaign called “NO SECOND CHANCE” with their Camp Waterfronts three summers ago to address the need of educating staff on drowning situations that occur in the summer months. Two years ago, we implemented it with our year-round staff to focus on safety for all who use our pools. We now conduct mandatory swim testing on all members who use our pool during Family Swim times. Information on procedures for this swim testing will be available on our website and posted around our facility. All those attending Family Swim will need to be tested before participating in Family Swim. Aquatic staff will be available to test members 15 years and younger during all Family Swim times.

“Our son was never interested in sports and his attitude toward trying new activities was consistently, ‘no thanks.’ As parents, we worried about his little involvement in after-school activities; not only was it an unhealthy situation physically, but mentally as well. Ever since he joined the New Canaan YMCA Caimans swim team, he has shown an unbelievable sense of enthusiasm and commitment, which has trickled into other parts of his life. His self-esteem is at an all-time high, he earns better grades at school and he has become physically fit. We feel extremely blessed to have found the New Canaan YMCA Caimans and we are ever so grateful for the positive impact they have on our son.” - New Canaan YMCA Caimans Parent

Synchronized Swimming

SYNCHRO FISH (12-week program)

A once-a-week class for girls ages 6-10, this class is great for beginners! Swimmers learn basic synchro skills in a safe, noncompetitive environment. Girls will enjoy playing games, listening to our underwater sound system, and learning synchro positions upside down in the deep end! At the end of the session, they will combine the skills they learned into a routine and perform for their families! Practice Commitment: One day per week. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim length of pool using freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke and be comfortable going underwater. Minnow proficiency or higher. No synchro experience necessary.

“My husband and I feel so grateful that our daughter has become a part of the synchronized swimming team. Respect, independence, team work, and consideration of others have been shared with my daughter. The building of positive self-esteem that is encouraged to each of these girls is just priceless. The coaches are the MOST caring, thoughtful, driven, kind women that I have ever met. Their tireless and complete effort to this team truly amazes me. I am a proud mother of a 13-year old Aquiana. - Synchronized Swimming Parent

SYNCHRO STRIPES (12-week program)

This class is offered to three age groups: 10 and under, 11-12, and 13 and up. Beginners are welcome, but girls with some synchro experience will also be challenged. Synchro Stripes builds upon the skills taught in the Synchro Fish class, and girls will learn compulsory figures and a full-length routine. They work on developing the flexibility, balance, and endurance needed for more advanced synchronized swimming. Some girls in Stripes move up to the Stars Team mid-year and attend a few meets, while others choose to stay in the Stripes class and perform at Night of Champions, our year-end show. Practice Commitment: 2 days per week, with optional third day. Prerequisites: For strong swimmers: Flying Fish/Shark or equivalent. Synchro Fish skills assessment, summer club experience preferred, but not required.

SYNCHRO STARS TEAM (September-June)

An entry-level team that introduces the competitive synchronized swimming program to swimmers who have advanced through the Fish and Stripes classes. This team will focus on skill development for intermediate competition, including compulsory figures, extension, flexibility, and routine elements. Routines will be offered in solo, duet, trio, and team. Competitive opportunities are available for those who qualify. Practice Commitment: Three days per week.

Recreational Gymnastics And Diving

THE NEW CANAAN YMCA OFFERS PROGRAMS AT THE FOLLOWING LEVELS:

SPARKLERS (Kindergarten & 1st Grade) This beginner class is a starting point for those ready for a structured format in our recreational gymnastics program. Our instructors will incorporate a fun, caring environment with a learning atmosphere, to help children develop basic gymnastic moves that will help them improve involvement in all sports, especially gymnastics. Our goal is to allow children to have fun while having a gymnastics experience. We will challenge athletes individually. Skills include basic tumbling, and we encourage the YMCA’s four core values.

JUMPERS (Ages 7-9) A beginner group for children who want to expand their gymnastic experience, this is a structured class that includes emphasis on flexibility, conditioning strength, apparatus station development, and age-appropriate gymnastic activities. We will encourage participation among everyone, to help improve their gymnastic skills and increase each child’s enjoyment of the sport. Basic skills such as cartwheels, handstands, bridges, somersaults, and some beam and bar moves are the focus of this program.

FLIPPERS (Ages 9-12) This beginner-to-intermediate program is similarly structured to the Jumpers class. This class will emphasize skills at a more advanced level and is designed for those looking to reach the developmental level. Skills such as cartwheels, handstands, and somersaults should be mastered. We will improve upon these skills, as well as focus on more advanced skills, such as front and back walkovers, roundoffs, front and back-hip circles, and pirouettes. COACHING STAFF: Krista Carmel

Allison Coleman Wes Mattice

POWER TUMBLING (Ages 10-18)

For cheerleaders, gymnasts, and tumblers! Power tumbling is for gymnasts, cheerleaders, and power tumblers of all levels. Power tumbling is becoming a popular form of gymnastics and differs from basic gymnastics in that it focuses on doing flips and twists in the air. It incorporates some traditional gymnastics moves and elevates them into a series of jumping and spinning movements in the air that take skill and practice to complete. If you want to go to several steps beyond somersaults and cartwheels, try this class!

DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM

(Coaches Invitation Only) The most advanced level of our recreational gymnastics program, this program is for gymnasts who have previously been through structured gymnastics classes and are now ready for more intensive training. Gymnasts will train with others of the same ability and skill level who are looking to showcase their skills in a low-key environment. Skill sets include all apparatus. We will enhance upon front and back handsprings, arials, round-off sequences and more. We will work pirouettes and cartwheels, as well as back walkovers. Bars will include cast squat-ons, cast to horizontal, kips, and dismounts. Other basic and competitive skills on various apparatus will be the main focus of this class.

ZUMBATOMIC

(Preschool & School-Age) This Latin-inspired dance fitness program is an exciting way for kids to exercise while having fun learning to dance! The kids begin each class with a warm-up of freestyle dance, hula hooping, etc, and then move from song to song treating each routine like a different mood or personality. They will also as a group choreograph their own dance to a song or two. The class ends with a cool down and stretch. It is 45 fun-filled minutes of nonstop movement!

FUN FITNESS

(Grades 3 & 4) This class involves a variety of physical activities geared toward keeping your child moving; introducing the fitness concepts of strength, endurance, and flexibility; and most important having fun!! Relays, rope skipping, active games, agility drills, and stretching, along with some strength work using bands and dumbbells, are all part of this class.

PRE-TEEN FITNESS

(Grades 5 & 6) These are the ideal years to introduce a strength training program. Pre-teens will learn a strength training program using dumbbells and will also improve their endurance level through a variety of movement activities in a game atmosphere using jump ropes, balls, hoops, cones, steps, and bands.

GIRLS ON THE RUN

(Grades 3 - 5) After a successful pilot season, Girls On The Run is back! The program is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls combining training for a 3.1 mile run event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. This program is not a running program but a program that encourages positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. The objective of Girls On The Run is to educate and empower girls at an early age in order to prevent the display of at-risk activities in the future. For more information contact David Cedela at ext. 141.

Y-GUIDE/Y-PRINCESS

(A Father/Son and Father/Daughter program: Kindergarten - 3rd Grade) The Y-Guide/Princess program instills closer family relationships between parents and children. Our program fosters togetherness... doing fun things, such as crafts, hiking, outings, stories, games, and hobbies. In the process, participants get to know and understand each other better. Parents become more aware of their children’s needs, and at the same time children are provided with the important adult role models so necessary to their development. Youngsters savor the joys of achieving in joint projects, and parents, the fun and value of companionship with their children on a one-to-one basis. The parents and youngsters join and participate together in small groups called tribes.

2011-2012 NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION:

“ I have to thank you all for helping my daughter and her fellow Y-Princesses have a memorable three years. It was with great reflection that I looked at them all playing on the grounds of our “estate” Saturday night. No electronics. No aids. Nothing but imagination and boundless energy. It is still possible to manufacture fun from nothing other than great weather and wide open spaces. I know that my daughter will always have a warm place in her heart for her great friends, a succession of wonderful leadership and caring fathers, who for awhile, were able to step away and remember what it was like to once again be young and wondrous.” - Y-Princess Father

Let us bring our bag of tricks to you with PA on Wheels!

Groups who take part in our Project Adventure on Wheels program will be required to figure out problems, overcome obstacles, and work as a team to complete a task within certain boundaries and sometimes within a time limit, much like “real life.” What your group will get out of it is a boosted morale toward stressful situations and seemingly impossible odds. Once they know they can overcome an obstacle such as “Stepping Stones” or encourage their fellow group members to experience the “Wild Woosey,” they know they can overcome tasks at work, in school, or life. We work with organizations/businesses, school groups, alternative classrooms, out-of-school programs, religious youth groups, sports teams, camps, and clubs throughout the year either at the YMCA or your facility.

Our schedules are flexible; please contact us about availability.

Contact Davie Cedela, (203) 966-4528, ext. 141, for more information regarding program and fees and to schedule your group’s activity.

The YMCA/Outback Partnership working together for our community’s youth

Our shared vision is for the Outback to be a hub for youth activities, including a wider array of after-school programs for middle and high school students —as well as activities and special events to

include field trips, community service programs, teen mentoring, homework help, or simply stress-free down time. INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES

A global perspective, responsibility, and response are tied directly to our collective effort to increase the impact of the YMCA mission across the country and around the world. The ability to integrate global dimensions into daily programming and initiatives is a critical component to effectively engage an increasingly diverse population in the United States and maintain our connection to the global YMCA movement.

KIBERA, AFRICA FACING THE FUTURE PARTNERSHIP

In 2007, the New Canaan YMCA embarked on an exciting partnership with Facing the Future, a child development center serving more than 100 children in the Kenyan slum of Kibera. In Kibera, nearly one million people live in an area the size of Central Park without clean water, electricity, plumbing, trash removal, adequate food, and medical facilities. 70% of the population is under the age of 14. The New Canaan YMCA is proud to be sponsoring the feeding program at Facing the Future. This is a great opportunity for members of our community to change the life of a child a world away—and is a chance to talk as a family about helping others in need and doing good “just because.” Just $200 will help feed one child for one year at Facing the Future. For more information, contact Carol Antrum at (203) 966-4528, ext. 140, or cantrum@newcanaanymca.org.

LEAP LEADERS EDUCATED AS PHILANTHROPISTS

3 groups of ordinary, diverse individuals connected together in an unlikely, unique local and global partnership to affect change throughout the world.

A partnership program between the New Canaan YMCA, The Boys and Girls Club of Stamford, and The Drug Fighters School in Kenya, Kiberia, and Africa. For more information, contact Lauren Calahan at lcalahan@optonline.net.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

giving back and providing support to our neighbors

EVERYBODY BELONGS HERE

The New Canaan YMCA’s 2011 Annual Support Campaign

Turn your gift into... THEIR POTENTIAL: We believe all kids deserve the

chance to discover who they are and what they want to achieve. At our Y, more than 5,000 youth are cultivating the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and educational achievement. Y activities give our kids the opportunity to become confident kids today and happier, healthier grown-ups tomorrow.

THEIR HEALTH: Improving our community’s health and well-being is one of our priorities, and the Y offers resources and guidance to help people of all ages and abilities improve their physical activity, health, and wellness. We bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. THEIR FUTURE: At the Y, strengthening the community is

our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. Every day, we work side by side with our members, volunteers, and other community organizations to ensure that everyone – regardless of age, income, background or ability – has the opportunity to learn, grow, thrive, and connect.

THIS YEAR’S GOAL:

$300,000 We count on the generosity of our members and the community to make the Y available to people of all ages and abilities through financial assistance and programs for those with special needs. When you give to the Y, your gift has a meaningful impact right here in your neighborhood.
